Combination of watching Dungeon Meshi and not having had a kitchen for over three (3) months means that I am physically dying to cook for my friends right now. Once I can make delicious food again. Then you will see.

In my last relationship, there was a vastly unequal distribution of household labor, physical and mental. In short, I somehow became his mom. To avoid repeating this pattern I've been instructed by the girl council to tell men I don't cook or clean.

So, this is how I ended up looking a boy dead in the eye on our first date and saying, "Oh, I don't cook," even though I actually cook/bake really well.

Technically, "don't cook" and "can't cook" are not the same thing, so is that really lying? 🤷‍♀️

Hannibal really is the ultimate comfort character, though. People get weirded out when I tell them, but once you get past the whole manipulation, serial murder, and cannibalism thing... No really I mean it, just look past all that for a sec and watch him.

Seeing him go about his day feels like taking a Xanax. I've never seen a character who's just so fucking competent before. Everything he does turns out perfect. And he makes it look so easy. He's so calm and collected and content and in control all the time. Well, most of the time - but even those rare times when things aren't going his way, he's amused and excited, ready to take on the challenge. There's literally a YouTube video called Hannibal cooking ASMR because even just watching him cook feels so calming. He's almost supernaturally graceful and competent about it.

You just keep watching, enthralled, and hoping some of that unshakable confidence and prowess will rub off on you through osmosis. It won't, of course - but just for a few minutes or hours, you get to lose yourself in the fantasy that you, too, could host haute cuisine dinner parties on a weekly basis, become an expert on Italian literature, and beat the national record for owning the most handmade suits, all while holding down a full-time job.

awwww thank you dude!! i'm very aware that a 3000 word meta post is like... a lot more information/opinion than most people are down to read unless they're already super invested, but i am nothing if not dedicated to cooking food for myself at every opportunity. so it's very nice to hear that it was tasty for some of my tumblr dinner guests as well. :)
