Samhain approaches! 🌟 One of the reasons I love Samhain so much is how many different traditions there are that combine my two favorite things – food and divination. Try some of these at your Halloween celebration this year. 🌟 Peel an apple in one long strip and toss the peel over your shoulder. Its shape will form the first letter of your future spouse’s name. 🌟 Roast two hazelnuts near the fire – one for you and one for your beloved. If the nuts jump away from the heat it’s a bad sign, but if they roast quietly it’s a good match. 🌟 Bake a barmbrack – an Irish bread with raisins and sultanas. Hide assorted items in it and serve portions at random. What you find in your piece tells your future – i.e. a ring means marriage, a coin means wealth. 🌟 Or, bake a batch of salty oatmeal scones. Eat yours in 3 bites and go to bed in silence, without drinking any water. Do you believe in magic? Your ancestors definitely did. No matter where you’re from, if you trace your lineage back far enough you will find a daily interaction with fairy folk, omens, and ceremony. Underpinning all of that is Animism – the belief that every creature, plant, and stone in this world has a soul. If that’s true, then we humans are intimately connected with everything around us and everything that happens has a meaning, and everyone belongs. I choose Animism as the organizational principle of my life, because it’s inclusive, it’s simple, it connects me to my ancestors, and it rings with a joyful truth. Magic is everyone’s birthright, we just need support in finding authentic, meaningful ways to connect with it. . 🌟 For me, those ways look like Divination, Daily Offerings to my local nature spirits, Mindful self-care rituals, Charm Work, and communing with Plant Spirits.
