sometimes i get so mad about online advertising being so lawless compared to other mediums (ex. television ads occupying specific spots in programming or a small fraction of the screen while online ads can sprawl wherever the hell they want And bog down computer performance) i find myself wishing for someone to enact legislation leading to their regulation, but how likely of a possibility do you think that actually is?
it depends tbh. we do have related stuff like CCPA and GDPR (obligatory meme that I have saved on my phone:)
...so it's not impossible for further laws/regulations to crop up down the line. my main thoughts here are that (1) adtech changes so rapidly that I think any specific legislation is almost certainly doomed to become obsolete before long (compounded further by the fact that most lawmakers barely seem to understand the internet, let alone a fucking RTB supply chain lol), (2) enforcement would be a nightmare considering there are literally several hundred billion bid requests generated EVERY SINGLE DAY (googled this stat to make sure I wasn't misremembering and got another dr. fou link lol. can't escape this guy) and (3) believe it or not, the online advertising industry is largely self-governing... or at least tries to be.
an organization called the IAB (interactive advertising bureau) sets a ton of standards around not only the logistics of buying and selling ads (they are, for example, the creators of the OpenRTB protocol for real-time auctions), but also the quality of the ads and ad space being sold. there are tons of initiatives they've proposed that have widespread buy-in among the industry, like ads.txt, which everybody who's anybody uses these days.
you do, of course, have to buy in to what the IAB is metaphorically selling, but their decrees hold a lot of weight among all sections of the ads supply chain—both reputable buyers and reputable sellers regularly adjust their behavior based on IAB guidelines. for example, two of the things you mentioned:
"ads can sprawl wherever they want": the IAB has about a million guidelines for where ads can physically go on a page, how they can run (e.g., video ads must be muted by default or they aren't IAB compliant), and what percentage of the visual real estate they can use up. publishers obviously can and do violate these guidelines, but third-party tools exist to make sure your ads aren't running on pages that pull that shit. and as a rule, advertisers actively dislike buying ad space on awful cluttered pages because they know the pages are shitty and the impressions are less valuable.
"big down computer performance": people call those heavy ads! the IAB sets standards around ad performance (the lighter the better, basically) and google chrome even implemented a feature that automatically kills heavy ads before they eat up your whole CPU. some performance based-issues are also caused by malvertising which is uhhh a whole other thing but no one likes it and everyone who matters is trying to stop it.
which isn't to be naive here or an industry shill or whatever because Fucking Obviously these problems persist. I actually had to email the advertising division at conde nast recently because I kept getting malicious redirect ads on their mobile site (they haven't responded yet... return my calls bitch!) so clearly even well-meaning reputable websites and ad platforms and advertisers continue to have issues with IVT and whatnot. the struggle is eternal.
but arguably so is the struggle against basically anything that's legislated, like property crime or whatever. I'm admittedly not optimistic that formal laws would fix digital advertising, only put a slightly hotter fire under people's asses to clean up their respective acts better. which is certainly a good thing, it's just a rapidly evolving game where the bad actors are always coming up with new tactics.
fun and related example: I read a recent retrospective about the kids behind the mirai botnet, which originally started out as a DDoS-for-hire scheme but pivoted to ad fraud when it turned out that was way more profitable. possibly the largest botnet ever (don't quote me on that though) and it was spun up by three teenagers!!!

Ensuring Brand Safety on Publisher's End
Advertising landscape's prime focus has been on brand safety for a while now. It has become a prime concern for advertisers and publishers alike. With the exponential growth of online content, ensuring that ads appear in a safe and suitable environment has become a complex challenge. This concern has not only impacted the advertisers but has also become an alarming concern for publishers as well.
In 2019, publishers in the UK lost ad revenue worth £170 million. During the same timeline, big brands also started to audit the sites where their ads were being placed. This resulted in the elimination of a significant number of websites. But why did brands suddenly get intrigued by the ad placement?
This happened because brand safety was being jeopardized.
1. To Avoid Any Negative Impact on the Brand's Image: Brands spend years of effort to build a positive image in their audience's eyes but wrong ad placement can damage it in seconds.
2. Financial Loss: If advertisers discover their ads appearing in unsafe environments, they may pull their campaigns, leading to financial losses for publishers.
Also, according to a report, over half of the customers will reconsider buying from a company if its advertisements appear next to offensive material.
How Publishers can Ensure Brand Safety?
1. Ad Policy and Guidelines: Publishers should establish clear ad policies and guidelines to define what constitutes safe and appropriate content. This documentation should be readily available to advertisers and regularly updated to address emerging challenges.
2. Quality Content Curation: Publishers need to curate high-quality content that aligns with their target audience and ensures brand safety. Publishers should maintain a careful check on the sources of their traffic in order to spot and fix irregularities before they become issues.
3. Work with Trusted partners: In order to provide content management and measurement, site analytics, login systems, and monetization, publishers must collaborate with a variety of technological partners. For many of these suppliers to function, publishers must include their third-party integration code. For ad tech companies in particular, adding a line to the ads.txt file may be necessary. These connections may be able to produce the technological backdrop for harmful behavior such as security lapses, domain spoofing, and inventory exchange. Because of this, it's important to only deal with reputable suppliers, refrain from adding too many "RESELLER" lines to the ads.txt file, and routinely check third-party code and the ads.txt file for unnecessary and redundant entries.
4. Focus on Viewability Score: A decent viewability score is one that is over 60%, however, premium publishers typically have ratings much higher than that. A particularly low viewability score may have a number of causes. Inventory with a poor viewability score will either not be bid on or have bids reduced by advertisers, DSPs, and brand safety suppliers. Publishers must thus keep an eye on their score and take steps to raise it.
Conclusion
Brand safety is a critical aspect of publishers' responsibilities in today's digital advertising landscape. By prioritizing brand safety, publishers can protect the integrity of their advertisers' brands, maintain customer trust, and safeguard their revenue streams. Following the missing manual outlined in this blog will help publishers navigate the challenges and complexities associated with brand safety, ultimately contributing to a safer and more sustainable advertising ecosystem for all stakeholders involved. Remember, brand safety is not just an option; it's an essential requirement for publishers to thrive in the digital age.

There is a problem with ads.txt! Two simple solutions
Are you seeing an ads.txt error message on your Adsense dashboard that says your revenues are at risk?
So far, I've had a lot of questions about it. As a result, I choose to write about it and how to overcome it. Let's go through what Ads.txt is and how to fix it.
Ads.txt is a text file that contains advertisements.
Advertisements.txt is a standard text file that includes your publisher ID and the Company domain name that is authorized to deliver ads, and it looks like this.
Are you seeing an ads.txt error message on your Adsense dashboard, indicating that your revenues are at risk?
I'm receiving a lot of questions about this. As a result, I decided to write about it and how to get rid of it. Let's look at what Ads.txt is and how to fix it.
What exactly is Ads.txt?
Advertisements.txt is a standard text file that contains your publisher ID and the Company domain name that is authorized to deliver ads, and it looks like this.
Why is it required?
You define every advertisement company that you are authorizing to sell their products or services on your website in the ads.txt file, which helps to avoid online fraud by allowing buyers to readily validate that they are seeing ads from reputable organizations.
Requirements:
You'll need your publisher id for Adsense, and you can acquire it from the ads.txt file using the approach below.
Login to your Adsense account.
From Dashboard, Click on Accounts–>Settings–>Account information.
How do I fix the ads.txt error?
There are two simple solutions to this problem.
Using a plugin “Ads.txt Manager”.
Creating and Uploading ads.txt file directly to the root directory.
The easiest option is to utilize a plugin, however many users dislike plugins since they already have too many plugins and don't want to add more to their website. Don't worry, I'll cover both approaches.
Resolve Ads.txt error using the plugin.
Go to Plugins –> Add New
Search for “Ads.txt Manager”
Click Install and Activate
Copy the below code
Go to Settings –> Ads.txt
Paste the code, replace 0000000000000 with your publisher id
Click save changes
Fix Ads.txt error without plugin
Open Notepad File
Paste the above code into it
Replace the 00000000000 with your publisher id
Click on File and Save
Give it the name “Ads.txt”, Save it
Uploading ADS.TXT File to your root domain
Login in to your Cpanel
If you don’t have direct access, log in to your hosting account
Click on Cpanel
Click on File Manager
Check the root directory
upload to ads.txt file
Check your Ads.txt file with the following path.
yourdomain.com/ads.txt
If you see the text without errors then you are done. Comment below if you need help with it
