Gah, I repeat a repeated frustration that there are no good clips online of Data taking his child to the holodeck to select a visual identity (species and gender) from the ST:TNG S3E16 episode “The Offspring.”

When this montage opens in the holodeck, Data is waking up Deanna after Lal has sorted through the options he’d curated for them to example.

Reviewing the transcript, I’m surprised at how modern me, influenced by modern queer discourse, is highly uncomfortable with the episode explicitly calling Lal initially having a body that is neuter gender “inadequate,” and that her eventual physical identity must be carefully selected because it will be “[hers] for [her] lifetime.”

Definitely a case of “fair for it’s day” (especially the attempts to have a same sex couple used to represent romance, and being able to at least use gender neutral language to introduce the concept to Lal), but showing the limited experiences the well-intentioned writers and cast had with non-binary and fluid identities.

I definitely prefer Hordak’s Etherian-influenced approach to the topic of “Hello, here’s what to say to find me in a crowd.”

I am too lazy (and too embroiled in an art challenge for another fandom) to do the comic idea that came to my head, but if you have the time, inclination, are just bored and wanted to doodle, etc... I am imagining a scared / surprised Hordak looking at the butt-end of a No. 2 pencil that is trying to erase him. Entrapta holds the pencil back with her hair and yells at it. Could also be done with a pencil trying to erase Catra, who is in a battle-stance with her claws out, meanwhile, Adora is piercing the pencil eraser with her sword.

It cracks me up when people say they “hold [fictional character] accountable for their actions” they’re just a little make believe guy. How are you going to make them face consequences. Rub them out of existence with a pencil like in spongebob

"A what?" Entrapta tried to recall the details. "It's an ancient Etherian tradition Lance told me about. When want something to happen, you find a shooting star and you make a wish that it all works out how you want it to." "Hmm," Hordak replied, but he arranged himself so he was watching the sky. "And why are we not using the instruments calibrated specifically for this purpose?" "Because then we can't do this!" She settled against his side, making a nest for the two of them out of her hair.  "I see." Hordak tone was even, but Entrapta noticed the cute way his voice squeaked at the end.

It's a joke but it's not

I didn't have any of that, I get along with my mom fine

What I had was a dad who didn't want to have a fourth kid and had no idea what to do with a daughter that acted like a boy but loved girly things and was definitely neurodivergent as hell and had the fucking nerve to tell him that my teacher said he wasn't allowed to spank me with a paint stick but also tended to run into the street randomly

And when I tell you that I had a doodle of Filmation Hordak holding a "World's Worst Dad" mug as his picture in my contacts for years and Dad didn't even blink about it that should say all you really need to know tbh

Also something I'm never getting over because it's just so baffling

It so happens that my dad did not approve of my being an artist at all and wanted me to go into music if I went into a creative career at all
