In his award winning travel & circus memoir, The Grand Gypsy, my grandfather writes about Prague and his stepmother, Olga Jung, who was from an old Czechoslovakian circus family from Bohemia. ——————————————————— “When we were children, Olga used to tell us stories of the early circus days in Prague. She spoke of a big gathering of show people every year around the end of October when the show season was ending. Performers from all over Bohemia would get together in a big hotel restaurant in Prague called the Drahanavsky, which had a huge beer garden and dance floor. The gathering at the Drahanavsky was a big event, and all kinds of circus performers, carnival people, and Gypsies would attend. It had a special significance for families with unmarried boys and girls because many of them would meet there, become acquainted, and possibly engaged or married. The elders handled the marriage arrangements, like transactions of property between the bride and groom, considering how much gold the bride would bring into the family, or perhaps, how many horses the groom would give in exchange for her. Sometimes the gathering grew to about two hundred people, and there was always some type of celebration going on each evening. Nearly every night, too, someone would get drunk and start an argument, which led to a struggle and a fight. I’m at the Sarrasani Circus! In 1909, my grandfather went to see the show and wrote about his enchanted experience in his award winning memoir, The Grand Gypsy. Two short excerpts below. -——————————————————— “Once, when we were playing in a small town in Austria, my father called off one of our performances so we could go see the famous Sarrasani Circus in nearby Graz. I was amazed by their big circus tent with its elaborate one hundred and fifty-foot long front entrance, all lit up with thousands of colored electric light bulbs. I was also amazed to see so many horses, elephants, tigers, lions, and star performers in their beautiful costumes. I was thirteen, and for a long time after that, I remained enchanted from the visit. I dreamed of this big circus with its color and excitement day and night. Although I was born and raised in the circus of my father and had trained very hard with many different acts, it wasn’t until we visited the Sarrasani Circus that I made up my mind to become a great performer.” ———————————————————- My grandfather eventually realized his dream to perform with Sarrasani in 1924. ———-———————————————— “WHILE I was at the height of my career in Europe, I had the opportunity to realize my childhood dream of joining the great international Sarrasani Circus. The circus was gathering a company of performers for a South American tour, but I was still serving under contract with the Krone Circus as foot juggler and bareback rider. I went to Mr. Krone and asked if he would release me as I was twenty-eight years old and still very eager to experience the world beyond Europe.
