Should I have to Outsource my Web Development project?
Web development involves building a web presence in desirable formats such as a website or a web app. For this, you need to hire a freelancer, a well-established company, or an agency to do the work.
A report by Aptude on the global outsourcing market indicates that businesses are outsourcing approximately 68% of their workforce requirements, currently with approximately 300,000 positions, accounting for approximately $85.6 billion in the global market.
Let’s dive straight into the points.
Should I hire a Dedicated Team or a well-established Company/Agency?
Most of the time, outsourcing is a great idea. It’s much more cost-effective as you don’t pay for hiring/on-boarding/office etc, have a pool of specialists ready to help you and their expertise in the required domain and probably with startups in general.
As per the model, it depends on what team you already have. If you have a tech team, consider staffing them with devs and you’re good to go. If your team is more business-related, consider outsourcing full web development.
You don’t need to hire a full-time freelancer if you have no idea how to interview and find great developers. So, finding an established company/agency is likely your route of lowest risk.
Good luck!

Backend Developers — These are skilled professionals who oversee the show from behind the stage. They form the core features and segments of the program that manage the user experience on a digital platform. Some of the key skills you need to test include knowledge of Python, Java, PHP, SQL, HTML, .NET, Node JS, and others.
Frontend Developers — These are skilled professionals who are responsible for the design and implementation of the parts of the web app that are visited by the users. In other words, they are the design developers handling the appearance of the website. They provide technical skills to improve website speed, resolve technical issues, and integrate third-party services into the site’s infrastructure. His knowledge of React JS, Angular JS, Vue JS, HTML5, Javascript, and others enables him to achieve the prescribed functionalities of the website.
Full-stack Developers — These professionals are competent and experienced in both areas of web development. They take care of coding as well as designing the web page or application. Such specialists gain popularity among companies that have just entered the market because such start-ups have very limited resources. The hourly fee will be higher for hiring a full-stack developer. However, working with such a specialist tends to be cheaper.

Jessa, please give me some advice. I get that adulting is just winging it but I've been unable to get hired for anything for the past two years. I've applied for everything, from stuff that I'm perfect for to stuff I'm way above. I'm existing on savings and food stamps and I'm losing my mind. Any advice on how to get out of this hellish slump?
I’m so sorry you’re going through such a trying time. Unemployment can be hard, especially when you feel you’re being passed over not only for positions you qualify for, but also those you’re over qualified for. First, make sure the jobs you are applying for really are within your scope. Did the job description ask for 5 years experience but you only have 3? Unless you can verify that you were a rockstar in those three years, you aren’t technically qualified for the position even if you really feel that you are.Does the position require a specific degree but you only have something similar? Unfortunately, “close enough” doesn’t cut it as often as we’d like.
Or maybe you really do fit all the minimum requirements for a position. But how does your job history look? Does it make you seem like a flight risk who hops around from position to position every few years or, God forbid, every few months? Unless you’re fresh out of college, prospective employers aren’t likely to be forgiving of such behavior.
Take a long, hard, honest look at your resume. Are there any glaring deficiencies or red flags you can fix or mitigate? And if all else fails, you can always try a staffing agency. I have friends who found really decent jobs that way. But just keep in mind that staffing agencies are much more likely to place you in an acceptable position if you are already located in an area with a strong work market. Even then, companies that utilize staffing agencies are increasingly more likely to keep you contracted indefinitely rather than hire you on full-time. If you can live without benefits like vacation and health insurance, this may not be a problem. Either way, stay positive and KEEP YOUR HEAD UP.In the mean time, consider volunteering somewhere if you have the spare time on your hands anyway. That’s often the foot in the door to a paying position. Once people get to know you and your work ethic, you’re likely to cruise into a salary. I know that’s how a few people at my job were ultimately hired.
Don’t forget the importance of networking. Far too often, it’s not what you don’t know that’s holding you back, but WHO you don’t know that’s holding you back.
(And as a final note, I don’t know your situation, but if you’re in the position to be able to move back home or within a support system for a little while in order to save or get back on your feet, there’s no shame in that, too. I know a lot of people who would rather suffer until the very end before asking for help, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do if you hit a rough patch).
Good luck and I really hope you find something soon. Keep me updated.

The Chase Files Daily Newscap 24/10/2019
Good Morning #realdreamchasers. Here is your daily news cap for Thursday, October 24th, 2019. There is a lot to read and digest so take your time. Remember you can read full articles via Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS), Barbados Today (BT), or by purchasing a Daily Nation Newspaper (DN).
QEH MONEY PROBE – An investigation has been launched to discover where millions of dollars belonging to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) have ended up. This was revealed by Leader of Government Business Senator Jerome Walcott, who told the Senate yesterday the last qualified audit of the hospital was done in 2011 and there was currently “an additional $7.1 million that cannot be explained in terms of where it has gone; what it has purchased; who it has paid”. He also highlighted a situation where there was a gap of $13.1 million between an actual stock count and a matching book value of inventory that has to be written off. These were among several troubling issues at the main health care institution voiced by Walcott while leading off debate on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Amendment) Bill, 2019, which is intended to institute a new management structure at the institution. (DN)
NAKED NEPOTISM – Three senators have blasted the Mia Mottley-led administration for the proposed changes to the structure at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH). During the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Amendment) Bill 2019 debate in the upper house today, senators Caswell Franklyn, Toni Moore and Crystal Drakes questioned the changes that will see a number of major appointments including that of an executive chairman. Last week in the House of Assembly, Minister of Health Jeffrey Bostic announced that Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland was appointed executive chairman of the QEH. The two trade unionists and the Opposition Senator were highly critical of that particular post above all the others. Franklyn, head of the Unity Workers’ Union, lambasted the Government for what he described as a “shameful” act. “It seems as though this Government has no shame. How can you sit on a board and come up with these grand ideas for yourself? It looks bad. It is shameful that Government continues to find jobs for its friends, family and party hacks. And for what purpose? Not for the benefit of the organisation that they are staffing but to give jobs to their friends. This nonsense has to stop. The opposition senator continued: “You did not form a Government Employment Agency but that seems to be what is happening. If that is what you are about put it in your manifesto and say so we will get you jobs. Every person who campaigned for the Barbados Labour Party now getting a consultancy or getting some high profile job…. and a lot of things they can’t handle…” A passionate Franklyn said what made the appointment look so egregious was the fact that it was the spouse of a sitting Government minister. “She is the wife of the Government minister, it looks bad. You can’t just jump in and start taking the Government positions. It is wrong. The people you used on the call-in programmes to harass the last administration they have now become consultants. You are talking about the money you are putting in to the hospital but a lot of it going into unnecessary salaries…” Meanwhile, general secretary of the Barbados Worker’s Union Toni Moore said there were too many unanswered questions and that some aspects of the legislation did not sit well with her. “I would not deny that I have serious reservations around the discussion of the appointment of an executive chairman. When we hear that an executive chairperson is going to be appointed by the Cabinet, but that executive chairperson is going to be an employee of the QEH it leaves those of us – even those of us that have had as few years as I have had in industrial relations – wondering where is the transparency and is that going to impact when one is potentially governing oneself.” Moore said the proposed changes also had serious implications for industrial relations at the QEH. The senator also said that the appointment raised the question of transparency. “Wearing another hat I wonder what implications it has for industrial relations and interactions. The executive chairman under the provisions that have been set out can potentially be a person that ends up being a power unto himself, herself and the Cabinet of Barbados. It raises too many issues around transparency and when issues are raised around transparency questions of trust and intent come into the fore. “An act should not be amended to address current day players because when changes are made to address A and B today how can we be sure that even where there is doubt and things work out for person A and B that when person C and D comes tomorrow that it will have the same effect… “If a person is appointed by a Cabinet and Government changes hands, does it mean that the next Cabinet is responsible for appointing a person? What happens when Government changes? Is this position tied to a term of Government?,” a puzzled Moore asked. The other Opposition senator Drakes warned Government that any appearance of wrongdoing could be costly to them in the long run. “The Barbadian public was at the mercy of what was considered extremely poor management. I want to warn this Government anything that you do that can be perceived as having any untoward intent, it may even vaguely look like corruption, it may vaguely look like favouritism, it may vaguely look like nepotism it will be at their own detriment….” Drakes reminded Government that while in Opposition they were the ones who made corruption a campaign issue and they were the ones who brought new legislation to Parliament in order to weed out perceived corruption. “We have to make sure that transparency and accountability is the order of the day. In the last election that was one of the key things this current administration from St Lucy to Christ Church they touted it because of the perceived mismanagement by the former administration. It was so important to this administration that they quickly tabled the Integrity In Public Life Bill which is still a Bill…,” she said. The senator questioned the “new hiring practice” and cautioned Government that the proposed changes to the QEH is a step in the wrong direction. “The executive chairman can only be dismissed from the post based on the approval of the Minister. Is that the commonplace hiring practice of a staff member of a statutory corporation? I am not satisfied that we are doing this the right way. I am asking if this process is transparent, is it fair and does it adhere to good governance principles? This legislation muddies the waters. You are facilitating an abuse of power. I am not satisfied with the justification for these changes. It is a step in the wrong direction….” (BT) ‘
FAMILY PLANNING BOOST – A United Nations agency will be pushing the work of the Barbados Family Planning Association (BFPA) during a major population summit in Nairobi, Kenya next month. Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Dr Natalia Kanem, who was recently in Barbados for consultations with Government officials, the BFPA and a number of young female entrepreneurs, lauded the social work being done among girls and women here. And she has pledged to “noise it abroad” when she attends the global leaders’ conference which will discuss a previously unfulfilled pledge by heads to end gender-based violence and the idea that women and girls must be at the centre of any strategy to improve the world and reach the various sustainable development goals. “We also are very pleased that the Population Commission in Barbados is going to be looking at the policy issues which we feel are part of the success stories of the girls I have met here. They are making jobs for themselves. They are getting the vocational training the BFPA provides,” Dr Kanem said in an interview at UN House, Hastings, Christ Church. “These are the types of positive things…when I go to Nairobi next month I want to make sure the world knows what’s happening in Barbados,” she added. The UNFPA Executive Director also praised Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley for her leadership here and on the world stage, describing Mottley as an icon, referring to her recent speeches at the UN General Assembly. While commending the country for the socio-economic progress it is making, Dr Kanem believes much more can be done. “I see a lot of opportunity to accelerate the progress…all of us working together as the United Nations to make sure none of us is left behind. When I think of the sustainable development goals, they belong to young people of this country, of this region, really, all around the world,” she said. The UN official noted that those goals must occur in a climate of peace and of human rights. She contended that the goals do not reside on paper, but in small communities across Barbados where all are equal. (BT)
UNANSWERED QUESTIONS – Leader of Government Business in the Senate Senator Jerome Walcott has expressed concern about financial improprieties at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, although the establishment of a board of directors in 2005 was expected to alleviate some of those issues. Speaking at the introduction of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Amendment Bill 2019into the Upper House, Senator Walcott said: “The hospital was given $129 million in this year’s Estimates, and the levy we established for the QEH through NIS managed to raise $39 million between January and August this year. It has also received assistance from a number of philanthropic organisations such as the Rotary clubs, the Sandy Lane Charitable Trust and Rihanna’s Clara and Lionel Foundation, and another $10 million was allocated in June to upgrade the Accident and Emergency department.” Despite all this, Walcott added, there have been significant discrepancies in the QEH’s books. “You have a situation where there is a lot of work to be done in terms of managing finances. For example, there was a gap of $13.1 million between an actual stock count and the matching book value of inventory, an amount that has to be written off. A significant difference between what you have and what you say you have. The last qualified audit is 2011, and currently there is an additional $7.1 million that no one can explain where it has gone, what it has purchased, or who it has paid. This is being investigated.” He also spoke of the sudden disappearance and ultimately resignations of some of the senior officials of the hospital, including former CEO Dr. Dexter James, following the Estimates debate. “All I can say about the past CEO is that he was invited and indeed participated in the Estimates debate on the Friday, he was questioned on the Friday evening, he did not come back the Monday because he was ill, then he proceeded on sick leave for some substantial time after that and subsequently he resigned and the matter has been settled.” He added: “The procurement manager was at the Estimates on the Friday, resigned on the Monday, and the Director of Finance resigned a couple of weeks ago. When the auditors were doing the audit the person called in sick a week after the individual resigned. Clearly all was not well in finance and procurement in the QEH and this has to be addressed, and the changes will address this.” In terms of the nurses, one of the problems related to the fact that there was a high failure rate when it came to the regional nursing qualification, which all nurses working in the CARICOM region needed in order to become registered nurses.“When we first set up the board, we were bringing on 30 nurses who had completed the Barbados Community College programme each year, and the failure rate for the regional qualifying exam was 60 per cent. That meant only 10 or 12 nurses would pass the regional exam, so they would come on as registered nurses while the others would be nursing assistants. So we increased the intake of graduates from 30 to 100 taking into consideration the failure rate, and the fact that nurses would migrate.” Senator Walcott noted that the Ministry of Health had entered discussions with the Ministry of Education to address the high failure rate when it came to the regional qualifying examination, and said the decision to change the managerial structure of the hospital came about after “the board was given 16 months to review its systems, have its retreats, and come to grips with some of the major issues the hospital was facing.” Senator Walcott, who formerly worked at the QEH in several capacities as a medical doctor and was the Minister of Health when the decision was made to change the management structure of the QEH in 2005, expressed disappointment that the institution was facing the same problems it faced in those days, and in some cases things had grown worse. (BT)
CALL MADE TO HELP QEH – Corporate Barbados is being encouraged to give more support to the island’s lone public hospital as officials there continue to work towards improving service and meeting the demands of the public. This appeal came from Director of Regulatory Affairs at CIBC Firs tCaribbean International Bank Joannie Worrell, as she made a donation to the health institution during the opening ceremony for the fifth Infectious Disease Week at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) office in Barbados on Monday. “We encourage other corporate entities to give in a similar fashion to our hospital,” said Worrell. “Indeed, this donation is not the end for us as my team has committed to giving of our time to the children’s ward at the QEH and they will be hearing from us very shortly,” she said. Through a partnership with equipment suppliers Servall Inc, the financial institution donated three cordless electrostatic sprayers and a supply of tablets to the hospital’s infection control unit. Worrell said it was an easy choice for the bank to make the donation to the QEH through the bank’s Adopt-A-Cause programme. “Servall, having being informed of our intention, willingly agreed to collaborate with us and matched our contribution. This positioned us to do more and make the contribution more meaningful,” said Worrell. “The effectiveness of the work of infection control professionals has a direct relationship on overall staff and patient wellbeing and we are happy to contribute to your efforts,” she said. The next generation cordless disinfection systems will be used to sanitize and disinfect all touch points in a room after a patient is discharged and prior to a new one entering. (BT)
300 0N DIALYSIS – Kidney disease has now been described as an epidemic in Barbados, but plans are afoot to address the situation. Consultant nephrologist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), Nerissa Jurawan, said she was deeply concerned there were about 300 patients on dialysis treatment between two and three times per week at the Martindale’s Road, St Michael facility. She revealed that people as young as 25 years old were on dialysis. “For the size of the population, 300 patients is a lot,” she told the Daily Nation, shortly after the QEH Kidney Unit accepted a donation from the British Women’s Club of Barbados of two i-STAT Creatinine test machines designed to enable early detection of kidney disease. (DN)
282 JUSTICE OF THE PEACES SWORN IN – Justices of the Peace (JPs) will have a significant role to play as Barbados continues to rebuild its communities. Both Prime Minister Mia Mottley and Attorney General Dale Marshall reminded them of this fact as an unprecedented 282 men and women of all ages and backgrounds hailing from communities all over Barbados took their oaths of office at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre this evening. Prime Minister Mottley described the position of Justice of the Peace as “a noble tradition, where people who are held in high esteem by their peers within their communities have a role to play in maintaining law and social stability.” She noted that the selection process was an arduous one, and some of their responsibilities included signing search warrants, signing of documents and photographs for those applying for passports or citizenship, among other things. The Prime Minister also said: “Peace, stability and prosperity begins in the community, so we must look at strengthening the institutions that help to build this. Our legal framework was premised on an adversarial basis, wherein we look for victory from the party that best articulates their case, but JPs can help us as we look towards alternative dispute resolution methods on the community level.” Attorney General Dale Marshall said there was no statute governing the appointment of JPs, but it was done by “exercising royal prerogative”, and he reminded them that they were not expected to charge money for the services they provide to the people they serve. He urged them: “You have to become the centrepiece of your community and we urge you to join us as we rebuild this country.” Justices of the Peace were first appointed in England in the eleventh century, where they were described as “Men appointed to guard the peace of the King”, and they have served in many different judicial capacities over the centuries. (BT)
CADDLE: REEVALUATION OF WOMEN’S WORK NECESSARY – Minister in the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Marsha Caddle says there needs to be a rethink of the value of jobs towards which women currently gravitate. She contended that the traditional yardstick for valuing these roles are out of whack with the current reality and this has led to economic disparities between the sexes, even though more women graduate from institutions of higher learning. The minister made the remarks during the launch of a report by UN Women, which was held at UN House, this morning. The report entitled, Status of Women and Men Report: A Gender Analysis of Labour Force Data and Policy Frameworks in Six CARICOM Member States, provided insight into progress made with regards to achieving gender equality in the world of work. The minister said that while in Barbados women are close to parity with men when it comes to wages for performing the same duties, society does not ascribe high value to a number of the critical jobs in female-dominated fields. “Men tend to occupy positions where they operate heavy equipment and machinery while women tend to be in service and care work in the informal and formal economy. This fact is mirrored across all sectors of the economy. This is in part one of the reasons for the disparity in women’s income because we know that these professions where women tend to be focused, somehow tend to attract a lower level of wages,” said Caddle. She added, “The conversation for equal pay for equal work of equal value is very important. Those last three words [of equal value] are important because it is about how we value the work that is done in our communities and in our economies.” Caddle argued that the care industry, both formal and informal, remains one of the roles which is grossly undervalued, even though its existence facilitates all other jobs. “Care work has to be seen as more valuable than it currently is. It has to be remunerated practically. This field is responsible for the population of entire civilizations and entire workforces. We know the value of unpaid care work; we know the value of care work in the formal and informal sector and it is time that the remuneration of the work reflects that value,” Caddle stressed. She revealed that to this end, Government was seeking to change the work culture in order to have more flexible work environments, such as, working from home, creating spaces for children at the office and childcare facilities at industrial complexes. “We are promoting breastfeeding and feed management arrangements in the workplace. This is just one of the areas of flexibility that we are working with and is required. Breastfeeding must not be seen as one of those things that must only be done at home because the rearing of entire generations of people certainly cannot be a private matter. We have to open up the workspace to be able to account for and allow for all of these arrangements,” Caddle explained. (BT)
BARBADOS CLOSING WORKPLACE GENDER GAP – Barbados has been recognised as one of the Caribbean countries leading the charge in closing the gender gap in the workplace, which has fueled the equal pay for equal work discord. This is according to a just released report by UN Women, entitled, Status of Women and Men Report: A Gender Analysis of Labour Force Data and Policy Frameworks in Six CARICOM Member States. In the summary of the report delivered by Deputy Representative of the UN Women Multi-Country Office, Tonni Brodber, it was noted that despite significant investments in education, structural barriers to gender equality and women’s empowerment persist in the labour market. The report provides a gender analysis of the labour force in six CARICOM Member States, Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago. However, Brodber revealed that Barbados and Jamaica were the two countries where the hourly rate for women is almost at the same level as their male counterparts. She also revealed that 49 per cent of the managers in the Barbadian workforce are women. “Barbadian women earn on average 95.4 per cent of what Barbadian men earn. But when controlling for education, Barbados women who are educated up to the primary level earn four dollars less than their male counterparts; those who are educated up to the secondary school level earn $1.67 less; and 63 cents less than men if they are educated up to the university level. Women comprise 49 per cent of managers in Barbados,” Brodber revealed. Barbados has also bettered the international averages when it comes to closing the gap between men and women finding employment after completing their university degrees. It was revealed that globally 41.5 per cent of women with a university degree are outside of the labour force or unemployed, but only 17.2 per cent of men are in this situation. In Barbados, 38 per cent of women are educated up to the tertiary level compared to 31 per cent of men. But the employment rate for Barbadian women, based on 2017 data, is 55 per cent compared to 63 per cent for men. In the report, the island was praised for its initiatives in subsidizing nursery care, as unpaid care work was still one of the factors which kept women out of the workforce. In addition, it was revealed that Barbados was among a handful of countries, which have implemented sexual harassment legislation, an area which has also been identified as a major hindrance to women in the labour force. “Globally, several research studies have confirmed that unpaid care work was the main reason women were outside the labour force. Universal access to day care from birth to three years old is therefore vital. Barbados, with its subsidised nursery programme, has and can continue to lead the way in reaching universal access to this key service,” Brodber pointed out.” She added, “Data on the prevalence of sexual harassment in Barbados is not available. However, sexual harassment and violence do hinder women’s employment prospects and their productivity while at work. Barbados is one of a handful of CARICOM countries with sexual harassment legislation. More robust enforcement of this legislation can create a more enabling environment for women in the world of work.” However, it was made clear that Government could not rest on its laurels, as there was much more work still to be done, if total gender equality is to be realized within the workplace. Among the key recommendations coming out of the report were for the establishment of an ‘equal pay for work of equal value legislation’; the alleviation of the burden of unpaid work in the home through policies that enable women to reconcile paid and unpaid care responsibilities; improvement of access to quality, affordable childcare facilities; improvement of access to productive resources and an investigation of what can be done to expand entrepreneurial opportunities.” (BT)
MINISTER SILENT ON ATTACK AGAINST WORKER – Minister of Home Affairs Edmund Hinkson is remaining mum regarding yesterday’s alleged attack on a female worker of the state-owned correctional institution for juveniles at Barrows, St Lucy. Police are currently investigating the alleged assault against the employee of the Government Industrial School (GIS) by a 13-year-old inmate in which the worker claimed that she was “cuffed” at the back of her head. However, Hinkson, whose ministry is responsible for that institution told Barbados TODAY this morning it would be improper for him to comment now that it is a police matter. “It would be improper for me to do so when the matter is under investigation,” he said. Police confirmed to Barbados TODAY yesterday evening that they received the report from an employee of the alleged assault on the staff member at around 9:50 in the morning. It was revealed that the employee was temporarily stunned by a blow and sought medical attention at a private doctor soon after speaking with the police. But while declining to speak on yesterday’s incident, Minister Hinkson referred Barbados TODAY to pending Child Justice legislation, which among other things, will give magistrates a significantly wider discretion to impose community-based, restorative justice or correctional supervision sentences rather than confinement to the GIS. He explained that the Child Justice Bill, which he expects Parliament to debate by April next year, would most probably, with some amendments, fundamentally change the manner in which matters that go before the Magistrates’ Court involving an accused child will be dealt with. “Emphasis will be on diversion in order to enable the court to remove the case from formal judicial proceedings and to consequently be able to adopt informal procedures for punishment and rehabilitation of the child,” Hinkson said. He said there would also be a greater and earlier involvement of probation officers than is presently the case, and Magistrates would be liberally empowered to halt the initial inquiry into a criminal offence in order to deal with the child’s care and protection. He noted that because of the “revolutionary alteration of the present system,” detailed consideration is required on how best to implement and operationalize the Bill. “As such, a sub-committee of the Cabinet was formed to make recommendations on this area to the Cabinet. UNICEF is also providing its expert advice in this regard, free of costs to the Government, Hinkson stated. He pointed out that the number of girls and boys confined to the correctional facility has fallen from between 50-60 when he became minister almost 17 months ago to 31 now, comprising 16 girls and 15 boys. “Furthermore, as authorized by legislation, I recently gave early release to eight juveniles who had been sentenced to the institution for offences such as refractory behaviour, wandering, breach of probation and assault and who had already been confined for over 21 months in each case after being sentenced to three-year terms in some cases or until their 18th birthday in others,” he announced. “This has provided one of them with the opportunity to return to secondary school while two or three of them have been provided with employment opportunities. I will personally intercede on behalf of the others to have them placed in the near future in the Youth Advance Corps programme initiated last month by the Government,” the Cabinet Minister said. NOT GUILTY – “Just stay out of trouble!” Attorney-at-law Arthur Holder gave that advice to his client Anderson Busby, moments after he walked out of the Supreme Court a free man after beating a manslaughter case today. At exactly 5:38 p.m. this evening, Justice Randall Worrell told the 34-year-old Busby that he was free to go after a 12-member jury unanimously found him not guilty of unlawfully killing Devon Taylor, formerly of Gills Road, St Michael, on October 13, 2012. The jury deliberated for two hours and eight minutes before bringing back the decision. “Madam foreman and all your members, I thank you,” Busby said as he stood in the dock. When asked by members of the media for a comment, a smiling Busby replied, “I don’t want to talk, I just want to spend some time with my family”. He then walked out the courtroom and the Supreme Court embraced by two women, said to be family members. Busby then stopped for a short while to shake hands with Arthur and Rhea Layne, his legal representatives, before being hugged by a male who was on the outskirts of the court. But his road to freedom today was not before a question by the jury to clarify their seeming uncertainty. Before giving their verdict, the jury sought the direction of Justice Worrell after they were unable to unanimously agree after deliberating for two hours. They queried if they should be guided by whether the prosecutor had proved its case or whether it was a case of self defence. Justice Worrell advised them that their decision should be based on all the evidence that had been presented during the three-week long trial. “If you find based on the evidence that he was acting in lawful self defence then you cannot find him guilty and if you have any doubt then you have to find him not guilty,” Justice Worrell said. “If you find that he did not need to defend himself then self defence does not arrive. If the force was more than reasonably necessary then he was not acting in self defence and you have to return a verdict of guilty.” At that point, Justice Worrell said the court would accept a majority verdict. Five minutes later the jury returned with their verdict. Principal Crown Counsel Alliston Seale appeared on behalf of the Crown. The court had heard during the trial that Taylor who was 16-years-old at the time, died after sustaining six stab wounds to the left side of his body and lost eight litres of blood after being involved in a brawl. Throughout the trial, Busby had maintained his innocence, claiming that he had acted in self defence after being attacked by Taylor. Dr Margaret O’Shea, part of the medical team that performed surgery on Taylor at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) testified that there was a laceration to the deceased’s chest, a major vein was totally cut in his chest and there were four litres of blood left in his chest cavity. Dr O’Shea, who performed two surgeries on Busby, also testified that Busby received life-threatening injuries. She said Busby had sustained injuries to his stomach, pancreas and kidney and had lost 3.5 litres of blood. (BT)
EDWARDS: A GUILTY CALL GIRL – A non-national who stole a cell phone belonging to a ‘client’ after he refused to pay her for sexual services provided will have to wait until Friday to learn her fate. Just as Magistrate Joy-Ann Clarke was about to fine Tiffany Maria Edwards after she pleaded guilty to stealing a $600 cellphone belonging to O’Brien Weekes on May 25, 2018, the court was alerted to the fact that the accused had not regularized her status on the island. Sergeant Vernon Waithe revealed that Edwards has arrived on the island on March 18, 2018 as a visitor. Additionally, he said the accused also had two other matters before the court, one of which was indictable. He asked the magistrate to remand her until Friday when a decision could be made on how to proceed. (BT)
ABUSER JAILED – For stabbing his lover in a fit of rage after she threatened to leave him, Andre Jamal Henry will spend the next six months incarcerated at HMP Dodds. That was the sentence handed down by Magistrate Joy-Ann Clarke, when Henry reappeared in the District ‘A’ Magistrates Court today. The 37-year-old of St David’s, Christ Church, had been remanded last Wednesday pending sentencing. On that appearance he had pleaded guilty to unlawfully and maliciously wounding Ashaki Williams on October 3, 2019. As he stood in the dock, the magistrate told him that his actions had resulted in Williams suffering serious injuries to her left hand, including an injury that required 20 stitches. She then told him that only a term of imprisonment would suffice. “A crime like this, especially stabbing someone with a scissors is a very serious offence. “Unfortunately, I will have to sentence you to imprisonment because this crime is just too serious,” the magistrate told him moments before imposing the sentence. On hearing the news a tense looking Henry bowed his head and released a loud gasp. According to the facts of the case, the accused and complainant were in a relationship and have a two-year-old daughter. They lived at the complainant’s residence at Lower Collymore Rock, St Michael. However, the relationship was rocky and the two frequently had arguments. Around 6:20 a.m. on October 3 an argument started and the complainant told the accused she wanted to leave the relationship. She then left the residence and got into her car and tried to leave but the accused ran in front of the car blocking her path. The complainant then opened her door for her mother and the accused used the opportunity to jump into the car. After locking the doors of the car he took a scissors out of his pocket and stabbed at her. She used her hands to shield herself and as a result received injuries to her left palm and left index finger. The complainant’s sister eventually came to her rescue by using a brick to break the driver’s side window which allowed her to escape. The injured woman sought medical attention and received the stitches to her hand. The accused subsequently turned himself into police on October 15. (BT)
KING: TAP INTO THE NCF – The National Cultural Foundation, the biggest event planner in Barbados, should not be seen as the organising body for just NIFCA and Crop Over but an entity that could be utilised by national sporting federations in the island. Minister of Sport, Culture and Creative Economy John King expressed this view during a media conference held today by the Barbados Amateur Bodybuilding & Fitness Federation, after questions were raised about the standard of the annual schoolboy bodybuilding and schoolgirl body fitness competition organised by the National Sports Council. There were queries about whether the sound system would be improved for this year’s competitions scheduled for November 15 and about the late entries of competitors that often forced the show towards a 10.p.m. finish. “I sit and often wonder on the sidelines of sport and working outside of this job why a lot of government entities and sports council and federations would not use the National Cultural Foundation as part and parcel of being able to help them to organise a lot of stuff that they do. If you talk about creating a new culture or a healthy lifestyle – that is culture. So, I will implore you to seek out the National Cultural Foundation and see if their events planning department can help you with these things. Because it cannot be that all we see the NCF as doing is NIFCA and Crop Over. It cannot be. There is a lot more that we can do if we just begin to reach across borders and work with each other. “I don’t see why you should even have a problem with sound systems and all these kinds of things. Not when you have a National Cultural Foundation sitting down there which is responsible for all of these things. So, I am saying to you reach out to the NCF or reach out to the ministry itself and if we have to give the instructions from there to make it happen we are willing to do that, “ King said. Meanwhile, assistant director at the National Sports Council Mona Alleyne in response to those questions said screening would be done this year. She also added that even though there was no sponsor at this point in time for the bodybuilding and fitness competition, the NSC would ensure that competitors from first to sixth place got prizes for their participation. PUMP IT UP – The Barbados Amateur Bodybuilding & Fitness Federation (BABBFF) has plans to attract more individuals into the sport next year as they aim to target more young people within the schools and the wider community, says president Dr Alfred Sparman. Sparman spoke of those plans this morning at the Wildey Gymnasium where the eight-member team that represented Barbados at the just concluded Central American and Caribbean Championships held in Santo Domingo earlier this month, were celebrated by the association for their performances. According to Sparman, the BABBFF has ten to 11 professionals and the intention going forward was not only to host the Diamond Cup in Barbados every year but to make it a high class event. The local federation also hopes to develop bodybuilders in Barbados the size of the Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dexter Jackson and Phil Heath, some of the world’s greatest to ever grace the stage. Sparman emphasised that Barbados which has produced outstanding bodybuilders over the years will continue to maintain a clean slate and he encouraged this current generation to build a brand considering the scandals surrounding drug use in the sport. “We want to advocate a very clean sport, but there are rules for bodybuilding. As a matter of fact, we just heard about something coming up in 2020 where they will have lots of money out there for clean bodybuilders. So there are places out there for clean pros. “They are lots of events and competitions all over the world in the United States, Canada, everywhere, and now that they have become pros all they have to do is get there and of course there are monetary rewards… So, if you work very hard and you can compete at the international level that is how you get your finances. TAKE A BREAK SUKI – Barbados draughts champion Ronald “Suki” King should recharge his batteries before re-entering the arena. That’s the advice being offered by arch-rival Jack Francis following King’s humiliating 8-1 thrashing by Sergio Scarpetta during the recently concluded Three Move Restriction title challenge played at various venues here. “What I feel Suki should do now is to hang up his gloves for at least two years and come back in 2022. If he does that, then I believe he will be able to recharge his batteries. He has been playing world-class draughts for so long now that I could understand where his so-called tiredness would be coming from mentally, physically, emotionally and psychologically,” he told NATIONSPORT. NOT ON TRACK – United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator for Barbados and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Didier Trebucq is not convinced that Barbados and other countries are on track to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) they are aiming for by 2030. And he is calling on young people to help drive the necessary change. Trebucq was addressing the Take #Oneaction for the SDGs Media Zone and Spoken Word Challenge at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) today, to mark United Nations Day, which is in its 74th year. UN Day is officially October 24. “Today we wanted to hear from you about the future that you want, and what better way to do this than to talk about the Sustainable Development Goals,” he said. “We know that we are not on track, and that is our main message. We are not on track to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals if we continue on the path we are on,” Trebucq insisted. While congratulating the Mia Mottley led administration for its policies and progress being made in the area of youth development, and pledging continued support from the UN, the official said a lot more effort was needed. “The work requires further action. The world requires, and each country requires the action of young people. So we need you to foster changes. And of course, the UN as an organisation is with you,” he said. The SDGs are a set of targets agreed to by countries around the world in 2015 as it relates to human and country development. They include the alleviation of poverty and hunger, gender equality, clean water and sanitation for all, good health and well-being, quality education, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, climate action, justice and strong institutions. Minister of Youth and Community Empowerment Adrian Forde agreed that young people had a major role to play in the country achieving the SDGs. “As a country we cannot have a sustainable development goal and a policy unless it involves our young people. Whenever you talk about sustainable development you have to talk about our young people being the active players,” said Forde. He said it was for that reason that Government has been developing and implementing various youth policies as it focused on tackling a range of social issues as well as challenges associated with climate change. Pointing to the devastating impacts of climate change, Forde said it was critical that Barbados reduce its carbon dioxide levels and fossil fuel use, a mission he said government was working towards under the National Energy Policy for 2030. He said government was keen on protecting its oceans, since this could affect the island’s bread and butter tourism industry. “All of these things must inform how we as young persons threat to climate change,” said Forde, who put aside his prepared speech to “speak from the heart”. “I know that the young persons we have in Barbados will do everything to protect the environment, their country. And I want to recommit as a government that we will also play our part.” Director in the Office of Student Services at the Cave Hill campus Dale Lynch said global warming was threatening the existence of small economies in the region, adding that despite efforts, some gains were being eroded. She said the university was playing its part in helping to ensure the sustainable goals were achieved through its education and social programmes and developing well-rounded individuals. “The role of faculty in supporting national efforts to address societal concerns through research and projects is high on our performance agenda,” said Lynch, adding that the UWI’s social programmes provided a platform for students to give back to their communities. Through the spoken word, representatives from the various organisations at the UWI shared their vision and put forward recommendations on how individuals, businesses and governments can take action against climate change and other issues in order to achieve the SDGs. The Association of Bahamian Students emerged the winner in the spoken word challenge. (BT)
UP TO PAR – Hoteliers are being reminded of the importance of continuous training and upgrading of skills of their workers if they are to adequately compete with the rest of the world for tourism dollars. This message was hammered home on Wednesday at the Barbados Hilton Resort, as six individuals from five hotels across the island were awarded with scholarships to study revenue management and digital marketing. Chief Executive Officer of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) Senator Rudy Grant congratulated the scholarship winners, while disclosing that he was in discussions with the Ministry of Education and representatives of the Hospitality Institute at the PomMarine to see how best they could enhance the programmes there. “As we seek to compete with the rest of the world, and we accept that the world is now a small global village . . ., we need to ensure that we have all of the relevant skills, the competencies, the knowledge in order to facilitate a phenomenal experience for our visitors when they come to Barbados. That is very critical,” said Grant. “What will distinguish Barbados is not necessarily the type of marketing we engage in although that is extremely important. It is not necessarily what we have to offer naturally although that is important as well. It is not necessarily the airlift capacity, and that is critical. But what will distinguish Barbados relates to our individuals – Barbadians and their warmth, love, sincerity and the genuine manner in which they deliver service,” he concluded. Grant did not give details, but said discussions on the enhancement of the programmes at the Hospitality Institute were in the early stages. “We have to ensure that we are relevant for the times, and we have to ensure that our training institution is fit for the purpose of providing the skills necessary for us to globally become competitive in this very important industry,” he said. It was back in May last year during an education fundraiser event dubbed Paint and Groove that the idea of offering educational opportunities to workers in the tourism industry came about. It was then decided that training and development in the areas of revenue management and digital marketing needed to be enhanced. As such, Expedia, through a partnership with the BHTA and the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), decided to offer part scholarships for studies at the eCornell University for a number of local hotel workers. Marketing Manager for Expedia in Barbados Josea Browne said during the Paint and Groove event last year some $10,000 was raised for the grants. “We got it matched by a corporate sponsor. So then we were able to double the number of scholarships that we were able to offer. We originally wanted to do three, but we were able to do six in the end,” reported Browne. The six scholarship winners came from a field of 15 applicants. Each scholarship is worth US$1,800, a 50 per cent value of the total cost for the studies. The scholarship winners are Natalie Franklyn from Dover Beach Hotel, Melissa Defreitas of Ocean Hotels, Kyle Callender of Infinity on the Beach, Tanya Broomes of Royal Glitter Bay Villas, Sheena Goodridge of Cobblers Cove and Krystal Griffith of Infinity on the Beach. Congratulating the hotel workers on their latest achievement, president of the CHTA Patricia Affonso-Dass said she was delighted at the opportunity to provide educational support with the help of the Expedia Group. “Also, we have begun wider discussions at the regional level between CHTA and Expedia Group with respect to people development and human resources management. We are excited by that,” said Affonso-Dass. (BT)
STUDENTS TO TRACE THEIR ROOTS – Students in Barbados can now get to work to creating their family trees. The Genealogy Schools Project has been sanctioned by the Ministry of Education to encourage students at both the primary and secondary level to create their own family trees. The competition which will have various categories and students will be encouraged to be as creative as possible in their presentations, was launched at the Archives Department, today. It will also coincide with Barbados’ Vision 2020:We Gathering celebrations, which will seek to invite the Barbadian Diaspora back home. Giving an overview of the competition, manager of innovation and strategy at the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI), Terry Vanterpool-Cox, said BTMI and the Department of Archives and COPA Airlines were working collaboratively to bring more awareness to the topic of genealogy, a niche market for the tourism industry worldwide. “For decades Barbadians and visitors have expressed an interest in their ancestral heritage and so we would also wish to awaken this same enthusiasm in the children of Barbados,” Vanterpool-Cox said. The competition will be conducted in two age categories, including a Junior Division and Senior Division. According to the rules of the competition, which will climax in October 2020, students must submit one family tree representing both sides of their family, and each tree must be accompanied by a summary in English. The presentations should be on a standard 22”x28” Bristol board. While presentations must be printed or handwritten, pictures will be an asset and entries will be judged on creativity, content and quality. The prizes include trips to Panama, tablets and cash. (BT)
CURTAIN CALL – Students of St Leonard’s School were among the first to watch the pilot of Barbados’ first musical film You Never Know when it was launched at their school today. Writer and director of the short film, Jade Gibbons, told Barbados TODAY that the production, which is rated G, sends a message to viewers. “The composer Shakiel Stoute is actually a former St Leonard’s boy and our lead actor Dario Squires is also a former St Leonard’s student, so they felt that this would be a fitting place for us to just show the film and launch it just to get the feedback from the students. “We are using the session as a workshop, so it is not just about showing the film, but we want to have a holistic message. So we began with Mr Squires who is a professional swim coach and he is also certified in first aid and counselling. “He gave them a brief introduction about himself and about his experiences working in the prison and what prisoners say in terms of the choices that they made and what landed them in the position that they are in,” Gibbons said. As it relates to making choices, the filmmaker shared that the message behind the film was that choices an individual makes today impacts the future he or she has tomorrow. The film which will be officially available online from November 15, stars Dario Squires, Dereja Mason, Donna Gibbons-Browne, Jamal Dawe, Abigail Gall and Ki’ann Browne. Gibbons, a graduate of Harrison College, Winchester University, Hampshire, and the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, said those interested in the film would be able to purchase it on jadegibbons246.com. “To rent the film is going to be US$4. Rental means you have 30 days to start watching and once you start watching it you have 24 hours to watch it as much as you want. Or alternatively, you can buy the film for US$5.99 which means that it is yours forever. You can use any credit card or visa debit card or master debit card,” she said. The writer and producer of Gibbons Creative Education also indicated that she was now exploring the possibility of having a school tour where students would be allowed to watch the film at a discounted rate. “If there are any schools out there who wants us to come you can contact us through our website. We are also looking into doing an official screening next year January for Errol Barrow Day,” Gibbons said. Following the launch, some students said they were impressed with the high quality of the film and called for more to be added to it since they considered it to be too short. (BT)
SWINGING & SWAYING – The elegant waltz, precision-focused paso doble and fast-paced quickstep were among the dance styles featured in the 2019 edition of the Livy and Betty Alleyne Ballroom Dance Centre Stars of the Future competition. Founders of the group, husband and wife duo, Livingstone and Betty Alleyne, have dedicated their lives to teaching the artform. They have received international acclaim, being awarded the Dancesport International Award by the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) in London for their continued contribution to dance. Their inaugural local contest took place in 2001 and they have been churning out award-winning dancers since then. For the past three years, they have copped the highest awards at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, England. Last year, Shane Alleyne and Aleksandra Przybylak won the Gold Star and Above Level; Zachary Hamid and Ambia Paris were the Gold Latin winners and Cherise Rollock won gold in Bronze Latin. They are determined to show that a small island like Barbados can continue to be a force to be reckoned with in dance as they are soon set to return to Blackpool for this year’s contest. Betty confirmed, “We have a high achieving team as usual. We normally place in finals of most categories we enter, and I expect the same thing this year. We not only place in finals annually, but we are triple gold winners in some categories.” She added, “We look forward to the exciting atmosphere in the large hall filled with over 5, 000 persons and the competitions, one at a time.” Dance Stars for the Future, which was hosted on Saturday evening in the auditorium of the St Leonard’s Boys’ School, is part of the preparation process to assist the 30-member strong contingent get ready for their trip. This international competition will see the delegation competing with dancers from across the United Kingdom as their quest for more medals continues. Every effort is being made to ensure that they are competition-ready and in prime form to make their mark on the world stage. Competitors squaring off before the judges ranged in ages from under 8 to over 65 and competed in categories spanning from pre-bronze, which is the beginner’s level, straight up to the gold level. Many of the competitors pulled out all the stops, donning vibrant eye-catching costumes to match their style of dance. Though some of the divisions only had one entrant, that did not deter the dancers from putting their best foot forward. In some instances, multiple age categories took to the dance floor once they were performing the same dance style. This atmosphere of having to manoeuvre around other dancers was optimum to prepare them for the international realm. Also, in preparation for the stringent guidelines at that higher-level, participants were summoned only using the numbers they received at registration. Among the myriad of dancers who excelled were Alexander Price-Greaves and Daniel Jones winning Youth Silver/Gold and Youth Gold for Ballroom. Though just 17 and 15 years old respectively, they will show their mettle as they face off in the adult category in Blackpool. Alleyne said: “Stars of the Future competition went really good on Saturday evening. I think more supporters and competitors of the dance form would have added to the night. The competition was very warm, competitive and filled with excitement on a whole.” (BT)
FLAIR, STYLE, SOCA –Jodie Williams was made for the stage. Writing skills? That’s a check! The ability to sing and act? Big check! Good looks? That’s a plus as well! From the age of 14 he was putting in the effort penning his own poetic works and songs. He told Bajan Vibes that he has no favourite genre to perform or write as he does both and has a catalogue of work including soca songs, pop, rap, R&B and dancehall. However, he said that soca songs tend to be easier for him to write. But who is Jodie and what keeps him going? “I am just [a laid-back guy] who loves chilling with close friends and drinking wine and having conversations. I love to make people laugh and I genuinely like to see people enjoying themselves and having fun,” he explained. “My motivational slogan is that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” he added. Though Jodie has a resilient personality, he said he’s been getting challenges with exposure. “I find it hard to get interviews, but my song Do De Dawg this year was well received. However, it was extremely difficult getting interviews. Certain individuals would read my messages, look at them and refused to respond… people were asking why the song was not getting a lot more airplay for a well-written song,” he said. The resident of Christ Church said that as a newcomer he was not surprised by the ignorance of DJ’s and radio personalities, so he doubled his efforts towards bettering his craft and pushing his entertainment goals. He then decided to rebrand himself and started to call himself Mr Williams. “The name came from my girlfriend who said that I’m a sophisticated type of guy who dresses in suits and my friends started to address me by that name,” he said. The 27-year-old said that his parents were very supportive, but he has another goal which they also throw their support behind. “I would like to become a coach and finish my second degree in physical education. My first degree was Law and Sociology,” he explained. At this moment he is looking to create a name known locally and regionally for himself as a singer and writer. He added that he is also interested in working with international artists. “My advice for other artists is to keep working and sculpting your craft, push your music. You don’t have to sit back and wait on the radio stations to play your music because it may never play. Use other mediums to project your music. Don’t be deterred from being rejected. It’s all a part of the process and have fun doing what you love.” (BT)
HIS “IMPOSSIBLE DREAM” CAME TRUE - In what may have felt like an impossible dream Damien Smith has finally been able to lift the Richard Stoute Over 21 Competition title. After repeatedly knocking at the door, Smith has finally been able to take the top position. Looking dapper in both appearances, the singer’s experience was evident in his polished delivery of You Never Walk Alone and the aptly titled Impossible Dream. He showed restraint where necessary in his performance and let loose at just the right moments earning 863 points. Fourteen points separated Smith from second placed finisher Zoe Armstrong. Just before declaring the winner, chief judge Sheldon Hope indicated just how close the battle for the top places was. He shared, “In the first half, one person was leading and then in the second half, the other person took the lead but because the first half score was just a bit higher, that person held on for the win.” Armstrong has a theatrical style which seems tailor made for stage productions. Her fashion choices matched her song choices. Her flowy, baby blue ensemble matched the light-hearted feel of Colours of the Wind and her wine coloured, sequined bordered dress was a fitting choice for the operatic I Dream a Dream. The beauty of her voice was on full display. Crowd favourite Rashida Codrington took third place with 804 points. She was the first performer on stage and her inspirational In the Name of the Lord set the tone for what the expectation would be for the other 13 competitors. She poured out her heart with her passionate delivery of her second song I Who Have Nothing. She even dropped to her knees at the close of the song. Fourth place was awarded to Anita Charles with 766 points. In the opening half, she performed the calypso Ghetto Cry. Her phrasing and diction were on point. She returned in the second half with the reggae version of Someone Like You. The top five were rounded out by Laverne Smith with 746 points. She struggled with the higher notes in her first half rendition of Listen, but she seemed more comfortable with When You Tell Me That You Love Me. One competitor left disappointed on competition night would be Paul Legall. The crooner delivered a flawless presentation with Bridge Over Troubled Water and was poignant with the emotionally charged The Day You Gave Me a Son. With the soothing quality to his beautiful voice he should have comfortably been among the top placed finishers and it was hard luck that he was not among the frontrunners. It was undeniable that the judges had a difficult task cut out for them. Murmurs among the audience suggested they believed Tricia Maynard had done enough to be in the top order. Her jazzy rendition of Summertime with a slowed tempo was well received and so too was her dramatic interpretation of Gabby’s Emmerton. Unfortunately, she was shut out. Other competitors in the final were Sandy Samuels, Bentley Jones, Shane Headley, Juanita Paul, Benoni Blackett, Sherry Ann Husbands and Anne-Marie Boyce. Guest performers included Shawnee and Arthur Moore. There will be a one week break and the competition will resume with the staging of the finals at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre on November 3rd, 2019. (BT)
PERSEVERANCE PAYS OFF – A feeling of sheer euphoria washed over Damien Smith when he realised after years of participation in the Richard Stoute Competition he was finally a champion. “From the time I heard the judge say contestant No. 6-Damien Smith, I felt a rush of excitement come over me. All I could do is smile from ear to ear and I said to myself, finally my hard work has paid off!” Smith was declared the winner of the Over 21 category on Sunday night as he eclipsed the 13 other competitors who were wrestling for the title. The 33-year-old is a former student of the Deighton Griffith Secondary School and is currently employed as a customer service officer with CIBC First Caribbean Bank. He gave Bajan Vibes some insight into who he is. He shared, “I started singing from the age of ten when I used to sing with The Canticles, which was a gospel group.” With a quick smile he admitted, “Well, I love a good party so a perfect night out for me would be at an all-inclusive party with great music, great food and drinks.” When not on stage, you can find him lounging on the beach or travelling. Also among his favourite activities in his downtime are going to the beach, surfing the Internet and catching up on his TV shows. Even 24 hours after taking the title he was still basking in the glow of triumph. “I’m still on my high, I feel fantastic, I’m getting a lot of comments from friends and family and other people who follow the show saying congratulations and it was well deserved,” he noted. Smith is cognisant that some of the island’s best entertainers have participated in this long running competition and that fact makes this victory even sweeter. He expressed, “Winning this show means I can say I’m a champion. A number of great talents in Barbados came through this show and now I can say I won said show.” Singing is one of Smith’s greatest loves and his face has become a staple at karaoke island wide. He shared, “I have won numerous karaoke competitions.” Recently, he impressed the judges in the Baje to the World competition in which participants are vying for the chance to participate in an international talent competition. Smith won the preliminary that was hosted in St George. His latest title is special to him. “This is a big win for me because this was the finals of an established competition and I came out on top,” he excitedly added. “I have entered the competition 5 times, first time I didn’t place, second time I came third, the third and fourth times I came second and now I’m the winner. So that’s why you would hear a lot of people say, ‘Finally’,” he laughingly explained. His continued participation in this musical contest has led to moments of introspection. He revealed, “Being involved in this competition has showed me how patient I am. I didn’t realise how much perseverance I had.” Beyond revealing his strength of character, he observed, “It has taught me to be confident in myself and my performances.” He has a rudimentary approach to preparation – it is all about getting into the right mind space. “Before competition, I say a prayer first, then I would find a quiet corner and get myself into competition mode. I go through my songs in my head over and over and I would also go through my performance in my head.” Hard work and dedication seldom fail and his contentment with finally reaching this pinnacle is unmatched, well, so far at least. He encouraged anyone who is thinking about charting a similar course to dive right in: “I would tell that person go for it, go to the workshop on Thursdays so you can get your training and give it your all!” (BT)

The 10 most impactful slides from Netflix's groundbreaking culture deck that experts say still hold up 10 years after its debut (NFLX)
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings first publicly released his company's culture deck in 2009.
In more than 120 slides, Netflix broke down its management and cultural philosophy to prepare potential recruits for what it would be like to work with the then DVD-by-mail operation.
The company regularly updates its cultural philosophy in a memo on its website. But current document retains many of the core principles of the original.
Business Insider breaks down the most bold, and at times controversial, slides that still hold up 10 years later.

Ten years ago, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings first publicly released his company's culture deck. In more than 120 slides, Netflix broke down its management and cultural philosophy to prepare potential recruits for what it would be like to work with the then DVD-by-mail operation.
The presentation, previously used as an internal onboarding document for new hires, offered a peek into the culture of the growing tech operation, which is now worth more than $125 billion and employs about 7,100 people around the world.
Some aspects of Netflix's management philosophy instantly stirred up controversy, like its high-performance culture, lack of a formal vacation policy, and aversion to "brilliant jerks."
But the document also set an example for other employers, who have since adopted some of its aspects, or begun formalizing and being more transparent about their own cultures.
Top Facebook exec Sheryl Sandberg once said the deck "may well be the most important document ever to come out of the Valley."
Netflix regularly updates its culture and management philosophy in a memo on its website. But the document retains many of the core principles of the original deck.
"The Netflix culture deck, when it came out, was certainly an innovative way to approach a corporate culture," Jodi Chavez, the president of staffing agency Randstad Professionals' life sciences division, as well as its executive search arm, Tatum, told Business Insider. "The majority of ideas in the deck are still very relevant today."
Here are the 10 most impactful takeaways of the culture deck that was published in 2009.
Vacation: "There is no policy or tracking"
Unlimited vacation is pretty common in workplaces today, especially in the tech sector.
But in 2009, it was still radical for a company to buck the tradition of allotting employees specified amounts of vacation days and tracking the time they took off.
Around 2004, a few years after Netflix went public, management decided to simplify its processes by scrapping its standard paid-time-off policy and allowing employees to take whatever time they felt was appropriate, as Patty McCord, coauthor of the Netflix culture deck and the company's former chief talent officer, described in Harvard Business Review.
Netflix says in its culture deck that since it didn't track the hours employees spend responding to work emails or working on projects on nights and weekends, during their personal time, there was no sense tracking their time off either.
People should be able to set their own work hours, and police their own vacation time, as long as they are able to do good work. "We should focus on what people get done, not on how many days worked," the deck says.
The company encourages management to set that precedent by taking vacation themselves, and telling the rest of their teams to do the same.
Unlimited vacation or honors-system-style policies have become more common in other workplaces as well, recruiters say.
"At Netflix, employees not only have control over their work hours but also have unlimited vacation," Chavez, at Randstad, said. "That's a policy growing in popularity with many companies, as it does give people more freedom to work and live the way they choose."
Process can hurt more than it helps
As with vacation tracking, the Netflix culture deck points out that too much process can get in the way of people being able to do their jobs efficiently.
The 2009 culture deck says there is "good" process that helps people get more work done, and "bad" process that can be a hindrance, even if it's designed to prevent mistakes.
For a company like Netflix, which is constantly adapting to evolving shifts in consumer behavior, those bad processes can be fatal.
In another slide, Netflix points out that process can be great, until technology, new competition, or other factors shift the market:
"Company is unable to adapt quickly because employees are extremely good at following the existing processes, and process adherence is the value system," the slide says. "Company generally grinds painfully into irrelevance."
Cofounder and founding CEO Marc Randolph thinks Netflix's ability to adapt quickly, which stems from its culture, has set it apart from other media companies that are moving into streaming today, like Disney and WarnerMedia, and helped it survive against Blockbuster during the DVD era. It has proven itself willing to abandon what's working if a better process or business model presents itself, he said.

"Freedom and responsibility"
Where Facebook has "move fast and break things" and Google has "don't be evil," Netflix's cultural motto is "freedom and responsibility."
The idea is to hire talented people who are self-disciplined, and then get out of their way.
The deck says that the best way for Netflix to attract and nurture innovative people as it grows is to give them freedom. As such, it wants fewer rules, not more.
But it can only do that if its employees are responsible, self-motivated people; the type of people who pick up trash when they see it lying on the floor, as another slide in the deck says.
Netflix's vacation policy is one way the company gives employees the freedom to be responsible for their own time off.
Another example is its expense policy. Employees can expense whatever they think is fair, but are encouraged to act in the company's best interest, such as only spending as much as they normally would while traveling, or disclosing gifts sizable gifts from vendors.
"If you're careful to hire people who will put the company's interests first, who understand and support the desire for a high-performance workplace, 97% of your employees will do the right thing," McCord wrote, in Harvard Business Review.
An insistence on "high performance"
Netflix's ethos of freedom and responsibility ties into a culture insistent on "high performance."
The Netflix deck compares the video company to a professional sports team. Every employee should be playing at the top of their own fields. That means hiring and supporting top performers, and routinely firing those that don't measure up.
The culture can be intimidating to some staffers. It's not an environment for everyone, the document says. "Some people, however, value job security and stability over performance, and don't like our culture," another slide says. "They feel fearful at Netflix."
The candor in the culture deck was surprising when it was first released, though likely not surprising to anyone who had worked at Netflix, where honesty was a top value.
"It was unique that they were willing to share that with the masses," Ryan Sutton, a district president at Robert Half Technology, a staffing firm, told Business Insider. "It's different to truly take what is an internal look and put it out to the world."
The slide says the company is trying to get better at hiring only people who thrive in its high performance culture, which may have been part of the motivation for releasing the culture document.
"When we pushed it to the internet, we didn't do it so that everyone could read our treatise and copy the way we worked," McCord said during an August webinar hosted by Business Insider. "We did it so that our candidates could get a brief overview of what it would be like to work at Netflix and it would change our interview cycle."

Adequate employees get the axe
Netflix's obsession with high performance means that merely meeting expectations isn't good enough.
"Adequate performance gets a generous severance package," the document says.
The company typically offers four months of full pay to salaried employees who are fired.
Routine firings also free up cash for Netflix to pay its other employees top dollar. "One outstanding employee gets more done and costs less than two adequate employees," another slide says. "We endeavor to have only outstanding employees."
This slide may have seemed bold when Netflix published it, but staffing professionals in the tech sector say it was a common practice at many tech companies, whether they publicly stated it or not.
"They wanted to be a leading company that was revolutionary, and in order to the accomplish that they needed top talent," Sutton, at Robert Half Technology, said. "Where did anything start in culture? Was this something that Netflix branded per se, or the culmination of a lot of really good entrepreneur techniques that companies had been refining for years, all the way back to Steve Jobs and Apple?"
The "keeper test"
Netflix has a method for weeding out adequate or underperforming employees. It's called the "keeper test."
Even today, it is one of the more controversial aspects of the streaming company's culture.
The keeper test requires managers to ask themselves, how hard they would fight to keep a given employee if they were leaving for a competitor. People they would not fight to keep are fired.
There are no quotas for how many people managers need to fire, but they're told to conduct the keeper test regularly. Employees are also encouraged to frequently ask their managers to ask the keeper question to learn where they stand.
The Wall Street Journal reported in 2018 that the test created a culture of fear within Netflix. One former employee told the publication he was constantly anxious about getting fired, and ultimately quit after a few years at the company.
Others appeared to have no hard feelings over being fired. Netflix's longtime chief product officer, Neil Hunt, for example, failed the keeper test in 2017 and was cut from the company. He told the Journal he had to "separate the emotion from the logic" to understand the decision.
Netflix told the Journal that employees are only fired for performance reasons.
Radical transparency
Honesty is at the heart of Netflix's culture. It values radical transparency, about as much as it insists on high performance.
Netflix often follows up firings with emails and meetings explaining why that person got fired to their relevant teams, the Journal reported.
Those emails can seem harsh, but they stem from the example that cofounders Hastings and Randolph set at Netflix early on.
Randolph, Netflix's first CEO, described in his memoir, "That Will Never Work: The Birth of Netflix and the Amazing Life of an Idea," how Hastings used a PowerPoint presentation outlining his accomplishments and shortcomings to push him out of the CEO role.
Hastings made a "meticulous argument" for why Randolph was not fit to run the company alone, according to the book. Hastings then asked Randolph to step back into the president position, while Hastings took on the chief executive role. Randolph agreed, but he admitted in the book that the discussion "really hurt."
"A lot of the ways Reed and I treated each other translated into what Netflix became culturally," Randolph said in an August interview with Business Insider. "Both of us kind of shared this egoless decision-making where we could argue, we could fight, we could debate, but as soon as it became self-evident that something was right, it immediately didn't matter whose idea it was. We stood behind it."
Hard work doesn't matter
Netflix's document also tells current and prospective employees that it doesn't care how hard they work, or how many hours they are in the office.
The results are all that matter.
The most up-to-date culture memo acknowledges that great work usually takes considerable effort, but that effort is not how people are judged at Netflix.
"As workplace cultural evolved over the years, if you were there early or late the perception was you must be working hard," Sutton, at Robert Half Technology, said. "What companies have recognized it that some employees might be more efficient that others."
It's "healthy" for employees to interview with competitors
Netflix doesn't give annual performance-based raises or bonuses. Instead, it pays all of its employees at the top of the market for their particular jobs.
In practice, that means people that have skills that are more in demand usually see their pay rise more quickly than others.
Managers are responsible for aligning pay to the top of market each year. But employees are also encouraged to go out there and see what they're worth themselves.
"It's a healthy idea, not a traitorous one, to understand what other firms would pay you, by interviewing and talking to peers at other companies," Netflix says.
It's a bold stance, but also a practical one. "It's a lot of work to really keep up with what the market is," Sutton, at Robert Half Technology said. "The only way to know is to sell."
It also makes Netflix more attractive when vying for talent in hyper competitive fields of tech. Those people will always know they're being paid as well as they would anywhere else, and they'll have no fear about testing the waters to prove it.
"The importance placed on salary and tying salary to the value someone brings to the company is a major differentiator that really sets Netflix apart in the crowded employer ecosystem," Chavez, at Randstad, said.
No "brilliant jerks"
There's a limit to the "high performance" culture at Netflix
The company won't tolerate what it calls "brilliant jerks," or people who are talented but don't play well with others. The culture deck says the cost to teamwork is just too high.
While the "brilliant jerk" may be a high performer, their attitude may make them impossible to work with, or make other people on the team dread coming to work.
This philosophy punctured workplaces in different forms before Netflix published its culture deck.
In 2004, Stanford professor Robert Sutton said in Harvard Business Review that toxic employees, no matter how talented, were not worth the fear and stress they provoked in other employees. The short essay, entitled "More Trouble Than They're Worth," argued that managers should institute a "no a------ policy" for hiring and promoting.
But it was still rare for a big company to publicize that policy as part of its culture. It's something more companies are starting to talk about today, especially in competitive fields, like tech, where people with highly sought after skills have the luxury of turning down companies with toxic cultures.
"Cultural hiring has really become increasingly important for candidates and clients in hyper-competitive environments," Sutton, at Robert Half Technology, said. "Every firm's department leader should think about, 'what is our culture?' and 'what are we looking for in perspective employees as it relates to a culture match?'"

Perhaps more than most industries, specialists within the recruitment industry have built digital marketing into the heart of their everyday operations. For years the sector has accepted and prioritised the need to increase search visibility to attract candidates, while company research and client-engagement activities across social media form a huge part of day-to-day recruitment. Looking ahead to 2020, the recruitment and staffing industry will continue to evolve and adapt to change – but what will this future look like? We’ve invited three of the UK’s top recruitment sector marketing leaders to share their views on the future of digital recruitment – we hope you enjoy the blog! Our Panel: Owain Wood Head of Marketing Emma Allison Head of Marketing Shane McGourty Director Q&A: 1)What will the main digital marketing channels be for your company in 2019 and why? Shane McGourty In 2018 our in house AdView Publisher Program was our main focus. Our 500+ publisher network generated around 80% of our traffic and 2019 we of course, wish to grow this. “As a leading UK job search engine that relies heavily on volume users there are no roads untaken in our digital marketing strategy. In 2018 our in house AdView Publisher Program was our main focus. Our 500+ publisher network generated around 80% of our traffic and 2019 we of course, wish to grow this. That said, we have recently hired a new Head Of Traffic who has produced analysis showing Social Media channels such as Linkedin, Facebook and Instagram of all things are really pushing volume to our competitors. Needless to say, we are all over this now and plan to expand this to become 10% of our overall traffic by year end.” Owain Wood If you are creating engaging shareable content, it will get shared, links will get built and in turn that will influence your SEO. "Not a huge change from previous years to be honest. Website, Social Media and Content/SEO at the core and looking further into more interactive Online Events such as Webinars, Video and Podcasting. A website remains (in most instances) the first point of contact for a brand. We've just launched a brand-new site and our main-focus has been that you still need to make that important, great first impression on all devices. We've worked hard to create an experience that reflects our brand, if your current platform is not clearly representing your business, brand, products and services in the way you want it needs addressing. Personally, I've started to throw together Content, Social and SEO in one basket rather keeping them separate. One hand often feeds the other. Despite Google saying that social media is not a direct SEO ranking factor, it can amplify the ranking factors that Google does consider to be important. If you are creating engaging shareable content, it will get shared, links will get built and in turn that will influence your SEO (worth noting that Bing considers it a direct ranking indicator). Content is of course one of the best ways to drive traffic and lead-generation. We've worked hard with our SEO and Content agency to build a content plan that target keywords we are seeing from our own research but also creating content that addresses challenges we are seeing within our clients and they can directly relate to. Is the Webinar dead? I don't think so. I think it's still one of the best and most cost-effective ways to deliver content to a global audience. We're taking our offline events and duplicating them and running them digitally. The topics talked about at your roundtables or forums can easily be reproduced in digestible videos or podcasts. Again, it's brilliant content which can also help your SEO strategy, as well as engagement with your target audience. Once you've got the content, gate it and then integrate it into your email and social media campaigns." Emma Allison Social media will continue to be an important channel for us in 2019 "Our main focus has traditionally been around creating great content and becoming an authority in our space. Towards the end of last year, we launched our new website and this year we've been working on useful new features for our users such as an industry event calendar and a salary survey tool. In addition to optimising our website, social media will continue to be an important channel for us in 2019. This week we hit 10,000 LinkedIn followers, which was a great milestone, but even better when you take into account that relatively our engagement metrics are also increasing." 2) What digital marketing channels will grow and which will shrink in 2019/20 in the recruitment sector? Owain Wood Bad content is just as bad as no content at all. "How many buzz words can I get in here? Seriously, the use of Data will continue to grow. Recruitment agencies have access to a plethora of data on their CRM/ATS which you can use to feed various campaigns and enhance personalisation. Then we start getting into the realms of automation and AI. But there are still in their infancy for most recruiters. I’ve been experimenting with landing pages with all custom content, from PURLS, all the way to change the content dependant on industry. Regarding what will shrink - content for content’s sake. Bad content is just as bad as no content at all. When devising content topics, be strategic about what you are writing about. If everyone else is writing about the same topic, find a niche, as posts from brands with more authority will bury yours. Finally, someone needs to step up and put that last nail in the coffin of Pop-Ups. It should be a criminal offence to have pop-ups on mobile devices. Oh I’m while on my high horse, same for autoplay videos too. Get in the sea!" Emma Allison I believe we’ll see more agencies upping their efforts and investing more in email marketing, SEO, social media, content marketing etc. than ever before. "I expect social media will continue to grow as a channel within the recruitment sector over the next few years. Live video for instance has been gaining momentum for a while now, with many brands experiencing higher impressions from Instagram and Facebook stories, than posts published on their newsfeed. As LinkedIn Live rolls out later this year, I’m sure like me, many recruitment marketers will be keen to trial the new platform. From live streaming events and real-time Q&As with clients and candidates, there will be lots of new opportunities to stand out. I don’t see any of the major digital marketing channels shrinking within our sector any time soon, if anything I believe we’ll see more agencies upping their efforts and investing more in email marketing, SEO, social media, content marketing etc. than ever before. From an online advertising perspective, I think it’ll be the job boards and aggregators that will suffer and within the next 12 months those markets will have shrunk significantly as a result of Google for Jobs." Shane McGourty Will Google Adwords suffer? “Google jobs is the big fish here, that is going to be huge and has already made a massive impact since its go live late last year. The question is will Google Adwords suffer on the back of this new strategy? I also see Bing is now trying to compete with Linkedin jobs now being displayed alongside their job search queries. These are interesting times!" 3) What new developments/trends in the industry are you excited (or concerned) about? Owain Wood Marketing automation used to the preserve of those with deep pockets but it's available to those “less fortunate” to experiment with. "I'm always excited about new technology. Marketing automation used to the preserve of those with deep pockets but it's available to those “less fortunate” to experiment with. Clients and candidates are demanding more personalised experiences rather than a one size fits all approach. Adobe Target and Optimizely are a great place to start along with various add-ons for CRM's and ATS's. They've been around for a while (I trialled a service with RED way back in 2013) but they seem to have had a real push again in the last 12 months and that's Video Interviewing/Hiring Platforms. I'm sure it works for some companies but personally, why would I want to work for a company that would stick me in front of a camera and then ask me a set of pre-set questions to answer? If they don't have time to talk with me live, they can hire somebody else! Take a quick look at social media and the backlash and ridicule about employers using such platform is widespread." Shane McGourty The most exciting development for me is AI! “Google Jobs is new, and of course they at some point will look to monetise this traffic to replace lost revenue from Adwords. The most exciting development for me is AI. I am currently in talks with several Robo Advisor platforms to see how this could improve our business." 4) Has Google for Jobs had an impact on your digital strategy? If so, how? Emma Allison It's early days as far as Google for Jobs "As a business, we’ve always invested lots of resources into optimising all of our marketing channels and our strategy for Google for Jobs has been the same. It's early days as far as Google for Jobs goes, but it's already having an effect on where we choose to spend our budget, with more focus onsite on job boards than ever before." Shane McGourty This has not stopped us focusing on increasing our other marketing channels “Yes and no. Like everyone, we made all the necessary changes to AdView to get as much benefit as we can for our users but this has not stopped us focusing on increasing our other marketing channels.” Owain Wood If you advertise jobs on your website, you should get your site updated ASAP. "I'd been watching Google Jobs out the corner of my eye since rumours started about it in late 2016 before it launched in the States in Summer 17'. Together with my web team and SEO at my previous role, we had assumed that it would use Structured Data in some form or another and so before launching our latest version of our site had done some pre-prep. Before it launched in the UK I had already made the switch to an Executive Search firm where we don't advertise vacancies in the same way so haven't had a chance to see the raw data from the coal face. If you advertise jobs on your website, you should get your site updated ASAP. 30% of Google searches are job related - you are missing a trick if you aren't." 5) How do you track ROI from your digital marketing channels? Emma Allison We work very hard with our consultants to make sure they’re recording where leads, jobs and candidates are originating from. "Tracking digital marketing effectiveness is always challenging in a business where the sales force are the final link in the conversion chain. We work very hard with our consultants to make sure they’re recording where leads, jobs and candidates are originating from, to enable us to optimise our spend and resource, but it’s a constant battle! We’re more sophisticated now than we’ve ever been when it comes to measuring ROI, but we’ve got some automation work to do on our CRM to improve further still." Shane McGourty Tracking is getting extremely sophisticated. “Tracking is getting extremely sophisticated. A business like ours that has a large job based Publisher Program needs a good mix of everything, from custom internal software to Google Analytics, Tag manager and Floodlight.” When weighing up the future of digital recruitment and the marketing opportunities and challenges, each firm and job board will have its own advantages and disadvantages in a market where well-established marketing channels are evolving. Our expert panellists have a huge amount of experience across the full marketing mix and as we can see from their insights, there’s a lot to consider when developing a digital recruitment strategy for 2019, 2020 and beyond. In such a relationship-based industry, it’s vital that recruitment firms are using all appropriate channels to bring candidates closer. Entelo, the recruitment sector software company, released data in 2018 indicating that recruiters spend almost one third of their time focused on a single role – the advance of AI, chatbots and intelligent user-experience and onsite content the engages candidates can make an enormous difference to productivity in the sector – but not every firm will capitalise. The Future of Digital Recruitment – SEO and PPC As competition hots up, (potential) disruptors like Google for Jobs emerge and the sector evolves, there will always be a requirement for recruitment marketers to select the best SEO agency available to them. There’s plenty of keyword ‘pools’ to fish in, from searches about specific job titles and roles with specialist qualifications, through to geography-based searches, industry searches and a combination of all of the above for those ultra-specific long tail searches. Nevertheless, it takes a rigorous approach to ensure that your onsite content and site structure is optimised to be competitive to earn this traffic, with job portals, specialist and generalist recruiters all fighting it out for the most commercial rankings. Much like how the optimal structure for an eCommerce brand cascades down from home page to category pages, brand pages and product pages…the logical structure for a recruitment site flows from homepage to industry verticals, specific types of role and then individual job listings, with focused internal linking to drive rankings for priority pages. Use of structured data and Schema will give the best chance for search engines to index and properly rank fresh content – and of course the recruitment sector is one in which fresh content through new roles is a fact of life. A plus point of being disciplined with this type of SEO activity is that this is the type of information that Google for Jobs needs to properly surface your content. In a post-GDPR world, the value of inbound marketing methodologies such as SEO, hyper-targeted PPC and brand-building through digital PR will add value. One point that our expert panel agree on is that whatever your starting point, recruitment marketers can’t be casual about new digital opportunities to engage clients and talent. Thanks again to Owain Wood of Carmichael Fisher, Emma Allison of Forward Role and Shane McGourty of AdView for their awesome contributions to the panel – keep an eye for future expert industry panels in future here on the Blueclaw blog! Let's say you are content with the life you are living so far. You live in a town that you love, have a house you're happy with, and if you have kids, they attend a really good school. Gains
One of the obvious perks with taking an out-of-state job would the opportunity to have a fresh start and work somewhere where you will be happier, but are there any additional perks with moving? While you're looking into potential employers in this new area, make sure to perform a thorough check on that company. Loses
Immediately, the people in your family are the first to come to mind when thinking about potential losses. Whether you have a partner and children, or you're single but still live close to home, your family is likely going to be affected by your choice to move for work. If it's negatively, you should make sure that the pros of moving outweigh the cons for not just you, but for them too.
Salary
Cost of living varies per state, so it's important to take that in consideration as well as other related factors when you consider an out-of-state job offer. Things like the cost of relocating, gas, the sort of commute you might have to make if you can't find a decent place to live close by, and possible childcare options if your family has been helping you with this.
Contingency Plans
No matter how much researching you perform, there's a risk that even if it works out on paper, you might still end up dissatisfied once you get there share temp agencies in Lakewood, CO. Resume Writing Service for Application Developer
Well, as a recruiter, my reputation is at risk every time I forward a resume to a hiring manager. Walk through the resume writing tips before editing the resume template. And it's impossible to position something, if we didn't deeply understand the role in the first place. Job aspirants should look out for a resume template rather than a curriculum vitae template. Ok? It's an advertisement for YOU. And, don't be afraid to take some risks and apply for a job you're interested in, even if you don't quite match all the qualifications. It is advisable to use those websites to download the required templates for a better work.

Having a lot of typos in your resume would spell doom for your job application, as you have not given the time to proofread your resume thoroughly. And, it doesn't cost you a cent. However, what if the resume writer is using old-fashioned techniques (think "Chronological and Boring")? Write this on Your Wall Resume Writing Service for Application Developer. There are many sites dedicated to this service and will do an excellent job of writing or assisting you with your resume. Instead, they should be an expert and have a track record in landing OFFERS. There are numerous advantages of getting resume writing assistance. These prospective candidates committed what I call the "Seven Deadly Sins of Resume Writing"

On the other hand, if you think of resume writing as an opportunity to create a beautiful advertisement, you will feel proud of the final product. Not only that, but a well-crafted resume will put the decision-maker you meet with in a hiring frame of mind. The experience summary is where the recruiter mainly concentrate on a resume. If you're talking about a position you held in the past or an accomplishment you already achieved, use past tense. Get someone else you trust to look at it. It should reflect your personality in a strong language. The curriculum vitae should highlight the talent of the candidate's skills and qualifications. Stone paper, for example, has a surprisingly smooth texture that could make the average hiring manager want to hold on to it longer.

A resume outline will help you get organized and will prevent you from overlooking any essential pieces of information that should be included. If this is the case, then the option is open for you to seek resume writing assistance from a professional resume writing service. Or, even worse, the resume is hand-written! Read Resume Writing Service for Application Developer. You want to change jobs (within your field) for better salary, benefits, or chance at promotion. If you're at this site, you're probably not an experienced, professional resume writer. There are many sites dedicated to this service and will do an excellent job of writing or assisting you with your resume. So think "advertising.
Don't let all these efforts go to waste by avoiding these common resume writing mistakes that can cost you the job. If you DO decide to go this route, ask yourself if the software is billed as using marketing and copywriting techniques. My advice to this practice is DON'T DO IT!! Again, candidates run the risk of making an embarrassing professional faux pa. What does that have to do with a Sales Manager position? As you can imagine, these prospective candidates were not selected for interview. I used some of those contacts along with my many years of experience to begin the development of my resume writing process. There are basic resumes and then there are effective resumes. If we were to meet a random stranger who was currently working in the role that we are writing a resume for, they would assume we currently worked in that role as well, because we knew so much about it.
I've been writing resumes for a long time now and have written resumes with extremely high application-to-interview conversion rates, and through that experience I can assure you that it takes much longer than minutes to understand someone's background. That is it. Personal information The third Deadly Sin of resume writing is including personal information on a resume. Here is why By browsing the listings that are submitted to the agency, you will get a feel for the skills that employers in your area are actually looking for. How will your interview answers separate you from your competitors? Unrelated personal interests and hobbies Several years ago, when writing my first resume, I remember being directed to add my hobbies and interests at the bottom of the resume. Finally, no matter how you choose to proceed with creating a resume, every step you take with resume development should be done calmly, and without any negative emotion - even if you just lost your job! This is critical!
When writing about a skill you've used before and will keep using, use present tense. Job aspirants should look out for a resume template rather than a curriculum vitae template. On the other hand, if you think of resume writing as an opportunity to create a beautiful advertisement, you will feel proud of the final product. Do you feel that you would like to try resume writing help software? Somewhere between hiring a "live" coach and doing it all yourself? Just brief the work experience with roles and responsibilities and mention the key achievements accordingly. What is your objective in seeking a job? This objective should serve as a sort of bull's-eye to structure your resume around. A key skill required of most jobs is attentiveness to detail.

Some IRS online services, including ways to pay estimated taxes, are working despite shutdown
The Internal Revenue Service still is mostly closed due to the Capitol Hill impasse over how to fund the federal government. Just a relative handful of employees are in a few IRS offices, doing what have been deemed essential jobs, but not getting paid for their work.
Some of the agency's online operations, however, are up and running.
And other IRS services, particularly those that are funding in part by fees, could be restarted despite the closure of many of Uncle Sam's offices. In fact, one of those, the Income Verification Express Service (IVES) program, was restarted this week (more on the potentially resumed services later in this post.)
Online tax payments OK: One operational online tax service is the one I used today, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System, or as it's known in federal government acronymese, EFTPS.
OK, EFTPS (pronounced eff-tips) technically isn't part of the IRS. It's in another Treasury Department program, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service.
But EFTPS was among the first electronic ways for businesses and individual taxpayers to pay their taxes. And the IRS does have a Web page touting the benefits of this free tax e-payment option.
I've been using it for more than a decade and over those year, EFTPS has become easier to use, my 2007 experience notwithstanding.
I signed on to my EFTPS account this morning to make my last estimated tax payment for the 2018 tax year. It's due next Tuesday, Jan. 15.
I've been making estimated tax payments for years, way before the IRS shifted its focus to electronic taxes. In the past I mailed in Form 1040-ES vouchers, like the one pictured below.
Then when the world, including the IRS, went cyber, I joined it, electronically filing and paying my taxes.
Deadlines enforced despite shutdown: One of the great annoyances for taxpayers during a government shutdown is that even though the IRS is not fully operational, we still have to meet tax deadlines.
Estimated tax payments are among those required filings still in force.
When you have to make these four extra estimated tax payments, doing so via computer is, for me at least, much more convenient.
I know some folks, however, prefer paper. That's fine. The IRS still will take all filings and payments, including estimated ones, that arrive through the U.S. Postal Service.
If you're still old-school when it comes to filing and paying taxes, just make sure the envelope in which you mail your paper 1040-ES is postmarked by Jan. 15. The IRS views a postmark on an estimated payment as proof of timely payment, just as it does on the filing of annual tax returns.
Regardless of how you pay, don't miss the estimated deadlines, shown below.
Payment # Due Date* For income received in 1 April 15 Jan. 1 through March 31 2 June 15 April 1 through May 31 3 Sept. 15 June 1 through Aug. 31 4 Jan. 15 of the next year Sept. 1 through Dec. 31
*If the 15th is on weekend or federal holiday, the estimated payment is due the next business day.
If you don't, or don't make the payments on time, you'll end up facing penalties and interest.
Why estimated taxes are required: The hubby and I have been long-time estimated taxpayers because one or both of us has had side jobs to our salaried work. Since there was no withholding from that part-time contracted work, we were responsible for making sure we paid our income and FICA, aka Social Security and Medicare, taxes ourselves.
We've also always had some investments which, thankfully, tended most years to provide some unearned income. Estimated taxes must be paid on that money, too, since it also is not subject to payroll withholding.
You can read more about the whats and wherefores and ins and outs of 1040-ES payments in my prior estimated taxes primer.
The key is to make these payments on money you get that's not taxed. Again, failure to do so means you'll owe more thanks to the penalties and interest that the IRS will charge.
Closures don't stop tax deadlines: It's not surprising that ways to pay taxes are running without problem. In all previous government closures, and under the last unfunded operations contingency plan set out by Treasury, accepting payments is considered an essential function of the IRS.
But only one other shutdown, in February of this year, occurred during the main tax filing season. And it was resolved in less than a day.
Now we're looking at the 2019 filing season starting on Monday, Jan. 28, with less than full IRS staffing. Treasury and the IRS say they will call back as many employees to work, for no pay, to take care of filing.
We'll see if that happens and how well it will work.
And regardless of how smoothly, or not, the 2019 tax filing season goes, the IRS expects all returns to be filed by the April Tax Day deadline(s).
Tax data service resumes: But as the estimated tax schedule shows, taxes aren't confined to filing season. Our interactions with the IRS affect many other parts of our lives.
The IRS has been hearing from frustrated folks in these not strictly tax situations who are encountering some serious problems because of the severely limited IRS services. In response, the tax agency has opened its Income Verification Express Service (IVES).
IVES is a user fee-based program that mortgage lenders and others in the financial community use to confirm the income of a borrower seeking a loan. This earnings info is on a tax transcript that is delivered to a secure mailbox based on information received from a Form 4506-T or Form 4506T-EZ, which are used to request the copies.
Once the government went into shutdown, lenders and taxpayers alike have been unable to get this information. That's caused some loan seekers, notably those looking to get a home mortgage, problems in completing that financial process.
To help those folks, the IRS announced that, after "an extensive review, it began on Jan. 7 processing requests for the IVES tax transcript information.
The agency cautions that "it will take time to bring this service up to normal operating status. The IRS advises IVES participants that it may initially take longer than the standard 72-hour turnaround time for the IRS to process these requests. This is due to employees being brought back to work to begin processing backlogged requests since the funding lapse began on Dec. 22."
If you need a tax transcript, which is not an actual copy of filed returns but does show most of the information from a tax return, the IRS recommends going online to obtain it. That process, it says, is quicker, free and provided sufficient verification in most cases
If you find you do need a paper copy of your actual tax return, you can submit a Form 4506 along with a $50 fee for a copy of each return. Note, however, it could take up to 75 calendar days to process a request for a copy of a return. And that time frame was set for normal operation, not during a government shutdown.
Opening other fee-based operations: While the IRS technically doesn't have the federal funding to cover its operations, the agency seems to have found a way to work around this in areas where fees are involved.
The IRS notes that while federal law limits what it can do on behalf of taxpayers during a funding lapse, some programs funded by user fees present an opportunity for the IRS to help taxpayers receive critical services.
"These services can assist taxpayers trying to obtain mortgages or taxpayers affected by disasters who need copies of their tax returns as part of the recovery effort," said the IRS.
Using that justification, the IRS says that in addition to IVES, it also will start other user fee-based services, such as providing a letter needed by some taxpayers to certify their residency in the United States for certain tax treaty benefits and responding to requests for photocopies of tax returns.
And the nation's tax collector is asking for a little slack. Remember, its workers want to be doing their jobs — and getting paid to them. Until that's possible, the IRS says it "appreciates the patience of taxpayers and tax professionals during this period and encourages continued use of automated applications on IRS.gov, whenever possible."

6 ideas that would revolutionize the world...
I have 6 ideas for a social media website I wanted under the domain name of www.oooo.com... in that there are two sets of eyes representing two people... I like it because it’s simple and it’s where people can TRULY and EXPLICITLY get in touch with one another.... (it’s not a stab at websites like Facebook or Google +.... it’s just that I’m not the best writer)...
Idea 1 Guardian Witness
I came up with this idea about 8 years ago back when I was engulfed in the tech world and back when I was trying to get it made by organizations such as the CIA....
Basically what the app does is it runs a microphone in the background of the desktop computer, laptop or smartphone ( in addition to taking snappers of gps location) so that anyone with the app can feel safe in that there is a digital bubble of accountability surrounding them. Video can also be taken if the computer can take it( it may have to be low quality image quality to start in that phones are not strong enough to have high quality video taken and saved)...
The idea is basically that it’s a DVR running in the background of your laptop or smartphone and there’s an aura of accountability surrounding you because of that... think of it this way: people feel safer where there are security cameras installed... now imagine this: imagine everyone’s phone and laptop having a DVR on all the time... sure privacy concerns may come up - but this is the direction the world is headed towards....(it’s inevitable)
The Human Element: I feel that the future consists of smartphones being on all the time and recording all data to be stored in an external, retrievable database so that everyone’s lives can be saved and cherished...(kids can have a smartphone hang on there necklaces from childbirth even someday)... it’ll happen when phones are smarter and after a while ( when over a billion people have the app on)...
Idea 2 A.I. Generates Music and Video
I feel that in the future( note: when it’s more transparent?), people will post up detailed Facebook posts and the such, and because of the posts Music and/or video will be made because of it using machine learning algorithms....
What Facebook ( or Google) can do is give the option to fill out a survey after taking in the post so that customizable Music is generated and distributed accordingly...
Basically what people can do is write up a post, answer a few questions, and out comes a song with (maybe) some video... there will also be the option to customize the song either through refilling out the survey.... and by inputting data through something like Garage Band...
I feel like in the future EVERYONE will become a musician.... I came up with this idea when I was learning how to write music...and I didn’t know how to do so... people will TRULY be able to express themselves...through music...
and that’s not all.... the music Industry will be Completely revolutionized due to this.... imagine the smash hit records that will come out through the social media community (by chance, out of the BILLIONS of songs to be generated)... and I feel like film will also be revolutionized because of this idea( but not in the near future... maybe after a few years after machine learning for videos becomes more advanced)....
Idea 3 Bosser
I just like to call this one Bosser because the name stuck.... but basically what it is is an app to end homelessness ( it’s how I came up with the app).... but it transformed into a lifestyle app after more thought...
There’s about a quarter million homeless people in the USA and another quarter million homeless people in the EU at any given moment in time( at least in the current state of affairs)...Bosser can help end that...
I wanted to create algorithms which centered around rewarding people who help the homeless to get off the streets( and stay off the streets) with cash rewards... meaning they get paid to help the homeless...
How do you get a homeless person off the streets?... first you got to get his or her social security card from the social security building ... then a license from the dmv.... and then find him or her a room for rent, a cell phone... some clothes.... and of course.... A JOB... ( it also varies state by state, I think, plus, it doesn’t matter because if the life manager is getting paid 25-30$ per hour,... they will figure out a way for the homeless person to get documented! (Not that the app wouldn’t help... there would be assigned guidelines...))
This is where the money comes from( and how the life management specialists get paid... this will probably take a chunk of market away from staffing and life management agencies... but basically whoever takes care of these things for the homeless person will get paid a portion of what the homeless person gets paid ....(around 25% of the homeless persons salaries).... according to my calculations.... the life management specialists will average around 25-30$ per hour helping the homeless get off the streets( and to keep them off the streets)... landlords can install the app and get paid to wake them up for work.... so this has to be done very meticulously to have the app turn success.... but there is a future to this app....
In the future I believe that life management will become a prominent thing... people will pay and get paid to manage someone else’s life....I was thinking about how the homeless people turned successful lower middle class citizens can continue college.... and the life management specialists still get paid to advise them along the way.... mentor ship and guidance will become a thing...( because everyone wants to live the the most away from worries and burdens as possible)....
There’s more to the app... like how the homeless person and the life management specialists will have a rating system... but I’ll leave it at that ( hopefully you understand the vision)...
Idea 4 A.I. Powered Factionalizer
This idea goes well with the A.I. Music generator...in that it filters out opinions and retains only the facts in any given page or post(etc)... but basically that’s what it does.... through machine learning... I don’t see if anyone’s made this or not...
Idea 5 Invest in Movies Online
You know how big budget movies cost around 100 million dollars to make sometimes?... You know how you can invest in companies worth more than that on the stock market?... why not give people the option to invest in big budget movies online??? It would make things easier for the producers ... and social media users can profit off movie ticket sales....
An example would be about how it’d typically work... a movie under preproduction would be posted online... and it would be exhibited... and social media users would be able to invest in up to HALF the movies budget... and the other half would come from Hollywood executives...
Social media should have the option to make money like that.... plus everyone wins... I was thinking of having little Easter eggs in there such as how people could get free movie tickets after investing....
Overall more film would be created this way in that it acts as a throttle for the film industry... much lower budget films can also be involved.... people want to make money ...
Idea 6 Genetic testing community
This one I’m super excited about... celebrities all have similar brains in that their scope and visions are grand.... I was thinking of gathering the DNA of multiple celebrities....and using machine learning algorithms to find similarities between how their minds work...and applying those algorithms to the general public...
I feel that anyone with a social media account should be given a free genetic test( I’ll explain how this is to be funded later).... and algorithms from the above method should be used to find people who they REALLY may know ( not a stab at Facebook)... but I feel that’s what the future is going to be about.... people similar to one another will want to hang out with one another.... and this would spawn new things like new baseball teams ( for example)... and new workspace environments ...
You might be wondering how I’m going to get the genetic data of multiple celebrities... I was thinking that this could happen through the investment phase...( of whenever google or Facebook... or even Apple...) decides to make the idea.... in celebratory fashion...
Conclusion
I wanted to put all 6 ideas in one app idea...and allow it to make the world a better place:)

How to get a Job in the USA as an International Student
After higher education, many people dream of living permanently in America, because of availability in the job. I didn’t find much of it in the group so I tried something myself to write. This effort will be successful only if it benefits someone. Today I will tell you a description of how to apply for an Employment Authorization.
First of all, there are usually two ways to do jobs in the USA
Curricular Practical Training (CPT): This is applicable only for before graduation. This job is validating for only 12 months. (for full-time job)
Optional Practical Training (OTP): This term for 12 months for the first time.24 months is applicable only for STEM students.
It is applied before or after graduation. That means if you want to stay permanently through employment you have to go through this process.
Details of Optional Practical Training Application Required Documents:
1.Form i-765(attached with new i-20 from DSO)
2.Both side photocopy of I-94
3. photocopy of Employment Authorization Document (EAD)(if before)
4. 2 copies passport size photo (2”x2”)
The photo should be colorful and the background must be white/off white.
Head height should be 1” to 1.375” from top to bottom of the chin, and eye height between 1.125’’ to 1.375” from the bottom of the photo.
Write your name and i-94 number with pencil on the back of the picture
Photocopy of passport( CV and VISA)
All previous i-20 photocopy.
Check or money orders amounting $410 in favor of Department of Homeland Security
Form i-765:
Link: https://www.uscis.gov/i-765
Form Item#20 ( c )( 3 )(B) must be written when applying for the first time Post Completion(OPT) of Application
All other instructions are available at the link above
The mailing address for everything can be found here
https://www.uscis.gov/forms/forms-information/uscisphoenix-and-dallas-lockbox
Remember to send any address depending on the current address of the student
NOTE:
Starting OTP at any time within 60 days after the graduation date. It is illegal to be employed somewhere in the middle of the graduation date and OTP start date.
According to the USCIS website, you are supposed to get the ID card within 90 days after applying for OTP. But usually, it comes before the due date. However, it should be applied for at least two and a half months before.
USCI also sends a receipt notice within 2 to 4 weeks of receiving the application. This is very important because the application status can be checked using the confirmation number
Before accepting a job offer, it is good to see if they are E-verified. Because only these E-verified companies can apply for h1b visa starting from
OPT extension. However, the company does not need to be E-verified for the initial 12 months OPT.

Happy Job Hunting!
The first step in getting a job in the USA is to apply for OPD. Now it’s time to look for a job. I would like to shed light on this in today’s episode
Needless to say, going through this second step is much more challenging than the first step.
The main reason for this is not that America’s job market is bad.
The real reason is the reluctance of most companies to hire international students.
I have seen from my own experience that many times even after having comparatively more qualifications,
They give more priority to the people of their country than to a foreigner.
This may seem unfair at first glance, but if you look at it from a company perspective, the reason is easy to understand.
If you want to hire a foreigner, a company has to take some extra trouble, which no one wants to take except the big companies.
Besides, there are jobs for which security clearance is required. For which it is compulsory to be an American citizen. That’s why it is better to find out a little about the company when applying for a job
How to find a job
There are three ways to find a job
1. Through networking.
2. Apply directly online.
3.Through consulting firm stuffing/agency.
First comes networking
In some places like Bangladesh, people still get jobs without much evaluation. America doesn’t go for that.
Here you can get a job interview with reference.
Usually the rest of the time you have to qualify, but that’s not to say that it’s less important. Because big companies can have up to a few hundred candidates for a post, and most of them never get a chance to interview with the hiring manager.
Many are left out of the automated application selection because they do not have the correct keyword in their resume/cv.
The rest of his fate was decided after an initial interview with the recruits.
So the reference is very important to get through this initial step and the best way to get it is networking.
The best person to give a reference to is someone who knows you well and can be your professor, your research colleague, your University alumni (your own country, and another country). But there are ways to do networking, for example, if you are not looking for a research-related job, Research gate can be a good platform for you.
But the easiest and most effective place for networking is LinkedIn. Suppose you apply to a company.
The first thing to find out is whether you have any of your university alumni in the company.
If you don’t find it through the link, contact some people of the company, show them your resume. If they can make a good impression, they may agree to refer you for a post.
There is no problem even if you do not get any references.
At least you can get an idea about Company Culture, Hiring
A strategy that may help shortly.
Now let’s talk about direct application. Networking is a time-consuming affair and in many cases, it is not possible to do so. In this case, there is no option to apply directly to the job.
It can be through the company’s web link like LinkedIn or an app.
But I warn you that the success rate of applying directly is very low.
Maybe you can get a reply from 10 to 15 by applying to one hundred positions.
Here are some strategies that can increase your response rate
Such as arranging your blog, LinkedIn profile, or website, etc. But the most important thing is a good Resume and cover letter.
Features of a good resume and cover letter
1. Should be One page
2. Specifically Targeted for that Job (Most important!)
3. Should Include Summary, List of Core Competencies and Keywords
Remember, Resume and Cover
A letter is not the same. They
should relate to one another, but
their goal is different. While
a resume gives an overview of your
qualifications, your cover letter
gives details.
Finally, you can get a job through any consultancy firm or staffing agency.
I do not have much experience in this field but in most cases, these firms get a certain amount of money in exchange for giving jobs.
Particularly, various Indian firms take 30% to 40% of your monthly salary in exchange for a job.
They resort to fake documents and other lies to get a job so it is better not to go to them.
Find them here http://desiopt.com/
Where to look for a job:
Find any subject job here
1. Indeed
2.Monster
3.LinkedIn
4.Glassdoor (a best informative site about salary)
5.Career Builder
You can find only Engineering/Technology related job here
1. Engineer jobs
2. Dice
4. hire engineering
To find a government job in America
USAJobs
You can learn about various tips, tricks, and strategies related to jobs and interviews.
1.The Muse
2. Mentat
But all in all, the best site I’ve ever seen is LinkedIn. a separate post is needed about how to use LinkedIn to get a job. So I did not go here in that context, you can find out some of my tips by Google
Finally some tips of my own
1. It is necessary to have a neat and informative LinkedIn profile (With Professional Photo)
2. It is good to be able to get references but it is not a problem if you can’t. You can apply in 200 places but it would not be better to give the same Resume everywhere. Do it in 50 places but resume so that the job is specific.
3. It is better not to give any false information while applying. You will be caught at some stage.
4. If you have profiles on different websites, they will send you job news based on qualifications. For those who do not have enough time to find a job, I will talk about this in the next part of the work.
Needless to say, all of this is written from my own experience, so if anyone has any comments or suggestions, please let me know in the comments.
