OUR WIVES UNDER THE SEA, Julia Armfield
To know the ocean, I have always felt, is to recognize the teeth it keeps half-hidden.

I recently finished the novella Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke by Eric LaRocca (I still haven't read the other two stories in the collection, but I'm going to), and I have Some Thoughts
But before I get into those thoughts, CW for homophobia, gender dysphoria, codependency, mental illness, emotional abuse, body horror, and general gross stuff. Also, major spoilers.
The more I think about this story, the more new layers I start to notice. It's one that I've had to take my time to digest and process. I also think LaRocca intentionally leaves a lot of things vague to allow readers to project their own experiences onto Agnes, so what I'm about to say definitely says just as much about me as it does about the story.
When I first finished THGWSWLS, I described it to my boyfriend as "gender dysphoria as body horror." To me, Agnes's story was one of desperately wanting to conform to societal expectations for women and the female body. It was a story of becoming increasingly frustrated as doors shut and possibilities slip through your fingers. It was a story of being deeply, fundamentally at odds with your own body. A story about destroying yourself trying to achieve some semblance of the body you're "supposed" to have.
But then I started thinking about the whole parasite thing as a metaphor for how queer people think loving something or someone will fix us. I started thinking of all the queer people I know who seem to think becoming parents will fix their own wounded inner child. I started thinking of how someone once told me the reason she wanted to get pregnant was because only her own child could love her unconditionally. I started thinking about hurt, exhausted people desperately wanting something to care for, only for that thing to become a burden they don't have the strength to carry.
And of course, "parasite" has a double meaning in THGWSWLS. The tapeworm is a parasite that is feeding on Agnes, but so is Zoe. This is a story that explores relationship as violence. Zoe inserts herself into Agnes's life and causes her pain on purpose. We have to assume Zoe is getting something out of this arrangement. Is it gratification? A sense of control? Just the thrill of seeing how far this sick, desperate woman will go? Whatever it is, it comes at the expense of Agnes's health and safety, and Zoe clearly knows this.
I could go on -- I could talk about Internet dating and how it can facilitate abuse, I could talk about codependency, I could talk about class dynamics and the abuse of power... This story has just given me so much to ponder, and I love that.
