this one tweet where someone was talking abt like . . . how one thing lending itself to one version of a common mischaracterization of gojo is that ppl forget that he isn't the main protagonist, and the typical lawful good morals of a shonen hero don't apply to him. they apply to yuuji, because he's the mc. gojo, though, he can be awful. he can be selfish to a point capped off by the strict self - disciplinary code that he developed after life - altering experiences as a teen failing for the first time to save someone physically, and failing to save someone mentally. he's capable and willing to be cold, to weigh out his options logically at the cost of sacrifices, even when objectively acknowledging as much. the good side of his heart and all his best intentions are there, but they're also incredibly selective. give him the trolley problem and his answer won't always be impartial. like megumi, he'll pick and choose. like nobara, he won't be swayed by just anyone. he's grey, these characters are all grey all over, and there's no right answer.

in my opinion, gojo’s storyline has been handled so so poorly i can’t help but think it’s intentional. it is not bad writing to kill a character—even a beloved character. i know most people will dismiss my criticisms because gojo is so beloved to me and so many others. i’ve said before that i don’t mind if he died. does it hurt? of course, and i would still cry and be sad about it. but there is a beautiful way to do it. with respect and honor for his legacy—for what he has done for your manga, the characters in it, and audiences worldwide. but no…gege chose the path of horror and disrespect. at certain points i’d say to myself, well. this is a dark manga. but essentially gojo is the only character that receives this treatment. since the beginning—since suguru left him, he’s been wondering if he mattered because he was a person, or if he only mattered because he was powerful and useable. we certainly fucking answered that question. he is a weapon and nobody ever cared about him at all!!!

and we knew he was being used—he knew he was being used, but he is selfless. so he did it for his kids. for megumi and yuuji and yuuta—he wanted them to be safe. in these flashbacks it’s exceedingly clear that he knew he would die. again—that’s not my issue. gojo dying to sukuna makes plenty of sense and it would hurt to leave it there. but to give us an afterlife scene where he’s presented a choice—north and south—that concept lead nowhere, that’s truly fucked up. to leave all the subtle clues and hints for no reason but to keep people reading and theorizing his return is fucked up. to continue to use his imagery to promote your manga when you know he’s not even honored in your manga is fucked up. we don’t get a funeral or a grave for him. no one’s spoken about him in chapters despite him fighting for hours against sukuna and damaging him so much that yuuji could win, nothing. yuuta wearing him like a costume and no one is horrified about it. i thought his students WERE different. they weren’t jujutsu society yet. that’s why gojo was their teacher—shaping them into better human beings. how am i supposed to trust in their future when it seems they’re just as cold and heartless as everyone before them? no one has honored gojo in any way since the moment he died. and they’ve forgotten about him. he spent his entire life fighting and no one can even say thank you. gege intentionally used gojo to promote the end of his manga because he knows that gojo fans make up at least half of his fanbase so had we stopped reading when he died, he would have lost a lot of traction. he baited us intentionally, cruelly, and something that transcends storytelling. i’ve truly never seen a mangaka have this sort of vitriol for one of their characters and the people that love him.

we spent the entire last chapter talking about some random fucking mission when we have several unanswered questions and concerns. i thought gege said he wanted this ending to be shocking and something you didn’t see in shonen? tying everything up neatly where no one has any trauma or grief for what they’ve experienced, everyone comes back to life except the one character you hate specifically and choso, defying your own power structures and having everyone laughing into the sunset is exactly how shonen ends so what in the fuck is he talking about??

let me disclaim, this is not megumi hate at all. i love him very much and i am so happy he’s back with the group but like. he shouldn’t be able to even walk. he tanked unlimited void for over 6 minutes whenever that length caused irreversible damage to sukuna himself. not to mention the countless black flashes. so what the fuck? he doesn’t mention gojo at all?? the first time he laughs in this manga is after he reads a note written by his dead fucking caretaker about his dead fucking father? like i don’t believe. random open ended kenjaku/suguru mention just to piss me off, an absolutely no mention of gojos sacrifice or how they’ll miss him. i’m sick to my stomach. gege defiled his memory both in the story and outside of it. wow.

Do you think Sukuna could be a potential r*pist? Some people believe he is, while others disagree. From my perspective, he doesn't appear to be a serial r*pist who would commit such acts at any moment, but he is certainly not above it like Kenny.

I just want to know ur pov on this topic?( Not asking for direct evidence).

I’ll talk about Sukuna, and talk briefly about some of the philosophical themes in JJK, below. TW: mentions of the word rape below (not at all graphic or detailed).

As for your ask… let me start by saying that I *have* to provide evidence, ahah. That’s the only way to form any credible opinion. And to answer your ask: Sukuna’s motivations are power, battle, a want to fulfill any and all desires that he has. He is chaos and destruction. He is taking and never giving. He lives for himself, and everything he does is in service of his own desires. He honors his homicidal and cannibalistic urges, and if he has sexual urges, then him being a rapist isn’t beneath him, and he would be one. I’ll explain: Sukuna has little to no morals at all; he steals the body of a 15 year old kid, threatens death to Yuuji, eats women and children, wipes out an entire city as collateral damage during his “fun little outing,” laughs when Yuuji has a mental breakdown over his own failures to save people, states that “any hierarchy not based on power is boring,” etc etc etc etc etc. Sukuna is undoubtedly evil, with no regard for anything but his own wishes, and possibly Uraume. So yeah, I wouldn’t put it past him to use and abuse women like that. He can massacre and eat them, he is devoid of empathy, and he has no inner convictions to be fair to others. I don’t see why he would have a higher moral standing when it comes to rape.

That being said, people might argue that Sukuna doesn’t seem to have sexual urges, saying that sex isn’t what interests him in the canon storyline. If that’s the case, he wouldn’t be a rapist. But I think that it’s quite possible that Gege just left that part out, cause let’s be honest, while there’s no mention of sex in JJK, alllll those adult characters being asexual is highly unrealistic.

Personally, I’ve never understood the romanticization of Sukuna. He’s inherently evil, and he didn’t have a tragic descent into villainy in the way Geto did. But perhaps it could be argued that in the same way Geto didn’t have total control over what he became, Sukuna didn’t have a choice in being psychopathic. (Still, we all should aim to be good, even if we don’t feel inclined to do so, or have less motivation to do so). Every single character in JJK is living by their own convictions, and the lines between “right and wrong” are often blurry, as it is in real life. Is it right to let Yuuji Itadori live, when he’s the vessel of Sukuna— allowing for the later destruction of Shibuya? Is it right to play on the villains side just to get revenge for your brothers, in the way Choso did? Is it right to kill all non sorcerers for a “better world” in the way that Geto did? (The answer for the last one is no, btw). These are just a handful of the many “is this right, or wrong?” questions that exist in Jujutsu Kaisen. And yet, even if you answer “no” to all of these questions, it’s impossible to deny just how understandable each character’s actions and convictions are, when you consider their background, and realize that people have their reasons for acting the way they do, and they oftentimes don’t know any better when they make mistakes.

Fanon and canon can be extremely different. I want people to enjoy their comfort characters. But if people want to participate in meaningful discussions, then I highly encourage people to look at characters as they canonly are, and recognize when they’re making a character OOC in their head. It’s fine for people to indulge in their interpretations of a character, and I’m not the police for that. But when mischaracterizing characters overrides the actual essence of a character in a character based discussion, and people preach about their visions, it gets a bit tricky, because we’re no longer seeing things from a thoughtful perspective, and that can lead to dismissing nuance and critical thinking. I think that learning how to better understand a character AND people, requires skills that we all should put in the effort to build, and I’m definitely learning to do that, myself!

In the modern day, cause manz is old as fuck, he either listens to hard metal or phonk. There´s no in between.

He just loves noisy ass music that gives you pounding headaches after 50 seconds.

Mostly listens to it to block out Yuujis music. Cause he internally cries every time Yuuji plays preppy ass pop music. Makes him fr wanna rip his eardrums out.

BUT.

He has a huge guilty pleasure that not even he is aware of.

And that´s Britney Spears. No I will not elaborate

Toji Fushiguro

ANYTHING but preppy music.

Literally anything but that.

I feel like he isn´t the type to listen to a lot of music but when he does he always listens to the same songs cause he isn´t interested in exploring and expanding his tastes.

Lowkey feel like he has a thing for Doja Cat and Bryson Tiller.

I´m convinced he found out about reggaeton once and has become the only thing he listens to.

i see some people on tiktok and twitter acting like gojo not getting memorialized is the only logical conclusion to his arc to either

1) symbolize how no one really understood him and/or could reach him or

2) he shouldn’t be an exception and no other sorcerer got a funeral/memorial either, that’s just how sorcerer society is

and while i firmly believe there is no objectively correct way to end a story, the attitude some of those fans are showing trying to act like everyone who wanted something different is less media literate than they are is annoying me so time to bring up reasonable counters to those arguments:

on 1): complete understanding isn’t a prerequisite for affection and/or grief. Multiple characters (Yuji, Yuta and Shoko at the very least) are shown to have some amount of care for him and them wanting to lay his body to rest, or at least offhandedly mentioning that it was done does not contradict their lack of complete understanding of him in any way. Yuji himself says that he will never forget Gojo (Yuji is also arguably the only character really given closure about Gojo’s death in the story through that flashback (with the exception of Satoru Gojo (hehe see what i did there) and the other deceased characters in 236)

In fact, one could argue that them not fully understanding that Gojo wanted everyone to move on from him and “forget” him would have been reinforced by them grieving him

(I don’t personally think that them processing his loss in a healthy way (read, all the studies about how funerary rites are important to a healthy grieving process) would be contradictory to his wish but since people want to argue that that’s why it was done i think it’s fair to bring up the counter)

on 2) this could easily be solved by having the characters honor all of the recently deceased. (Nanami, Yuki, Choso (what better way to mark him accepting his human side like Yuki told him to)) People keep bringing up how none of the sorcerers got a funeral (as well as Todo’s speech in Shibuya about how they live in through their comrades) and while that is correct (in fact, Todo’s speech represents the whole reason why the last couple chapters are named after Gojo’s dream of a reformed jujutsu society, a dream that his students are now carrying out for him, one of the main issues with traditional jujutsu society (and consequently one of the reasons that lead do Geto’s defection and the formation of Gojo’s dream) is the fact that sorcerer lives are treated as expendable, the fact that sorcerers aren’t given the time and support they need to process the trauma they are put through on their missions.

Part of letting the kids experience their youth is also giving them healthy coping mechanisms and while i am not someone who believes that every character needs a “therapy” ending (hence why i’ve been yelling about not wanting Gojo (who is satisfied with his own death and afterlife) to come back to life to un-learn all of his unhealthy coping mechanisms and his (partially self imposed) isolation as the strongest) i do think getting time to acknowledge and process their losses is part of that.

(Looking at Megumi especially, he might have kept distance between himself and Gojo, and fanon portrayal of their relationship often makes it deeper than it is in canon, but Gojo was still the most consistent adult mentor figure he had in his life, and he experienced Sukuna killing him with his body, a letter isn’t gonna cut it i’m afraid… Megumi’s character arc in general is one people are criticizing and i do to some degree agree that while him freeing himself from Tsumiki specifically being his sole motivation is something, him immediately finding new people (Yuji and Hana, the latter for guilt reasons) to base his reason for living on is a bit… but that’s part of characters not needing to have a perfect therapy ending i guess…

people like to bring up that Nanami, who has been dead for a while now, was also never shown getting a funeral but characters were shown processing his death once the fight was over, both through the conversation between Gojo, Shoko and Ijichi and through Ino requesting and using his weapon in the fight against Sukuna. Yaga’s death was also discussed between Gojo and Gakuganji (changing his conservative outlook) as well as as a motivator for Kusakabe

While Yuji was definitely shown processing Gojo’s death (in chapter 265 and 271) the characters i personally would have liked to see processing/commenting on Gojo’s death the most are Yuta and Shoko,

Yuta for “i will share the mantle of becoming a Monster to take some of the load of Gojo-sensei” reasons (all this talk about how concerned everyone was about what it would mean for his humanity to have to take over Gojo’s body and then we don’t get a single panel about how he actually felt about it after the fact)

and Shoko because we get all these glimpses of her caring about him in her own way (most notably the “i was there too, wasn’t i” moment as well as her stress smoking during his fight against Sukuna, and in a way still being his closest and oldest confidant, even if they never connected the way he did with geto (hence why he felt comfortable leaving the letters for Nobara and Megumi to her, as well as being the reason why he was a little miffed at her lack of reaction to the body-switching plan). Shoko isn’t an emotional character, she is very desensitized to the death and injury of people around her, but the scene by Tsumiki’s grave and her comment about Geto’s body confirms that she (to some degree) considers it an honor and a privilege to be able to give them post-mortem care. I never wanted a scene of her crying over his body or anything, but a scene of her standing by his grave (which could have been inserted between the Tsumiki grave scene and the panel of her throwing away her cigarettes) would have done enough for me.

People like to make fun of everyone asking for a funeral by saying “sorry y’all didn’t get a ten page funeral with everyone crying about Gojo”, but personally i would have been happy with a single panel showing his grave/ossuary with an epitaph (possibly the same for Geto so we finally get confirmation that Gojo’s (and the Hasaba twins’) wish of having his body put to rest was fulfilled, especially after those panels in 270 sowed more doubts), maybe a couple extra panels of the characters i mentioned earlier

also not to be extra brain rotten stsg but Gojo being put to rest in a way where he is with suguru (Shoko being the person most likely to make those arrangements for both of them and also being the person who knew how much they meant to eachother the best) or him being memorialized together with everyone else who fell in those past couple months would symbolize that while he might have been lonely in life, he is not lonely in death (just like he wasn’t lonely anymore in the airport scene in 236)

what i haven’t seen people bring up much is that sorcerers as a whole are said not to be religious. Despite the heavy buddhist themes in the story, sorcerer society as a whole is described as secular, something pointed out by the chairman of the star religious group. On the world building front i think it would have been interesting to know how they process their dead, past the general vague description of “shoko handling bodies” and “having to make sure the body can’t be misused/the sorcerer won’t turn into a curse after death”. Maybe that’s my little goth heart but i really would have liked to know, we see people end up in the morgue but no one really knows what happens after that. Maybe everyone (whose body can be recovered) is cremated and disposed of in some unknown location (Greek cemeteries have “bone digesters”, big pits where bones are put if the family doesn’t rent an ossuary/claim the remains after the lease on the grave plot is up, maybe it’s something like that), maybe there are ossuaries like the one pictured in the Shibuya OP (it’s still unclear to me how much input Gege had in those), maybe the cremated remains are given back to the family on a case by case basis (especially for people from non-sorcerer families who might have religious beliefs). Either way, it’s something i think would have been interesting to know, plus lack of big funerary rites doesn’t really mean the characters can’t think of/mention their deceased comrades.

now i’m not saying everyone who has a different opinion on this is wrong, again, that’s not the approach i like to bring to media analysis/commentary, in fact this whole rant is prompted by my distaste for people doing that, but that is what i personally would have liked to see to call this a 10/10 ending for ME

(CONTAINS MANGA SPOILERS AS A LOT OF CHOSO AND YUKI SCENES ARENT ANIMATED YET. ) i’ve already covered many other things about choso in my previous essays. in this one i want to start off by talking about his relationship with tsukumo yuki. i’ve mentioned there relationship before but i want to get in depth with it. choso and yuki first meet in shibuya towards the end of the incident when choso switches teams. there’s a bit more but it’s been a while sense i’ve read the entire manga so ima lightly brush over the less important stuff. later on choso and yuki volenteer to become choso and tengens guards together wich i feel like is where they start getting close. in the manga yuki flashes choso smiles alot and even indirectly stated that he is her type. yuki and choso very clearly care for each other and i feel like yuki is one of the few people choso feels comfortable opening up to. i know i bring up the choos and yuki bar scene in the manga a lot but it’s just such a good example. choso is seen breaking down and telling yuki his feelings whilst she comforts him. he’s literally ugly crying to her and telling her he doesn’t feel human enough and she’s there proving him comfort. yuki even refused to let choso fight kenjaku on his own as she believes he will die if he goes on his own. inevitably yuki ends up dying pushing her teqnique to its limit in hopes of defeating kenjaku. in the panel where yuki gets the hole through her you can see a shot of chosos face in the corner, he looks obviously distraught as he just watched one of the people he cares most about get turned into a donut. yuki ends up dying with her last words being to choso. she used her last living moments to tell choso he is no longer a curse and will live on as a human as she knows choso is worried about being half curse and half human as he doesn’t feel human enough. you can only imagine how that affected choso as his life has already been full of loss. his mother, his brothers, and now yuki. yuki was also the one person he found comfort in and now she’s gone. choso was heartbroken over yukis death and he tired his hardest to honor her passing by inheriting her notes to his younger brother, yuji itadori.
