It's fascinating seeing people go "I miss the wild west era of the internet" and then learn they were born in 2003
Like fuck off. By the time you're 6 it was dead. The cutoff is around 06/7, and even that's debateable to have ended earlier
If we're being brutally honest-
1993-1998: True Wild West. Not much could happen due to limited tech, but it was completely unmonitored. I'm honestly surprised to find archives of old chats on Google
1998: The Coppa act is established, further taking effect in 2000. This made people aware that kids can access the internet. Teens barely gave a shit, though it made corporations more aware of them, and how to consider them for a market. It also unfortunately promoted age fraud to access barred login sites
1999-2005/6: User oriented era. This is when a lot of custom sites, blogs, and forums popped up, as well as many image hosting sites that are sadly defunct now. Google being a popular search engine further encouraged discovering these user made sites. Contrary to popular belief, user sites were mostly made and "moderated" by edgy kids and teens, so you WILL see the opinion of a 14yr old. Incidentally, due to domains being expensive, a lot of these teen made forums and personal sites died extremely fast, ignoring raids, doxxing, and flamewars
Video sharing while possible also was really crappy for quality...except for
User created flash games and anims enabled a massive spread of content. Newgrounds was a popular hosting spot. Shame Flash died
Outside that, we least we got bbphp as a solid forum template be popularized after many other ones died. For those less tech savvy, in 2003
We got social media. This was the main goto till smartphones and Twitter got popularized after 2006, and still was going strong until mid 2010s. Despite older netiquette of being encouraged to not post anything indentifiable about yourself, many users expressed themselves with music tastes and eventual personal blogs
2005/6: YouTube is released, as well as Dailymotion. Bootlegged Newgrounds anims popped up for uploads, but also shared tv show clips
Fun thing, before mid 2010s, users can only upload at max 15min of video
Similarly around 2005, Reddit similarly sparked up. More modern image hosting sites spurred around 2007/8
~~~
But regardless, the public internet already changed massively after 2000. Web 2.0 was already a term from 1999 that described the change, with it being redefined for it occuring around 2004. I think one thing not noticed, the development of this tech mostly happened in the UK, due to general smaller population and faster telocommunication services compared to the US at the time. This similar impacted the type of audience that used this
I see people longing for a freer internet, and I agree online corporate control is shitty. But the dretches of humanity has severely stunted user diversity and interest, same with over prioritizing skill over general good collaboration and behavior. The modern tech bro absolutely not giving a shit for the userbase or societal problems and being very selfish can unfortunately be traced here. Same for rsmpant political misinformation being unmoderated, and early 90s fandom woes still having a negative impact on some franchises
I see dumbass self censoring like "unalive" on sites, and it's not even enforced. It's just stupid assumption that advertisors care so much
Which brings the question, why are we trying to heavily get into monetizing expression? I genuinely feel Ytube enabling users to do so is exactly why user content got obnoxious after 2013 when it got popular. Unfortunately it's way too late to undo that. Many rely on the monetizing
Though I find it funny when people ignore just...making their own site to bypass the censorship. bbphp again is open source, and there are many other online web creation tools. I can't even say the rise of tech illiteracy is why, tech illiterate people aren't the ones complaining of sites crapping out
Anyway, if you miss pre algorithm search engines results leading to you finding random shit, try this;
Unfortunately the reducing of child safe sites is another convo
I received this message last night, but as I blocked the anon who sent it, I don't have the original ask. I didn't think that I was going to respond at all, but there are some lingering thoughts about it that I'd like to speak to.
I'm appalled by the assumption that I don't leave feedback on Ao3 or Wattpad. Of course I do. I leave comments on fics on every platform I consume them on. I am also imperfect - I don't have the time or energy to leave an effusive comment on every fic - but I leave a one sentence comment. I leave kudos. I let them know that I enjoyed.
I do consume free content on other sites without engaging with it. The difference is that on Youtube or TikTok, the content I'm consuming is compensated. My viewing of it feeds an algorithm that then promotes it to other users. My viewing of it allows the creators to become members of their respective platforms' creator fund. My viewing of it enables these creators to get sponsorship deals that can then literally pay for things. When I consume free content on other sites without interacting the creator is getting paid. Their labor is being compensated.
It is illegal to monetize fanfiction. To attempt to make money off of it would bring about lawsuits from the corporations that own the characters and universes we write about. It would destroy sites where fanfiction is hosted, as it has in the past. We attempt sometimes to get something in little ways, like a patreon or a ko-fi, but these operate as systems of donation because any other method of payment is illegal. (You can go to the ko-fi link in my bio and see that nobody has donated to it. I'm not asking anyone to.) So you see, my content isn't like other free content you access on the internet. The only way I get anything out of my work is through interaction.
Of course I write for myself. But do not be so naive as to believe that I post it on the internet for my own validation. I could very well write my pieces and keep them to myself, or only share them in a discord server of friends who I know will appreciate it. I post them online to share them with a wider fan community who also love the characters. I post them online to get feedback. Yes, I am deliberately baiting reactions. I am creating art; its purpose is to make people feel things, and I'd like to know if it's effective. I am no more entitled to feedback than you are to an endless stream of free content that you, admittedly, have the option of not engaging with. But to assert that I am somehow being greedy or obtuse speaks to your lack of understanding of how this works. Or perhaps it is indicative of your callous disregard for the art that you so readily consume.
Imagine a painter friend of yours shows you their new work that they are excited about. They present it to you, all excited and hopeful. You stare at the painting impassively. You don't smile, you don't react.
Your painter friend's face falls. "Do you like it?" they ask.
"You showed it to me for free," you reply. "I don't owe you anything."
No, reading my work is not a debt to be paid in forced reaction. I did not say that I was owed feedback, nor did I "demand" it. It is absurd to assume that this was my intention. It is equally absurd to act as though fan creators are benevolent art martyrs who should expect nothing in return for their work but the supposed satisfaction of a job well done. It is absurd to think that readers play no role, that this is not a symbiotic relationship between artist and art consumer.
If you do not want to accept responsibility in this relationship, that is your choice. You are right in that regard; I can not control your behavior. But do not expect me to continue on as though nothing is amiss. Do not act as though I should be grateful for every little scrap I am given and never speak up for myself. And do not tell me that I have no right to my feelings ever, but specifically in regards to the diminishing returns of the labor I am doing.
We are not here to die on the swords of your indifference in perpetuity. Press the fucking reblog button.
Are gaming communities becoming less about play and more about monetisation?
In an age where entertainment and technology are developing at a neck-breaking pace, gaming communities have seen a metamorphosis that goes beyond conventional play. What was once a large leisure activity has developed into a vibrant hub of entertainment and business, posing fascinating queries about how these digital communities are changing. The entire foundation of gaming communities finds itself at a crossroads as the industry observes the integration of monetization tactics, from in-game purchases to the thriving sphere of esports and content production. In exploring the changing dynamics, we dive further into the topic of whether these communities are becoming less about the pure joy of play and more about the complex web of commercialization that now permeates virtual worlds.
These days, microtransactions and on-game purchases are common in contemporary games, enabling users to purchase in-game cosmetics, virtual goods, or other upgrades. Both platform providers and game creators will benefit from these transactions. Older generations can now afford more expensive games on different digital distribution platforms and can afford to pay for in-game microtransactions or to support their favourite streamer or online celebrity, playing video games has become an increasingly important social activity for young people (Bankov 2019). Through the streamer, gamers would be more likely to purchase the in-game item due to how good it looks on the streamer’s interface so they get an idea of how it works. As an example, in a simple mobile game like, ‘Subway Surfers’, most of the characters require the user to spend the in-game currency to buy the characters. Most of the time people would not be pros at the game and would end up buying the in-game currency to buy the character. Even though it is a free game, players would spend extra money to purchase the extra things in the game.
There is a heated argument about how these trades affect what play is really about. While some contend that these transactions provide gamers a way to customize and enhance their gaming experience, others are worried that they might lead to an unfair playing field where those with larger wallets have a clear edge. The problem of commercialization in AAA games is one that both consumers and developers must consider equally as regardless of how well a game is designed, the financial influence that players believe they may have on creators supports the continued use of monetization strategies (Ahmadu 2023).
The growth of esports is another aspect of the trend toward commercialization. What started out as amicable buddy competitions has grown into a multibillion-dollar business. Esports competitions draw enormous viewership, and their financial appeal is bolstered by lucrative sponsorship and advertising partnerships. One topic that comes up is whether the competitive scene or gaming communities are more important to the spirit of play, or if money is the primary motivator. According to (Rauth 2023), esports are now so popular that they compete with regular sports for price money and viewership that professional gamers can compete in competitions for millions of dollars, or they can broadcast content on websites like Twitch. Similar to conventional professional sports, esports teams are valued at a total of $1 billion because of their owners, franchises, endorsement deals, cash rewards from tournament wins, and other factors (Shalabi, 2023).
For gaming communities, the emergence of game streaming websites like Twitch and YouTube has opened up new horizons. These days, gamers may create their content by sharing their gameplay experiences with hundreds, perhaps millions, of viewers. This phenomenon has elevated gaming to a new level of popularity among internet users, but it also begs the question of how monetization affects the process of creating original content. A major factor in opening up Esports to a worldwide audience has been the emergence of internet streaming services like Twitch and YouTube gaming (Sponsored Post, 2023). Most gamers earn a large sum of cash from competing in esports competitions while others would livestream their pro-gaming on media sites such as Twitch and YouTube.
It’s important to understand that there is a positive link between play and monetization even as gaming communities struggle with these changes. Many contend that revenue generation gives game creators the means to produce and support top-notch games. The money made may go towards further content development, enhancements, and upgrades, which will enhance their entire game experience. Finding the ideal mix is crucial. People run a risk of offending the same people who helped to make the game popular in the first place when you tilt the balance too much in favour of commercialization. It is a challenge for developers and the gaming community to carefully traverse this terrain while maintaining the primary focus of the enjoyment of play.
Unlocking YouTube Gold: How to Monetize Your Channel in Just One Month
Introduction
In the digital age, YouTube has become a powerhouse for content creators to share their passions and connect with millions of viewers worldwide. What's even more exciting is the potential to turn your YouTube channel into a lucrative source of income. In this blog, we'll dive deep into actionable strategies to help you monetize your YouTube channel within just one month. Buckle up and get ready to supercharge your YouTube journey!
Step 1: Find Your Niche
Every successful YouTube channel starts with a clear niche. Think of your channel as a specialized store that offers something unique and valuable to your target audience. To get started, ask yourself:
What are you passionate about?
What knowledge or skills do you possess?
Is there a demand for content related to your interests?
By answering these questions, you'll identify your niche and set the foundation for your channel's success.
Step 2: Create High-Quality Content
Quality is king on YouTube. To attract and retain viewers, focus on creating engaging and well-produced content. Here's how:
Invest in a Good Camera and Microphone: High-quality visuals and audio are essential for viewer retention.
Plan Your Content: Outline your videos, so they have a clear structure and purpose.
Engage with Your Audience: Respond to comments and build a community around your channel.
Step 3: Optimize for Search
YouTube is the second-largest search engine in the world, so you need to optimize your videos for search. Here's how:
Keyword Research: Use tools like Google Keyword Planner or TubeBuddy to find relevant keywords for your niche.
Optimize Titles and Descriptions: Incorporate your target keywords naturally into your video titles and descriptions.
Eye-catching Thumbnails: Create visually appealing thumbnails that grab viewers' attention.
Step 4: Consistency is Key
To build an audience and monetize your channel quickly, consistency is crucial. Stick to a regular posting schedule, whether it's once a week or more frequently. This helps your viewers know when to expect new content from you, keeping them engaged and coming back for more.
Step 5: Promote Your Channel
Don't rely solely on YouTube's algorithm to promote your content. Take charge of your channel's growth by promoting it through other channels:
Social Media: Share your videos on platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
Collaborations: Partner with other YouTubers in your niche for cross-promotion.
Online Communities: Engage in forums and online communities related to your niche, and subtly promote your channel when appropriate.
Step 6: Enable Monetization
Now that you've laid the groundwork for your channel's success, it's time to start making money. To enable monetization, you'll need to meet YouTube's eligibility requirements:
1,000 Subscribers: You must have at least 1,000 subscribers.
4,000 Watch Hours: Your channel must have accumulated 4,000 watch hours in the past 12 months.
AdSense Account: Set up an AdSense account to receive payments.
Once you meet these requirements, you can enable monetization and start earning money from ads, channel memberships, merchandise shelf, and more.
Step 7: Diversify Your Income Streams
While ad revenue is a primary source of income for many YouTubers, don't limit yourself to it. Explore other income streams:
Affiliate Marketing: Promote products or services related to your niche and earn commissions on sales.
Sponsorships: Collaborate with brands for sponsored content.
Merchandise: Create and sell your own merchandise to your loyal audience.
Conclusion
Monetizing your YouTube channel within one month is achievable with the right strategies and dedication. Remember that building a successful channel is a journey, but by finding your niche, creating quality content, optimizing for search, and promoting your channel, you can accelerate your path to financial success. So, start today, and watch your YouTube dreams turn into a profitable reality! Happy YouTubing!
Discover how to grow your audience and increase earnings in 2024. Start your journey now by watching Make Money with Gaming Videos and learn to turn passion into profit.
1. Join the YouTube Partner Program (YPP)
To start earning from your gaming clips, the first step is to join the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). To be eligible for YPP, you'll need at least 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours over the past year. Once you're in, you can earn revenue from ads displayed on your videos, including pre-roll ads, mid-roll ads, and banner ads.
Pro Tip: Focus on creating high-quality, engaging clips that are likely to attract viewers and encourage them to watch for longer durations. The more time viewers spend on your videos, the more you’ll earn from ad revenue.
2. Use YouTube Shorts for Quick Monetization
In 2024, YouTube Shorts has become a popular way to engage audiences with short, vertical videos. If you have exciting gaming clips, turning them into Shorts is an excellent way to boost your reach. YouTube has a dedicated Shorts Fund, and you can also earn money by including ads on your Shorts if you meet the eligibility criteria.
Pro Tip: Capture epic moments, funny fails, or highlights of intense gameplay to create viral Shorts. The quick, digestible nature of Shorts makes them perfect for gaming highlights.
3. Leverage Super Chats and Channel Memberships for Live Streams
Live streaming is a fantastic way to engage with your audience and earn money in real-time. When you stream on YouTube, viewers can send Super Chats to support you, and you can also enable channel memberships for recurring revenue. These features are especially lucrative during gameplay sessions, where fans are highly engaged with your content.
Pro Tip: During live streams, take the time to acknowledge Super Chats and thank your supporters. Viewers are more likely to donate when they feel seen and appreciated.
4. Monetize Through Sponsored Content
Sponsorships are one of the most lucrative ways to earn money with gaming clips. Game developers, accessory manufacturers, and gaming tech companies are always looking for influencers to promote their products. If you regularly post high-quality, popular gaming highlights, brands may approach you to sponsor your videos.
Pro Tip: Look for sponsorships that align with your gaming niche, whether it’s a specific game, genre, or gaming accessory. Integrate the sponsor naturally into your content to maintain authenticity.
5. Affiliate Marketing for Gaming Products
Affiliate marketing allows you to earn commissions by promoting gaming products or services in your videos. For example, you could promote a new game, gaming chair, or gaming accessories in your video description, earning a commission for every sale made through your affiliate link. Popular affiliate programs for gamers include Amazon Associates, Best Buy, and specialized gaming platforms like G2A.
Pro Tip: Create gaming highlight videos that feature a product you are promoting (such as a new controller or headset), and include your affiliate links in the video description.
6. Sell Your Own Gaming Merchandise
If you’ve built a dedicated following, selling your own branded merchandise can be a highly profitable way to monetize your gaming clips. Platforms like Teespring, Spreadshirt, and Merch by Amazon make it easy to design and sell merchandise such as t-shirts, hoodies, and mugs with your logo, catchphrases, or gaming-inspired designs.
Pro Tip: Use your gaming highlights as a way to promote your merchandise. For example, you could wear your branded t-shirt during gameplay or include a merchandise plug in the video.
7. Crowdfunding via Patreon or Ko-fi
Crowdfunding platforms like Patreon and Ko-fi allow your fans to support you directly in exchange for exclusive content or perks. You can offer special highlights, behind-the-scenes footage, or early access to your videos for subscribers who pledge a certain amount each month.
Pro Tip: Offer tiered rewards on Patreon, with higher tiers getting access to unique gaming clips or personalized shoutouts in your videos. The more value you provide, the more your fans will want to support you.
8. Cross-Promote Your Videos on Social Media
To increase your viewership and monetization potential, cross-promote your gaming clips and highlights on social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok. By sharing your content on multiple platforms, you’ll drive more traffic to your YouTube channel, resulting in more views and higher earnings.
Pro Tip: Use hashtags like #gamingclips or #gaminghighlights to increase the discoverability of your content on social media. Engaging with your community on these platforms can also help you build a loyal following.
9. Focus on Game-Specific Highlights
Another way to boost earnings from gaming clips is to focus on specific games that are trending or have large fan bases. Creating content around popular games like Fortnite, Call of Duty, Minecraft, or Apex Legends can attract more viewers, as fans are always searching for gameplay highlights, tutorials, and tips for these games.
Pro Tip: Pay attention to the gaming community and trending topics within specific games. Create highlight videos that focus on trending events or gameplay challenges to capture viewers’ attention.
10. Collaborate with Other Gamers
Collaborating with other YouTubers in the gaming community can help increase your exposure and drive more views to your gaming clips. By partnering with other gamers for joint highlight videos, you’ll tap into their fanbase and potentially gain new subscribers and viewers.
Pro Tip: Look for collaborations with YouTubers who share a similar style and gaming interests. Work together to create gaming challenges, tournaments, or joint highlight reels that will attract a broader audience.
11. Create Compelling Thumbnails and Titles
The success of your gaming clips depends largely on how appealing your thumbnails and video titles are. Creating eye-catching thumbnails and using compelling titles will help your videos stand out in search results and attract more clicks. Make sure your thumbnails are high-quality and reflect the excitement of your gaming highlights.
Pro Tip: Use bright, contrasting colors, and close-up action shots from your gaming clips to make your thumbnails pop. Craft titles that create curiosity, such as “Epic Kill Montage” or “Insane Victory Highlight.”
Conclusion
With the right strategies, earning money from gaming clips on YouTube in 2024 is a realistic and achievable goal. By joining the YouTube Partner Program, using live streaming features, promoting affiliate products, and collaborating with others, you can create a steady stream of income from your gaming highlights. Focus on creating engaging, high-quality content, and diversify your monetization methods to maximize your earnings. With dedication, consistency, and creativity, you’ll be well on your way to turning your gaming passion into a profitable venture.
The Power of Gaming Communities: Lessons from Độ Mixi’s VTV Controversy
In today’s digital age, gaming communities and social gaming are thriving like never before. With platforms like Twitch and YouTube, live streaming has become a primary mode of entertainment and interaction for millions globally, blending gameplay with real-time engagement (Johnson, M.R., 2018). However, as seen with popular Vietnamese streamer Độ Mixi, controversies can emerge when gaming culture intersects with mainstream media, raising questions about influence, censorship, and community values.
youtube
Gaming communities are built around shared interests, where players connect, compete, and support each other. Such communities go beyond casual gaming, cultivating a sense of belonging and identity (Hamilton, W., 2014). For streamers, these communities are their foundation, enabling them to monetize their influence through views, subscriptions, and donations.
Social gaming and live streaming have transformed online entertainment, allowing gamers to interact directly with viewers. This interactivity fosters a unique, real-time relationship between streamers and fans. However, with this power comes responsibility. Độ Mixi’s condemnation by Vietnam Television (VTV) 4 years ago serves as a notable example. His criticism by VTV highlights the tensions between traditional media and gaming culture, as he was accused of promoting “inappropriate” behavior to a young audience. This incident reveals how societal norms impact the perceived role of streamers as influencers.
Academic research underscores that as live streaming grows, it faces unique challenges, including content regulation and social accountability (Johnson, M.R., 2017). In Độ Mixi’s case, the controversy signals the need for clearer guidelines to bridge gaps between conventional media expectations and the evolving gaming world.
Độ Mixi’s story is a reminder that gaming, though recreational, is powerful in shaping opinions and influencing youth. For gamers, creators, and audiences, understanding this power is crucial as online communities continue to reshape entertainment.
Spreading the word since Internet platform continue to do exactly nothing to protect artists and in fact actively enable art theft.
Funny how YouTube will happily nuke entire channels if they detect 0.5 seconds of copyrighted material used legally yet sees nothing wrong with people stealing and monetizing indepdendant artists' entire works.
And OF COURSE this guy has to somehow tie it to AI. Of course. At this point, I'm shocked when a grift doesn't mention AI in some fashion.
Might as well post this here for posterity, since Youtube has yet to resolve the matter.
A couple of weeks ago, my short film 'Pleasant Inn' got a false copyright strike from an individual named Kazi Zidane Mim. He has been striking any Youtube channel that reacted to my short film in the hopes of uploading his own stolen version titled 'Paradise Hell.'
For comparisons, here is my original short film:
[This is a horror animation and contains flashing lights, so viewer discretion is advised]
vimeo
And here is Kazi Zidane's stolen version:
Kazi Zidane Mim has a history of just flat out stealing.
As an example, this is his 'Bloody Mary graphic novel,' which is actually a manga called 'Ibitsu,' with only the text/dialogue changed.
He's literally just selling this on Google Books and Amazon without any push-back.
I also found out that he has a Sketchfab account.
Why is this important? Because Sketchfab offers a great library of 3D models made by other artists, such as this animated deer by Games in Motion Studios;
Look familiar?
I'm sure coincidences are possible, tho 🦌
Kazi Zidane even made a bogus IMDB page of my stolen short.
And to add insult to injury...
So far, Youtube hasn't done anything about this and I'm tired of waiting. Many channels have received false copyright strikes by Kazi Zidane Mim just for reacting to 'Pleasant Inn' since 2019.
Yet, getting started with YouTube monetization requires understanding its policies, meeting eligibility criteria, and knowing the strategies that turn views into revenue.
This comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know about YouTube monetization, from eligibility requirements to revenue streams and frequently asked questions. If you’re ready to take the leap into the world of monetized content creation, read on for all the details.
What Is YouTube Monetization and Why Is It Valuable? YouTube monetization allows creators to earn money from their content through ads, subscriptions, and other income streams. By enabling monetization, creators can profit from ads that appear on their videos, revenue-sharing programs, and additional options like channel memberships or merchandise sales. Monetizing on YouTube is an excellent way to turn your passion into profit, whether through educational content, vlogs, tutorials, or entertainment.
Essential YouTube Monetization Requirements To be eligible for YouTube monetization, creators must meet specific criteria and apply for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). Here’s a quick breakdown of the requirements:
1,000 Subscribers Your channel must have at least 1,000 subscribers. This number indicates that there is a consistent audience that values your content.
4,000 Hours of Watch Time You must accumulate a total of 4,000 public watch hours over the past 12 months. This measure ensures that creators are producing content that engages viewers consistently.
Adherence to YouTube’s Policies YouTube has strict community guidelines and copyright policies that all creators must follow. Content that violates these policies is ineligible for monetization.
Linked Google AdSense Account To receive earnings, you need a linked Google AdSense account, which will handle all payments. Setting up AdSense is easy, and linking it to your YouTube account enables direct deposits of your earnings.
