Geography Class: Getting Started in your Homeschool Classroom.
My kids do not like geography. Day one right out of the gate I was asked “Do we have to do this?” So, I knew early on that I would have to find a way to make geography fun. Buy how does one make geography fun? I like to think that I am a relatively smart person, but I know nothing about geography except for North, South, East and West and Such. I knew I was going to need help.
I started this journey into homeschool geography by looking for a good geography-based workbook that would cover what I wanted my kids to learn this year and not break the bank (and of course not bore them to tears). We settled on a workbook titled “50 Great States”. It is considered to be for 1st grade, but neither of my kids had a base knowledge of the different states or the lay out of the country that they had picked up in their previous school years. William almost certainly had heard about it at some point buy had retained little to any of it. The workbook contains a small (yet fun) 1/2 page lesson with interesting facts and puzzles to make the kids think about a fact of each state. I discovered this workbook on a random shopping trip with my daughter to our local Wal-Mart. Unfortunately I have been unable to find it again online. I have discovered that it can be ordered for in store delivery on Walmart.com. It can be ordered --> HERE.
We also purchased some basic supplies. I started by purchasing a Map of the United States. I purchased ours at our local Dollar Tree for $1.00. Important Information: I verified before purchasing that the dollar map would included important features such as North, South, East and West, Time Zones and such. We also purchased a dry erase world map for our later use.
The small lessons (in our workbook) are entertaining and a good place to start introducing the kids to the individual states. William and Jackie enjoy attempting to memorize the state birds of the states to remember in a quiz later on, we reward these with point to be used in our classroom store. Want to know more about our classroom store? Get more information --> HERE. I am supplementing the small fun lessons in our workbook with individual state videos from “Homeschool Pop” on YouTube. You can find their amazing Homeschool Video Collection --> HERE. If you are going to Homeschool I highly recommend their videos. They have been a godsend to me this year.
