Wednesday November 21st wrote 2311 words for a new short story project I'm calling Mnemosyne, but for tagging purposes I'll be calling it "Memory". It's not a terribly original idea, I must confess. It's inspired by The Notebook (a movie which, yes, does make me cry) but they differ in many ways. The only real similarity is "old woman with Alzheimer's in a nursing home is visited by another old person and they chat and become friends and then old woman remembers this other old person is her spouse and it's very emotional".
This is just a short story so it won't do the whole "recount their lives together" thing that the titular notebook does. It is grounded solely in the present, and really works on the relationship development between the two characters as they are now. That's very important. It's not a frame story. It really does just focus on these two old women getting to know each other, and how things change once one of them realizes that their relationship is completely different from what she originally thought. The ending is also quite different. It was going to follow something similar to The Notebook where the old woman passes away after remembering her wife, in a sort of "I got to see you one last time" way, but that's too sad for what I wanted this story to be. So instead she forgets again, and then it just jumps right back to the beginning and the cycle starts again. Because they can't be apart from each other. Yes yes, very sappy.
The idea really just hit me like a truck today, and I have no idea why. I think I needed something new to refresh my mind. I've been working on Thorns non-stop for almost two months, and I'm a little burnt out. Need to think about something else for a little bit to give my brain a break. This short story is perfect for that.

Yo, so this is less so a specific ask and more me having the need to verbalize some stuff with the option of getting input from someone with a more knowledgable perspective. I have been thinking a fair bit about Judaism and dabbling with the idea of converting to it. I don’t think it’s something for me, but I am tentatively thinking about the option.
The thing is. I assume you’re familiar with the difference between hard magic and soft magic systems in writing. (If not, the tldr is hard magic is defined with hard rules and limitations and soft magic is more ambiguous and fluid.) And I think my basic thing is that I am very open to what you could call soft spirituality and faith, but unable to jell with any hard beliefs.
For example I can never get myself to really entertain the idea of an afterlife being set up in a very specific way with specific rules and where you know what is happening and why. But I saw that tweet that went around a while ago that was like “I hope that death is like being a child at a party and falling asleep, so somebody carries you to bed and I hope when I die I can still hear the laughter from the other room” and that fucked me up beyond words.
I have gone through a couple religions and beliefs over my life and never found a framework that really fit with me, but in the past couple of years I have developed a lot and realized I have a yearning for spiritual things. My current view could probably best be described as a pantheist leaning agnostic enamored with the idea of belief and experience shaping purpose and giving structure
sort of. As well as the power of belief and to change the way you see the world for the better. It’s hard to explain specifically the angle I like.
The reason I am caught up on Judaism rn is that in a lot of ways it seems to be based around a lot of soft spirituality. I am absolutely in love with the idea that god, or the divine, or spirit, whatever one may call it is not something concrete, not one existence, but more of a force like the laws of physics, or the rules of math. I adore the idea of little rituals and rules to bring god into your life and through that connecting you to culture and history and people and community and spirituality. I love the idea you talked about some time in the past of the four kinds of jews, based on studying the scriptures and following the rules, and that even those who do neither are still a vital part of the jewish people and are needed for it to be whole. There’s so many little details that appeal to me so strongly, because they’re exactly the kind of stuff I am yearning for.
But I feel like the hard aspects keep me away. I love the idea of rules and rituals to shape your life, but I don’t think I could follow the rules of Judaism, because having a preset set of rules feels too hard for me. Similarly I love the idea of studying the texts and the never ending pursuit of decifering the meaning and arguing about it, but I don’t think I could get interested in ever doing it, because having a specific text to do it with is too hard.
So I feel very conflicted, because the way Judaism feels to me from the outside, it shows me both the soft aspects of spirituality I absolutely adore and yearn for, and at the same time the hard aspects that keep me away from religion. And they feel very connected and interwoven.
And it feels like especially as a convert being a part of it is connected with a huge amount of the hard aspects and a lot of work that goes into those. I’d have to first figure out if there is even any jewish denominations (is that the right word?) near where I live that don’t do circumcision and that aren’t on the conservative side (I have no idea how the situation is where I live) and then do all the studies and the entire process involved in converting (which I admittedly don’t know very much about either, so I might be overstating this) to be part of something I would immediately take a half step away from because I’m only really interested in the ideas behind the actual elements of it and not as much the elements themselves if that makes sense?
I guess this is pretty rambly, but maybe you have some input, or something smart to say and if not I hope I’m not coming across as this guy right now:
Tumblr media
I think that in the process of writing this ask, you seem to have figured out that this isn't for you right now. If you get to a point where all of those things aren't standing in your way but are a to-do list, that will be when you know it's for you.
And they're generally called movements, not denominations.

This is actually kinda an interesting example of the weird tokenism that's currently being peddled in Hollywood for some time. You have a story where you actually have an under-represented group, but because it's the wrong kind we're just going to swap them so that you can visually see the difference, and so it fits our worldview in a completely different part of the world.
Let' me switch the sides for a second: Does Hollywood actually think that poc want to have the "leftover" roles from white characters? Do they honestly think that pocs feel more represented when being put into a story that didn't actually include them and doesn't feature their cultures and heritages, and doesn't even acknowledge them as a poc character in a white story? Do they honestly think that poc people want a white story, by a white author to represent them? That poc want to be stand ins for fantasy racism against fantasy creatures? This story features hate against magical creatures like elves... how about we just add in regular old racism again poc instead? As if the rule is that if there's racism, then pocs have to be victims of it, even if the story tells about fantastical racism. Why can't Poc simply exist in a story where they aren't victims of racism?
Especially if it ends up being such a waste of time and money like what Witcher ended up being, especially the "Origin" spin-off, made by people who hated the source material, and who hated and ousted on the one singular man who not only wanted to respect the source material, but even fought to have vital parts of the story respected until he couldn't anymore. Then they blame "We thought our audience were brainless mongrels so we didn't want to make it too complicated for their little stupid brains." Great, not only did you ruin one of the few stories that was by a Polish-Slav about Slavic and Polish folklore which already doesn't have much of a foothold, and wasn't the typical anti-Slavic Hollywood + "everything is Russia" storyline, but you also insulted the intelligence of your audiences, didn't actually give good rep to pocs, and you even managed to shit on the value of representing actual poc stories once again by giving them scraps.
I've also noticed this has started the stupid trend between fans, because instead of pointing out how stupid Hollywood is, and noticing it's Hollywood doing this shit, I see poc making fun that token-trend with comments "If a poc movie for pocs is made, by pocs and written by pocs, don't forget the token white character." Yeah, exactly we all see the problem don't we? That's why everyone clowns on it, but it's like people just kinda forget how stupid this trend is when it actually comes to throwing the hard critics at Hollywood. Where are the stories for the people who want to be represented as their own figures and stories for once? Without having a stupid token character because Hollywood thinks people are too dumb to identify or root for a character who doesn't look like them. We don't need useless token characters, we need stories that are made FOR the people, written for them, with care.
We want poc stories. We want black stories. Asian. Latine. Indigenous. Hell even Slavic. Whatever! Written by them for them, we want to see stories that can just BE these stories without the need for token characters awkwardly forced in. Tell me a story where the identity of the characters is respected and fully realized! Who needs a token character when you have actually stories where these characters actually get their stories told instead of being a footnote or a throwaway line? I want to watch a big blockbuster movie who's source was written by eg a black woman, about her culture, shaped by her experiences, and with black actors who are playing roles that were always for them. I don't want another "Hey this book was written by a white person, how about we just turn some random white characters poc and call it a day. Who cares if the author doesn't know how to write a poc experience, they'll just eat it anyway." I'm not saying that a person can't write about characters of a different ethnicity not their own either, especially if they actually do research and ask people of that ethnicity or find good resources, etc! Write what you want, put effort into it and your heart.
But we first need to set a precedents for authors to be able to write for themselves and their experiences tied to their identity, to get a voice and be featured above constantly using stories that weren't made for it. If the story was made for Polish slavs, then make it a story for polish slavs. If you want a high fantasy story with actual poc characters that was already part of the story, then go and find one of the thousands of books by various poc ethnicities that already cover that!
Bullshit excuses by Hollywood that poc stories don't sell are a fucking sham. The old fucks at the top just hate the idea of actually doing something for actual diversity, by giving poc people a chance to see their own stories on screen that they themselves have written.

Way past exhausted
Yeah I wish that I could get more sleep cuz I know that right now if I could just let me give myself a little bit it would probably would work some wonders but I don't think that you know for me just exactly how hard it is
I feel like I'm running on fumes most of the time just to keep this body, yeah just to keep on functioning
I'm kinda mad in a way that this is only vessel that I have and that I ever will and I have no spares for it so I can't just up and abandon it
I would probably would never be able to even keep it working without a schedule
Cuz if I had maybe just took a nap or ended up wanting to go to bed early I could miss the deadline to give it all the fluids, artificial foods and medicines that are now apart of my everyday regimen to make sure that I don't end up in even worse shape than this
And trust me I would protest but hey, god made the rules I didn't
So now all I have to do is just keep on figuring out how to live my life this way
So I'll stay up just to make sure that I take my heart medication just so I don't wake up a dehydrated tachycardic mess
And then maybe my nurse won't look at me so sad when she sees my bad vitals in the morning and then looks back at me to smile and say "don't worry it's okay, we'll just try again and hopefully it might be better the next day"
One thing that I hate most about having my chronic illness is that through every part of it I feel everything
Even right now and I know that I must also be a little extra tired and weak because I know that overnight that I didn't get to but I should've let my immune system do what every night it's supposed to do
I didn't get to give it the little extra rest that it really needs to keep on going like this and repair itself and keep me straight up so I can do the things I'm supposed to do
But it feels like I really have little choice cuz I feel way worse when I fall asleep a little bit earlier at the time when I'm actually feeling like I want to and then I'll have hours go by and I forget that I'm going without the stuff I'm supposed to take and then it makes all of my problems even worse
So yeah it gets kinda frustrating when it's like "damned if you do, damned if you don't"
I have alot of up and down, on and off days
I guess there's never gonna be this whole "normal functioning system" that's gonna completely perfect for me to hold my expectations to and it's kinda fucked that even probably if there is a way that I somehow do I can't really expect perfection when my body isn't even all working perfectly too
So I guess for now I might take the slight insomnia if it means that maybe for a few hours until I have to take all my things again I can pretend that I'm almost actually "normal" when I get to my baseline again before I get back to the same way I was that crushes all my hopes for that and makes me feel like I may break again
Or need to go to a hospital
But that's just how it goes health is a luxury and not everything is easy for everyone
It just sometimes seems like it is sometimes for the certain people who like to talk about things to you cuz they don't actually know what it's like to live life inside your body
Cuz it seems like people always forget to remember that experiences are different so don't expect everyone what's your face the same easiness or difficulty to live life the same way that you do
And I know that explain that to everyone isn't always easy cuz you can always make people listen and understand
But really all they need to know is we're both different you're not me and I'm not you
Cuz I really get that feeling like you're wasting your time getting tired trying to overexplain yourself about something sucks
You know I think that's why also I feel like sometimes I choose just not to talk to people about my moments when I'm in pain or when I feel like I might be suffering and I'll at times just stay silent but I also feel like I shouldn't have to though
It shouldn't have to matter what you're talking about, you talking about how you're feeling while you're going through what you're going through is valid
I feel just like that's how some of alot of us feel when we're going through these things and we don't feel like we're being heard or we're dismissed and I think that that's why by now I can see why the most of us right now just feel like we're way past exhausted

Mirabel's Super Secret Adventure
Movie AU
Chapter Preview: “-but seriously, you know everything is going to be alright,” Tía Leandra was saying to Tïo Bruno, a pretty normal exchange between the two. One Mirabel had heard a thousand times and was prepared to ignore if not for what Tío Bruno said next.
Prologue Next Masterlist
Slipping Through the...
“Abuela, I found her,” Gabriel called, and Mirabel groaned. She was so close.
Mirabel stood just two feet shy of Antonio’s new door, the quiet sanctuary of Casita’s abandoned courtyard tantalizingly close.
Just over ten years ago, Mirabel had her own gift ceremony, and instead of receiving a gift, she had become the miracle’s back up plan. Which was fine, great even, a huge honor. Sure, it would have been way cooler to shape shift, or make flowers out of thin air, but hey! She was serving a very important role in the family just by existing, and that was
 well, it definitely wasn’t nothing.
She was fine, more than fine. Happy, really.
However.
“Oh come on Gabe, I’m fifteen, I don’t need a babysitter,” Mirabel groused, trying to duck around her older cousin.
“I know you don’t,” Gabriel shrugged, blocking her escape efforts despite his words, “but you’re important, especially on nights like this.”
Mirabel rolled her eyes and groaned, “I already did my part, I helped Antonio get to the door, now can I just-.”
Go mope in peace. That’s what she wanted to say. Because yes, she was really glad the miracle had picked her for something so important. And she was proud of herself and the vital role she played in the last three gift ceremonies. But just thinking of all the gifts given since her own ceremony-, Antonio got to talk to animals, Octavia could shape the earth however she wanted, and Mirabel didn’t even know how to describe Amada’s gift other than amazing!
And what did Mirabel get?
The magic equivalent of being a spare tire.
Tío Bruno was always saying how important it was to “let your feelings flow”, and that was exactly what Mirabel wanted to do. She wanted to let her feelings flow so they could flow right out of her.
In private. As in, not at the party.
She might have been a little jealous of Antonio’s awesome gift, but she was also really happy for him, and wanted him to have his night. She didn’t want to steal the attention away from him.
“You did, and you know Abuela is going to want to include you in the toast tonight, it’s basically a part of the tradition,” Gabriel shrugged.
It started with Amada, Bruno and Leandra’s second child. She was a year younger than Mirabel, and had a strict sense of right and wrong. Everything had to be fair, in Amada’s eyes, and Mirabel not getting a cool gift wasn’t fair. So, Amada had tried to refuse her gift until Mirabel got one too.
In hindsight, it was hugely flattering, one of the nicest things anyone had ever done for her. At the time, however, it was just dragging out a painful experience Mirabel had wanted to get over with.
So, she had encouraged Amada to take the gift, even giving her a few (mostly gentle) shoves towards the door. When she finally touched it, Amada’s eyes had glowed and she’d looked at Mirabel then looked around the party, she had taken off her shoe and tossed it, setting off a chain reaction that had resulted in Mirabel holding a plate of her favorite desserts. Nobody was sure exactly what to call Amada’s gift, but she had always described it as being able to see the dominos of the universe.
“Camilo’s right,” Mirabel grumbled in the here and now, “you are such a stick in the mud.”
“Thank you!” Gabriel smiled at her. She glared back at him.
Gabriel was the eldest of Tío Bruno’s kids, and the only one who remembered life before becoming a Madrigal. Granted, what he remembered was pretty vague, since he was four when he joined the family, but it was generally understood that the more vague his memories, the better.
Gabriel’s birth father was not a good man, one of the few to be banished from Encanto for committing a violent crime. Rumor had it that the reason Gabriel’s abuelo brought him and Amada to Encanto was because Gabriel’s birth father killed Amada’s other parents, and would have killed her if Gabriel hadn’t gotten help.
He was just over a year younger than Luisa, and had only been with the family for six months when he turned five. As such, his gift ceremony had come as a surprise to everybody. One minute they were having a very quiet birthday party fit for a shy little boy, the next a door had appeared and Abuela was rushing to grab the candle.
“Look, just, come get me for the toast,” Mirabel laced her fingers together and put them under her chin, “please. I just want a few minutes away from the party.”
Gabriel pressed his lips together, looking over her shoulder, probably at Abuela. It seemed like Abuela always had at least one eye on Mirabel. Because god forbid the miracle’s back up plan got a paper cut.
“How about we both go,” Gabriel eventually said, offering up a compromise that also served as a convenient excuse for him to take a break from the party, “we can take a walk, decompress. You can vent.”
“Tempting, but no,” Mirabel crossed her arms, “the last time I went anywhere with you after dark your fan club showed up and almost crushed me to death trying to get to you.”
Gabriel flinched and Mirabel felt a little bad. Supposedly, Gabriel’s birth father had been a bit of a womanizer, and as such Gabriel was determined to be the opposite. He had regularly declared that he wouldn’t date until he thought he may have found the one. Unfortunately for him, male Madrigals were few and far between, and there were plenty of women in the village for whom the name was a prize worth any battle.
Things were getting a little easier for him ever since Camilo’s growth spurt, but they still weren’t great.
“Come on, I’m fifteen, I think I can handle myself in my own house,” Mirabel insisted, pushing past the guilt, “Casita will have my back, right Casita?”
Casita clattered the floor tiles in an affirmative.
Gabriel pressed his lips together, then sighed, nodding, “If Abuela asks, you told me you were going to the restroom.”
“You got it,” Mirabel flashed him a thumbs up.
“Be back by nine,” Gabriel called after her, “the toast is at fifteen past.”
“Yeah-huh,” she agreed, walking as quickly as she could out of Antonio’s new room.
Casita’s courtyard was empty, the whole village already exploring the newly installed mini rain forest. She took a few deep breaths, letting her shoulders drop a little as she enjoyed a few seconds of self pity.
She was fine, really, just a tiny bit jealous. That’s all. It was normal to be a little jealous, her Má sometimes told Tía Pepa she wished they could trade. Gift envy was a perfectly normal and valid reason for Mirabel to be just the tiniest bit bummed.
She was otherwise completely fine.
Slowly, quietly, looking up at the night sky, Mirabel plodded down the stairs.
It was tempting to hide in the nursery, but everybody would know to look for her there. And Gabriel would know to check Tío Bruno’s story telling tent. Amada and Octavia, both fellow victims of Gabriel’s mollycoddling, had said she could hide in either of their rooms if she wanted, but she didn’t want to have to worry about them finding her and trying to cheer her up.
Ironically, if Antonio’s room wasn’t currently being used for a party, it would be the perfect place to hide out for a few minutes of privacy.
She’d hide out back in the herb garden, she decided. Only her Má or one of her Tías would think to find her there.
Before she got more than two steps away from the stairs, she heard a familiar raspy chuckle and startled, whipping around to find the source. Thankfully, when she found Tío Bruno standing in the kitchen doorway with Tía Leandra, it didn’t look like either had noticed her. She carefully tiptoed under the stairs Casita had made for the party, so she’d be shielded by the shadows.
“-but seriously, you know everything is going to be alright,” Tía Leandra was saying to Tïo Bruno, a pretty normal exchange between the two. One Mirabel had heard a thousand times and was prepared to ignore if not for what Tío Bruno said next.
“I-, mí reina, you know I want to agree with you, but it’s just-. Look, if our fate really was all up to Mirabel I’d be fine, b-but you can’t really be at the center of something unless there’s something to be the center of, right? It’s all that something that worries me,” Tío Bruno paused to sigh as if the weight of the world was dragging him down, shaking his head, “I can’t help but wonder if-, maybe we should have-, I don’t know. Mirabel has grown into such a mature, kind young woman, and she knows how much we love her. I thought that would mean-, I-I thought that would fix things, but it hasn’t. The cracks are spreading.”
“That’s-, we’ll figure it out,” she was clearly doing her best to look optimistic.
“We might not be able to keep them secret for much longer. The other day one got into Luisa’s room.”
“Well, that makes sense, Mirabel looks about the same age as she did in your vision, whatever is happening, it’s probably about to-,” Tía Leandra cut herself off, then said, “we knew this day would come.”
“I was sort of hoping the cracks would be, you know, a metaphor,” he shrugged, “not real.”
“Have you shown them to Octavia? I know we said we wouldn’t draw any of the kids into this, but if everybody is about to find out about them anyways,” she took his hands in hers, “maybe we start pulling in some more back up. Try more solutions. Control the spread of information.”
Tío Bruno gave a sort of half nod to show he was thinking about it, but otherwise didn’t respond. Eventually he sighed through his nose and picked up her hands, kissing the back of first her right, then her left.
“Come on, let’s go check in so Má doesn’t realize we’re avoiding the party,” Tío Bruno said, smiling ruefully, “we can talk about this after Isabela’s engagement tomorrow.”
“Hm, I still think we should say something,” Tía Leandra said, allowing herself to be led up the stairs.
“I talked to Dolores, and Isabela, they’re both determined to stay the course, they don’t want to rock the boat,” he said, “th-that’s actually why I want to wait. I have a new theory about what’s causing the cracks, I want to see if tomorrow does anything.”
“But what about-?”
“We can say something after,” he reassured her, “b-but you know, eventually we gotta trust the kids to take care of themselves.”
“Easier said than done. Especially when they’re being stupid.”
“Tell me about it.”
And then their voices were swallowed up by the low cacophony of the party.
Mirabel stood there in the shadow of the stairs for a really long time, trying to make sense of what she’d just heard.
“Cracks?” she whispered, then frowned down at the tile beneath her feet, “Casita, do you know what they’re talking about.”
Casita didn’t respond, which was as good a confirmation as Mirabel could ask for. If Casita didn’t know what was happening, she would have received a confused clatter.
“Casita?”
Casita sheepishly shuffled the tiles around.
“Show me.”
There was a moment's hesitation.
“Show me,” she insisted sternly.
Casita wiggled first the tiles, then the floorboards on the stairs, one by one to lead her back up to the second story. She was careful while sneaking past the party and kept looking over her shoulder as she followed Casita’s lead.
The trail stopped abruptly under a large painting on the wall, one Mirabel had never paid much mind to. She studied it closely, not seeing any signs of cracks.
Maybe they were under the picture?
She carefully put her hands on one side and tried to move the painting without dislodging it from whatever was used to hang it, but the painting swung out like a door. Instead of finding cracks, she found a gaping hole, leading to a thin passageway disappearing into the dark.
Mirabel gulped and looked around, before carefully climbing through the hole. She closed the painting behind her and waited for her eyes to adjust.
As soon as she could see where she was going she started walking.
The passageway was narrow, and dusty, but Mirabel could see signs that Bruno had been there. There was salt all over the floor, and wild rats cuddled up in little hammocks like the ones Tío Bruno’s pet rats had. Tía Leandra must have been there too, because hanging on the walls every few feet was a bouquet of dried lavender to keep the air from growing stale.
The little touches kept Mirabel’s heart from beating out of her chest. Sure, she may have been wandering alone through a dark, secret, passage in the walls, but it was clearly a dark, secret, passage that Tío Bruno traversed regularly.
Eventually, she even started to enjoy the journey. It was quiet, everything smelled like lavender, and nobody was popping out of the woodwork to tell her to watch her step, or be careful of splinters.
Mirabel kept her eyes on the walls, looking for cracks. She didn’t find any.
However she did find another giant hole, this one was in the ground and seemed to lead down into an endless abyss. She stared at it.
TĂo Bruno went running with Luisa every morning, and Luisa was always saying how acrobatic he was. So, presumably, TĂo Bruno could probably use those boards there and there to hop across. And TĂa Leandra regularly lifted weights with Luisa and TĂo FĂ©lix (although they couldn’t lift nearly as much as Luisa could), so if TĂo Bruno put that ladder over there on those brackets screwed into the wall, TĂa Leandra could probably use it like monkey bars to walk herself across.
Mirabel may have been able to use the ladder like monkey bars too, maybe. Unfortunately, the ladder was on the other side of the hole, so she would never know.
She stared down into the misty abyss contemplatively.
How deep could it be? Realistically? Casita may have been a magic house, but it didn’t make sense to assume the whole house was floating over a giant, bottomless, void. This was probably just a sink hole of some kind. So, it was possible that Mirabel could just hop down, walk across, and climb back up the other side.
Although it was entirely possible that Casita, being a magic house, was indeed floating over an endless void.
She tapped her toes, debating whether or not she wanted to risk it.
Glancing up at the ladder, she suddenly had an idea. That was hardly the only ladder in the house. She could grab a ladder, and try putting it in the hole. If it hit ground she would just climb down, then back up the other side. If it didn’t, she could probably use it as a bridge, just as long as she was careful.
Mind made up, she turned and started the journey back the way she came. She had to struggle not to hum a cheerful tune as she went.
It was just, ever since her gift ceremony Mirabel wasn’t allowed to do anything by herself. She couldn’t lift anything over five pounds without Abuela calling for Luisa, she couldn’t wander into town without one of her cousins being sent as a chaperone, she even had to “rescue” then hide her good fabric scissors just so she could use them without getting a lecture about scissor safety for the thousandth time.
It was always, “You didn’t have to strain yourself” and “Why don’t you relax and let somebody else take care of that” and “Be careful Mirabel”. She loved her Abuela, and she loved spending time with her sister and cousins, but for the love of god, she felt like she was fifteen going on five.
But not this time! This time Mirabel was going to climb around in the walls and discover these secret cracks without anyone else’s help.
With that in mind, Mirabel cracked the painting open a smidge and checked for witnesses before crawling out of her newfound secret tunnel. She dusted herself off and looked around, making extra sure nobody had seen her.
Good.
Mirabel happily trotted towards the stairs, but was brought up short when the grandfather clock struck nine.
Oh, right, the toast.
Pressing her lips together, Mirabel strongly considered ignoring the clock and going right back into the hole in the wall. But if Abuela noticed Mirabel was missing, she’d ask Dolores to find her, and if that happened Mirabel would lose this secret adventure just as soon as she’d found it.
With a sigh, Mirabel vowed to grab the ladder just as soon as everybody was in bed. She took a few deep breaths, put on her happy face, and returned to the crowd.
Gabriel found her in minutes, “Doing better?”
“Yep,” she said, “just needed a breather.”
“That’s good, I was a little worried ab-.”
“When are you not,” Camilo interrupted, suddenly appearing on Gabriel’s other side with a plate of food, “hey Mirabel, Abuela was looking for you.”
Mirabel groaned.
“So, because I am wonderful and amazing, I pretended to be you and did a lap around the party,” Camilo smirked.
Mirabel felt her whole face light up.
“Just figured you’d wanna know, you talked to Señora Matisse about the new cake her bakery is selling, you talked to my TĂo FelĂpe about how much funnier than him I am, and you talked to Isabela about that weird face Mariano makes whenever somebody brings up snakes.”
Mirabel frowned again, “So, basically, the only person you actually bothered fooling was Señora Matisse?”
“Meh, it’s not like Tío Felípe or Isa are going to rat me out,” Camilo shrugged, “Abuela saw you chatting with people at the party, that’s what matters, right?”
“Yeah, I guess,” she admitted.
“So, you owe me one,” he grinned.
Mirabel sighed but couldn’t deny, “Sí, gracias Camilo, I owe you one.”
“I’ll collect on your debt later,” he turned his smirk on Gabriel, who was watching this whole exchange with a slight disapproving frown, “for now the joy of annoying you is the only payment I need.”
“Abuela just wants to keep Mirabel safe,” Gabriel said, always quick to defend their grandmother, “you shouldn’t trick her like that.”
“Alright, then tell her, tell her it was me she saw, not Mirabel,” Camilo responded blithely.
Gabriel frowned at him. Camilo waited, his grin turning knowing as the seconds ticked by and Gabe wasn’t running off to tattle. Gabriel would never purposefully get one of his cousins in trouble, even if he didn’t agree with what they were doing. Eventually Camilo nodded, winked at Mirabel, and walked away, stuffing a cookie into his mouth.
Mirabel couldn’t help but grin at his back.
“I know she’s a little
extreme about it,” Gabriel sighed, “but she’s just trying to keep you and the family safe. We can’t lose our miracle-.”
Mirabel rolled her eyes and opened her mouth to argue.
“-and we definitely can’t lose you,” Gabriel was looking at her with that soft little smile, the one he had inherited from Tío Bruno, “don’t forget, you’re not special because the miracle chose you, the miracle chose you because you’re special.”
All of the fight left her in an instant. Gabriel always managed to do this, he didn’t win arguments by yelling or fighting dirty, he won arguments by refusing to fight. He was the very epitome of the phrase “kill them with kindness”.
Suddenly, Mirabel felt guilty for all the mental complaining she’d done about Abuela, and her cousin. They may have been a bit suffocating, but they were coming from a place of love.
What right did Mirabel have to begrudge them that.
Even worse than feeling guilty, she was suddenly tempted to tell Gabriel about the cracks. To give up her secret adventure for their sakes. She knew if either one found out what she was planning, they’d have a heart attack.
Fortunately, before she could, a ringing sound cut through the party. Abuela was lightly tapping a fork against a glass. It was time for the toast.
“Thank you Gabe,” Mirabel said, even as she allowed herself to be led to Abuela’s side, “I know you guys are coming from a place of love. I just-, I just feel-.”
“Mirabel, come, come,” Abuela called out, ending the conversation, and ushering Mirabel over to stand with Antonio. Antonio grinned up at her, a toucan on his little shoulder, his eyes big and brown and full of love.
Suddenly, everything seemed just a little bit better.
“Hey Tonito,” she greeted him, “are you having a good party?”
“Sí, thank you,” Antonio whispered, wrapping himself around her hand like he had on the way up to his door.
“Always,” Mirabel whispered back. Just loud enough so he could hear her over Abuela’s speech.
She tuned Abuela out as much as she could, and just smiled down at her youngest cousin for a little. He was a sweet kid, and she would kind of miss having him in the nursery with her.
She knew everybody had been sort of expecting Mirabel to help him to his door somehow, but she hadn’t planned to do it. Honestly, she had been tempted to refuse, though she couldn’t quite put why into words.
But Mirabel couldn’t do that to Antonio. If she was honest, she wouldn’t be able to do it to anyone in the family. Not even Isabela. She loved her family too much.
All the same, Mirabel guiding Antonio to his door wasn’t supposed to be a part of the ceremony. Just like Mirabel helping Octavia hobble to her door after she twisted her ankle in her rush to get up the stairs wasn’t supposed to be a part of the ceremony. And her giving Amada permission to accept a gift wasn’t supposed to be a part of the ceremony.
But it was. Something Abuela made sure to mention.
“And let’s not forget, a special thank you to Mirabel, for once again being there for your cousins,” Abuela smiled at her looking proud as ever, “you have once again demonstrated that the gifts our miracle has given come from kindness, sacrifice, and family. You have become a vital part of the ceremony. And who knows, maybe you’ll be leading Isabela’s child to their door next.”
Abuela paused for the village to chuckle as she sent a conspiratorial grin at Señora Guzman. Mirabel couldn’t help but glance at Isabela, expecting to receive a cool, haughty smile that barely masked Isabela’s disdain.
Instead she saw it, her eyes drawn to a subtle motion on the ground. A crack. A singular, spindly crack, forming in the wooden dance floor under Isabela’s feet.
Mirabel looked up at Isabela’s face, but she hadn’t noticed the crack, she was smiling sweetly at Mariano. And he was smiling charmingly back at her. The perfect couple.
Nobody had noticed the crack. Time seemed to slow down as Mirabel searched the faces of the crowd but everybody was smiling, and laughing.
Everybody but Dolores.
Of course! Dolores could probably hear the cracks, and Bruno and Leandra discussing them. So why hadn’t Dolores mentioned any-.
“So!” Abuela called, snapping Mirabel back to attention, “A toast to Mirabel. Thank you Mirabel.”
There were many calls of “Salud” as everybody raised their glasses.
“And of course, happy birthday Antonio! We know you’ll make us proud!”
As one the village shouted and cheered for Antonio and he shrunk ever closer to Mirabel’s side, watching the crowd with wide eyes. Everybody threw their drink back, completing the toast, and the music picked back up.
“Ay, mijo, mĂ hombrecito,” TĂo Pepa called, running to Antonio with TĂo FĂ©lix on her heels. Only once his mother was close enough for Antonio to latch onto did he let go of Mirabel’s hand. The toucan squawked as its perch was swooped up into Pepa’s arms.
“Gracias Mirabel, not just for guiding him to the door, but for letting him hide behind you,” TĂo FĂ©lix chuckled quietly, giving her a warm smile and a soft pat on the shoulder before he joined Pepa in hugging their son. Mirabel smiled back, murmuring a platitude that not even she was paying attention to.
With Antonio detached and Abuela busy playing hostess, Mirabel figured she had thirty seconds before Gabriel would find her and start hovering again. So she quickly rushed over to where Isabela had been standing to inspect the crack.
But it was gone.
A/N: Just added the links on Wednesday (09/27) so if somebody wants to test them out, let me know if they don't work. I'm being a little lazy about it.

The Unsung Heroes Behind Tesla's Self Driving Cars
Learn about the unsung heroes behind Tesla's self-driving cars - the data analysts and data scientists responsible for data annotation. Dive into the world of data science and how it plays a crucial role in advancing autonomous vehicles. You know, when we think about the future of driving, we often picture sleek cars gliding silently down the road, passengers relaxed, maybe even reading a book or scrolling through their phones. That’s the dream, right? But behind that dream is a whole world of complex technology, data, and, surprisingly, a job that’s becoming increasingly vital: the data annotation specialist for autonomous vehicles, like those at Tesla. Let’s break it down. Imagine you’re sitting in a car, and it’s doing all the driving for you. Sounds incredible, but for that to happen, the car needs to understand its environment perfectly. It’s not just about recognizing other vehicles; it’s about understanding pedestrians, cyclists, traffic signals, road conditions—everything! That’s where data annotation comes in. It’s the backbone of machine learning, the process that teaches these systems how to interpret the world around them. Now, you might be wondering, what exactly does a data annotation specialist do? Picture yourself watching hours of video footage from Tesla’s cameras, which are capturing real-time driving scenarios. Your job is to label everything you see. That means tagging cars, people, animals, and even road signs. You’re basically teaching the car what to look for and how to react. It’s like being a digital teacher for machines, ensuring they learn from real-life situations so they can make safe decisions when it’s time to hit the road on their own. But here’s the kicker: this isn’t just a monotonous task. It’s engaging and requires a keen eye. You need to be detail-oriented and able to think critically about what you’re seeing. For instance, if a pedestrian suddenly steps off the curb, how should the car react? You’re not just labeling; you’re considering the implications of every scenario. You’re part of a team that’s literally shaping the future of driving, one frame at a time. And let’s talk about the skills you need. You don’t have to be a tech whiz, but you definitely need to be comfortable with technology. Many companies, like Tesla, are looking for people who are adaptable and can learn quickly. You might be working with different software and tools, analyzing data, and providing insights on how to improve the algorithms. It’s a role that requires collaboration, as you’ll often be working with engineers and data scientists to ensure the annotations are accurate and useful. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Is this job for me?” Well, if you’re someone who enjoys problem-solving, has a passion for technology, and is excited about the future of transportation, this could be a perfect fit. Plus, think about the impact you’ll have. You’re contributing to a safer driving experience for everyone. The work you do could help prevent accidents and save lives. That’s pretty powerful, right? And let’s not forget the flexibility that comes with many of these positions. With remote work on the rise, you might find yourself doing this job from the comfort of your own home. Imagine sipping your coffee while you help develop the next generation of self-driving cars. It’s a unique opportunity, blending the tech world with a hands-on approach to real-world challenges. So, if you’re intrigued by the idea of being part of this technological revolution, consider looking into data annotation roles. Dive into the world of autonomous vehicles, and who knows? You might just find yourself at the forefront of a movement that’s changing how we think about transportation. The future is here, and it’s driven by data, innovation, and a whole lot of passionate individuals ready to make a difference. So, buckle up; it’s going to be an exciting ride!

Five Essential Checks Before Booking a Taxi in Perth
Planning to book a taxi in Perth? There’s a bit to think about before you hop in. Whether you’re dashing to the airport or heading out on the town, make sure your ride is smooth and stress-free. We’ve got five quick checks for you to do before booking. We will save you time and hassle. Keep reading to make your next taxi trip in Perth!
Vehicle Safety and Reliability Measures
Our main focus is on making each ride safe and reliable. This care will start from vehicle maintenance and safety checks, ensuring all aspects of your journey are covered.
Driver Background Checks and Vehicle Maintenance
Background checks for driver and vehicle maintenance play a vital role for Reliable Taxi Services. These checks help in providing safe journeys. We ensure that every driver meets high safety standards. Regular vehicle maintenance keeps your rides smooth and secure. This process is a part of our commitment to your safety, helping us maintain high standards.
Transparent Price
Our Transparent Price Policies ensure that you know exactly what you are paying for. No hidden fees and no surprises. We break down the costs so everything is straightforward.
Whether it is a ticket or a service charge, you will see where every dollar goes. This commitment helps you plan your budget better and trust in our services.
Taxi Fare Structures and Additional Charges
Taxi fares are key for anyone who is using cabs regularly. Each company sets its own rates. But they all follow a basic structure. This includes an initial fee, charges based on distance and time. Our aim is to break down these costs in clear, simple terms.
When you enter a taxi, the meter starts with a fixed fee and from there, the price increases as the car moves or when it waits. It’s essential to know the Fare Calculation Details. These include rates per kilometer and costs per minute during traffic.
Some companies might add extra fees. These could be for booking in advance, carrying big bags, or riding during peak hours. Always ask about these before your trip. By understanding these basics, you can avoid surprises and manage your travel budget better.
Driver Credentials and Customer Reviews
When you’re booking a ride, knowing who’s driving matters. Every driver has proper credentials, so you know they’re trained and ready. Customer reviews tell you what others think. They help you pick the best ride with confidence. Each review is honest, helping you make a smart choice. Always check them before you book. It’s the best way to ensure a safe and pleasant journey.
Evaluating Driver Experience and Customer Feedback
When you are hiring drivers, it is necessary to check driver qualifications. This will ensure they are skilled and safe on the roads. Another crucial  step is to look at passenger ratings. These ratings will tell you how customers feel about their journey.
It’s smart to listen to what passengers say. Their feedback can help you improve your service. Make sure your drivers are up to scratch and your customers are happy. It’s the best way to keep your service top-notch.
Vehicle Condition and Cleanliness Checks
When you hop into a taxi, a clean taxi interior matters a lot. It makes your ride pleasant. Every taxi owner should check their car’s cleanliness daily. A simple wipe down of surfaces helps. It’s not just about looking good; it’s also about your health. Dirt and germs can spread easily in small spaces like a taxi. So, regular cleaning is very important. Next time when you ride, take a moment to notice if the car is clean and tidy. It will say a lot more about the service you are getting.
Vehicle Maintenance and Hygiene Standards
To keep your car in top shape, it is very important to stick to regular vehicle servicing. This not only keeps your car running smoothly but also ensures it’s clean and hygienic. Regular checks can stop big problems before they start. This means you save money and time down the road.
It’s simple. When you take care of your car, it takes care of you. Cleanliness inside your vehicle is just as crucial as mechanical upkeep. A well-serviced car is safer and more reliable. Make sure you stick to your service schedule. It’s good for your car, and great for your peace of mind.
Cab Reservation Flexibility and Reliability
When you need a ride, flexible reservation choices matter. Our cab service offers both. You can book a cab any time, day or night. We’re reliable, too. You can trust us to get you where you need to go on time, every time. Whether it’s an early morning airport run or a late-night return from the city, our service adapts to your schedule. You can count on us for a stress-free journey every time.
Pre-booking and On Demand Services
In today’s fast paced world, having options like pre-booking is a necessity. When it comes to catching a taxi, these options become more important. Pre-booking your ride can save you from last-minute hassles. It ensures that a taxi is available right when you need it. This is where timely taxi availability comes into play.
On the other hand, on-demand taxi services offer flexibility. If your plans change suddenly, you can book a ride instantly. These options provide convenience and peace of mind. Whether you plan ahead or need a ride right away, you know you can bet on these services. They will make sure that timely transport is always available at your fingertips.

i almost never see art w the pigtails and its like damn. i feel like kind of look.. bald without them lol?? but maube thats just because im so used to seeing myself with them that anything else feels kind of weird. im used to it now since i almost never see anything else (opposite problems fr..) but i still cant help but feel i look TOO similar to my brother without them..! which.. i actually dont mind too much, i guess. i talk a lot about him negatively but in all honesty im actually very attached to him (as a character, rather than the guy who fucked up my life.)
i like reminding myself that everyone is their own person and will never be exactly like me because i tend to forget about it, especially with .. some stalking issues ive been facing lately where my ex has been stealing vital parts of my identity just to be petty and fuck with me. but when its not malicious, i find shared attributes quite interesting.. i still think the differences are more interesting though, because everyone is so different in even the slightest things.. like even if there are shared experiences, it affects the people differently, and i think tjats cool..
i lean very heavily into .. a lot of different things, itd take forevr to list everything too since i consider all of my traits to be significant and major aspects of me so i wouldnt want to leave anything out, but i guess to oversimplify, i really like being 'cute' and silly and shit like that. i do like more "serious" and dark aesthetics too, i think its kind of a given with me considering the majority of my sources are focused around those, but i focus much more on the lighter ones most of the time. ive made a lot of jokes about my sources vs the music i listen to because theyre a good representation of the interesting part of what im trying to get at and i find them funny. eh.. i couod put a lot of words into this but i feel like i wont be able to properly .. say the thing im trying to say, so i guess im done with this specifically for now .

Ithaqua isn't at the front at the moment but I didn't want to leave you waiting. He's fronted less and less after the drama we mentioned before but I did ask and he gave me the go ahead to reply. (Though these asks have intrigued him and he'd love to attempt fronting a little more)
I explained the contents of this ask and he trusts me understanding him well enough to know how he is.
One thing a vast majority of our system finds fascinating is exactly that. The idea of how everyone is their own person living their own lives doing the best they can to thrive and survive and even if it means that they are raised to be hostile or gentle. That everyone has experiences that shape them.
It's always been such a fascinating concept. He'd understand you wanting to separate from your brother so much, for very obvious reasons
One of the things we enjoy talking about is realism. The very reality of life even the dark topics most people find themselves uncomfortable talking about. It's amazing to us that they are even so uncomfortable with the dark truths of life. But we can't judge, there are still some topics that genuinely disturb us but they are far and few between.
- ☁ (apologies if you'd have preferred his direct response. He needed time with Alva but he too didn't wish to leave you hanging)

The vitality of your Realme device isn't just in your hands but also in those of your chosen service center. In Navi Mumbai, you're spoilt for choice, but how do you know you're making the right one? Identifying a dependable service center goes beyond a simple Google search. It requires keen attention to detail and a firm understanding of what to look out for.
Tumblr media
A stellar service center houses a team of highly trained technicians who understand the intricacies of your device. Their knowledge should translate into precise and efficient repair work. Transparent pricing is another hallmark of a reputable service center. No hidden costs, no surprise fees - just straightforward billing that correlates to the service provided.
Authenticity matters, too, when it comes to spare parts. An honorable service center will only use original components from Realme. This approach not only maintains the integrity of your device but also ensures its longevity.
We cannot talk about reliability without mentioning time efficiency. A worthwhile service center values your time and strives for a quick yet effective turnaround time. And, if they offer an official Realme warranty, that's a sure sign you're in the right place.
Do some digging and read reviews and ratings. This will give you an idea of the service center's reputation and performance from those who have used their services.
In a city like Navi Mumbai, it's crucial to entrust your Realme device to a service center that is dependable, skilled, and transparent. By understanding what to look for, you're one step closer to ensuring your device stays in top shape!
Top Realme Service Centers in Navi Mumbai
Navigating through the plethora of Realme service centers in Navi Mumbai can feel like a quest. But fret not! We've done the legwork for you. The crĂšme de la crĂšme of Realme service centers in Navi Mumbai includes the Realme Authorized Service Center in Vashi, Reliance Retail Limited in Kharghar, and the Realme Exclusive Service Center in Koparkhairane. Why these, you ask? Well, they've earned their stripes! With a track record of outstanding service, a strict adherence to Realme's quality standards, and a bouquet of praise from customers, these centers stand head and shoulders above the rest. But before you dash off to them, be sure to dial them up to double-check their working hours and the services they're currently offering. Trust us, your Realme device will thank you for it!
Experiences from Real Customers

They extolled the staff for their high degree of professionalism and expertise, making their visit both fruitful and enjoyable. Meanwhile, Reliance Retail Limited in Kharghar also racked up brownie points for its efficient service. Happy customers there lauded the speedy turnaround time and the staff's helpfulness, making it a firm favourite amongst the Realme community. As you navigate the world of service centres, customer experiences can be your compass. So don’t forget to flip through these golden nuggets of information. The shared experiences can shed light on what you can expect and help you make an informed decision.
Avoiding Unauthorised Service Centers
It might be tempting to seek out the seemingly cost-effective solution of an unauthorised service centre. After all, who doesn't love a bargain? However, when it comes to your Realme device, this could be a gamble that you'll wish you hadn't taken. Why, you ask? Let's peel back the layers.
At the heart of unauthorised centres is a dark underbelly of non-original parts. These knock-offs, while cheaper, may not offer the same quality and longevity as original Realme parts. Over time, this could spell disaster for your device, leading to more frequent and potentially costly repairs.
Don't forget the value of expert technicians, either. Unauthorised service centres often lack this critical component. Unskilled hands tinkering with your device can result in more harm than good. From improper installations to a lack of understanding about Realme's unique features, you're playing Russian roulette with your device's performance and lifespan.
Lastly, and perhaps most damningly, stepping into the shadowy world of unauthorised centres could lead to a voided warranty. This leaves you high and dry, should your device encounter future issues. Remember, the warranty is your safety net, and preserving it is key.
So, before you're lured by the siren call of lower prices, pause and consider the potential repercussions. Trust in the authorised centres, for they are your guardians in the world of Realme device repairs.
Regular Maintenance Tips for Your Realme Device
Keeping your Realme device in tip-top shape isn't rocket science. With some simple routines and a dash of attentiveness, you can ensure your device enjoys a long, problem-free life. For starters, cleanliness is next to godliness, and this applies to your device too. Keep it free from dust and grime. A little wipe down with a soft cloth goes a long way in maintaining the gleam of your precious gadget.
Then there's the question of software updates. Make sure you're always on top of this. Updates usually bring improved features, squashed bugs, and enhanced security measures – all integral to the smooth operation of your device. It’s like feeding your device the best diet to keep it in peak performance.
Are you guilty of overcharging your device? It's a common misstep that can take a toll on your battery's lifespan. Instead, try to keep your device's battery between 20% and 80%. Think of it as a balanced diet for your battery, not too much, not too little, just right!
Protect your device like you would protect your own skin. A suitable cover can protect your device from unsightly scratches and devastating falls. Think of it as your device’s personal bodyguard, ready to take a hit so your device doesn’t have to.
Another useful habit is regularly clearing out the cache and getting rid of those unused apps hiding in the corners of your device. This decluttering can free up much-needed space and ensure your device functions without a hitch.
Last but not least, if you spot an issue, don't hesitate to visit a trusted service centre. Acting fast can nip the problem in the bud before it becomes a full-blown issue that could potentially cause irreversible damage to your device. Remember, your Realme device deserves the best care it can get, and a little effort from you can go a long way in maintaining its prime condition!

Sometimes I happen to hear from otherwise well-meaning cishet friends who don't understand why certain stories are labeled as "queer stories" even when they don't have any explicit queerness in them, and it makes me think.
I know for a fact that they don't mean it in a malicious "not everything has to be gay" kind of way, but I still feel like they're holding onto a subtly queerphobic assumption that they can't quite identify, let alone correct. And that assumption is that the queer experience, somehow, has to be something alien to and isolated from the "universal" human experience.
They seem to think that if they can resonate with a story that has certain themes (say, feeling alienated by societal norms, or having a difficult relationship with your family, or what have you), then that story cannot possibly be Queer, because they don't think they could ever empathize with queer people on such a deeply human and intimate level.
And understanding this has put so many things into perspective for me, because like... That assumption is at the core of basically all kinds of systemic oppression. It's that baseline of separation between human beings that prevents even those who want to be allies from truly connecting with the people they politically align with. It's what makes so much of that allyship feel performative rather than genuine. It's what creates the existential void that fails to be filled by cultural appropriation. They all circle back to this insidiously subtle assumption that you can only relate to, and be shaped by, people and ideas that are like your own.
But humanity doesn't work like that. There are way more people out there who are different from you, than people who are exactly like you. And yet, encountering and having a genuine, respectful human connection with those people is vital - not only in the sense that it fosters tolerance, but also in the sense that it will fill gaps in your understanding of the world and of human nature that never would have been filled if you'd isolated yourself in a group of people identical to you (which is why the people who have the worst philosophical takes tend to be the ones who are most privileged and out of touch).
You can understand so much more about yourself, as an individual and as a part of humanity, if you accept the fact that the "universal" human experience includes a lot of things that don't directly apply to you. Because when you do that, you learn to see yourself and the things that make you unique in the broader context of the billions of other ways people can be. And, conversely, you realize how many experiences you have in common with people who you could have sworn had nothing to do with you.

How a Voice API Improves Customer Experience with Karix
What Exactly Is a Voice API? What Are Its Strengths?
Voice APIs are adaptable technologies that can help your firm provide a more engaging and conversational client experience. Rather than having to build out a best-in-class global telecommunications network to support sophisticated voice calling features from scratch, your developers can use the built-in, enterprise-grade features of a voice API to quickly create voice applications or embed voice functionality into your company’s existing digital channels, such as your website or app. An API is also cost-effective because it allows you to pay just for the phone calls you use.
While speech APIs allow voice calling in the same way as traditional corporate and consumer phone systems did, their possibilities are not nearly as limited. This communication technology is adaptable and extensible, allowing you to tailor it to your specific needs. For example, you can leverage speech APIs to build an AI virtual assistant that provides helpful voice-enabled customer care 24 hours a day, seven days a week, even while human employees are busy serving other customers or fast asleep. Customers who prefer to speak with a human can do so considerably faster because a virtual voice assistant reduces the total amount of incoming customer care calls.
You can also utilise a voice API to integrate voice right into your website and app, offering users a handy way to communicate with you at the exact moment your brand is on their mind. This in-app speech capability may also be integrated into your contact centre, providing critical call context to your agents so they already understand what the consumer is calling about without having to ask them to repeat vital information, which customers despise. Voice APIs can also perform real-time sentiment analysis, identifying whether a customer is becoming frustrated and allowing your firm to address their concerns before escalating their conversation. Your contact centre team can also evaluate these metrics on a regular basis to find areas for development and to constantly improve the customer experience.
What Are the CX Benefits of a Voice API?
Voice APIs can assist you in better identifying and serving your customers, ensuring that their problems are recognised and addressed. By recording contextual information, your human customer experience specialists can determine who is calling and why they are calling, regardless of whether the call came in through your website, app, or another channel. This contextual communication enables your team to customise each encounter with each customer, saving orientation time and speeding up resolution time. It also allows for real dialogues that put your customers at ease and increase their pleasure.
The automatic speech recognition characteristics of voice APIs provide your consumers with simple self-service alternatives, allowing them to perform tasks such as placing orders or validating their identities using their own voices rather than waiting on hold for a human. Furthermore, this feature supports over 120 languages, allowing for rapid service and an intuitive, comfortable experience for customers all around the world.
Many customers value privacy, and it should be a given as part of the customer experience you provide them. The in-app voice function allows users to connect from app to app and by phone without giving their phone numbers, improving privacy, and avoiding off-platform transactions. Finally, voice quality is critical to make all these experiences dependable. As a result, voice APIs feature high-quality voice quality to provide the highest calling quality for your applications. This is crucial because, as we’ll see, even the most innovative and forward-thinking customer experience approach will fail if voice quality isn’t outstanding and consistent.
How Voice Quality Affects the Customer Experience
Voice quality plays a crucial role in shaping the customer experience when interacting with companies like Karix. Here’s how voice quality can impact the customer experience:
Clarity and intelligibility: A high-quality voice ensures that the customer can clearly understand the information being conveyed. Crystal-clear audio eliminates misunderstandings, reduces frustration, and enhances overall communication effectiveness.
Professionalism and credibility: A clear and professional voice conveys a sense of credibility and expertise. When customers perceive the voice quality as high, they are more likely to trust the information being provided and have a positive impression of the company.
Emotional connection: Voice quality can evoke emotions in customers. A warm, friendly, and engaging voice tone can create a positive emotional connection and foster a sense of trust, empathy, and personalization. On the other hand, poor voice quality may create a negative emotional experience and lead to customer dissatisfaction.
Effective communication: Effective communication requires not only the right words but also the right tone and cadence. Voice quality influences the ability to deliver messages effectively, ensuring that the intended meaning and sentiment are conveyed accurately. It helps in conveying empathy, addressing concerns, and resolving issues promptly, leading to better customer satisfaction.
Brand perception: Voice quality contributes to the overall brand perception. A consistent and high-quality voice across various touchpoints, such as IVR systems, customer support calls, and recorded messages, reflects positively on the company. It enhances the brand image and contributes to a positive customer perception of the company’s professionalism and attention to detail.
Customer retention and loyalty: A positive customer experience, including good voice quality, can significantly impact customer retention and loyalty. Customers are more likely to return to a company that provides an excellent experience, and a pleasant voice quality can be a distinguishing factor that sets a company apart from its competitors.
Overall, ensuring high voice quality in customer interactions is essential for creating positive experiences, building trust, and fostering long-term customer relationships. Karix and other companies should prioritise voice quality to enhance customer satisfaction and maximise the value of their customer interactions.
What an Improving Call Quality Benefits the Business
Have you ever called a company, heard the connection go through, and then heard a crackling sound on the line that made understanding what was being said difficult? Or have you ever called a customer service number and begun telling a polite employee what you needed, only to be abruptly disconnected? Then you already know how bad call quality might seem. When you can’t hear your counterpart on the phone, you’re instantly at a disadvantage in acquiring the assistance you require. And if your call is suddenly disconnected, you’ll have to decide whether you want to restart from scratch.
Customers are often frustrated by these common voice quality difficulties. If people can’t have a meaningful discussion with you using one of the approaches, they find most human and natural, they won’t believe your customer service is helpful or responsive. They may even question whether your company loves the client experience enough to invest in its success. If your customers have these perceptions after a call, you may forfeit the opportunity to gain not only their business but also their referrals to other potential customers.
Companies cannot afford to allow poor quality derail the consumer experience. According to Karix’s research, the consumer loyalty tipping point is approaching faster than ever. If people continually encounter frustrating interactions when speaking (or, in this example, attempting to contact) with a business or service provider, 52 percent of poll respondents indicate they are very likely to cease buying from or utilising its services. When faced with communication dead ends, 46 percent of clients will do the same.
How a Voice API Improves Call Quality
Communications APIs can assist businesses in addressing these issues with mobile, landline, and VoIP call quality. An API voice call can provide the quality of service that clients demand if it has access to a carrier-grade network and worldwide connection to tier 1 carriers. Voice APIs from a reputable partner with direct peering connections to all major carriers in the United States eliminate intermediaries and further improve voice quality.
Furthermore, even during busy periods or as the organisation grows, speech APIs can reliably deliver these quality-of-service benefits at scale. These performance enhancements enable your company to increase contact centre quality, ensuring that your clients never have a shaky or unreliable connection when they call you. As a result, when they Connect with your customer service team, and everyone involved will be able to focus on what matters most: the needs of the customer.
Because speech APIs frequently need little code, your company may quickly integrate these capabilities into your app, website, and other digital presences rather than having to create them from the ground up or wait for expensive circuits to be constructed. This adaptable technology can coexist with telephony systems as needed, and because you only pay for what you use, it’s a low-cost approach to start incorporating more sophisticated and dependable calling capabilities into your client experience.
A voice API allows for innovation in ways that traditional voice calling cannot, such as exchanging contextual information that personalises the user experience and makes it more conversational. According to Zendesk’s recent survey, more than 90% of corporate executives and managers recognise that their organisations will have to do so.
Improve Your Customer Experience with a Voice API.
Customers want to talk to you, especially if you use speech technologies. At the same time, they have never had higher expectations for an exceptional customer experience. When speaking with you, customers prefer a genuine and comfortable discourse over a transactional relationship. It may seem obvious, but good communication makes the difference between whether they are satisfied and willing to do business with you again. A breakdown in call quality or a disorganised, impersonal dialogue can have an immediate impact on client sentiment. Voice APIs provide the meaningful conversations your customers anticipate, even in ways they never imagined. Voice APIs are far more than just a way to deliver a phone conversation; they are a strategic asset for improving your customer experience.

How To Improve Your Physical Self Easily
Improving your physical Self can be a rewarding and positive experience, provided that you have the right tools and approach.
To progress in any area of your life, you first need to know precisely what you want to improve. If your goal is “to get in shape,” you have set yourself up for failure.
The reason why so many people fail at physical self-improvement is that they need to define their goals clearly, or they need to learn how to go about achieving them.
Once you know what you want to improve physically, the next step is learning about the process involved in getting there.
This means reading articles like this and books from experts or mentors who have been through this process and can share their knowledge with others looking for direction on how best to achieve their goals!
Last but certainly not least, making progress toward improving your physical self requires realistic expectations of yourself and others around us who support us along this journey towards bettering yourself both inside and outwards.
This article will outline several tips on how to improve your physical self.

Now that you know what it means to improve your physical self, you can start this process by taking the following action.
Be honest with yourself. The first step in achieving anything is learning the truth about who you are and what you want. If this sounds difficult, remember that honesty is always better than lying to yourself. There’s no place for dishonesty in self-improvement.
Set goals that matter to you. Goals should be specific and measurable because they help keep us accountable for our progress toward our goals.
For example: “I want my blood pressure lower by 20 points in 3 weeks 1st, so it’s not as high when I go for my annual checkup.” Another way of expressing this goal might be:
“My goal is an average systolic blood pressure of less than 120 mm Hg and diastolic less than 80 mm Hg.” This kind of specificity will help keep us focused on what matters!
Be consistent! Showing up every day with determination will do wonders for helping us achieve our fitness goals (and life goals!). It may seem like hard work at first. Still, if we stick at it, we’re doing ourselves a favor by improving ourselves physically and mentally through all those days spent working out (or thinking about working out).

Tumblr media
Steps To Improve Your Physical Self-Improvement.
The first step is to assess your physical form and appearance honestly. You should also determine what areas of yourself you would like to improve.
Start by looking in the mirror and identifying what body parts you like, don’t like, and want to change. For example, do you have a larger stomach than most people do?
Do you have small shoulders or feel self-conscious about how thin they are? Are any parts of your body that bother or embarrass you when wearing certain clothes?
Alternatively, there aren’t any areas that need work, but instead, there are some things that don’t fit quite right on their own (like large hands). It’s vital that before starting any fitness program or diet plan, we know exactly what it is we’re trying to achieve so as to save time and energy on something that won’t help us reach our goals.
Next step: thinking about how much time per day/week/month will be dedicated to bettering ourselves physically so as not to waste all our hard work later down the road when life gets busy again!
Then do some research (e.g., on the internet) to determine what exercises, nutrition, and other lifestyle factors are involved in improving your chosen area(s) of yourself.
To begin with, it’s essential to have a solid knowledge foundation so you stay aware of the journey. You can start by visiting reputable sites or even Wikipedia and searching for “how to improve your physical self.” From there, you can find specific exercises and diets that will help you achieve your goal(s).
Setting goals is also crucial because this will keep you motivated throughout the process. If something isn’t working out for some reason (i.e., it hurts too much), try another method instead!
After conducting research, make sure that you clearly define what ” progress ” means in this area of self-improvement before proceeding further.
Before you begin to work on your physical self, make sure that you clearly define what ” progress ” means in this area of self-improvement. Ask yourself:
What do I want to achieve?
What do I want to avoid?
What should stay the same?
Which parts of my body must change for the better, and which ones can remain as they are?
You should also have realistic expectations regarding the pace of your progress. You may need to adjust or change your direction of self-improvement if you find that it is based on something other than a solid foundation of knowledge.
You should also ensure that you have realistic expectations regarding the pace of your progress. You may need to adjust or change your direction of self-improvement if you find that it is based on something other than a solid foundation of knowledge.
You should be prepared to accept that sometimes you may not succeed. If this occurs for any reason, it is vital to learn from the experience and try again with greater motivation and persistence.
It’s essential to set specific goals for yourself to avoid getting lost along the way; make sure these goals are challenging but attainable!
Make sure your goal is attainable. A good rule of thumb is that if it can be done in a day, it’s too easy and won’t feel like an accomplishment when you finish it. Make sure your goal is manageable, too; if you set a big goal that will take months or years, it may seem impossible and discouraging. The best way to balance these two aspects is by keeping track of how much work has been done each day and setting smaller “mini” or “bite-sized” goals within the big one. This way, even though there will be many small steps before reaching the result, each step feels like an accomplishment.
Furthermore:
Your goal should also be measurable (i.e., something concrete). For example: “I want to lose 10 pounds.” Or: “I want more energy.” These kinds of statements sound good at first glance but are pretty vague—how much weight do I need? How much energy do I need?
What does having more power mean? How will I know when I have achieved this state?
Setting measurable goals helps clarify what needs improvement so we can measure our progress over time instead of getting caught up in emotion or other variables.
These variables may cloud our judgment later down the line when looking back at how far we’ve come along with our progress towards achieving those improvements/changes desired beforehand!
One great way of motivating yourself during this process is by documenting progress toward achieving these goals through photos or video recordings (before/after shots).
Taking a picture of yourself before you start exercising for the first time and then taking another one after 30 days, 60 days, and 90 days can help motivate you. Seeing how far you’ve come will keep you going when times get tough.
The most important thing when trying to improve your physical self is consistency — keep going even if something isn’t working at first! The only way to improve your physical self is by doing it consistently, day in and day out.
You may wait for results but stick with it for at least a few months before giving up on any activity.
You must also be willing to try new things and step outside your comfort zone. Suppose you want to improve your physical self. In that case, there’s no such thing as being too busy or tired for exercise or workouts — even if that means doing a little more than what’s expected of you as an employee or student (e.g., taking stairs instead of the elevator).
Suppose something doesn’t work out well at first try again until it works!
Don’t give up hope because one attempt didn’t go perfectly; keep trying different ways until one stick and becomes part of daily life, like brushing your teeth or showering regularly, so they become habits instead simply tasks occasionally accomplished rather than daily habits like brushing teeth regularly throughout lifetime hopefully keeps them healthy lifelong.

Warnings: kidnapping, graphic depictions of violence, death
The years of harsh training that he had received since he was a child ensured that Illumi could never fall into a truly deep sleep. It was something all of the Zoldyck children had learned, to be aware of their surroundings even while resting. Falling asleep completely would leave him vulnerable to a potential attack. Vulnerability was weakness, and when one came from a family of assassins who were open about their occupation, one could not afford weakness; one needed to be ready for any potential enemies that were competent enough to get past the mountain gate and the host of butlers in their employ.
So even as Illumi slept with you curled up by his side in bed, there was still a part of him that was awake and taking note of everything.
The sound of your steady breathing.
The way the moving air made the curtains flutter against each other.
The noises of the wildlife that came alive at night in the woods beyond the mansion.
Even the distant sounds of the servants in the hallways as they worked through the night.
At one point you shifted in your sleep, turning over so that you faced him, your hand grasping the fabric of his nightshirt and resting on his chest. He tightened his grip around you, holding you close while still staying asleep.
Things were as they should be.
When you woke up some time later he didn't react. Nor did he react when you sat up, pulling away from him as you left the bed. This was unusual, but not unusual enough to rouse himself from sleep to confront you. You got upset when he demanded an explanation for your every action, even if he had good reason to do so.
Your reason for leaving the bed appeared to be an innocent one as he heard your soft footsteps make their way to the bathroom, the door slowly closing shut as you tried not to make a lot of noise.
Illumi continued to sleep while waiting patiently for you, anticipating the feeling of your warm body against his when you would return and fall asleep next to him again.
The sounds of the toilet flushing and the running water from the sink echoed against the porcelain surfaces in the bathroom. You would be back soon, and Illumi would be content to have you in his arms again.
He waited for you.
And waited.

....

. Something wasn't right.
That feeling woke him fully, his black eyes opening as he sat up in bed, looking towards the bathroom door. The light from the bathroom still shone beneath the door, but he could sense that you were no longer in there.
He had made his way over to the door in a matter of seconds, throwing it open to find exactly what he had been expecting: an empty bathroom and you nowhere in sight.
A small window near the ceiling caught his attention. It was wide open, and though it was a fairly high off of the tiled floor and the ground outside, it wouldn't have been impossible for you to have gotten out that way.
Illumi let out a small sigh as he turned and made his way to one of the side doors within his wing of the house that lead to the outside. No need to risk one of the butlers seeing him and then reporting this incident back to his parents. He had no desire for another lecture from his mother on training you “properly.”
You'd been doing so well recently, and you hadn't tried to escape in months. He had truly thought you had given up on the idea and that you had accepted your role as his wife.
Once he caught you it would be back to training again, and he would take however long he needed to drill it into you that there were no other options: you were his, and your place was here on Kukuroo Mountain.
The wildlife in the forest grew silent as he left the mansion and began his descent down the mountainside. It was easy to spot where nature had been disturbed: small branches that had snapped and clumps of dirt that had been kicked up leaving him a trail to follow. He couldn't help but muse on how the results of your training were showing through. Though the trail was there, it was less obvious than the ones you had left on your previous escape attempts. You were more aware of your surroundings and knew better on how to leave with virtually no trace behind. He would have been proud of you if not for the circumstances. Why couldn't you put these skills to use for the sake of him and his family?
He continued down the mountain, following your path. He had yet to come across you at all, and his brows furrowed the longer he continued. Your skills had grown since you had come here, but he knew from experience that you could not outrun him. He should have found you by now. So why hadn't he?
Had you somehow tricked him?
Did you make this path as a decoy while you attempted to leave down another side of the mountain?
It was certainly possible that you would have known you wouldn't be able to surpass him physically and had attempted to outwit him to buy yourself enough time. If this was the case, he would need to make sure that the lessons he taught after capturing you would stay with you so you would never try this again.
Illumi was about to head back up the mountain to see where he had gone wrong in following you when he noticed something in a particular patch of soft dirt. Multiple sets of footprints heading down the mountain, none of which could have belonged to you.
More tricks? Perhaps accomplices of yours? Or.....?
Illumi sprinted past, descending the mountain as he searched for you, still following the path that he now realized may not have been left by you. There were possibilities in his mind as to what had happened, but it was better now to ignore them and focus on finding you.
He was almost at the base of the mountain when he spotted something.
Three black-clad figures in one of the lower gardens, two women and a man. And there you were, unceremoniously slung over the man's shoulder as the three of them ran. It was clear you were unconscious.
The three sensed him then, stopping beneath a pristine gazebo as they turned to face him. The terror was evident in their stiff forms when their eyes landed on him. Getting caught wasn't something they had accounted for. Perhaps they would have gotten away if it had been literally anyone other than a member of the Zoldyck family hunting them down.
Your limbs hung limply as the man held you, only swaying lightly when he pulled out a sword and pointed it at Illumi, the women with him following suit.
All the while Illumi stood there, silently assessing the situation before he came to a conclusion.
“Were you trying to kidnap my wife?”
The three tensed at the question, their auras flaring as they anticipated an attack. Illumi remained relaxed, even cocking his head to the side slightly as he asked “am I correct?”
After a bit of hesitation, the man nodded.
Illumi couldn't help the smile that formed (which only served to put the intruders more on edge).
“That's a relief,” he said, sighing, “I was worried she was trying to get away again. I'm glad that wasn't the case this time.”
“You.... You're glad we tried to take her?” one of the women asked.
As quickly as it had come, the smile on Illumi's face faded away, his aura flaring and engulfing the three of them.
“Of course not,” he said, his tone far more grave now.
“The fact that people like you would even think of touching her is unacceptable.”
The intruders were skilled enough, and had enough sense to know that an attack from him was imminent. As Illumi burst forward, needles in hand, the man threw you to the woman at the back, yelling at her to run. The other woman was too slow in raising her sword to block Illumi's first strike and a needle entered her skull and burst out through the other side, lodging itself in the stone pillar of the gazebo as she fell to the ground dead.
The man fared only a bit better, managing to block the needle thrown at him and running forward to swing his sword in an attempt to take Illumi's head. It was easily dodged, and Illumi threw four more needles at him, three of which hit their marks and leaving the man to join his fallen companion.
The last one hadn't gotten far, the other two having only been able to buy her mere seconds before Illumi turned his attention to her. She was carrying you on her back, effectively using you as a body shield as you obscured her vitals. There were a few ways in which he could strike the needle through you to kill her and only leave you with minor damage, but he rejected them. These people weren't worth making you go through any sort of pain.
He sent six needles flying towards her legs, embedding themselves from the back of her knee down to her ankle with three on each leg and making her cry out as she fell forward. She lost her grip on you and you fell to the side of her, the terrain making you roll away slightly. The woman was still trying to fight, but her attempts to pull out any weapons she could use to throw at him were quashed when he threw two more of his needles, these one stabbing through her wrists. She cried out as the nen in his needles worked through her, intentionally causing her pain.
But at the moment she wasn't important. Illumi brought his attention back to you, walking to where you lay and kneeling to examine you. There was minimal damage to you, some scrapes along your arms and legs where the branches in the forest had brushed against you. The worst of it was at the base of you neck where a bruise was beginning to form, the size and shape of the mark a clear indicator that this was where they had hit you to knock you out. Aside from that, you appeared to be fine, and Illumi allowed himself another small smile as he picked up your fallen form and held you bridal style.
The woman was now attempting to crawl away, her hands and feet tearing up the grass of the garden while the needles impaired her movement. The last of the intruders was taken care of with a flick of his wrist and a needle in the back of her skull.
His walk back up to the family home was brisk, and instead of heading for the side door to his quarters as he had originally intended, he went towards the main entrance instead. Even from his current position he could sense the activity from the mansion; someone had noticed that something had been amiss and had raised the alarm. Better to go in through the front and order whatever servants were there to clean up the bodies he had left in the gardens. That way he could have you back in the safety of his room that much faster.
What he hadn't expected was to see Silva standing at the mansion's entrance, Tsubone and Amane standing a few feet behind him. Silva glanced down at your unconscious form in Illumi's arms, a single brow raising.
“What is it this time?” he asked as Illumi made his way inside.
“Nothing that was her fault.”
A look of mild surprise settled on his face as Illumi continued “intruders found their way up here and tried to make off with her.”
“Did you find out how they got in?”
“They weren't talking.”
“Hmm.”
Silva sounded as though he didn't believe Illumi on that last part, but he made no move to stop him as his eldest son walked back to his wing of the house. Even if Silva (rightfully) believed that Illumi had made no effort to get any information from the intruders, there was little to be done about it now.
“Tell mother that her favorite garden is largely intact,” Illumi called back.
His father made another noise of disapproval, but ultimately decided to drop the matter.
“Tsubone,” Illumi heard Silva say.
“Yes, master Silva.”
“Get those bodies off of my mountain.”
Illumi tuned out whatever words were said next. As far as he was concerned, the matter no longer involved him. His focus was now on you and your well-being. From looking over you earlier, he knew that physically, you'd be fine. The slight injuries you had received would be gone in no time, but he was going to keep you by his side as much as possible for the next few days. He would just need to make it clear that this time it wasn't being done as a punishment. As he had said to his father, you weren't at fault for anything that had happened tonight. The most that could be blamed on you was the fact that you had been captured so easily, but that was a fault that was also on him; that he somehow hadn't been able to sense the presence of those intruders when they snatched you from the bathroom. There was room for improvement for both of you, and Illumi was content to work towards that as long as you were by his side.
After closing the window in the bathroom and changing you into clean nightclothes, Illumi pulled you back under the covers with him, arranging you so your head was resting against his chest while he wrapped his arms around you again. He was sleeping again shortly after.
If anyone was to walk in on the two of you, they wouldn't have suspected that the events of the last hour had happened at all.
When you awoke next Illumi woke with you, and he watched as you reached for the back of your neck, lightly touching the tender spot where you'd been hit.
“I-Illumi?” you asked, trying to find his face in the dark.
“Yes?”
“Did.... Did something happen?”
“You don't remember?”
You shook your head.
“You were attacked by intruders who tried to take you from me,” Illumi explained, “I chased them down and took you back.”
“Ah. I see,” you said, resting your head back down on his chest. You didn't bother asking what had happened to the intruders; the answer was easy enough to figure out.
The conversation seemed as though it had ended, and Illumi was waiting for you to go back to sleep before he did so himself. Outside in the mansion, the activity he had sensed on his way back up had died down as well. Tonight's little disturbance had ended, and everyone was more than willing to move past it.
“Illumi?”
“Yes?”
“Thank you,” you said, “sorry for getting caught.”
Illumi's eyes widened slightly at your words. He wasn't sure what exactly he had expected from you, but it wasn't that.
“I would be a terrible husband if I abandoned my wife so easily.”
You hummed in response, closing your eyes as you settled yourself on top of him. Illumi watched silently, repeating your words in his head and mulling them over. Before you could go back to sleep again, he got your attention by speaking your name.
“Do you love me?” he asked when you looked back to him.
“...... Yeah.”
It had taken a few seconds too long for you to reply, and the answer itself was not wholly satisfying. He had been hoping for a straightforward “yes”. Certainly by now he had proved that he cared for you.
Nothing more was said between you two, and you finally fell back into your slumber. As Illumi fell back to sleep himself, he reminded himself that you had thanked him unprompted, and had even apologized for your shortcomings. The matter of you loving him was unsatisfactory, but something was going right for your relationship. It was merely something else that could be worked on when the morning came.
As you fell back into your deep sleep state, that part of Illumi that always stayed awake remained aware of everything about you. The sound of your breathing as it stayed in a steady pattern, the feel of your weight against him, and the way you would shift in your sleep, at times attempting to pull away from him. Every time that happened, he would pull you back to him. Even asleep, he would make sure to keep you by his side always.

It had been three weeks since Dabi left and in those three weeks you hadn’t heard a peep from him. True to his word he never called you. Shoto seemed to be getting vague updates from Katsuki but nothing that could settle your nerves.
You threw yourself into working out to distract yourself. You refused to ever be weak again. Every day you got up early and hit the home gym that you built with Dabi’s money in his absence. You were surprised how good it felt to spend his money without his permission. You knew he had enough to go around, but it was almost like payback for him leaving you here without him.
The gym was simple. A treadmill, some free weights, and a punching bag.
The guys took turns coming to check on you. Shoto more than the others, which was fine with you considering he was the only one with the balls to spar with you. You didn’t know if they were scared of you, Dabi, or Katsuki. But whoever it was, they were keeping their hands to themselves. And that’s how you ended up here now pinned underneath Shoto’s knee.
“I told you, stop thinking so hard. Your moves are predictable, I can read your every move before you do it. You need to relax and trust your instincts.”
You shoved him off of you and sat up, putting your elbows on your knees.
“I knew I’d be rusty
but I didn’t think it’d take this long to get back into shape.”
Shoto handed you a water bottle and sat next to you. “Well you’ve always been good, but you’ve also relied on your quirk pretty heavily up until now. You’ll get there, just takes time.”
You sat for a while in silence. That’s another thing you appreciated about Shoto. His ability to find comfort in shared silence. He never forces a conversation or pushes you to talk about things you don’t want to.
“So how long can you stay this time?”
His mismatched eyes met yours with a guilty look. “Honestly I’ve already been here a little too long. My shift starts soon, and I have a long drive.” He sighed as he screwed the cap back onto his water bottle. “Last I heard from Bakugo there wasn’t really much change but they’re both still alive and well. I’m supposed to be hearing from him again sometime in the next few days. So, I should have a better update the next time I see you.”
You followed him to the front door, feeling your heart sink as you went. You hated this part. The part when they left. There wasn’t exactly a schedule, they just came and went when they could. It was incredibly lonely when it was just you and you were already getting anxious thinking about it. “I wish he’d just come home already. I hate being here alone
”
Shoto sighed with his hand on the door. “I can only imagine
I’ll see what I can do about getting you some better company. Maybe we can rework our shifts or something
I don’t know, but we’ll figure something out.” He reached a hand out and gently pressed it to your shoulder, “Don’t get into trouble while I’m gone, and for the love of god follow my idiot bothers laws.” His eyes twinkled, “Oh! That reminds me
ware your fucking collar
 his words not mine.”
Your eyes bulged. Those where the first words you’d gotten from him since he left. Your fingers darted to your bare neck, “I-It’s charging
 the battery doesn’t last forever.”
Shoto chuckled, “Well according to him you haven’t worn it for two days. He interrupted my last call with Bakugo just to tell me.”
“I guess I should have known he’d be watching the stats like the creep his is.” You rolled your eyes and tried to suppress the blush that was threatening to break out across your cheeks. Of course he was watching. Watching the tracker to make sure you were where you were supposed to be. Watching your vitals to makes sure you were staying healthy. Watching your call log to make sure you weren’t doing anything you weren’t supposed to be doing.
For the first time since he left you felt an odd giddy feeling. It reminded you of the feeling you’d get when you were in school and a boy you had a crush on liked one of your pictures on social media. It wasn’t direct interaction, but it was a reminder that he cared.
Shoto gave you a quick hug before leaving, reminding you to lock the door as he went.
As soon as you heard the security system signal that is was on, the empty feeling returned. You were alone again. By yourself. With only your thoughts to keep you company
 how awful.
You dragged yourself over to the where your collar was charging and put it back on. Your fingers brushed over the familiar material. A warm feeling started to push through the empty feeling in your stomach as you thought about how Dabi was probably checking on you every chance he got. The least you could do was reassure him that you were okay.
Despite being able to talk again you had decided to keep up with the sign language. It was a good distraction and also something really helpful to know. You learned from Shoto that Izuku had learned sign just in case Katsuki went deaf, and he ended up teaching Shoto. So it seemed it could definitely come in handy down the road.
You also spent a great deal of time watching cooking shows and trying to learn some things.
You were never that great with cooking before, hell you didn’t even really know how to efficiently shop for groceries. You were rarely home, and when you were you were ordering in or letting Katsuki cook for you. But now that you were home alone for days at a time, you decided it was time you learn.
Tonight, you watched a video on how to sign different colors and numbers as you attempted to make rice balls. The chef made it look so easy in the video you watched earlier. But so far you were finding it to be incredibly difficult.
You were trying to take this time alone to improve yourself. Now that he wasn’t here it was easier to see how much you had relied on Dabi. You wanted him to come back to a new and improved you.
You sat down to dinner with your pathetic looking rice balls and fought to push down the empty feeling in your stomach once again. The loneliness killed your appetite, you could feel yourself sinking into a funk. Every day it got harder to convince yourself that eating was important, that getting out of bad even mattered, that working out was worth it.
But then you thought about what Dabi would say if he found out you weren’t taking care of yourself. He’d probably bend you over his knee and spank you for even thinking about skipping a meal.
So even though your depressed brain tried really hard to convince you that you weren’t hungry, you shoved bite after bite into your mouth. He’d be livid if you so much as lost a pound while he was gone.
You thought about the way he loved to worship your body. How he groaned when his hands gripped your hips. How his hands traveled up your thick thighs and around to your ass before giving it a squeeze and
 great
 now you’re working yourself up.
There had been several times your needs had riled you up to the point where you had tried to take care of them yourself. But no matter what you did or how hard you tried, you hadn’t been able to get yourself off. Your hands were no comparison to Dabi’s.
You let out a frustrated growl as you dropped your plate into the sink.
Once again you had this burn in your core that was spreading and you were already frustrated knowing there was nothing you could do about it. You didn’t even have any toys to help and there was no way you could ask one of the guys to bring you one the next time they came. You flushed at the image of Shoto or Izuku handing you a vibrator.
With the ache between your legs only seeming to grow worse, you skipped to your bedroom, well Dabi’s bedroom, but you guess it was yours now too.
You were sweaty from your workout and was in desperate need of a shower which gave you the perfect idea.
You quickly stripped your clothing and stepped into the hot spray of the shower you quickly washed your hair and body before turning the hot water down a little to a nice room temperature.
With nervous hands you pulled the shower head down from it’s spot and played with the settings. You switched between them until you found one that seemed
 promising?
The shower head slowly roamed from your neck to your chest, to your nipple. You sucked in a breath as you closed your eyes and tried to pretend that it was something or rather someone else. Your breathing picked up as the spray slowly moved further down until it reached the spot that was giving you all the trouble.
Suddenly a jolt of pleasure ran through you and you had to put a hand on the wall to keep yourself from falling over. A low moan fell from your lips and you rolled your hips against the pressure. “Oh god. Oh shit. YES!” It had been weeks since you last orgasmed and you could feel everything that had been building coming to a climax
 literally.
Your breathing became erratic as you imagined rough callused fingers rubbing your clit while wet, sloppy lips mouthed at you neck. Your head swam with desire as you felt the familiar clenching in your core.
Then out of nowhere you felt your pleasure snap as your first orgasm in weeks washed over you in heavy waves. “FuUuck!” Your legs wobbled and almost buckled underneath you. Your orgasm seemed to go on way longer than any one you’ve had in recent memory. It just kept going and going till the point that you thought you couldn’t breathe.
Your legs crumpled underneath you and you fell as your orgasm finally finished.
After a few minutes you used your foot to turn the water off as your breathing finally started to even out.
Your heart practically leapt out of your throat as your collar started beeping with an incoming call. You answered it immediately in the hopes that it was Dabi.
“H-Hello?”
“Y/N!? Are you okay?”
That voice didn’t belong to Dabi but it was probably the second best option.
“Kats? Y-yeah I’m fine. W-why do you ask?” You sucked in a huge breath to help yourself come back down from your high.
“Dabi said he got an alert that your vitals were at dangerous levels. Apparently, your heartbeat was erratic
 You workin out or somethin?”
You blushed and cleared your throat, “Or something.”
There was a brief silence on the other end before you heard a muffled curse. “Fuck, okay so you’re more than good.” You could almost hear the blush in his voice. “Sorry to interrupt
 have a good night
”
Before he could hang up you panicked and shouted, “WAIT!”
“
 Yeah?”
“How are you guys?” You hated how weak you sounded. How desperate you sounded for any update on their progress.
“We’re alive and making good progress. That’s all I can really say right now.”
“Good okay
 hey uh Kats
please be safe. Both of you.”
“We’ll try
I gotta go now. Good night y/n.”
Before you could respond you heard the beeping, indicating that he had hung up.
Groaning you picked yourself up and made your way to the big comfy bed that just felt too big now that it was just you. You pulled one of Dabi’s shirts on that dwarfed you and queued up a movie on the TV.
Sleep didn’t take long to take you and your last thoughts were of how monotonous your life was now. You go to bed, wake up, work out, work on Sign Language, watch cooking shows, cook dinner, rinse repeat.
You just needed something to mix it up.
And your wish would be granted not even two days later when Kirishima showed up at your door with pointy toothed grin. “Hey Y/N! How’s it going? Gone crazy yet?”
“I think I went crazy years ago bud.” You giggled as you stepped to the side to let him in. Instead he just stood there looking at you funny. “So are you coming in or did you just drop by to stare at me and leave?”
“Oh! Right? Hold on
close your eyes! I have a surprise.”
You narrowed your eyes but complied with a sigh. “Kiri I swear if this surprise is a wet willy, I will hypnotize you and make you pee yourself.”
He was quiet as he tiptoed away quickly. Only moments later you heard the pitter patter of him trying and failing to sneak up on you. You knew he was next to you now, but you kept your eyes closed anyways.
“Kiri what are you—”
You shrieked as a wet tongue licked you from your chin to your ear. “WHAT THE FUCK KIRI!”
Your eyes bolted open to see a crying Kiri holding a puppy. He was laughing so hard you were scared he was going to drop the dog.
You reached out and yanked the puppy from him and could immediately feel yourself sinking into its soft fur. “Oh my goodness! Who is this sweat baby?”
You nuzzled into and started rubbing its soft ears.
“He is your new guard dog. Well he’s more of a guard puppy, but you get the point.”
He started to walk back towards his car, “Wait? Are you leaving already?”
He gave you a regretful look, “Yeah sorry princess, I only had time to come drop off your new friend. I have to go pick up my kid from school, but I think I’m coming back soon. I’ll leave you two to get acquainted.” With a wink he hopped into his car and sped away.
You were only sad for a brief moment before you scurried back inside with your new friend.
You plopped yourself down on the couch with the puppy sitting in your lap. He was a little ball of fur with big ole paws and floppy ears. From what you could tell he might be an Australian Shepheard. “What are we going to call you huh?”
The little furball cocked his head at you and started chewing on your fingers.
“Hmmm what about Buddy? No that’s clichĂ©. Ajax? He was the strongest warrior in all of Greece.” You watched as the “warrior” in question sniffed his own butt. “Hm maybe not. What abouuuuut
 Bravo?”
He looked at you and gave the cutest little “woof”
You smiled and scratched behind his ears. “Okay then Bravo it is. Welcome to your new home sweet boy.”
Bravo was exactly what you needed in order to break out of your slump. You could feel your serotonin rise every day as you bonded with him. He was keeping you company and also keeping you very busy. Between poddy training and teaching him basic commands he was a handful. He loved to follow you everywhere you went and nip at your ankles until you paid attention to him.
It was amazing how quickly Bravo was becoming the most important thing in your life. Since Dabi left you had frequent nightmares that often led to anxiety attacks once you woke up. But now you had a fuzzy four-legged friend who not only woke you up when you cried in your sleep but also laid on top of you until you calmed down. You almost laughed thinking about how Dabi would react when he came home. You knew he’d find a way to be jealous of a dog.
Bravo settled into a routine with you and he never let you out of his sight. He really had the potential to be an excellent guard dog. He was extremely smart, picking up new tricks and commands easily. He was perceptive. And most importantly he didn’t hesitate to attack any of the guys, in his cute puppy way, when they came to visit. He was one hundred percent a Mamma’s boy.
Today had been a weird one. It was officially a month since the boys left. You stayed in bed a little longer than usual but you had responsibilities now and Bravo wasn’t going to let you be sad all day. He decided growling and pulling on your blanket was the best way to get you attention.
“Bravo, no. I know you want to play, just let me be sad a little longer, and then we’ll go outside.” You knew he didn’t understand you, but it felt so nice to just talk to him even if he can’t respond.
Bravo continued to jump and bark at you obviously trying to get you play with him. You rolled your eyes as you threw the blanket off of you. “Alright, alright, I get it. Let’s go outside.”
You rolled out of bed and pulled your hair into a bun. It was cold out now, and it even looked like it might snow soon. You used to love the snow, but the older you got the more miserable it sounded. You pulled a pair of sweatpants and a baggie hoodie on and started to drag your feet towards the back door. “You couldn’t let me wallow for even a couple hours huh?”
You slid the sliding glass door open and Bravo took off into the backyard.
The sky was a dark and depressing shade of grey. You could see your breath escaping you and it made you shiver. “Okay Bruno let’s make this quick! It’s fucking cold
” You shoved your hands in your pockets as Bravo sprinted from one side of the yard to another before stopping to sniff a spot on the fence to pee. “Good boy Bravo
let’s go in now. Eat some breakfast, how does that sound?”
Snow started to fall and before long you could feel it soaking through your hoodie. “BRAVO! You little shit, come on it’s cold!”
He ran towards you like he was going to listen before turning at the last second and running off to the side. You groaned. You loved the dog, but it was times like this that reminded you how frustrating taking care of another living thing could be.
You took a couple steps towards him and he just stood there wagging his goofy little tale. You leapt towards him just for him to run off again in the other direction. “I swear Bravo, if you love me at all you will come to me right now!”
You tip toed towards him slowly, “Come on dude. It’s too cold.” You were so close now, you just needed to scoop him up. You jumped at him but again he leapt out of the way except this time
your foot slipped on some fresh snow on the concrete surrounding the pool
 and in you fell.
The ice-cold water cut through you straight to your bones like a million needles. You gasped which was a huge mistake as you sucked in water into your lungs. Now the panic was setting in. The last time you were in this pool you drowned. And this time there was no Dabi to resuscitate you. There was no one here. You could die here, and no one would even know for days.
No, no, no, this was not the time to have a panic attack. You had to think. You had to get out of this pool. But you couldn’t, the only thing you could think was how cold you were, how painful the water in your lungs was, how the cold water felt like you were being stabbed. You vision was blacking out, your limbs were becoming numb, you finally started to try and swim, but your muscles were so sluggish. It was agony trying to get your arms and legs to cooperate. Were you going into shock?
You felt yourself sinking and there was nothing you could do. Your baggie hoodie and sweatpants were only getting heavier on your limbs. It was like you had forgotten how to swim. Or like one of those dreams where it doesn’t matter how hard or how long you keep swimming you never make it to the surface. You expected your life to flash before your eyes, but it didn’t. Instead all you had was fear. Fear and regret. And those almost weighed you down more than your soaked clothes.
You have unfinished business. You had a corrupt hero system to dismantle. You had a life to reclaim. You had
people who loved you, and you couldn’t leave them behind just yet.
You pushed as hard as you could now. You refused to give up. Just before you blacked out your head broke the surface. You struggled to stay afloat as you managed to get yourself to the ladder. You gripped it with all your determination. Your breathing was getting shallow but you didn’t know if it was the panic or the cold.
You screamed as you tried to pull yourself out of the pool. It hurt so bad. Your muscles sched and it was almost like they stopped working all together. You could hear Bravo barking as he paced the side of the pool. As soon as you got your upper body on the concrete Bravo took your sleeve in his mouth and tugged. It wasn’t enough to pull you out on his own, but it definitely helped.
Your body was wracked with shivers. You were shivering so hard it hurt. Your collar was beeping but you couldn’t bring your fingers up to push the button to answer. You were literally frozen
from the cold, from the fear.
The beeping just continued, and tears flowed down your cheeks. All you had to do was move your hands, you just needed to push the button, and you could answer, you could ask for help. You knew Dabi had to have been alerted that you were in danger by now. Someone had to be coming for you.
Bravo laid on top of you licking your face as you lost your mind. The beeping from your collar kept going, and you don’t know what possessed you, it must have been one last surge of adrenaline, your bodies last effort to save yourself. But your fingers crawled towards your collard and clicked the button.
“Y/N! Thank god! I’ve been calling! Are you okay?” It was Kats again. You were quiet for a while as you tried to cough up some water. “Y/n? Are you okay? Or is this another
 false alarm?”
You sniffled, “I-I-I F-Fe-Fe-ll I-In T-The-Pool.”
“Uhm Okay? Are you okay? Did you hit your head or something?”
A sob left you, “No! I-I’m Not O-Okay. I-I”
There was a muffled sound on the other end of the call, "Y/n, baby I need you to breathe. I know you’re scared. Can you get inside?”
“Dabi?” His voice filled you with the warmth you desperately needed, but it wasn’t enough to get your body moving. “No. I-Its t-too C-Cold. I-I-“
“Stop talking! Conserve your warmth. Shoto’s already on his way. He’ll be there soon baby. I’m going to stay on the phone with you until he gets there, but I need you to stay awake. Can you do that?”
Bravo curled up next to your neck and nuzzled into you while whining.
You don’t remember passing out. But when you woke up you felt like you were in an oven.
Your eyes slowly opened to find that you were under several blankets with Shoto sitting next to you with his hand on your forehead. “She’s still asleep
but I’m worried she’s getting sick. I’m pretty sure she has a fever.” He was on the phone with someone, “I keep going back and forth from trying to warm her up to cooling her down
Well what do you want me to do I’m not a doctor
Do you know anyone we can trust?” Whoever he was talking too was obviously not happy. “How do you suppose we do that?”
Your eyes closed and sleep claimed you once more. You tried to stay awake, but it seemed impossible. You didn’t even dream, you were just sucked into the black abyss.
The next time you woke up there was a cloth on your forehead and two voices whispering by the door.
“She probably needs an IV at this point. She’s been in bed for three days and she hasn’t eaten anything. Shoto this is more than just a cold. She’s really sick.”
You knew that voice belonged to Izuku. He sounded stressed out. Had he really said there days. There’s no way you had been sleeping that long.
“I agree, but where would we get one? Do you know how to set one up? No? Because neither do I. I swear all of you are crazy. First Dabi rips me a new asshole over the phone about how I was supposed to keep her safe, then Bakugo gives me shit for not being able to find her a doctor, and now you. I’m doing my best!”
You wanted to sit up and tell him you were fine. But you couldn’t because once again sleep was calling you back. The black abyss sucked you back in.
The next time you woke you felt slightly better, your head definitely hurt a little less.
“I can’t believe you idiots where hiding this from me? Did you not trust me, or did you just think you could dismantle the entire system on your own?”
When the fuck did Aizawa get here?
“You’ve been retired for years
we didn’t want to drag you into this.”
A brief silence passed, and it sounded like he was standing up from a chair, “Well I’m glad you did. She was in rough shape. The IV will help. Let me know if you need anything else. And I mean anything. Like you said
I’m retired now so I have a lot of free time.”
You managed to open your eyes, but had to squint at the bright light. “Was that Sensei?” Your voice sounded rough and foreign, but it was unmistakably yours.
Shoto’s mismatched eyes filled your vision, “Oh thank god you’re awake. How are you feeling?”
You tried to clear your throat but if felt like sandpaper, “Like shit
”
He climbed into bed next to you, “When I found you, you had hypothermia. I warmed you up but then you got really sick. I finally caved and had to call Aizawa. I don’t know how he knows how to set up an IV or how he even got his hands on all this medicine and medical equipment. But I’m not going to question it either.”
You leaned on him. “That was nice of him
” Your muscles still ached, and you you’re your skin was so sensitive. You just wanted to pass out again and wake up when all of this was over. “Where’s Bravo?”
At the sound of his name you felt a weight near your feet shift. He got up and made his way to you putting his head on your chest. His big fuzzy head was making you all warm and cozy. “I think I’m going to take a nap.”
“Y/n no, come on I need you to eat something. Seriously, it’s one of your laws, you have to eat, so you need to stay awake.”
You hugged your blanket to you. “I’ll eat when I wake up
 promise.”
This time when you slept you had dreams waiting for you. They were all weird and generally involved your time at UA. You dreamt of sports festivals, hanging out with your friends, and training with Sensei. But for once you didn’t have a nightmare. Which was a blessing.
“Wake up
 you need to eat something
 open your eyes baby.”
You stirred and found that you were laying on top of something, or rather someone. A hand was wrapped tightly around your waist while the other was brushing your hair out of your face.
Your sleepy brain was desperately trying to figure out if you were still sleeping because this had to be a dream.
“Are you really here?”
A kiss was placed on your forehead, “Yes baby, I’m really here. And I really need you to eat something so you can get better.”
His words had your stomach growling, making your groan.
Your eyes opened to find his blue ones staring back at you. The amount of concern in them was startling. “I must look like shit if you’re looking at me like that.”
Dabi didn’t so much as crack a smile at your humorless joke. “Well by law I can’t lie to you
so yeah. You’ve definitely looked better.” His thumb brushed your cheek, “Nothing that can’t be fixed with a shower and a good meal though.”
He helped you sit up and fluffed some pillows behind you. “You don’t have to do all this. I’m feeling better now. I can do it myself—”
Dabi cut you off with a glare. “Does it look like I care. I’m sure you could take care of yourself, but when will you accept the fact that you don’t have to anymore. Stupid girl.”
He reached next to him and picked up a bowl of soup. “This will be easy enough on your stomach. You are going to eat every last bite, and then we are going to take a shower.”
He didn’t leave anything up for debate. It was a demand. “We?”
“Yes we. You’re not leaving my sight for the foreseeable future.” He held a spoon full of soup up to your mouth. You wanted to protest that you could at least feed yourself but quickly thought better when you saw the look he was giving you. He wasn’t to be challenged or questioned.
So, you accepted it and swallowed, your eyes never leaving his. You continued on like that until the spoon scraped the last bit of soup from the bowl. You could see the tension in Dabi’s clenched jaw. He was upset, possibly even mad.
Your eyes averted to your lap, “I’m sorry.”
“For what? What do you have to be sorry about?”
You played with hem of your shirt. Trying to look anywhere but at those intense blue eyes. “I fucked up. I was careless and I
I fell into the pool.” Your fists clenched, “It wouldn’t have been so bad if I wasn’t so fucking weak. I panicked, and it put me in danger. I’m sorry.”
His fingers intertwined with yours and pulled them to his lips. “You have nothing to be sorry for, and you are most definitely not weak.” He kissed the tip of your nose, “Look at me please.”
It was so rare that he said please. It sent butterflies through your stomach. You raised your eyes to his once more, but this time they were much softer. “Your panic is totally understandable. If anything, it’s my fault because I’m the reason you have fucking PTSD.” He pressed his forehead to yours, “I feel like no matter how hard I try, I just end up hurting you. Even when I’m not here, my actions still have consequences.”
“Well you know what I think? I think I wouldn’t be here right now if it weren’t for you. I think you have saved me in so many ways, and you have been there when it matters most. Like right now.” You tucked yourself under his chin and hugged him until you felt the tension bleed from him as he relaxed into your hold.
You felt his chest rise and fall as you both just sat there holding each other.
Finally, he pulled back and sighed, “Okay as nice as it feels to hold you again
 you kinda stink
 can we go shower now?”
You frowned, “Hey! I’ve been sick. It’s not like I could bathe myself. Did you want Shoto to do it for me?”
He growled and threw you over his shoulder. “You’re lucky. If I wasn’t worried about nursing your sick ass back to health, that comment would have gotten your ass in trouble.”
It wasn’t until Dabi was stripping you down in the bathroom that you remembered Bravo. “Hey! Where’s Bravo?”
Dabi froze, “Who the fuck is Bravo?”
You rolled your eyes, “My dog asshole. Bravo. Where is he?”
He growled, “That little shit wouldn’t let me near you, so I threw him out.”
You pushed his hands away from you, “Excuse me
You WHAT? It’s cold outside. Go bring him inside right now!”
He grabbed your flailing hands and held them down at your sides. “I said I threw him out, not outside. If I had to guess the little runt is probably sitting outside the door to the bedroom, waiting to sink his teeth into my ankles the second I open the door. Relax.”
He let go of your hands and continued to undress you, and then himself. “You be nice to him. That little ankle biter is my new best friend.”
“Hmmm I don’t think so.” His arms wrapped around your now naked body. He picked you up like you weighed absolutely nothing and walked you over to the shower. “I think I’m your best friend.”
You smirked as you wrapped your arms around his neck, “Oh you think so huh? So we’re friends now? That seems like a demotion to me
” You kissed his chest before pulling away. “Last time I checked friends don’t shower together
so I guess I’ll just get out and wait my turn—”
“Don’t you dare step out of this shower.” His fingers dug into your hips. “I haven’t seen you in a month, and I had to come home to find you sick and skin and bones.” He leaned in and you could feel his breath on the shell of your ear, “You are mine. I don’t think you truly understand what that means.” He kissed the side of your head, “You are my best friend.” He kissed your forehead, “My responsibility.” He kissed your cheek, “My confidant.” He kissed the tip of your nose, “My lover.” He kissed you jaw. “My partner.” His lips hovered over yours for a brief moment, “My everything.”
His lips smashed onto yours and you could feel all of your little puzzle pieces fit together again. The emptiness you had felt the past month evaporated. You felt whole once more.
There wasn’t anything overly sexual about this kiss. For the first time since you’ve known him, this was the first time Dabi had ever kissed you just to kiss you. And so you let him. You just stood under the water with him and kissed until you started to get lightheaded.
He must have felt your shift because he pulled away from the kiss and pulled you to lean on him. Without another word, he ran a washcloth over your skin and cleaned you up.
You remembered back to the days he’d help you bathe when you couldn’t walk. He’s taken such good care of you without asking for anything in return. So much as changed in the past few months, but there was something about this moment that felt permanent. Like no matter what happens Dabi will always be there to clean you up afterwards.
Dabi could feel the stress and the worry that had piled up over the last month melt away with every rise and fall of your chest. You were safe, you were okay, you were alive, you were in his arms.
Something almost broke in him when he heard the fear in your voice that day. When Bakugo called you after you fell in the pool. He had never felt so fucking helpless. He had a constant eye on your vitals after that. Calling his brother every single time there was even a tiny change. He’d never tell you this, but for a brief moment when Shoto couldn’t get your temperature down he panicked. He couldn’t lose you. Somewhere deep down he knew it was irrational to think you were going to die. But he couldn’t help it. You were sick, and only getting worse and he was thousands of miles away.
There was a constant nagging at the bag of his head of what if he didn’t get back in time. What if he didn’t get to say goodbye. What if
 what if

No. He’s fine now. You’re fine now. He had freaked out for no reason. You’re here, you’re safe, you’re alive, you’re his.
You had eaten the soup, showered, and taken your medication without even a hint of protest. You were being such a good girl for him. Doing everything he asked, never leaving his side.
It was obvious you missed him, and for some reason that made him feel
 pride.
Now he had you curled up with him on the couch eating ice cream as you showed him all the things you had trained Bravo to do. You had a glint in your eyes as you commanded the furball to sit, lay down, roll over, and whatever the fuck else you had taught it.
Dabi had this weird feeling settle over him. Sitting here with you in his lap, as you ate ice cream and played with your dog. It felt like you had become
 a family.
Family
was never a word that had inspired positive feelings for him. He had terrible memories of his old home life. He had a few fond memories of his siblings, maybe even some of his mother. But everything was overshadowed by the hell his father put him through.
But now he could feel that frozen heart of his, start to thaw out. He still struggles convincing himself that he doesn’t deserve you, and sometimes he still thinks you might be better off with Bakugo. But for now, you were his, and he was going to enjoy every second of it.
His hand snaked down and spread out over your stomach and his chin rested on your shoulder. He watched Bravo hop into your lap and had to admit he was a little jealous of the little guy.
“Aw who’s a good boy? Who’s mommy’s good boy?” You squished Bravos cheeks together and kissed his nose.
“Okay enough with the dog. You’ve been loving on the dog since I got home. It’s my turn.”
You scoffed, “Please don’t tell me you feel threatened by a puppy.”
He flipped you over so you were chest to chest with him laying on top of you, caging you to the couch. “Of course I’m not threatened
but I’ve been gone a while and the mutts hogging all the attention.”
You giggled as he nuzzled into your neck demanding that you love him. “I can’t believe big, bad, who’s your daddy, Dabi is jealous of a little puppy.”
Your hands moved, one to his hair and the other snaked under his shirt and scratched his back. He hummed as his lips pressed a quick peck to your jaw. “I missed you
”
Your hands continued to trace patterns up and down his back. “I know. I missed you too.”
His breathing started to slow and he squeezed you closer to him. He started mumbling things as he slipped into the first peaceful sleep he’s had since he left.
“What was that? Dabi you’re mumbling honey.”
He let out a huge sigh and mumbled again only this time slightly louder, “Said ‘m gonna putta baby in you.”

Average (Ninjago Zane X Reader)
No spoilers. Just something I wrote. :)
Believe it or not, you’re the only average person aboard the bounty. No elemental powers, no crazy super intelligence, you’re just a normal human being that happens to know the Ninja. How you met is also pretty normal, you just came across the dojo in search of directions and now you live on the bounty. Sensei Wu was intrigued by you, even if you were normal and kept insisting as such.
“Normal comes in different shapes and sizes, but it’s always based on interpretation. You may find yourself to be normal, but others may think differently,” That’s what he said which convinced you to join, that and the fact he muttered under his breath that the Ninja need more social interactions besides their own tight knit group.
The Ninja were a little wary at first, which is understandable after all they’ve been through. But they came around eventually. You help them out whenever and however you can. Usually it’s small things like doing a chore or making sure the equipment was cleaned and safe for the Ninja.
And it hasn’t gone unnoticed, after you’re done with a chore or whatever you’re doing to help out, one of the Ninja comes up to you and asks if you want to watch them train or want to play video games with them. Ah, bonding experiences.
While you were reminiscing on how close you’ve gotten to the Ninja, you walked to the kitchen to see if you could find something to eat when you noticed the fridge and cabinets were practically bare.
Taking out your phone, you begin writing a list of things you need before texting Jay that you’ll be going to the store. He sends you a thumbs up emoji in response. You pocket your phone and walk out onto the deck, hop over the side and tumble onto the top of a building. Just because you live with the ninja, doesn’t mean you are one.
You get up, dust yourself off, open the roof top and walk down the stairs until you’re on the busy streets of Ninjago city. You open Google Maps and begin walking to the closest store.
________
After around an hour and a half, you walked out of the store with a cartful of bags. You pull out your phone and begin texting Jay to come pick you up with the groceries when someone grabs you from behind, a hand covering your mouth.
Fear flooded your system and you grabbed a hold of the assailants finger before pulling back on it HARD. A male scream rang through the parking lot as you slipped from his grasp and started running. You didn’t make it far before another person jumped out from the corner and swiftly punched you in the face. You stagger for a bit before your body hits the pavement and you soon lose consciousness.
_________
You groan when you open your eyes and realize your body is stiff. You try to stretch but realize you're tied up. Great. And on top of that, a stinging pain is erupting from where you got punched.
You look around and see that there’s a lot of people around. They’re all looking at you, so you can’t exactly try and figure out how to escape even if you wanted to. But you’re too terrified and shocked to be even thinking about escaping.
In a matter of moments, a person emerges from the shadows of the dark room and approaches you with a grin. You could only stare in fear.
“Comfortable? I’d hope so since you’re our money bargain,” He taunted, so clearly he's the leader. Or maybe the right hand man? Again, you couldn’t tell. You swallow as best as you can and open your mouth to speak.
“Wh-What do you want?” You curse under your breath, stuttering and showing fear is what they want
But you can’t exactly help it. The people in the room begin cackling.
“Sounds like someone’s not paying attention, ey gang? You’re a money ticket, and you’re also going to help us prove that we’re the only thing the ninja should care about,” He sneers while poking your forehead. Oh. OH. They’re THOSE kinds of bad guys, the overconfident ones. He backs away from you and looks to the others in the room.
“Be on your guard, they ARE Ninja after all,” And with that he takes his leave. Okay, so this is good. It’s only a matter of time before the ninja find you. Either before or after the ransom call, it wouldn’t matter anyway. But
a small part of you worried they wouldn’t notice.
You shake your head gently to get rid of those thoughts. They’d come. They always do. Your shaking slightly irritated your now bruising cheek which made you inhale sharply. A chorus of quiet chuckles scattered throughout the room.
Seconds pass, them minutes. You waited and waited
until you heard a wonderful sound. Something hitting one of the many gang members and them groaning in pain. You look around in hope.
“It’s the Ni- AGH!” They got kicked into the wall and got knocked out instantly. The entire room was filled with the sounds of fighting while you watched blurs fly around the room. In a matter of minutes, everyone was on the ground either groaning in pain or just flat out unconscious.
“Y/N! Are you alright?!” Cole asks, taking off his hood and coming around to untie you while Zane looks around the room scanning their vitals to ensure no one was faking.
“I’m alright, just glad you’re here,” You stretched after being released from your bonds. You meant what you said, you just wish you could’ve done more.
“It seems everyone is down for the count. I have contacted the authorities to deal with them and their leader,” Zane approaches you two as he speaks and stares at you.
“You are injured,” Cole furrows his brows in slight confusion before checking and gasps.
“What the- You said you were alright!” Cole panicked a little (a lot), you smile sheepishly.
“I am, it just stings a bit is all,” Zane silently looks between you and Cole before speaking.
“We should return to the bounty. The others are worried for your safety,” He turns on his heel and begins to walk out despite Cole trying to protest. You awkwardly follow the two back to the bounty.
___________
When you return to the bounty, you receive a lot of worried yelling from mostly everyone on the ship. Wu and Zane were able to quiet them before things got out of hand.
“Zane, can you take care of Y/N’s injuries?” Wu asks, Zane opens his mouth to answer.
“Y/N WAS INJURED?!” Jay screeched.
“Who was it?! Let me at ‘em!” Nya yelled afterwards.
“Hey, at least leave some for me sis,” Kai adds. Zane sighs and gently takes your hand. He starts to slightly drag you away from the worried chaos that was the Ninja. You walk past the kitchen to see Lloyd was making dinner. He sees you both and waves before returning back to his task.
“How-”
“It was the cart that led us to your location. I asked Jay, Kai and Lloyd to put away the groceries while Cole and I searched for you,” Zane explains as you enter the bathroom. He asks you to sit on the toilet and you do. Zane takes out the first aid kit and grabs the necessary supplies. He pours some hydrogen peroxide onto some cotton pads, turns to you and kneels.
“This may sting,” He mutters before gently patting your bruised cheek, causing you to inhale sharply until the stinging stops.
“Apologies,” He gets up and throws away the cotton pad, returning to the first aid kit and fishing out the appropriate bandaid and ointment. He applies the ointment on the bandaid before gently putting it on your cheek.
“Thank you Zane,” He nods as he puts away the first aid kit.
“In the future, when you’re running errands please take one of us with you,” Zane comments politely.
“Oh. Yeah, I can understand why but
” You trail off, Zane raises a brow in confusion.
“But
?”
“It feels like I’m wasting your time. I’m not like any of you and was only able to live on the ship because Wu thought it would be for the best. You all have big responsibilities to shoulder and I don’t want to make things more difficult for you,” Zane stares at you unsure of how to respond. You start to get uncomfortable and get up.
“S-Sorry, forget I said anything, yeah?”
“No,”
“Huh?” You look at Zane confused.
“No, I will not be simply forgetting something that you’ve seemed to be harboring for quite some time now. I do not believe you are wasting anyone’s time, in fact, time spent with you always makes the others and myself quite happy. You’re always making sure we’re alright and do what you think are the simplest of chores that we simply do not have time for. You brighten our world, Y/N. You always have and always will,”
Zane smiles at you while you stare at him shocked but also happy. He opens his arms offering a hug and you take it, wrapping your arms around the robo boi.
“Thank you Zane,” You mutter. He gently pats your head.
“It is no problem, Y/N,” You both separate and FINALLY exit the bathroom. The scent of Lloyd’s cooking enters your nose as soon as you leave the room.
“Looks like Lloyd’s done! Let’s go before Cole and Kai eat it all,” You joke, speed walking to the dining room. Zane follows with a confused smile, but a smile nonetheless.
