Chemotherapy side effects
Understanding Chemotherapy and Its Side Effects
Chemotherapy is a powerful cancer treatment designed to kill or slow the growth of cancer cells. While it is highly effective at targeting rapidly dividing cells, Chemotherapy side effects also affects healthy cells, leading to a variety of side effects. These side effects can range from mild to severe, making it essential for patients and their families to understand what to expect and how to manage them effectively.
How Chemotherapy Works and Its Impact on the Body
Chemotherapy works by targeting cells that divide rapidly, a characteristic of cancer cells. Unfortunately, some healthy cells in the body also divide quickly, such as those in the hair follicles, digestive system, and bone marrow. As chemotherapy attacks these cells, it can lead to a range of side effects that impact various parts of the body. Understanding these effects helps patients prepare for treatment and manage any challenges that may arise.
For anyone about to undergo chemotherapy or supporting a loved one through it, knowing what to expect can ease the anxiety and make the process more manageable. Being informed can provide a sense of control and help ensure that patients receive the necessary support.
Common Side Effects of Chemotherapy: What to Expect During Your First Treatment
The first chemotherapy session can be a daunting experience, as patients often do not know how their bodies will respond. While each individual reacts differently, there are some common side effects that people may experience during their first chemo treatment:
Nausea and Vomiting: This is one of the most common side effects of chemotherapy. Fortunately, medications called antiemetics are often provided to help manage these symptoms.
Fatigue: Chemotherapy can make patients feel more tired than usual, even after a good night's sleep. Rest is essential during treatment, and it’s important to listen to your body.
Hair Loss: While not everyone undergoing chemotherapy loses their hair, it is a well-known potential side effect. Hair loss typically occurs a few weeks after treatment begins.
Appetite Loss: Some people experience changes in their sense of taste, and others might feel less hungry. Eating small, frequent meals can help maintain energy levels.
It's crucial to keep the healthcare team informed of any side effects experienced during and after treatment. They can offer advice, medications, and support to help manage symptoms and improve comfort.

What Are the Worst Side Effects of Chemotherapy?
One common question from patients and their families is: “What are the worst side effects of chemotherapy?” While every person’s experience is unique, certain side effects are known to be particularly challenging:
Increased Risk of Infection: Chemotherapy can weaken the immune system by reducing the number of white blood cells, which help fight infections. This makes patients more vulnerable to illness. To minimize infection risk, it’s important to practice good hygiene, avoid large crowds, and stay away from people who are sick.
Neuropathy: Chemotherapy can cause peripheral neuropathy, which leads to tingling, numbness, or pain in the hands and feet. This side effect can be uncomfortable and may affect daily activities.
Mouth Sores: Some chemotherapy drugs can cause painful sores in the mouth, making it difficult to eat or speak. Keeping the mouth clean and staying hydrated can help manage this side effect.
Cognitive Changes: Commonly referred to as “chemo brain,” some patients may experience memory problems, confusion, or difficulty concentrating. These cognitive changes can be temporary or long-lasting, but strategies like staying organized and using memory aids can help.
While these side effects can be daunting, many can be managed with proper care and support from a healthcare team. Patients should always discuss any symptoms with their doctor to ensure that the appropriate measures are taken to mitigate discomfort.
Long-Term Side Effects of Chemotherapy
For some patients, the side effects of chemotherapy don’t stop when the treatment ends. Long-term effects can develop, and it’s important to be aware of these potential risks:
Heart and Lung Damage: Certain chemotherapy drugs may cause long-term damage to the heart or lungs. Regular check-ups with a healthcare provider are essential to monitor for any signs of damage after treatment.
Fertility Issues: Chemotherapy can affect fertility, particularly in younger patients. For those concerned about fertility, it’s important to discuss options like sperm banking or egg freezing before starting treatment.
Bone Density Loss: Chemotherapy can impact bone health, leading to conditions like osteoporosis. Patients can take preventive actions by staying physically active and ensuring they get enough calcium and vitamin D in their diets.
Risk of Secondary Cancers: Although rare, chemotherapy can increase the risk of developing a different type of cancer years after treatment. Regular monitoring and follow-up appointments with an oncologist are crucial for early detection.
Understanding these long-term side effects allows patients to take proactive steps to maintain their health and wellbeing after chemotherapy ends.
When Is Chemotherapy Used?
Chemotherapy can be used at various stages of cancer, depending on the type of cancer and its progression. It is a versatile treatment option and is commonly used in the following scenarios:
As the Primary Treatment: For certain types of cancer, particularly blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma, chemotherapy may be the main treatment.
After Surgery (Adjuvant Therapy): Chemotherapy is often used after surgery to eliminate any remaining cancer cells and reduce the risk of the cancer returning.
Before Surgery (Neoadjuvant Therapy): In some cases, chemotherapy is used to shrink a tumor before surgery, making it easier to remove.
For Advanced or Metastatic Cancer: In later stages of cancer, chemotherapy can help control the spread of the disease and improve quality of life. While it may not cure the cancer, it can help manage symptoms and slow its progression.
Patients should have a detailed discussion with their oncologist about the goals of chemotherapy in their treatment plan. Understanding the purpose of the treatment can help patients feel more informed and empowered.
Tips for Managing Chemotherapy Side Effects
While chemotherapy side effects can be challenging, there are several strategies to help manage them effectively. Here are some tips that can make a significant difference:
Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps flush chemotherapy drugs from the system and can reduce side effects like nausea and fatigue. Hydration is key to maintaining energy levels and overall health during treatment.
Eat Small, Frequent Meals: Many patients experience nausea or a loss of appetite during chemotherapy. Eating smaller, more frequent meals can help maintain energy levels and prevent nausea from becoming overwhelming.
Rest When Needed: Fatigue is a common side effect of chemotherapy, and it’s important to listen to your body. Take breaks, rest when needed, and don’t be afraid to ask for help with daily tasks.
Seek Emotional Support: The mental and emotional toll of chemotherapy can be significant. Joining a support group, talking to a counselor, or seeking emotional support from family and friends can provide comfort and help patients cope with the challenges of treatment.
Communicate with Your Healthcare Team: Always keep your doctor informed of any side effects you experience, no matter how minor they may seem. They can offer guidance, medications, and strategies to help manage symptoms and improve your comfort during treatment.
Conclusion
Chemotherapy is a powerful tool in the fight against cancer, but it comes with its own set of challenges. The side effects of chemotherapy, both short-term and long-term, can vary from person to person, but being informed and proactive can make a significant difference in how these side effects are managed.
From understanding what to expect during your first chemotherapy session to being aware of the potential long-term effects, it’s crucial to stay informed and work closely with your healthcare team. With the right support, patients can navigate the challenges of chemotherapy and focus on their journey toward recovery.     For more details visit https://bestoncologytreatment.com/onco-target/oncologic-genetics-cancer/

Understanding Low-Dose Chemotherapy: A New Approach to Cancer Treatment
What is Low-Dose Chemotherapy?
Low-dose chemotherapy, also known as metronomic chemotherapy, involves administering chemotherapy drugs in lower, more frequent doses compared to traditional high-dose regimens. Instead of delivering a large amount of the drug in one session, the low-dose approach uses smaller amounts over a continuous period. This method aims to target cancer cells more effectively while minimizing damage to healthy cells and reducing the overall toxicity associated with chemotherapy.
This approach is often used for patients who may not tolerate high-dose chemotherapy well, such as the elderly or those with compromised immune systems. Low Dose Chemo It’s also being explored as part of combination therapies with other cancer treatments like immunotherapy or radiation.
How Does Low-Dose Chemotherapy Work?
Traditional high-dose chemotherapy works by attacking rapidly dividing cells, but it often affects both cancerous and healthy cells, leading to severe side effects. Low-dose chemotherapy, on the other hand, focuses on several mechanisms to fight cancer in a less aggressive way:
Anti-Angiogenesis: Low-dose chemotherapy helps prevent the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) that tumors need to grow. By inhibiting this process, low-dose chemo can starve the tumor, slowing its growth or causing it to shrink.
Immune System Support: The smaller, more frequent doses of chemotherapy can help the body’s immune system recognize and attack cancer cells without overwhelming it, as is often the case with high-dose regimens.
Continuous Pressure on Tumor Cells: By maintaining a constant, low-level attack on cancer cells, low-dose chemotherapy may help prevent tumors from becoming resistant to treatment, which is a common challenge with traditional chemotherapy.
Benefits of Low-Dose Chemotherapy
Low-dose chemotherapy offers several advantages over traditional high-dose regimens, making it an attractive option for many patients:
Fewer Side Effects: Because low-dose chemotherapy is less toxic to healthy cells, patients generally experience fewer side effects such as nausea, hair loss, and fatigue. This allows for a better quality of life during treatment.
Longer Treatment Duration: The continuous nature of low-dose chemotherapy means patients can often stay on treatment for longer periods, offering ongoing control of cancer growth without the need for frequent hospital visits or interruptions due to severe side effects.
Enhanced Effectiveness in Certain Cancers: Research has shown that low-dose chemotherapy can be particularly effective for certain types of cancers, including breast, prostate, and ovarian cancers. It is also being explored for use in advanced cancers where high-dose chemotherapy may no longer be an option.
Synergistic with Other Therapies: Low-dose chemotherapy is often used in combination with other treatments, such as immunotherapy, targeted therapy, or radiation, to improve outcomes. holistic treatment center This multi-pronged approach can enhance the overall effectiveness of cancer treatment.
Who Can Benefit from Low-Dose Chemotherapy?
While low-dose chemotherapy is not appropriate for all types of cancer, it has shown promise for patients with certain solid tumors, those who cannot tolerate traditional chemotherapy, or individuals with advanced-stage cancer where treatment options are limited. It is also being investigated for use in maintenance therapy, helping keep cancer in check after initial high-dose treatment.

Note
It is no different than a cisgender man’s risk of heart attack.
In the spirit of this anon, should we wish all cis men the same? Should we wish cis women a happy increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer? Or perhaps a very happy increased risk of stomach ulcers and esophageal tearing to everyone who takes ibuprofen and aspirin? Perhaps I should call up the chemo center and wish the patients there a very happy increased risk of hair loss, anemia and memory loss?
Should I? Or would this all be pretty mean? Arguably cruel in many cases? Because that’s what this attitude boils down to. Being mean. Being a bully.
Medications and treatments all have potential side effects. These side effects are communicated to the patient for transparency on what to expect, what to be wary of, and what the doctor or specialist or you should/will be keeping an eye out for during said treatment.
To minimize a treatment, from the life saving to the tummy ache solving, down to its potential side effects as reasons no one should undergo said treatments implies that no drugs, no meds, no treatments, no risks, nothing should be taken or given or used. No OTC painkillers. No chemotherapy. No cosmetic surgeries, no wheelchairs or canes, crutches, reconstructive surgeries, birth control, cold medicine, acupuncture, chiropractics, hell wearing contact lenses or glasses— Nothing.
All of these things have potential side effects. Yet we do all of these things. Many of them are apart of our everyday lives. My eyeglasses give me the increased risk of experiencing vertigo whenever my prescription changes, and I still update it yearly. My cane increases my risk of carpal tunnel, and I sure as shit have it now. My testosterone increases my risk of heart attack. Yet I still wear my glasses and adjust to the rx. Takes time but it’s worth it to see clearly. I still use my cane because it helps me walk, and I get therapy for my carpal tunnel. It hurts but it’s worth it. I take testosterone, and years later it paired with therapy have completely eliminated my gender dysphoria. I am happy, healthy, have a thriving career in medicine, a family and home. I see an endocrinologist and my PCP regularly and guess what? I have a healthy, normal heart and healthy levels of testosterone. As every human that ages, I will have more doctors monitor my heart, my head, my body. Such is a fact of life, and what a wonder it is we’ve come so far to have such amazing medical advancements to be able to monitor such things.
So. We know anon only wants to be mean. That is the spirit of their message and all messages like it. If that is how you want to live your life, petty and mean spirited, by all means. What comes around goes around. In all my 30 years of living I can tell you more joy has come into my life through kindness and compassion than it ever has being a bully.
We already know gender affirming care saves lives and improves the mental health overall well-being of those who undergo it and need it. We know that trans people have been around longer than mentions of Christ, that people like me have existed world wide and throughout every period in human history. From the Two Spirit of North American tribes, to the Muxe of South America. To the Hijra of South Asia. To the tribes in Africa like the Igbo, the Meru and Kikuyu and more with trans identities and roles. We know that the Nazis and other colonizers did a very good job in burying much of our history, burning what research there was, and killing us. Yet we persevered.
We have always been here. We will remain and persevere against all colonizers, religious persecution and those who would silence us, harass us, and kill us. We are not going away, and we deserve the same peace in our lives and bodies as any other human being does. No one should suffer for who or what they are be they man, woman, trans, cis, gay, straight, POC, disabled, neurodivergent, and so on. In knowledge there is power. In community there is strength. In compassion there is peace.
enjoy your "hand worms" from taking testosterone, and also your increased risk of heart attack :D
I will, thanks! 🥰

It was deemed perfect
T.W: mentions of blood, cuss words, cancer, cancer treatment options, needles, mentions of hair loss, mentions of bone marrow aspiration, and mentions of dying. Sorry if I missed any!!
Word Count: 1429
A/N: not my best work, sorry.
Setting: Present Day
Why? If this happened during the actual time of Season 4, then Y/N is fucked. Since there is a good chance that the uniformed chemotherapy would not have most likely been in Hawkins, Indiana, then Y/N's fate would be death.
______________________________________________________________
It all started when your best friend Steve begged you to go donate blood with him. Said it would be so amazing to be able to help those in need. Of course, they inspected the blood samples to ensure there were no imperfections. Steve’s was immediately deemed perfect.
The nurse requested another sample from you; it seemed odd, but who knows, right? Well, by the look the nurse made after examining the second sample caused your stomach to drop. She excused herself and called your parents to inform them that they needed to immediately get you to the hospital.
You were in the dark, but a gut feeling told you it was not good. Steve had to pick up the kids from the movie theater, so he asked you to text him updates and left.
Your parents arrived shortly after the nurse called them, and they tried to put on a brave face, but you saw right through it. The car and the ride to the hospital was nerve-racking, to say the least. You try to not think of the worst-case scenarios, but how could you not think of anything else while driving to a hospital after a worrying blood sample?
Upon arriving and entering the hospital, a doctor was already waiting for you. They escorted you to a room that was already prepped for you. You got settled and got some more lab work done; the feeling of being poked and prodded was already overwhelming, and you suspected there was more to come.
After what felt like an eternity, the test results came back, and it was what everyone feared. Cancer, Leukemia, to be more exact. They said they caught it early, so they’re hoping that the treatment will be very minimal. But you don’t care, you don’t care because you have fucking cancer. It doesn’t matter how severe the treatment is. You have cancer. You are a cancer patient; you never thought you would hold a title you wish you could give back.
At this point, so many things were going through your mind, none of which had to do with texting Steve back. Not that you didn’t want to, but your world was flipped upside down, and communicating via text was the last thing you thought of.
‘Would you still be able to go to school? Would you lose your hair? How sick does chemo make you, or do you even need chemo? Is there any other kind of treatment? You heard of radiation; it was done for more severe cases, right? So undergoing radiation wasn’t something you had to stress over, right?’ You think, panic rising in your chest.
You knew that the doctor was still talking, but none of what he was saying was registering in your mind. I mean, did he expect anything else? He just gave you the worst news of your life; adjusting will take a bit. You wish you could go back to yesterday when you were annoying Steve and Robin at Family Video, giving them shit for the horrible movie recommendations. What you wouldn’t give to go back to that supposedly harmless flirting that Steve never caught onto.
You wanted to scream. You wanted to cry, but it felt like you couldn’t. You don’t even notice that the doctor has left the room until your father clears his throat. Your parents told you that they have discharged you until they can schedule a bone marrow aspiration. The drive home seems to fly by. You don’t even recall how you got upstairs and into your bedroom. You changed into the comfiest PJs and crawled into bed. You forgot all about Steve; your mind was completely blank as you stared at the ceiling while tears silently fell down your face.
Meanwhile, your mother called Mrs. Wheeler since they are best friends and told her the news. Mrs. Wheeler then told both Nancy and Mike. The latter was in the car with Steve when he received the news via text message. Mike gasped and covered his mouth in shock. He had to reread the text multiple times for it to register. You grew up with the Wheelers since you were Nancy's age, so Mike viewed you as another older sister. It honestly felt like someone sucker punched him.
He was the last kid in the car and instructed Steve to drive to your house. Steve looked over and could tell just by looking at  Mike’s face that it wasn’t good.
“What’s up?” Steve inquires, his eyebrows furrowing with concern.
“Just drive, Steve. You don’t want to hear it from me,” Mike says, and the remaining car ride was silent. As the two pulled up to your house, two extra cars were parked in front, the vehicle Mrs. Wheeler drives and Nancy’s.
Steve had not even put the car in park before Mike ran to the front porch, and Steve joined on the front porch upon turning his car off and locking it. Robin opened the door, and Steve saw tears streaming down her face. She steps aside and lets the two in, closing the door behind them.
"What is going on?" Steve whispers, already tearing up upon seeing Robin, Nancy, your parents, and Mrs. Wheeler crying. Nancy stood up and pulled Mike into a tight hug which caused Mike to also break down.
"I think you, you might want to sit down." Your mom says, and Steve does.
"Okay?" He asks upon sitting down.
"After the concerning blood samples from the blood drive, we went to the hospital and discovered any parent's worst nightmare. Y/n, she, she has been diagnosed with- with cancer. Leukemia to be--" Your mother explains, but Steve could not bear it anymore. He wanted, no, needed to see you. He bolted up the steps, two at a time, and sprinted to your room. He threw the door open to see you in bed. Lying on your back and staring up at the ceiling while silently crying. Steve quietly took his shoes off and slowly approached your bed. He sat on the edge of the bed, looking down at you, which caused you to meet his stare.
“Thank you,” you whisper.
“For?”
“Had you not forced me to go to the blood bank, then who knows how long I would have gone without knowing. It could have ended much worse. I, I could have died. So, thank you.” You ramble through a shaky voice and silent tears.
You observe as Steve lays back on your bed and looks at you with open arms, you immediately crawl onto his chest, and he wraps with arms around you. You feel so safe. So protected. So at peace. So at home.
"Hey, uh, Y/n?" Steve pips up after some minutes of silence pass.
"Hmm?" You murmur into his chest, inhaling his intoxicating cologne.
"Well, I have been meaning to tell you something. I was just too nervous since I would never want to jeopardize our friendship. However, this afternoon has given me the push that I need to say this." At this point, you have raised your head from his chest and looked into his eyes. You are hoping he says he feels more intense emotions than a friend should feel towards you, but you don't want to get your hopes up.
"I, Steve Harrington, love you, Y/N Y/L/N. I have for a long time. I just value our friendship too much. I apologize if this changes how you look at me, but I love you and not in a platonic way." He says, and you are stunned. You cover your mouth with your hand as your jaw drops.
"You love me?" You ask incredulously. This is so not happening.
"I do,"
"Oh my God, I am so relieved. I love you too. And I hope that this changes everything, including how I view you."
"And how is that?" Steve presses.
"As Boyfriend and Girlfriend, I mean there is no time like the present. Right?"
"Indeed, in that case, would you be my girlfriend?"
"A million times, yes." You say as your lightly peck Steve's lips. You lay your head back on his chest, and he can feel you smile on his chest as you doze off. However, he can't. He is too terrified that you won't wake up, so he stays awake and monitors your breathing.
"I can't wait to take you on a date, girlfriend." He whispers even though he knows you are already asleep. He presses a kiss to your forehead and relaxes with you in his arms.
Edit: Title changed, realized there was a typo

Not "Just Hair": Exposure, Autonomy, and Vulnerability
Hello friends, In the past couple days it's become clear to me that I've hit a certain (unwelcome) cancer milestone: I'm losing my hair. Right now it's just shedding like crazy. (If I had a contest with my cat--who's losing his hair for summer right now--I would still totally win!) I don't know why, given that it's a primary side effect of this drug (90% of people lose their hair), but I'm somehow still surprised. I think I felt that, having been in in an improbable, tiny percentage on most other things related to this disease I might at least have the chance to be in the special 10% on something positive. Not so! Perhaps I'm also surprised, though, because my other symptoms haven't been very bad...so much so that (as I wrote about before) I'm in a constant anxiety spiral about whether something physical is a sign or symptom and, if so, whether it means the treatment is working or not. Hair falling out is unquestionably a sign that the chemo is doing something--that it's doing precisely what it's supposed to, in fact, and targeting fast-growing cells of all types. So, yes, in that sense I want to lose my hair. Right when I was first diagnosed I wanted them to hit me with everything all at once: chemo, surgery, radiation - I wanted to be assaulted by every weapon the medical profession had to wield against cancer and I didn't care what I looked like or how I suffered. I wanted to enter treatment as a warrior and I wanted to look like one, shaved head and all. Somehow, though, I lost that attitude. It's not that I don't want to fight, but that the stance of being a warrior all the time is exhausting. There's a lot that's less than ideal about using the language of conflict and battle (and implicitly of winning and losing) to talk about something that you don't have any control over. If this chemo agent doesn't kill enough cells (as my pessimistic side believes it won't) it won't be because I did or didn't do anything. If it does work, it's only my victory in the sense that it's good luck for me. My body isn't the warrior so much as a field on which battles are waged on a cellular level. And my mind has nothing to do with the success--or not--of these conflicts. Fundamentally, I have no control. And that's the hardest thing for me about losing my hair.  [More below including Buffy gifs!!]
The loss of bodily autonomy involved in having cancer is huge. Not only does it feel like it's something personal, since it's your own cells (sometimes directed by your own DNA) that have betrayed you, but it's also something you can't fix; you can't do anything to change the outcome of your treatment. You can change the treatment itself (different chemo agents, additional drugs, supplementary radiation), but you can't train for it the way you train for a marathon, where your own commitment to training can pretty much guarantee you steady progress and a positive result. You can supplement your own treatment with things (vitamins, injections, crystals, chocolate) that you believe may help. You can train yourself in healthy ways to respond emotionally. (I was already in therapy but everyone involved with cancer treatment should be.) You can go to the gym and keep your body "otherwise healthy"--a phrase that my doctors said to and about me repeatedly during the diagnosis phase and that I never stopped finding funny...being perfectly healthy EXCEPT for Stage 4 cancer is something of a cosmic joke. (I know that they meant that, unlike many of their patients, I could endure the treatments very well and with minimal complications. That IS a good thing. But still...) You cannot train for cancer treatment. It's a battle, but one you must enter alone, untrained, and unarmed. Fundamentally, you have only yourself. And that must be enough. (I don't mean to dismiss the wonderful community of friends and family here; you all give me the strength to fight this fight. You just can't go with me.) There's an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a show which I love and which has meant a lot to me at different times in my life, where Buffy must fight her vampire ex-boyfriend Angel (who SPOILERS used to be a good guy because he was cursed with a soul but he lost it because he experienced true happiness with her) who has been systematically finding the best ways to hurt her, psychologically, before killing her. In this final battle, he backs her against a wall, sword pointed at her and says, "So that's everything. No weapons. No friends. No hope. Take all that away and what's left?" to which she replies, while grabbing his sword midair with her bare hands, "Me.":

If you want it, here's a clip on YouTube (this exchange is about a minute in). That moment has been my inspiration from the first moment of diagnosis. I had already used it to get through my divorce when I felt I had lost everything. I hadn't, though, because I was still me, with a core resilience and self-confidence and the righteous strength that enabled me to keep going, to thrive. It is grossly unfair that, less than a year later, I need to draw on that same energy again, but that is how battles work. We survive to fight another day. No weapons. No friends. No hope. Take all that away and what's left? Me. I know I've just employed the rhetoric of battle immediately after saying it's not ideal. It's not. I'm a peacetime creature, really, as are most of us. But I won't back down from a fight or sidestep necessary conflict either. And being a warrior is not the same as being embroiled in constant battle. Even Achilles put down his shield and wept in Priam's tent. In fact, all this content is on another blog whose title is "Pitiless Achilles Wept." You can read here about why I called it that, but here's the most important part that I wrote about the scene where Achilles and Priam cry together:
"They speak the universal language of human beings here: grief. They weep as fathers and sons and lovers because that’s honestly the only constant in our small human lives. So here I am, recording my grief, with the hope that at least, by being together, we can get through the evil I have to endure. I actually thought that the blog title was a quotation–and a beautiful line of poetry–but nowhere can I find a translation that reads, 'Pitiless Achilles wept.' But I still cannot think of a line that feels more appropriate to record the thoughts of someone who has to be both a warrior (brave, fierce, pitiless) and a frightened, vulnerable person."
Tonight I am that frightened and vulnerable person, furious that (without my permission) my body is shedding the hair that I have always loved and scared at how it will change my experience of being in the world. When I got my hair cut two weeks ago it showed no signs of giving up the ghost. My stylist tugged on it and pronounced that "you have really strong hair!" and I allowed myself to think that, somehow, that would protect me. Ah yes, I thought, my hair is strong like all the rest of me; it will endure.
Losing it therefore feels symbolic on a number of levels. I know that it doesn't make me weak, but it does make me vulnerable. How can I be so exposed, without any hair to duck under when I feel anxious? How will I get through the day without being able to run my hands through my hair (a nervous tic that is a self-soothing gesture...and currently hastening my hair loss)? How will I cope with being no longer regarded as immediately aesthetically pleasing (from my privileged position as someone who ticks many of the stereotypical boxes for attractiveness) by people who don't know me? (I did not realize how much I relied on this to navigate the world but it has certainly been made visible to me now. Perhaps this warrants another post later.)
Losing my hair is a good sign. We all want chemo to be as effective as possible so the more fast-growing cells we see being targeted the better. But as it marks me, visibly, as "sick" it robs me of the opportunity to choose whether to tell people or not--yet another loss of autonomy. I do have a wig that looks as much as possible like my regular hair. (I don't love everything about it but unless you have one custom-made you're not likely to find anything that looks precisely like you do.) This should enable me to pass as healthy, barring other obvious symptoms. But I imagine I might be the kind of person who would rather go bald (or at least with a 1930s Norma Desmond head wrap) as a way of owning my illness, taking back some of what it has stolen. I might rather this say, "Yes, this illness is a part of me now--even if it's not pretty. That's what a warrior looks like." No weapons. No friends. No...hair. Take all that away and what's left?

3 Days Left!
Wow! Only 3 more radiation treatments and Lil William will be finished with this round. I'm beyond proud of our brave son enduring the radiation and chemo treatments. He is such an inspiration to me.
During our weeks together in Houston, we have explored different parts of this huge city: Uptown, Midtown, Downtown, Rice Village, Post Oak, The Heights, Montrose, Upper Kirby and much more. You could consider our family foodies, so we have eaten at different types of restaurants: Local Foods, JINYA ramen noodle bar, almost all of the Papa's (Papa's Steak House is still on the list to try), Sweet Cup Gelato & Sorbet, Fluff Bake Bar (best S'mores ever!), Caffe' Di Firenze (Italian roasted coffee and sweets), Common Bond bakery and cafe, Retrospect coffee (best crepes and coffee), and many more. We have also filled our time, between treatments and doctor appointments, watching clips from The Simpsons (I love seeing my son laugh 😊) and Frasier episodes, which I join in on the laughter. Games, like Clue and Battleship, have helped pass the time away. Friends and family visiting us, as well as traveling home to New Braunfels for a few weekends, have also made the time pass.
Even though Lil William has had minimal side effects, including fatigue, hair loss and nausea, he continues to have a smile on his face and brings sunshine wherever he goes.
What happens after Wednesday? Well, we travel again (the triangle I've heard it called when driving between Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas) to Dallas for a few weeks with more doctor appointments, then back to Houston at MD Anderson on Jan. 30 for a follow-up MRI to see how the treatments worked. Continuing chemo (a pill taken the first 5 days of the month for a year) will be his new regime. He will take the Spring semester off and hopefully return in the Fall to UTD. We will continue to update everyone. We appreciate your many prayers, texts, calls, and cards.

Know about Headwear for Chemo Hair Loss: How to Choose
For many cancer patients, who have received chemotherapy, caps, hats, or scarves are common fashion accessories for them since hair loss is a common side effect of that treatment. Although, hair almost always grows up after treatment, alopecia can already be devastating for patients who are on a hard journey as the medical condition is known. During and after chemotherapy, some cancer patients may be able to use a different type of cap — not one that hides their balding scalp, but a cap that can help to prevent them from losing their hair or reducing the amount they lose. During therapy, cool headwear for cancer patients is connected to cooling systems. Additional types of caps are stored at very low temperatures in the freezer until ready to use.
The facts to know.
The loss of your hair due to chemotherapy may be one of the most difficult aspects of diagnosing your cancer. Our hair seems too many of us to be inextricably intertwined with our identity. Comfortably, with the confidence given to them by a beautiful new headwear for chemo hair loss, many can reclaim their identity. But, many women never bought or worn hats.
Full Head Coverage What To Look For In A Cancer Hat
The coverage of the hat is the first thing you should be considering when shopping for cancer headwear. You want a hat full of coverage. The hat, therefore, covers all areas of the scalp where the hair grows normally. Headwear full coverage disguises hair loss and provides a sense of security (physically and emotionally). Look for headwear for chemo hair loss that stretches through the neck and all around the hairline.
Soft Stock
Comfort is significantly important for delicate, bald scalps. On bare skin, soft, smooth and breathable textiles are best applied. Make sure that, you have a soft, smooth feeling on your hat. If you want to experiment with other synthetic products, bear in mind that, every hat not necessarily "soft" can be worn with a hat liner below to make a more comfortable feel.
Seamless or Few Seams
Look for headwear for chemo hair loss with minimal seams that have comfortable covering, because, without hair protection, the scalp may be more sensitive.
Volume:
Designs offering a certain volume on the head or back will give the underlying illusion of hair. This is a flattering, desirable appearance for most women.
Embrace the new look.
Don't wear your hat hanging on your head. This might sound like you have second thoughts on wearing it at all. Pull it low on your forehead, and wear it with confidence, is best.
Wear something really awesome on your hat. Find a fabulous brooch that you haven't worn for years or try a cheap new pin. Great costume jewelry can often be found without much time or money being spent.
It is not pleasant to lose your hair and get chemo, no matter how you look at that time but, cool headwear for cancer patients can add little bit comfort. You may even be hitting a hat long after your hair has grown back.

Day... Something
First off; this isn’t the final descent into Charlie Gordon territory; it’s just that my radiation treatments, chemotherapy, and experimental treatments have been desynchronized thanks to those slackasses in the radiation lab selfishly taking days off for Christmas and New Year’s (as I griped to the receptionist, “It’s just cancer, it can wait”). Although this is annoying, the current worst-case outcome of this situation is spending time arguing with pharmacies and insurance companies to coordinate things and get me more chemotherapy doses (or, as I call it nowadays, “Thursday”). I think it’s radiation day #13 (of 30) and chemo day #20 (of 42)(maybe; I might be looking at an extra week of chemo)(dreams do come true). But I’ll discuss that more later.
Big news; I think I have a solution - sort of - to the hair-loss problem. First of all, even though I always thought I wouldn’t be vain enough to be bothered by hair loss; but this one is definitely different - it’s not a sort-of natural bald look; it’s like a not-insignificant patch of scalp has been completely denuded by some deranged barber (which, come to think of it, isn’t totally inaccurate). And only on the right side of my head. In other words, if you saw me, you would undoubtedly know that there was something seriously wrong with me. I like to at least have a conversation with people before alerting them to that fact, so, like everything else, I figured it out. I took a multi-hat approach, which I’d recommend everyone else take. First off; you’re going to want a general-use, emergency-back-up hat that you can do most major activities in, because there’s a chance that becomes one of your primary hats (as, indeed, happened with me). You want a hat for the gym/errands/informal day-wear; in my case, this is the emergency back-up hat, because no one warned me the exact date when my hair would start falling out, and that was what I had. Fortunately, the emergency cap had the qualities I would recommend for the informal hat; it’s a baseball cap, so I don’t have a big brim that can snag when I’m doing shoulder presses; it’s leather and cloth, so I can sweat in it without fear; and if I completely destroy it, I’ll be out $10. And, even though it’s nothing I’d wear to a formal event, I don’t look too bad in it. However, for more formal activities (and “formal” here means “anything more important than going to the gym or corner store”), you’ll probably want something else. Feel free to do whatever you want; maybe your durable, sweaty cap will do double-duty for you (and, if so, kudos to you); I consulted with those sacred texts that always give me strength during the darkest hours - Wodehouse’s “Jeeves” stories, of course; and Wodehouse delivered the goods: ‘If I might suggest, sir – it is, of course, merely a palliative – but it has often been found in times of despondency that the assumption of formal evening dress has a stimulating effect on the morale.’ ‘You think I ought to put on a white tie? Spode told me black.’‘ “I consider that the emergency justifies the departure, sir.’” So, something with a little more pizzazz than the average cap. Not one of those awful trilbies every moron wears with their crocs - which, as an intriguing side-note, led me to a delightful primer on hat choices for the well-dressed gentleman (https://goodmenproject.com/featured-content/brand-thats-not-a-fedora-and-stop-wearing-it/). Something with enough brim to protect me from the ravages of the sun. You can probably see where I’m going with this; by the time I walked into Ye Olde Hattery, I had a pretty good idea what I wanted. As far as I can tell, the only downside to Stetson ownership is that you have to fight the urge to kill Gene Hackman with a Peacemaker. And it goes really well with long-sleeve button-up shirts, which I’m wearing more of, these days, thanks to those kidney-destroying antibiotics that make me sunshine-averse.
Good news, the radiation folks think my hair will grow back (which may or may not mean anything, since they also thought my hair loss would be minimal). They also reassured me that my weird, lop-sided look was somewhat trendy. The exact phrasing was, “You’re probably not into the tattoo or body-modification scene, but a lot of our patients in those circles have hair like that.” I think I get a gold star for not freaking out about how old that implication seems (not to mention I’ve had my skull pierced many times, and had to rebuild my neural pathways, which seems like a pretty dramatic modification). She (the radiation tech) wasn’t too happy when I pointed out that people who voluntarily choose to get haircuts like mine tend to terrorize college towns whilst besmirching the reputation of tiki torches.
I’m feeling probably worse than I ever have in my life. The good thing is, whenever I wake up, I know that’s probably about as horrible as I’ll feel all day, so at least that’s out of the way. The bad news is that the hangovers might kill me well before the cancer can. We’ve all had days where we woke up and quickly realized that was a mistake (waking up, I mean); we rarely get to wake up and felt - in every cell of our being - that it was a mistake. Thankfully, for those moments, there’s zofran, which gets my vote for greatest discovery of the 20th century. And not only does it take care of the nastiest chemo/radiation side effects, it so effectively destroys any tummy trouble that I can drink lots of coffee in a relatively short time - which is what it takes to get me moving, since, even with zofran and Tylenol, everything hurts, and I feel like I need a nap.
Good news; this week will mark the end of week 3, by the radiation calendar, and that’s when the worstest side effects are supposed to develop. Which doesn’t mean new symptoms or side effects can’t develop, or that current side effects can’t get worse (OH GOD, THE HAIR LOSS)(ALSO, OH GOD, THE SKULL-SPLITTING SUTURE-ACHES!); but, hopefully, if I can avoid the lethal tumor/inflammation headaches, seizures, and nausea this week, it’ll mean it’s less-likely to show up again in the coming year. I also used the word “hopefully,” which is usually an indication I’ve said something completely moronic and God is preparing to send an asteroid down on me. I might already have gotten a preview of that with the radiation calendar vs the chemo calendar discrepancy. For those of you at home; standard of care for GBM patients is thirty days of radiation treatment, spread over six weeks, and at-home chemo drugs every night for all six weeks. Followed by a rotation of 3-4 weeks without any treatment, and a week of chemo. Because I’m signed up for a miracle cure, my physicians want me in pretty much every single week for the next year for an infusion, or a blood sample, or a check-in, or more chemo, or maybe just to poke at me with a cattle prod (of course; that’s a best-case scenario; if everything goes horribly awry, they cut me loose after six weeks because the treatment’s not working). Unfortunately, because the radiation techs took off about a week for the holidays, I’ll burn through my temodar a week before my last radiation appointment. Right now, one of the nurses (and/or Research Coordinator) is working to reconcile these things. So, I can look forward to bureaucratic snags in the near future.
Anyway... WEIGHT: 217 lb. CONCENTRATION: Bad, but when you’re only getting a few hours of sleep a night and relying on assorted chemicals to prop you up. At this point, I’m really impressed by those people who can maintain a serious cocaine/heroin/alcohol addictions for years, because I’m completely burnt out after three weeks. Except for the zofran; I’m going to be completely reliant on that for years (that’s a somewhat tasteless joke, but I honestly have no idea how long all of this on-again, off-again treatment could go). MEMORY: Good. I think. I’m not sure; I haven’t really had a day requiring much recall. APPETITE: Good. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Excellent, considering that I start each day praying for death. I went to the gym today for several hours.  SLEEP QUALITY: What sleep? COORDINATION/DEXTERITY: Pretty good. I haven’t had any accidents or major missteps in the last few days, which is excellent, for me.  PHYSICAL: I am slowly becoming Bilious, the oh God of Hangovers (look it up). BUT, I haven’t puked (knock on wood), I haven’t missed any treatments. And I’m still going to the gym, so, ironically, from the neck down, I look better than I did ten years ago. SIDE EFFECTS: Far too many to count, but I’m still here and sort-of functioning. So, uh, hooray for that.

Amy Jensen, a UCS patient tells breast cancer to step aside and save her beautiful hair. Amy Jensen a survivor- “I knew I had cancer, but I wanted keep our lives as normal as possible for my girls!” Amy wanted to have another child. She tried for several months to get pregnant without success. At a routine mammogram, some calcifications were detected, which could indicate cancerous cells. She decided to seek further testing. The doctor scheduled an ultrasound for her. The reports indicated that she had calcifications or extremely dense tissue in her left breast. These tests were followed by a scheduled biopsy as a measure of reassurance. The morning of the biopsy Amy took a pregnancy test because she had missed a period and was surprised to learn she was pregnant. “That was not what I expected to learn that day. I was delighted to discover that I was going to have another baby- a little shocked but excited!” The biopsy was cancelled because of potential risks to the baby. However, Amy felt that there was still something not quite right. It was now June and she was about 13 weeks pregnant. Listening to her intuition, Amy made another appointment with the doctor, who reassured her that she should schedule a biopsy and the baby could be shielded from the x-rays required to complete the biopsy. The test came back positive for Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (IDC) and she was diagnosed with HER 2 positive breast cancer. The results were shocking! She and husband, Chad, are the parents of five girls. They gathered their girls to let them know she had cancer. The girls were very concerned that their mom would lose her hair. They worried that people would see her without hair and know she was sick. In fact, they were more worried about having a bald mom than they were about her cancer diagnosis! Dr. Teresa Reading, Surgeon at IMC Hospital, performed Amy’s surgery. The tumors were surgically removed, followed by a mastectomy and reconstruction at eighteen weeks pregnant. After a few weeks of recovery, Amy was sent to Utah Cancer Specialists for chemotherapy and Herceptin. “I was concerned, as any woman would be. I was worried about having no hair,” “I knew I had cancer, but I didn’t want people’s first impression to be “cancer patient’.” Not only because I didn’t want people to perceive me differently, but I didn’t want cancer to be the focus of our lives. I wanted to continue living my life as normally as possible.” Chad, husband and professor at BYU, was Amy’s primary caregiver. He decided to do some research. He connected with Dr. Gregory Litton an oncologist at Utah Cancer Specialists. Dr. Litton explained that the UCS facility in Murray currently had the DigniCap cooling system. The most advanced Scalp cooling system available for patients seeking to minimize hair loss during treatment. Amy said, “Although I thought losing my hair was inevitable at first, I decided to give the DigniCap a try.” The DigniCap was fitted to her head and the information and instructions were sent to her before her first chemo treatment. “The process was new to Utah Cancer Specialists,” Amy said. “They only had it for a few months, so we were learning together. This made me nervous, but they were trained, and Chad was a quick study.” He took the responsibility of running the machine and making me comfortable” “Honestly, that first chemo treatment, I was so worried that I was going to be in pain from the cap, that I didn’t even focus on the cancer treatment. “That first treatment also was my first experience using the DigniCap cooling system,” “Of course, I was filled with anxiety – not because I thought chemo would be awful, but because I had read about other cold caps and was concerned that DigniCap would similarly be extremely cold and very painful.” It was surprisingly tolerable. I had worked myself up unnecessarily!” Dr. Litton monitored her progress during the chemotherapy and Herceptin treatments that were coupled with the scalp cooling treatments. By the second round of treatment, he remarked how pleased he was to that Amy was keeping her hair. Amy said, “I’m so glad that I gave the DigniCap a try! Keeping my hair allowed me to feel more normal during my treatment and has helped me move forward after treatment.” Amy is now cancer free and has added a healthy baby boy, Jacob (born in late December of 2018), to the Jensen family.

Have you made your annual OB-GYN appointment yet? There’s no need to dread your annual visit. As most health problems go, early detection means effective treatment! So why is it so important to visit your gynecologist every year? And how is hair loss in women tied in with your annual exam?
1) Rule Out Cervical, Ovarian and Breast Cancer
What’s the first thing we think of when we picture our annual check-up? The unpleasant pelvic exam. Yes, we know it can be extremely uncomfortable but that’s no excuse for skipping it!
During a pelvic exam, your gynecologist will perform a Pap smear to rule out the presence of abnormal cells in your cervix. He or she will then check your uterus and ovaries internally for any signs of ovarian cancer. Getting diagnosed with cancer is scary enough, so why risk it by missing your annual visit? No one wants to deal with overwhelming anxiety and stress, which negatively impacts your overall health and can even trigger hair loss.
A Pap test is important, but so is having a professional breast exam. But don’t let that scare you! Being vigilant and pro-active is your best line of defense. An annual breast exam helps detect any lumps or any abnormalities that could be signs of breast cancer. If you’re over 40, your gynecologist may recommend getting an annual mammogram.
Treating cancer may require chemotherapy. In most cases, this involves hair loss – something that we all find terrifying. But here’s an interesting fact: some women undergoing chemo prevent hair loss and regrow their hair much faster with premium laser hair growth therapy devices such as the Theradome LH80 PRO. Remember to check with your oncologist first prior to beginning laser phototherapy.
Cancer treatment may also include surgery. Some women can suffer from telogen effluvium (sudden hair loss) as a result. This occurs when the count of healthy hair in the growth phase suddenly decreases, which triggers an increase in the resting phase of your natural hair growth cycle. While this type of hair loss is usually temporary, you can always minimize any shedding and speed up the process of re-growing your hair with the Theradome LH80 PRO.
2) Keep Your Family Plans on Track
Are you planning a pregnancy in the next year? Make sure your reproductive organs are in exemplary health by never skipping your annual. Don’t forget that oral contraception (a.k.a. – birth control) can also trigger hair loss in women. So make sure to prevent hair thinning with the Theradome laser hair growth helmet!
3) Ask About Hair Loss
Tell your gynecologist if you’re experiencing hair loss. He or she will conduct blood tests to rule out anemia, thyroid disease, and any obstetric and gynecological conditions that could be causing extra shedding. And feel free to ask questions about weight, blood pressure, exercise and nutrition, how to perform breast self-exams and any steps to take to keep your health in spectacular shape.
Schedule Your Appointment Today
Haven’t scheduled your annual exam yet? Call your gynecologist. There’s no need to be nervous: you’re taking control of your health and of your future. Never forget that early detection will always be your best line of defense – even when it comes to keeping your hair thick, lustrous and healthy as can be.

Endometriosis, what is it? What causes it? What are my treatment options?
*Disclaimer; research and information in the medical community is constantly changing and this information could change at any time. All of the information in this article will be cited at the bottom.
What is Endometriosis? Endometriosis is a disease where tissue similar (I will explain why this is so important in a moment) to the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus in other areas of the body. Endometriosis causes pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, and in some cases infertility. Endometriosis can remain active even during ovarian suppression and is believed by some specialists to actually produce it’s own estrogen.
So where does Endometriosis come from? No one truly knows, but there are theories.
This is why it is important that Endometriosis is classified as similar to the lining of the uterus and not the actual lining of the uterus. See, that would support Sampson’s theory of Endometriosis, also known as the Retrograde menstruation theory. If you aren’t familiar with that theory it states that “Endometriosis occurs through a process of endometrial tissue flowing back through the fallopian tubes during menstruation, entering the pelvic cavity and implanting and invading the surfaces of the pelvic structures.” This, however, has proven to be false as now they have found endometriosis in fetuses which would suggest that endo implants much earlier than menstruation even starts. This theory would also suggest that stopping someone’s period would not only stop the growth of Endometriosis but that a hysterectomy would cure them; which is an incorrect conclusion. Here’s a quote from Dr.Cook (an endometriosis specialist) “Retrograde menstruation, however, is a common phenomenon that occurs in 90% of women yet only 10% of women develop endometriosis and the refluxed material only contains minimal deposits of endometrial tissue. Furthermore, endometriosis consists of tissue that is similar but not identical to the native endometrium that lines the uterus.”
There have been a few studies done by Endometriosis specialists to find out what the cause is. So far it has been found that it could possibly be a genetic disease. There was also a theory that Endometriosis is an autoimmune disease which has now been disproven as well. You can read more about the theories of where Endometriosis comes from on Dr.cooks website and Dr. Sinervo's (Center For Endometriosis Care) website that I have a link to at the bottom.
Well then, what can we do to treat Endometriosis? As far as treatment goes there is no cure for Endometriosis. Due to the uneducation that health care professionals are supplied in medical school it is also completely mistreated and misdiagnosed. Currently the only treatments offered for Endometriosis are laparoscopic excision surgery, laparoscopic ablation surgery, birth control, depo lupron, and a new treatment Letrozole (also known as Femera), and two new drug compounds chloroindazole (CLI) and oxabicycloheptene sulfonate (OBHS) combined. Now let me discuss these treatments with you and why laparoscopic excision of Endometriosis with a specialist is currently the gold standard for treatment of Endometriosis.
Doctors are taught in medical school to treat endometriosis patients as follows; Birth control/lupron Depot, laparoscopic ablation surgery, and Hysterectomy. Now, why is this so harmful? They’re trying to treat us right? As a matter of fact, due to misinformation they are actually making things much harder on us (the patients). Here’s why
First we’ll discuss birth control. Birth control is the first line of defense doctors go to because many doctors believe that endo only happens on our period so stopping our period will stop the pain right? Wrong. Although it can help with some of the pain and symptoms associated with Endometriosis it is not a cure and does not always help especially if your pain is year round. They also believe that birth control will actually stop the growth of your Endometriosis and potentially cure you, which has been proven wrong. Endometriosis is believed to feed off of estrogen. So, if we stop estrogen production by using birth control, it will stop growing right? Again, wrong; Endometriosis is believed to produce it’s own estrogen and no matter what, you will always have excess estrogen in the body. Now, I’m not saying to stay off of birth control. It can help with some symptoms, but it will not cure you and most likely won't take away all your pain.
Let’s discuss Depot Lupron. So, how is this different from any other birth control? Lupron is a GnRH agonist. It was originally used to stunt puberty in children that had precocious puberty. Then was misused by many doctors who gave it to children to delay puberty in order to let them grow taller. After that it was used as chemo drug to treat prostate cancer. Ultimately these patients suffered with severe complications later in life such as Osteopenia, Osteoporosis, bone thinning, and side effects similar to chemo drugs. Here’s why doctors believe it can help Endometriosis. Lupron can shrink the Endometriosis and cause a patient not to have symptoms for years of their lives BUT it does not diminish the endo and it can cause severe complications in the body. I was told safely (and legally at the time) you could only be on it up to a year in your life because it is so toxic to the body. It causes bone density loss, hair loss, lowers your immune system, and can actually rot your teeth  (just like any chemo drug). Dr.cook wrote on his website “There are, however, several significant problems with the use of GnRH  agonists  for endometriosis treatment. First, it may not work. Endometriosis can produce its own estrogen and in these cases Lupron will not suppress the endometriosis activity or pain. In more advanced cases of endometriosis, even if the Lupron suppresses the endometrial implant activity, it does nothing for the pain caused by scarring and fibrosis resulting from the invasive endometriosis.” One other huge issue with Lupron is that since it does shrink Endometriosis lesions when your surgeon goes in to remove it, it is harder to see and therefore harder to remove.  Again, if you do your research and find that is the best option for you then do what you feel is right for your body. (there is more information on Lupron in the link down below)
Now, we have Letrozole (Femera). Letrozole was originally a chemo drug to treat breast cancer. Currently there is not much information on this drug, but it is very similar to Lupron.
For the last two drugs we have the drug compounds chloroindazole (CLI) and oxabicycloheptene sulfonate (OBHS). Now I can not find much information on these drugs and the study on them had the definition and theory of endometriosis wrong, but here are my findings. As far as chloroindazole goes I can find little to nothing on it but the actual chemical makeup of the drug and where to buy it. With Oxabicycloheptene still almost nothing. I did find an article that states this though “These findings suggest that OBHS provide protection directed at enhancing glial cell survival through the activation of GPER1, which, in turn, offers a novel insight into the molecular mechanisms behind the potential application of OBHS in treating Alzheimer’s disease (AD).” which is posted below.  In turn when you look them up separately there isn’t much information on them. Now when you look them up together a study comes up that states this “(a professor) tested the new compounds – chloroindazole (CLI) and oxabicycloheptene sulfonate (OBHS) – in mice with endometriosis and in human endometriotic cells. Both compounds block estrogen receptors – signaling proteins that regulate a range of genes, including some that affect immune response and promote inflammation.” and they claim “When they tested them on mice, the researchers found each drug reduced the amount of endometriotic tissue or prevented its growth outside the uterus. Each drug also reduced inflammation and stopped the growth of new neurons and blood vessels that support the misplaced womb tissue..” Which, is obviously incorrect since endometriosis is not from the uterus. I don’t personally trust this study, so hopefully more research can be done on these drug compounds in the future.
So, now that we’ve discussed drugs let’s discuss surgery. After your doctors are unable to control your pain with drugs, regular gynecologists will usually suggest a laparoscopic ablation surgery. What this means is that they will go in and remove the Endometriosis by burning it off. The reason this is not considered an effective treatment is because they are only burning the top layer of the Endometriosis off, leaving disease behind to grow into the tissue. Essentially it’s a tip of the iceberg situation. You don’t know what’s going on underneath. So why would they do this and leave you with disease still in your body? Well, in medical school they are taught that to remove an endometriosis lesion it’s just as easy as that, burning it. Which has been proven ineffective after countless women have had to return for several surgeries with a very high recurrence of Endometriosis lesions as well as scar tissue.
Now if your surgeon has “done everything they can” their next step is usually hysterectomy. Bare with me on this but it is believed.. That a hysterectomy… Is also a cure! Can you believe it? See this is also taught in medical school. If you remove the uterus the endo can’t possibly come out through the fallopian tubes and implant (Sampson’s theory) . And if you get rid of the ovaries no estrogen means no Endo right? I really hope you’re detecting my sarcasm.
I’ve discouraged you all so much it’s time to bring your spirits up and talk about the last treatment for Endometriosis. No regular gynecologist or uneducated doctor will suggest this. Laparoscopic excision of Endometriosis. This is where you excise (cut) the Endometriosis out and remove it from the body. Currently this is the gold standard treatment for Endometriosis. Why is that? When a trained specialist removes endo they are looking at the bigger picture. They are looking for different color variations of endo, the depth of the lesions, where the lesions are located (which is not just limited to the pelvic cavity). So they can go in and properly cut out all of the disease. The recurrence rate of endometriosis is only 10-15% in most cases if done by a trained specialist such as Dr. Cook or Dr. Sinervo. Again, this is not a cure but it is a treatment that has the most success so far.
I hope you all found this informative and helpful.
Thank you,
    Francesca Romano
***EDIT*** 10/15/2017 Updated information on endometriosis provided by Dr. John F Delumba Endometriosis specialist “Finally, another doctor (Dr Vidali) is going to start checking endometriosis specimens for estrogen and progesterone receptors. I have been urging other doctors to do this, and they will be amazed at the results. I have been doing this for 13 years. In the more advanced disease, and older patients, both receptors are usually positive (I have found 75% are positive for both estrogen and progesterone receptors. You need a receptor to stimulate the function of a cell). In the younger patients, and less advanced disease, I have found a predominance of progesterone receptors. Often in the same patient, there will be different receptors in different areas. Many times fibroblasts and mesothelial cells will be positive for hormones. My thoughts are that maybe these cells are deeper, and precursors to glands and stromal cells. The other aspect is that it does not seem to matter whether the patients are on artificial hormones, where they are in their cycle, or menopausal without hormones. My pathologist has found that progesterone receptors are usually highly positive versus less for the estrogen receptors. This is over thousands of patients I have found these results. The idea to do this was given to me by Mr Jeremy Wright from the UK. What does this mean for patients? Instead of making the assumption that estrogen makes this disease grow, we will then know what makes it grow. I was always taught that avoiding estrogen will stop this disease, and using progesterone will be beneficial. Progesterone is the PMS hormone, and if on it for a a year, the patient may have as much bone density loss as if in menopause for a year. I also was taught that using birth control pills (BCP) are the answer. I saw so many patients that have had significant side effects from the BCP, and the disease was growing, that I knew something did not make sense. The WHI (Women’s Health Initiative) looking at breast cancer, and it’s response to hormones was the instigator in looking at receptors for endometriosis. By the way, 65% of breast cancers are positive for both estrogen and progesterone. Conversely, breast cancer’s next most common receptors are estrogen, but it is progesterone (after both) in endometriosis. So, post surgery, patients may want to evaluate their receptors so they know what would be best for them. I know the thought is “all the disease” is removed by experts, but I have found fibroblasts and mesothelial cels that are positive to hormones, and these may be deeper precursors to glands and stromal cells (the 2 components of endometriosis). This may mean that even after all the disease is gone, there may be patients that could possibly have disease present after excision. Not saying it is for sure, but it is a possibility. The other issue is adenomyosis. I don’t get receptors in the uterus, as I would expect uterine cells to be positive for estrogen and progesterone. Maybe this is something to also be evaluated in the future. Some people wonder about the cost. Insurance companies do pay for these studies, including medicaid and medicare. They are easy to order during surgery. the surgeon just directs the nurse to order it on the specimens. Not too difficult. Fir the doctors that do not do this, I urger you “PLEASE, JUST TRY IT”. You will be amazed.“

1/22/2017 So here it is... So here it is, over a year since I first began chemo. and even longer since I got the call that said "you have breast cancer" (Oct. 30, 2015)I never would imagine I would start a blog about it, or even talk about it for all the free world to hear...I've only shared my story (and really only parts of it) with the most minimal audience. Although it shouldn't be something to be embarrassed about, it's definitely awkward for me. I've always been in charge of my life for the most part, I'm stubborn, determined, and very independent, and this was something that was going to present quite a challenge...I actually questioned myself as to whether or not I was up to the fight. After my initial freakout and pity party, I decided that since I had a son, animals, a family, boyfriend, co-workers, etc. , that depended on me and looked up to me, I better get my shit together and prepare to fight. First came the multitude of tests, followed by the lumpectomy, followed by more tests, and the port insertion....Merry Christmas to me. I got my wigs, ordered hats, and headwraps, and caps in preparation for my hair loss. That, and the fear of being incapacitated and unable to work, were the things that freaked me out the most initially. I got an extreme lesson in vanity through all this. I did order cold caps, and if you're not familiar with them, they are caps you wear on your head during and after chemo. in an effort to keep you from losing all your hair. I will explain those in detail in another post. My AC treatments started on Jan. 4, 2016, the first Monday in the new year. I was scared to death, fear of the unknown, before and throughout the first treatment; and while I have to say I did feel a little weird, I made it through without feeling horrible, the anticipation was definitely the worst part so far. 20 COMMENTS JEANNE MYY1/22/2017 07:37:31 PM You are amazing and strong.
