I love my little Super Power!SAF au but I change my mind on how to do it so often it's hard to actually write it as a story. Here's some bullet points about it if anyone is interested:
General info
Maybe Canon Era? Maybe sci-fi mixed with Canon Era? Maybe 80s? Unclear at this time, in my brain it's a mix of all three
Very big X-Men influence because I'm a comics nerd, not based on the movies
Not necessarily specifically in marvel and there's no other hero stuff, just mutants basically, just people with weird genetics who got super powers
Pretty common in the universe for people with powers to get grabbed by organizations and pressured into working for them, or otherwise have their powers exploited, this is a big concern. There are also people who try to 'fix' people with powers and they are also a concern.
Mutants aren't a secret but they aren't very common so they try not to get discovered for fear of the previous point.
Powers usually come in during puberty and it is hard to tell if someone will have one prior to it activating. Powers can activate at a younger age if they are in an extremely stressful situation which can lead to problems.
Various governments have had programs working with powered people because they can do things no one else can, this involves espionage.
Cynthia Houston is a mutant who runs the American Secret Service Powered Division.
The leadership of the team is basically: Barb and Info look to Curt, Curt looks to Owen, Owen is a nuclear bomb that could explode at any time, and Tatiana tries to hold everything together.
Curt Mega
Curt's dad was an agent in the American Secret Service Powered Division and was good friends with Cynthia. He died in the line of duty and she stuck around in Curt's life like an aunt.
Grew up in Northern New Jersey with his mom. She probably doesn't have a power? But she definitely tries her best.
His power activated when he was in his teens during a baseball game when he destroyed a boy's hand accidentally. This was very traumatizing and lead to everything else to come.
He can control energy, specifically he can increase the levels of Kinetic or potential energy in an object, or switch something from potential energy to Kinetic Energy. Curt uses this by putting a lot of energy into metal balls and throwing them, tearing through things or causing explosions. He can make things explode by filling them with energy. (If you know the X-Man Gambit it is similar to Gambit)
Afraid of what he could do, Curt ran away from home as a teen and kind of went into hiding. He ended up getting caught by a bad organization that snatched up teen mutants to manipulate them from a younger age. There he met Owen, Barb, Info, and Tatiana.
They end up working together to escape and finding their way to Cynthia who takes to training them despite not really knowing how to Mom.
They form a group as adults where they work somewhat independently and somewhat for the American Secret Service.
Curt and Owen are together, the group knows, this is Fine
Owen Carvour
Owen is... constantly on the verge of exploding, everyone knows this but generally tries to ignore it because he does
What exactly happened in his background is uncertain for me at this time, only that he is an orphan who definitely watched at least his mother die. This stress triggered his powers to activate which did not help matters. He was probably 13 or so?
Owen is a powerful telepath, think like Jean Gray if you know who that is (the instability caused by the powers like Jean is a similarity). He has telekinesis and telepathy but only tells people he can manipulate perception which like, yeah technically that's true but that's because you're messing with their head telepathically. He refuses to accept that he has telepathy or telekinesis most of the time, and if he does accept he has it, insists he can't control it.
Right around when he was orphaned he got snatched by an organization that attempted to use his powers to their advantage, reading people's minds and stealing information using a machine. This damaged his psyche pretty bad and was traumatic. In an attempt to protect himself he kind of locked the powers they exploited out of his own reach and made himself forget they were there.
That organization is how he got to America and met the others. Generally just was Very Unwell when he got to Cynthia's and she did her best to help but like she isn't a telepath, he needs a telepath to fix the problems there and she doesn't know one.
Everyone kind of knows his issues are going to eventually explode either inwardly or outwardly but there isn't much that can be done other than Trying Their Best to support him.
He's honestly a bit scared of what he's capable of because he's accidentally killed people with his mind on more than one occasion and doesn't really know what he's doing about that.
Tatiana Slozhno
Pretty similar backstory, got taken by the KGB to be trained as an assassin, the fact that she has a power that benefits that was definitely part of it
They would test kids by putting them in situations that would trigger powers at a very early age which was how she got picked for the program
Her power is to manipulate projectiles, specifically bullets but it doesn't have to be, both in making them hit where she wants and to do cool trick things she decides. Electric bullet to shock someone instead of kill them, sleep bullet, scatter bullet, etc etc etc. She has the most control over her power out of all of them due to her getting it so young.
Ended up in America on a mission and escaped, and ended up captured by a different organization much to her chagrin. Met the others there, teamed up with them, decided to stick with them for safety.
Has a bit of a leadership role in the team because she's the only one who just about always has her head on straight. Owen is good at leading until he's having a Power Moment, then he is out of commission and Curt is freaking out to much to lead, so of course it's on her.
She loves these stupid idiots so much, she tries her best to keep everything together which results in a lot of pressure when the other two fall apart.
Barbara Larvernor
Barb knew Curt prior to them meeting in New York, they met at camp when they were younger. She decided she had a crush on him at camp to get other girls off her back about her being friends with a boy.
Her dad was never in the picture and her mom was neglectful. At one point her mom dropped her off at her grandparent's house for months without a word. She lived near the Mega's during that time and Mrs. Mega would often invite her over. She really wanted them to end up together much to their embarrassment.
Barb's power manifested when she was alone in her house working on a little invention. Basically she can put stuff together with any materials and make something that functions. With training and effort she can make it work exactly how she wants it to, even if it's made of shoe string and bubblegum. If she isn't careful it'll have chaotic and potentially disastrous results.
Her power being considered non-combative made her seem less valuable when she was captured by the organization with the others. That let her have more freedom to make things that allowed them to escape.
She looks to Curt as a leader but knows he can be an idiot so she looks to Tatiana if Curt's suggestions don't sound right.
Barb is the smartest one on the team and they all know it, she has a very valuable role on the team because of that. Curt's habit of not listening does cause problems and she tells him off.
When she figured out Curt and Owen liked each other, she dropped her 'crush' on Curt because it was obviously pointless and she didn't really like him. They tease her about it now.
Informant
Usually goes by Info, and uses varying pronouns.
They don't remember their original name, gender, or backstory because of their time captured by the organization. There is a theory that it was Owen's fault, that he'd had a Power Moment and Info got the brunt of it before the other three got captured.
It isn't clear who got there first because other Owen nor Info remember, but they were both definitely there years longer than the others.
Info is the only one with a visible mutation, when not shape-shifting they look like they're made of colorful plastic parts like Legos or something. They can stretch and change shape like they're made of plastic and can shape-shift to look like anyone they want.
They don't really blame Owen for whatever happened with their memories, considering it's just as possible the amnesia was a trauma response, there's no hard feelings there.
They also look to Curt for leadership because he's pretty good at that, until he isn't and is freaking out, at which point obviously Tatiana is in charge. Also everyone knows when Curt is in charge, Owen is actually in charge because Curt does what Owen suggests.
Unlike the others, they had no idea what their identity was before ending up at Cynthia's, and she has been unable to figure it out due to the change in their form when their power manifested. Because of this she had a new identity made for them so they could have some semblance of a life back and go to school and things.
Info is the only one Cynthia actually got legal custody of. Tatiana was not legally in the country and trying to sort that out was a problem so they just kept it on the down low. Barb and Curt both had families who didn't necessarily want to lose custody. Mrs. Mega ended up letting Curt stay with her for a while but he did end up moving home eventually (with the agreement that his friends could come too). Owen was also in the country illegally but for Different Reasons and tracking down his actual identity was almost as hard as Info's, so things were also hushed up for him.
Info occasionally joins the three on field missions but often they go under cover doing other things.

With her feet rooted on the ground and her voice steady, Colette Pichon Battle seems to be the type of person most of us would want nearby in a crisis. When she speaks about climate change displacing millions, she uses measured words to describe strategies to dismantle structural racism, build alliances in community, and provide legal services for equitable disaster recovery. As I listen to her TED Talk, I’m reminded of a cheer from my high school in coastal Alabama: “Rock, rock, rock, rock, steady, eddy, eddy, eddy, rock! Rock steady.” So I wasn’t surprised to learn she describes her superpower as “seeing patterns in chaos,” an apt skill for the organization she founded, the Gulf Coast Center for Law and Policy, now called Taproot Earth.
Working on the frontlines of climate disasters caused by hurricanes, sea level rise, and fossil fuel companies, she knows that recovery for industries has been quick, and recovery for communities has been slow. From Houston, Texas, to Pensacola, Florida, her work brings climate change to the community level, especially with women at the heart of neighborhoods and households.
“We found that the folks most willing to get to know each other were actually women,” she said in an interview with Reimagine. “When women talk about their communities, it’s sort of like women talking about their children . . . So a lot of the moral fabric and the moral movement of a family and of a community is done through the women.”
She and her staff used a meeting format called the People’s Movement Assembly, which involved Black, Latina, and Asian American women learning about each other’s lives and agreeing to reach a vision together. From there, groups of women followed through on actions, such as talking about the climate crisis and extractive industries with elected officials in Louisiana who needed the vote from people of color.
In Bayou Liberty, just north of New Orleans, Colette grew up in the house built by her grandfather, where her mother was born. There, water was a way of life: “The bayou is green and lush and all the things that equal bountiful life,” she told TED Radio, “But it is also watery and muddy. You can smell everything.”
She remembers the names of particular hurricanes along the Gulf Coast, much as I did growing up in Alabama. During the eye of the storm, family members would get into flat-bottomed boats called pirogues to check on neighbors before retreating to safety inside while the other band of the hurricane passed. But the water became unrecognizable given the severity of Hurricane Katrina. As an adult, Colette practiced law in Washington, DC, but after the destruction of Katrina, she vowed never to leave her beloved Gulf Coast again.
When she first saw the Louisiana flood maps at a community meeting, Colette says her life changed. The maps explained how the thirty-foot surge from Hurricane Katrina could flood her community as well as those in Mississippi and Alabama. She realized the land lost from sea level rise was the buffer to her own home—a buffer predicted to disappear. “I wasn’t alone at the front of the room,” she explained. “I was standing there with other members of south Louisiana’s communities—Black, Native, poor. We thought we were just bound by temporary disaster recovery, but we found that we were now bound by the impossible task of ensuring that our communities would not be erased by sea level rise due to climate change.
“I just assumed it would always be there. Land, trees, marsh, bayou. I just assumed it would be there as it had been for thousands of years,” she said. “I was wrong.” Knowing climate is predicted to displace more than 200 million people by the next century, Colette advocates for preparing for global migration by restructuring social and economic systems rooted in justice, such as investing in public hospitals before the impact of climate migration or additional storms like Hurricane Ida. It’s not like we don’t know what is coming, and Colette knows preparation is a life-and-death matter.
“Climate change is not the problem,” she said. “Climate change is the most horrible symptom of an economic system that has been built for a few to extract every precious value out of this planet and its people, from our natural resources to the fruits of our human labor.”
What holds clear and steady is her belief of what can be done now. “It’s already possible, y’all,” she often tells people, with the practical sense of someone who can get things done. Colette knows women who have the most to lose from climate disasters also know what it’ll take to plan for the future and anticipate the storm.

HOUSTON - The Houston Police Department just announced the officer accused of shooting his wife in the face with a rifle has been terminated, effective immediately.
BACKGROUND: Off-duty Houston police officer accused of shooting his wife in the face
Galib Chowdhury, 31, was arrested and charged with the first-degree felony of aggravated assault against a family member, causing serious bodily injury with a deadly weapon.
HPD tweeted, "Galib Chowdhury has been terminated and is no longer a Houston police officer, effective today. The criminal case is in the hands of the court & criminal justice system. Our hearts remain with the victim, Sadaf Iqbal. We ask the community to pray for her and her family."
Iqbal's family shared the following statement:
"At this time Sadaf, and we, as her family, commend Houston Police Department's actions in terminating Galib Chowdhury today. Every HPD officer has a motto pinned across their badge that says ‘Nemo Me Impune Lacessit’ -- ‘No one injures me with impunity.’ In having the privilege of wearing this badge daily, and being entrusted with the safety of citizens, Mr. Chowdhury overlooked the notion that he was also entrusted to act as a law-abiding citizen when not wearing that badge. The facts will be clear, and the law will be just in the end. We are happy that justice has taken its first steps forward in the way that it should, and that HPD can move on without the stain of this incident on its future. Sadaf and our family are grateful for HPD's support during this difficult time."
The now-former officer who had two years of service was initially relieved of duty immediately following the shooting, according to Chief Troy Finner.
RELATED: Off-duty Houston police officer accused of shooting wife in face: Bond set during court appearance
According to officials, Chowdhury called 911 to report an alleged break-in but did not provide a suspect description or direction of travel.
Police on the scene determined there were no signs of a break-in and believed the shooting was intentional, but court authorities revealed Chowdhury's wife also claimed it was accidental.
"The complainant said to medical staff that her husband the defendant shot at her, but that it was an accident," authorities said.
BACKGROUND: Off-duty Houston police officer accused of shooting his wife in the face identified
According to officials, Chowdhury almost killed his wife. She suffered injuries to her right eyeball, a cheekbone fracture, and several bone fractures to her right hand and fingers, authorities report.
County records show the two got married last year.
Court authorities say surveillance video from the apartment showed Chowdhury arriving home about 40 minutes before his wife around midnight Monday.
Records show Chowdhury then sent her several aggressive text messages before the shooting.
"Many victims feel very protective towards their abusive partners to the degree that many people recant stories in which they do identify as being abused by the person, and then they’ll say no that didn’t happen," said Maisha Colter, CEO of AVDA, Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse organization.

Senior Care in Houston: How to Choose the Right Agency for Your Family
As we age, the need for quality care and support becomes increasingly important. For families in Houston, finding a reliable senior care agency can be a challenge. Whether your loved one needs assistance with daily activities, companionship, or more specialized medical care, a trusted senior care agency in houston can offer the right solutions.
What is a Senior Care Agency?
A senior care agency provides a range of services designed to help elderly individuals live safely and comfortably at home or in a facility. These services may include personal care (bathing, dressing, grooming), companionship, medication management, transportation, meal preparation, and even skilled nursing care for those with medical needs. In Houston, senior care agencies offer both in-home care and residential care options, allowing families to choose what works best for their loved one’s situation.
Why Choose a Senior Care Agency in Houston?
Houston is a diverse and vibrant city, but for older adults, navigating healthcare, social services, and daily life can be overwhelming. By creating individualized care plans that are specific to each senior's needs, a senior care organization may give families peace of mind. Many agencies in Houston employ highly trained caregivers, including certified nursing assistants (CNAs), registered nurses (RNs), and other healthcare professionals who can deliver both non-medical and medical support.
One of the key benefits of choosing a local agency is the ability to connect with caregivers who understand the local community and its resources. This familiarity helps caregivers be more responsive and adaptive to the needs of seniors, ensuring that they receive the highest quality care in a comfortable, familiar environment.
Services Offered by Senior Care Agencies
Most senior care agencies in Houston offer a range of services to ensure that elderly individuals receive the care they need. Common services include:
Personal Care: Assistance with daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and mobility.
Companion Care: Social interaction and engagement to help reduce isolation and improve mental well-being.
Alzheimer's and Dementia Care: Specialized care for seniors with cognitive impairments.
Respite Care: Short-term care services to provide much-needed respite to family caregivers.
24/7 Care: For seniors who require round-the-clock support.
Finding the Right Senior Care Agency
When selecting a senior care agency in Houston, it’s important to consider factors like the agency’s reputation, caregiver training, and ability to customize services. Reading reviews, checking credentials, and scheduling consultations with agencies can help families make an informed decision.
In conclusion, a senior care agency in Houston offers a vital resource for families seeking to ensure that their loved ones receive compassionate, professional care. Seniors can live comfortably in their own homes and preserve their independence with the correct assistance.

Electrical Systems: What to Know About Home Inspection Services in Houston, Texas
When buying a home in Houston, Texas, one of the key areas that often gets overlooked but is incredibly important is the electrical system. A thorough inspection of this system can reveal potential safety issues, give you an understanding of the home’s energy efficiency, and help you avoid costly repairs down the line. Here’s everything you need to know about what a home inspector will look for in the electrical system and why it matters to you as a homebuyer.
Why Electrical Inspections Are So Important in Houston
Houston’s extreme weather conditions, including high temperatures and humidity, put extra stress on electrical systems. With increased use of air conditioning, fans, and other cooling systems, many Houston homes rely heavily on electricity year-round. Ensuring that a property’s electrical system is safe, up to code, and capable of handling this load is essential. Faulty wiring or outdated electrical panels can lead to power outages, costly repairs, or, worst of all, electrical fires.
What the Home Inspector Looks For
A home inspector in Houston will carefully examine various parts of the electrical system. Here’s a breakdown of what they’ll look at and why each element is important:
Main Electrical Panel
The main panel (or circuit breaker box) is the heart of a home’s electrical system. Inspectors check if it’s up to code, organized, and labeled correctly. They also ensure it has no rust or water damage. If the panel is outdated, replacement may be necessary to ensure the home can handle modern electrical loads safely.
Wiring and Outlets
Inspectors examine wiring throughout the home, looking for frayed wires, improper connections, or aluminum wiring, which is less safe than copper. Outlets should be tested to make sure they’re grounded and have the correct polarity. In wet areas like bathrooms and kitchens, outlets should be GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets, designed to prevent electric shock.
Overloaded Circuits
In homes with outdated systems, circuits can easily become overloaded, especially when trying to run multiple devices simultaneously. The inspector checks to ensure circuits are balanced and that breakers aren’t constantly tripping, which can signal potential issues with power distribution in the home.
Safety Devices
Working smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and surge protectors are critical safety features in any home. A good inspector will verify their presence and functionality. If the home lacks these essential devices, it’s an important note for both safety and future installation.
Proper Grounding
Proper grounding protects the electrical system from surges and reduces the risk of shock. Inspectors will check for grounding wires and grounding rods to ensure the entire system has the protection it needs.
Common Electrical Issues Found in Houston Homes
In Houston, some specific electrical issues tend to come up more frequently, especially in older homes:
Knob-and-Tube Wiring: This type of wiring was used in homes built before the 1950s. It’s outdated and can be a fire hazard, so replacing it with modern wiring is necessary.
Aluminum Wiring: Used in the 1960s and 70s, aluminum wiring is prone to overheating and is a common issue in older Houston homes. Upgrading to copper wiring is recommended for safety.
Insufficient Outlets: Many older homes lack the number of outlets needed to support today’s electronic devices. Using too many power strips can create a fire hazard, so you may want to consider upgrading the system to add more outlets.
Questions to Ask Your Inspector About Electrical Systems
When the inspection is complete, it’s a good idea to ask questions to understand the electrical system’s current condition and potential future needs. Here are a few questions to consider:
Is the Electrical Panel Up to Code?
Knowing if the main panel meets current standards is essential. An outdated panel may need replacement, which can be an investment but ensures the system’s reliability and safety.
Are There Any Safety Hazards in the Wiring?
Faulty wiring is a common issue and one of the leading causes of electrical fires. If your inspector identifies any hazards, get an estimate on repairs so you can factor them into your home-buying decision.
Is the System Grounded Properly?
Proper grounding is a fundamental part of a safe electrical system. Ask the inspector if they’ve found any issues with grounding, as these may need immediate attention.
Do I Need Additional GFCI Outlets?
GFCI outlets are necessary in certain areas, especially in wet environments like kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor spaces. If these are missing, you may want to plan for installation to enhance safety.
How Much Life is Left in the System?
Although difficult to determine exactly, an inspector can often give a rough idea of how long the system will last based on the age of the components. This can help you plan for future upgrades.
How Electrical Inspection Helps with Home Insurance and Financing
Many insurance companies require that a home meets certain electrical standards before they agree to provide coverage. A thorough inspection can save you time and prevent obstacles in securing insurance or financing. For example, if your inspector finds outdated wiring or an old panel, it’s better to know about it upfront so that you can address it with the seller or negotiate the price accordingly.
Tips for Buyers: When Electrical Repairs Are Needed
If the inspection report reveals issues, don’t panic. Here’s how you can handle necessary repairs or upgrades:
Get a Professional Evaluation: If major issues are found, such as old wiring or an outdated panel, consider hiring a licensed electrician to evaluate the system and provide a detailed estimate for repairs.
Negotiate with the Seller: Use the inspection report to negotiate with the seller. You can ask them to make the repairs before closing or request a credit so you can make the updates yourself.
Plan for Future Upgrades: If the system is functioning but nearing the end of its life, make a plan to upgrade it over time. Updating the electrical system can increase the home’s value and make it more energy-efficient.
Final Thoughts: Don’t Overlook the Electrical System
A home inspection in Houston isn’t complete without a thorough check of the electrical system. This essential part of the home’s infrastructure not only keeps the lights on but also protects your family’s safety. By understanding the condition of the electrical system and asking key questions, you can make informed decisions about repairs and upgrades. This extra attention during the inspection phase helps ensure that your new Houston home is safe, comfortable, and ready to support your modern lifestyle.
Taking the time to understand this system can help you avoid unexpected surprises, making your home-buying experience in Houston a smooth and safe process.
