If you think about it the Green Council is just about Alicent vs. Otto in all possible ways. The first time Alicent rebels against him and it was all just to guarantee Rhaenyra would survive the (inevitable) usurpation.

I find it interesting that Larys is always killing by fire, giving the orders but not committing the act himself. First his brother and father…then Mysaria’s house. Ultimately helping Aegon escape and sending him to Dragonstone, which will lead to Aegon killing Rhaenyra by fire.

Why is Ser Erryk manhandling Rhaenys like that show SOME RESPECT.

Daemon laughing at his wife’s funeral…..not a serious bone in him. I mean sure he was laughing at Vaemond using his speech at Laena’s funeral to make a jab at Rhaenyra and her children but STILL. god

Love how much of this episode is about gazes. A lot of things unsaid, but still there, present.

A lot of the discourse about Dritfmark Alicent centers around her reaction during the knife scene only. But what about her remorse after? What about her conversation with Otto where he's PROUD of her cause she showed her claws, proud that she had that side of her. What about how she latched into religion even more after this, pursuing a path to righting her wrongs? Anyways Alicent is not Driftmark Alicent, she never was, she never will. Anyone who thinks so is forgetting her words "I am at last myself."

Btw when Rhaenyra says to Daemon "Fire is a prison. The sea offers an escape." and the scene cuts to Alicent in a boat????? heheh i see what you did there

The birthing scene is so messy and visceral and the camera barely leaves Rhaenyra's face, it's very well done 10/10

Obsessed with Rhaenyra and Laenor using just #her and #she to talk about Alicent. She who shouldn't-be-named lest they invoke the evil she represents? She, who is so ever present in their conversations that a name is not necessary. She, the one whose name hurts.

Alicent and Rhaenyra's are like cats in a hissing contest in this episode. Their passive aggression is so compelling, I love this soap opera.

Alicent: Rhaenyra’s children don’t look like Laenor AT ALL. Viserys: listen but horse genetics say that it can happen.

I will never get over the look on Alicent’s face when Criston called Rhaenyra a spoiled cunt. I know she was calling him a slur in her mind.

This episode is so hard to watch Alicent keeps distracting me with how pretty she is and how great her hair looks.

The scene when Alicent yells at Aegon to drill her point home and then gets self-conscious that she kinda lost control a bit but obviously she can’t apologize cause that would undermine her point and also why would she? She’s in the right. I love her she’s so maladjusted.

I bet Daemon wishes his name had been Aegon.

That scene where Daemon is flying on Caraxes and Laena is on Vhagar and he open is arms in the air like “look im driving with no hands” is sooooo corny. lmao he thinks he’s so cool. No, you are silly and corny.

I wonder at what point Aegon stopped showing to sword lessons.

The council scene in 1x06 is genius for so many reasons (like Alicent canonically using Rhaenyra's lactation as an excuse to look at her boobs Four times (I counted)), but I’m obsessed with Rhaenyra being quiet and even bored until Alicent speaks and then Rhaenyra immediately contradicts her just for the sake of it.

Alicent and Larys' relationship is hard to analyze for me cause it evokes a lot of awful feelings. But this scene where she is so comfortable around his presence shows us they were actually friends at some point, Alicent really needed someone that was on her team (besides Criston) and it makes what happens in 1x09 even more real and sinister and awful.

After Laena's death, Daemon is just as unable to give emotional support to his daughters as Viserys with Rhaenyra.

in episode 1x06 we see how alicent interacts with each of her children, considering that she shows her affection with touch.

she touches helaena's arm, which openly displeases helaena.

in the same scene she hugs aemond, and he sinks into it. (i like that both moments happen in the same scene, with the two children she's affectionate with)

then we have aegon, the child she does not give affection to, but rather grabs his face harshly.

she then realizes she lost control a bit and was too harsh, even if it was to protect him and make him understand what's at stake, and she brushes his hair, trying to soothe the hurt she already inflicted.

it does not work.

House of the Dragon 2nd rewatch - 1x05 We Light the Way

When Otto is leaving the Red Keep after he got fired and Alicent goes to say goodbye, it's such a key scene for Alicent. Everything about it works perfectly, the fact that it's raining, how she calls out Otto on his ambition to put Aegon on the throne, and how he drills the idea that Rhaenyra will kill her children when the time comes into her mind. It could be argued that Otto did try to solve the issue by a betrothal between Rhaenyra and Aegon, which Viserys obviously laughed at because of their age difference. But in his mind, the fact that the realm rejected Rhaenys in the Great Council of 101 AC makes it very clear that it will reject Rhaenyra when the time comes. Failing to make Viserys see this, he turns to the next person with the power to do something about it, Alicent. Was Otto right? Kinda, yes. But how he handled the whole thing, overestimating his ability to control Viserys, underestimating Viserys' love for Rhaenyra and guilt over Aemma's death... It all came together to make him look like a villain....i even fell for that but i don't know, it's more complicated than that. And that's on good writing i guess.

Wanted to add this visual because it just works so well. The way he’s bending down so they are at the same eye level, the (Targaryen) flame separating them, moving in Alicent’s direction. Emily’s portrayal of Alicent trying to be an adult but actually feeling like a forsaken child :(

Otto literally only hugging and being physically affectionate to Alicent when he wants to make sure she listens to him...........what effect will this have in Alicent? take a wild guess

Love that this episode is so Alicent-centered because it shows us all the moments that lead to her big green dress moment. Like Larys talking to her in the Weirwood tree.

Joffrey could easily be Lestat's brother.

I find it so refreshing that Rhaenyra hates Jason Lannister so fiercely.

That last scene where Rhaenyra and Laenor's wedding and Alicent saving Criston overlap is so interesting cause it makes it look like Alicent and Criston are kinda marrying too....in a way Alicent saving Criston it's making him commit to her the rest of his life, an unbreakable bond. A sullied knight saved by a maiden that's not really a maiden. They both cling to the ideas of the other and help each other perpetuate them. Beautiful writing.
