OTTERSHAW PARK
The mansion
Hi guys!!
I'm sharing Ottershaw Park. This is the 18th building for my English Collection.
I decorated most of the house ground floor, for reference.
The interiors:
History of the house:Â In 1784 Thomas Sewell died and ownership of Ottershaw Park passed to his son, Thomas Bailey Heath Sewell, Lieutenant Colonel in the Surrey Fencible Cavalry. He sold it in 1796 to Edmund Boehm who improved the interior of the house and enlarged the estate by buying tracts of wasteland and allotments.
In about 1805 Boehm built, to the design of the eminent architect James Wyatt, two Grecian-style lodges at the new entrance to the estate from where a coach road ran to the mansion. The same architect may also have designed for Boehm the Gothic Chapel which originally served as a kitchen, bake house, dairy and pantry but was demolished in 1962.
Ottershaw Park was bought in 1819 by Major General Sir George Wood, a Lieutenant General in the Bengal Army. At this time the estate was largely self-supporting with stables, smithy, brew house, bake house, laundry, dairy, slaughter houses, ice house and two farms.
Sir George died in 1824 and the estate passed to his son, also named George, who in 1841 sold the property to Richard Crawshay who built a new bailiffâs house, farm buildings and brew house.
On Crawshayâs death in 1859 the estate was bought by Sir Thomas Edward Colebrooke MP, who made a number of alterations to the mansion. He also gave the money and land for the building of Christchurch and the first village school.
The estate was later sold to Lawrence James Baker, a stockbroker and MP who sold it in 1910 to the millionaire, Friedrich Gustav Jonathan Eckstein. Eckstein demolished the old mansion and replaced it with the present building designed by Niven & Wigglesworth which is more magnificent and much larger.
During World War I Eckstein made the building available to the British Red Cross as an Auxiliary Home Hospital but soon after the war sold it to Miss Susan Dora Cecilia Schintz, the daughter of a Swiss nitrates millionaire. Miss Schintz lost most of her sizeable inheritance through gifts to charity and bad investments and finally had to sell the estate. Much of it was acquired by the Ottershaw Park Investment Company (OPIC) which planned to develop the rim of the estate for housing. In 1932 the mansion and central part of the park became Ottershaw College, a boarding school for boys which for a short time was very successful, but eventually became insolvent and finally closed at the outbreak of World War II.
During the war The Vacuum Oil Company leased the mansion as offices and laboratories. From 1940 much of the surrounding land was either ploughed for crops or grazed as part of the war effort and the woodland areas were used by the 19 Vehicle Reserve Depot (VRD) for storing vehicles.
The Vacuum Oil Company moved back to London at the end of 1947 and Surrey County Council established Ottershaw School which was opened in 1948. The school prospered until 1980 when it closed due to financial constraints.
In 1982 the developers DeltaHome converted the mansion and other buildings into the present residential estate.

The floorplan:
This house fits a 64x64 Â lot, but I think you can make it a 50x40 if you lose part of the garden and the conservatories on each side.
Piano nobile furnished, the rest is up to your liking.
Hope you like it.

Just found this old account, and rather than starting a new blog, I thought Iâd just update this one.
There are a lot of blanks here, what with it being a 7 year old blog. Itâs the same age as my niece. Weird.
The first post is always a doozy, but so first Iâll try to summarise.
Over the last 7 years, what are some key happenings in my life and mental health journey? Ok, life first. I donât mean to brag, but imma brag a little here.
1) Iâm still with the same amazing guy I was when I started this blog. Crazy, right? Heâs been my rock. Heâs not without his own demons, but, as our wedding dance song proclaims, heâs âperfectly brokenâ for me.
Thatâs right: after 8 years he finally PROPOSED. Weâre tying the knot in November this year. Itâs happening shortly after my sister marries HER forever human, in just over a month. Wedding fever, I love it!!
2) We are now 2 doggos richer. Teddy Roofsevelt is our smol white potate, our Floofen Subwoofen, our âoh lawd he cominâ Mr. McChonkadonk⊠ok, you get it.
Elijah Woof is our aptly named skinny malinky scragamuffin, the #1 SnuggleMaster in our home and my personal (just quietly) favourite individual in the entire world, bar none. My fiancĂ©e is cool with this demotion in rank. Iâm aware that secretly, Teddy is above me, too. Theyâre the best, and usually the joint top items on our daily 3 âgratefulsâ list.
3) While in Auckland we bought our first house, waited for it to be built, lived there for a year or two while COVID ran rampant, and then promptly decided to move cities. Back home, (for me) to Christchurch. We currently live in a fabulous brand new 4 bedroom home with a yard and double glazing. We are supremely, unbelievably lucky. We sold just before the shit hit the proverbial housing market fan, and bought off the plans when Christchurch homes were still relatively affordable. This home and its central heating system regularly feature at number 2 of our list.
4) I believe was working in either customer service or my first âhalfway to graphic designerâ role at the time of the last post. Iâve come a long way from there, too.
Several unbelievably toxic workplaces, and a heroic amount of encouragement laterâŠIâm now an experienced UX designer working for a massive insurance company. Iâve been there for 3 years and they love me. Itâs a fantastic place to work and until a couple months ago, Iâd say it held an almost unhealthy portion of my self-worth. I burnt out a couple times recently, giving more than I should have to it (much to the horror and dismay of my wonderful boss, who immediately sent me for compassionate leave when he found out)
Itâs not that my work demands the extra effort to be successful; Itâs that Iâve found something that Iâm genuinely good at and love doing which actually earns me a living. Itâs tricky to switch off sometimes when I find it so rewarding, especially when itâs the first time Iâve felt truly confident in my ability to do something wel in my whole life. For my ADHD brain, it is an absolutely perfect fit, scratching all the right places. I look forward to making the 10 step hallway commute to my home office to work. (Parter and I both work remotely for our respective employers in Auckland). I now earn a similar salary to my partner, whoâs a senior developer.
Lately, though, thereâs been a bit of conflict with one person in particular thatâs been making it.. less enjoyable. I wonât go into detail here, but suffice to say I have learned to swing the pendulum back into a healthier realm of commitment. Iâm not defined by JUST what Iâm good at; work should always be âjust workâ, no matter how valued you feel, or how much you enjoy it. Ironically. It was a work colleague that told me this.
In terms of my medication and mental health journey, I think one of the main reasons I havenât been updating here is because thereâs not much to tell. I think Iâve had maybe one serious crash since my last entry, and it had a clear trigger. But then, I realise now that thereâs actually ALWAYS been a clear trigger. Properly reconciling that fact has been the key to my salvation. When I look back on previous crashes, I see a part of me, a little voice with a big message, which would wail âwhy is this happening to me again? Itâs too big! thereâs nothing I could have done! This came out of nowhere!!â
Now, I see that that voice was less like a Truth with a capital T, and more like a toddler screaming in the corner, wanting to avoid taking any responsibility for what was happening to me.
Properly accepting my role and my actions (or rather, my INaction) has changed everything. I havenât had a significant âcrashâ since, purely because Iâm aware and on the lookout for the warning signs. When they occur, I can see them for what they are, and act accordingly: thus preventing a buildup to the point of no return. Sounds simple, right? Duh.
I wanna say, itâs not like I havenât felt The Panic since then. Sometimes I still wake up in the middle of the night with the alarm bells ringing in my head.
âsomethingswrongsomethingswrongâ.
It still has that overwhelming power, that awful familiarity of being totally out of control.
But now, I have another voice that never existed before. One that says, with calm authority, âYou know what this is. No, you canât fight it, itâs happening. But you can survive it. Let it have its way, and it will pass.â
Iâll get the âsurgeâ a few times, (yâall anxious cretins know what I mean). The surge, which sends my heart rate ricocheting into the stratosphere, filling me with familiar dread. But then, it will subside into JUST my heart pounding. Instead of the panic being everywhere, everything, my whole reality stretching into forever, it just becomes a pounding heart. Some sweaty palms, a touch of nausea. Those I can ignore. And then, itâs gone. I go back to sleep.
Most of the time, I donât even wake my partner.
Iâm still on medication. But you know what? Iâm actually okay with this. I think wanting to get off them was a symptom that they werenât doing what they were supposed to. I definitely blame my adhd, rather than anxiety, for the constant urge to âchange things upâ and be Med-free.
Late last year I went back to the specialist here in Christchurch to address my underlying issue: the ADHD. I was first prescribed with Ritalin again (standard practice) and I got the same results as last time. Like, I was the same scatterbrained, forgetful mess I was before, only F A S T E R. And more cheerful about it. My god, the euphoria. But it wasnât addressing my core, pinball thoughts issue. I went back after a month to tell him it wasnât for me.
Instead of giving me a non-stimulant option, he gave me a trial on Ritalinâs cool, easygoing cousin: dislexamphetamine. Yes, itâs an amphetamine, but itâs extremely slow release. Like, 10-14 hours, with a very slow onset and a very gradual taper. It was love at first swallow (sorry- that was obscene).
I can honestly say Iâve never felt so on top of my adhd, and, by association, my anxiety too. We added bupropion to the mix to help address my impulsive behaviour, and like a magic combo, all my problems seemed to disappear. The only catch is that itâs not subsidised in NZ yet. Itâs in the works, but not yet. Thank god we have insurance.
Iâve been able to taper off my citalopram, and now Iâm about 2 and a half weeks SSRI free. Still on the seroquel (50mg) and epilem (500mg) at night. I do hope to step down to 25mg seroquel at some point because GOD, the midnight munchies got me gooood. Itâs really derailing my wedding weight loss goal. But not until after the op. Iâm taking my own advice from a previous post: one change at a time, and maintaining routine.
To be fair, I AM cycling through a lesser version of all the venlafaxine withdrawals, but itâs tolerable, and theyâre fading now. Thereâs no recurrence of anxiety, and I feel.. alive again. I tear up during stupid sappy movies, I feel this delicious sense of wellbeing when something goes right, and a flash of righteous indignance when someone does me wrong. Iâm feeling it all, and instead of it being scary or overwhelming, it just feelsâŠright, somehow. Comforting. And my libido is back!! I feel like a functioning human.
Donât get me wrong: I was doing just fine before, but now, looking back, I can see just how wide the gulf is between âfineâ and âgenuinely goodâ.
One more piece of news. After two major endometriosis operations, (the latest of which was in 2021), every possible contraceptive method and their horrendous side effects, one awful vasovagal response to an IUD insertion and ten years of âwe really DONâT want a baby, but what if we do at some point?â We finally made the decision. Iâm getting a hysterectomy. My uterus, cervix and tubes have caused me literally nothing but pain and trouble since my first period. Honestly? I canât wait to have them yanked out my vagayjay (and yes, thatâs how they remove âem.)
One last operation on 25th of June, and Iâll never have to worry about painful periods, endo complications, constant GI problems or contraception stress ever again. Or anymore surgeries. And bonus⊠Iâll never bleed again.
I can also kiss goodbye to painful sex, since that pesky hypersensitive cervix of mine is going in the trash, too. Itâs had an abnormal smear once before, so, as the doc said: âyou canât get cervical cancer without a cervix!â
Also, I wonât go through menopause because theyâre leaving my ovaries in there, (albeit nothing else).
Ok but something weird: would you believe that people often get their baby factory bits stuffed into a jar and returned to them? Like, itâs an actual thing that they have to ask everyone because a shocking number of people want this. Like, what do they DO with it? Sit it on the mantelpiece next to grandmaâs ashes?! Seems totally bizarre (and a little bit gross) to me. But to each their own.
After I picked my jaw up off the floor, I asked the nurse if instead of that, could I just donate it for research? She said no, because they have to pickle it in formaldehyde after chopping it up to check for disease. I mean, Iâve spent most of my adult like regularly opening my hoo-has to dozens of peering gynocologists. Iâm fairly medi-curious, due to my multiple issues, but that still seems a little⊠dark.
Just imagine: you take it home, store it on some dark shelf and forget about it. A few years later you get a new boyfriend, who discovers it while clearing out the garage.
âOh. Honey, look l, I canâ stop screamingâ I can explainâŠâ
Aaaaanyway, Iâve been writing for several hours now. Itâs okay: it counts as a hobby instead of doom scrolling. Iâm doing quite a bit of creative writing again because it brings me genuine pleasure. Even got myself a ReMarkable tablet for work, stories and journaling. Itâs been a game changer.
But now I think Iâll have a shower and do something vaguely productive.
Peace out, folks, and I hope to write again soon.

Moving into my flat!
I moved into my flat on Monday, December 18 with my flatmate Lauren, and needed to sort out at least the bare minimum of furniture! I managed to get a bed dropped off that day and took myself on a bus ride across town to KMart to get some sheets, pillows, hangers, and more. I hung up the only decorations I had (the Christmas garland mom sent with me and the Christmas pictures I colored a few days before) so that the walls weren't bare, unpacked all my things, and settled in.
This first week, I explored the area around me. One such area is the Avonside Red Zone, which has become one of my go-to walking areas. The red zone is an area of Christchurch where the land was deemed unsafe to build on post-earthquake. In the area where I tend to walk, there are still streets where you can see the remnants of driveways and make out the outline of the former property.
Along with the red zone, I still spent a bunch of time exploring the botanic gardens! Sometimes I feel like I took multiple pictures of the same flowers and bushes over multiple days, but it's so hard to capture the vibrance!
We have regular feline visitors at our flat. Sometimes they stay outside and sometimes they just stroll right in. Lauren is allergic to cats, so she ended up getting one of those magnetic screens in the hope that it would keep them out when the door is open for the breeze. Still, sometimes, like Batman below, they break right through and end up in the house.
One day, after a job interview, I also stopped at a cat cafe and got to hang out with a few Bindi look-alikes!
Spent a bit of time just settling in and getting ready for Christmas. I tried to apply for tons of jobs, but most companies are closed for at least two to four weeks around Christmas, so it didn't pan out to much. But the Christmas decorations were pretty!
