Zhou Yafu and Huo Buyi
Zhou Yafu, 周亞夫, was a minister in the early/mid Han period. His father was the paragon of military virtues, he made a name for himself fighting the Xiongnu with economic and military strategy, and he was responsible for ending the Rebellion of the Seven Princes in less than three months.
While Ling Buyi's character relies on a lot of tropes, there are also some particular historical figures that are being played with.
(There's a certain sense of humor to it in lltg (can't speak for the books) like making Ban Jia terribly sheltered and easily lost--snerk)
Some interesting things about Zhou Yafu:
He worked mostly under Emperor Wen's successor, Emperor Jing
The Rebellion of the Seven States was shut down under Emperor Jing
He was given the title "Defender-in-Chief" for, among other things, actually training his armies
He, like Huo Buyi, was General of the Cavalry and Chariots and deputy minister of the household
His older brother was executed for committing murder, thus he inherited his father's title and fief
Emperor Jing would eventually lose faith in Zhou Yafu and he would be fired and later imprisoned
When his son was discovered to be stealing from the Imperial Armory, they were both accused of treason, and he starved himself in prison
He tried starving himself once before in prison, but css his wife talked him out of it
Today he is thought of as some paragon of principled, martial virtue
There aren't a ton of direct parallels, but something about the details when Wendi was talking about his sworn brother, Huo Chong, reminded me of Zhou Bo, Yafu's father.
I'm sure it colored my research, but after I decided that lby was based on Zhou Yafu, I started thinking about the show as an au retelling. Like, history, but what if Zhou Bo and all of lby's siblings were murdered during the Lü Contention.
[As a further aside, even if I do think that Zhuo Yafu was the historical inspiration for Hou Buyi, Emperor Jing is not the third prince. Third prince is Emperor Ming]

For those looking for the “MARITAL BLISS” part of the story, here is a machine translated part of the epilogue.
▪️ Huo Buyi/Huo Budo/Huo ZhouMu is now a governor or head of state (vassal state) that he opened up during his exile* on the NorthWestern region, uniting the local tribes. Ah Xiu is a 14 year old grandson (heir) of one of the tribal leaders (who is leading other tribes) - this is how I understand it.
*he also conquered the Kingdom of Shu
----
Ah Xiu is becoming more and more free in the state pastoral (HB & SS residence/palace) which shows Huo ZhouMu trusted him more and more, but it also brought a little trouble to Ah Xiu - because he would always bump into the intimate behaviour of ZhouMu and his wife from time to time.
In fact, the local customs are open and young men and women have been accustomed to seeing Ah Xiu in a place to kiss or touch something, but somehow, he will still blush when he sees the ZhouMu couple affectionate. The same move, Brother Ah Yong and his good deeds are like cattle roaring, Ah Xiu is too lazy to see, but the ZhouMu couple can't say the tenderness and sweetness when they do it.
One day, Hou ZhouMu wanted to take Ah Xiu to the military camp outside the city, when it was not yet dawn, Mrs. ZhouMu came out with her hair scattered and confused to send him, her eyebrows were soft, and she was naked with a pair of snow-white lotus feet, and when ZhouMu saw her, he hugged her into his arms, and the two kissed passionately. Mrs. ZhouMu followed her husbands chin, to the long neck, nibbled his adam's apple, and finally kissed into the chest of ZhouMu's loose clothes, Huo ZhouMu was tall and strong, and as soon as his arms were raised, he lifted the lady in her entirety, kissed her earlobes and hollow of her neck, and then went down...
----------
Another time, the lady personally shaved the face of the state pastor, Ah Xiu sat cross-legged under the porch to endorse the book, from time to time to look back, saw the lady tenderly like water touching the face and neck of the state pastor, the state pastor put one hand on the waist of the lady and another on her hand, the two looked at each other and said endless affection. Ah Xiu finished memorizing the book and went back, and when he left, he suddenly thought that ZhouMu had one hand on his wife's waist, and another hand, where was it? Ah Xiu tried to recall that Madame's summer shirt was very wide, and the sleeves were particulary wide, and oh, ZhouMu's other hand seemed to reach into Madame's sleeve...
- What the idiot told him that Han Chinese people are very reserved and reserved! It's all a lie!
-----------
When Ah Xiu was able to write a complete family letter in Chinese characters, Mrs. ZhouMu was diagnosed as pregnant, and Huo ZhouMu froze on the spot, and his handsome and majestic face inexplicaply shed tears.
“Shao Shang, I, I...” Huo ZhouMu, who was cast in steel and iron, put his arm around his wife and choked up unspeakably.
Mrs. ZhouMu gently took her husband's head into her arms: “I know, I know... In the future, you will have many flesh and blood relatives, and you will not be the only one again.”
Huo ZhouMu raised his head, his eyes clear, and smiled with tears: “ No, since I saw you, I have not been alone.”
Although he did not know why, Ah Xiu's heart was also sour, so he cried. He felt that this marriage between the ZhouMu couple must have come bitterly and very difficult. It's great that they can finally become dependents (married).
Ah Xiu studied around Huo ZhouMu for many years, he personally watched Lady ZhouMu get pregnant, give birth, raise children, the great emperor in the distance sent things and doctors in a long convoy one after another and the ZhouMu couple returned to the capital from time to time to report, to visit their relatives, conferring titles, many rewards... Cycle.
Just as Mrs. ZhouMu said, Huo ZhouMu really had several flesh and blood relatives, although one was more naughty than the other, and the other was more angry than the other, but it was really good to be lively all day.
▪️ So, they weren’t shy! And they were very prolicfic with their baby making! I was thinking that their household staff and his subordinates were giving them a wide berth whenever Zisheng and Shaoshang were in close proximity to each other. They probably have this policy amongst themselves of announcing, discreetly perhaps, of “They are a metre apart... Rruuunnnn!!!!” hahahahha

If you Love Dilraba and Wu Lei CP, let's talk about what you would like them to see without a CP brain. I'll be up front, the idea of him working with any of the purple ladies gives me the hives. If purple is not your favorite color then come in and let's talk!
Non-CP Post, but these photos of Anle and Hou Buyi which make up my lock-screen are so cute and if you can survive seeing the photo then we are good even if you are not a Bird Egg.
Tumblr media
I know. I love both of them so much, and Zhou Yutong is also awesome. I cannot wait for Nothing But You. Our young man WL looks lovely here.
Tumblr media
In the meanwhile, I've started Wang Hedi's new drama. Is the eunuch, not a eunuch thing new to dramaland? I know it is common in web novels. Part of me thinks 30 would make a great eunach-not-eunach but I just think his acting is superb and he keeps improving himself as does 88 so they can do anything and I will watch it.
On the Rumor (so likely to be false) of Dilraba in a "SIster-(Milk) Dog" Romance if Wu Lei were impossible match which would make this Bird Egg very sad: Of all the choices for a 姐狗 romance, I'd consider Wang Hedi the best choice if it were absolutely impossible to see 30 and 88 together in another drama anytime soon and this melon about an age-gap romance is true. I hope that 2023 will bring better tidings to 30 and 88 - I'm a bit worried about j@y#@)k tbh but worst-case scenario maybe Blizzard (which is partially under this studio) won't work out and it will force 88 and 30 to work together in a new modern drama -yeah let's ignore the reality of 88's essential slave contract to that studio. It would suck for 30 as I think he is already working on his billiards game, which those of us who have seen his vlog know needs a little work. Pure fantasy. I digress.
88, I hope you do Scenery of the Side this year. It would be so awesome to see you play a Uyghur woman again (I bet it would be an interesting journey going from Anarhan to this new character) even if there is a lot of boring stuff going on as usually happens with more serious dramas. I will watch anything but horror for you beauty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
30 - two new films, Nothing But You, and potentially a romance with a much younger leading ZJM who also has barely done kissing scenes. As much as 30 would benefit from being the teacher - we all know he is a bit domineering in a sweet way - I personally have some feelings about her age coupled with the novel being so very full of love scenes (keeping in mind the censors, it might be okay, but cringe - WL is so mature to me at 23 that the young ones seem too young but I still need to watch Reset this week). Add to that, I foresee half of C-Ent either salivating in glee over the match because they just love him with younger ladies or secretly hoping she drops out and their favorite childhood CP with WL can replace her. Hopefully the purple people will be calmer; Bird Eggs are loving on ZYT even though we (and even some Alices I know) really wanted it for WL and Dils.
Just not GX - the idea of them kissing gives me the shivers and I think they would agree - brother and sister who fight a lot? Yes! I can see this. Sworn enemies. Yup. Lovers? Ew I don't know if I could watch that. Maybe ex-spouses? That would be OK. I haven't watched all of the Shadow, but what I saw they were not on friendly terms. That one modern drama with them is still on my list, but I go second lead or friend vibes from the MV I saw. Honestly, WL really has the best energy with older women from Dils to YR to LQ and now ZYT - dang that boy is made for 小奶狗。I really, really hope he does a modern romance or action drama without birds with 88 and they don't even have to discuss age. She looks so young in modern romances to me and who cares - how many zillions of C-Dramas have been made with obvious age gaps and people don't say a word
Tumblr media
OK I lied this IS 3088 CP-Related: The best drama from a web novel for Dils and WL would be Falling on a Spring Night; it would be amazing. If you haven't read that 3088 friendly novel - go read it now! Yes, it's crap but there are some golden moments such as how the younger man fell in love with the older woman. I just do not get anyone digging the 2nd lead in that book. He is an abusive F$^K seriously (Spoiler: he made the lead female eat hot chilis until she was hospitalized multiple times & I believe CW forced himself on her at one point) and I fear for humanity if we continue to be okay with abusers and like the idea of saving broken men. Yeah. No. The roles are literally made for Dils and WL - but some parts are tooo close to home, as in these characters were based on them for real. One plus - the age of the lead male is 20, so he could ratchet it up to a more palatable 23 now as he is that age. Yay! My step-dad was 22 when he started dating my mom, so I really have a soft spot for age-gap romances. He was very mature too. They married when he was 24 - Just saying.
This has been very random ADHD-driven rant.
Happy New YEAR of the Rabbit - 2023
新年快乐!
What kind of dramas do you want to see 30 and 88 do and what leading ladies/gentleman or none would you like to see? Am I the only one who does not want to think of Guan Xiaotong/Wu Lei in a romantic context? I didn't even grow up with them, it just FEELS wrong with their variety show interaction. Song Zhuer and Xiao Feng are okay.

WIP Whenever
Saw the WIP Whenever and it looked fun. Idk if I’‘ll ever really post this fic but it’s been somewhere to go with my lltg feelings lately.
Shaoshang clenched her fists as she stared after the crown princess. She was tired of this. Tired of the palace games. Tired of the bullying. And she was tired of Huo Buyi being gone. She missed her husband. But she had learned. In the time she had spent in the palace and the 5 years in seclusion with the empress, she was able to hold herself in check… mostly. But if her hand slipped and she added salt instead of sugar the next time she made a dish for the crown prince and princess to try, well no one needed to know.
Her time at the palace had taught her some hard lessons. While she could still get away with some inventive tricks, and her favorite was still when the crown prince and princess had come to check on her accounts and the ink splattered directly in the princess's face, it was getting harder. With the emperor stepping back more and the empress gone, Shaoshang knew her friends and influence in the palace grew smaller. And while she still didn’t like depending on Hou Buyi for protection and fighting her own battles, she was beginning to learn and see the advantage of having him talk to others or carry out punishment on her behalf.
But this time, this was too much. One of the accounts was missing and Shaoshang knew it was there earlier. Judging by the smug look of the princess, she knew exactly where that missing piece was.
“A Qi,” Shaoshang called out, knowing the man was around somewhere. Hou Buyi always left him to keep an eye out when the emperor sent him away.
“Yes young mistress,” A Qi said, appearing at her side.
“Get the carriage. We’re returning to our home,” she said.
“Young Mistress?” he questioned.
“I’m not spending another night here. We’ll come back and forth, like we do when Huo Buyi is here,” she said, already setting off to pack up a few things for the night.
“But, Young Mistress. Young Master said we were to stay here until his return. It’s safer,” he said.
“Safer for who?” Shaoshang asked, “If I stay here any longer, who knows what will happen or what tricks will be played.”
“Yes, Young Mistress,” A Qi said with a bow, before disappearing to ready the carriage. He knew exactly what she meant and while he wasn’t looking forward to the beating he would receive when the general learned he had let Shaoshang leave, he had a feeling it’d be better for everyone if they left the palace. He’d rather receive the beating than having to explain why Cheng Shaoshang was imprisoned or facing some form of punishment herself.
Shoshang blinked tiredly, as she stepped out of the carriage. But when she glanced up at the “Hou Residence”  sign she couldn’t help but smile, knowing what it meant to Huo Buyi and now her. She was home. It may not be their country home they talked about retiring to. But it was the place they had made home. Shaoshang accepted the hand down from the carriage and tiredly stumbled over the doorstep into the courtyard. She caught herself, suddenly missing Zisheng, realizing just how often he was there to catch her falls.. That didn’t matter now. What mattered was being home. She righted herself and shook her head before making the long walk to the first hall of their home.

Had to add another one. Yuan'er is the cutest child actress in a costume drama. Xu Feng and bad ass Shiba are two of my favorite side characters in this drama. You could have replaced the 2nd imperial couple and focused on them as far as I am concerned. In the bottom photo, SPOILER The Long Ballad
Ashile Sun is looking at a childish Xu Feng, who is envious of aSun's ability to bond with the little princess, and torn up with guilt and anger over the death of her father. Xu Feng proceeds to make a fool of himself while Ashile Sun looks on with anger and a guilty conscience which prompts him to reconsider being around little Yuan. There are a lot of unknowns here and you have to watch to find out more.
TLB is my favorite costume drama because of its message of peaceful co-existence and letting go of the need for revenge. Wu Lei's role of eventual peacemaker Ashile Sun and Ling/Hou Buyi are quite a contrast. For those that found catharsis in Hou Buyi's revenge, I ask you: Did Hou Buyi feel the same? I plan on looking at Ashile Sun, An Le, and Ling/Hou Buyi together; cannot wait for Anle Zhuan!
