the idea that Alicent sent Daeron away just before Rhaenyra had Joffrey makes the extent of Alicent's cruelty towards Rhaenyra in episode six make more sense. Asking for the baby to be immediately ripped from his mothers arms the minute he was born to check if he was another bastard was just unnecessarily cruel, particularly because Alicent could have sent someone to examine the child or gone down herself, it seemed cruel even considering the resentment and hatred that had obviously built up between them. However if Alicent had just had her baby, her youngest most innocent son, taken away ultimately because of the Targaryens, because even if she fully made the choice it would have likely been made out of fear, paranoia and the fact that she was struggling and raising those kids alone while Rhaenyra had a whole support system which included Viserys who loved his bastard grandsons more than his trueborn sons. Maybe the loss of Daeron added a new layer of anger and she cruelly wanted to inflict that pain of having your child taken from you onto Rhaenyra, just briefly, so she ordered for Joffrey to be brought to her the minute he was born.
#I know they have the lazy excuse of the time jump to explain alicent becoming cruel over time but that seemed a lot even for her#the way she acted in 1x06 overall definitely makes more sense with the added context of her recently having to send her young son away#alicent hightower#house of the dragon#I saw a good take recently that said episode 6 and 7 happened in the wrong order and that driftmarks events should have happened first#then after driftmark alicent becomes more cruel and hateful towards Rhaenyra which would make sense#not that I don't think alicent being cruel after 10 years of resentment is ooc but the level of cruelty should have amped up after driftmar

House of the Dragon 2nd rewatch - 1x06 The Princess and The Queen
The birthing scene is so messy and visceral and the camera barely leaves Rhaenyra's face, it's very well done 10/10
Obsessed with Rhaenyra and Laenor using just #her and #she to talk about Alicent. She who shouldn't-be-named lest they invoke the evil she represents? She, who is so ever present in their conversations that a name is not necessary. She, the one whose name hurts.
Alicent and Rhaenyra's are like cats in a hissing contest in this episode. Their passive aggression is so compelling, I love this soap opera.
Alicent: Rhaenyra’s children don’t look like Laenor AT ALL. Viserys: listen but horse genetics say that it can happen.
I will never get over the look on Alicent’s face when Criston called Rhaenyra a spoiled cunt. I know she was calling him a slur in her mind.
This episode is so hard to watch Alicent keeps distracting me with how pretty she is and how great her hair looks.
The scene when Alicent yells at Aegon to drill her point home and then gets self-conscious that she kinda lost control a bit but obviously she can’t apologize cause that would undermine her point and also why would she? She’s in the right. I love her she’s so maladjusted.
I bet Daemon wishes his name had been Aegon.
That scene where Daemon is flying on Caraxes and Laena is on Vhagar and he open is arms in the air like “look im driving with no hands” is sooooo corny. lmao he thinks he’s so cool. No, you are silly and corny.
I wonder at what point Aegon stopped showing to sword lessons.
The council scene in 1x06 is genius for so many reasons (like Alicent canonically using Rhaenyra's lactation as an excuse to look at her boobs Four times (I counted)), but I’m obsessed with Rhaenyra being quiet and even bored until Alicent speaks and then Rhaenyra immediately contradicts her just for the sake of it.
Alicent and Larys' relationship is hard to analyze for me cause it evokes a lot of awful feelings. But this scene where she is so comfortable around his presence shows us they were actually friends at some point, Alicent really needed someone that was on her team (besides Criston) and it makes what happens in 1x09 even more real and sinister and awful.
After Laena's death, Daemon is just as unable to give emotional support to his daughters as Viserys with Rhaenyra.
#hotd#house of the dragon#hotd rewatch#alicent hightower#rhaenyra targaryen#the princess and the queen#laenor velaryon#daemon targaryen#viserys targaryen#this episode is very high in my ranking#love them being petty

Fic Author Self Rec
Thank you so much @alexagirlie for the tag!!
When you get this, reply with your favourite 5 fics you've written, then pass it on to at least 5 other writers.
I'm not sure if I even have five fandom fics posted 😂 So we'll see how this goes! In no particular order..
1 All of our Book's Pages Dog Eared (Equestrian!Jace x Farrier!Cregan, House of the Dragon)
Inspired by a friend's incredible fic that got me into Jacegan as a ship, a british take on hotd horsefic. My longest multi-chapter for a fandom, I'm so proud of it. Farrier!Cregan takes a temp job at the Red Keep working for world famous dressage rider Rhaenyra Targaryen. Gets more than he bargained for in the form of her eldest son...
2 Shield that Guards the Realms of Men (Gen - for now. Harwin Lives, House of the Dragon)
This was wholly inspired by the hotd season 2 trailer seeing jace and cregan at the wall, and ended up making me expand a little personal drabble about Harwin being sent to the wall rather than dying at Harrenhal. When Jace visits the wall with Lord Cregan Stark to gain favour for his mother's war, there's a familiar face waiting for him in the Lord Commander. (Planning a Chapter 2 with some Jacegan but i've not managed to get around to it yet)
3 The Princess, The Queen and the Prince Consort (Canon Divergent!Harwin x Rhaenyra, House of the Dragon, Episode rewrite)
A rewrite of that scene in 1x06, where Harwin gets to punch Crispy. Rewritten based off of a roleplay over on @scripturient-roleplay. What if Harwin and Rhaenyra had been able to marry, and he survived into the dance?
4 To The Sea We Shall Return (Canon Divergent!Harwin x Rhaenyra, House of the Dragon, Episode rewrite)
Another episode rewrite, this time 1x07, the funeral on driftmark and Aemond losing an eye. We see things go down from Harwin's POV. I had a lot of fun with this one! Again, based off of a roleplay over on @scripturient-roleplay. Rhaewin living their best lives.
I don't have anything else published, but honourable mention to the Rhaewin F1!AU that I posted here just for fun that's since become over 100 pages of google docs rambling.
As for people to tag... Idk if I know 5 writers here 😂
@cordeliacordate @archaiccotton @heliophytes @rentekren
Apologies if I've double tagged anyone! I could only think of four but I only tagged four fics 😂 ofc participation is totally optional, and if you see this and wanna do it but I've not tagged you, go for it! Just tag me, I wanna see everyone's stuff!

Aemond and Vhagar
It occurred to me that Aemond's claiming of Vhagar was reminiscent of lizard mating; the reins letting him hold her neck, and her trying to shake him off as a test, and so on. Further, I couldn't help but be reminded of the myth of Psyche and Cupid, as he too sneaks up on her while she's sleeping; this naturally led me to think of bride kidnapping, and bride prices, etc.
The Driftmark episode includes both Rhaenyra and Daemon's wedding and the reveal of Aegon and Helaena's betrothal, which reflects on Aemond and Vhagar's bonding; the scene is also immediately preceded by Rhaenyra and Daemon's sex scene.
One aspect of this interpretation of the scene that I find interesting is that Aemond is "the aggressor" while also being a vulnerable child; he claims Vhagar and she submits to him, but his actual control of her is an illusion, it is happening entirely on her terms. That is why I included two depictions of Ganymede and the Eagle; one where he is in peril and one where he looks quite pleased.
[House of the Dragon, 1x06, 1x07 // Wikipedia articles: x x x // L'Amour et Psyché by Michel Philibert Genod // Cupid and Psyche by Anthony van Dyck // George R.R. Martin, A Storm of Swords // Lizard mating habits: x x x // The Abduction of Ganymede by Peter Paul Rubens // Norman Pirates in the 9th Century by Évariste Vital Luminais // Ganymede and the Eagle, unknown artist]

Here are some thoughts I had while watching House of the Dragon 1x06 that I shared on Twitter:
I’m still catching up on HOTD (I know!), but I *need* to express my, albeit predictable, love for Harwin Strong.
I’d watch a million episodes of Rhaenyra/Harwin and Laenor/Qarl and Daemon/Laena. Those relationships are already too short-lived for me, and I’m only on Episode 6.
I want SO MUCH MORE of Daemon and Laena and their girls. The bit of Daemon teaching Baela High Valyrian? I’m so invested in these relationships, and I know they’re going to be gone in the blink of an eye.

Hi, I’m disgusted with how the show has demonised TG and feel sorry for Aegon, Aemond, Helaena and Daeron. Book Alicent would never do that to her children.
Hey you!
I think for me, I am definitely frustrated though with the route the show took and then weirdly doubled down on even though Condal had been saying how the GA would have sympathy for TG.
Are they demonized? That feels like a strong word but I see where you're coming from. They have definitely been punished in the weirdest of ways. What TG had going for them was their loyalty to one another, their ride or die. But now they're a house further divided and it's just weird to me.
When you look at S1 and S2 as a whole, you can see the throughline: Rhaenyra believes she's ordained by the gods, and combined with the prophecy shared with her by Viserys, she's shifted from the 'The throne is mine because my father named me his heir' to 'The Gods have decreed I must sit the throne and unite the realm and here are the symbols of that'. Is it fascinating? Yes.
It would be more intriguing to pit Rhaenyra's descent into prophecy (shades of Rhaegar plunging the realm into civil war anyone?) with the counter of the TG side coming at it from 'We live in a feudal society, the throne is Aegon's as his right as first born son' and not... what are they doing with TG anyway? The point of the stories GRRM is writing is that gunning for the Iron Throne is bad. Subjugation and Feudalism and using the people of the realm as canon fodder for war is BAD. That is the tragedy of it. Instead, the narrative has set up that Oh My Gods it's So Insane and Unheard Of! That in a feudal society, it's.... silly? Evil? Ridiculous? For one to assume that the first born son would not become the heir and How Dare You Support That.
And so by giving Rhaenyra these symbols of Divine Right of Prophecy vs Aegon having his symbols of legitimacy that are recognized by the realm at large, you're in this weird place where TG is having to kowtow and get punished for getting in the way of Prophecy.
Here's the Thing:
I'm so okay with Rhaenicent. I loved the change the show did to make them friends and throw this wrench into that relationship and shows how vying for the throne will tear friends and families apart, right? The Alicent of episodes 1x06/1x07 would fucking never. Where is that woman? Yes, she is horrified by how she acted, but oh no, she cut Rhaenyra's arm after Aemond's maiming and the public disavowment of Alicent and her children by their father, the king and... now she's sitting on her hands not plotting payback?
Rhaenyra and Alicent have been enemies far long than they were friends, and it's okay for that to all be really complicated because of the closeness of formative years and Situationship but Alicent choosing to give up her son like that?
She would never. I get that she's scared, I get that she sees what Aemond sees: Rhaenyra with three more dragons ready to clearly burn them all alive (since they came and butchered her grandson) But when Olivia Cooke is saying she's having to work backwards from the decision to see how Alicent gets there it's like... no. You're sacrificing all three of your sons, the three sons you have spent your entire life protecting, to get your daughter and granddaughter out.
And it's some of those things where it's like 'what else is she supposed to do? Condemn them all to death??' which no, she shouldn't. But she's like 'I'm throwing the gates open for you and you can let us leave but you know, you can totally kill Aemond while you're at it, he's become something else' and Rhaenyra was totally right to call out that fantasy! Because Alicent Hightower Would Never.
It's this weird hopeful naivete Alicent Hightower shouldn't have. Like, Alicent has known for twenty years her sons' lives have been hanging in the balance. Because that's how contested succession works: The boys would always be used against Rhaenyra the moment someone with enough clout gets pissed at her. The idea that this wasn't ever going to happen underscores how bad of a ruler Viserys was (please don't get me started on this season deifying him in the weirdest way).
I dunno. The point is, if this was the route they wanted to go, you're expecting us to believe that Alicent Hightower is just as mid-milquetoast as her late husband and she just isn't. This is a mama bear fighting for her children and spitting on the trappings of the Targaryen dynasty (which Jaehaerys weakened by inviting the realm to have a say in the succession in the first place) and Rhaenyra fighting (rightfully) for her stolen throne.
Because BOTH Rhaenyra and Aegon got screwed over. BOTH Rhaenyra and Aegon were let down by their conflict-averse father. Both of them were left unprotected by the king, but while Rhaenyra made her own protections (such as marrying Daemon), Aegon had his mother.
I don't even know if any of this makes sense. I'm annoyed. I'm not disgusted, I'm just frustrated. But it is what it is. There's a lot of things that have gone in there. Where this season shone bright, it shone bright, and where it failed, it failed hard. But it was already built on a rocky foundation to begin with.
Remember to support your fic writers!
#hotd tag#I don't even know if I answered your question#and I just woke up and had a lot of feelings#anyway I've got maiden chapters and a big bang to write

okay so i'm actually really getting into the house of the dragon now and i'm on episode 1x06 and as of now it seems very clear that rhaenyra is akin to a democrat and alicent a republican. (and by that i mean in terms of how the parties have traditionally viewed the role of the government and its policy, not what the current political landscape has made them into.)
no spoilers please, but is this considered accurate?

Jess Watches // Tues 5 Mar // Day 162 Synopses & Favourite Scenes & Poll
Severance (rw with mum) 1x06 Hide and Seek
The team angers Cobel by forming an alliance.
Was that ashes in Cobel's pendant? Is the man in her shrine (and pendant) an Eagan?
Did the politicians wife consent to the severance procedure? She looked trapped and Devon sensed it too.
I don't fully trust Burt. I want to, but it wouldn't surprise me if he wasn't actually severed. Wild guess - he's Helly's Uncle.
Dylan realizing he had a kid he didn't know existed was heartwrenching. Was he severed before or after his partner got pregnant?
A Town Without Seasons (with mum) 1x01 The Train that Goes to Town
Hansuke and his cat go to the temporary housing settlement, where he finds Roku-chan, a man who drives an imaginary train.
Surprisingly wholesome. I thought Roku was goiing to be teased and ridiculed but everyone looked out for him and even bullied the police into letting him go as he was obviously innocent.
Merlin 2x03 The Nightmare Begins
Morgana realizes she has magic powers when she sets her room on fire from her bed. Against the advice of Gaius and the dragon, Merlin sends her to seek advice from the Druids.
Gaius wyd?? How can you treat Merlin and Morgana so differently when it comes to magic? They both deserve honesty, kindness and understanding. It's no wonder she turns evil. She deserves to, as a treat.

as i promised, i'm in your inbox asking about your easter eggs/inside jokes/references from your writing that you want to share! i love to share my own, and love to hear about other writers'.
and, in somewhat the same vein, what are some things you've included in your writing that are a private joke to yourself?
What is it with people turning my asks back on me lately 😉J/K I love it! I slip so many little bits like that in that I lose track myself, but here are some highlights:
For inside jokes, In “Charming” James sings Puff the Magic Dragon to get Anna back to sleep; this is the same song that I would sing to my kids when they were wee to do the same - and is the only song I can sing and not sound like a strangled cat. Also, in “She”, aside from the author insert with the British soldier (Gerry’s right that people from Pompey get a wee bit insulted if people think we come from ScumSouthampton), Mary and Gerry also share the same anniversary date as my wife and I (give or take 29 years).
From a wider perspective, “She” actually has a lot of little bits it - Inspector O'Hare mentioned in the news report is named after the inspector from Hope Street, a Northern Irish police procedural drama; Angela Rippon was one of the original presenters of Top Gear, which actually did air on the date the fic is set - and conveniently allowed me to do the Rippon/Ripping joke; Erin, ever the romantic but always unlucky, has her birthday the day before Valentine's day - missed it by this much… etc.
My favourite two jokes are when Shea and Sarah leave the pub to the strains of Anita Ward’s latest single, what was “Ring My Bell - which is just what they were off to do, if you know what I mean… (*waggles eyebrows*) Also, there’s a Doctor Who reference when Orla tastes the blood - “Blood. Human blood. A positive… with just a dash of iron.”
I also quite like referencing the wider canon too - In “To Travel” James has a wee garden, as it's established in Erin's Diary that he's a talented gardener, and I thought he'd probably like to have a proper go at one when he had his own house. James saying “Right, OK, etc” when having a cack attack is a reference to him trying to use the computer in episode 1x06.
Oh, and referring to Erin’s “swishy” skirt in various places (especially "A Confederacy of Fathers). I snuck that in to tip the hat to another fanfic author, but I can’t for the life of me think who…
