They want to ban tiktok because it’s how young people are getting information and organizing. That’s it. Nothing more. They fear an informed public, and especially an informed youth.
Jean-Pierre’s statement echoes a broader trend among Biden administration officials: the belief that TikTok presents an opportunity for a foreign government to manipulate the views of Americans. A spokesperson for Biden’s National Security Council tells Rolling Stone the TikTok bill “is an important and welcome step in ongoing efforts to address the threat posed by certain technology services operating in the United States that put at risk Americans’ personal information and our broader national security, including through the manipulation by foreign powers of Americans’ views and beliefs.” The Biden administration’s support for the bill comes as pro-Palestine content has flourished on the app, and the president faces increasing pressure to cut off military aid to Israel.
This bill is being voted on in the House TOMORROW the 13th. It's being fast tracked because the last time they tried to do this the normal way, they received so much pushback the bill became a poison pill. We need to push back AGAIN. Call your representatives at

I've been tracking this down for a while now and I've finally found confirmation of what I suspected: Google Maps imagery for Piha Beach in Aotearoa New Zealand captured the setup for filming of Our Flag Means Death's Season 2, Episode 8!
[EDIT 25 June: the north end current imagery is sadly no longer this version, but I've captured it for posterity here, and it's still visible in the free Google Maps Pro app- read on for more info].
On the left is the north end of Piha Beach with the inn set. On the right is the south end carpark with the film crew base.

Why is that cool to me? Because it truly was a fleeting moment in time, no more than a handful of days of possibility, and yet it was captured as the image on the map, at least for a period of time. As an archaeologist I love a moment preserved in time, and in this one you can even see the OFMD production crew on the beach and on the path. It's places and people caught in the flashbulb of this aerial image.
The specifics of how I pinned down the imagery and the date are in this Twitter thread, but the short version is, I was hunting for a better visual on the area immediately surrounding the inn while writing Full Fathom Five, and noticed that the carpark in particular seemed to line up exactly with images from the final day of filming.
The final day of filming overall was 13 December 2022, filming at Piha was on 12 December 2022, and this aerial image was taken on 11 December 2022.

I had already been through the first image to make a comparison to the aerial map and it looked like a match, but Google Maps had 2024 in their attribution. [Noting that I'd put 13 Dec on my image notes, but I'd got that tangled with the last day of filming in the Kumeū studio the next day, and it was 12 Dec on location].

Thankfully Google Earth came through with the actual date.

And I just took a further dig into Google Earth Pro, which allows you to switch between previous satellite images, and it confirms a date of 11 December 2022 for the north end image as well.
[EDIT 9 September 2024- thinking about this again and suddenly realised... you know what, very often things will put the date it was in the US when a picture was taken, even when that picture was taken on the other side of the world, in a different timezone. Which made me realise that actually, if this was taken on the 11th of December in the US, that was on the 12th of December in AoNZ. A quick search shows that Google Maps confirms the date can be one day out, so- odds increasing that we're seeing the actual filming of Ep8 here!]

You can also compare this to a few months earlier in March 2022, right around the premiere of OFMD S1 (everything moved so fast in hindsight!) when there was no inn in that spot.

Which means we now know that for now, if you hop onto Google Maps (not Google Earth, because they have a different image for the north end that does come from 2024) and zing on down to Piha Beach, you can take a look at a preserved moment in time from the filming of S2Ep8.
[EDIT 25 June: the north end image has now been updated to the 2024 version across all of Google Maps and Google Earth, but the south end is for now still from the filming day. You can find the previous version for the north end on Google Earth Pro].

Based on all of that, it's easy to see that we've got our inn right here circled in red, preserved in that moment in time, even though it was no doubt taken down as soon as filming was done.

Prep looks like it took a couple of days before filming; filming was pretty much done in a day, according to an article at the time.
So, there you have it- it's a minor little thing and it won't be up forever, but for now you can hop into Google Maps and see an aerial view adjacent to the filming of S2Ep8 at Piha. The other beach scenes from Eps 1, 3 and 8 were filmed at Te Henga/ Bethells Beach.

Perfection. Pure perfection. That was probably the only word that could describe his performance today.
My eyes were practically glued to the pitch as my gaze followed his every move. He was at his best today, making his way through the defenders, dribbling out every single one of them. That man was sickeningly good on the field, I had to admit as I watched from the stands. The atmosphere was loud, cheering and addicting. Not where I usually spent a friday night but I could get used to it. Especially when the view was this good.
At a party several weeks ago I had befriended another peer group of athletes, temporarly increasing my number of close friends from 2 to 7. Normal, right? Well, no, because when I woke up with a headache the next morning and checked my way-too-bright phone on the nightstand, it was blown up with messages. Whatsapp, Insta, TikTok... even Facebook. Photos, low-quality videos, theories. There were strangers on the internet speculating about me and a boy. That boy. The boy i later found out was Jamal Musiala. The pictures clearly showed me and him. Way too close. But the worst thing was: I couldn't remember what happened that night.
And that's what brought me here today, to the front row of the Allianz Arena. Because since that night, I couldn't help but wonder if he remembered me or anything that happened. I needed to see him.
The game was heated, the tension could've been cut by a knife. A winner wasn't yet clear when the ball made its way to Jamals feet again. Even from across the pitch I could see his expression fall into concentration as he skillfully turned and sprinted through the opposition towards their goal. It was like the whole stadium went quiet as the fans and rivals realised his chance. He moved to a perfect position to aim. Shot. Scored.
The south curve went wild. Fans spilled their beer. Plastic cups flew. Bayern took the lead in the 87th minute, now so close to a home win. The scorer wearing the number 42 on his back ran over to them to celebrate his goal. He was ecstatic, smiling as he got closer to the barricade.
That's when his gaze met mine.
It was sudden. Fast. But for that minuscule second I could see his eyes light up. A telling spark. Was it recognition? Our momentary connection was severed when his team mates finally caught up to him, engulfing him in a wild hug almost sending the young man to the floor. I smiled, deciding to push the heavy thoughts to the back of my mind for now and embrace the warm atmosphere.

The game was over, proudly ending in a 2:1 for Bayern Munich. The masses hurried to the exits, hoping to avoid the cramped traffic after the win. I lingered around, taking my time to collect my things and also to circumvent the crowded halls of the stadium for a little longer. My mind was racing as the stands cleared out, only leaving trash and spilled beer behind. I was about to sip up my jacket when-
"Y/N?"
I practically whirled around at the sudden voice and my gaze (once again) was met by those chocolate brown eyes that belonged to no other than Jamal. He took a small step back startled by my movement and send me an apologetic look for the scare. Now there was a litte more than an arms-length between us.
"Uh-hey!" I answered nervously, a shaky smile painting my lips. This wasn't at all how I imagined our encounter. My eyes scanned his appearance, he wore a baggy tracksuit jacket over his kit, the grass residues on his shorts still evident from the many fouls he had to endure. He hadn't even made it to the locker room. My gaze lingered on his lips before locking with his eyes again.
His mouth stretched into a sweet smile "Hey..."
Awkward silence. A few beats passed. I looked around nervously, my eyes now darting to anywhere but him. What was I supposed to talk about now? The weather?
Jamal also shuffled around nervously, looking down at his cleats. It was clear we both beat around the bush. He looked back up at me, his gaze resembling that of a deer. "So...Why-I mean, what brought you here, I didn't think I'd see you again..." he asked carefully. A blush tainted my cheeks "Uhm, I just... wanted to see you." I started, embarassed "You know, after the party." pausing for a moment, I thought back to the pictures of us kissing, contemplating if I should ask the question and just get it of my chest. Yeah. Best option.
"Do you remember anything about that night? Like what happened exactly? Did we... do something?"
It tumbled out of my mouth, one ask fused to another. I watched as his posture shifted, his eyes slightly widening. "What? No,no,no." he shook his head. A small wave of relief washed over me but it couldn't tame the burning lack of knowledge about that night. "Then what happened, the only thing I know is that I woke up with a headache.". He took a step back, processing my words before answering. "We had a good night you know, dancing, drinking...kissing. It went well until some drunk incel pushed you and you hit your head on a door frame..." the man paused, anger flashing in his eyes for a second. "He knocked you out. I drove you to the hospital. Your friends picked you up."
My mouth opened to reply, but quickly closed when no good answer formed on my tongue. It wasn't what I expected, but I still didn't know what to think about it.
"You waited at the hospital?" I asked, now completely catching up to what he said.
"Yeah." Jamal looked down to the floor again, hiding the faint red that now tinted his cheeks. "I wanted to ask for your number but... after everything happened I didn't think it was appropriate..." He trailed off.
"Oh-OH..well..." I was taken aback. Caught off-guard. Then I suddenly felt confidence seep through my body.
"You could ask me now."
He looked at me, a beat passed, then his face lit up. He took his phone out of his pocket and handed it to me, ready to enter the digits. As I was about to give him the phone back, he cleared his throat.
"Are you free next friday? It's my free day and maybe we could meet up at a café?" He asked, also growing more confident now. I blushed, and nodded, still a little overwhelmed by what just happened. "Yes, yes I'd love to. 5pm? Hopefully this time I'll remember..." I chuckled and Jamal quickly joined in. The situation now blurred into a sweet moment as we stood in the stadium that was completely empty. I smiled as I looked up at him. His eyes drifted to my lips before they met mine again.
"You better stay away from the door frames."

Anna Kai believes in self-gaslighting. On TikTok, as @itsmaybeboth, she markets beauty products for Garnier, Nivea, and Nexxus Hair Care while dispensing relationship advice to her 1.3 million followers. “If you can gaslight yourself into believing the man that doesn’t love you actually loves you, then why can’t you gaslight yourself into believing you will find a man who actually does?”
For Blaine Anderson, finding the right partner is all about savvy marketing, which “great guys often SUCK at,” a note on her website exclaims. She has hacks for every possible scenario that can, and will, arise during the dating process: how to text like a “high-value man,” what first-date mistakes to avoid, how to make women obsessed, and the best ways to attract them without talking. In case you were curious, it starts with good posture and grooming. “If you haven’t been shopping since the Obama administration, it’s time,” she says in a video uploaded to TikTok in May.
“As a relationship therapist, I’ve literally spent my career studying the art of attraction and human psychology, so I know that these things work,” Kimberly Moffit, a Toronto-based psychotherapist, said in a TikTok video from 2022. Maybe your crush is shy and you want to know if he is “micro-flirting” with you? One tell-tale sign: dirty jokes. “An aggressive guy is just gonna hit on you,” she said, “but a shy guy is really gonna test the waters first.”
If you haven’t heard, it’s boom times for dating influencers. According to a new survey of single adults aged 18 to 62 conducted by the app Flirtini, one in four people rely on TikTok as their primary source of relationship information, and almost 50 percent of people surveyed turn to social media for dating advice.
This phenomenon has created an ecosystem of thoughtful, overzealous, trend-chasing dating influencers who think they know what’s best for you. The marketplace is now overrun with gurus offering up romantic hacks and how-tos to anyone who will listen. Everyone from credentialed therapists and life coaches to that annoying friend who just discovered bell hooks’ All About Love and wants to share everything they learned brands themselves a dating influencer these days. The effect has been seismic. On TikTok, the hashtags #datingadvice and #relationshipadvice have upwards of 16 billion views.
And it’s not all bad advice per se. Kai’s self-gaslighting tip is actually quite clever. (Kai and the other influencers mentioned in this story did not respond to messages seeking comment.) There’s just one problem: Relationship misinformation is spreading fast.
A growing number of young adults now get their news from TikTok, according to a 2023 Pew Research Center study, “so it makes sense that they’d turn to the app for relationship advice too,” says Liesel Sharabi, a professor at Arizona State University who specializes in the effect technology has on interpersonal relationships. The increased reliance on the platform as a go-to source for romantic guidance has led many users to form parasocial relationships with advice-giving influencers. Unlike face-to-face, IRL relationships, these tend to be one-way. But emotionally, they feel like the real thing.
“Someone might feel like they’re getting dating advice from a trusted friend because they’ve developed such a strong sense of familiarity and connection with that person,” Sharabi says. “The problem is that when it comes to dating, there are plenty of people who call themselves experts on TikTok without any sort of training or qualifications, which can make it difficult to separate fact from opinion.”
Not all advice is created equal. As dating influencers gain more traction across social media, the proliferation of relationship misinformation becomes harder to contain. This, Sharabi describes, is “false or misleading information about relationships that can’t be evaluated using scientific data and which may perpetuate harmful stereotypes.”
The increased spread of questionable dating advice is having real-world consequences. According to the Flirtini study, 46 percent of people faced relationship struggles after following TikTok advice, with 23 percent saying it led to a break up. It begs the question: Has our need to be plugged in all the time—let's face it, many of us are hooked on the booze of social media—outweighed our rationale as humans, leading people to look for advice from the wrong people?
“Relationship advice that is attention-grabbing may not always be the most sound or accurate to people’s actual relationship needs,” says Aparajita Bhandari, an academic at the University of Waterloo who’s conducted research on TikTok. “The way our current online attention economy works breeds content that is outrageous or tends toward misinformation because it is what goes viral and gets views. Unhealthy ideas or advice can spread so quickly on a platform like TikTok that it can be difficult to even trace back to one specific source.”
For some dating influencers, love is not actually the endgame—status and comfort are. There is a dedicated core of influencers who can teach you how to marry rich, live comfortably, and never work again. For them, it is all about “high-value” dating. Love is simply the icing on the cake to a life of worry-free, jet-setting luxury.
Shera Seven is a household name among this contingent of dating influencers, beloved for her matter-of-fact approach to modern partnership. In her eyes, love is nothing more than a business transaction. “Make sure the second date is a money date. The faster you get him to spend money, the faster he attaches to you,” Seven recommended in a recent video. “You’re seeing him as a provider, a baller—and he might not even see himself that way—but now that you are perceiving him that way, he’s going to start acting that way. Drag him into your delusion.”
Influencers with large followings like Seven, Cam Donnez, and Niko of The Daddy Academy carry an impression of social authority, and therefore credibility, says Makana Chock, a communications professor at Syracuse University. But something else is also at work. More and more, TikTok is being used as a search engine in the same way many of us use Google.
“Relationships are areas where people often feel the greatest insecurities and need advice. We are sometimes, however, reluctant to turn to personal contacts for help,” Chock adds. “We may be reluctant to reveal weaknesses, concerned about close others’ conflicting motivations, or skeptical about their relationship skills.”
But relying too heavily on TikTok’s algorithm has repercussions, especially in matters of the heart. “The algorithm isn’t necessarily incentivized to recommend the most scientifically sound advice,” Sharabi says. “It’s going to prioritize content that leads to engagement in terms of likes, followers, and views. What makes something go viral on TikTok isn’t necessarily that it’s good advice—in some cases, it might even be the opposite.”

Is blogging still relevant in the age of TikTok and Instagram?
What is Blog?
A programmer called Peter Merholz abbreviated the term “weblog” to “blog” in 1999 (Goldstein, 2009).A blog is similar to an online journal or diary where bloggers can express their ideas, views, and emotions throughout time. However, blogs can sometimes seen as contentious. There are several blogging platforms like Tumblr, and Medium. It is simple to build and maintain a blog. Once registered, bloggers can begin to write any content. Bloggers can add links, GIFs, and images to improve their blog’s quality.
In my perspective, blogging is still important in the era of TikTok and Instagram and will keep on being a vital component of social media today, with distinct roles in fostering sociality and community-building. To figure this out, it is crucial to explore the nuances of Blogging, TikTok, and Instagram.
Blogs give writers the opportunity to dive deeply into topics, add context, and present complex opinions (Indeed Editorial Team, 2023). Additionally, blogs may be searched and archived, which makes them useful as databases of information on certain topics.
TikTok enables users to view, create, and share videos online (D’Souza, 2023). According to Al-Maroof et al. (2021), TikTok has become a popular application with a micro-video function.
Instagram’s popularity has skyrocketed, and it has 1 billion active users per month, which enables users to upload photos and videos (Faelens et al., 2021).
Blog: Nurturing Digital Communities, Promoting Sociality in Public Sphere
Blogs can help foster the growth of digital communities. On the other hand, individuals can utilize blogs to position themselves as an authority in their particular fields. They enable knowledge and ideas exchange, which helps build a loyal readership. Blogs can also build online communities centered on particular topics or pastimes where participants converse and argue, contributing to the public sphere in their particular fields. Additionally, commenting on blogs enables readers to participate in conversations and interact with bloggers and other readers. TikTok and Instagram also promote sociality, yet in distinct methods, as they prioritize immediate interactions. For example, uploading short video clips and images, which is more to keep users’ attention. In short, TikTok and Instagram may be ephemeral, but the notion of a blogging community may be more profound and involved (Yessenova, 2016).
Besides, blogging creates networked publics around mutual passions and conversations. These networked publics were frequently dispersed and facilitated in-depth discussions. The fast-paced structure of short-form content also builds networked publics on TikTok and Instagram; however, the interactions are fragmentary and transitory (Liu et al., 2022).

A blog can garner attention and have a significant impact on people when it deals with hot-button political topics. The political parties have extensively exploited blogs and social media platforms in their schemes and initiatives since the first strategically focused political blog, Howard Dean’s ‘Blog for America’ was built in 2003 (Villar et al., 2017). A blog’s ability to impact political participation will increase with how valuable it is seen. Furthermore, blog content can be easy to search throughout time (Morris, 2023). They have an enduring online presence. In contrast, content posted on TikTok and Instagram may be ephemeral and more difficult to find when it vanishes from a user’s stream.

Emotional Resonance in Blogging
A blog frequently serves as a kind of public journal, collecting unfiltered feelings and comprehensive narration. Longer-form emotional expression enables more in-depth contemplation and understanding. This can be called as “Emotional Resonance”. The expression of emotions in blogs may make it easier to enter social networks by spurring more comments and similar sentiments from blog audiences, which is a step toward connection and understanding (Hine et al., 2019). Since TikTok and Instagram place an emphasis on visual, brief content that appeals to immediate viewing habits, it may be more difficult to establish a deeper feeling of connection with readers on these platforms. When compared to more extensive, more complicated blog postings, this structure may restrict how deeply and intricately emotions are expressed. Although a TikTok video or an Instagram story may have an instant effect, blog pieces consistently have more lasting value and reverberation. In addition, blogs are designed to hear varied views. TikTok and Instagram’s algorithms could generate echo chambers that favour particular content. (Altered State, 2023). Consequently, there will be group polarization and misunderstanding.

In my perspective, blogging is still relevant in the age of TikTok and Instagram, particularly for community-building, participation in the political sphere, and emotional resonance. Hence, the practice of blogging should remain relevant in the ever-evolving digital environment due to its long tradition of in-depth information.

The moon was high up in the sky with only the muffled sounds of the bustling city surrounding him. Try as he must to focus on those, he can't help but have his mind slowly drift to you. These occurrences have been happening more and more often to him and it's slowly eating him up.
Regret, despair and hatred.
What would've happened if he didn't leave then? How would your life with him turn out if he had the courage to tell you his innermost feelings? Why, just why did he have to turn his back to you on that day? He brings his hands up to his face, one desperately wiping the tears threatening to spill while the other hitting his own head in self-loathing and in an attempt to distract himself from these awful thoughts. The days have been passing by too fast and his condition had been worsening. It hurt him to stay and hold on but a part of him still wishes to remain in this world where he can still feel the warmth of your soft hands and be able to lay his hands eyes upon that smile of yours that he just can't get enough of. Luke starts to smile as he imagined your cheery voice and your lovely smile. He closes his eyes to preserve the image of you but it was all slowly fading. Everything around him was turning dark. He keeps his eyes tightly shut, despairingly searching within his mind a single memory where he can see that smile of yours once more but to no avail, it was all lost. He immediately gets up from his bed and doesn't even bother to dress properly. He leaves from the door of his antique shop and starts to head to your apartment in a rush..that slowly dies down to a halt. Where did you reside in? Where was the place he alwaus frequented in whenever he craved your touches? Who's touches did he so hopelessly yearned for? He was in distress. His vision was blurring though he didn't know why. He stands frozen on the sidewalk, bringing his hands up to his head, hitting it repeatedly while continuously speaking these words, "Where was I going? Who was I going to? Why— what—?!" he was growing agitated. He moved his body but he was well unaware of it. His world was spinning and the city lights flickered within his vision. He was so utterly confused that tears had quietly formed in his eyes without his knowledge. He kept walking and walking, not knowing where he was headed when suddenly, this single light grew brighter and brighter and— he was pulled back by somebody. For a second, his vision clears and before him was the most alluring face he had ever laid his eyes on. He was in a daze, eyes focused solely on the person's eyes that he barely heard the words they told him, "Luke, are you okay? What are you doing here?!" The person was in distress as they gazed down at him with worry and suddenly, he was confused once again. 'Luke..?' it sounded so familiar but he couldn't put his finger on it. He remained silent while still gazing up at the stranger; the longer he looked, the more his heart raced. "You're...captivating.." two words were uttered softly by him as his gaze turned from dazed to full of love. The person's worry was increasing by the minute when he suddenly feels a strong sting on his head and his vision darkens.
The next moment, he awakes to an unfamiliar room filled with bright lights and the sound of continously, stable beeps. His eyes felt so heavy but he kept them open nonetheless. Suddenly, somebody comes to view. 'The love of my life..' no other thought came to his mind but those words. He slowly but surely realized his situation so he smiled and brought his hand up to the person's face. "...I may be slowly forgetting that overly affectionate eyes of yours or that sweet smile that never ceases to infect me with your joy but, my love for you will always stay in my heart, even after it stops beating...." He spoke softly. The person who's face he is caressing was blurred but he still somehow caught sight of the wetness dripping down their face. Tears perhaps? He felt bad for making him his dearest cry but, as long as they remain eithin each other's arms, that's all he'll ever wish for.

I really love this YouTube channel because it focuses on two things I enjoy, which are cooking and different cuisines. The creator posts videos of himself cooking Korean dishes, vlogs in Korea, Day in the Life videos, and making Kimchi, which is how he became famous for. I originally started seeing a few TikTok's of him making these different dishes, and then when I found his YouTube channel, I started watching daily. He doesn't usually talk much in his videos, instead he increases the cooking noises (cutting, mixing, boiling, etc.) which is kind of relaxing in my opinion. This will help me build my Design Project because it allows me to see how he appeals to his audience and how he keeps viewers engaged. He mixes up his content between cooking How-To's, and vlogs which keeps viewers coming back for more and also adds cultural elements. His channel also shows how to alter your content based on the space. His TikTok videos are very fast paced and to the point due to the time restraint, while his YouTube videos are much longer and go more into depth. This helps get in touch with different viewers, ones that only view his shorter videos vs. the ones who want to watch 10+ minutes of content. Seeing this on his channel, helps me think of the different approaches I can take when creating content, so it fits the space I am working in as well as appeals to the correct audience.

Why does TikTok do that the thing where the previous video is still playing and the one your on doesn't start?
Why does every Online Service suffer from DDOS attacks all the time?
At my previous Job, we created a TikTok-like for watching video snippets for work video tutorials.
And even though we had reduced the amount of videos to be watched to a limited amount and/or limited to videos on the device itself; I was tasked with trying to figure out why it has the same Issue TilTok does.
Which; theoretically because we reduced the overall capacity of the app from "essentially unlimited" to ten; should've alleviated the problem.
This problem also occured on Local hosting the entire app.
I don't even think YouTube found a fix for this.
Now there are two ways to stream a video; either you download the whole thing, or you use a data-buffer.
A data-buffer allows you download a partial sequence of a file, while *still* opening it as normal; which means you can start using the file or watching the video *despite* it still being downloading.
Which is how many services both video and audio avoid these kinds of problems.
Well; the issue *actually* lays in the HTTP protocol itself. And all fixes for this issue have to be built around the limitations of HTTP itself, AND around browser Video operation limitations.
Multi media content like audio and video tend to be packaged as it's own "pseudo-app" in the web page. And this is the same no matter how you're using a web page, through a browser or an app.
Reusable modular design and all.
And all of the current APIs, whether you're using your own, or you're using a ready made solution, have this problem.
Just so you can know our solution; we downloaded ALL the videos and created a MediaPlayer that had limitations on how fast you could switch between videos. Which had to stop video playback, unload the current media, load the new media, and then start playing.
Load/Unload means the media container we were using to play content.
It isn't the best solution, but it's the way we needed to make it work.
But what does that have to do with DDOS attacks you might be saying.
Well; the HTTP protocol is the same no matter how you use it; Offline, online, virtual, whatever...
And hundreds if not thousands of not hundreds of thousands of users have to connect to a single webserver to use a service.
These Valid Users can look like a "DDOS Attack" because of the information lost for each failed connection.
You know when you're loading a webpage with a crappy connection and the loading bar keeps getting stuck half way and you've got no response for the server?
Failed connection.
This doesn't mean that certain hackers aren't DDOSing cuz they're boarded and can't afford the game; it's just that it's mostly the limits of Physics.
Both of these issues combined give us a view of the internet that is a bit dated. We haven't really updated the protocols we use in a bit.
Social Media could use the same Protocol we use for E-Mail (SMTP) for everything it does; but it doesnt.
Either because they don't want the ability to connect outside of the app itself, or because they just didn't think about it.
So they use AJAX and HTTPS connections for these things.
But even if they did try; I think even our Email services are avoiding SMTP for a lot of operations.
All of this adds up to the same reasoning. Our aging Internet Infrastructures aren't really prepared for this kind of communication. Especially when we start using VPNs for Security and Internet Traffic Reduction.
Just think about it this way; we're using the same internet protocols we had when Nintendo Sattellevision was a thing that did make it to America.
And this affects the *whole* internet.
Even the web addresses we have designed are too heavy; leading Elon Musk to finally get his server address x.com instead of Twitter.
Yes, that simple reduction in the web address increased Twitter speeds ten-fold.
These are simply the limitations we're facing, and simply increasing internet speeds won't fix them.

Reducing the Stigma one Platform at a Time

The world of social media advertising is fast-paced and daunting for many companies to jump into. Whether it's 5 likes or 50,000, every company should be taking their social presence seriously along with promoting content that truly relates to their overall goal.
I have decided to analyze the non-profit organization Mental Health First Aid. They are an organization that provides mental health training to those who are seeking a certification. Additionally, they provide support for those who may be facing mental health struggles. In today’s society, mental health is a key topic among people. With over 15,000 trainers teaching 4 million people around the world, it’s encouraging to see that mental health is now a global topic. Just like large corporations who pay millions of dollars towards social media advertising, non-profit organizations use the same tactics to reach their own audience. The main difference between the two are the financial funding that can be applied to an advertisement campaign. For example, according to Statista.com, the fast food chain McDonalds spent 388.9 million US dollars on advertising in the year 2023 alone. This simply would be impossible for a non-profit to match, as they don’t receive any sort of financial funding other than donations or government help. The Mental Health First Aid organization only received $30 million total from former President Barack Obama in 2014 & 2015. This just shows the disparity that many organizations are faced with when they decide to explore the advertising market.
The platforms I chose to analyze are the MHFA pages on Instagram, Twitter/X, and TikTok.
I chose the MHFA Instagram page first, as I have previously followed them in the past due to my knowledge about their organization. The first metric I had noticed was the number of followers this page had, 13,100. Although it was the United States version of the MHFA page, I clicked on some other results that are associated with MHFA globally, but the follower count was drastically lower than the US one. After scrolling through their posts, I was blown away that they had low counts such as 27, 17, and 42. For a page with thousands of followers, how can this like count be so low? According to Natalie Zfat who wrote the article “This Is Probably The Reason You're Not Getting More Likes On Social Media”, the low like count could be due to the fact that MHFA isn’t speaking to their audience individually. My suggestion to increase their Instagram metrics would be through promotional giveaways and other raffles (advanced metric). The items can be as simple as a t-shirt, hat, or even a sticker (as a non-profit, financial flexibility is low). This may motivate the 13,000 people following them as it’s a simple task, yet so rewarding from a promotional standpoint. I also think that doing this same idea would improve their channel metrics. With people sharing the post to enter the giveaway, the Instagram algorithm may pick up on the increase in interactions within the page. And finally, I think behaviorally they should create moderated group chats within the Instagram platform for those who want to talk about MHFA. This will give their audience a sense of community, as they are surrounded by those who are actively involved in the mental health topic. Combining all of these suggestions would be a great way for MHFA to increase their audience, like count, and engagement within Instagram.
The next platform I pulled apart was their Twitter/X page. Just like Instagram, there were numerous pages dedicated to MHFA. I once again chose the United States one as it was not only the top option, but has over 34,000 followers. This metric was double Instagram’s and I noticed the same content that was posted on the previous platform, but realized that their “view” count was around the 200 mark, which again didn’t add up. There were a couple retweets by people who were either supporters of mental health, or other organizations that dedicate themself to the same themes. Unlike a giveaway, I think that partnering up with one of the similar organizations could be a great way for them to increase their Twitter/X following. Partnering up would allow two different audiences to combine, and support one another for the same root cause. This would increase waves of their media, as they have double the audience supporting each page (advanced metric). Based on the channel metrics of Twitter/X, I think paying for “Twitter Blue” would be extremely beneficial, and financially feasible (only $8-$11 per month). This program allows the account to receive a blue checkmark on their account (associated with verified users), along with the ability to post longer content (increased word count) which may draw more and more people in. Finally, I think a good behavioral metric to target on this platform would be to increase the number of follower integrated questions. Asking their audience different opinions will increase the engagement rate overall.
Finally, I explored the TikTok world for an account associated with MHFA. After discovering their page, I was faced with the same sort of dilemma related to their views and likes. The view count on their videos ranged from 20 to 1,800 (considerably low for TikTok). The like count is also low as they only received 3 to 20 likes on the posts. I would suggest using more channel metrics such as hashtags. They can be simple ones such as “#self help” or even “#mental health". The page only featured one or two per post, which isn’t enough at engaging a consistent audience. Using advanced metrics can also benefit the growth of their page. They can use promoted videos (costs a small amount of money), which would grow their video views, likes, and page visits. And finally I would recommend contacting an influencer that is popular on TikTok to partner up and have that person post content that promotes their page and message. TikTok seems to be influencer based, as many people who hold strong followings on the platform are involved in some sort of promotional campaign.
