on meljayvik & that bomb tinkering scene

i made a lil comment on this but i wanted to expand on it here since there’s no hard character limit

so, yeah, there’s a lot of what i would consider bs discourse on mel ignoring viktor etc and jayce and manipulation etc whatever blahblahblah i hate that shite because it really isn’t satisfying since it feels like people making claims on very little objective data

mel knows jayce couldnt take the bomb apart and she brings up this hot topic when viktor is in the middle of doing delicate, dangerous work. sure, he stops during it but she isn’t worried at all. she trusts him, jayce trusts him - they know he’s competent and brilliant and works well under pressure (“the resonance will stabilize it. trust me.”) so they are all ok to have this difficult convo during a very dangerous task

i did see some people stating viktor was also considering letting jayce and him die, whick is uhhhh something all right. viktor isn’t a fighter. he’s a scientist. he’s gentle, kind, quirky, but also a risk-taker. he isn’t someone who would hurt others, though. so as fun as that train of thought could be, i don’t buy it since it isn’t in line with who viktor is. i cant believe the same people who advocate for “there is always a choice”!viktor, and other such things about his character would even consider this line of thinking but whatever. it’s fandom 🤷‍♂️

i do think there is some great misunderstanding to characters because of ships and limited screen time to anyone who isn’t violet or jinx but i see the trio as a group who understand each other and work well together. yes, mel didnt realize how close jayce and viktor were before viktor got hospitalized, but she knows his mind and contributions. mel isnt an idiot. she knows shite. she researches and strategizes and she also knows viktor and jayce. just look back at any convo you might have with friends or family in groups of more than 2 people and this is like one glimpse into how the trio might talk to each other at any given time over any topic. not everyone always agrees with each other and sometimes you can tell when you can influence, for example, your dad over your mom regarding getting a pony. viktor’s name isnt on hextech public records so mel knows viktor has given up having a majority say on it (maybe because viktor is all about being behind the scenes, esp as his health continues to spiral, and jayce could also be at fault for not treating viktor like the partner he claims viktor is). sure, there’s some societal issues going on, too, but at this point - whether mel is still influenced by this piltover attitude or not - she cares about jayce enough at this point to value what he values, and one of those big things is viktor (which she undoubtedly knows coz he keeps going to her about him 😅). and when viktor strongly objects she looks at him like someone who wishes she didn’t have to suggest what she’s suggesting since her feelings about her mom/upbringing could be a factor she’s considering.

another big holy shit moment in this scene is mel bringing up heimer and showing he doesn’t always have the sway with jayce that she now does. heimer may have been neglectful of zaun, but now mel seems against zaun, too, and jayce is appearing to be agree with it (and he does, until the prep for the finale battle in s2)

like this scene is also more of a tie with the a bridge scene in showing jayce and viktor not sticking together. viktor is seeing jayce consider him less and less and seeing people from zaun as subhuman. jayce “understanding” grows less and less in his mind and viktor becomes more isolated. how can he trust jayce when jayce may not trust him (“they’re dangerous!” and “i need to think [about this on my own, without further convo with you, viktor, who i claim is my partner]” “defend your people”) and who can he depend on to help zaun if he’s dead and jayce is using hextech to take lives? he’s gotta take the risks. but sky’s death and the hexcore sentiently taking away the use of his leg show him the error of the path he starts and he just accepts death (not that he wants to die) as something that will happen irregardless of what happens after he’s gone. (too bad he just dies and we never see viktor in s2 until his theme comes up at the end when jayce gives him the cosmic hug)

also mel gives viktor another look before telling jayce the choice is his. i think she wishes he was on board coz then they might have come up with another solution but the show is written in a way where hextech is always the answer (i.e., weapons, etc) and not like…personal and political manouvering 😅

plus the trio smile at each other when an alternate option is approved by the council before jinx blows it all up. there’s some kind of dynamic going on here

Teacher Viktor AU #2

Pairing: Viktor/Silco (Arcane) Rating: M C/W: Modern Au, Teacher Viktor, Past Zaundads, Misgendering/Deadnaming mention, Past Jayvik, Dealing With Relationship Trauma

Vander and Silco have separated, with Powder choosing to go with Silco and Vi with Vander.

Viktor is Powder's new science teacher.

Silco meets him when Powder gets in trouble for stealing from the lab.

Powder says that she only took the stuff because her Dad wouldn't buy her some of her own and Silco flushes because he never said he wouldn't. Just not right that minute!

Viktor offers her use of the lab after school while he's grading papers etc

and Silco always comes and picks her up but one time he can't.

Viktor drives her home and Jinx tells him to stay for dinner and Viktor doesn't want to intrude but Silco is like "nah come on"

Its an easy dish of store-bought meatballs, pasta and sauce, and pre-prepped veg from the freezer. Silco literally only got in the door before Viktor and Powder pulled up outside.

Viktor helps in the kitchen.

Viktor offers to get the pans ready and boil the kettle while Silco fetches the veg from the freezer. 

Powder dresses the table.

She sits Silco and Viktor next to each other.

Jinx crashes afterwards and Viktor kinda stalls getting his things together until Silco invites him to have one last drink.

Viktor knows he shouldn't since he's driving, but he hasn't eaten so well in a while -- purely 'cause he forgets. And um. It was nice. Being social. He doesn't really get invited out much by colleagues.

Also the company is very pleasant

and handsome

What happened to his eye is why he and Vander separated. They were out for their anniversary, Vander got too drunk and started a bar fight because someone looked at Silco wrong, and Silco ended up with a shard of glass slicing down his face when he tried to break it up.

It was the other guy, but Silco still blames Vander

More than anything, Silco is angry that Vander's actions meant Vi and Powder/Jinx had to see another parent hurt (when they came to see him in the hospital). Because Powder was terrified.

Vi sided with Vander over what happened, which stung.

Powder is NB and goes by Jinx now but Vi and Vander never respected her new name/pronouns.

That's another reason she stayed with Silco.

Silco always had a feeling about Jinx, but he let her come out on their own. They came out to him first.

His support was the reason she was brave enough to come out to the others, but then it didn't go well at all.

Silco has no qualms about saying how perfect they are no matter what.

When they're in the car after coming out to Vander and Vi and Jinx is upset, Silco does his "Don't cry. You're perfect."

Painful irony is Vi realising they're NB years later

Jinx telling them to fuck off when they try to apologize. That Jinx trusted them and they threw it back at her

Vi never got used to calling them Jinx and doesn't put in the effort even after apologizing

Silco cries for the first time since he was a kid the night that he and Vander separate. But not until Jinx cries themself to sleep against his middle.

he doesn't cry hard, but he cries. A slow drip of tears as he strokes Jinx's hair

The tear duct was torn when he was slashed with the glass. It didn't heal properly, so it burns when he cries

Silco not being emotionally ready for anything more than a friend with Viktor, and feeling a little guiltier every time Jinx asks Viktor to stay for dinner.

Jinx wants him to date.

He knows that.

But a large part of him is still in love with Vander.

Viktor would understand if he knew because his former fiancé cheated on him

Viktor had an episode at home while Jayce was out fucking Mel and Jayce's story didn't add up as to why he wasn't there because Jayce said he was working and when they tried to contact him about Viktor, he wasn't there

it was at his old school, which he's left since leaving Jayce. Because they'd met at the cafe nearby and memories were too painful.

Jinx asking during one of the dinners at theirs, "You're single, aren't you" and kind of make a suggestive look between the two of them.

And Viktor answering, "I am now, yes."

But its the way he says it that catches Silco's attention. The tightness. The unspoken pain.

Silco still having his wedding band, wearing it on a chain around his neck.

"Now? Were you not?"

"Jinx, please"

"No, it's alright. I was engaged but, he wasn't there when I needed him most."

Jinx finally subsiding because the comment reminded her of Vander and Vi not supporting them.

Viktor offers to explain during their drinks later and Silco says he doesn't have to but Viktor says he wants to.

Viktor sits and goes over it all and when he's finishing up a few tears end up slipping and Silco kneels in front of him and wipes them from his cheek with his thumb. Without thinking, Viktor closes the distance and kisses him, but freaks out a bit and leaves once he realizes what he'd done.

Silco, for his part, is still reeling.

They both agonize over the kiss for weeks.

It also happens just before a school break so theres no reason for them to see each other either

Silco touches his wedding band a lot as he agonizes over the kiss. Because he wants to do it again. But he isn't ready. And he knows it wouldn't be fair on Viktor.

Even though he's separated, he's still legally married.

Vander refuses to sign the papers and Silco never had a reason to push him to And maybe kinda hoped he would find a way to forgive him

Meanwhile Viktor is agonizing because he thinks he made a fool of himself

Jinx sees Silco messing with the ring and casually says "I know which one calls me by my name. Just sayin."

Silco driving to the school a few days before the kids are due back, knowing the staff will be prepping, hoping he'll catch Viktor at a free moment.

He asks around a bit then finds him alone in his classroom/lab and hesitates for what seems like forever before knocking.

Viktor being a ball of hopeful worry as soon as he sees him.

Silco barely opens his mouth before Viktor is babbling an apology.

He's had the papers to transfer Jinx out of his class for days but can't bring himself to do it.

Silco deciding to just take the plunge. Rushes forward. Kisses him.

Jinx, Sevika, and Isha

Isha has been obsessed with Five Nights at Freddy's and has been begging Jinx for days on end to do a costume about it. Jinx, obviously, ends up caving in.

Jinx tries to get Ekko to join in but he refused

Isha is dressed up as the crying child, Jinx put together a full Springtrap cosplay and Sevika is "a night guard" ( Wearing a purple wifepleaser she did Not want a part of this )

Jinx keeps sneaking behind corners and scaring the shit out of Vi. She tried to scare Jayce and nearly lost her tooth. He feels a little bit bad about it

She's making everyone watch the FNAF movie and giggling every time someone begs to watch something else. It's too cringe for them I fear. Isha is having the time of her goddamn life frankly.

Sevika brings purple themed drinks that only she drinks because it's JUST straight up whiskey she put purple food dye into. It's bad whiskey too.

Jayce, Caitlyn, and Vi

They dressed up as Stu and Billy from the original Scream movie. Originally they were just going to do Ghostface but Jayce really wanted to show his face. Vi decided to drag Caitlyn into being their Sidney.

Jayce keeps spilling shit onto his sweater and going "well this works anyway." His sweater which originally just had a little bit of red on it is basically covered in wine by the end of the night.

Vi keeps smearing the fake blood onto everything. Caitlyn's face still has red handprints by the next day. Vi says she'll clean it off and instead makes it worse.

They watch the original Scream and Jayce keeps pausing to talk about actor trivia and VI just unpauses while he isn't looking. Viktor is the ONLY ONE listening to him.

They brought Ghostface themed cupcakes that Caitlyn made with red icing on the inside. They're absolutely way too sweet and Vi has like 3.

Jayce brought a red sangria that is one of the more popular drinks. He says he made it himself but he bought a gallon like a few hours before because he tried and FAILED REAL BAD at making sangria.

Viktor

Was going to be Lawrence Gordon but only an hour before the party he realized no one would get his costume. He scrapped together a very shitty House M.D. cosplay in like 30 minutes.

He's only there because Jayce begged him for like an hour to come with him. He's having a fun time though.

Suggests they watch Saw because he loves describing how medically inaccurate everything is. This is also because Jayce keeps hiding in his shoulder whenever anything gross comes on screen.

He's considering convincing Jayce to dress up as Adam from the Saw movies. This is because he's seen the musical and he is, in fact, gay.

This is ruined by Jinx going "me fr" anytime Amanda is on screen and asking if she can dress up as Amanda with them. She's doing this on purpose.

I think Jinx tries to scare him and he just stares at her so unamused. It works one time on ACCIDENT and he throws the bottle of pills straight at her forehead.

He brought candy cigarettes because, again, his original costume was for Saw. Now it just seems lame. Vi chews on them so unsettlingly

Mel

Jessica Rabbit. She has the best costume in the entire party and no one can stop complementing her. She brought a little rabbit plushie and allows Isha to play with it. She ends up just letting her have it after everything.

She did not get the memo this was supposed to be about like horror movies. She's relieved when Viktor comes and he's just House M.D.

I think about halfway through she changes into a cowgirl costume. This was always the plan because that dress is incredibly uncomfortable. She comes out of the bathroom and everyone cheers.

She's not fully paying attention to whatever movies they're watching. However, she does make them watch Oh Brother Where Art Thou. Everyone kinda skitters off besides her, Jayce, and Viktor. I think they all fall asleep against one another watching it.

She brought gummy ropes as lasso and sliders shaped like bunnies.

Ekko

He's a huge Good Omens fan I know it in my heart and soul. He dresses up as Crowley. He made a leather jacket that has fake wings on the back and even has snake eye contacts.

He makes everyone watch the first episode of Good Omens and Viktor gets HOOKED so fast. Jayce ends up watching the whole show on his own time and realizes things about himself.

I think he was originally planning to be Doctor Who but Viktor was already planning to play a doctor so he went with Crowley instead.

He shows off his signed poster by David Tennent and Jayce is SO jealous

They're talking about their favorite actors for most of the night. They end up eventually planning to go to a convention together at some point. They're going to dress up as Mandalorians because they're nerds

I think Ekko is like, a professional cosplayer. He shows off his Anakin cosplay, his Cal Kestis cosplay with a functioning puppet BD-1, his old My Hero Academia cosplays... Jayce starts to get really into it

how did jayce find out viktor was in the hospital? (did he like go and get some water and an assistant was like hey your bro is down? did he feel it like a partner-to-partner connection?)

did vi ever mention to jayce that they were the ones who robbed his apartment (and therefore set in motion literally everything) or did jayce just mention it and one point and vi was like nope. never letting him know.

how did jesus!viktor 1.0 get out of Piltover with no one really noticing? he was naked, purple and glowing. had one sheet and a giant shepherd's crook. surely someone saw him pass and was like...was that the guy who helped Jayce Talis build the hexgates?

Mel origin story of when she got to Piltover. Actually just more Mel. Mel kicking ass and taking names politically before she even gets the magic upgrade. Yeah. I want to know more about her. Mel <3.

Sky's journey from Zaun to Piltover. Did she have a similar story to Viktor (basically pretending you were always there)? Heard Jayce/Viktor hired her to promote Zaun connections but what else?

Jayvik ramble

i don't think jayce and viktor loved each other romantically.

It was love, god it was love, but not romantic tension. They didn't need to kiss or anything of the sort to show their affection, said affection just was.

I'm not gonna try to say they didn't love each other because gahdamn you'd have to be blind to think they didn't, but there wasn't much romance there I think. Maybe for little moments, but if there was any it fizzled in and out. It was something greater than friendship, greater than partnership, greater than romance.

It's kinda shown blatantly too because their plotline is similar to that of vi and jinx's in one major way: they are, at least for some time, both cycles of moral obligation (which I could yap about forever). I'm not saying that that means that their relationship is inherently brotherly, but it's certainly not the same as romantic love. The entire show is kick-started by future timeline viktor's desire to undo his wrongdoings (and thus saving jayce's life as a child). After that, once Viktor and jayce meet in their timeline, they create hextech and the cycle begins. Jayce becomes a counselor, viktor's illness progresses, jayce feels guilt for doing things outside of work with viktor while also knowing he has outside duties. So at this point, jayce's priorities are split between the Mel+council and Viktor+hextech while viktor's were entirely directed towards the idea of eradication of flaws. That is, until he kills sky. Then jayce kills the kid and the two of them entire a mini cycle of "to hextech or not to hextech."

It's from then on that it's made obvious that the two of them are misaligned: viktor fixes his leg and begins to embody perfection, and once jayce becomes a member of the council he is the physical and societal embodiment of progress. Viktor wanted to rid the world of all imperfections, jayce welcomed and understood imperfections and hoped to heal the division between worlds. He didn't want to get rid of pain, he just wanted to heal it.

Another thing is the unequal balance between the two of them. Once they successfully created hextech, they were never truly equal again until they died together. From then on until Vik leaves his little cocoon Jayce is pretty much always always staged as higher or bigger than Viktor, and not just physically (because he is physically bigger than Mel and yet she still had moments in the earlier episodes where she was staged/lighted higher because had more power than he did). Once Viktor leaves the cocoon they are equal for moments, and then once he walks off into the unknown and jayce is left behind, he begins to look bigger, greater, and then obviously the jesus arc begins and Viktor becomes physically larger than jayce while also being very obviously more powerful. From that point on they do not become a partnership of equals again till they touch heads and skip off into the sunset.

Another big thing is that Viktor states that "There is no prize to perfection only an end to pursuit. In all timelines, in all possibilities. Only you [jayce], can show me this." That sounds almost romantic adjacent until you think about it and realize that Viktor interacted with quite literally nobody else, and that even if he did Jayce would still forever be the only person who understood the extent of hextech's power because he'd witnessed it from the start.

Now these sound like a bunch of random points to bring up but Arcane does a really good job of having actions and sentiments mirror each other (for better or worse) and it's shown. Their misalignment of values and the power difference between them mirror the state of their relationship. Their priorities and morals weren't in tune. That doesn't mean that they can't still love each other, but it kinda shows how a relationship between them just doesn't really work.

In practically every other truly loving relationship, official or not, and romantic or not, love was the means to which every other pursuit had to end (Mel's mercy on Ambessa, Jinx and Vi's entire relationship, Caitlin coming back to Vi, Ekko for some reason forgetting about his tree for Jinx/Powder, Singe doing it all for his daughter, Silco and Jinx's whole relationship, etc). But whatever love Jayvik shared wasn't enough to stop their outside pursuits because there was always something they coveted more. Funnily enough, that was also Ambessa's hamartia (she coveted vengeance and power over love and used family as an excuse) and her death kind of foretells theirs. But anyway, for a long while they had bigger things in mind than being together. Hell, they were going to kill each other. Other characters tried to kill people they cared about but they always hesitated. Always.

Love didn't trump all with jayvik.

Arcane also literally shows us what a romantic relationship should/does look like in the show by giving us caitvi, mel and jayce, even alternate dimension powder and ekko. When you look at jayvik then look at the other big obvious canonical relationships (caitvi and mel and jayce) there is less of the same kind of misalignment. Cait and vi fought often but they were always equals. This dynamic changed one major time off the top of my head—when caitlyn hit vi—and only for a moment. Even when vi was in prison, even when vi left Cait in season one after the council meeting, even when cait began her dictator arc, they were still equals. Also, they had no moral obligation towards each other; in fact, they should have been morally obligated to obliterate each other and they didn't. Cait and vi made the choice to love each other. Vik and Jayce were intricately and unavoidably bound together; they were predestined, and they were doomed. There was no choice to be made there.

To look at the other big canon relationship (and cause you kinda have to acknowledge he has an actual girlfriend), I think jayce loved mel genuinely. I also think she loved him too. There was symbolism behind their relationship, obviously, because mel started off the relationship by using him for political gain and he just wanted to change the world through science (well, magic), but, like ambessa stated, she'd grown fond of him. Through season one, jayce and Mel's relationship is used as a parallel to jayce and viktor's (the whole scene where they do the nasty while Viktor is literally dying), but this isn't done in season two like, at all (duh because Viktor was busy starting a cult, but there's more to it because that's a parallel they could have continued with but they didn't) because they became more aligned while jayce and Viktor became more opposed. Once jayce established himself as a true member of the council (at the end of season one), Mel and Jayce's power difference ceased to be. Mel had no reasons to hold on to Jayce anymore, and the same was true vice versa. They could've moved on and left each other, but they didn't. The two moments in which they seem to be growing apart are when jayce questions Mel's honesty in the council room and during the last conversation between the two of them in the show, but neither of those moments can be attributed to a faltering in their relationship: the prior was due to jayce's skepticism and rage due to what he'd been through in the weeks (possibly longer) before and the latter was due to (in my opinion) a shoddy and rushed scene on the writer's part. Both of them were preoccupied with the dramatic changes in their lives. (and they probably should have had an actual conversation about what they'd gone through like they had with literally every other issue they'd encountered in the show, but that could just be part of the writer's failure to fully flesh out Mel's powers/jayce's mental state (which should have been fleshed out too because he became so much less erratic so fast and that was honestly pretty strange))

I'm aware that people can and do love (romantically) two people at once but I just don't think that's what was happening with jayce and jayvik.

It started with jayce and viktor in heimerdinger's lab in season one. It had to end with them.

But they weren't in love.

Can I just say Ekko is the most perfect and flawless character ever created and now I wish he and Viktor and Jinx could have all met somehow and done cool science stuff together. But this frame here genuinely makes me so sad. I’m crushed. But also, I like when conflicting circumstances tear characters apart, to me. I like the tragedy. So I’m glad in our Ekko’s universe, they didn’t stay together. It would be so out-of-character for my girl Jinx.

Also I like that it wasn’t just a boring fan-service episode. It proved a point, and we also had Jayce’s fun adventures in Nightmarefuelworld. ANDD THE Z-DRIVE, WOOOOOO!!!!

Jinx was already perfect, but so is Powder.

I’ve always hated romance, whether it was real life, or cinema. But this scene was incredible. I love them so goddamn much. Actually sickens me. They are everything to me.

Viktor and Jayce’s fight scene and…. Whatever that ending was, was gayer and more erotic than anything Violyn could fathom. Sorry guys. What the Hell was he doing cupping his face like that, wrapping his legs around him, faces mere centimetres away, all without actually being physically there but also exploding together in the astral plane?? The way he said ‘As partners’?? Likeeee, I ain’t never seen hand-to-hand combat like that. Look at these soulmates. Just as a platonic relationship I love it, and it’s wayyyy gayer than anything else. He chose dying with his space boyfriend over the insanely gorgeous Mel, who also got a fabulous glow up, is undoubtedly the hottest character in the show, ANDDDD has OP Arcane talents. Bravo Jayce, you simultaneously fumbled and won and disintegrated into nothing with your astronomical lab ‘partner’. Singed was right- One does unspeakable acts for love.

We got Viktor in Mel’s eyeshadow before G.T.A.6.. Slay my King. Thank you for your pretty little hallucinations, Jayce.

Alsoo, let us pay respects to this fine Yordle who waited over 100 years for Ekko, sure can sing, and sacrificed himself so that Ekko could get back to his right world.

I’m glad that at least ONE of my favourite characters had a happy ending. Singed wasn’t the most ethical scientist, but he sure is a Hell of a father for doing all that.

Sevika in the Council. She finally beat Silco’s corrupt underground empire and overcame the oppression Vander faced. She finally understood how he felt when she betrayed him, after the Zaunites wouldn’t listen to her, and now she can do something about it. So happy for her. She deserves it. The true leader of Zaun, everyone.

Alsoo, I’m a strong believer in the ‘Jinx is alive theory.

More critically however, I think there were too many needle drops (however good they were), the pacing was pretty rushed compared to Season One which was pure perfection, and I wish we got something more similar to League Viktor, because now Only-Arcane fans will not understand the true meaning of Glorious Evolution. I think Viktor’s character arc was over-simplified and I just feel empty about it. Kinda disappointed. He means so much to me. But damnnnn Jayce got validated as HELLLL. No complaints there. I hate him in League but always liked him in Arcane up till episode 6. Bro was just an idealist. Also their ending was ambiguous did they die together or just remain in the astral plane, forever integrated within the arcane. If Singed could save Orianna, can’t he find their corpses somewhere and save them?? I need cyborg Viktor. I wish we had the adventures of Blitzcrank and his cyborg father. I’m also bothered by that continuity error about Vander’s betrayal and when exactly it takes place. Also don’t like what they did with Silco’s character, in Ekko’s alternate world AND in the original world, because how could he just forgive Vander like that after all the hate he was always full of?? I’m sure there’s an explanation, but they didn’t have enough time to go into it.

This is the actual best show I have ever seen personally. Thanks for the stunning writing, flawless art-style, loveable characters and impeccable queer/disabled/POC representation. No other show has ever moved me so much. I hope Fortiche continues to make more series like this in the future. I love Runeterra and its Lore so much.

Caitlyn Kiramman #5: Jinx - Obsession, Fixation & Escalation

Newton’s Third Law states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. That forces come in pairs, and without their coupling birds would not fly, fish would not swim, and guns would not fire.

Blue hair, keen eyes, sharp minds, and, by the end, Piltover and Zaun’s foremost instruments of war. Unwitting symbols of a protracted conflict long before their time, yet a conflict determined to bury them both, where tragedy becomes the catalyst for mutation into something – someone – altogether darker.

From the very start they are fated to clash, Jinx’s undercity chaos the perfect lure for Topside’s greatest detective. The great conspiracy, Jayce almost mocks it when he says it, but Caitlyn has already established the groundwork of something all too real, already has started piecing together the puzzle of Silco’s great criminial enterprise. One has to wonder just how long she had been working on it up to that point, and at what age she began the project.

Yet it isn’t quite Silco who lies at the heart of her tapestry of notes and maps. One explosive night and the first true thread comes loose, where Caitlyn can't help but pull on it, unravelling it all until she finds her, the true subject of her investigation, the source of her anguish and ruin, and the one to help the young enforcer discover her own touch of violent madness.

ATTRACTION / REPULSION:

They are, I would agree, quite similar in a lot of ways. I would not go so far to say they are effectively the same person, as this does a disservice to their uniqueness as individuals, yet I can also imagine them being very close friends had they grown up together, sharing and supporting each other in their own nerdy hobbies and interests. Alas, speculative optimism is an Arcane fan’s stock-in-trade.

It can be hard to see the similarities on first viewing, easy to dismiss when you see how differently they present. Jinx has always benefited from having a larger-than-life persona, full of wit and chaotic charm to rally fans to her side. Conversely Caitlyn has a much more reserved personality by comparison, and tends to be much more selective as to where and when to expose her feelings, especially in the second season.

So, what do Arcane’s most prodigious gunslingers actually have in common? Well, by my reckoning we have the following if not more:

A longing to prove themselves, Powder with her inventions, Caitlyn with her investigations.

A desire to be of use to others through their pursuits.

Both clearly value their freedom and independence, yet both are routinely reminded of their roles in something larger, something that will inevitably overtake and trap them.

Leashed by familial expectations and a desire to break free of them.

Met with tragedy and yet both are moulded into something stronger and more dangerous as a result.

Both are drawn into the hands of powerful parental figures determined to use them for their own ends.

Equally wilful and impulsive, both susceptible to fits of rage and anger, capable of unflinching brutality when their ire is raised.

Fear of looking/being weak, of feeling powerless, both pursue dangerous avenues to try and shed this notion of weakness.

Both are misfits and troublemakers, balls of chaos thrown into the world from the opposite ends, casting great tides in fate’s capricious waters. Breaking the rules is in their DNA and even the champion of the law often flouts in when expedient or simply desirable.

They both, for most of the show, are unable to see the humanity in their opposite, blinded by a distorted view of the other, and fear of what the other will do to Vi, the one person they both share affection for.

Both ultimately have a deep need to feel loved, or rather, to be understood. They both lapse into self-hatred for large parts of the story when by themselves, both becoming aware of the wrongness they perpetrate and struggle to reconcile a way out.

Yet both are brave, neither back down nor stint when faced with conflict. Both are smart tacticians, utilising whatever tools are at their disposal to gain the upper hand.

Both are obsessives, when either latches onto something, they do not let go and heaven help anyone, family, friend or foe, who tries to stand in their way.

NEMESIS:

And there is the point, as Vi observes of Caitlyn in S1E8, this idea of obsession.

Following the Progress Day attack in S1E4, Jayce’s first question to Caitlyn is to ask how she’s feeling, understandable given she did almost die. The fact that she doesn’t answer, but instead goes straight to talking about the case, is the first clear sign of this central pillar to her personality. All Jinx’s attack did was light a fire that will propel Caitlyn into action in direct response. Action, reaction.

So we then see Caitlyn’s fixation come to life in earnest. Within the first episode of her as an adult, to go off on her own, forge release papers, break someone out of prison and travel into the undercity with a potentially dangerous stranger to pursue her mission.

Is it any surprise, is it at all hard to believe that after all she suffers at her hands, that someone this single minded and driven and willing to break the rules would become so unhinged in pursuing Jinx?

With her own mother murdered at Jinx’s hands, how could her obsession not devolve into an all-consuming hatred? Over the course of the first season Caitlyn is fed every motivation possible to go after her, from all the murders to the loss of the gem, topped off with kidnap, torture and a despairing cry that only Vi’s ears ever hear.

Such a mind can only take so much, and as such in S2E1 she’s already daydreaming a murder of her own in reply, in a cold scene of darkness where nothing lives, where her favourite violet petals all lie dead at her feet.

Cait is even misremembering Jinx’s laugh into something more sinister, fantasizing her destruction in such a way that Jayce is clearly caught off guard by it. She was already obsessed before, but what was a slightly more abstract quest for justice is now so deeply personal that all other considerations begin fall by the wayside. Her suffering amplifying the emotional investment to breaking point, where malignant emotions start to pour in through the cracks.

The thing is Caitlyn isn’t naturally vengeful or cruel. Her instinct isn’t to hate, her natural state is, more than anything, empathetic and kind. What brings her low is the lethal combination of her grief and her guilt coupled to her more obsessive traits, resulting in an escalating, single minded drive to end the nightmare at any cost. That’s not even mentioning Ambessa’s influence, manipulating events to devastate an already fragile psyche post rocket attack.

Then there other elements to factor in. Her desire to prove herself, her sense of responsibility to others growing exponentially as the death toll rises. The burden of leadership, the duty to protect, the eyes of an entire city resting upon her, crying for blood, and into her hand is offered the knife.

The problem with her hatred, however, is that it is based around a very unique set of circumstances, relates to a single individual and largely runs counter to who she is at heart, where her conscience and better nature will inevitably reassert itself. As such it requires consistent fueling to keep it alive, and as events drag out, the harder it becomes, to Ambessa's detriment, to find the necessary material for Caitlyn’s vengeful combustion.

The absence of Jinx from public life is key here to helping Caitlyn recover herself. Without anything to act upon she’s left to stew and introspect. Without any real leads her mind has more room for thoughts of herself, of Vi, of how far she’s fallen. There’s absolutely no pleasure or joy in her at this point, and instead she comes across as utterly miserable and lonely. So bereft is she that any scent of Jinx is seized upon ravenously, exactly like a blood starved vampire.

Caitlyn’s whole vampire look is actually both aesthetically and narratively perfect. It beautifully ties together her obsessive traits with the classic tropes of endless longing you get with the aristocratic vampire archetype.

With both her obsessions missing she comes over all brooding and dark, full of dour yearning and hunger. That and it's my favourite look of hers in the series (S2 Act3 just a tiny smidge behind).

So as time goes on her hatred starts to stutter, and her own moral injuries plague the mind more until the opportunity arises to finally remember what matters, who she is and why she does what she does.

In so doing she discovers that the bloodthirsty beast is just a dad who loves his kids, the monster of Jinx in her mind, just a daughter like her. Seeing them together with Vi and Isha, having spent so much time feeling alone would have an effect I think. Jinx saving her life, Jinx seeing Caitlyn come through for Vi, and by extension Vander and herself. While not an end to her antipathy, nor a sign of forgiveness, it is nonetheless the final bit of perspective Caitlyn needs to take the final steps towards letting her hate die out.

Then we have the one time (the one time!) that they truly talk to one another, that singular moment of calm in which to speak, we get an all too brief yet vital sharing of humanity and vulnerability, of regret and remorse. A quiet, exhausted end to a lot of sound and fury.

By this point I believe they understand each other far pretty well for two who have barely said a word to the other. “She can’t accept what you and I know, there are no happy endings” “no amount of good deeds can undo our crimes” it may be grasping on my part, but they do give the impression that they both share similar feelings of guilt and shame for their actions, in which Vi’s forgiveness and Ekko’s lifesaving support are ultimately what help them to reconcile those feelings and a way to forgive themselves.

And so the obsession dies, or rather, it doesn’t quite, does it?

Jinx’s arrival at the final battle is shot in such a way as to acknowledge that something certainly remains between the two. First full-face reveal has Jinx looking down, cut straight to Caitlyn looking up. That was a choice and, assuming they were looking at each other, the final glimpse they have before the end. A delicious moment with any number of potential interpretations.

Then finally post-battle, sometime after where the scars are just about starting to heal and Caitlyn is pouring over the hex gate maps for escape routes, jinx bomb fragment in hand. She and Vi share a few things in common, but here they share this particular problem with us also, with those of us for who blue next to red will forever have one true meaning.

The problem in letting go. Our girl just can’t stop, just can’t help herself. Forever Jinx’s number one fan.

In her rush to play chess with everyone, Ambessa made the critical error of making Catilyn one of her pawns, because after pushing her to the edge of the board, she became a queen.

Jinx/Powder and Ekko. Those two were supposed to be best friends back when they were kids and it's a pity that all we got from this was some glimpses in a music video, some jabs as teens/young adults and a flashback-esque scene. I think it would also make their fight scenes hit harder.

I just love their chemistry so much! Their whole dynamic is really great. It looks like they are so different and like it wouldn't/shouldn't work but still it does, because of their differences and because at their core they're both so similar.

I honestly don't know ifni can explain it any better. I just think they're really neat!

Pretty much the same as yours. They end up being happily in a relationship, after solving the whole situation with Jinx and while working through their traumas.

Scene 1. "You're hot, cupcake." I don't think this one needs an explanation.

Scene 2. Caitlyn caring for Vi after Sevika stabs her. This type of scenes is always a win for me in whatever kind of relationship and the tenderness Caitlyn show to Vi at this moment, while Vi is so adamant about refusing it, but ultimately accepts it... God I love it!

This part especially!!!

Scene 3. That scene of them in Caitlyn's bedroom. Them lying together, the softness of their voices, Vi being vulnerable with Cait, talking to her about a happy memory and about her guilt and Cait offering nothing but gentleness...

I mean look at the way she's touching her! And how Vi looks at her!!!

14. which tropes I think describe them the best.

Class divide, definitely, and opposites attract. Also, I think princess and knight suits them really well.

Caitlyn:

1). why I love them, like them or hate them.

Caitlyn is to me one of the most genuine characters in Arcane, especially when you compare her to the rest of the people in Piltover. Her honesty and humility and kindness really set her apart from nearly everyone surrounding her, along with her willingness to do stuff on her own instead of having someone else do it for her. As she states herself, she is a misfit and I love her for that!

8. a headcanon I have about this character.

Since that shooting competition and her talk with Sheriff Grayson, Caitlyn started idolizing her. Grayson maybe even took her under her wing for a while (I'm saying maybe because we don't know exactly when that competition took place).

10. if I liked them immediately or if took a while before I warmed up to their character. Alternatively, if I disliked them immediately or if they lost my trust as their story progressed.

I kinda liked her from the beginning. I thought she was adorable as a kid (massive props to her voice actress). But she elevated to favorite status as the story was progressing. When we first met her as a child I thought she would be kind of like a side character and that we wouldn't be seeing much of her, and boy am I glad I was proven wrong!

13. how I'd do it if they had to be written out of the story.

From what I understand, this means how I would change the story if I had to remove Caitlyn.

Hmmm... pretty tough. Story-wise, Caitlyn is really important. She breaks Vi out of prison, she has connections to the council, thus being able to actually remind them that the people of the Undercity exists, because we know they wouldn't on their own...

In that case, I think a change I would make, would be Vi breaking out of Stillwater herself after hearing Silco's goon complain about this blue-haired girl with the bombs and realizes that's her sister. She kicks his ass like in canon, basically starting a riot, and into the chaos she fights her way out. She almost escapes, but she is stopped bybthe guy in the entrance. She puts up a fight again, but since she knows she can't fight anymore, she pretends to get beaten to death so they dump her body in the water. When they do, she swims to the other side and voila, Vi is back.

Now the rest for a good part goes as in canon. Vi returns to the lanes, she gets her jacket and her food, she goes to the brothel for info, confronts Sevika and when she gets stabbed, instead of Caitlyn, Ekko's the one who saves her. He saw her entering the Undercity after her escape and followed her. He brings her to his hideout, with the rest of the firelights, they tend to her wound and he fills her in on what happened during her absence. Vi of course doesn't really accept that her sister has changed and insists she can help her.

Meanwhile, like in canon Sevika tells Jinx about Vi being back, as a chance to get rid of her. Jinx goes out and the iconic flare scene takes place.

At the same time, after Ekko and some of the fireflies leave, Vi sneaks out and follows them, but then sees the smoke and goes up to find her sister.

The two reunite, but then Ekko and the others show up, a fight breaks out and Vi tries to get them all to stop, even yelling "Powder, that's Ekko!" And her responding "Yeah, no shit!" or something like that. Vi gets knocked down again, either by accident, by trying to get Jinx to stop shooting , which ends with her slamming her machine gun on her face (similarly like how she did with Caitlyn) and that makes her freeze for a moment like "Holy shit I hurt Vi!". The firelights take advantage of this, overpower her and take both her and Vi back in their hideout.

That's all I could think of so far. Come to think of it, I think it would be a good idea for a fanfic!

#The way they completely forgot about the conflict btw Zaun and Piltover.

Yes, thank you, this is something I can argue with.

So there are layers to this.

How deep was the understanding of class struggle to begin with? I would say not very deep. There was a relationship of economic exploitation that was alluded to (the mines) but most of the characters we see were not miners, and weren't being economically exploited by Piltover. And the three main ways of responding to oppression didn't reflect an understanding of class struggle either. There was a) Vander. Who's first idea was to start a bar and I guess an independent business community? That is not class struggle. And yeah he led a rebellion but... to what end? What were the concrete demands? b) Silco. Who had some absolute banger lines of dialogue. But whose tactics (starting a drug empire and turning people into drugged-up zombie fighters) actually disempowered average Zaunites. and c) The Firelights. Who started an isolated commune rather than directly organizing within the population. And who seemed to see Silco as the main enemy more than Piltover. You see this again when Vi confronts the council in s1, and her issue with them is not that they're exploiting and oppressing Zaun, her issue is that they aren't sending police after Silco. So where was the class struggle supposed to come from? Honestly, Sevika was the only one who expressed real revolutionary sentiment, and the show made a point of demonstating that she was not getting much traction.

Where did the show indicate it was going with the conflict between Zaun and Piltover? In the very first scene, in the midst of the worst conflict between the two cities, Powder is singing about a "friend across the river". Vi and Caitlyn's entire relationship is representative of the possibility of reconciliation between the two cities. When Jayce meets with Silco at the end of s1, they mention how the two cities came together in the first place to face threats from outside their walls. I think, looking back on s1, it was pretty clear which direction the show was headed in.

I would also point out the way that the show deals with themes of duality. There's Viktor's monologue about the two sides of humanity, there's what Jinx says to Vi about the two of them always being together even when they're apart, etc. The nature of duality as dealt with on the show is that the two sides are inseparable. Each side conditions and shapes the other. Each side only exists as such because of the other. So one cannot overcome or triumph over the other, they can only continue to exist in tension with one another.

Does coming together to face an outside threat constitute "forgetting" about the conflict? I would say not. It is a way of temporarily eliding the conflict, but the conflict never went away. It was a significant moment when a few people from the undercity came to join the enforcers; it was significant because bad blood still existed between them. More importantly, the majority of Zaunites did not join up with the enforcers, but instead fought through their own organization and with their own means - they did not trust Piltover to lead them in battle and fought for themselves. Then after the battle, tensions continue, as demonstrated by the shot of Sevika at the council. The conflict between Zaun and Piltover is not forgotten - it's just not resolved.

Arcane is not a traditional TV show where chunks of the season are written at various times and the writers can respond to how they feel the story is going and the audience reception, or where the writers can only break half a season at a time without having a clear idea of where it's going to end. Season 2 was written and produced as a unified whole. Nothing was "forgotten" or "dropped". Things may not have gone the way certain audience members wanted them to, but that's not the same thing. There was a plan for all the elements of the story, and that story was executed.

So yeah, I think the idea that "they forgot about the conflicts between Zaun and Piltover" is a mistake on multiple level. Thank you for leaving tags I could reply to.

🕷 He actually comes home that night because even though you're mad at him, he doesn't want to be away from you

🕷 So he waits to come home when you're asleep and crawls into bed with you, kissing the top of your head

🕷 Viktor does small things for you to make you soften up a bit such as turning up the heat in the apartment when he knows you're coming home soon and it's cold outside

🕷 When you're really not budging, he makes you stay put in whatever room you're in until you two make up

🕷 He's constantly trying to break out of the mentality since dating you but old habits die hard

—SILCO one thing’s for sure, if you two will argue, silco will always stick with his thoughts. he has more power, and his vision for zaun often scares you because of what could happen when war ensues. silco would never threaten you, but if you ever did something to sabotage his vision, you’d imagine the worst and eventually avoid further arguments with him. when he realizes that it’s not only his work that terrifies you, but also himself. you two have a one-on-one heartfelt talk, assuring that he’ll get hurt first before you do.

—VIKTOR you and viktor could be arguing over the littlest things, like him staying up too late in the lab, or the lack of attention and time he has for you. you learn that viktor has a low frustration tolerance and he’ll snap at you if you try to pursue the argument. you notice the realization and guilt hit him and you see it in his eyes and face, and he’ll apologize in a low voice and take it out on himself when the self-blame hits. 

—JINX jinx is never gonna admit that she’s wrong, so it’s just straight up gaslighting and lack of communication when you two argue. it would take her a while to finally open up to you because she destroys everything she sees, and one of you eventually apologizes. most of the time, it’s you apologizing for misunderstanding her, or her apologizing when she directly (or indirectly) hurts you. jinx cares and does not ever want to hurt you, but her actions and intrusive thoughts stop her from mending the damages she causes.

2. It’s NOT “resolved” in a few scenes. It’s not even fully resolved by the end of the show! That’s why Caitlyn looks sad and asks Vi if she’s still in this fight. There’s so much work to do to fix things and she’s asking if Vi is going to stick with her while she does it.

3. She is head of House Kiramman. Sallow only complains initially because he doesn’t know who she is. Once she informs them she takes control of the whole scene. She has access to all of her mother’s records. She’s seen giving testimony and advice to the council on several occasions.

You can try to deny it all you want, but it’s confirmed by the shows creators that that seat on the counsel belongs to her once her mother died. I don’t know what to tell you, you’re just wrong here.

4. Yeah, SOME of the main characters get happy-ish endings. I don’t know if I’d say Ekko got a happy ending. Or Jayce. Or Viktor. Or Mel. And just because SOME characters got out of the cycle doesn’t mean that things between Piltover and Zaun are going to improve. There’s a reason they showed Sevika looking like she’s out numbered by the other counselors. Progress is slow, but it’s not inevitable that it’s going to happen. Trump winning a second term and the last 40 years of progress being rapidly undone should be proof of that. Zaun and Piltover are still at odds with each other. Tensions are down, but they WILL rise again. THAT is the tragedy of the two cities. It’s League of Legends lore that they never truly come back together.

If you were fine with bad guys not being punished then you wouldn’t be whining about Caitlyn so hard.

Also Caitlyn lost an eye. Last time I checked physical disfigurement was something that always remains a reminder of what you did for the rest of your life, like your beloved Zuko.

I do not understand why I have to keep explaining that it WASNT instantaneously. If you were paying attention Caitlyn was working through stuff the entire season. I don’t think you guys actually watched the show.

How Arcan season two should have happened.

1. It should not have ended the show.

2. Caitlyn becoming evil should have stuck until close to the end of the season.

3. Warwick should have probably happened later, instead the plot should have been about Caitlyn.

4. Jinx should not have completed her redemption arc by the end of the season. At best she can be an anti-hero and her relationship with Vi can start to change.

5. Since we’re going for Caitlyn as redeemable, she should have more of a desire to do what she sees as right, creating programs to provide food and the like to people who need it, or other stuff like that. Because currently it comes off like she would not believably start to like Vi again based on how her arc progresses, then she just does.

6. The finale should be a fight with Caitlyn where she realizes the weight of this problem.

Jayce didn't quite know how he'd done it, but somewhere in the space in the council room where he'd stood and delivered the words and made an impassioned plea for mercy and understanding, he'd done it. There had been some questions about retribution and he'd- admittedly, kind of blacked out for a second.

When he'd asked Mel, afterwards, exactly what he'd said--- well, first, she'd laughed at him, because she'd asked him to explain and he had. But once she was done laughing at him, she said that he had given a very compelling speech about starting relations with a new city-state on the grounds of mutual respect, of understanding that a civil war had been raging for a long time now, a quiet one, and in a war both sides have acted in ways that were not proportional or right. He'd also said- and Mel had noted this with a certain glint of amusement- that every person in this war had acted to protect their families from the enforcers. That every person they could make an example of was someone's father, someone's daughter, had a family. It wouldn't just punish them. It would salt the ground they were trying to grow a better future in. Mel'd patted him on the shoulder, told him he'd done good, and left it at that.

He suspected he'd said more than he meant to, especially given that Viktor'd seemed similarly amused, but Viktor had been eager to get back to the lab and Jayce had been eager to let him, with promises he'd follow as soon as he could (and Mel had agreed to check on him, Jayce needed Viktor okay, too.)

So he had it all in hand. He just needed to go pay someone a visit.

The city's like an extension of his hands, the way it responds when he moves.

Jayce inclines his head and follows when Silco gestures him in, not bothering to spare the bouncer a second glance.

He follows Silco up to his office, which is empty, and scans the room. There's... a little bit of dried blood on the floor. A glow catches his eye and he looks up. There are... neon paintings all over the ceiling, glowing phosphorescent.

Something-- oddly comforting settles in Jayce's chest. It shouldn't be, he realizes, distantly. But there's something about the scrawled writing on the ceiling of such a formal office that affirms that-- well. At the very least, Silco wasn't lying about how much she meant to him. The little marks of her presence are everywhere. It's not a portrait on the wall the way some of his coworkers would have, but, well. It's Zaun.

He was starting to really appreciate what that means.

Silco sits and just makes a diplomatic gesture at the other chair, and Jayce slides him the papers.

"We're going to have to build you a hexgate." He says, without fanfare. "Rather than giving you full access to Piltover's. Is that an equitable compromise?" Silco raises an eyebrow. "You'd hand over your technology that easily?" He asks, and Jayce snorts. "If you disassemble it, we're going to have problems. I trust that you're aware that what you might gain isn't worth that cost." "An awful lot of trust, Councillor." Silco muses, and it's almost a question. Jayce swallows, hard. "---you trusted me." He says. "Or at the very least, trusted me to- act within what you think of me. I know you're assuming i'm soft. That i'm balking at the first sign of danger. I'm not too prideful to admit I don't have the stomach for a war. I don't want one. I'm a scientist, not a soldier, and certainly not a general." He looks up at Silco, chin up. "I don't trust you either." he says. "Not on any personal level. But you showed your hand. You may be a monster, but you're a man, too. And I can work with that. You don't want a war. You're willing to do what it takes to stop anyone else from starting one." Silco is giving him a look he doesn't quite know how to define, but it makes his pulse do something fast and strange, like a bird trapped in a cage, beating its wings.

"You're uncommonly observant." Silco says, finally. Jayce's lips twitch. "Scientist." he says.

"Must not be easy, being their poster boy." "---It isn't." Jayce admits.

"You're not cut out for this."

"I'm not."

"And yet." Silco muses. "You manage it anyway. I'm finding myself impressed."

"---thank you." Jayce says. He's trying not to look flustered, and he pushes himself up from the chair, offering a hand. "Do you accept the terms?"

Silco stands too.

It happens very fast.

Silco's face is suddenly very close to his, and his heart just about stops, because Silco is holding his chin. His expression is still flat but his eyes are blazing.

"Don't misunderstand." he says. "I'm impressed with this little charade. But if you think for one moment that I trust you enough to let my guard down-" "No." Jayce says, firmly, cutting him off. "I dont--- expect you to. I expect you to distrust and hate me. I expect you to act as a citizen of Zaun. But don't misunderstand me either, Silco, I'm not unaware of the politics. I may not be suited for it, but that doesn't mean I don't know what I'm doing. Despite that-" He pulls back, out of Silco's grip. "-I can't make deals with Zaun." he says. "So I am expecting you to act as a representative of Zaun's interests. And the second you don't, it won't matter that you're a man with a daughter, because there are more people than you who've staked their lives on this. Hold up your end. I'll hold up mine. Now do we have a deal or not?"

Silco is still giving him that look, and before Jayce can question him, his thumb presses against Jayce's lip.

"There's a traditional way to seal a bargain." He says, and before Jayce can question him, he--

It takes a second to process that SIlco is kissing him, and that he's kissing Silco back, on instinct, because his face was close and he was half prepared for it, half thinking about it, even though he was in no way prepared for it, definitely not thinking about it--

Silco pulls back, looking undefinably smug.

"We have a deal."
