Transfem Stan Thoughtdump

Okay so @/abyssalzones made a pretty good post that sums up a lot of my thoughts as well, but I have a few extra ones I'd like to add to this discussion, as well as elaborating on one of the post's points. I've been thinking about transfem Stan for a couple of weeks now and at this point I'm like "fuck it we ball" and throwing it out there. 

For one, it warms my heart whenever there's an older character who was raised in the mid-1900s/older times who realizes they're queer, or comes to terms with their identity in old age. You're never too old to realize you're part of the community, and never too late. Adding this on top of the many, MANY identities that Stan has had to take to survive in her life, it'd be like really turning over a new leaf for her. She'd get to really step into an identity that she aligns with completely, and not something else given to her or that she took to protect herself. 

Not to mention, everything regarding Ford. The fact that she had to pretend to be Ford for so long, she more than likely never had the chance to even think about taking on any other identities. She had to keep this one as intact as she could. Otherwise, she could risk loosing the Shack, and with it, the portal- her brother. No way that was happening. 

It was briefly touched in the post, but when Stan was watching that one movie and she was like "JUST LIKE ME FR", obviously the writers intended that to just be a joke since this was as far and away from Stan's identity as they could get. But we're gonna ignore that and take it at face value for a second. 

The channel introduces itself (jokingly) as the boring old lady black-and-white channel, clearly something that a manly-man like Stan wouldn't be into, and he reacts like how you'd expect. But once it gets going, he gets fully sucked into it, leading eventually to the scene where the main character, seemingly about to complete a Character Arc™, tells her mother "I'm not just a dutchess, I'm also a woman!" and Stan cheers for her, saying the "just like me fr" line. 

Without any transfem headcanons, again, this is a joke. Or you could interpret this in hindsight as Stan feeling a similar way about his father, since lines like "I'm a woman!" declared like that usually means "I'm free to make my own choices," which is a message resident make-my-father-proud-issues Stanley Pines would relate to pretty hard. Even though this isn't a conclusion Stan comes to in the show, we could easily see him coming to a conclusion like that in the future.

Now let's add the transfem headcanon back in. With that new layer to it, Stan (whose egg hasn't cracked yet) would be confused as to why she relates so hard. After all, she's a man who was raised to shove feelings down and be a manly-man man by Filbrick. She's more than likely gone her entire life trying to conform to that idea of toxic masculinity that her dad pushed on both her and Ford. Stan was always the one who resorted to punching, after all. That's a manly-man trait, so surely this goes no further right

There's a part of Gravity Falls that I feel doesn't get discussed enough, and that's the underlying misogyny of it. There's not a ton of it, but there are quite a few jokes about how men are stronger than women and the like. Stan has quite a few lines like that herself. So she would be subscribing to a similar mental state, the idea that if you like punching, CLEARLY you're a guy. Cuz that's how it works. Obviously. 

Introducing Mabel Pines, someone who is VERY much a girly-girl. She likes pink and unicorns and rainbows and makeup and sleepovers, stuff of the like. Now I could make a whole other post about my headcanons for Mabel and her queer journey, but one thing she can definitely do that "girly-girls" DON'T? Punching.

Mabel can punch. And she punches a lot. 

It's a small thing, and something I think Stan has just kinda accepted without question over the course of the series, but if she were to stop and think about it, she'd be like ".....wait a minute." and it could very well be the first piece that cracks the idea of manly-man masculinity vs just. existing as a person and what that actually means. 

Once Stan finally starts to break away from toxic masculinity and all those lessons she got thrown into her head, then her egg would finally be able to start cracking. 

As for why it even matters, first off, it just makes for an interesting interpretation of the character I haven't really seen before until VERY recently. Like, within the past 2 days recently (and maybe once like a month ago?? idk). 

But secondly, for her character, it would be a good, healthy step into really taking back her identity. Who IS Stan Pines? She's spent so long being other people, either as a form of self-defense or pretending to be her brother so she can help save him from the sideburn hell dimension, that I don't think she's really allowed herself to connect to who Stan is. 

This is true regardless of gender headcanon, but I think the transfem angle makes it so much more interesting. Who is Stan? Not even she knows. And she's starting to feel VERY confused about the whole thing. 

As for Ford, I think he'd be more than willing to support an identity journey for Stan. After all, he's traveled across dimensions and more than likely had all his teachings questioned as well. I am willing to bet money he's encountered trans people before. And, knowing Ford, he'd be open and curious to the idea, not close-minded, no matter what their father tried to teach his kids. Honestly, I could see Ford pestering Stan with questions long into the night regarding the whole thing, and taking up the whole identity mystery for himself as something the two of them can "crack" (heh) together. Just another adventure for the crew of the Stan'o'War II! 

There's SO much more but I don't wanna re-say things that the og post already said, these are just the big ones that stick out to me and what I wanted to elaborate on. 

TL;DR Stan goes on a journey of realizing that toxic masculinity Is Bad Actually and honestly so was his father, and once he accepts that and starts actively challenging his own beliefs about gender, her egg cracks and she realizes that maybe she isn't a guy at all. The rest of the Pines- but Ford especially- are supportive, and although Stan has a LOT of self-reflection to do and I could see her getting frustrated, flustered, or even embarrassed of her newfound realization, ultimately it makes her happier like this. Cuz it's her identity. She's not pretending to be anyone else anymore and she can just wholly be herself.

sanders sides: youtube series abt a gay dude working out his emotional problems via personified aspects of his personality. all the characters are gay cuz thas what thomas is baby! - i was hesitant abt putting this cuz thomas is a person not a character lol but if u haven't seen sasi i recommend it its like free therapy but theres songs sometimes

julie and the phantoms (netflix remake): musical show abt a teen girl rediscovering music after her mothers death w the help of three ghosts who were in a 90s band. canon gay character w a slow burn romance (not yet canon bfs but s2 lets go) - its very cheesy and the musical segments can drag on a bit but its p good overall

lucifer: detective show abt lucifer abandoning his rule of hell to buy a nightclub and beginning to solve murders w the lapd. lucifer is canonically bi/pan, as is his demon pal mazikeen, but queerness rly isnt a focus of the show its more casual rep - that being said its a good show overall, if a little predictable now n then (s1-3 on amazon prime, 4+5 on netflix)

kipo and the age of wonderbeasts: fantasy cartoon set in a future filled w mutant intelligent animals, kipo finds herself lost and has to get home w the help of her friends. canon gay character as one of the mains, canon nb side character - its a rly good cartoon! lots of fun, excellent soundtrack, and the main characters are all poc which is rly nice to see

the dragon prince: cartoon abt two princes and an elf assassin returning a dragon egg to its mother. canon mlm couple, several canon wlw characters, canon nb character - i havent seen the show myself but ive heard very good things abt it!

i am not okay with this: netflix show abt a teen girl discovering she has superpowers and hating it. protag is canon wlw (i THINK shes a lesbian but i havent watched it in a hot sec), developing wlw relationship - ianowt slaps! sad that s2 got cancelled but s1 is real good its a touch spooky and theres a bit of gore/blood so watch out lol

schitt's creek: sitcom abt a rich family who lose all their money and have to move into the motel of a town they bought as a joke. canon pansexual character and canon gay character w one of the sweetest mlm relationships - a rly good witty show w excellent character development for every character!

good omens: show abt a demon and an angel trying to stop the end of the world. every celestial character in it is nonbinary, + crowley and aziraphale have a nonexplicit (ie no on screen pda lol) romance - good omens is such a good queer show none of the characters care abt gender in the slightest lmao, plus the show in general is fantastic (the book is also very good)

movies!

the old guard: a group of immortals fight an organisation that wants to capitalise off their immortality. canon mlm couple - another one i havent seen yet (i will!) but apparently very good

it chapter 2: horror sequel to It, w the main characters returning to derry to defeat pennywise for good. canon gay character in unrequited love - i only say chapter 2 because his queerness isnt referenced at all in the first film, again its big horror and theres no gay romance just gay tragedy but its a good film

love, simon: romcom about a closeted gay teen falling in love w someone over emails. do i even need to state the rep? - honestly if u haven't seen love simon yet what are you even DOING its so good proper fluffy queer romcom, the book (simon vs the homosapiens agenda) is also really good!! so is the sequel (leah on the offbeat) where the protag is a bi girl + it focuses on a wlw romance

the way he looks: brazilian coming of age film abt a blind teen boy falling for the new kid at his school. canon mlm relationship - this doesnt seem to be on (british) netflix anymore so idk where youd find it with subtitles but i rmr liking it a lot!

games!

night in the woods: 2d platformer abt a young woman (well. cat) dropping out of college and coming home to live w her parents + discovering spooky happenings in her hometown. canon mlm couple and i believe the protag is canonically bi? - i will recommend nitw to literally anyone who will listen its one of my all time favourite games, deals w a lot of mental health issues and its absolutely gorgeous w a brilliant soundtrack and rly good dialogue thats witty and serious and realistic (its on steam + switch for sure dk abt other platforms, abt 15 quid i think?)

tell me why: adventure game abt twins returning to their childhood home + findin Secrets. canon trans male character - i havent got around to buying + playing this yet but it looks really good! (its in three chapters + on steam, not sure on price)

the art of being normal: slice of life novel abt a young trans girl discovering herself. main characters are a trans man and a trans woman. - a good novel! trigger warning for transphobic actions including descriptions of a transphobic attack on the guy, and its certainly not without its faults otherwise, but i thought it was pretty good

the adventure zone: dungeons and dragons podcast by the mcelroy brothers. idk specifics but theres a lot of canon queer characters in it! - i havent listened to taz yet but i know a lot abt it, inc that its good and funny and has plenty of queer rep

When I say “complicated relationship with gender and sexuality” I mean being unsure of gender and sexuality, not being discriminated against for it or feeling a disconnect because of societal pressures.  Cisgendered heterosexual heteromantic women, even if they feel like they have to subdue their sexual urges and act inherently feminine, aren’t LGBT just because they feel the need to conform to societal standard.  What I was referring to is people who aren’t sure whether they’re cis or trans (and generally fall somewhere among nonbinary identities) and/or are unsure of their sexuality.  I probably should’ve worded myself more clearly when I said that, but whats done is done |D

Also I’m really glad I know the reason people say “A is for ally” or else I would not be able to contain myself and debate fairly because insinuating that an actually Cishet ally is more LGBT than an asexual person is incredibly insulting, but I know (or am assuming <D) that that’s not what you meant.  The A for ally may be supposed to protect closeted LGBTPN people, but...asexuality actually acts that way for some people as well??  “Ally” is more inclusive because it includes LGBTPN people who outwardly identify themselves as cishet, but I’ve literally seen people say they’re asexual/act as celibates because they’re same-sex attracted.  Furthermore the “A for ally” argument is incredibly confusing for those unaware of what it actually means, but I suppose that’s not your fault lmao

The LGBTPN community was created to fight against homophobia and transphobia, but it has gone through so many growing pains over the years that saying “well it wasn’t originally intended for that!” isn’t a good reason to be an exclusionist.  (Not saying that’s your only reason, I’m just saying that was the reason you gave here).  I dont know if the founders of the LGBT movement/community even knew pansexual and nonbinary people existed, let alone if those founders would support them and their identities.  (That’s not an accusation, though; I’m just saying I legitimately dont know.  If you can prove that they believed one way or the other, I’d be happy to see it.)  The LGBT community was created to fight against homosexuality and transphobia, but I dont see why fighting against aphobia can’t also be a goal of the community - especially since fighting against biphobia, panphobia, and anti-nonbinary sentiments is a goal of the community now.  Furthermore I’d argue that actual Cishet allies would belong in a group thats primary purpose is to fight against homosexuality and transphobia, and that transphobic gay people and homophobic trans people and all biphobes/panphobes/anti-nonbinary people need to be kicked out, but I digress.  (That isn’t to say that cishet allies need the term “LGBT” stamped on them; what I mean to say is that the LGBT community is about a lot more than that.  It’s a community where LGBT+ people are supposed to be able to come for love and support whenever the rest of society is giving them shit.  Yes it’s supposed to fight against transphobia and homophobia, of course, but the reason the LGBT+ community is needed is so that people struggling with homophobia, transphobia, biphobia, and any other kind of sexuality/noncis discrimination [including aphobia imo] have a safe and understanding place to turn to.)

But what you said about cishet ace/aros still having problems is 100% accurate and I appreciate that exclusionists still recognize that, because sometimes I see exclusionists say that cishet ace/aros have all the same benefits that an allo cishet person has and that...concerns me.  Honestly the main reason I’m an inclusionist (although I have other smaller reasons, like the one in the post that you replied to) is because I just want ace/aros to be visible.  We can’t accomplish that on our own; we want to be in the public eye, but everyone ignores that.  It’s not that we absolutely need to be in the LGBT community or we’re being both killed for our sexuality and denied entrance into the LGBT community (because no cishet asexual or aromantic is killed for their sexuality tbh) unlike bi/pan people, but we can’t accomplish nearly as much for our identities without a community of similarly ignored people to rely on.  The LGBT community has become mainstream and ace/aro people want to hop on that train so that people can finally stop invalidating our sexuality every two minutes.  Whether that sounds underhanded or not (or even whether its accurate or not because tbh that’s just what I’ve observed, not necessarily accurate for every cishet ace/aro) is up to you, but that’s how I’ve always seen it.  (Also worth mentioning that in return for having a spot in the LGBT community, the ace/aro community wants to fight for trans and gay rights.  It’s not like we just want to mooch off the hard work of trans and gay people and never contribute lmao.  Yes homophobic and transphobic ace/aro people exist, but transphobic homosexual people exist as to homophobic transgender people, and biphobia is unfortunately very rampant in the LGBT community.  ALSO when I say “ace/aro” community I obviously dont speak for every ace/aro person, especially since some ace/aro people are exclusionists.  Alternately, some cishet ace/aros just want to call themselves LGBT because it’s the “cool” thing to do, like kids who fake mental illness to be seen as cool.  Which it’s an entire problem in and of itself that we’ve created a society where in order to be cool on the internet, all you have to do is call yourself LGBT, but I digress.  That’s a rant for another time, haha.)
