Self correction: I have been referring to some of my pullets as Wyandottes but they're WELSUMMERS. doh! Don't know how that got mixed up in my head. 🙄 Anyway, I got my first Welsummer egg today, which means 5 out of my 6 new girls are now laying. 🤗 And because there's always something going on with my animals, I've had to move my two frizzle Easter Eggers into the quarantine coop. Petal (white one) has a nasty habit of plucking her newly growing feathers, making herself bleed. Her sisters, attracted to the red colour, will then peck at her until she has an open wound. This is all happening on her poor little tushy!! So I pulled her out with her sister because a/ Dahlia has never shown any interest in the wound, and b/ we've had some cool nights and Petal needs another chicken to stay warm overnight. I wanted to bring her inside to nurse but we're currently nursing one of our snakes who went through surgery on Tuesday, and the smell of a live chicken will make her impossible to handle without being constantly bitten. And she is STRONG. So the quarantine coop is the best I could do! Sharing 7 minute breakfast eggs. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Where we live, it’s the altitude a seven minute egg is perfect. After the boiling for seven minutes the eggs get a cold bath. Just long enough to halt the cooking process. We have urban chickens so I know the process of egg production. If you do you know too. I still think it’s a pretty good process for adding animal protein to our diet. Freshest ingredients, least intervention, best flavor. It's been awhile since I have updated you on my chickens and oh my do I have an update for you! Currently I am in a battle with Eleanor. She has gone broody again and been broody for about 2 weeks now. No, I haven't let her be broody, she is just so stubborn! I have tried removing her from the nesting box, blocking off the box and nest, ice packs, distracting with treats and a dip in cold water. Nothing has worked!!!! Well ontop of being stubborn she has also become mean and started picking on Penny again. So Penny is stressed and not laying. Blue shelled dippy eats for lunch ! Yes we did buy these organic eggs - but it’s helped me decide to add a few other chickens to our little flock - so we have rainbow eggs !! I d like some of these pale blue / green eggs - and some dark brown ones Easter eggs ones ( not chocolate eggs - unless you know a chicken that lays choc eggs - then I m there !!) .. . Happy Friday! Let me introduce you properly to my latest (and greatest) Fluffy Butt. This is Fat Marie. She’s a sweet bird, but gives best stink eye ever. All the other girls are intimidated by her because she’s so huge! (Notice how ALL the other hennies give her wide berth a wide berth. She’s a Red Star, which is a sex-linked breed. This means you can tell sex at birth based on color. She’s 3 and apparently her laying skills have diminished, but I believe her eggs will be brown should she grace us with one.
