2021 Honda Valentino - mixed media AU (5/∞)
Marc has never been a fan of team launches (any event where you have to wear your leathers while not being allowed to ride the bike is rarely fun) but as he approaches the hangar in the Barcelona suburbs and finds a place to park himself, he tries to focus on the positives.
This was only a 20 minutes drive from his home. It's digital and he won't have to interact with a lot of people. In about three hours, he'll already be back to his dogs, just in time to go walk them out with Alex.
Well, and then there is the Valentino Rossi of it all. Something Marc's mind dutifully ignores until he's lead to the room he's supposed to use to change himself and he comes face to face with Valentino the second he opens the door.
Valentino is sitting on a small chair in a corner, long legs crossed at the ankle, his attention on his phone until Marc enters.
He's wearing the Honda leathers and it's bringing Marc two decades back, back when he was a little boy in front of the TV, watching Valentino zoom past everyone on track on top of an orange bike.
It's the leathers Marc has been wearing for the past decade, identical saved for the yellow of the boots, the yellow of the knee slides and the yellow of the gloves that Marc can catch a glimpse of on the table to the side.
The sight is more dizzying than Marc prepared himself for.
They shared a couple of Zoom calls over the last couple of weeks but Valentino looks different now, his beard shaven and his wild curls hidden under a cap.
The last time Marc saw Valentino in the flesh had been in Jerez, when Valentino ran into him on Friday night of the second week, exiting the elevator that Marc was waiting for.
Marc's left hand had immediately risen to his right arm and Marc could see the immediate panic in Valentino's eyes, his mask not able to conceive the evident grimace on his face.
"Sorry," Valentino had apologized. Marc hadn't missed the way his hand had almost tried to reach for Marc.
"It's fine," Marc had said, watching Valentino carefully. He'd expected another reaction, something ranging anywhere from "Are you okay?" to "You shouldn't be here".
What Valentino had gone for had been "They changed the location of the media room compared to last week, still on the second floor but you have to head right instead of left when you leave the elevator."
Marc had stared at him and Valentino had given him a quick nod before moving around Marc and leaving him there, the doors of the elevators closing before Marc could get in.
The next day, Marc rode in practice with so much pain that he had to quit for the weekend. The following week he was getting his second arm surgery and soon after, he was putting an end to his 2020 season.
Valentino’s announcement that he was joining Honda came. He never contacted Marc. Marc never expected him too.
"Ciao," Valentino says from the other side of the room, his eyes leaving the screen he was previously focused on but the phone staying in his hands.
Marc greets him back, a short hello and a polite nod before focusing on the side of the room where his stuff has been piled, his leathers hanging on a hanger and the rest of his equipment down in a bag.
JL must have been here earlier. Marc has no idea why he's no longer there. He's tempted to call for just a moment but quickly decides against it. He can dress up on his own. He can spend time alone with Valentino as well. It's fine.
The silence is a little disconcerting and Marc can't tell if Valentino is giving him privacy or if Marc just can't feel his eyes on him (and then, he has to try to not feel disappointed by the possibility that Valentino doesn't want to look, which is even worse, all things considered).
Putting the on the bottom part of his leathers is easy, mechanical, brain working on auto-pilot. Same thing for his long sleeves and his boots. When Marc gets up and starts going for the next step, he wishes JL was there.
His arm has no right feeling so stiff two months after his latest injury. Did he overdo it during his latest training session or is he just too tense from the program today? Both feel too ridiculous for his liking right then.
Marc doesn't hear Valentino moving.
"Let's start with your right, it'll be easier on your arm," Valentino says behind him. Marc can feel the pull on his leathers as Valentino now holds onto the top part of them.
"I don't need to go easy on my arm," Marc bites back. It's too defensive. He can't bring himself to care.
Valentino doesn't answer but Marc can still feel the tension on his leathers and he accepts the help, slipping his right arm first into the offered hole of his sleeve and then the left, feeling the back of Valentino's hands against his shoulder blades as he finishes pulling the suit up around Marc's shoulders.
Marc takes care of zipping up his leathers and when he turns around, Valentino is three steps back, his helmet held between his hands.
Marc stares. A whole bunch of seconds too long.
"You're welcome," Valentino says. "Do you need to fix your hair first or can we go?"

OLD KENT ROAD:
MONOPOLY'S DUD SQUARE
Old Kent Road : Monopoly's dud square. The cheapest and only property south of the river. At Bricklayer’s Arms, I alight with the crowd and pause in the shadow of the orbital. Here, pavement breeds new pavement. Slabs of grey-green asphalt spill out like wet turbot skins - complete with chewing-gum tubercles. Like a noose, the elevated motorway pushes people out. Tesco bags blow against the perimeter. A sour blue-raspberry condom licks my heel.
10:27
I plan my zigzagged passage across the pedestrian islands. If you are to inhabit the city, you learn to perfect your dance with death. I make it to Island B before the black Honda turns left. I fast-walk to Island C. I pull down my hood and reply to a text. By an inch, I miss the side view mirror of an articulated lorry. I breathe out: Ellipsis. Michel de Certeau would read these maneuvers as a prosody poem. Under the traffic’s imposing rhyme scheme, I intercept and interrupt. ‘Asyndeton cuts out: it undoes continuity and undercuts its plausibility.’ My walk is constituted of  footstepped stutters - Deletions. I dart between cars - Slash. I mount the pavement- Hyphen. I write a text of ‘enlarged singularities and separate islands.’ My rhetoric is hinged on spatial elements, street furniture, and their references. I weave between bollards and cat’s eyes. I scamper between the lights of the cars - two streams, red and gold.
10:29
A pair of Nike Jordans straggle from a power line. I interpret this as a hanging - a gibbeting. Walking is forbidden here. I use the adverb ‘here’ because how else does one condense this terrain? This junction of stifled oxygen. This junction of cars that hurl as if launched from the barrel of a gun. Between traffic, I hear the electricity hum through the power lines and across the white sky. Whilst there isn’t the soil to grow a weed, red roses repeatedly appear at the railings. A photograph of a young boy. A note: ‘Jimmy, we miss you. I should have held your hand.’
10:31
Tumblr media
My feet sidle at the entrance. Somewhere in the depths of the corridor, a man sits like a large toad. His craned shoulders are framed by a ravine of dismembered circuit boards, computer carcasses, and hard drives. The narrow inlet is thick with the warm olfactory of plastic and solder. He looks up from his work and calls out to me.
‘If you want to take my picture, you can leave.’ His eyes hang through thick rimmed glasses.
I push my phone down into the side of my leg and come clean.
‘I did want to take a photo but you wouldn’t need to be in it …’
He sighs, puts the laptop down, and begins to inch through the clutter.
‘What is it about this place that you people like? I’m not a celebrity.’ He smiles and kicks a small satellite dish from the doorway. It spins and cracks on the last step.
I collect the pieces and hand them to him.
‘I have two Ebay accounts. One sells hardware, the other sells the stuff I can’t fix.’ He drops the shards of fibre-glass into a cardboard box and steps out into the rain.

2023 Honda CBR650R
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Model updates: Honda’s versatile middleweight sports bike was the best-selling sports bike in Europe in 2021. It continues to carve out a strong following thanks to its unmistakeable CBR look and rich specification including 41mm Showa Separate Function Big Piston USD forks, high-revving four-cylinder engine, HSTC, assist/slipper clutch, under seat USB Type-C socket and LCD display. For 23YM, visual updates further heighten the appeal. - Introduction Honda’s fully faired CBR650F, launched in 2014 alongside the naked CB650F, provided a healthy slice of four-cylinder middleweight performance, very much at the sporty end of the ‘sports touring’ spectrum. Five years later, the CBR650F became the CBR650R, the upgrade from ‘F’ to ‘R’ indicating an even more potent shot of sporty ability designed to be explored, used and enjoyed on the street. In the process of its transformation the CBR650R became, deliberately, a rare breed: a four-cylinder sports bike that provides similar pleasure, enjoyment and adrenaline to an RR machine, yet with enough practicality – and sensible running costs – to make it a viable option as day-to-day transport in addition to weekend fun. It’s a direction that’s been well received. In 2021, the CBR650R was the best-selling sports bike in Europe. The 21YM version continued the development curve with user-driven detail improvements and a major upgrade for the front suspension. For 23YM the CBR650R gains aesthetic updates to both colour options that further enhance its road presence and desirability.
Tumblr media
- Model Overview The CB650R received a significant refresh for 21YM. The major news was application of 41mm Showa Separate Function Big Piston (SSF-BP) USD forks – high quality suspension that really elevates the bike’s handling ability. EURO5 compliance for the engine was achieved with no loss of top end power; other detail improvements included improved visibility for the LCD display and USB Type-C charging socket under the seat. The headlight reflectors, side panels and rear mudguard were all also updated. The 23YM CBR650R will be available in two colour options: Mat Gunpowder Black Metallic with new black engine and cam covers, blue highlights and red shock spring Grand Prix Red with new black engine and cam covers, black belly pan and front mudguard and red Honda logo and shock spring
Tumblr media
- Key Features 3.1 Chassis - 41mm Showa Separate Function Big Piston (SFF-BP) USD forks  - Four-piston, radial-mount front brake calipers and floating discs - 120/70-ZR17 and 180/55-ZR17 front and rear tyres The steel diamond frame uses pressed swingarm pivot plates and twin elliptical spars with a rigidity balance specifically tuned (stiffer around the headstock and more flexible in the spar sections) to deliver balanced handling characteristics, with high levels of rider feedback. Rake is set at 25.5° with trail of 101mm and wheelbase of 1,450mm. Kerb weight is 208kg. Showa’s 41mm Separate Function Big Piston (SFF-BP) USD forks offer high-quality reaction. A pressure separation damper in one fork tube and spring mechanism in the other deliver high damping performance and lighter weight. Together with the use of a larger sized piston the result is increased feel, bump absorption and control. Adjustable for 10-stage spring preload, the single-tube monoshock (with its spring now finished in red) operates directly on the curvaceous gravity die-cast aluminium swingarm. Four-piston radial-mount front brake calipers work 310mm wave-pattern floating discs, and are paired with a single-piston rear caliper and 240mm disc. The ABS is a two-channel system. Cast aluminium wheels mount 120/70-ZR17 and 180/55-ZR17 front and rear tyres.
Tumblr media
3.2 Styling & equipment - Minimal panels and rear mudguard/number plate mount - LCD display easy to read - USB Type-C socket under the seat - New visual updates or both colours including new all black engine cases and cam cover With its four-cylinder power unit clearly on display the CBR650R’s wrapping ramps up pure sporting appeal; dual LED headlights emit an uncompromising stare, and the upper and lower fairings blend muscularity with slim lines and angles. The seat unit, too is compact and truncates the rear of the machine, adding to the hard-edged sense of purpose. Trim side panels accentuate the minimalism, as does the steel rear mudguard/number plate mount. The aggressive riding position starts with clip-on handlebars that mount beneath the top yoke, matched to rear set footpegs. There’s also a USB Type-C socket located under the seat, for easy charging of a mobile device. Seat height is set at 810mm. Stylish, easy-to-read LCD instruments include Shift-Up, Gear Position and Peak Hold indicators. For 23YM, both colour options receive visual updates including new all black engine and cam covers. The Mat Gunpowder Black Metallic features new blue highlights on the tank, tail and fairing, and a new red shock spring. The Grand Prix Red features a new black front mudguard and a new black belly pan that features a bold red Honda logo that chimes neatly with the new red fork spring.
Tumblr media
3.3 Engine - 70kW peak power, 63Nm peak torque with 35kW A2 licence option - Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) - Assist/slipper clutch The 649cc, DOHC 16-valve engine is tuned to create the purest, most enjoyable mid-sized four-cylinder performance possible, with the classically fast ‘pick-up’ through the rev range and hard-hitting, high-revving top-end for which Honda’s in-line’s fours are renowned. Peak power of 70kW arrives @ 12,000rpm with peak torque @ 63Nm delivered at 9,500 rpm. A 35kW option is available for A2 licence holders. Direct cam actuation makes for a compact cylinder head; bore and stroke is set at 67mm x 46mm with compression ratio of 11.6:1. Iridium spark plugs are employed and twin air ducts – either side of the fuel tank – feed the airbox and produce a throaty intake roar. Asymmetric piston skirts minimise bore contact and reduce friction. Ferrous spines on the outer surface of the cylinder sleeves reduce oil consumption (and friction) with improved heat transfer and a silent SV cam chain reduces frictional losses by using a Vanadium coating on its pins. Internal water channelling from cylinder head to cylinders does away with most of the exterior hoses. The engine uses a compact internal architecture, stacked six-speed gearbox and starter layout with the cylinders canted forward 30°. An assist/slipper clutch eases upshifts while managing rear-wheel lock up under hard braking and rapid downshifts. Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) manages rear wheel traction; it can be turned off should the rider choose. Fuel consumption of 20.4km/l (WMTC mode) gives a range of over 300km from the 15.4L fuel tank. EURO5 compliance required revisions to the ECU, cam lobes, intake timing, exhaust pipe, catalyser and silencer, as well as the addition of a crank pulsar. - Accessories A range of Genuine Honda Accessories are available for the CBR650R, both available as individual items and grouped in packs, that are ready to bolt straight on to the bike: The Sport Pack enhances the dynamism and sportiness of the motorcycle by featuring the following accessories: - Quickshifter - Colour matched Rear Seat Cowl - Smoke High Wind Screen - Tank Pad The Comfort Pack has been designed to increase rider comfort and features: - Clear High Wind Screen - Grip Heaters & Attachment The Travel Pack includes all the parts necessary to maximize the carrying capacity of the CBR650R and features - Tank Bag & Attachment - Rear Seat Bag & Attachment The line-up is completed with Wheel Stripes available in different colours. All the accessories featured in packs can also be purchased individually. - Technical Specifications ENGINE Type Liquid-cooled 4-stroke 16-valve DOHC inline-4 cylinder Engine Displacement (cm³) 649cc Bore x Stroke (mm) 67.0mm x 46.0mm Compression Ratio 11.6:1 Max. The Honda Elevate, a compact SUV launched in India in September 2023, has garnered attention for its style and features. One of the key considerations for potential buyers is fuel efficiency, especially with rising fuel prices. Honda claims an impressive 16.92 kmpl for the Elevate with the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) automatic gearbox. But does real-world driving experience mirror these claimed figures? We put the Elevate CVT to the test to find out. Unveiling the Engine and Transmission Before diving into the fuel efficiency results, let's revisit the technical specifications of the Honda Elevate CVT: Engine: 1.5-liter naturally aspirated (NA) petrol engine Power: 121 PS Torque: 145 Nm Transmission: CVT Claimed vs. Real-World Fuel Efficiency While Honda boasts a claimed fuel efficiency of 16.92 kmpl for the Elevate CVT, our real-world testing revealed a different picture: City Driving: During our city driving tests, the Elevate CVT delivered an average fuel efficiency of 12.60 kmpl. This falls short of the claimed figure by approximately 4.32 kmpl. Highway Driving: On the highway, the Elevate CVT performed closer to the claimed figure, achieving an average fuel efficiency of 16.40 kmpl. This is just 0.52 kmpl lower than the claimed figure. Understanding the Discrepancy The discrepancy between claimed and real-world fuel efficiency is a common phenomenon. Several factors can contribute to this difference: Driving style: Aggressive driving habits, such as frequent acceleration and braking, can significantly impact fuel efficiency. Maintaining a steady speed and avoiding harsh maneuvers can improve fuel economy. Traffic conditions: Stop-and-go traffic prevalent in city driving significantly reduces fuel efficiency compared to smooth highway cruising. Road conditions: Uneven roads and rough terrain can increase fuel consumption due to the additional power required to navigate them. Vehicle condition: Regular maintenance, including proper tire inflation and air filter cleaning, can contribute to optimal fuel efficiency. Expected Fuel Efficiency for Different Driving Scenarios Based on our testing and considering the factors mentioned above, here's an estimated range of fuel efficiency you can expect from the Honda Elevate CVT: City driving: Over 13 kmpl Highway driving: Around 15 kmpl Mixed driving (city and highway): Around 14 kmpl Remember, these are estimates, and your actual fuel efficiency may vary depending on the factors mentioned earlier. Tips for Optimizing Fuel Efficiency While achieving the claimed fuel efficiency figures might be challenging in real-world scenarios, you can still adopt practices to maximize your Elevate CVT's fuel economy: Maintain a steady speed: Avoid unnecessary acceleration and braking. Minimize idling: Switch off the engine when waiting at traffic lights or for short durations. Plan your trips: Combine errands and avoid unnecessary travel. Maintain proper tire pressure: Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance, leading to higher fuel consumption. Drive smoothly: Avoid harsh acceleration and sudden braking. Regular maintenance: Ensure scheduled servicing and maintenance are performed to keep the engine running optimally. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs): Q1: Does the Honda Elevate CVT live up to its claimed fuel efficiency in city conditions? A1: The tested fuel efficiency in city conditions falls slightly short of the claimed mileage, with an observed figure of 12.60 kmpl. Q2: How does the Honda Elevate CVT perform on the highway in terms of fuel efficiency? A2: The tested fuel efficiency on the highway closely aligns with the claimed figure, recording an impressive 16.40 kmpl. Q3: What can owners expect in terms of fuel efficiency for mixed driving conditions? A3: In mixed driving conditions, the Honda Elevate CVT is estimated to offer a fuel efficiency of around 14 kmpl. Q4: Why might the fuel efficiency of a car vary for different drivers? A4: Individual factors such as driving style, road conditions, and the overall state of the vehicle can influence fuel efficiency, leading to variations among drivers.

Exploring the Prowess of Honda Cars on Indian Roads
When it comes to choosing a sedan or SUV in India, Honda has secured its position as a reliable and popular choice among discerning consumers. Renowned for its quality and diverse range of offerings, Honda has not only captured the hearts of Indian car enthusiasts but has also solidified its global reputation over decades. In this article, we'll take a closer look at some of the top Honda sedans and SUVs that are revving up the roads in India.
The Versatile Honda Amaze
The Honda Amaze emerges as a cost-effective sedan, catering to both city commuting and long-distance travel. Available in Lunar Silver Metallic, Radiant Red Metallic, Platinum White Pearl, Golden Brown Metallic, and Meteoroid Grey Metallic, the Amaze combines style with practicality. Boasting 420 liters of boot space, touch sensor-equipped chrome handles, contoured bucket seats, and a multi-function tilt-enabled steering wheel, the Amaze is designed for a comfortable driving experience.
It comes in both petrol and diesel variants, with the petrol model featuring a 1.2-liter i-VTEC engine. The three available variants – Honda Amaze E, Honda Amaze S, and Honda Amaze VX – cater to different preferences and budgets, making the Amaze a versatile choice for a wide range of consumers.
Classic meets Modern: Honda City (5th Gen)
The iconic Honda City, first launched in 1981, continues to impress Indian consumers with its 5th Gen model. This sedan seamlessly blends classic elements with modern features. Available in six vibrant colors – Meteoroid Metallic Grey, Golden Brown Metallic, Platinum White Pearl, Radiant Red Metallic, Obsidian Blue Pearl, and Lunar Silver Metallic – the City offers a luxurious interior, complete with ambient lights, soft-touch door lining, and premium leather upholstery on spacious contemporary seats.
The 4+1-seater sedan promises not just style but also performance, with a high-performance engine designed for better combustion, reduced friction, and lower emissions. The Honda City (5th Gen) is a testament to Honda's commitment to evolving with the times while preserving the essence of its classic models.
Embracing the Future: Honda City e:HEV
For environmentally conscious consumers, the Honda City e:HEV offers a hybrid variant in the same striking colors as its traditional counterpart. With the global shift towards electric vehicles (EVs), the e:HEV presents a compelling option for those looking to embrace eco-friendly mobility. Governments often provide incentives for purchasing EVs, making them not just environmentally responsible but economically advantageous.
Before transitioning to an EV, it's essential to understand the types of electric vehicles available and how to maintain them for optimal performance. The Honda City e:HEV combines the reliability of the traditional City model with a hybrid powertrain, offering a seamless blend of fuel efficiency and eco-conscious driving.
Honda Elevate : Elevating SUV Experience
If an SUV aligns more with your personality or lifestyle, the Honda Elevate, launched in 2023, is a model worth considering. Available in seven colors and three dual-tone options, the Elevate not only focuses on aesthetics but also prioritizes safety. Equipped with a front camera and collision-mitigating technology, along with a rear camera providing a multi-angle view for parking assistance, the Elevate is designed to make driving and parking a breeze.
As of now, the Elevate is exclusively available in a petrol version, catering to those who prefer the robust performance of a petrol engine in their SUV. To enhance the overall driving experience, Honda offers a range of accessories, allowing consumers to personalize their Elevate and make it uniquely their own.
Why Honda Vehicles Deserve Your Consideration
Choosing a new car is a significant financial decision, and Honda ensures that your investment is well worth it. The availability of a wide range of accessories allows you to tailor your vehicle to meet your specific expectations and preferences. Additionally, Honda cars come equipped with Honda Sensing, a comprehensive system designed to minimize the risk of accidents and assist drivers in maintaining safe driving practices.
One notable advantage of opting for a Honda vehicle is the 10-year warranty, providing peace of mind and reflecting the brand's confidence in the durability and reliability of their cars. This extended warranty period is a testament to Honda's commitment to customer satisfaction and the longevity of their vehicles.
Navigating the New Car Journey
While bringing a new car home is undoubtedly an exciting adventure, it's crucial to ensure that all necessary formalities are completed accurately. A registration certificate is a key document that must be kept with you every time you drive the car. Additionally, obtaining motor insurance and a Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate is mandatory. PUC certificates, issued by authorized centers, need to be renewed on time to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
In conclusion, Honda's lineup of sedans and SUVs in India offers a diverse range of options, catering to different preferences, needs, and environmental considerations. Whether you opt for the efficient Honda Amaze, the classic Honda City, the eco-friendly Honda City e:HEV, or the robust Honda Elevate, you can trust in Honda's legacy of quality and innovation on the Indian roads. Consider the 10-year warranty, Honda Sensing features, and the array of accessories available to make an informed decision when adding a Honda to your driveway. Happy driving!
