Folyt. Köv.! #budapest #housingestate #lakótelep #budapestarchitecture #socialistrealism #szocreal #explorebudapest #relief #felafejjel #budapestarchitecture #buildingsofbudapest #thefifties https://www.instagram.com/p/CEPNHuwBkSJ/?igshid=59pmd7cogg9t

I love old council/housing estates for their photographic potential. Suburban Photography  Perils No. 1 - ‘Everyone thinks you’re a complete weirdo... or worse.’
I’ve just returned from a new shoot and I felt it might be interesting to share some of the pitfalls of being a ‘suburban photographer’.
Thanks to the proliferation of smartphones, all the world (including me) is suddenly able to be a ‘photographer’. It’s now completely normal to wander around city centres and snap away, capturing landmarks or sunsets or sarcastic signs outside of coffee shops/ pubs, such as the below...
Tumblr media
But, as of December 2017, it is completely not normal to wander around SUBURBS and take photos of beautiful or interesting homes or streets.
Now, I totally get this of course. As a ‘suburbanite’ myself, the idea of someone wandering down my avenue and taking photos makes even me feel uncomfortable! Home is a very private place - it’s a refuge from the world and many of us want to protect that shelter.
So far, no one has approached me or challenged me. Part of that is because I’m very selective about the homes and street scenes I capture - you’ll notice that I try to keep people and cars out of shot. I also never specifically mention street names or house numbers so as to keep everything as vague as possible.
This can be very restrictive. I often walk past shots that perfectly ‘capture the suburbs’ because it would be invasive or disrespectful. This is part of the challenge I suppose!
I really don’t want to make anyone feel uncomfortable. If I capture your home, I’m not doing it because:
(i) I’m stalking you
(ii) I’m planning to break in
I’m doing it because it looks interesting or beautiful or both. I capture scenes that best represent the breadth of suburban life. As this project evolves, I’m going to look to start documenting homes and scenes with the encouragement of the homeowner or occupant. My dream is to receive commissions from people who are proud of what they have created and wish to share it with others.
But for now... I’m still going to have to be that strange guy wandering around suburbs.
In all seriousness - if you find your home or street on the blog or Instagram and would like it removed, just DM me.
