Een van de mooiste museumgebouw en van Nederland is het pand van het stedelijk museum in Schiedam. Ondanks dat de kinderen de tentoonstellingen minder konden waarderen, was de entree naar het museum en de binnenkomst wel prachtig. Het museum is gevestigd in het in 1789 geopende Sint-Jacobs Gasthuis. Al in de 13e eeuw was er sprake van een gasthuis op deze locatie. Gravin Aleida van Henegouwen liet het rond 1272 openen en het was een opvang voor zieken en bejaarden (wat je in die tijd al rond je 40e was). In 1786 werd het gesloopt en werd dit, door Jan Giudici ontworpen, gebouw opgetrokken. Het museum zelf werd in 1899 in Schiedam geopend en verhuisde in 1940 naar dit gebouw. In de collectie bevindt zich veel moderne kunst, waaronder stukken van Karel Appel. Momenteel is het museum gesloten vanwege een renovatie. ————- This beautiful building is the “stedelijk museum Schiedam”. This museum has a collection of modern art, including work by Karel Appel. Although our children weren’t very enthousiastic about the museum, they were impressed by the building. The museum is located in the “Sint-Jacobs Gasthuis”. A gasthuis is a place were the sick and elderly could stay. The original one was opened here around 1272 by countess Aleida van Henegouwen. A nice footnote; at that time you were elderly around the age of 40. In 1789 a new building, designed by Jan Giudici, was opened. In 1940 the museum moved to this building.
