Budget: Your budget plays a significant role in your transfer choice. While private car services offer luxury, they come at a higher cost. Balance your desire for comfort with your budget constraints.
Luggage: Consider the amount of luggage you'll have. Some services might have restrictions on luggage size or charge extra for additional bags.
Top Tips for a Hassle-Free Hotel Transfer Experience
Book in Advance: Don't leave your transfer to the last minute. Booking in advance ensures that your chosen service will be available and ready to whisk you away upon arrival.
Confirm Details: Double-check the details of your booking, including pick-up location, time, and contact information. Clear communication can prevent confusion.
Stay Connected: Ensure your phone is charged and you have access to your email or the transfer service app for any updates or changes.

surprise
summary ― you come over to australia to surprise sam
pairing ― sam kerr x reader
warning/s ― fluff, pregnancy
based off this request
Tumblr media
The drive from the airport to the hotel was short enough, the passing buildings keeping your mind at ease, your hand resting on your small bump. You had been fortunate enough with the travel from Heathrow over to Melbourne. The flight was surprisingly easy, considering you were just hitting your fifth month of pregnancy.
You had arrived back in Australia just after nine pm, lucky enough to call your wife before she was set to go to bed, wishing her good luck for her game tomorrow. You had been as sneaky as you could be, paying the ridiculous added fee to have wifi on board the plane so you could still text Sam - not wanting to make her suspicious. It also helped that you could text everyone who had helped you get over here to make sure everything was okay on their end.
She currently believed you were at your shared home back in London, her Chelsea teammates, Millie and Guro babysitting you whilst she was away. Although the original plan had always been for you to come, once you had found out you were pregnant Sam suddenly got very protective. She researched everything on both the baby’s safety and yours and had learnt that flying could cause problems for both of you. If Sam was anything, stubborn was her biggest trait - and she had decided that it was too dangerous for you to be fighting back and forth with the baby.
You let her have this, deciding that she would eventually back down and be okay with you flying.
She didn’t back down, and you both had to say your goodbyes as she made her way over to Denmark in October. Although she was only gone for a couple of days, you hated it. You hated waking up to an empty bed, you missed the way she would rest her hand over your stomach, as she ran her fingers along it. You missed the way she’d give you a kiss on the lips, before bending down to kiss your stomach too. You just missed her, and although Sam would tease you about it constantly - you knew she missed you too.
The second she came home, you had decided that you couldn’t do this distance again and set up a doctor's appointment during one of her training sessions.
The appointment was simple enough, you asked every question under the sun about flying whilst pregnant, and the dangers that may arise if you were, Your doctor answered every single one - not a hint of judgement in her voice as she helped lessen your stress.
After hearing her give you the all-clear for international flying, you shot right home calling up Alanna to get her to help you book everything for the game. You were a little disheartened when you realised the flight Sam was on was completely booked, as well as every other flight that day and the next couple of days after.
You almost gave up, until Alanna found a flight that would arrive the night before their game against Sweden. You booked that same night, and Alanna sent an email to whoever was dealing with accommodation to let them know that you would be joining.
During the rush of looking for flights, you had decided that you would surprise Sam - you wanted to see her face as she realised you were there, cheering her on. Alanna agreed, and let them know that you would require a room to yourself for the first night you landed in Australia but after that - well, it was obvious you’d be rooming with Sam after that.
So, like planned Sam and you had said your goodbyes - Sam kissing you and your belly over and over again. You both gave sad smiles, as she waved goodbye and made her way onto the plane. You knew logically you would be seeing her in just a few days, but any distance was enough to make you upset.
The hotel came into sight soon enough, the Matilda’s team had sorted a private transfer for you - which you were forever grateful for, your body aching and in need of a warm shower and a comfy bed.
The lift takes you straight up to your level, your suitcase trailing behind you as you scan your key card and open the door. The lights blind you for a few seconds, blinking a few times for you to adjust to the new lighting. The door shuts behind you with a small click, the bed looking perfectly comfy as you flop backwards onto it. A sigh leaves your lips as you close your eyes once again.
Although your body clock was technically still on ‘London’ time, your pregnancy body clock was constantly tired, a small stretch of your limbs before you pulled yourself up once again. Although you were one quick blink away from falling asleep, you forced yourself into the shower - washing away the last twenty-four hours. You make your way back to bed, your head hitting the pillow and sleep comes instantly.
A knock interrupts you, your phone dropping from your hand and onto the bed, as you make your way to the door. Alanna and Caitlin standing on the other side, smiles on both their faces as you pull them into a group hug.
They follow you back into the room, the door closing as you sit down on the bed, Caitlin joining you as Alanna stays standing. They ask how you’ve been, and how the flight was as you ask them about training and this afternoon's game. Caitlin’s hand had joined yours on your stomach, the baby giving you both a small kick - Caitlin’s mouth dropping open.
“I felt that!” she practically screams, you laugh along as the baby kicks once again.
The three of you continue to talk for a few minutes, discussing your plans for this afternoon. Alanna and you agreed that it would be easier if took another private transfer to the stadium, figuring it’d save the hassle of waiting for an Uber but also keep you away from Sam (not wanting to ruin the surprise).
The mention of the striker gets both girls gloating on how mopey your wife had been the past of days. Always mentioning how much she missed you and the baby; you laugh along with them but feel a sense of pride fill your heart.
God, you loved that woman.
Soon enough the two Matidas say their goodbyes, you wishing them both luck and telling them to look after Sam for you. The door shuts behind them, and the room falls to a silence. Nerves of the game now erupting in your stomach. You had been so caught up in trying to keep the surprise from Sam that you hadn’t thought about how’d she react.
Would she be mad that you went against her word? You knew that the doctor had given you the all-clear, but Sam was still worried - and to be fair she had only asked you this one thing. You know how much Sam would stress about things, and her knowing you were home safe was probably one of the only factors in her life right now that she could count on. Except you were now here, thousands of kilometres away from where she had left you.
Your thoughts get interrupted by another knock on the door, this time the driver from last night ready to take you over to the game. You both chat about the game as you make your way downstairs towards the car. Katrina’s mum, Linda and Harper were downstairs waiting for you and you couldn’t help but smile as Harper let out a squeal once she saw you. Throwing her arms up for you to grab her.
You of course do, planting kisses all over her face, her gigglings filling the reception. The three of you then make your way into the car, The whole way to the stadium music that katrina had made just for Harper was playing, you and Linda getting involved with and singing with her. Her giggles brought smiles to everyone in the car.
The stadium was getting busy as you arrived, gold and green filling the areas as fans took to the stands. You thanked the driver, as the three of you hopped out - Harper wanting to go back in your arms but her grandmother telling her to just hold your hand to give you a break. As much as you love Harper, you sent her a thankful smile. Carrying your baby was straining enough.
The seats were great, the excitement of the crowd only growing your excitement too. The thought of seeing Sam again kept a smile on your face. You have taken the job of keeping Harper occupied before the game, her colouring book laying on the chair as the two of you colour it in. Linda braiding her hair whilst she was distracted.
“You excited for the baby?” she asked, you lift your head as you nod.
“Yeah, Sam and I have talked about having kids for years” you look back down at Harper, somehow your smile growing even bigger. “I mean I love kids, always wanted some of my own but didn’t know if that was possible you know?”
She nods her head, knowing exactly what you meant. Her own daughter had the exact same thoughts, decided to go through IVF without a partner and out came Harper.
“You’re going to be a great mother”
You blame the pregnancy hormones when the tears start welling up in your ears, she notices straight away, a small laugh leaving her lips as she pulls you into a hug and rubbing your back.
“Oh, honey. There’s nothing to cry about” You let her hold you a little longer, shaking your head as you laugh in agreement. You start to wipe the tears away as you both pull back.
“I know. I know. I just - Thank you. I means a lot, especially coming from such a great mother and grandmother”. The two of you continue to bond over baby related topics, and before you know it the cheering of the stadium starts intensifying.
You feel your emotions starting up again as you spot Sam coming onto the field, Harper jumping in her seat - both yours and her grandma’s hands holding onto her so she doesn’t fall - as she spots her mum.
The starts before you know it, everyone watching every move made. You’re thankful that you have a good view as you watch Sam on the field. After being with Sam for so many years you could almost sense what she was thinking on the field, watching how she watches where the ball goes.
Thirty five minutes in and still no goal, you could see both teams were getting frustrated.
You watch the ball get kicked to Sam, she passes it to Katrina who’s kicks it - an opposing team member getting it before Cailtin manages to steal it off them. She holds it for a few seconds before passing it to Hayley - the crowd starting to pick up with our team being so close to the net, you can’t help but join them.
You spot the second Hayley clocks it towards Sam, the way the ball falls into the goal, the crowd screaming their heads off, you included. Harper jumps up and down, squealing as you spin her up and plant kisses on the side of her head.
“Did you see that baby!” you happily squeal, her nodding her head as she throws her arms in the air. The surrounding fans that heard the interaction joining in with us in celebration.
Half time comes, the only goal being from Sam. You offer to grab the three of you drinks, but Linda tells you to stay with Harper and she’ll go get them You don’t argue because you were more than happy to hang out with Harper, but also you could feel yourself getting tired again.
Harper seems content enough with sitting in your lap, playing with your hair before moving her hands down to you belly.
“Baby?” her eyes don’t leave your stomach, as you run your hands over her little braids.
“Yeah, there’s a little baby in there Har” The baby gives a little kick, Harper looking up at you - her eyes completely wide open.
“What that?”
You laugh a little at her reaction, bringing one of your hands onto of her’s.
“It was the baby kicking, they were just saying hello”
She takes the answer with a serious nod, bringing her lips to your stomach and planting a kiss on them. “‘Ello baby” the baby kicks once again, almost in response. You let Harper continue to rub your belly, talking to it as you watch over the field.
Linda returns just as they blow the whistle for the start of the second half, although when you go to move Harper you both realise she’d fallen asleep.
The game moves on, and when that final whistle goes off Australia had won, four to nothing. The crowd screams with pride - the girls taking it all in. You don’t know how but Harper manages to stay sleep during the whole celebration, you rub her back as you stay seated - not wanting to awake her just yet.
The crowds start to move out, Linda saying she would meet the girls downstairs in the change room. You nod your head and tell her you’d stay here until Harper wakes up. You look down at the sleeping child in your lap, her head resting on your chest as you feel her breath on your shoulder.
You gave her a few more minutes, and just as you went to shake her awake she let out a small yawn as her eyes blinked open.
“Hey babygirl” you whisper, not wanting to startle her, she blinks her eyes a couple more times, nuzzling her head into your chest.
“Y/n?” her little voice makes you ‘coo’ as you tighten your grip just slightly.
“Yeah baby, it’s me”
“Mumma?”
“Yeah baby, we’re gonna see mumma. But I need you to let me get up okay” She nods her head, as she helps you move her over to the spare seat next to you. You bring yourself up as your stretch, running your hands down you stomach. You watch as Harper rubs her eyes, before grabbing her under the armpits and pulling her back into your arms. She rests her head back on your shoulder as you make your way up the stairs and towards the change rooms.
Once you had made it down under the stadium and towards the change rooms, the sounds of the team celebrating got louder and louder. You had almost expected Harper to get more energetic as you got closer, but she seem content with just laying on your shoulder - you didn’t mind either.
You spotted Linda soon enough, the girls in a circle as they celebrated. She catches your eye, and shakes her head as she looks at Harper in your arms - a smile on her face. You can see her hint at asking if you wanted her to take Harper of you but you shook your head, as you give a little bounce in your step.
Look around the circle, a smile on your face. You were so proud of the whole team, as everyone else watching them was. They continued to celebrate, you bopping along to the song they sang - making sure to still support Harper.
You lift your eyes off Harper and immediately catch Sam’s. Her mouth wide open, you watch her blink her eyes twice before breaking away from the circle and running towards you. The crowd seems to catch on as they let out calls and cheers.
“You’re here?” you let out a small laugh, as you nod your head. Katrina had made her way towards you guys too, taking Harper out of your hands.
“I’m here baby” You lip goes inbetween your teeth, the nerves from before coming back. Before you could go to apologise, Sam’s lips are on yours. Her hands grabbing onto your waist to pull you in closer. The cheering for the team manages to get louder, as you continue to kiss your wife.
She pulls away, her eyes slightly watery as she looks you up and down. She bends down, her hands now resting on the sides of your stomach as her lips press against the bump.
“Hi baby” she mumbles onto your stomach, planting a kiss before continuing “I’m so happy that you and your mumma gotta watch me win - even if she’s meant to be resting back home in London” you roll your eyes at the comment, giving a slight tug of her hair that your hand managed to find it’s way into during the whole ideal. She smirks a little at the reaction, coming back up so you were face to face.
“How are you here? We called last night and you were at home”
“I had just gotten off the plane, do you know how hard it is to find a quiet spot in the airport?”
She shakes her head, the smile never leaving her lips.
“You’re absolutely crazy - you know that?
You bring your lips back to hers, “Only for you baby. Only for you”

formula 1 newcomer lewis hamilton is interviewed ahead of the australian grand prix - 2007 (transcription under the cut)
Interviewer: "...performed in GP2 last year, the spirited, aggressive, courageous style in which he took the title, but how will this style transfer to Formula 1 as Lewis Hamilton, this weekend in Melbourne, is given his great chance in grand prix motor racing. What was the moment like for you when Ron Dennis and Martin Whitmarsh actually told you that you were gonna be a Formula 1 driver with McLaren?" Lewis: "It was quite an unreal moment, to be honest. I mean, I was invited to Ron's house, so I was sat there with my two bosses and they sat there and said, 'Okay, we've decided not to take you to China or Japan' - which was a bit of a relief, because I wasn't prepared for those races. And then they said, 'But we've decided you're gonna be our race driver', and it was sort of like... I had to bite my tongue and just try and put on a professional face. But it was an amazing moment; really, my dream had come true, so..." Interviewer: "So what has surprised you most as you've become assimilated into the team and its very extensive winter testing program, as well? What have you learned?" Lewis: "The most surprising thing would be how intense it is, in terms of understanding the technical side of the Formula 1 car, and, physically, it's quite a big step. Most drivers, when they get in first, they don't really think it's a huge step from GP2, but once you start getting into the race distances, it really is a big step up. So training a lot more-sort of 5 hours a day-preparing for that first race, and then understanding their strategies, pit stops, everything there is on the technical side. Because the geometry of the car is completely different, the engines are a lot different, and you have a lot more aero, so there's just so much information to take in and I'm still learning, and I'm sure that even Michael Schumacher was probably still learning." Interviewer: "And how does it feel? How exhilerating is it to sit in the cockpit of a Formula 1 car and really push it to its limit?" Lewis: "Well, the thing is, the first time I got in it-it was a fantastic feeling, obviously-but it was tough. The car was driving me, and you really are working very hard to get the most out of the car on one lap, and as soon as you start to get used to it you're able to then take control and sort of sit back and, really, it comes a lot easier. But, again, it's extremely tough, but it's fantastic driving the thing. It's so quick, so much speed, and adrenaline is pumping nonstop. And it's really difficult to describe it, but it's completely different to any other car I've driven." Interviewer: "The other guy that you've got to get to know is your teammate, double world champion Fernando Alonso. What sort of impressions have you formed so far?" Lewis: "Well, the first time we met was last year in Turkey. I was in the hotel and he was having dinner in the restaurant, and so was I with my dad, and he finished and then he came over and introduced himself. And I was really surprised; I was sort of taken back. 'Wow, the world champion is recognizing me and came over to say hello.' But he's very down-to-earth, he's very relaxed, very calm, and I think we share a lot of the same sort of personality. I mean, he likes to just stay relaxed and try to sort of stay out of the media; he doesn't really like too much of the attention. But he loves to race, so we obviously share that in common. But he's very, very focused, works very hard, so when you're at the test there's a lot you can learn from him, just about his approach. But at the races, there's gonna be even more." Interviewer: "So how much do you see, certainly the first half of the season, as a learning opportunity within the team, or how much is it gonna be a competitive oportunity?” Lewis: "I think, for the main part of it, it definitely has to be a learning experience. You have to sit back and... Definitely is gonna be a learning... As I said, it's a very steep learning curve, so take it in my stride, learn as much as I can from the team and from Fernando and Pedro. But, at the end of the day, my goal is to win, so I'll do whatever I need to do this year to do that, but you can't run before you can walk, so just step by step." Interviewer: "When you sit on that grid ahead of the start in Melbourne, what sort of moment is that gonna be for you, and your family, as well, who have been so supportive?" Lewis: "For me, I think... It's difficult to really describe how I'm gonna feel. I don't know. I mean, it's something I've been working for for many years, and to finally be sitting there... 'Cause every year I've been watching the grand prix and the first grand prix is one of the most exciting ones, and now I'll be sitting there on the grid. And just trying to anticipate what position I'll be in, what the feeling would be like and whether my nerves would be through the roof, but that's really difficult to imagine, so, again, we just have to wait and see. But for my family, they're extremely proud. All of the hard work that they've done over the years, they really paid off, and now they're just really excited to see me race and... I can't wait to get to the first race and really... Hopefully they'll all be there." Interviewer: "You say it's been a great journey. I think it's only just the beginning. We wish you all the best." Lewis: "Thank you very much."

Bye bye Wellington and New Zealand.
Been through immigration and security, waiting to board my rebooked Qantas flight to Melbourne and on to Bangkok with Thai Airways 12.30am tomorrow, then four hours by bus back to the family around noon Sunday.
Not the end, but a big life change ahead, and no plans on returning to NZ, didn't intend to be here this long.
Thanks for the memories.
1 April 2023.
April Fool's day from Air NZ!
NOTE: I was booked to fly to Sydney at 6.30am but Air New Zealand cancelled, not postponed, that flight. It was a ten hours wait, and fortunate to get a seat with Qantas.
Then in Melbourne a further six hours waiting for the re-booked flight with Thai Airways, my favourite airline.
Extremely disappointed with Air NZ. Their communication was appalling. I don't usually fly with them (Qantas, Singapore, Thai my preferences) and certainly would not ever book international flights with them again.
Our overnight hotel booking and airport transfers in Bangkok were wasted - I wasn't there!

How to Save Money on Private Airport Transfers in Melbourne
Transferring the Melbourne Airport (MEL) to your hotel or to the downtown area doesn't need to cost you the entire travel budget. When you make your reservations ahead, researching the various transfer companies, and taking advantage discounts as well as loyalty programmes that allow you to save money on an expensive airport chauffeur but not sacrifice on the quality.
Learn more about ways to maximize your experience when you transfer and stay clear of unexpected costs.
Know the cost-related factors
One of the primary aspects to take into consideration when selecting the airport transfer services is what it's going to cost you. There are a variety of factors that will affect the price which include the type of vehicle you pick and additional charges like fees for tollways and airport charges as well as other costs that are not disclosed.
If you're traveling on your own or traveling with others it is important to be at ease and secure on the journey to where you want to go. But, traveling on public transportation using luggage may be difficult in particular if there are youngsters or older people within your group.
Private airport transfer Melbourne offers you a comfortable, easy, and luxurious travel experience. The services provide a selection of vehicles that can be adapted to various sizes of groups. These services can also help you save cash by offering a more economical alternative to taxis. Additionally, many of them offer other services in the deal like beverages and snacks.
Compare Transfer Options
If you're in search of a low-cost option that provides more convenience and ease than public transportation options, private airport transfer services could be the perfect choice for your plans to travel. Through services such as Melbourne Premium chauffeurs and Melbourne Premium Chauffeurs, you will be able to enjoy the experience of a lifetime that goes beyond the taxi services. Private transfers can be a great option for travelers with elderly relatives or children who might struggle with the hassles of public transport. Apart from allowing both of you to enjoy a relaxing time together These transfer services typically offer hourly services, which makes an excellent alternative for travelers with an unplanned layover.
Another benefit of private transfers is the fact that they are based on fixed prices which provide transparency and help you budget your money efficiently. This contrasts with other transport services which charge hidden charges and increase rates during peak hours.
Make a reservation in advance
The longer you get away from airport transfers, the more efficient. Instead of bargaining with taxi drivers or negotiating in a crowded bus system booking a private taxi prior to your travel date in order to secure the best price. You will also save yourself from unexpected expenses.
If you're travelling on your own or in or with a group of buddies If you're traveling with a group of friends, the appropriate Melbourne Airport transfer services are vital to ensure your comfort and convenience. By using services like Melbourne Premium Chauffeurs, you will be relaxed right from the time you land at the airport till the time you're dropped off at your destination. Additionally, you will take advantage of the comforts of your own vehicle with no hassle of breaking into a larger group for transportation or stressing about the amount each one has to pay for their fare.
There is an executive-driven service that meets the needs of your trip whether it's a shared taxi to a luxury limousine for a reasonable price, when you book in advance through Klook's site or application. Be sure to keep updated in relation to your flight's status so the driver will be able to meet at the right time and assist with your luggage when you arrive.
Think about alternative transfer methods
There's an array of methods to save money for the cost of your Melbourne Airport transfer. If you research options and make reservations beforehand, you'll be able to have peace of mind and an unwinding journey, with no cost.
Furthermore, a lot of private companies have a seat option that lets you purchase the seats you'll need. This allows you to optimize your spending and also ensures you're in a car that is able to meet the requirements of the size of your group.
Additionally, private transfers generally have fixed prices which provide transparency and allow for an efficient budget planning. Contrast this with ride-sharing applications with a variable rate based upon demand and other variables. This allows you to plan your journey and prevent unexpected expenses. Furthermore, a lot of private airport transfers offer amenities like complimentary beverages and WiFi to improve your travel journey.
Make the most of loyalty programs as well as discounts
If you're in Melbourne because of its captivating cafe culture and street art or to conduct business Melbourne has a variety of alternatives for transportation. This includes taxis or ride-sharing services, as well as transfer services for private flights from businesses such as Transfeero. The most efficient option for your requirements starts by understanding the variables which affect fares, and then organizing your travel plans.
Certain traditional taxi companies like 13CABS or Silver Top Taxis, offer an online estimate of the cost of fares, while taxi apps like Uber and Ola frequently offer promo discount codes and coupons. Furthermore, the family-friendly bus hire companies like Dhillon Bus Charter prioritize comfort and cost and often offer loyalty programmes as well as discounted rates for frequent traveller.
A discerning tourist who would like to have a relaxed transfer from Melbourne Airport to their accommodation or venue for a meeting, think about hiring an airport transfer that is private. The service offered will greet you at the airport and assist you with your luggage and then transport the passengers to their destination using a chauffeured automobile.
Optimize Your Itinerary
If you're an entrepreneur working on the go or are a family on vacation booking private airport transfers will ensure that your travel experience begins and concludes without a hitch. Do not have to bargain at taxi drivers getting through the rental car lines, or itching to search through ride-sharing applications. If you have arranged a transfer it is easy to leave the plane and get into the chauffeured vehicle.
For the best savings To maximize savings, you should book to save money, book your Melbourne airport shuttle ahead of time for a guarantee on price. Make sure to choose an organization that provides rewards programs and discounts for frequent customers. This can supply customers with benefits such as discounts on rates, no-cost upgrade, or priority bookings.
Also, be sure to plan your airport transfer to the time that is not peak. In peak times when traffic gets crowded, and driving conditions may be unstable. In addition, arriving at an airport in these hours can lead to long waits for check-in, and then security.

THE HISTORIC TOWNSHIP OF AVENEL, VICTORIA. 1873
… And the NED KELLY connection.
Tumblr media
The historic township of Avenel lies about 125 kms north of Melbourne, and 20 north of Seymour. The Hume Highway once passed through the town but this was by-passed by the Hume Freeway in 1981.
The township has today a population of around 1100.
This 151 year old photo looks in a north easterly direction toward the township from Henry Street. Directly ahead is the old stone bridge which crosses Hughes Creek. The bridge was built in 1859 by Hugh Dalrymple. This was at a time Avenel was a major coach stop on the route to northern and north eastern Victoria, and ultimately Sydney.
The 165 YEAR OLD BRIDGE stands today. So does the 1847 built ROYAL MAIL HOTEL: The site of the afore-mentioned stagecoach stop.
Tumblr media
The ROYAL MAIL HOTEL was built by James Hilet in 1847. In 1862 the license was transferred to Esau and Elizabeth Shelton, who operated the hotel while bringing up their young family.
Four years later in 1866, the Sheltons were to play a significant role in the life of a young Avenel resident by the name of Edward Kelly, better known as Ned.
THE KELLY FAMILY OF AVENEL…
In 1863 John 'Red' Kelly, with his wife Ellen (nee Quinn) and their young family - including 8 year old Edward, moved to Avenel from Beveridge. Beveridge is about 80 kms south of Avenel and 45kms north of Melbourne.
The Kelly’s rented an 80 acre farm and set about establishing themselves. Young Edward attended Avenel common school with his sisters, his brothers Dan and James being too young at the time. Edward was considered an ’above average' student.
One day in 1866, an 11 year old Ned was returning home from school when he spotted 7 year old Richard Shelton struggling to stay afloat in the flooded Hughes Creek. Richard, the son of the hotel proprietors, had fallen into the creek while crossing it.
Edward Kelly, at significant risk to himself, leapt into the water and managed to drag Richard out, no doubt saving his life.
Richard's parents were understandably tremendously grateful. As a sign of her gratitude Elizabeth Shelton hand made and embroidered a silk sash which she presented to Ned in appreciation.
NED TREASURED THE SASH FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE.
As a sign of his high regard, he ensured he was wearing it under his armour 14 years later at what he knew might be his last day alive. This was June 28 in 1880 and the scene was the siege of Glenrowan, when the Kelly gang was wiped out and Ned was shot and captured.
Ned Kelly was hanged at the Melbourne Gaol (now Old Melbourne Gaol) on November 11 of that year.
The sash survived and is today on display, complete with Ned’s dried bloodstains, at the Ned Kelly Museum in Benalla, about 90 kms north east of Avenel. Photo below.
POSTSCRIPT…
Ned’s father (Red) died in Avenel in 1866 and the family moved to Greta in Victoria's north east, to be closer to Ellen's family... the Quinns. With this move, 12 year Ned became the notional head of the household. He was soon to become known Australia wide, even internationally.
