Happy Anniversary Little Caesars!
Little Caesars was established at 32594 Cherry Hill Rd.
May 8th 1959, in Garden City, Mi.

Mike Ilitch played second base for the Tigers and a couple of other teams beginning in 1952.....thanks to a knee injury, he had to retire in 1955.

Little Caesars' history says it all began as a love story in 1954, when Ilitch and Marian Bayoff were thrown together on a blind date by Mike's dad. Fortunately, they hit it off, and it was just a few months later when they married. The two of them pooled their life savings in order to open their own business: a pizza restaurant.
1962 Little Caesars first franchise opened in Warren, called “Little Caesars Pizza Treat”. This featured the “Little Caesar guy eating a slice of pizza” logo. From there, Little Caesars really began to branch out and became the fastest-growing pizza chain in America.
That single mom-and-pop pizza shop grew into the third largest pizza chain in the world with stores in more than 27 countries and territories worldwide, including in each of the 50 U.S. states.
The growth of Little Caesars helped Mike and Marian create other leading brands in the food, sports and entertainment industries.
The couple purchased the Detroit Red Wings in 1982. While the team was known as the Dead Wings at the time, Mike and Marian believed they were a sleeping giant and immediately took charge to turn the team around. By 1997, the Red Wings won their first Stanley Cup in 42 years, and they went on to win three more.

Mike encouraged the Ford family to bring the Detroit Lions back to Detroit from the suburbs and build a new stadium right next door to the ballpark by relinquishing a portion of land to make way for the new stadium. The new football venue allowed Detroit to host the Super Bowl in 2006.
Today - true to Mike and Marian's vision for a bustling downtown area - the Ilitch organization is developing The District Detroit, a dynamic urban destination that provides a dense neighborhood experience featuring a variety of developments alongside Detroit's premier sports and entertainment venues. This includes the new highly innovative and state-of-the-art Little Caesars Arena, home of the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Pistons, and the recipient of the 2018 Sports Facility of the Year award, presented by Sports Business Journal.
Throughout Mike’s life, he remained true to his hometown and was a zealous supporter of Detroit, working tirelessly to help it prosper and to bring pride to the city. In 1988, Mike and Marian purchased the neglected Fox Theatre and carefully restored it to its original 1928 splendor.

One year later, they moved the Little Caesars world headquarters from the suburbs into the newly renovated Fox Office Center adjacent to the restored theatre. This was during a time when many businesses were fleeing the city.

Mike displayed further commitment to the city he loved when he purchased the Detroit Tigers in 1992 and built a new state-of-the-art ballpark for the team. Remembering his early years as a minor league baseball player with the Tigers, he did everything in his power to make the fan experience at Comerica Park a memorable one.

Mike and Marian believed passionately in giving back to the community. As the parents of children who played hockey, the couple wanted to provide other children the opportunity to play the sport as well. So, they established the Little Caesars Amateur Hockey Program in 1968, and it has provided opportunities for tens of thousands of youngsters to play the great game of hockey over the years. Hundreds have gone on to play at colleges, universities and in the National Hockey League.
Inspired by the story of a veteran returning to civilian life, Mike founded the Little Caesars Veterans Program in 2006. The program provides honorably discharged veterans with financial incentives and other support to help them open a Little Caesars franchise.
Since 2000, grants and giving from Marian and Mike, the Ilitch companies and its charitable affiliates have totaled $220 million. This includes Marian and Mike's personal gifts of nearly $50 million to Detroit's Wayne State University - $8 million to the Department of Surgery and $40 million to build a new home for the Mike Ilitch School of Business, prominently located on Woodward Avenue.

In the years since the Kira case, with Near at the helm, and L and Watari long since buried in the plot beside the west wing, what was once called The Wammy’s House decays.
It takes seven years to fully dismantle the program. The youngest children need to find foster homes or new families or other, carefully vetted, well-funded programs to matriculate into. The older children are graduated and placed in the best universities around the world—set to become the everyday successes of tomorrow. Tsinghua, Juilliard, Cairo, LSE, UCLA, Tohoku, ETH Zurich, Oxford. The residual funds are allocated appropriately to make sure that everyone is well taken care of. Study funds and stipends, merit grants and insurance.
Personally, Near sees to the edge cases. Kids who, according to the headmasters and the instructors, never lived up to the promise of their aptitude testing—the weak, the attention deficit, the headcases. He speaks to each one—Do you want to live alone? Do you want to learn a skill and work? Do you want to go back to where they found you? What are your medical needs.
It’s dispassionate work that he takes on in his limited spare time. The dismantling of the program was not necessarily his idea, but he saw it to the end.
By 2024, L Lawliet has been dead for almost two decades. Enough time for a child to grow and have a child of their own. Near has no children—will never and can never—and finds this fact amusing.
At exactly 13:23 GMT on 21 October, 2024, Near celebrates a homecoming of sorts.
The grounds have been left to wither. The estate is unsellable—or, nobody wants to bother selling it to a Silicon valley expat or a London financier’s portfolio. After all, it was a school. Renovations would be required.
When Near is driven into town and left there—”I’ll get there from here, thank you,”—he overhears, in a quiet cafe, that the children think the mansion on the hill is haunted. “Halloween” is an American holiday that is not celebrated in England. The evening is foggy and limpid. The sky threatens an afternoon rain.
He arrives at the wrought iron gates at 15:13. He knows there is nothing for him, here. But he’s already been given this time to pay his respects. A holiday of sorts. Never in the past twenty years has he kneeled before graves. He expects he won’t today, either. There is nobody here to pay respects to. Mello is buried in an unmarked plot in a quiet district of Tokyo. The stake on the eastern edge of the property in Winchester—In Memoriam, Mihael Keehl—is growing moss. Near stops by this landmark, first. Many colleagues and coworkers, commanding officers and cadets, have died since Mello. Near has not kept track of many of their names.
Mello’s memorial has not been cared for. They stopped sending groundskeepers to the property in 2019. Near carries a book in one hand, his plastic cane in the other. He stares at the spike, leans on the arm brace, and considers the most respectful acknowledgment of this memorial. This isn’t what he came here to do. Mihael Keehl—no, Mello—has been dead for more than a decade. In that time, Near has solved more than five hundred cases. A-Kira. The Hong Kong murders. The Dubai trafficking ring. A few stray Death Notes.
In the years elapsed, the loss has simmered. Like soup, which Near has seen others make (his current boyfriend is fond of cutting the mirepoix into centimeter by centimeter cubes) the thought of Mello is turbid and wafts around him constantly. However, there is no room for the what if. There is only the course the universe bent, that day.
Near, in his own way, has paid his respect. Said his thank yous, if he owes any thanks. He bows, as far as he can manage, to the spiritless grave. He does not kneel.
In Tokyo, Mello’s bones are likely rusting, rotting in the temperate soil. Were he buried here, at 51° latitude, he may still have his skin, in death. But this is unimportant. He would not wish to be buried here.
Near bows, and says two prayers for the dead. He knows a Latin version as well as a Hebrew. To this day, he does not know if Mello died religious—died believing in any gods beyond those he had met and been scorned by.
“Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis.”
“יִתְגַּדַּל וְיִתְקַדַּשׁ שְׁמֵהּ רַבָּא.”
He adds a hymn Mello might have sung for his parents in the dialect he most likely spoke before his life as a successor began.
“Святой Юмо, Святой Куатле, Святой Колыдымо, мемнам серлаге.”
Near has been told not to pass judgment on the irrationality of faith, so he has learned the hymns. The grass grows tall around Mello’s stake.
One year, Near had gotten angry about it. Back when he was twenty one or twenty two—inconsequential—and awake for forty hours, Near had raged at a silent room over it, and never again. And the anger was not about the death, nor about Near’s inheritance, his duty. Not Mello’s mistakes nor his sacrifice. Likely, looking back with the hindsight and wisdom of a man ten years older, Near images he experienced as much grief as he was capable of, that night. There was no grave to stand over, and there was no body, in the small room in Cape Canaveral when Near was twenty one. No surviving images of him. No letters nor notebooks. The bout of rage, insanity, grief (he cautions to call it) was triggered by a smell (something sweet burning), of all things. And had subsided with the yellow dawn.
The frustration was likely at being left alone. Of his own inefficacy in his first trial, and the acknowledgement that a man like Mello had deserved to live to see more days. Had deserved better than a pine wood stake on a lonely corner of the grounds of the school where he was raised and an unmarked plot in Adachi City, Tokyo.
Next, Near walks slowly towards the house itself. A jackrabbit sprints across the lawn in front of him. A hawk circles to the north.

This all-new sandbox experience elevates the home renovation gaming experience to new heights. Historic Gotham: Part Two

Novick Building: The Novick Building was built in the early 1800s and was part of Alan Wayne's plans to expand Gotham City into a more modern metropolis. It's one of the tallest landmarks in the Old Gotham district. The Novick Building has been used for various purposes during its existence. It was once the home of a newspaper agency, a library, a bank and temporarily housed the Labor Union before they relocated to the West End. It is now used as an office space for various small- time companies and start-ups. I once considered using the empty dome at the top of the building as the location for what later became the Belfry base but decided against it as there are no easy access points and renovations would have been too noticeable. Notes: The Novick Building provides a good vantage point of the Courthouse and City Hall. Can use it to supervise transport for trials.

Gotham City Post Office: The Gotham City Post Office has been open for more than a century, handling everything from letters to ship cargo. It houses over thirty employees and sends out hundreds of mailmen and women across the city every day. The Riddler once used the post office for an intricate scheme using letters, since they can't be as easily traced as digital information. But the workers at the post office went on strike, which made his whole plan fall apart. I later found the Riddler at Robinson Plaza trying to catch birds to train them to be carrier pigeons. I've since made a contact at the post office who warns me of any suspicious activity taking place there. Along with my other contact at the Dixon Docks, we've managed to find and destroy many packages of contraband. Notes: All of my non-essential packages are sent to the post office under the pseudonym Jack Shaw.

Statue of Justice: The Statue of Justice was originally commissioned by the Kane family not long after the foundation of Gotham City. It's located on a small hill, where it oversees Tricorner Island, and is visible all the way from the Kane bridge. The Statue is blindfolded and is holding a sword and scale. Some say it's because it is casting judgment on the city, while others claim it's protecting it. It's become a popular tourist attraction and many shops, as well as the visitor center, have opened their doors on the plaza. Anarky once attempted to topple the statue for a political statement, but Dick and I managed to apprehend him and deactivate the bomb he had planted. The mayor has tried to bring tourists back with promotional events and festivals, but many have been reticent to return since the incident.

St. Swithuns Church: The St. Swithuns Church was built near the shores of the Gotham City Bay to protect ships coming to Port Adams and the Miller Harbor in the 19th century. It withstood wars and storms alike and was temporarily turned into a makeshift clinic after a hurricane caused a cruise ship to crash nearby. Gotham City General Hospital was overflowing with patients and the nuns of St. Swithuns volunteered to treat the survivors who were still being rescued. They saved the lives of over fifty people, including Oswald's aunt, Miranda Cobblepot. Because of this, the church was named a historical site. Some sailors today still go to St. Swithuns before leaving to pray for safe passage. My father would do the same thing to reassure his crew when came the time to test new ship prototypes.

Join an ANC Committee! 
ANC6B has committees that handle a lot of the regular work of the Commission. Currently, I have openings for Resident Member status on the Public Safety and Parks & Recreation Spaces committees. I also have openings for anyone who wants to be an “alternate” (that is, all the privileges except for voting) on any of our committees: Alcohol & Cannabis Regulation, Planning & Zoning, Transportation, Public Safety, Parks & Recreation Spaces, and Southeast Library. You would be committing to attending an online meeting once per month, usually at 7 p.m.  If that sounds like something you’d like to try or if you'd like more information, email me! 
Watkins Playground Meeting January 30 
As I’ve noted before, DC Parks & Rec is gathering community input so that they can renovate the playground, basketball court, football field, and splash park at Watkins. (The owners of the Washington Capitals will be simultaneously upgrading the roller hockey rink.) The department plans to unveil its initial design as part of a meeting at Watkins Elementary on Thursday, January 30, from 6 - 7:30 p.m.
The DC Jail Renovation
The jail at 19th & Massachusetts Ave SE will get a very thorough renovation that is scheduled from 2027-2034. While the jail is in Ward 7, the city is promising to keep ANC 6B in the loop because we’re so close by. The early designs are very promising – by making better use of the land, the new facilities should be big enough to solve overcrowding, but also move a half-block further away from the homes on 19th St. For all the details, go to https://newcorrectionalfacility.dc.gov/ .
Crime Plummeted in 2024 
Our local police district captain, Adam Crist, reported at our meeting that crime plummeted in 2024, in a mirror image of the 2023 crime spike.  Violent crime dropped 38% on the year in ANC 6B. Captain Crist credited the success to the deterrent effects of a huge increase in conviction rates and increased patrol hours, and said improved police-community relations has improved the quality of evidence that police are gathering.  For more crime stats, see https://crimecards.dc.gov/ .
Potomac Ave Metro Station Canopy Construction 
Over the next year or so, Potomac Ave. station will finally get an escalator canopy, like all of the other underground stations. WMATA heard neighbors’ complaints about how the first phase of construction was keeping them up at night and has committed to shifting 80% of the nighttime work into daytime hours. WMATA has also upgraded its “sound blanket” and jackhammers to reduce total noise.
