I've actually given this some thought lately, because it surprises me how often that dynamic happens with mcspirk fic, and I think I actually figured out what's happening.

I think there are two main groups of ppl who ship mcspirk:

people who ship spirk, and like McCoy, and want to include him as well

people who see them as a triumvirate

I have a lot of OT3s where there's an established canon couple, and they have their guy (gender neutral), and it's just, y'know. Clearly that guy should be in the relationship with them! Peter&El and Neal (White Collar), Pam&Jim and Dwight (The Office), Ellie&Alan and Ian (Jurassic Park), etc and so forth, it's a really common OT3 dynamic!

I think that's what's happening with group 1. I think they see spirk as basically canon, so it's not that they're intentionally making McCoy the second choice, but that they're looking at what they consider a basically canon ship, and they're adding their fave guy to it.

Meanwhile I'm in group 2 - I personally think mckirk and ESPECIALLY spones have just as much "canon" evidence as spirk. I personally would consider the actual canon situation to be queerplatonic mcspirk. You don't have to define it, but the three of them - the three of them - have some weird freakish Situation going on lmao. They're not canonically dating, they're not canonically in love, but wow do they have Something Happening there.

So if you [the general you] are in group 2, and you see established spirk and pining McCoy, and then spirk eventually coming around to date McCoy: that is McCoy being the second choice! That is them choosing each other first! And that's a dynamic that I very much dislike for that reason. Not only for McCoy (who's what, getting pity-dated, with the knowledge that he's entering a very unequal relationship?), but for Spock and Kirk, as well! For how I see the three of them, it makes Spock and Kirk out to be careless, casually cruel people - which they aren't!

Now this is different, obviously, if two of them are paired off and the other one isn't interested. Like spones and mckirk and spirk on their own (although I very much side-eye fic that ignores the third's importance to the other two - looking at you lots of spirk fic), if no one's pining, then that's just shippy fun - but it's specifically an issue when it becomes mcspirk. Because spirk ISN'T canon. So if all three are interested, but spirk get together first...that means they picked McCoy last.

Lowkey makes me want to burn down the world lmao.

But that's why it happens, I think. I think it's just coming from people who have a very, very different view of The Original Series than I do - and honestly I don't AOS tons, but an even wilder view of AOS imo, because if anyone was an established couple in AOS, it's very clearly mckirk??? So making it established spirk + pining McCoy in AOS feels just, woof, incredibly painful imo, and honestly quite cruel of Spock and Kirk.

I'm absolutely not saying it can't be done well, and I'm absolutely not saying that people shouldn't ship what they ship and write what they write and enjoy what they enjoy!!!

I just wanted to kind of break down why I think some people love that dynamic, and why some people (me) avoid reading it, because it just bums me out unless there's a reason given for why they made him a second choice. Because if there's no reason given, then it's just. They didn't want him enough. They didn't love him enough. It isn't an equal relationship.

(that was basically how the spirk -> mcspirk couples counseling fic came about - idk if you read it and you absolutely do not need to, but, that was a bunch of us talking about how McCoy is no one's third wheel! Spock and Kirk are obsessed with that man - just as he's obsessed with them, as well, to be clear. They're freaks all the way down!!!! Love that for them. Thank goodness they have each other, because lordy who else could put up with them (I say with love) lmaoooo)

Incredibly sorry for this long, long ramble lolll, but anyway, yes, I fully agree with you, he IS a treasure and he deserves the world, and he is nobody's second choice!!!

Between me not having gifs to post and that recent post I reblogged on physical media, I’m going to do something barely within the letters but hopefully within the spirit of the tag game. The original game is posting gifs from your favorite movies without labeling them. I’m going to do a sentence or two per movie mostly so this post isn’t just this paragraph & a photo.

Beauty and the Beast (1991): This one should not be a surprise at all. <3

(If BATB 2022 had gotten a physical release it’d be here as well)

The Librarian trilogy: Are they good movies? Not really, but they feature my blorbo Flynn Carsen and without them the show wouldn’t exist. Well, excitingly there’ll be another sequel show soon.

4 Pokémon movies: I enjoy all four of these movies, although probably my favorite is 4Ever.

Muppet Treasure Island: So quotable and funny, I’ve loved this movie for a long time.

Robin Hood (1973): Another long-time favorite, I do enjoy the music & characters.

George of the Jungle: Quite possibly the funniest movie I’ve ever seen, to the point even explaining a joke becomes hilarious. It also has a lot of heart & thought put into it. Please note that nostalgia is probably a factor here along with most of these choices.

The Court Jester: Another excellent comedic film with heart. It is fun to see Glynis Johns & Angela Lansbury as the main female characters.

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella: I enjoy all three versions I’ve seen (1957, 1965, & 1997) although my favorite is 1997 in part because I saw it first as a kid. Frankly, I think we should get a fourth movie based off of it if the movie industry is doing all these remakes anyway.

Love & Friendship: A very amusing adaptation of Lady Susan; it’s more biting than the usual Austen adaptation I think. While I definitely enjoyed Sense & Sensibility (2024), I think I need a bit longer than a month (edit) to determine if it’s a favorite.

Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron: I love the original movie and have done so since I first saw it- which likely was within a year or so of its release. Its soundtrack, animation, story, and characters are all awesome. While I’ve gathered the recent cartoons go against the original movie’s message, I’ll be honest that didn’t stop me from getting my own little Spirit plushie.

Bridges Live: So what happened is that I got this back in January 2023, having adored BATB 2022 and spotting that Idina Menzel (Elsa!) is involved both on the CD and the concert DVD. It was such a good time that things spiraled from there regarding me obtaining Josh Groban content. I still need to watch them in Chess in Concert though.

I would absolutely recommend "The Murdered Sun" and "Marooned", both by Christie Golden. I really enjoyed both stories. They were written a bit later and felt more in-character and had really interesting sci-fi concepts. Also there was a nice bit of Tom Whump in them as well (particularly in "Marooned").

yesterday I finished reading Bless The Beasts by Karen Haber, an early years!Voyager novel. some highlights from the book:

1) B’elanna asking Ship’s Dad aka Chakotay if she can beam down, and when he tells her no, she immediately asks Ship’s Mom aka Janeway

2) Tom and Harry at a bar on an alien planet, and Tom saying… that… to Harry wait what do you mean that’s not how platonic friends talk to each other what

3) overcompensating much for your earlier flirting, eh, Tom? Clearly Harry doesn’t buy it :D

4) this whole passage is amazing, but one thing I dearly love about early Voyager that we somewhat lose/see less of in later seasons is the Harry/B’elanna friendship, I love every time she calls him “Starfleet” and it made me so happy to see this author include that dynamic here!

(also throughout the book both B’elanna and Tom are admiring Harry’s smarts and competence and talent and brilliance, just prime early ot3 content going on, 10/10)

5) a continuation of the previous page, but with Tom Paris being immediately 100% committed to being there for B’elanna any way he can ♡

6) but don’t worry, he feels the same about Harry too ♡

(seriously, the same line being used for each of the two of them… the ot3 is strong with this one)

on the whole it wasn’t my favorite Trek book I’ve read by far— the author doesn’t seem to fundamentally either like or understand Janeway, and that detracted largely from my enjoyment of the book, and some of her other characterizations of the crew, plot points, etc *coughs* Prime Directive just didn’t seem to fit into already established canon very much, and because of that, the resolution of the story was less satisfying as well—

but her writing of Tom, Harry, and B’elanna was so spot-on and good for almost the entire book (we’re going to pretend that one scene—not pictured— of B’s internal monologue doesn’t exist, no thank you) and that was such a delight. again, perhaps not as well executed as I’d like, but I did enjoy the ecological conservation/animal conservation plot in this book as well, especially considering this was ~ a decade after Star Trek IV TVH. overall I’d give this book a solid 3 out of 5 stars because the three of them (B, H, T) really stole the show on this one! 🖖🏻 ♡

Headcanons: How Harry comforts you when you are sad/hurt/etc.

Warnings: Brief/subtle mentions of trauma sad events, depression, general bad days, illness, etc.

A/N: These aren't very long, but I'm just trying to get something out, whether it be short or simple.

Harry often feels the urge to help anyone who is having a bad time.

And when it comes to you he would be right there the second he think's you need help.

Before you were in a relationship, he would make sure to be cautious with his help and comfort.

If you were in a bad place because of a job gone wrong or something else personal happening to you, he would try to cheer you up subtly, just trying to distract you.

You knew what he was doing of course, and you appreciated it.

Eventually, when you seemed to lighten up a bit, he would gently steer the conversation towards you.

Eventually, he'd ask if you were okay and would try to get you to talk about your feelings with him.

Luckily, he is very easy to talk to.

He listens well, and can tell if you want feedback, or just a listening ear.

If your heavy emotions linger, he will suggest stress relieving activities, or will bring you your favorite drinks, snacks, etc, just to brighten your mood.

It was these actions that helped you realize he might have feelings for you.

Once you were in a relationship, his ways to comfort you were more in depth, more personal.

Hugs, silent dances in the living room, hot baths, massages, cooking together, cuddling while watching movies or show.

He would buy you flowers, hold your hand, gently rubbing his thumb cross your skin.

You would still talk of course, about everything hurting you.

He had a very good track record of helping you cope with how you were feeling, and bringing you softly back into the light.

None of this was one way either. You were always there to comfort and help him too, often in similar ways.

yes, exactly!!!! I can't really pin the reason down, but my personal opinion is that no man alive has ever been as hot as De is circa STIV, which is genuinely so funny, because he's in his 60s then, and not how like men are in their 60s now, with our modern medicine and vitamin enriched food, he was born in 1920!!! someone born in 1920 should NOT be that hot when they're 64/65!!!! but he was. he was!!!!!

In classic fashion for me, most of my writing is happening in my notes app as thoughts strike me right now, so have a no-context last portion of my latest note for an idea I’ve been slowly chipping away at since a bit before the new year.

In a stroke of unusual convenience this reads a lot like a summary quote lol, despite the fact that it’s actually deeply misleading as to the actual premise of the story. It may or may not actually get written but I sure am having fun pondering it.
