In January 1904, Homer arrived in Homosassa, a village on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Declaring the fishing there “the best in America," the artist-outdoorsman also capitalized on the activity’s creative potential, as he had during previous angling expeditions in the Adirondacks and Canada. This watercolor features a channel bass, whose sparkling scales Homer likened to "a $20 gold piece." In a nod to the Homosassa River’s famously clear, shallow water, the artist surrounded the fish with layers of transparent lapis-blue wash. The luminous jewel tones belie harsher realities: the bass appears to have been "foul-hooked" (caught outside the mouth), its connection to the line precarious. Glass bottles in the river amplify the sense of human encroachment on the environment, while also providing an indication of scale.

Homosassa Inshore Fishing Report with Captain Toney: Back on the Water hunting Trout, Redfish and Snook

I'm so happy to get back on the water and I'm sure most anglers on the Big Bend are too. We're not going to talk about the last few weeks being a bust, we'll save that for campfire stories later in life. The cooler mornings have dropped our water temps down into the 70's and that will get the fish biting. To target trout, I've been using a popping cork rig with a watermelon red flake soft plastic on a 1/8oz. jighead. Another good bait in calm conditions is a nose-hooked glow jerk bait or a topwater plug if the floating debris is not too bad. The type of bottom I find most of my trout on is hard bottom withrock grass, sponges, and corals. The best bite has been the outgoing tide. For redfish, check the outside keys on the incoming tide. Two things I look for when I'm poling my vessel are lots of mullet and big sharks. The mullet and reds like to congregate around the same keys and big sharks love to eat redfish. This is the time of year when a gold spoon like the Eppinger Rex will shine like no other bait for redfish. I like using a spoon as a search bait because you can cast it a mile and the further away you can stay off a school of reds, the better chances you have in not spooking the fish to another location. Snook are starting to move in towards the deeper creek and rivers from the Gulf. Good spots to catch them are drop-offs on a rocky point, the trough on an oyster bar, and dilapidated docks on therivers. Jigs and suspending twitch baits will get the bite and I always up my leader to 30lb. fluorocarbon to stand a better chance of a large fish wearing through the line. I've had some luck also using cut ladyfish for bait. The incoming tide will be very early morning or late afternoon this weekend.
