Hello Reader, 

 As you walk across your neighborhoods and cities, have you come across buildings, stores, or just random details in the building we come across and are confused and bewildered by what you see? 

Given the proliferation and accessibility of new technology you would expect that we would have the most amazing beautiful buildings possible? Most of us walk unaware of the spaces we are in and why they are the way that they are.

I have been fascinated by buildings and by extension architecture since I was 8 years old. From the home in the Caribbean to be engineering marvels in the big city. By the time I went to college to study I had joked to my first professor, now Dean, that I became an architect “out of spite” for the constant bad new architecture I was always used to seeing around my neighborhood and haunts. 

After graduating and working presently in a firm. I have become far more aware of the machinations that make getting any building leap from paper to iron and stone. Now having the luxury to drive as opposed to being in a subway tunnel I really get to see what is happening with my surroundings. Even at the present the Manhattan Skyline keeps growing similar to a jungle of towers and lights. Larger and less recognizable than before. 

The fact that the tallest present building in the City is something I could literally cook up in Minecraft in less than an hour is disappointing. Money doesn't buy taste. Have a literal tower of babel but despite the view it is about as pleasant as Tour Montparnarsse in Paris. The only better view than the Eiffel but a jarring building. 

The average house in 2020 is about $320,000.00 USD. The average age of a house is 36 years. Most houses particularly in the East Coast are much older than that. Homes tend to be restored or added upon more than they are demolished and rebuilt.  

So instead of being “spiteful” and merely complaining about bad architecture. A more education and productive take is to “design” a solution for the problems. Some functional, others mainly aesthetic. 

I do not have all the answers to my questions. I seek to solve them through design. I do think that they are all going to be but perhaps solve mistakes that were most likely the result of crunched deadlines, weird aesthetics and plain old Cheapness. It is easier to learn by doing.

Just a rant because I’m tired.

Hey! First and foremost, I would like to apologize for the lack of writing! I’ve been feeling unmotivated, but I have a few things in the works. To be completely transparent, my dog has been sick the past few months. She’s young though, and it’s not life threatening, but she is on steroids, which causes her to eat and drink more, thus needing to use the bathroom more often. Unfortunately, when we were giving her the medicine during the day was causing her to wake up during the night, which meant my older sister had to let her out a few times between midnight and 3 am. We started giving her the meds earlier in the day, which in turn makes her wake up earlier, I’m talking 4-5 am. I try and not put her to bed (her and her sister sleep in separate cages because we have cats that roam the house0 until 11pm - midnight, just so I can try and get more sleep, but it hasn’t been working. I’m not necessarily complaining about getting up, because I would rather lose sleep than my older sister, but when I try and sleep during the day and am woken up less than an hour later, one can get a little cranky. That and my mom wants me to take driving classes and get a job asap because I’m not in college, it’s all just... Blah right now. I don’t have a phone, so I can’t write when I’m out and about, and my own chrome book has been broken for a few months as well. The only other things I can write on are my kindle fire, which is a pain by itself, and my family’s windows computer that is 6-9 years old? We need a new one. And with watching my dogs, I need to move the computer from our planning desk in our eating area to our family room, which isn’t too far, but this computer is like 20 lbs and isn’t fun moving. Okay, I’m done, Ima just go write some tings, so keep an eye out, and if anyone has some tips for falling asleep, lmk... Please...

research for noise pollution essay

When given the brief we had a choice of three topics to write about, the one that immediately took my eye was noise. I have long since worked creatively within the realms of noise performing in noise bands as well as working solo with topics such as radio noise, using loops as a chance tool to create improvised pieces, and so naturally i had a lot to say about the subject however this brief helped me to deepen my research in a way which has undoubtably effected my work since. 

When beginning my research i started to think about the sounds of my environment, living in noise riddled industrial fish island hackney wick which lead me to watch many interviews with R. Murray Schafer, in which he discusses noise pollution and the issues this brings forth Murray Schafer (Corfu, 2011) this kick started my thinking on how we could resolve these issues and i was very inspired to read and listen to someone working so prolifically in the field. Finding this quote from Luigi Russolo 1913 “Today noise reigns supreme over human sensibility” this showed to me that noise pollution was issue dating back over a hundred years giving depth to the idea that something had to change soon.  

“noise pollution is now a world problem it would seem that the world soundscape has reached an apex of vulgarity in our time and many experts have predicted universal deafness as the ultimate consequence”(Schafer, 1993)(pg1) 

i began to think what is the polar opposite to noise and found this quote 

“noise or unpleasant sound only exits in its relation to pleasant or desirable sound”(Hegarty, 2007)

are the answers within pleasant or desirable sound?

“i suddenly thought of this idea of making music that didn’t impose itself on your space in the same way but created a landscape that you could belong to, be part of.” (Youtube 2017 Brian Eno)  the original conception of ambient music  

So If ambient music is a sequence or arrangement of sounds that do not impose themselves on the individual in the same way that noise does could we begin to develop the idea of using ambient sound within our society to create a more pleasant world soundscape.

“Today all sounds belong to a continuous field of possibilities lying within the comprehensive dominion of music. Behold the new orchestra: the sonic universe! And the musicians: anyone and anything that sounds!” (Schafer, 1993) 

It is true that we are the orchestra to our own world soundscape with man made sounds reigning higher in the sonic field of society over natural sound, which means that the answers lay within the education of the people and a deeper understanding of noise and the effects it has on our listening and environment.

what if we were part of a acoustic environment we could feel a connection with ,as a pose to the current seemly displacing noisy one we suffer, and what sort of effect would this have on society. Using Enos ambient ideas as our model we could possibly create our machines with noise pollution at the forefront of our designs.
