As Olivia’s wearing two different funeral outfits my guess is Season 2, Episode 1 starts with Viserys’ funeral and ends with Jaehaerys’.

Viserys has to have a funeral, he was King after all but this leads to a riot by the smallfolk. Word would have come that Aemond’s a kinslayer, please don’t forget how evil killing your own blood is considered in Westerosi culture, and Aegon threw him a feast in response.

I can see this being a trigger, people calling for Queen Rhaenyra I Targaryen and justice for Prince Lucerys Velaryon. Judging by the trailer this is going to be similar to the Kingslanding riot in Game of Thrones 2x06.

Alicent and Helaena are clearly terrified and in panic:

They underestimated Rhaenyra’s popularity and this was the result. So I can see why Alicent would be wary of furthering the war and wishing to see an end to the violence, she most likely thinks this is no longer a fight they can win. This in turn however causes conflict with Aemond, so he makes that disrespectful comment about her. This honestly makes a lot more sense and would be a lot better writing wise.

Nevertheless, public opinion shifts in the aftermath of Blood & Cheese. Jaehaerys’ murder clearly brings people back to their side, as I said kinslaying is an unforgivable evil.

Team Green won over the people, they show Jaehaerys’ face to remind the smallfolk that a child was murdered. Alicent and Helaena are front and centre to remind them a mother and grandmother were forced to witness this barbarity.

It’s honestly brilliant PR, in the same episode Team Green lost the people and then won them back. Let’s just see how long they can hold on to it.

Targaryen Fashion 92 - 109 AC featuring Aemma and Rhaenys! Starting with 92 AC when Rhaenys' dad dies and she gets disinherited, the Council of 101 AC in their house colors, and 109 AC when Aemma dies (in my fanfic timeline, in canon she dies in 105 AC, the girls are also aged up from their book counterparts) also i put way more detail into the later years since they were for fancier occasions, the 92 AC dresses look super plain in comparison though

Alicent’s Green Dress

So I finished sewing my cosplay version of Alicent’s dress from season 1 🥰 it’s far from perfect but given the materials I had I’m pretty happy with it, I’ll try doing a photoshoot of me wearing the dress 💚

Yes, these are! Well Rhaenyra’s is a one for one. Alicent has a few green dresses in the post time-jump era that can be my older green design. But I was definitely looking at the high-necked Seven green dress as a comparative.

The Wedding We Should Have Got (one of them anyways)

There’s only some things I would change from this lovely art (ertacaltinoz on instagram) and that is that Rhaenys and Corly refused to attend Viserys wedding to Alicent bc they took it as a slight against their daughter Laena.

And I’d add this crown to Rhaenyra’s design:

A nod to the jade tiara Daemon brought back for Rhaenyra, the tiara having allegedly belonged to the Empress of Leng.

So just to clarify, we’d go from this:

The reason I find the dress design so appealing is bc I think it reminds me of a more fitted, more appealing version of this dress in some of the artwork of Queen Rhaenyra:

HOTD Costume Continuity.

This is my favourite inconsistency in the show. Nothing makes less sense and it's my favourite thing.

So this show is notorious for strange costuming. Whether that be mischaracterisations or tying character outfits to relationships rather than have it be a representation of the characters, it's frustrating as a fun having theorist but incredible as someone who loves costumes.

Typically in productions they'd have someone track the continuity of the costumes to ensure these inconsistencies don't occur but because house of the dragon is a money laundering scheme (a joke, don't sue me), they didn't have one or that person was really bad at their job.

Examples:

1. Alicent with 2 kids in 5 years.

This is one of the better examples because they keep the dress and the accessories, but they do change her hair. To signal the length of time, the first one is her marriage announcement. By the second one, Aegon and Helaena are already born.

2. Jace and Luke have a style.

This one is incredibly funny because they have two sets of actors for the same characters in the same outfit. They made the same outfit twice for younger and older variations of the characters. Also, I don't know why they had to be this matchy matchy. Joff could not care less about their agenda, my sweet prince.

3. Corlys,I'm sorry

They had this man in the same doublet and belt combination for 20 years. Daemon was still heir, and Rhaenyra was crowned Queen in the time they kept Corlys in this outfit. The richest man in Westeros.

4. Alicent again.

This one is less funny, They had her change her outfit to have dinner, then change her outfit to meet with the council and Rhaenys to change back into the same outfit to crown Aegon.

Changing course to the days at a time arguement.

1. Alicent 1.

That's her speaking to her father before he departs, speaking to Larys in the garden and confronting Rhaenyra in the garden after the day. The styling stays exactly the same, unfortunately.

2. Alicent 2.

They have her in this outfit for days. Even after the tourney.

3. Rhaenyra 1 and 2.

Now the 1st one is a 6 year time jump, and the second is 5, but my issue is why would Rhaenyra at 14 wear the same dress as Rhaenyra at 19. Also, the red dress happens back to back episode wise.

4. Rhaena and Helaena.

I'll say that Baela might be their favourite young girl because she never wears an outfit more than once a day. Rhaena and Helaena do, though.

So they do it a lot. These aren't all the examples, I just refuse to focus on men and think that this is funny.

Watching season two and than looking back is making me realise sooo many of the season one costumes are so BADDD 😭😭 omgg season two costumes are so beautiful thank the lord

The writing on hotd is inconsistent and demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding of the source material's themes that's genuinely going to lead them to a metaphorical dead end pretty quickly. Like it absolutely sucks but by god am I also enjoying the hell out of this mess (and getting to complain about it).

That being said, the visuals this season are fucking incredible- I am so glad we're getting actual good costuming this season because s1 was an inconsistent mess and this season we're actually seeing consistent silhouettes/styles for each of the characters and actual EMBROIDERY instead of the gaudy mismatched mess of trims and fantasy rick rack that we got in s1. Like the construction alone of the gowns this season is 8000 times better already, and that's not even taking into account the better quality of s2's fabrics.

Also someone on the production team has finally figured out that Eve Best is the hottest person on the show and are FINALLY outfitting her accordingly. God fucking bless whoever got them to get rid of that damn hair bump-it.

Rhaenyra Targaryen and hairstyles

I don't know how accurate this is and also it's only about Emma's Rhaenyra so I'm starting from 1x06, but I feel there is a connection between Rhaenyra's hairstyles and her grief.

Writing for the Medium, Logan Kelly writes:

Film is first and foremost a visual art form, so we wish to show rather than to tell. That is why for my money I posit that the most effective and interesting representation of change in film is through hair.

Episode 6 starts with the birth of her son Joffrey, we see in the past ten years Rhaenyra has built a happy life for herself. She has three beautiful children, a man she loves and a supportive husband. Her hair is a visual representation of this, it's loose and open, cascading down her shoulders.

Then by Episode 7 she's been run out of Kingslanding and Harwin's killed, she can't publicly mourn him but we see her grief via her tight braids. Her hair is wrapped tightly, less welcoming and free like the previous episode.

By Episode 8 six years have passed, she's regained her happiness and built a home for herself in Dragonstone. Once again her hair is visual evidence of her happiness but the fact that her long hair is behind her shoulders rather than in front also tells us she's tense. Luke almost lost his inheritance and she's well aware her time away from Kingslanding allowed the Greens to create a power vacuum.

Look at her hair in the scene with Luke on Dragonstone vs. the subtle change when she gets to Kingslanding. The braids in Dragonstone are small and delicate whilst when she gets to the capital city they’re larger and more chunky, these are warrior plaits and she’s a warrior fighting for her son.

Then at the start of Season 2 Rhaenyra has lost:

Luke

Visenya

Her throne

We see this grief on display not only through Emma's fantastic acting but also in Rhaenyra's hairstyles:

Her hair is always in a tight braid, pulled away from her face. She's not happy so gone are her wavy locks, instead she's depressed and vengeful so throughout the season we only see her in these warrior plaits reminiscent of Queen Visenya Targaryen.

I wonder if that's why in Daemon's vision her hair is out, he thinks once she's on the Iron Throne she'll finally be happy?

This happiness of course is once again symbolised through her hair.

Some more redesigns!

Details Below The Cut

Trying to keep things consistent, of course in early/mid medieval times depending on the occasion or type of dress the cut/style/collar could be pretty fluid. I love the idea of the Targs inspired by Byzantine era fashion and ofc GoT introduced asymmetric elements in their design. I generally want them to have straight/slightly curved or v necklines but my canon for the Jaehaerys-era dynasty is that the royal family were trying to align more with the Westerosi elite so dressing more like them and picking up a bit of their prejudices *cough cough Jaehaerys looking at you* Anyways

My favorite, I think she just looks so pretty in this redesign. The absence of chemises is terrible ofc and puffs really make things look more sumptuous. The collar is iffy cause we never see anything like it again even though it could've worked if they stayed consistent. Had to add the Visenya braid of course!

The ladder dress is so anachronistic like even though it's cute all of Ali's mother's dresses look too modern and the bandage bodices look too different. No chemise or puffs, I'm just going to say the 'adult' ladies show a bit more skin and leave it at that since I still wanted the dress to seem 'mature' and with the puffs it wasn't working. Also my canon is that the open flowy sleeves was the style that Aemma introduced to court as queen.

Not enough jewelry, some of their choices look really out of place and I wish we got to seem more crowns/circlets but I get it since they like to save them for their epic moments of crowning. Since they keep young Rhaenyra's hair sooo simple I wanted to add some pizazz. Also had to dress her in Arryn blue at least once in something other than a nightgown, fitting for an episode where she misses her mother.

Alicent’s dress stood out a bit too much because of the contrast of the black and red, it’s also so dissimilar to anything else she wears. I’d like to think this is Alicent trying to fit the appearance of a Targ queen since she’s just been wearing red lately. She’s taken the V neckline from Rhaenys and added the flowy sleeves she remembers from Aemma and her mother. Also gave her a tiny crown-like headpiece. Rhaenyra’s dress is iffy I based it off her red one she wears with Laenor but I was too lazy to add more details. Added a cute little circlet. The dress she wears this scene looks so washed out but it could’ve worked out if it was a different color way/pattern or perhaps if they were more consistent with the style especially since she’s supposed to be hunting for a husband now.

Laena’s dresses all look so awkward on the actresses but ofc who knows how much time the costume department had. The fit of this dress was just a bit awkward around the bust so I just raised the neckline and made it more similar to the other dresses.

The Green Dress WIP

So I wanted to try sewing Alicent’s dress from season 1 and here’s my work in progress! I’m pretty happy with how’s it going, I still need to make the inner sleeves and add the gold flower details and maybe I’ll do an Alicent cosplay photoshoot 🤗💚

While probably not deliberate by the costume designers, I do love how some of the aspects of Aemma Arryn’s pink dress design ended up Alicent’s wardrobe.
