I have just learned that the Dutch word for “baseball player” is “honkballer,” and is this even a real universe or are you all just having me on.

The Pevensie kids are otherwordly in more ways than the naked eye reveals.

For starters, with all the years they have spent around great cats, they are absolutely silent when they walk. They can stalk and prowl like no one's business, and once, when a girl pissed off Lucy, she showed her her teeth.

When a shrink asks her why she is scared of cats, so many years later , she remembers the white flash in the schoolyard, the sudden certainty of death.

Second of all, they don't seem to leave footprints in snow. In the winters of Narnia, magic was all around Cair Paravel, benign spirits showing them how to leave no traces, go unseen in the great white. Some swear they move without touching the earth. No one is sure enough to rebutt them.

The Pevensies are unbeatable in snowball fights. Especially Susan can throw like a honkball pitcher, able to single out and pick off targets that should be out of reach.

When the boys drink alcohol for the first time, at ages 17 and 15, they turn out to have great tolerance, something no one their age should have. Yet Peter and Edmund can beat anyone in a drinking game. Narnian spirits were strong (pun intented), so they do not find this feat particularly challenging. And no one understands how Susan puts away bottles and bottles of wine without ever slurring her words or losing her razor sharp mind.

The boys that keep pouring her more wine, hoping to take her home drunk, leave disappointed every night. Susan knows what's up. She's been forced to sit through boring diplomatic dinners with alcohol as her only interesting companion, is used to men trying to take advantage when she drinks. She will not be tricked by school boys.

They have a tolerance for other substances, too.

When someone gets the bright idea to roofie Lucy at age 16, he ends up with a nail through his foot, hanging from the highest tree in London.

Lucy shows up the next day with dirt under her nails and a hammer in her backpack. The teachers take one look at Peter, who stares back with a glare that could refreeze Narnia, and decide not to say a word.

They're all insanely strong swimmers. Susan won prizes before, but now she's breaking records. Edmund saves a man twice his weight from drowing, dragging him along across a cold lake for half a mile.

No one understands how the scrawny, 5"9 kid pulled that off. Or how he manages to hold his breath for so long.

And then there is the question of their minds.

Suddenly, Edmund can beat even the most experienced men in chess. He goes on to become champion of the region and then of the whole of England.

Peter, once a mediocre student, is now a stunningly good writer. When his professor reads his essay for Ethics, he weeps, something that has never happened before. Many see a future in academia for him.

Susan becomes known as the best problem solver in school. She's able to resolve many conflicts, not in the least because she's so attractive men stop thinking about fighting the second she steps into a room. But underneath the beauty resides a smooth operator. Her professors don't doubt for a second she'll be a brilliant politician.

Lucy no longer has the child like innocence from before the war. Her sense of wonder never left her, though. The centaurs have taught her astronomy, and looking at the stars reminds her of Narnia, one of the few things that are the same. The boarding school telescope goes missing an awful lot, as does she. Often, her brothers and sister come along, especially on bright nights. They never get caught.

They've changed. And they hold onto these pieces of Narnia, because it is all they have left.

the dutch language actually makes so much more sense if you understand it as the language in between english and german as processed by people who love to give themselves brain injuries. this is the country that calls baseball "honkbal" and the act of batting "slag"

im mad that major league baseball and miraculous ladybug share the same abbreviation. in order to make my searches easier as a fan of both, i think baseball should adopt the dutch name, Honkbal Hoofdklasse, partially because it's easier to differentiate them for me personally, but mostly because honkbal is the absolute funniest word to say

See I just shorten it to ML since 'Ladybug' is one word.

But also 'Honkbal' is fun to say

Inter Miami-eigenaar David Beckham luidde zijn eerste kampioenschap in na zijn pensionering. In feite ontbrak het hem als speler niet aan kampioensonderscheidingen. David Beckham is blij met de beslissingen die hij deze zomer heeft genomen, en zijn keuzes kunnen het fortuin van Inter Miami helpen veranderen. Als eigenaar van Inter Miami, David Beckham, bereidde hij de roze nr. 10-goedkope voetbalshirts voor Lionel Messi.

Nadat Lionel Messi Paris Saint-Germain verliet als free agent, liet hij de fans niet al te lang in spanning. Lionel Messi koos voor Inter Miami, dat de Big Five verliet om voor Major League Soccer te kiezen. De invloed van Lionel Messi heeft een superkracht getransformeerd en hij heeft de manier waarop voetbal wordt bekeken door nieuwe fans veranderd. Amerika heeft tientallen jaren nodig gehad om een sportsituatie te vormen, maar voetbal is de vijfde sport. Amerikaans voetbal, honkbal, ijshockey en basketbal staan allemaal voor op voetbal, waarbij lokale fans games met meer fysieke strijd meer waarderen. Er zijn ook fans die houden van competities die individuele heldenmoed vertegenwoordigen, en die nog steeds de competitieve charme van voetbalwedstrijden onderschatten.

15 juli 2023 is het officiële debuut van Lionel Messi bij Inter Miami en eigenaar David Beckham is volledig voorbereid om zijn komst te verwelkomen. Lionel Messi speelde goed in zeven wedstrijden en leidde Inter Miami naar een succesvolle titel. Major League Soccer-fans houden van de individuele heldenmoed van Lionel Messi, wiens invloed baas David Beckham in vervoering heeft gebracht. David Beckham hield van het Manchester United voetbalshirt als speler, maar hij hongert nog steeds naar titels als eigenaar van Inter Miami. Dit jaar stelde de beslissing van David Beckham Inter Miami in staat om het eerste kampioenschap in de teamgeschiedenis te winnen, en hij verscheen ook bij de eerste uitreiking van het kampioenschap na zijn pensionering.

Rippling with Lobo Legend Coach Ray Birmingham

I was so excited that Coach Birmingham agreed to come on the podcast. I have been a big fan of his as he is a legend in college baseball. I just knew if we could have an opportunity to visit, he'd share some of the incredible wisdom he's acquired throughout his career and boy was a right. This episode is pure gold and is chalked full of great stories about motivating and leading that everyone can learn from.

  Plus he is just one of the kindest and most thoughtful men I think I've ever met. Although I knew him through his social network presence, the conversation with him was so easy to have. He made me feel like he and I have been friends for years. He's a Rippler through and through.

  Here's a bit more about Coach:

  At UNM, Birmingham has the second-most wins in program history with 402 to his credit as the Lobo skipper, earning his 400th DI Career win on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2021 versus Air Force. He also initiated and had led the ongoing development and execution of the $3.65 million expansion of Santa Ana Star Field as well as UNM’s first privately-funded building on campus – the R.D. and Joan Dale Hubbard Clubhouse that was completed in December of 2016.

For his overall career, Birmingham is in exclusive company having won over 1,000 games. Entering the 2021 season, Birmingham will have coached in parts of six decades dating back to the late 1970s. Birmingham is also the winningest coach in the state’s history as all 1,220 of his victories have come coaching for teams in his home state of New Mexico (College of the Southwest, New Mexico Junior College and UNM).

In 2015, Birmingham was inducted into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame and was also inducted into the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2011. He also currently serves on the College Baseball Hall of Fame Selection Committee.

Birmingham has also coached or spoken at numerous clinics throughout the United States and South America. He has been published in the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Journal and worked professionally for the Cleveland Indians, Oakland A’s and Kansas City Royals.

In 2004, Birmingham led the NJCAA all-star team to four wins in five games over the Chinese All-Stars in Beijing, China. In 2007, Birmingham was selected as the head coach of the NJCAA all-star team when China returned to the United States to play the U.S. team. Birmingham also coached the NJCAA West All-Stars to a three-game sweep over the East All-Stars in the summer of 2009.

In the summer of 2014, Birmingham served as the hitting coach for USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team, which was made up of the top collegiate players from around the country. Team USA played games across North Carolina before traveling to the Netherlands to participate in Honkbal-Haarlem Baseball Week. The CNT won the international tournament by outscoring its opponents 34-6 over its final seven games. Birmingham helped guide Tennessee’s Christin Stewart to “Best Hitter” honors at the tournament and Albuquerque’s own Alex Bregman of LSU was named Honkbal Baseball Week MVP. Team USA concluded its summer with five games in Cuba, finishing with an overall record of 18-8-2.

In his 43rd year of coaching, Birmingham has been a part of 22 championships. All the college baseball programs Birmingham has coached have reached the top 25 in the national rankings at some point. Between University of the Southwest, New Mexico Junior College and New Mexico, 167 athletes have gone on to play professional baseball with 39 coming while the head coach at UNM. Additionally, under Birmingham at UNM, 40 athletes have earned All-America honors and 10 have been freshman All-Americans as well. Birmingham was also the coach of NMJC’s first basketball conference championship team – a team that was ranked No. 1 in the country.

Kinderen die een sport beter willen leren of interesse hebben in een lidmaatschap kunnen deze (woensdag)middagen bezoeken en lekker sporten. Op het programma staat: beachvolleybal, voetbal, honkbal, rugby, hockey en tennis/padel.
