The endings of horror movies typically don't provide a definite resolution of the plot, completely eliminating the cause of the horror, if only to leave things open for a sequel. Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cure is no exception: The ending is a kind of blink-and-you'll-miss-it, except that even if you don't blink it's still enigmatic. That's not because Kurosawa has a sequel in mind, but that he wants you to stay as unsettled as you've been throughout the movie. The title is ironic: There's no cure for the "disease" the film has shown us because the dark drives that afflict the characters and the motiveless crimes they commit may be endemic, part of the nature of being human, submerged until something triggers them. Kenichi Takabe (Koji Yakusho) is a police detective in charge of investigating a series of strange murders in which ordinary, even respected people -- a teacher, a doctor, a policeman -- kill people and leave an X slashed across their chests. In some cases, the victim is close to the killer and in others they're random. Eventually, Takabe discovers that the one link between the killers is that they all came in contact with a very eccentric young man who at first claims to be suffering from amnesia. Takabe discovers that his name is Kunio Mamiya (Masato Hagiwara), and that he's a former student of psychology with a special interest in the 18th century physician Franz Mesmer, a controversial figure in the use of hypnotism to treat patients. Is Mamiya, whose manner is infuriatingly passive-aggressive, responsible for the psychotic breaks of the unlikely killers? It's a conventional horror-movie plot treated in a brilliantly unconventional way by Kurosawa, who perhaps in his own way hypnotizes the viewer into a persistent sense of dread. The performances by Yakusho and Hagiwara are terrific.

Do you see Hotaru having an interest in Shakespeare & being a bit of a theater nerd?

Not really. She'd be much too shy to want to pursue theatre herself, and I think Hotaru appreciates reading more for exploration of amazing stories than for the beauty of the prose. However, I did write Setsuna as having an interest in MacBeth and Akira Kurosawa's adaptations of Shakespeare plays.

Todoroki's Class

Before the first day, Shouto looks at his list of students and doesn't think it'll be a problem. And then he gets there. There are twenty students in total. Here they are:

Deputy Representative/Vice Class President, Megumi Fujioka. Quirk: Charm. Megumi has the ability to charm a person with a simple wink. They become infatuated with her, usually obeying her every command and not harming a hair on her head. The effect ends within five minutes, or until she blows a kiss in their direction. She must have eye contact for her power to work. It will not work if she or the other person are wearing glasses.

Shinya Hamasaki. Quirk: Earth Mover. Shinya has the power to control the rock beneath his feet. He can also use it to sense where people around him are. However, must be on the solid ground to use his Quirk.

Hotaru Hashimoto. Quirk: Light 'Em Up. Hotaru has the ability to create powerful beams of light from the palms of her hands. She cannot shut her Quirk off, so she has to wear thick gloves at all times.

Sayuri Inoue. Quirk: Spitball. Sayuri can manifest her saliva into an explosive force. When she spits it out, it becomes a fireball, causing an explosive reaction to whatever it hits.

Takashi Itou. Quirk: Plasma. Takashi can gather gases in the air around his hands and charge them into a highly vositile plasma-like substance. This can be used for offensive, defensive or stealth attacks.

Mariko Mori. Quirk: Magnetic Field. Mariko can generate a Magnetic field around parts of her body, essentially making her a magnet.

Tsubaki Kobayashi. Quirk: Green Thumb. Tsubaki can manipulate any plant in the area. She is often able to restore life to a plant, however, this also uses up her own energy.

Hachiro Koizumi, Times Eight. Hachiro can duplicate himself up to seven times, making about seven copies of himself -- eight Hachiros in total. The damage the clones can take is relatively small. They can only take a few hits before disappearing. One strong hit can cause them to disintegrate, too.

Hiroshi Kurosawa, Shadow Durability. Hiroshi's skin can absorb shadows, allowing him to coat his skin and make it nearly indestructible. His shadow's durability is only up to a certain point. Also, light can dissolve his armor.

Shichirou Matsuoka, Shark Bait. He can basically do anything a shark can. He cannot breathe air, but instead has to have a filter over his gills so he can breathe. His skin also dries out really quickly.

Miho Minami, Wordsmith: With the words Miho writes on her body, she can use the ink on her flesh to create the object. The bigger the letters, the bigger the object. She can't make living things.

Class Representative/President Haru Nakajima, Static Shock. Using the electricity in the air and friction, Haru can channel any source of static electricity and make it his own.

Michiko Oshiro, Snapshot. Using her camera like eyes, Michiko can snap a photo of anything. This image will allow her to gain information on the subjects of the photograph. The photo will replicate out of a slot in her chest if she so wishes.

Yuki Saeki, First Aid. Yuki can heal minor wounds, as well as accelerate the body's natural healing rate for major injuries.

Sora Tachibana, Wheels. She has wheels in her feet that allow her to move with fluid grace and speed.

Akira Takahashi, Technomancy. Akira's quirk allows him to manipulate technology to his whim as long as he has his hands on it.

Kiku Ueda, Detach. Kiku can detach parts of her body from her torso. Her limbs do not grow back. She has to reattach them herself. It's a pain in the ass when you can't find one of your body parts.

Chihiro Watanabe, Passing Through. Chihiro can turn her body into a shadow, allowing it to move across and under surfaces. She can't go through matter.

Minato Yamaguchi, Reality Warp. Minato can warp the mind of his targets, making them see things that aren't even there. He can only use his quirk on one person at a time.

Kazuo Yoshida, Gas Tank. Kazuo can build up a variety of gases in his body, mixing them up and secreting them out through his mouth like a valve. He cannot turn this ability off, however, and usually keeps his mouth shut if building up an attack. He cannot take in poisonous gases, it will kill him.

Shouto groans as he surveys this group of teenagers before him, none of them having noticed him even walk in the room yet.

This is going to be a long year.

PERSONALIDADE Otimismo é de longe a maior virtude de Harumi, com riso solto e piadas horríveis é impossível não ser contagiado pela energia positiva da garota! Diferente da pessoa esnobe que poderia ser por ter nascido em berço de ouro, possui uma facilidade tremenda para fazer amizades e não liga para quantos dígitos tem em sua conta bancária, sendo comum vê-la rodeada por seus amigos que afirmam que a garota é dona de um sorriso quase inabalável – quase, por trás do ar otimista se mostra um tanto sensível e solitária. Bem diferente da Harumi de anos atrás que só sabia chorar e fugir das pessoas como a bela covarde que era, a vida se encarregou de lhe ensinar como esconder suas fraquezas do mundo. Entretanto quando contrariada, se mostra bastante briguenta e rancorosa quando pisam em algum de seus calos, sendo esses os únicos momentos em que a japonesa abandona o tom divertido e descontraído.

PASSADO Nascida em Fukuoka, aos 3 anos de idade se mudou para Tsushima quando seus pais tiveram que tomar à frente nos negócios deixados por seu avô materno, sua mãe havia herdado parte do Hotaru no Yu Hot Spring & Hotel. Sua história tinha tudo para ser “perfeita", digna de qualquer protagonista tinha uma vida confortável com tudo o que quisesse e pais até então apaixonados como se ainda fossem os mesmos jovens colegiais de anos atrás. A quebra desse ciclo feliz veio com um acidente de carro que acabou tirando a vida de sua mãe e com ela, levou a paz e harmonia na casa dos Kurosawa. Harumi com apenas 5 anos na época acabou sendo deixada de lado pelo pai quando mais precisava de seu amor e afeto, ficando aos cuidados de sua babá, Chiyo, que passou a ser a pessoa mais querida para si e quem lhe ensinou a como se virar sozinha. Com o distanciamento cada vez maior entre pai e filha, não foi surpresa nenhuma quando a garota passou a preferir ficar na casa de sua babá do que na própria e até mesmo passar dias ali sem que o pai sequer percebesse sua ausência – estava ocupado demais se afundando no sentimento de culpa. Com o tempo livre acabou despertando gosto pelo desenho, mais especificamente criação de roupas, e não demorou até que enxergasse no seu hobby o futuro que queria para sua vida.

PRESENTE Harumi deu início na sua vida acadêmica na Bunka Fashion College e atualmente está no segundo ano de sua graduação design de moda, algo que não foi bem visto por seu pai e resultou em mais uma discussão, mas por ordens do mesmo acabou retornando à Tsushima para resolverem seu futuro e tem se desdobrado para acompanhar suas aulas ainda que à distância. Com as lições de costura que teve com sua Oba-chan, as roupas que cria estão mais apresentáveis e algumas peças estão disponíveis para venda em sua loja online, sendo motivo de orgulho para a futura estilista. E quando não está estudando, costurando ou caminhando pelas praias da ilha, faz questão de ir até chitose ajudar Chiyo em sua loja de doces durante o dia, uma desculpa conveniente para ficar longe do ambiente familiar e das cobranças de seu pai acerca dos planos traçados para si, em especial a condição absurda imposta por ele ao querer obrigá-la a se casar com o filho de seu sócio para que tenha direito à herdar parte do hotel que um dia pertenceu à sua mãe. Mas é durante a noite que Harumi extravasa toda sua frustração e pressão gerada pelas expectativas que seu sobrenome carrega ao frequentar os bares da ilha e até mesmo o karaokê onde os gritos são mais frequentes que o canto.

FUTURO Ainda que adore a calmaria que Tsushima lhe oferece, tem o anseio de voltar para seu país natal em busca de maiores oportunidades e experiência na profissão que pretende seguir – não seria um “Adeus’ definitivo, claro, mas sente que a ilha não tem muito o que lhe oferecer nessa questão. Em relação ao hotel, espera encontrar uma forma menos absurda e que de preferência não envolva casamento forçado para dar continuidade ao trabalho de seu avô, quem sabe não consegue um acordo com seu pai e o seu “noivo”? Sua principal preocupação nisso tudo é alcançar equilíbrio entre seu sonho e o dever. Quanto à relação com seu pai, acredita que seja um caso perdido e que mesmo nutrindo uma fagulha de esperança de se aproximar não irá conseguir êxito pela muralha erguida entre os dois.
