Part 2

Momiji, Kyo, and the things they each do for love (part 2 of 5)

So, the next time we see Momiji appear with Kyo, we get nearly an entire episode of them together! And it's a hugely significant episode in setting up the way Momiji impact's Kyo's character arc.

Momiji walks home with Tohru after her job. Kyo reacts with his usual annoyance, giving Momiji a noogie. (I love that this is Kyo's go-to whenever Momiji shows up. It's adorable.)

Momiji then announces he's taking Tohru to a Sohma-owned onsen for White Day, but Tohru doesn't seem happy.

Tohru: A hot spring is so expensive... and I'd be going without Mom! Shigure: Whoah, Tohru-kun. It's just a hot spring, okay? It's not Paris or anything! Tohru: B-but... Momiji: He's right! And if you're happy, your Mutti will be happy for you! Or... do you not want to...? Tohru: I do. I'm happy. Momiji: Yuki and Kyo will come, too! Kyo: Where do you get off just deciding that, you brat? Momiji: Aw, don't say that! Let's go! What about you, Yuki? Are you against it, too? Yuki: I'll go. Why not? Momiji: Yuki says he's coming! Kyo: That makes me want to go even less!

Here, Momiji is manipulating Tohru into going with him. When Momiji asks her, "Or... do you not want to...?" we fill in the end of the sentence for him, assuming he's saying, "Do you not want to go?"

But what Tohru hears is "Do you not want to make your mom happy?"

We know not to trust Tohru when she tells us she's happy; we know she's hiding so much pain behind her constant smile. She's even crying when she tells Momiji she's happy. (And I'm sure Kyo feels horribly guilty here when she mentions her mother.)

Momiji may be manipulative, but he's still kind. Wanting to see Tohru smile, he announces that Yuki and Kyo will come, too, to try and make her happy, but Kyo pushes back.

There is so much richness in this single conversation, but what I love most is how it encapsulates the differences between what Kyo and Momiji value most, both for themselves and in their relationship to Tohru.

Momiji uses pleasure to distract from his own pain. In his view, having as much fun as possible is the secret to life, and pain is to be avoided at all costs. When it comes to Tohru, Momiji wants to spend as much time with her as possible and make as many happy memories together as they can. He wants her to smile, even if he has to manipulate people (including Tohru) for it to happen.

Kyo, on the other hand, cherishes agency. He knows he faces a future behind bars, so of course he bristles when other people try to make decisions for him (including relatively innocuous ones, like Momiji saying he'll come to the hot spring). Kyo still believes Tohru needs to be protected (especially from him), so his approach is generally to give her space and scold her when he thinks she's not being cautious enough. He's also extremely aware of the pain Tohru feels over the death of her mother, even if he's suppressing that. Anything that could bring that pain into sharper relief is a huge red flag for him. He wants her to be safe, even if that means he can't enjoy her company.

It's at this point that Shigure mentions Tohru is a month behind on her payments toward her school trip. (Also, look how Momiji is still hugging Kyo! So cute!)

When everyone (except Momiji) figures out it was because of the Valentine's Day chocolates, Kyo barely stops himself from flying into a rage, telling Tohru to go take a bath, now.

She leaves, and when Yuki asks why they didn't catch on, Kyo snaps that it's because she hides her feelings with a smile.

This shows us how well Kyo already understands Tohru. I also suspect his anger is not really at Tohru, but at himself for failing to protect her.

Next, Kyo starts venting about how stupid she is, how she'll end up deep in the hole one day, etc... which is when Momiji calmly speaks up and tells them about a book one of his classmates brought in to school, and we're treated to one of the most memorable sequences in the whole series: The Foolish Traveler.

Momiji's choice to tell that particular story in response to Kyo's complaints shows just how well he understands both Tohru and Kyo, and that his own cheerfulness is a conscious choice. We see that he's someone who believes looking past loss and seeing the good in a situation is a virtue, and he admires the foolish traveler (and Tohru) for it.

I really love the way this sequence was drawn. As Momiji is telling the story, Kyo and Yuki are shown with their eyes obscured, so Momiji's are the only eyes we see, except when he's taking time to reflect on how he interprets the story.

Everyone in class laughed. They called it a dumb story. But I closed my eyes and thought about it. I thought about the traveler who was swindled out of everything but her head, and still cried and said, "Thank you." And what I decided was... what a lovely person. It's a waste of time to think about loss or life getting harder. The traveler never thought about that stuff. Even if other people think that makes her an idiot, I just don't. That's all. Even if other people think it's worth tricking her, I just won't. I'll just want to make her happy for real. Yuki, Kyo, what about you? Do you think she was an idiot after all? What do you think when you close your eyes?

It's telling that the very next scene is Kyo agreeing to go to the onsen with Tohru after all. (This is honestly one of my favorite Kyoru moments and I think of it as the first sheet scene.)

Kyo tries to give himself an out, ("Though maybe you're fine with me not going...") but Tohru is ecstatic. Look how happy she is! And when she smiles and tears up, it's genuine this time.

Kyo naturally melts into a puddle of goo at Tohru's reaction (is this the first time we get the shojo bubbles with them?), and Momiji's the one to call him out on it, loudly pointing out Kyo's "heart eyes" to everyone. This is now the second time Momiji has verbalized Kyo's feelings for Tohru- and I believe he's the only character to have done so at all by this point. (Also, peep Momiji still hugging Kyo after Yuki wakes up! Cuuuuute!)

They arrive at the onsen, and Okami (Ritsu's mother, the proprietress) shows them their rooms.

Kyo: So this means I've gotta share a room with damn Yuki? Okami: I see you two still don't get along. I'll put up screens to partition the room. Please rest easy. Kyo: That's not the issue! Why do I even have to be here with him at- Momiji: I bet you're just saying that 'cause you wanna sleep in Tohru's room! Kyo: Huh!?

Momiji knows exactly how to press Kyo's buttons. But, more importantly, he's stopping Kyo from saying something he'd regret, something that might hurt Tohru's feelings.

After Okami loses her shit at Kyo, Momiji asks to bathe with Tohru, and Kyo immediately tells him off. After Yuki successfully scolds Momiji, he asks to share a room with Tohru, thereby doing exactly the thing he was teasing Kyo about just moments earlier.

I think, to Momiji, wanting to spend as much time as possible with Tohru is just the most obvious thing in the world, so naturally, it must be what Kyo wants, too!

After the baths, when Kyo is about to destroy the ping pong table after failing to score against Yuki, Tohru asks him to battle (probably to defuse the tension between them). Momiji encourages Kyo to play, and right after he does, we cut to Kyo playing with Tohru.

I think this is a small example of how Momiji gets Kyo to spend more time with Tohru. The onsen trip itself is a bigger example, of course, but even little things like encouraging Kyo to play ping pong with her help push them together.

Kyo and Momiji start playing each other while Tohru leaves to check on Yuki, and just look how happy they are! Cuuute!

I also love the chaos of this ending. Okami is using Kyo as a crutch. He complains, but doesn't stop her from doing so. Tohru asks Momiji if he'll be starting middle school and is shocked to learn he's only a year younger than them. Kyo is grouchy when Momiji reveals he and Haru will both be coming to Kaibara, but Kyo softens pretty much immediately, merely expressing surprise that Haru was allowed in with his unique hair.

Kyo almost seems to express affection - to both Momiji AND Tohru - by acting irritated on the surface. (What's extra cute is that Hajime kind of does this, too, always seeming somewhat exasperated at Mutsuki despite the fact that they're obviously in love.)

Anyway, this is among my very favorite episodes of Fruits Basket, and I hope you enjoyed reading this!

[Bitter Sweet Sixteen] 002-A26 - All Grown-ups were Once—*

Momiji: Phew… that was refreshing. Feels like it's been forever since I could take a relaxing soak in the bath.

(I've been so on edge over the kids this past while… I did pretty well for a job I'm not used to, if I do say so myself.)

And that's why—I think I ought to reward myself a little bit!

Udon snacks and olive oil mochi! Wasanbon sweets! And of course, local alcohol!

Momiji: S-so good…!

The refreshing olive oil aroma hits your nose first, and a savoury aroma follows it! The flavour is satisfying, but not heavy at all!

Coupled with a scent that stimulates the appetite, you can't help but reach for the next…!

(This time yesterday we were still at Shodoshima, making a ruckus. Feels like a week has passed since then already…)

…It sure is quiet.

Sakujiro: You appear to be basking in the afterglow of Shodoshima.

Momiji: Sa-Sakujiro-san. Sorry, I was talking pretty loudly to myself…!

Sakujiro: Not at all. I simply came to grab a drink while taking a break from work.

Momiji: …Ah. Right, the report cards for those five—how did they go?

Sakujiro: I am currently right in the middle of grading them.

Momiji: (Their score will determine whether or not they can become Ward Mayors…)

(They're at the very bottom of the school caste system, five problem children…)

I'm getting kinda nervous, after all this time.

Sakujiro: Though it seems the ones in question have completely forgotten about it.

Momiji: Ahaha, you've got that right— …

Sakujiro: Whatever is the matter?

Momiji: Ah, well… it's just sinking in how happy it made me, that even though they were all uninterested and lacked motivation at first, in the end they really pushed forward and gave it their all.

Sakujiro: Indeed, they all had such wonderful spirits.

Momiji: …Personally, I've felt this since high school, but when it comes to looking before you leap, or rather… with the disagreements and failures that may happen as you get older—

How do you come to terms with those when they actually stand in your way…?

Watching them made me realise that I may have grown accustomed to rationalising those situations.

Sakujiro: …Yes, that's certainly true.

I'm the type who could never find hopes and dreams as passionate as they have—

It certainly helped that I had my sunglasses on for the trip. Else I would have been blinded.

Momiji: Ahahaha! That's true!

Sakujiro: That goes for seeing you in front of me right now, too.

Momiji: What are you talking about? It's fine to spend your whole life searching for hopes and dreams.

I've seen plenty of older people smile and tell me they used to think travelling didn't suit them and was a pain, but as they got older, they came to love it.

Sakujiro: Oh my, that's splendid. I'm envious.

However, just as there are people who can eventually find them in the prime of their life, so too will there be those who can't.

Momiji: …

Sakujiro: ? Chief, this is…

Momiji: Here. It's the tastiest treat I have.

Sakujiro: … Thank you very much. I shall accept this, along with your feelings.

Momiji: And—if they manage to become Tourism Ward Mayors, it might spark a revolution in the school caste system, so please remember that I gave you this, and…!

Sakujiro: No can do. Even with a bribe, I shall grade them without bias.

Momiji: Kh…!

Kafka: …And so, we've been looking for companions to liven Hama up together with. I would be very happy if you could be that for us.

Momiji: (I haven't heard that yet myself…)

Kafka: When my mother was alive, she was close with the Principal's "relatives". The motivation was getting advice from an educator's perspective on what kind of people would be good choices for Ward Mayors.

Kafka: The idea of choosing students who have room to grow was agreeable to me. I'm quite the fan of the potential that dwells within imperfection.

Fuji Hakone — Day 3 and 4

Okay, travelling is very exhausting and I didn’t manage to write down everything I wanted. But here I am, sharing some impressions of the National Park Fuji Hakone.

Fuji Hakone is actually quite huge. Last year we made a trip to Fujikawakuchiko, which I can also highly recommend and which is probably the most famous when you see pictures with Mount Fuji view.

This year we spent two nights near lake Ashi. I won’t speak about the absolutely horrible journey (to make it short: not noticing that we could have taken a train and instead chose a bus and a steep way over about 150 steps with all of our luggage was not the best decision). We stayed in a small guesthouse and the guys there were delighted I learn Japanese and could speak with them at least a bit. Our room was not, like expected, traditional Japanese with tatami mats. But nevertheless very cute. There were two Onsen in the basement and let me tell you, now I know why people in Black Clover like to take a bath so much! It’s so relaxing.

The first day we took the rope way up to a height of 1,044 metres. Eggs boiled in volcano steam were sold there and the smell of sulphur was almost too much. But at least they are prepared in case the Fuji gets angry and tell you to run into a building to be safe (to be honest, I don’t think you’re actually safe there, but at least they try 😂).

For the night I was wearing a yukata, and with this I want to share a quote from chapter 18 of “Embrace of Darkness”.

More. More. He wanted even more, although he knew that he should stop this right here and now. But he just couldn’t. Instead he made it even worse by grabbing her hips and lifting her up, just to press her down on the mattress and roll over her, his lips never leaving hers. They were a bundle of tangled limbs and searching hands. Her legs were captured in the fabric of her robe and they both tugged impatiently at it to get her free so he could take his place between her legs where he belonged for so long already. Finally his hands brushed over the naked skin of her thighs and her legs wrapped around him.

I can now say from experience: Sleeping in a yukata is not as comfortable as I imagined. Making Nacht and Ichika struggle like this is definitely understandable. My legs were always caught in the fabric. 😅

The second day we had enough time to go to lake Ashi. It’s a very nice place with beautiful nature that already gave me inspiration for the upcoming chapters of “Embrace of Brightness”.

Here another fitting quote from chapter 18 of “Embrace of Darkness”:

He really liked the idea of that. “Not yet. But I’ve thought about the best time to go. Spring is almost over so we missed the cherry blossoms and summer in Hino was always so hot with high humidity, it’s no fun to stay outside for long then. But autumn is very beautiful. I think you’ll like to see the momiji season. That time of the year the leaves will turn bright red and there are special illuminations and several festivals.” He got excited just by thinking about it and to spend time with Charlotte and Ichika in Hino.

As it’s still quite warm in Japan, the red leaves are still quite rare, but it’s now slowly starting and makes me very excited.

The shrine we visited here after making a trip with that boat is famous for tourists. That’s why we waited for over an hour to stand in front of this torii so we could take photos. I’m a huge fan of torii, they have made a huge impression on me, that’s why I now have a tattoo of one on my wrist.

In the afternoon we were also lucky the sky cleared up so we had a nice view of Fuji san. the chance to see it that day was only 40 %, so we were absolutely thrilled to have such a nice view. It’s very impressive, but also a bit sad that there was no snow at the peak.

In total, this stop was a beautiful impression of Japan’s nature. ❤️

Fruits Basket's final thoughts

I finished the anime a few weeks ago, and after my previous posts on the matter I thougt I'd make a final one. Please note that I haven't read the manga, so it's not impossible that some of my objections could boil down to being an anime-only.

Good for Akito for her heel-face turn I guess, but I'm team Rin here. She's done too much shit to be forgiven.

At least she ends up with Shigure. They deserve each other. Funny how quick the dog went from hot to not in my book.

As much as I can't stand Ayame, I really loved how the first thing he does when he feels the curse breaking is go to Mine and confess her his love. That was wholesome af, and I appreciate that he didn't seem to feel the same level of loss over it than the rest of the zodiac. (funnily enough, he was my husband's fave)

I loved the Yuki/Maki resolution, how he manned up and kissed her right there on the train station square.

However, I was a bit disappointed with the conclusion (or lack thereof) of Momiji's arc. The hinting that he too had romantic feelings for Tohru seemed to come out of nowhere and adds nothing in terms of plot or stakes. Also he kind of fades into the background after his curse breaks. I was really, really hoping (expecting, even) for resolution with his sister.

The backstory of Kyo with Tohru’s mum… pfff Iet’s say I accept it bc of the genre, but it felt farfetched af, her fatidic last words contrived and shoehorned for the sake of drama (There was more than enough grounds for Kyo’s guilt about not helping her without that addition IMO). Hatsuharu pulled back and gave to a tight lip smile, “you’re too nice for your own good” he held your face, “if me talking to Rin bothers you that much, stop setting up phone calls” Hatsuharu hummed and you shook your head, “look, I might be possessive and easily jealous, but I’m also extremely prideful and won’t let others know how much their actions affect me.” Your hands rested on his chest, before you leant in and kissed him, you looked at him with a soft smile. “I’m going to run a bath, join me when you’re done on the phone” you stood and held out your hands to Haru, he took them and stood as well, “okay, I’ll be quick” he walked past you to grab his phone.

You set the water temperature before sitting on the wooden stool next to the overly large tub, after scrubbing off your body and rinsing off any soap, you stepped into the tub and felt the hot water slightly sting your skin, this was because you had made the water hotter then usual, Hatsuharu was going to take a little time before coming to bathe and you still wanted it to be hot for him when he got there. You sat in the water with your legs pressed to your chest as you hug them and rested your head on your knees, your chin and lips were submerged and you anxiously sat there blowing bubbles just like a young child would as you waited for your boyfriend to join you.

“How cute… the water looks nice” Hatsuharu smiled while he stripped himself of all his clothes and jewellery, placing his clothes in a basket and his jewellery in a little tray on top of the towel cupboard. Hatsuharu walked over to the stool and started scrubbing himself, before rinsing all the soap off, while doing all this you watched his every movement intensely, “do you enjoy admiring my body that much, you’d stare so intently?” Haru questions with a smile as he stepped into the hot water and hummed, “it’s still hot” he smiled as he sat across from you and leaned back on the tub with his arms resting on the edge. Hatsuharu smiled at you and you could only blush and turn around facing the other way, you heard Haru chuckle and felt the water ripple as his hands rested on his shoulders, “why are you acting so shy?” He hummed and pressed his face against your ear, “let’s kiss… I want you to be with me” Haru whispered in your ear, you looked back at the white and black haired man. Hatsuharu had a slight smirk on his face as he leant in and lightly kissed your lips, before he sat back into his original spot, you turned your whole body towards him and leant into him before rested your hands on his chest as he wrapped his arms around your waist. You giggled as he pinched your hips and you lifted your butt, before wiggling it, “teasing me, huh?” Hatsuharu hummed before lightly smacked a hand down onto your ass and rubbed over the spot he smacked. Hatsuharu brought his hand down to your aching cunt, your moan echoed against the bathroom walls as his rough finger rubbed soft circles onto your clit, before he trailed his finger up to your wet entrance, Haru slipped his finger into you and immediately found your g-spot before he began to gently rub it with his finger tip. The “revitalising” comes afterwards. Endorphins come out when you’re sitting down and feeling the air. In other words, you’re then in a state of happiness.

Netaro: I read that in a book! The brain is still awake while the body is relaxed! It makes all the happy hormones in your brain come oozing out and it feels nice, right!?

Nagi: That sounds kind of scary.

Daniel: Well, there’s no need to frantically aim for that. I think sitting in the sauna counts as “revitalising”.

Netaro: It’s sooo hot… need water…

Nagi: Yeah, me too.

Daniel: You know what? I think humans think way too much. That’s why they choose to be in these extreme situations and let their minds go blank.

It’s like turning off your thinking switch…

Nagi: …*Breathes in, breathes out…*

Daniel: People’s problems usually lie either in the past or the future, right? You don’t exist in any of ‘em. There’s nothing you can do about it, so you end up in an endless loop of worry.

Sitting in a sauna is the best thing you can do to escape from that loop.

If you just ignore the fact that it’s hot and think about something else, then your mind will feel less burdened. It’s just like detox…

Nagi: Hey, how much longer…? 1 more minute?

Netaro: Huff, huff… W–Water… too hot…

Daniel: In that sense, it’s similar to meditation or mindfulness… Hey, are you guys listenin’ to me?

Momiji: Phew! We managed to get a ton of stuff for making mini wreaths!

Nagi: Yeah. There were so many different colors and types for every little decoration, I couldn’t help but grab everything when I thought about what flowers would go with each of them.

Momiji: I can see that a lot of thought goes into making these! But thanks to you, I think we managed to put together a really good haul.

Momiji: I mean, I never would’ve come up with the idea to make mini wreaths using dry flowers myself!

Nagi: It’s nothing special… But, I’m glad I could help you pick something your family would like.

Nagi: We still need to get some ribbons, but how about we take a breather over at that bench first?

Momiji: You’re right.

Momiji: Phew… It’s starting to get pretty cold, huh? At this rate, we’re probably gonna have a white Christmas.

Nagi: True. It’s cold enough that maybe even Santa Claus would have to come down to earth to warm up too.

Nagi: …Chief, I’ll be right back.

Nagi: Call it a Christmas miracle, but I managed to keep the drinks safe and sound. They’re still warm too.

Momiji: Aw… Thank you so much. Then I’ll go for the cocoa.

Nagi: Great choice. This cocoa comes with a nice helping of marshmallows. It looks sweet and delicious.

Momiji: Wow, it really looks good! Mm~ It does smell pretty sweet! This really hits the spot!

Child who likes sweets: Mama! The cocoa that lady has looks really tasty! I want some too!

Nagi: Amazing. We managed to spread the gospel of cocoa. I’m sure sharing a nice cup of hot cocoa with her family will turn into a precious memory for her.

Momiji: Ahaha, true. A lot of families tend to go Christmas shopping together around this time.

Nagi: Chief… 

Momiji: Hm?

Nagi: Do you get along with your family too? Though, seeing you pick your presents with such care is probably proof that you do.

Momiji: (Nagi-kun…)

Nagi: …I was wondering what your family is like. We bought a lot of materials, but I couldn’t help but wonder what kind of wreaths would suit them.

Momiji: Let’s see… When I think of them, I mostly remember smiles. I’d say they’re a pretty cheerful bunch.

Momiji: I actually have a brother who’s not much older than me.

Momiji: He seems like he’s got it all together, but he’s actually pretty dense. He’s a bit of an airhead too, so I can’t really take my eyes off him for long.

Nagi: I see… Yeah, that does sound like someone related to you.

Nagi: Oh, um, I don’t mean anything bad by it. I meant more of the cheerful part, less of the airheaded— 

Momiji: Ahaha! It’s alright, don’t worry… I think you’d get along with my family.

Momiji: I’d love to introduce you to them one day. Especially my brother, I think he’d take a liking to you. 

Nagi: Meeting your family… 

Nagi: …… 

Momiji: Nagi-kun?

Nagi: …Sorry, I just tried imagining it. Somehow, I feel all warm just thinking about it.

Tried my hand at this. Some notes:

Kyo is obviously the fan favorite and there is no flexibility on this.

"Made to be hated" could be a lot of people (Akito, Ren, the Sohma maid, Rin's parents, Yuki's mother, Tohru's relatives, Momiji's parents, I'm SURE I'm missing some others...)

The hot one could also be a lot of people, but I felt Shigure and Rin were the best fits. Went for Shigure because he's more my type (physically, his personality is a whole other issue lol)

Hatori isn't exactly a "normal" person (in addition to the curse and his severe depression/emotional repression, he takes Mayu extremely literally), but his role in his friend group is that of the straight man (in more ways than one lolol)

Ritsu post-haircut. Our boy didn't get enough screen time as it is, and then YOU CHOPPED OFF HIS BEAUTIFUL HAIR?!?!?!?! 😠

Akito is gremlin. (I'm not even the first person to say this!) (tho I think Machi is a bit of a gremlin, too) (and Kakeru, but that's in a totally different way)

Haru "if my hair was black, it wouldn't stop me from kickin' your ass" Sohma has THOUGHTS about society

the maids are the real villains (although they're also probably suuuper marginalized so nvm...) (definitely considered many of the parents for this, too)
