In the past I had two big local charities approach me and commit to fund our homeless soup kitchen operations in full. They never delivered despite repeatedly making contact, confirming and going off radar. Thankfully, I never fell for it and wasn’t found sitting on the window ledge waiting on them to green light this hugely necessary outreach venture. I don’t work that way or this humble project would have been waiting patiently for a help that would never have materialised. These guys may be handling millions of pounds of donations but they don’t have a clue when it comes to what motivates and drives the grassroots when it comes to delivering community projects. They are a reflection of many small community teams that are struggling for money but have a terrier like spirit to do what’s best for the people. They work with massive money and pounds and shillings are not really of interest. But they sometimes throw scraps to the paupers as it represents bad PR otherwise. They don’t stay awake at night worrying about where £50 will come from for the next homeless feed. Domestic causes are not glamorous enough even though even though the majority of donors are from that demographic. Sadly they are really out of touch. The philosophy has always been to make a sincere intention for the purpose at hand, have full faulty and take those steps. It’s served me well with so many well wishers from friends, family and colleagues piling on some phenomenal support. This team has no funds in the account but each member is consistent, determined, dogged and single minded in their desire to make a difference. Clint was sleeping rough on and off for years but now lives in a hostel which provides him with stability and independence. He still has lots of personal demons which he wrestles with every day and say’s kindness and tolerance can help people who are facing hard times. Clint is best pleased with his @roughsleeperco homeless pack. He needs size 11 sandals as he cannot wear shoes for to heavily blistered feet. We all know city people are busy people and Londoners often get stereotyped as grumpy, less than friendly folk who have little time to stop and admire the finer details. Experience has taught me that homeless friends crave company and often appreciate a hello and friendly chat. I met Jim and his dog Alfie today and he say’s every human interaction he has helps lift his spirits and for a short while makes him forget any troubles he may be experiencing. Many rough sleepers feel invisible and a few kind words are very uplifting and make a big, positive difference to their day and life on the streets. There are reports of people sleeping in cars after being evicted from hostels. I met one person in a similar situation today in Hackney. It was enough for him to hit the bottle after being teetotal for three years. People just don’t wake up homeless, there is always a trigger.
