“A mark was on him from the day's delight, so that all his life, when April was a thin green and the flavor of rain was on his tongue, an old wound would throb and a nostalgia would fill him for something he could not quite remember.” ― Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, The Yearling

With warmer weather and warming water, look for the fish that huddled from the cold last week in our rivers to move back west toward the deeper creeks and shallow flats of our inshore bays. For trout and redfish, work the edges of deeper water because shallow water will heat up during the mid part of the day. Dark bottoms, especially on the south facing shorelines where the southern sun is hitting first, are good places to find fish. Soft plastic jerk baits and shallow suspending plugs are the best baits. The nearshore rocks are the best places to catch sheepshead. Starting at 8- out to 12-feet, rocks with a high profile will be holding fish. I will drift over the rock if the water is clear and see if there are sheepshead on it. Then I set up with my anchor within casting distance. Sometimes there is an algae bloom, and our visibility is not good, but the fishing can see. In an algae bloom situation large profile rocks are easier to spot. For bait, I like to use a live 3" shrimp with the tail pinched off that is threaded onto a 1/8 oz. chartreuse jig head. Do not cast directly onto the rock but just off the edge. Incoming tide is best. Incoming high tide will be midday this weekend. Best winter fishing in florida
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d080573e6942350b493861d6356e9ae6/64f263ed87ee34b2-da/s540x810/72091ac87d972bfd32d4e917218db137a3d6ebff.jpg)
Some of the best winter fishing in the US is available in Florida. Anglers seeking to escape the cold and catch a variety of species frequently travel to the Keys, Tampa Bay, and Crystal River/Homosassa. The waterways of the Keys are still alive with game, including barracuda, jacks, and tarpon, and the weather is pleasant. There are chances to catch trout, redfish, flounder, and black drum in the Gulf of Mexico or on grass flats around Tampa Bay. Spring-fed waters at Crystal River/Homosassa are warm all year round, making it possible for anglers to target bass, snook, and snapper. In Florida, the best species to target in the winter are redfish, snook, Spanish mackerel, permit, tarpon, bonefish, and sailfish. For those looking for a winter fishing trip, the state is a great choice due to its varied fishing grounds and pleasant climate that persists throughout the year.

The Spider Monkeys Seem Happy with Their New Home
Friends There is a small island in the middle of the Homosassa River that has been the home to some spider monkeys (Ateles spp) since the 1960s. The original group of monkeys had been imported for use in polio research, but when they were no longer needed, they went to a number of different zoos including the one that is located in Homosassa Springs, where I worked for several years before…

Channel Bass
Winslow Homer American 1904
In January 1904, Homer arrived in Homosassa, a village on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Declaring the fishing there “the best in America," the artist-outdoorsman also capitalized on the activity’s creative potential, as he had during previous angling expeditions in the Adirondacks and Canada. This watercolor features a channel bass, whose sparkling scales Homer likened to "a $20 gold piece." In a nod to the Homosassa River’s famously clear, shallow water, the artist surrounded the fish with layers of transparent lapis-blue wash. The luminous jewel tones belie harsher realities: the bass appears to have been "foul-hooked" (caught outside the mouth), its connection to the line precarious. Glass bottles in the river amplify the sense of human encroachment on the environment, while also providing an indication of scale.

It's been a long time since this many game fish have moved into our coastal spring-fed rivers in the last quarter of winter. I would say that this is a testament that our state's trout regulations are working on the Big Bend. There was a time when trout were closed during the month of February and I always wondered why during the shortest month of the year the trout were not spawning and it was as cold as a well digger's butt crack. After fishing through this past cold snap and catching trout all the way up to the head of the river, I now understand. All the fish are escaping the cold Gulf and stacking up where anglers can catch them from their docks, putting your boat in and floating without cranking the motor and some people filling their freezers because of the easy fishing. Now I understand the old rule but it's not as common anymore that we have these extended cold snaps. Using glow jigs like the D.O.A. CAL Shad and working rocky points throughout the rivers you will find fish. I like to use a vertical jigging motion; the bite is a small tick in the line. Even though the bite may seem light, stay with the pull of the line because it could be a nice trout or redfish; they seem to fight light at first then put on the power once they know they are hooked. The sheepshead bite was good this week in six to eight feet of water with live shrimp. The water was dirty, but I've found that's best for sheepshead. Incoming tide will be early morning and late afternoon.
