Finally getting around to putting together a little post about our Disney trip last month ! If I had one word to describe our week at Disney it would be : MAGICAL . Literally I could not have dreamt up a better week for our family . Which leads me to my first recommendation when planning a Disney trip - use a Disney planner . Find someone who does it professionally and has stayed at all the resorts, eaten at all the restaurants, and knows the ins and outs of all the parks ! My gal literally created us the perfect itinerary from the moment we hit the ground in Orlando ! I can’t stress enough how key it was having a Disney expert plan our entire trip . Those extremely hard to get reservations like eating in the castle, Biddi Boppidi Boutique, the good resorts, etc - it’s her job to get you those and man did she deliver ! She booked us reservations at all the top spots and made sure every last detail was taken care of ! If you take anything away from this .. it’s start your planning by connecting with a Disney planner !
WHERE TO STAY :
• this was my first time actually staying on Disney property ! In years past I always stayed about a mile away at my grandma’s time share so being on property was totally new to me . Now I see why staying on Disney property is recommended ! From the minute you arrive they are so kind, helpful, and completely cater to you and your family . With that said I recommend
CARIBBEAN BEACH CLUB (moderate)
RIVIERA RESORT (deluxe)
The reason I chose our resort was because it was on the sky liner. The sky liner is a game changer ! We could get to Hollywood Studios and Epcot in under 10 mins. I wish this also went to Magic Kingdom it was so convenient! You can hop on the sky liner from Caribbean Beach or Riviera !
The pools at these resorts are so fun for the kids with water falls and water slides ! My girls loved swimming here ! Another perk staying here is you can see Epcots fireworks at night from the resort !
STROLLER RENTAL :
• Disney only allows strollers in their parks . You end up walking 9+ miles a day in the parks so even my 6 year old rode in the stroller ! My gal set up our stroller rental through Kingdom Strollers and they are high end strollers you can rent that are much more comfortable than the plastic ones you can rent at the parks ! They drop the stroller off right at your resort and also come pick it up at the end of your trip! It was a super easy service to use !
WHERE TO EAT :
• there are a gazillion places to eat at Disney so I’m just going to list my favorite at each park !
Magic Kingdom : The Royal Table
While the food here was good, it wasn’t amazing ! But the experience made it worth the money ! It is very pricey to eat here but if you have kiddos who love princesses this is your chance to have private convos and pictures with 5 princesses ! Being that my girls are in their Princess Era , this was something they loved ! You have to book this 60 days out on the day reservations open up and you do have to pay at the time of booking ! (Just a FYI)
EPCOT : Napolis
I would probably eat pizza every day if I could . This place had amazing Italian food ! Also if you have an allergy Disney is amazing at catering to that ! Gluten free ? No problem - they have a menu for that and the chef will also come meet with you to discuss your food ! Service is top notch !
Also we happened to be there during the Food and Wine festival at Epcot ! Highly recommend ! I ate and drank my way around the entire world ! It was one of my top favorite things !!
HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS :
50s Primetime Cafe or the Drive In
I enjoyed both ! Drive in is fun for the kids . The fried chicken at 50s Primetime is awesome !
Also stop by Woody’s lunch box for their homemade pop tart ! Soo sooo good !
DISNEY SPRINGS :
Art Smith’s Homecookin’ ! If you love down home southern food this is your spot ! So freaking good !
We also ate at Rainforest Cafe at Disney Springs and my girls loved it !
WHAT ARE THE BEST RIDES ?
Magic Kingdom :
• 7 Dwarfs Train
• Peter Pan
• Haunted Mansion
• it’s a small world - bc I love things that remind me of my childhood and I’ve always loved this ride 💛
Hollywood Studios :
• Minnie + Mickeys Railway
• Slinky Dog
• Tower or Terror (my 4 year old loved this ride!)
Epcot :
• Guardians of the Galaxy : cosmic rewind
• Frozen Ever After
Also recommend buying the Genie Plus service daily when at the parks ! I was so nervous about figuring out how to use this tool but I caught on quickly and while it will cost you on average an extra $100 a day it allows you to skip the long lines which was worth it with two little ones !
FAVORITE PART OF THE TRIP :
• Biddi Boppi Boutique
My girls favorite thing was getting turned into princesses for the day ! We got a 9:30am reservation at the Castle location in Magic Kingdom and they turned my littlest loves into the Princess of their dreams ! It was the cutest experience and worth the hefty price tag ! It’s a day they won’t soon forget ! They are already talking about doing it again !!
RANDOM TIPS :
• Learn the Genie+ program
• Book reservations for all your table service meals ! It’s better to have them and cancel then be stuck with no where to eat .
• Have a built in REST DAY in the middle of your week! This gave us a chance to sleep in and for my girls to rest ! They enjoyed swimming and playing around our resort all day ! I would not ever do an entire week at Disney without this rest day!
• Plan at least one evening to see Magic’s Kingdoms Fireworks + Castle show at night! It’s so fun and beautiful ! My girls loved this !
• Buy the Photo Pass package when you book your trip! It will save you money and you will want the pictures ! There are people all over the parks taking your pictures along with pictures on all the rides !
• Buy a phone charger to carry in your backpack . The Disney World app will drain your battery and you need it ALL day! The app literally is used for everything from paying, to reservations, to booking your fast pass to the rides !
Last but not least .. bring along a Disney dad 😉 my husband made this trip extra amazing ! He went all out for his girls and it was something to see !
Until Next Time Disney …

𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 — part one > part two. masterlist. library acc. taglist.
Beautiful. Dangerous. Addicting.
Ari Levinson’s lustful thoughts thunder as his candy red tongue licks your glossy folds torturously slow, ravishing in the artful way your back rises in a poetic arc as an airy whine falls from your mouth.
Bewitching. Wicked. Perfect.
Clay Appuzzo’s head carnally rasps, his rosy-pink lips bruised from crashing them against his brunette lover that takes each deep thrust he gives him while his olive eyes lock with yours that watch with precise attention.
Give me more. It burns like fire. Give me more.
The pleads swim and drown, they resurface in your ears as you witness the man who seems more powerful than a God lay before you. Eating you out till your tart nectar soaks his full beard through and makes his lips shiny with dew.
A slurp and a suck brings colorful hues to your vision, a lick and roll of his talented tongue clears them out yet manifests them back. Bringing you in and out of consciousness to behold the sight of a man with midnight black hair, lovestruck stars pouring in beads of sweat.
Rolling down the cords of muscle on his back and the slope of his temple as his hips collide with the man who french-kisses your cunt, fucking his ass at the same tempo rhythm.
It makes you restlessly grind your hips into Ari’s mouth at the sight, high on your cotton cloud of fluffy euphoria. Glassy eyes captivating the Eyes of the Heavens but feeling the heat of Hells Gates.
So torn between the two hemispheres, is bonding your heart and soul; like all the forgotten love letters you’ve pieced together, like the transforming moon going through its metamorphic stages.
Two strangers of the night, claiming your mind, body and soul— but how did it come to be?
The place was Lovers Lane, a roaring New Jersey club near the sparkling turquoise shores and blonde beaches. A place most memorable for good drinks, the Hampton-like waves and hopeless strangers dirty dancing under disco balls until they fall in and out of love.
Tonight, was one of the typical Saturday nights that anyone local with money and time to burn in the city would spend it here. Hollywood stars appearing here and there yet no one really notices the highly acclaimed Ari Levinson and creative genius Clay Appuzzo at a private booth.
Swooning strangers with their mysterious connections and unspoken secrets in their citrus margarita eyes. However, it was not common for them to run across a mystery of their own.
She, the midnight woman in strawberry red was a rarity in the tarot cards gifted down from the wicked stars. Possessing their twinkle and burn the minute she stepped in and flooded the dance floor in her energy.
She’s a dizzy reverie in strawberry silk, destined to enthrall the photographer that dances with her to his knees, his hands raised in a prophet's prayer. Pleading to taste the lips of the midnight woman in strawberry lipstick, staining both the lovers' minds in seventy-nine-dollar lip prints.
The thought is both appetizing and beyond Clay’s sinful imagination, to his lovestruck eyes and curious hands that grow more curious. They hold the roundness of her ass against his hardening member under the polaroid lights of the spiraling disco ball and she smirks.
How did she come to be?
Ari Levinson wonders, he feels himself spiraling even when he’s seated on a barstool. Pairs of lovers besides him line up the bar yet he reserves his space for his lover, and another for the woman rocking his beliefs and heart.
Pink honeysuckles of growing fascination and temptation bloom sharp and explode like firecrackers inside his chest. The petals of curiosity fall to the pits of his stomach, blossoming seeds of hesitation and anticipation. They sprout with a glance, a wink, a flip of her bouncy hair to his direction.
This enthrallment trails dangerous allurement inside Ari Levinson, whispering a prophecy in the conch shell of his ears that ales his ocean hues follow your prominent figure. Swimming through the purple liquid of his pomegranate tequila in the cocktail glass he looks through, he sets it down after taking a mouthful sip.
Rosy-dawned fingertips clasp the mood ring around his thumb, fading away from a blue glow to a red when you catch his gaze. With another set of rubs to the crystal you both bashfully look away, you looking back to the tall man that grabs your hips as you both dance against each other.
A sense of corrupted virtue in your mascara stroked eyes, no one could suspect that the same man is looking at Ari with that same look. They both radiate sex and hunger, something Ari writes for a living and sensate every day. But for some reason it doesn’t possess meaning when you’re the outline and archetype of every word and desire he’s written on his old typewriter.
It’s perplexing, because nothing Ari could write can he bring into existence. Although, this event of his lover dancing with the mysterious stranger with the magnetic eyes and entrancing lips that seem to captivate everyone is a ripped page straight out of one of his erotica’s.
The taste of pomegranate soaks his mouth, his scruff cheeks warming as the alcohol swims through his veins. Exhilaration fuels the pace of his heart that beats along with the music, Ari observed the dance between Clay and the mystery woman becoming more handsy and intimate.
It’s getting Ari feeling a delirious type of feather light, burning all over till he pulls off the brown leather jacket off his shoulders. Unbuttoning the three buttons of his peacock blue polo till the gold in his Star of David glimmers, he calls Jake the bartender over.
“You called Levinson,” the man remarks, his candy-striped button-up rolled up to his elbows. Drinking from a glass bottle of coke, enjoying the free entertainment that came along with being a bartender.
The older man doesn’t look at him, making the curious bartender Jacob Wolf shift his gaze to where his loyal customer glances. Amused, his hazelnut hues latch sight on the woman who's on everyone's mind and paycheck.
“Give the strawberry dream over there a drink. It’s on me.” Ari drawls, not withdrawing his longing stare away from her despite the growing crowds of dancing bodies intervene.
Jacob laughs, because only God knows how many times he’s been asked that. “Alright, what are your requests?” the man questions, enjoying the look of blank answers written on Ari’s features.
Usually, when Clay and Ari pick a girl up, they wouldn’t care what to get her and neither of them would care. Whatever that made the girl soft and dreamy on them did the trick, but you don't seem to apply to that. Ari needs to impress you; he needs to figure out where your strings like to be pulled.
“I suppose I should ask her.” he sighs, he doesn’t know why it came out so airy and delicate and it makes Jacob snicker again.
Jugging down the rest of his cold cola, he disposed it before patting own the blue velvet on Ari’s shoulder. “Smart, because they didn’t do that and she hasn’t touched a single drink all night.” his head gestures to the opposite side of the bar aligned with various drinks of sizes and colors, all untouched.
Ari manages to find the familiar tall figure of his boyfriend and where Clay is he manages to find her. Kissing him like a tease and pulling away for him to crave more of her forbidden fruit lips. If only his ears could catch the sweet sounds of her moaning softly against Clay's lips. Commenting how they taste like cherries, Ari knows that she’s thinking that his lips taste like cherries.
The music gets louder, the lights spin faster, his thoughts get wilder. Looking back Ari sees her fingers in his raven hair, her palms rubbing the exposed skin of his chest and her striking body rocking against his thigh.
Ari smirks and sips from his drink, recognizing Clay’s tactic of initiating a heated dance to just excuse himself for a little break. Leaving whatever woman he dances with hooked, he doesn’t even need to count down the minute because he’s now sitting down next to him.
Panting like dog in heat, Clay lets out a tamed but tipsy howl. “I have t’say this Ari, woman these days are made to destroy men. I can’t get enough of ‘em, they kill me in the best way.”
The man who’s been dancing for half an hour pants whilst his hand sneaks to rub Ari’s thigh, running his fingers through his own tasseled hair. White teeth flash and Ari feels faint when Clay has the audacity to get his tube of cherry chapstick from his pocket and apply another coat of cherry chapstick on his lips.
“Hey Alpha! What does a guy have t’do to getta pepino over here!” Clay hollers, smirking wider when Jacob rolls his eyes as he finishes up a trick of vodka shots to entertain a group tourists.
“And that gal back there, I think— let me hold that thought. I think someone’s needy for some attention.” Clay gestures to her figure dancing alone under the disco ball, catching the lime and cucumber drink sliding through the grapefruit vinyl.
Both their eyes trail back to her body grooving to the new beat, the circulation of her hips and the flow of her waist and shoulders entrance them. Clays hands rub at the coffee brown velvet wrapped around his thighs, taking Ari’s hand and putting them on his throbbing cock.
Erect by the fuck me eyes you give to the two men and the way Ari’s teeth pull his own bottom lip in between them. Straining when Ari grabs at it under the shadow of the bar ledge, the crystal in his mood ring glowing red.
“What are you thinkin’ honey?” Ari draws, lips tracing the dimple on Clay's smile while his thumb rubs the ruby ring wrapped around his lovers middle finger.
A little endowment he gifted Clay one night in some hotel honeymoon suite when he knew he fell deeply in love with him. Clay bites his bottom lip, normally his boyfriend would be hesitant to show him this much attention in public but it seems tonight is a packed house.
Everyone seems to have their eyes on their own conquests, playing a cat and mouse game just to feel something. The same game you’re playing, their burning hues are glued to her spellbind silhouette who continues to dance with entranced men with sex tosseled hair and women in see-through sequined bralettes.
All the attention she attracts, all the desires she derives, she keeps her fixed gaze on Ari. Sending a silent whisper from the movement of her lips, asking him for a dance with the playful wink that makes Ari’s knees shake.
“Suppose I should be askin’ what you’re thinkin’ Levinson.” Clay sends him a cocksure grin, taking the pepino tequila he ordered and taking a long sip, not pulling his own lust drunk gaze away.
“I’m thinkin she’s fuckin perfect. I know this might seem crazy but, fuck— she put a damn spell on me, honey. What am I supposed to do?” Ari talks like a man deprived of water and sex, both things Clay provide for him and he doesn’t disagree with Ari’s confession.
“I think you should dance with her. Look at her eyes, fuck look at ‘em Ari.” Clay growls as his hand with the ruby ring wraps around Ari’s jaw so his taunted blues can lock with her hues from the other side of the dance floor.
“Just look at her—“ Ari is and how could he not? “She’s beggin’ you for a dance. Read her eyes, she’s beggin’ you to make a move.” she’s biting her lip, her body moving in sync to the song and Ari’s pounding heartbeat.
“What are you gonna do with her? How are you gonna please her?” Ari shivers as Clay whispers, liquor-soaked lips brushing against the soft skin of his ear.
The man with the shoulder length hair of honey can’t look away and he won’t look away. It’s the way she seems to draw everyone's attention to her, the way she embodies everyone's deepest secrets and desires.
Maybe it’s from the delirious moment to act without giving attentive thought that encourages him to sip more from his glass and shamelessly gawk at her, at you.
Perhaps it’s the hand that rubs at his hardening cock and teeth that grasp the skin of his ear which drive him to imagine what it would be like to have you naked and moaning in between him and Clay.
Or for all Ari Levinson knows, it could be the factor that he wears his heart on his sleeve and you're undoing the buttons of his heart strings with a satisfaction that makes your lashes bat and your own beating muscle flutter.
“What are you waitin’ for?” Clay whispers and Ari curses himself for wondering the same thing, his feet hitting the polished tiles as his body joins the other sweaty and lust-radiating ones on the dance floor.
Strangers touch him, strangers dance with him, strangers tell him the numbers to their hotel rooms, but he still locks his eyes to you and moves closer, closer, closer.
Till he becomes face to face with you, eyes batting, bodies moving, noses touching and hands wandering as you two bring everyone’s attention on you both.
It’s arousing, lewd, promiscuous and everyone’s immorally drunk on it as the music only gets louder and the euphoria of colorful lights spin faster. Your peach painted nails trace Ari’s beard whilst your ass grinds against his body, going down till he can see the lascivious curve of your back.
Getting down until your hands touch your platforms, Ari’s hands grasp your hips, massaging the softness while the delicious friction of your plump ass drags slowly against his thighs, loins and finally till it grinds against his boner.
Wolf whistles and drunk whoops of encouragement ring out and with another spin of the disco ball does Ari notice his lover joins in on the dance. The midnight woman’s lust drunk eyes match the erotic olives of Clays, the air becoming thicker and the lights gleaming a deep red as the man with the ruby ring moves his body to match hers.
Ari’s mouth tracing her neck and his cock rubbing against your ass. The two of them are a dangerous mixture of lethal lust, intoxicated off them just as they are off you. The midnight woman, you, would never have thought to have a night like this.
Dancing with the man who writes all the romantic erotic novels you play with your pussy to and the man who photographs the covers for them. The very men of your dreams you’ve never that you’ve ever find in your coffee-stained reality, yet here you are living it.
please let this night last, make this dream last forever
Ari takes takes you’re face in his hands and presses a wet and gentle kiss, all you can taste is pomegranate and the sudden craving you have for more.
“I don’t want this night to end either.” Ari lips move against your neck, thrumming the violin strings of your heart.
“Ari, what do you say we make her night even more special and take her to see the patio.” Clay speaks as if you weren’t there, although your face heats up as the legendary Clay Appuzzo kisses your hand.
“I say that sounds like a good idea, away from preying eyes. Just us and our strawberry.” Ari agrees with a hum, taking your other hand in his large one and sucking down on your pulse.
The threat of his teeth nips at your skin and suddenly you're dizzy all over despite not having a single drink. Continuing the motions of your hips, your head pulls back giving him your approving moans.
“That sounds perfect.”

Ugh 😑
Heads up, this is a minor rant! Proceed with caution.
I feel like such a shit friend for what I’m about to express but I have to get this off of my chest because I have no one else to complain to. Also, I know I’m a great friend but I’m very particular about how I do things and I need to be at peace when I’m somewhere
So, my birthday is in a few days and I’m going to Miami/islamorada/key west for 10 days. I’ll be in Miami for 4 days with my girl best friend, and then “Travel daddy” the remainder of the trip.
So me and my best friend are similar in the sense of us being laid back and chill, we don’t do too much, when we go out we’re not twerking on table tops or fighting or any of that ratchet bullshit (now don’t get me wrong, you put the right song on and I’ll shake these cheeks but i just don’t like that type of attention, I sucked as a stripper 😂) But we are also VERY different. I like to try new things, eat at kind of fancy restaurants (if I’m paying, VERY fancy on a “mans” dime 💁🏽♀️) , I don’t like to go to clubs and if I do I’m definitely leaving early, lounge by the beach/pool, swim, snorkel, bike ride etc. So I’ve been trying to plan stuff for us to do but it’s hard because I have to take her into consideration (I’m used to traveling alone or with some man that’s trying to please me so I’m usually able to just do what I want )
Here is a list of grievances & concerns I have thus far:
1: She doesn’t really like sushi. Yes, that’s petty but I have dinner reservations the night of my birthday at a sushi place with a tasting menu. She said she was okay with going but eh idk, and then is she going to be cool with the price tag of the tasting menu? Any tasting I’ve ever done all the people at the table had to do the tasting menu
2: Piggy backing off of the first point, her sister is flying in the same day we are to help her friend that’s getting a BBL down there (😑, I’ll explain why I’m not a fan of her sister later) but we arrive at like 12, she’ll be arriving around 8 pm..the time I made reservations at the sushi spot. So earlier we were on the phone and she said “oh yeah such and such gets there around 8 I told her WE would come pick her up from the airport” Pause! WHO? Not I! I said “that’s the time our reservations are for” she was like “oh well she can just meet us there” 🤦🏽♀️ now remember I said I don’t do too much, I’m quiet and reserved. Her sister, not so much. She’s not about to embarrass me and she’s DEF not chilling at the hotel with her loud ass. My thing is, how tf you inviting people to MY birthday dinner. I honestly don’t wanna see her sister at all while we’re there, but I’m willing to meet her somewhere for an hour or so and then leave ✌🏽
(I don’t like her sister because the very first time I met her a couple years ago on NYE she basically got us involved in a literal BRAWL at a HOUSE PARTY in the heart of west philly of all places 😑 long story short the whole party beat her sisters ass for walking in and tAlking shit, and then Her sister stole someones whole car at the party, I guess when they were jumping her someone’s keys fell out of their pocket so she took the keys and figures out which car it belonged to and stole it, like it was just a ghetto ass mess)
3: She keeps asking me the same questions over and over. We have had this trip booked for MONTHS, literally, I like to be organized and plan shit out, but every week or so it’s “so where are we staying again” “how much is it” “do you think my hair will last if I get a frontal” to which I replied BITCH NEVER, just get braids or locs, of course she just got a sewin/frontal earlier…okay but I warned you sis😖. now mind you this will be her first time in Miami so she wasn’t really trying to pay the price (half) for the hotel I booked. I’ve been to Miami plenty of times on top of actually living there and there’s no better deal we’re going to get on south beach, with all the amenities that the hotel offers, I’m very good at planning and booking trips and finding the best deals so I was highly irritated when just a week before our trip shes tryna find cheaper places. I told her she can look but it needs to at least •be in south beach •be on collins/ocean drive and •have a pool (unless she could find an Airbnb). Y’all she sent me all these bullshit ass links to places in HOLLYWOOD (which I actually love but I said south beach…), Miami Gardens 🤮, and ft. Lauderdale and they didn’t have any amenities and were MORE money. In my head I was like “bruh nevermind we’re staying where we’re staying, you don’t need to do ANYMORE looking” 🙅🏽♀️
4: she doesn’t like the water or swimming. That’s the main reason I even go to Florida so often for the water, like literally. I’m not a fan of most beaches up north (Giants neck beach In CT Is awesome though, Maine has some nice ones too but it’s just so cold even on a very hot summer day, jersey has a few as well but mainly I like clear waters) So anyway, I wanted to book this snorkel/boat tour/key west tour but she doesn’t want to do it because 1: she doesn’t wanna snorkel but 2: we would have to leave at 6:30 am and she doesn’t get up until like 12 🙄 I feel like I’m limited as to what I can do
5: She still hasn’t sent me her half of the hotel fee and we leave Tuesday…it’s Saturday. She’s been saying “imma send it tomorrow” for like 2 weeks now and telling me about her car troubles
6: As I mentioned she wakes up late, which means she goes to bed late. The latest I go to bed is like 12 but when I’m on “vacation” I tend to drink more than I normally would so I go to sleep early. Shit when me and travel daddy went to all those vineyards I legit took naps mid day to keep up 😂 I’m worried she’s gonna keep me up like she did last month when I spent the night at her house, I was HIGHLY irritated and it was only one night
I’m seriously pondering why tf I thought this was a good idea. Lowkey I didn’t think it was a good idea but we’ve never traveled together and she’s never been to Miami (she’s the reason we’re even going to Miami because I’ve BEEN over Miami, it’s packed and overrated but I thought it would be a cute thing for us to do)
It doesn’t matter how cool you are with someone you have to have the right travel buddy and just because you get along doesn’t mean you should travel together. Sadly, I can already tell you this is our last trip together
The irony is I was sooo hesitant and complaining about going on the WPB trip but ended up having a blast, but we also had a huge villa and everyone had privacy, and I only personally knew one person so at first I didn’t feel super obligated to be all chummy with his friends, but I loved all of them they were so much fun and liked to do the stuff I like to do, it really was such a bomb trip I wish I could show you guys all the cute pics and videos we took, REALLY great vibes
I love my best friend to death but I’m so apprehensive about this trip. We don’t even chill that often on the regular, mainly because we’re both just busy or live kind of far from eachother but I’m that friend that loves you…from afar, every now and then she’ll drag me out to some lounge and I’m always ready to go early it’s just not my scene, I wanna be in bed damnit! 😩
Am I just being a brat? What do you guys think?

Title: Kismet {12}
Henry Cavill x Famous OFC Aliya Taylor
Warning: Plot, Slow Burn, Mild Cursing, Dialogue Heavy
Words: 4.2k
Summary: Aliya is a singer turned model turned actress. Since she was fifteen, she’s been creating her empire in the entertainment world. When one thinks of a vacation, you think of beaches, sand, salty ocean water that you can see right through, a blazing sun that is a joy to be burned by, tropical drinks, lounging by the pool in a hammock with an endless supply of bathing suits. When one thinks of the quintessential French vacation, you could think of waking up the smell of flowers from the countryside and the ocean salt, the warm caress of the sun as you sip your French coffee, lounging on the beaches, touring the countryside by day, feasting on the best authentic French cuisine, sipping the best of wine country offered all the while soaking up culture and relaxation. In other words, live like the French.
Your vacation, though it started awkwardly, didn’t remain that way for too long. You and Henry had made it a mission to take relaxation and freedom to the max and, by doing so, you had created somewhat of a routine. Usually, either you or Henry would make breakfast and coffee then have it outside. After breakfast, you’d both lounge by the pool for an hour or two. That was before you found out he liked to work out first thing in the morning. Though you weren’t much for working out, you vowed to do it with him. which led to you having your coffee and then out for a run through the fields. He often went four miles out then four miles back, but when he realized you were not a runner, he cut it down to two and two. Even that was torture for you.
Then once you’d returned and showered, whoever came out first would make a simple breakfast that you’d have out back and then to the pool. After you’d take a drive, often going miles and miles checking out neighboring towns seeing sights. On each day, Henry always had something planned. One day it was a tour of a vineyard where you learned all about the winemaking process, helped harvest grapes, and even did the traditional squishing grapes with your feet. That was the day Henry had the brilliant idea to play up your ticklishness, which led to you falling in the barrel staining your white shorts ensemble red. He laughed his ass off to that. By the time you left the vineyard, both of your outfits were ruined, but you had plenty of pictures and a crate of the wine you’d made.
Another day it was sailing around the Mediterranean in a boat that Henry manned himself. You couldn’t help but watch in awe as he steered it like a pro and taught you the proper terms for things on the boat. When he’d found a good spot to drop anchor close to some rocks, you lounged on the hull soaking up the sun, then taking a dunk in the ocean when the heat became too much where you snorkeled around the reef. On a particular day, he took out a speedboat to St. Tropez for shopping and spa treatments that really had your entire body feeling like jello.
While he liked to spoil you with luxurious options, he also liked the rugged things too. He taught you how to fish and took you on multiple nature walks. While you enjoyed nature, you realized you didn’t like it as much as he did. According to him, he would choose to be out in nature as often as he possibly could. You were slowly beginning to enjoy it as much as he did. A few times, you took him to a club where you saw firsthand that he was a real party boy in another life. You liked the club nights because it showed you a whole other side of him. The side that was carefree, able to cut loose and not take himself seriously. It was a side you made a silent vow to bring out as often as you could.
To round out the experience, he did as the French and took advantage of France’s natural romance. There were plenty of romantic dinners at romantic restaurants that overlooked the ocean or the cliffs or the city lights and even a few at romantic vineyards with the view of the rolling hills and a sunset. The romance was not something hard to find, and it wasn’t always in going out. You spent plenty of nights in the villa lounging together with candlelight in the room and a gentle breeze wafting through the opened doors while watching something on tv together. While it was awkward before, you were becoming more and more comfortable around him.
This comfort also helped you feel closer to him and though you teased each other often, said sly things to one another, and even flirted shamelessly, nothing else of significance had happened. Henry didn’t make any moves to kiss you or cuddle or even hug you, really. The most he’d done was hold your hand at the most sporadic moments, for the shortest amount of time. It made no sense, and it drove you crazy because you could feel the attraction between you in everything you did. You could sense the desire in the air was strong, but everything remained lukewarm.
Though your comfort level rose, your insomnia never subsided. When Henry had gone to bed, you often remained up just writing music, journaling, or making things with the pictures you’d taken throughout the day. Your sleepless or low sleep nights gave you the chance to either reformulate your plan or think about your progress. A lot of times, thinking about the progress had you thinking about him, and if you did that, it was only a matter of time before your mind drifted to your want for him.
It was funny to you that before him, you could push affection, intimacy, and sex to the side and act like they were not even actual things, and it never bothered you or had any effect. Since Henry, it was damn near impossible. You thought about his touch at every turn, about his lips more times than you could count, and imagined him between your thighs at least once every other day.
One night it had gotten so bad from remembering him swimming in the pool in slow motion. Everything he did was in slow-mo like he was posing for some men’s porn magazine. That was the night you had to please yourself to thoughts of his wet lips, memories of his voice, and body as it moved through the water and muscles as he hoisted himself up out of the water with it dripping off of every inch of him. that night, it was the quickest you’d ever come. You wondered if he was struggling the way you were, but throughout the days, you saw no evidence he was, and that made you more insecure than you’d ever felt in your life.
~~~~~~~~~
-Nine Days Later-
The night was young—well, young for you. While Henry slept, you found yourself in the back yard with the breeze brushing against your bare skin. The glow of the moon beamed down on you, bathing you in its pearlescent illuminance, making you feel like a goddess of the night. It could have been the moon, the fact you were naked under it, or the 2nd bottle of wine you were on. It didn’t matter what it was; you felt good. The wine made your thoughts flow more freely, and where your thoughts went, your pen in your notebook mapped. You got your best writing done at three in the morning when you were naked and feeling wine-nice.
With your pen hooked on your bottom lip, you looked over the new lyrics you’d written for a song that Henry had inspired. The notebook was filled with at least ten more from the same muse. This song was the night’s second one. The first centered around your anxious thoughts about making the first move and how to do it in a way with little to no risk, and your worries of being in the friend zone the second was drastically different. This one focused on you admitting your attraction, the possibility you were falling for him, and your fear of him making you feel out of control. It was raw and real, the realest you’d been in a long time when it came to your feelings.
The words across the page were sensual and painted a clear picture of arousal and desire. As you hummed to yourself the way you imagined it flowing, you began replacing your hums with words. You quickly got lost in your process and zoomed through putting everything down on paper. Once your brain sparked off, it never stopped until it finished the mission.
“Aliya?”
You turned to the sound of Henry’s voice, forgetting your state of undress. Almost immediately, you gasped and grabbed the blanket holding it to your breasts.
“Shit.”
Henry was already turned away, his back facing you.
“Um--.”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry. God, I—shit.”
Henry snorted then slowly released a breath in a loud huff.
You rearranged the blanket then spoke, “You can turn around.”
Slowly and cautiously, Henry turned to you again. With your lips pressed together, you gave him your best apologetic face.
“I’m so sorry. I thought you were asleep. I didn’t think you’d come out here,” you explained.
Again, Henry snorted then chuckled to himself as he nodded his head. You were so embarrassed that you covered your face.
“I’m sorry,” you whispered one last time.
“No need for sorries,” Henry began trying not to make eye contact. “It’s um—it’s okay.”
The awkwardness had returned.
“I didn’t see anything. Don’t worry.”
You didn’t believe him one bit but pushed any remaining awkwardness deep down and fought through it.
“Don’t you sleep at all?”
“Not really. Remember, insomniac.”
“I know you said that, but usually insomniacs can manage something,” Henry said.
“Um, well, since I was diagnosed, I can on occasion get three or four hours tops.
“Wow. We’ve been sharing this house for a little over a week, and I didn’t know that much.”
You smiled and took another sip from your glass. “You’re off the hook, you actually sleep, and it’s great.”
“How long have you had it?”
“Since I was maybe eighteen,” you explained.
“So what do you do when you’re not sleeping?”
After finishing your glass, you moaned and leaned back in your chair. “Walk around, find a good spot to sit, write, sometimes go for a drive, online shop, work. Usually, it is mainly work,” you confessed.
Henry gave you a stern daddyish look. “Are you working now?”
You bit your bottom lip and scrunched your face. “Guilty but only sort of. I’m writing music. That’s not work for me. For me, it’s a component for my sanity.”
Henry nodded. “So you sit up all night naked writing music?”
The way he put it had you laughing out loud.
“Wow, pretty much. Fuck, when you sum it up like that, you make me sound like an insomniac exhibitionist.”
You laughed together for a few short moments. “Can’t they prescribe something?”
“They have, quite a few things actually. When I was eighteenish, I was on several sleeping pills. I was the guinea pig, and I must have tested at least twenty brands and formulas, but none of them seemed to work well with me. Of course, they had to monitor my intake to make sure I didn’t become addicted, but after a few years, I said, forget it let’s not try anything anymore. I just stopped taking the pills and sucked it up,” you clarified.
Henry looked impressed. “So you function on three hours of sleep?”
“Pretty much.”
He whistled then bowed his head. “Wow.”
“it’s not bad. Honestly, it might be a blessing in disguise. I get so much work done they wouldn’t believe.”
“You literally make money while others sleep,” Henry joked.
You softly snickered and nodded.
“Do they know why it started?”
He was asking all the right questions, you thought to yourself.
“Yeah, we know.” You really didn’t want to say anything else, and you had a mini internal fight. Groaning, you continued. “Trauma.”
You could feel his eyes on you, and you rearranged your things on the table and picked off invisible lint off the blanket, all in an effort to not look at him. Though you were physically naked, you felt emotionally so as well. Taking a risk, you glanced at him and held his gaze. He was unreadable.
“Here,” Henry said, holding out a spoon to you.
“A spoon? What’s this for?”
Henry smiled and took a step toward you. “Close your eyes.”
You scoffed and wrinkled your nose before you closed your eyes and waited. You didn’t hear anything and wondered what he was doing.
“Uh—hello? Henry, are you there?”
The sound of Henry clearing his throat told you he was in a different location that was somewhat closer.
“I’m here. Open.”
When you did, you looked around expecting something but not sure just what. When your eyes landed on the ice cream before you, you smiled.
“For your massive sweet tooth.”
You couldn’t help but giggle. He’d learned a few things about that sweet tooth over the last week. This was him being cute about it.
“This Is my favorite flavor and brand. You don’t play, huh.”
“Of course not. I pay attention.”
“Thank you.”
Henry nodded, then pulled another spoon from behind him. “Cheers?”
You knocked your spoon against his and said the same thing. Henry sat beside you while you opened the ice cream, then both of you dug in. the first spoonful had you moaning so loud it echoed around you.
“That good?”
“Mmmm, so good, better than sex,” you joked.
“Then I am sorry, Ms. Taylor, you are having sex with all the wrong ones.”
The spoon paused at your lips as you quirked your eyebrow at him. Henry wasn’t backing down, though. He held your gaze almost like he was challenging you. Damn, you thought before you looked away first.
“So you write all your own songs?”
Nodding, you put another spoonful of ice-cream in your mouth. “All by myself.”
“Impressive. I know artists try, but not a lot do it alone. There will usually be a few co-writers,” Henry added.
You were a little surprised he knew that. “You’re right. More and more try to get on it for the added profits that being a writer brings in. for me, I do it for far more selfish reasons.”
Henry quirked his brow, silently asking you why.
“I need an outlet, something to get everything in my head out. I’m up for twenty to twenty-one hours a day, and I have a lot going on in there. So, I need to be able to get that out to start fresh the next do, that means---I write.”
The way Henry’s eyes rested on you made you feel like he had so much to say, but he was holding back with doing so.
“It’s good to have an outlet.”
“What’s yours?”
His goofy smile made a return, and you couldn't help but smile back.
“Don’t judge me, okay, but it’s video games.”
You smiled and raised your hands. “No judgment here, ever.”
“I like video games, Warcraft, Witcher, Call Of Duty, HALO. Anything bloody, I’m there for it. I also use exercise a lot. I have to work out, have to.”
“Have to?”
Henry took another spoonful of ice cream and sighed out. He looked like he was thinking about something, and you gave him the time needed.
“Yeah, when I was a kid, I was heavy--,” he began sighing. “I was a fat kid, and it meant I got teased and bullied a lot. My nickname was fat, Cavill.”
“Oh no, that’s horrible.”
“Yeah, plus I was at private school. Let’s just say—it was hard, really hard. I had some dark times, and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t stick with me some even to this day.”
You bit your bottom lip, reached your hand out, and rested it on his knee. Your heart sank thinking about what he’d gone through. You knew how painful words could be, especially as a child. “I’m sorry. Kids can be such assholes.”
Henry snorted and gave your hand a gentle squeeze. “They sure can.”
“Plus, I could tell working out is a joy for you. I’m not blind, and neither is the female population of the world and some of the male.”
Henry’s laugh was unexpected but welcomed all the same. You liked his laugh, and the more you heard it, the more it was becoming one of your favorite sounds.
“Seriously though, I’m sorry you went through that. I know it couldn’t have been easy to work through.”
He looked down at your hand that was still on his knee and nodded before he cleared his throat.
“You mentioned you’re close with your grandmother?”
Taking your hand back, you rearranged the blanket again and nodded. “I did. Yeah. She’s my mother’s mother, and she is—she’s my world.” With a soft smile on your lips, you quickly went through your fondest memories with her.
“I don’t think it’s healthy to depend on her as much as I do, but--.” You shrugged. “She helps me with so much, like being forgiving, being more open, being a better person in general. She gets me and doesn’t judge me or make me feel like something is wrong with me. In her eyes, I’m—Corrin, my middle name, and it’s great. All the pressure I constantly carry around is gone.”
Talking about how much your gramaw meant to you made you emotional, and the sting of tears in your eyes told you just how emotional you’d gotten.
“That’s great to have at least one person in your life that can do that for you. you’re lucky.”
“Yes, ha, she’s—uh, she’s the reason I’m here,” you confessed. Henry looked very interested to know what you meant.
“How so?”
“She uh, she just reminded me of a few things and pointed some other things out to me,” you said, giving him the CliffsNotes version. You could tell it wasn’t going to cut it, though, so you continued. “She pretty much made me think from a different perspective, the one that I was desperately trying to ignore.”
Henry still looked interested, but he nodded. “I have to thank her because I’m glad she changed your mind.”
You studied him for a little while as you put another spoonful into your mouth. “Are you?”
Henry didn’t look away or give way to any emotion on his face. He just nodded. “Yes. I’m glad you’re here.”
You didn’t see any indication that he was lying or stretching the truth. You did notice that the pull between you was still there. Henry was the first to look away this time, and the two of you continued to share the half-gallon container of ice cream while chatting. He told you more about his private school days and painted a clearer image of what he was like as a boy, and the image you got was absolute adorableness and tenacity.
By the time you both walked back inside, two hours had passed, and the beginning of the sunrise was peeking out behind the mountains. You stood in the long hall that separated your room from his clutching the sheet wrapped around you and your notebook.
“So, in the morning—or a few hours we’ll catch a flight out,” Henry confirmed.
“Still won’t tell me where to?”
Henry smiled, rubbed the back of his neck, and shook his head. “You don’t like surprises, do you? This is the fifth time you’re trying to pry it out of me.”
You pinched your lips then groaned. “No, no. It’s not that I don’t like surprises. I love surprises—well, good ones. I just like to know every detail. I like--.”
“Being in control,” Henry finished, hitting the nail right on the head. You knew it was the loss of control that was making you antsy.
You closed your eyes and slowly breathed out.
“Yes. I guess I might have a control problem.”
Henry looked very amused. “Might?”
The two of you laughed together, and you couldn’t believe the call out.
“Shut up.”
“It’s okay. I get it. I like control too, a whole lot, and I don’t usually like when control is taken from me, but I’ve gotten better with it. Now, I won’t die if my control is taken. Then—it felt like it.”
You nodded at yet another thing you had in common. It was becoming more than you could count on your fingers.
“Good for you, but I—I might die.”
Henry laughed again, this time not with you, at you.
“I’m going to make you a promise. By the end of this vacation, you will be better at giving me control,” Henry said, his voice so deep and commanding that your spine tingled. When the tingling traveled around to your gut and moved downward, you clutched the sheet tighter.
“Oh, will I?”
He smirked; it was a cocky one. “Yes, you will. I don’t break promises. Never have.”
Your eyes locked, and that tingling intensified, making your lady parts beg for some attention. He was downright captivating, and it was so hard staying on your side of the hall.
“All you have to know is that I won’t abuse my control. You can trust that. You can trust me.”
You almost made the yikes face hearing the T-word. You knew he remembered you saying that trust was a tricky thing for you, and you also knew this was probably a test. You were in between a rock and a hard place. After sighing out, you spoke.
“Okay.”
“But, you do have to say these five words, though,” Henry said with a smirk.
“What?”
“I—relinquish—control—to—you.”
With every word, his voice got deeper and deeper, his eyes more and more focused on you. It was so easy to get lost in them, and he must have known it.
“Uh—no. I can’t say that.”
“Sure you can. I know it’s not easy, but I promise you will not regret it.”
Your nose flared, heart raced, mouth went dry, all points of your anxiety. You hated feeling backed in a corner, and you hated giving away your control even more.
“Will you relinquish control to me?”
With a grin, he spoke, “I will.”
“When?”
“One day,” Henry said, that grin still on his face.
Of course he’d say that you thought. “How about, I will try,” you appeased.
“Nope. Not good enough. I want it all, Aliya.”
You groaned and ruffled your curls, still clutching the sheet with one hand. He was not going to let up.
“God, Henry.”
He didn’t say anything, just waited. He didn’t even look pressed like he was worried you’d say no. He looked confident, commanding, and in complete control, and it called to you. There had never been any other man who you’d ever thought about giving control to. None of them felt like him. He felt different.
“I,” Henry perked up but kept his eyes firmly on yours. another thing you loved about him. “Relinquish—control,” you paused again, feeling the full weight of the words you were going to release. You weren’t just saying that you were giving him control to make the decisions. You were giving him control, period. That was when the panic picked up. “Control to,” you rolled your eyes then hissed. “You.”
The silence stretched, but the longer it went on, the less anxious you felt. Yeah, there was some residual panic lingering, but the look in his eyes only comforted you.
“Thank you. I know how hard that was for you,” Henry softly said.
You looked down and took a shaky breath. “You have no idea.” When you looked back at him, he was still staring at you. “Okay. Well, good night, Henry.”
“Good night, Aliya.”
A visible shiver ran through you, but you ignored it and turned around to walk to your bedroom door. After a few steps, you stopped and smiled as an idea formed. Instead of walking forward, you turned around and walked back to him. Once close enough, you tiptoed, threaded your fingers into his hair at the nape of his neck, then pulled his head down to yours. It was then you pressed your lips to his.
From the second your lips touched, it felt like you’d been standing out in the rain and gotten hit but a lightning bolt. Your moan was loud, and once it slipped out, Henry grabbed you, pulled you flush against him, and held you there. The hand on your hip squeezed while his right hand sneaked around your back to press his palm against your tailbone. That was when you realized you wanted more—a lot more. You sucked his bottom lip into your mouth, then nibbled, sinking your nails into his curls. You were second away from dropping the sheet, so you pulled back, grasping to the fraying threads of your self-control. Henry’s eyes were still closed, giving you a few extra seconds to admire his beauty. He still had the same effect as the first time he’d kissed you.
“Good night, Henry,” you said again, pecking his lips once more before walking away again.
Though you’d given relinquished control, you just took a little of it back. It felt good.
(stone face towards me) and I’m thinking to myself like damn…. she’s actually really sweet though, I can tell lol… so She says let’s play a prank on Justin…. and I agreed (why not right?) let’s take a pic and then send the guys the pic and under it say ‘guess who’s getting a grill?'”
“I didn’t say it was a joke or anything… a few hours later, I get a text from Justin saying ‘call me’ and I’m like…. damn, he’s gonna be mad or tell me to take it down….”
“He says ‘cmon bro. is she really getting a grill? (I’ve talked to him enough on the phone to know his voice and different sounds, from regular to really happy) and he was definitely concerned like ‘please say it’s a joke’…. so I’m thinking to myself, like damn, I know in the last 3 hours he’s had to have talked to his girl and he had to ask her…. I can’t believe she’s really stringing this little prank along for so long…. she’s really cool for playing the joke for real! haha”
This Love
for @gorgxoxus
Summary: NOW: The New Directions rent a beach house to celebrate graduation. Blaine shouldn’t be here but he is. THEN: Kurt and Blaine talk about college. They have to break up.
AO3
NOW
Kurt was kicking his bare feet off the edge of the dock. The sun was scorching even though it was deep into the afternoon. However, the sky was turning into a deep blue, the same shade as the water below him. He hoped his friends would also want to stay to see the sun set.
“Kuuuurt!” Rachel yelled, “Join us!”
Most of the girls were paddleboarding on the bay trying to convince him to jump in for a swim. The boys were racing kayaks down the coastline. Only Mercedes had stayed back to take some photos and keep Kurt company.
It may have been a senior summer trip, the last time they’d all be together before moving out of Lima for college, but all of the New Directions came along.
“I just reapplied! It needs to set in,” he told her again.
It was like Rachel didn’t care about protection against skin cancer at all.
While Mercedes took pictures of their friends, Kurt watched the boys’ race. Noah was out in front but Blaine and Sam were close behind him in their separate kayaks. Blaine’s was a light blue, how the morning sky had been when he brushed Kurt’s hand when bringing him a cup of a coffee.
It had stung, Kurt remembers. Every touch from Blaine used to tingle, send shivers down his spine, and erupt butterflies in his stomach but now he just got hurt by them.
“So, Kurt, when are you going to tell him?” Mercedes suddenly asked, putting her camera down.
The race had ended. Looks like Sam had won if Blaine’s enthusiastic high five—that sent both him and Sam into the water—was anything to go by. They were struggling to get back into their kayaks but once they were upright again, all Kurt could focus on was how see-through Blaine’s shirt had become.
The white fabric clung to his chest. Some of his muscles were clearly outlined. Kurt had the urge to trace them. Even if it burned his fingertips.
Kurt drew his eyes away from the boys. “Tell who what?”
“Tell Blaine you still love him.”
He choked. “Excuse me?”
There was laughter out on the water. Brittany had fallen off her paddleboard after hanging ten. Trying to help her, Santana had gone in too.
“Oh, c’mon, boo,” Mercedes said, “I know you too well.”
“I’m not in love with him anymore.”
I’ve never gotten over him. I don’t know if I ever will.
THEN
The first thing Blaine did after completing his registration at McKinley High was ask about joining the glee club. He read about the New Directions on several show choir blogs; they were good. Maybe they had placed twelfth at Nationals last year in New York but how many American teams even competed? It was an impressive feat. His old glee club hadn’t made Nationals in over a decade.
The blogs making fun of them for the “Kiss That Missed” were wrong. It wasn’t a smart play on a national stage, sure, but they had certainly proven they weren’t just a messy group of singers from nowhere Ohio any more. The New Directions were a force to be reckoned with and Blaine wanted in.
They had rolling auditions so Blaine stood in front of the group on his very first day of classes. A dozen new faces eager to see if this curly hair mess of a boy could sing. Well, he could.
Blaine Anderson had been in vocal and dance lessons since he was a toddler. His parents raised two kids who craved stardom. Cooper moved to Hollywood as soon as he could to be in commercials and live on his own no questions asked and would hopefully move up from there. It took a few years but Cooper had been casted in a television show last October.
But Blaine wanted to write his own musicals or get a record deal after college. Both if he could swing it. He had the voice for it, he knew that much, and he had been writing songs for most of his teenage years. He just had never shown anyone his lyrics. Kept the sheet music he created hidden in a locked box under his bed.
When he finished, the team applauded. He saw several nods of approval but it was official when Mr. Schue, their director, offered Blaine a seat. He found an empty one beside a girl who wore all black. She introduced herself as Tina Cohen-Chang.
Soon, Blaine found himself a new best friend. Tina was dating Mike, who was on the football team. She was ecstatic to find out Blaine actually liked and understood the game. They went to every game they could together. If it was an away game, Tina would buy Blaine coffee and offer to drive as an incentive to join her. Not that he really needed one, he loved spending time with Tina.
After games they’d join the whole team for food, he had gotten to know them pretty well. They stayed clear of the non-glee footballers. No one wanted to spend more time with the people responsible for weekly slushees.
Sam was a chill guy and had a bunch in common with Blaine, including a love of Star Wars and comic books. Puck could be kinda raunchy but he meant well. Finn, male lead of New Directions, was the only one who Blaine couldn’t figure out.
Most of the time Finn ignored him but when they did interact he stared. Like he was trying to simultaneously intimidate and understand Blaine. Blaine was willing to overlook it. He didn’t need to be friends with everyone in glee.
Actually, there was only one boy he really wanted to talk to and Blaine didn’t exactly want to be just friends.
NOW
When everyone came off the water—yes Kurt did end up paddleboarding for a few hours—they all took turns showering before starting up the grill for dinner. Puck and Quinn were on duty tonight to cook, Rachel and Mike were on sides, Sam set the table, and Mercedes and Mike had to clean up.
Kurt finally had the night off. Once he had eaten his fill, he went for a walk. He was thinking about his conversation with Mercedes earlier.
Was it time to come clean? At least, he could admit it to himself. Being with Blaine had been the best six months of his life. For weeks after prom, after their fight, Kurt was positive he’d never see Blaine again after graduation. He clung to those rare sightings in the hallways of McKinley to memorize his face like he didn’t look at it every time he closed his eyes.
Then, two days ago, he saw Sam pulled up to the beach house they rented with Blaine in the passenger seat. He ran to the bedroom and collapsed. How awkward was it to have your ex-boyfriend present on your going away vacation?
Kurt watched from the window as they unpacked the car, Tina had rushed to greet them. He remembered seeing Blaine pick her up into a big hug and thinking all he wanted to do was go down there and hug back just as tight.
Fuck, he missed him. It had only been a month and a half since the breakup. Fresh wounds opened by the salty air.
He remembers kissing in the backseat of their cars after date nights. Running his fingers through those loose curls and Blaine tucking his hands into Kurt’s back pockets. Blaine would squeeze and Kurt would tug until Burt flickered the spotlights.
They held hands down the hallways. Kissed each other’s cheeks when they dropped each other off at class. On Wednesday mornings, Blaine brought Kurt a mocha from the Lima Bean because he had to help his dad open the shop before school and didn’t have time for coffee.
Kurt thought they had all the time in the world to love each other. Maybe he still did.
But being in love with someone didn’t mean everything worked out in the end, did it? His parents loved each other and they were separated by death. Kurt and Blaine? In just two months, they would have plenty of mileage dividing them.
Kurt was going to New York, Blaine wasn’t. Nothing could change that, not even a newly stitched together heart.
He’d be leaving a piece of himself behind, Kurt knew that and he was grateful that half of his heart would be with Blaine. Even when he was mad at him, Blaine was always his safe spot. Blaine would keep his brittle heart warm and maybe someday it would make its way back to Kurt.
Even if that meant Blaine never would.
THEN
Finn warmed up to Blaine once he realized he was gay. He admitted very sheepishly that he thought Blaine was trying to steal Rachel away.
“Just because we sing well together doesn’t mean we’ll date,” Blaine had assured him.
Secretly he hoped all his duets with Rachel had shown Kurt how well their voices could blend together if they gave it a chance. If he’d give Blaine a chance.
The first real opportunity Blaine had to talk to Kurt was during boys vs. girls week.
He slid into the desk next to Kurt. While Finn and Puck goofed off at the chalkboard, Blaine took his opening.
“Hi I’m Blaine,” he said, “I don’t think we’ve met properly yet.”
For the first time, Blaine got to stare into those blue eyes.
“Kurt.”
Blaine smiled at him. “I really liked your solo last week. It moved me to hear your twist on ‘I Wanna Hold Your Hand’ for you dad.”
The glee club had to pick someone they loved, non-romantic, to sing for as their weekly assignment.
“Thank you,” he beamed, “we used to listen to it all the time in the car together.”
After accomplishing exactly nothing, Blaine invited Kurt to coffee. There was this great coffee place near McKinley called The Lima Bean that Blaine had yet to try.
“Ooo, I love that place!” Kurt had said, “they make great baked goods.”
It had felt like a first date but that would come later.
NOW
When Kurt came back to the house everyone was sitting around the front porch with drinks in their hands.
“You’re back!” Rachel said, wobbling over to Kurt to hug him.
“How much have you had?” He asked, “I wasn’t even gone that long.”
“Two!” She exclaimed, holding up four fingers two on each hand.
“Okay then, let’s get you a seat.”
Tina came out from the house with two drinks, handing one to her boyfriend. “Oh Kurt, you’re back. Where’s Blaine?”
Oh God, did everyone know? Did Tina think Kurt had pulled Blaine away to make up? Or worse to make out? Did she know how he felt? More importantly, did she know how Blaine felt?
“Um, I have no idea.”
He thought his voice didn’t shake. His cheeks felt a little warm.
“Wait, we all thought he was with you,” she said.
“Where did he go?” Sam asked, standing up.
“I’ll text him!” Mike offered.
It wasn’t super late but it was odd for Blaine to venture off alone. Especially without telling anyone. They waited ten minutes to see if Blaine would reply to Mike. He didn’t.
Rachel was too drunk to go searching so Finn volunteered to stay with her at the house in case Blaine surfaced. Everyone made sure they had their phone before splitting up.
Kurt tried to call Blaine but kept getting his voicemail.
All he could think about was the last time he called Blaine. Their last conversation alone.
THEN
Blaine tried to avoid fighting. He may have learned to box but that was purely self defense. He hated confrontation. Except this was one fight he couldn’t run from. Not unless he was ready to lose everything.
At the time, Blaine had no idea he’d lose it all anyway. It wouldn’t matter how much he tried to keep it together, keep them together, that he’d fail anyway.
He’d learn once again, Blaine just couldn’t have nice things. He broke them and they were taken away every single time.
Kurt was the most precious thing Blaine had ever called his own. So, of course, he lost him in the worst way.
Some dreams were bigger than high school boyfriends. It’s just that Blaine had always thought they’d achieve those dreams together. They’d beat the odds of typical sweethearts. Kurt and Blaine were a love of the ages. Nothing could rip them away from each other.
Until college.
“I got in,” Kurt said. “A full scholarship.”
“I knew you would!” Blaine shouted.
They jumped around the Hummel's living room. Planning the weekend's celebratory dinner and just gushing over how wonderful this was.
It took another two weeks when Kurt was making lists of what to bring and not bring. Blaine had been sitting on his bed watching his boyfriend plan his future in New York. The city where dreams came true. God, he couldn’t wait to see where it would take Kurt. He was destined for beautiful things.
Then, Blaine opened his big mouth and asked, “what happens when I’m farther than Ohio? You’ll still let me spend weekends right?”
Kurt nearly dropped the picture frame in his hands. “What?”
“Well, I’m applying to California schools. Cooper’s gotta clean out a room for me at his place but he’s got a year to do it. I think that’ll be enough time,” Blaine laughed, “but we’ll take turns coming out to visit each other. It’s only 6 hours by plane.”
“California?”
“Yeah, didn’t we talk about this?”
“We most certainly did not.”
Looking back on it, Blaine was grateful the house had been empty.
Kurt called that night. On habit, Blaine picked up. They had a nightly call, he couldn’t have helped it if he tried. Plus, he was dying to make things right with Kurt again. He hated this emptiness in his chest. Like someone had ripped him up inside and left pieces of him on the cutting room floor when they put him back together.
“We can’t do this, Blaine,” Kurt said.
“Why not? Why can’t we try?”
“It’ll destroy you and me.”
Wouldn’t it be worth it to be together?
“You need physical affection. I can’t give you that miles away. Not if you’re in Ohio and especially not when you’re in California.”
“But I love you,” Blaine said, his voice cracking.
He could hear Kurt sniffing.
“I love you too.”
“It has to be enough.”
“It’s not, Blaine, and I’m so, so sorry.”
The line went dead.
NOW
He ended up back at the dock. Of course, there was Blaine swimming laps in the bay. Didn’t he know what time it was? Kurt wanted to yell out to him but decided to sit and wait for Blaine to come closer.
Blaine props himself up on the dock. His head resting on his tanned, muscled arms.
“Hey Kurt,” he greeted.
That signature cheeky smile. The one that made Kurt’s heart beat like crazy, the one that made his cheeks flush but thankfully it was too dark to see that now.
“Everyone was looking for you.”
“Oh yeah,” he said, “lucky me that you won.”
“Won? You think you’re a prize.”
Kurt didn’t gamble but he’d play the lottery every day for the rest of his life if it meant he had a chance at winning Blaine. Even if he didn’t get to keep him forever.
Blaine chuckled.
“Maybe you’re mine.”
Kurt turned away.
He couldn’t do this, jokingly flirt with Blaine. His chest was caving in. He wanted to cup his face and kiss him. He wanted to be able to do that without losing the rest of his heart.
“We can’t,” he told Blaine.
“I know.”
Blaine pulled himself out of the water and toweled off. It was silent except for the water slapping against the dock. Surprisingly, Kurt didn’t feel uncomfortable. He doubted he ever could with Blaine around.
There was nothing better than sitting shoulder to shoulder with him, even when they weren’t together anymore.
“I miss you,” Blaine murmured. “Every damn day, I miss you.”
And what was Kurt supposed to do with that? Nothing had changed. Blaine was in Lima for another year then he was off to LA to live with Cooper; Kurt would be attending college in New York, living with Rachel, and maybe designing clothes on the side. They couldn’t do this. It would only hurt worse when it ended.
Kurt didn’t want to be across the country when they finally decided enough was enough. That their paths wouldn’t cross again except when he heard Blaine’s original songs on the radio. When he’d fall apart in a store because the love of his life pursued his dreams without him.
“Me too,” he finally settled on. “I’m going to miss you for the rest of my life.”
“What if you didn’t have to?”
THEN
Blaine spent the weeks leading up to graduation in his bedroom. His parents thought he was just taking the breakup really hard, which was true, but Blaine was focused during those six weeks. He was determined to fix this, to fix them.
He called Cooper for advice. He searched for the right programs. He looked at financials. He studied harder for his SATs. For a brief moment, he considered just taking the GED test and skipping his senior year altogether. Finally, he sat down with his parents after dinner one night and told him the new plan.
For a junior, he knew more about what he wanted from college than most. Blaine had expected backlash and arguments about changing the game plan. Turns out his plans weren’t set in stone.
It was settled. Just in time for the New Directions’ beach trip.
Blaine called Sam to ask for a ride to the house and texted Quinn that he’d be able to make it and pitch it for the rent after all.
The day of the trip, Blaine was nervous. God, he hadn’t spoken to Kurt in weeks. Every time he tried, Kurt rushed off or Blaine felt like he was on the verge of tears. Was it stupid to believe he couldn’t be with Kurt? Some trivial, naïve belief made of teenage dreams?
“So, you’re getting back together?” Sam asked.
“What?”
“Well, that’s why you’re coming, right?” He turned the volume down. “To win Kurt back.”
Blaine blushed. He was more transparent than he thought.
“If he’ll have me,” he replied.
It was his worst fear. After Blaine got Kurt alone and explained everything, mapped out his plan for them, that Kurt would simply stare back at him and say he didn’t want it. Didn’t want him. Not anymore, it was too late for them.
“He will,” Sam said, confidently, stopping at a red light. “He loves you.”
“Sometimes,” Blaine said, remembering Kurt’s words, “love isn’t enough.”
“That’s bullshit.”
The car lurched forward.
“You two are, like, the longest lasting couple in glee. That’s gotta mean something.”
Blaine chuckled. “Longevity does not equal a happily ever after, Sam.”
“Well it should,” he said, “You and Kurt make sense.”
“In what way?”
“In every way, dude, that’s why you’ll get him back. He’d be a total idiot to turn you down. And no offense but Kurt’s like one of the smartest people I know.”
Blaine felt somewhat better after his prep talk with Sam but when they pulled up to the house, Blaine saw Kurt dart back inside. He felt helpless all over again.
NOW
“What if I don't have to,” Kurt repeated. “Of course, I have to, we have to, Blaine, because you’ll be in Ohio and neither of us can afford weekend trips back and forth. Then, in two years you’ll be on the other side of the country living with Cooper. If Ohio long distance can’t work, why the hell would LA to New York work?”
“I’m not going to California.”
Kurt goes on, not having heard Blaine speak. “I just can’t be in a relationship with you and not see you. Physically, see you, that is, video calls are fine and all but being in person, going on dates, holding you, kissing you...I need that Blaine and I know you do too.”
“Kurt,” Blaine said, grabbing one of his hands, “I’m not going to California.”
“What?”
“We can do long distance. I know we can. It’s just a year.”
Kurt nods, it’s just a year but what comes after is what worries him.
“You’ll be home over winter break. Maybe I can come up for Thanksgiving.”
“That's fine and dandy but what about after this next year,” he said, “what about your college plans?”
“I’m applying to NYU and a bunch of New York schools.”
“I won’t let you move to New York for me.” Kurt pulled his hand away. “That’s too much pressure on us. I can’t have you regretting that choice.”
“I want to be with you, in New York. I can find the same opportunities there as I can in LA except I’ll have my boyfriend instead of my brother.” Blaine reaches for his hand again. “Please, Kurt, you’re so much better than Cooper.”
He laughed. “Am I? I’ve met Cooper, he’s pretty great.”
Blaine smiled. “But I can’t kiss my brother.”
“I guess that’s true.”
They pause. Blaine squeezed his hand.
“So…what do you say?”
Kurt turned to look at Blaine. His eyes were watery but gentle like the tides.
“I love you,” he told him.
“I love you too.”
Kurt pulled his hand away and held out his pinky finger. Blaine hooked a pinky around it.
“Promise me, we’ll give this our all.”
“Promise,” Blaine swore.
They let their hands drop and sat together watching the stars.
Originally this trip was going to be Kurt’s way of getting over Blaine. At least to a point where he could leave come August without completely falling apart on the plane ride. There was enough to be stressed about when it came to school, he didn’t want Blaine to be one of those things. He thought he was going to come to accept that his relationship with Blaine was past tense, it was gone, dead.
Now, everything has changed. Once again, Blaine threw everything off course. When Blaine came in and totally changed Kurt’s life just by existing (hello, gay boy his age in Ohio, who actually liked him back?), he didn’t mind at all. Today, right now, sitting at the end of the dock with Blaine, Kurt didn’t mind having his plans completely altered.
He hadn’t wanted to break up. It just seemed like the option that would hurt the least. Of course, Kurt would never know if staying with Blaine while he went to college across the country would hurt more. That option no longer existed once they broke up and now the option was gone completely. Blaine would never be moving that far.
Not if Kurt had anything to say about it. From now on, he’d always know where Blaine was because they’d be together.
“Shit, you gotta answer your phone,” Kurt said, suddenly breaking the silence. “Everyone’s worried sick about you.”
“Oh,” Blaine said, sheepishly. “I texted Sam already, he knows we’re here.”
Kurt nudged Blaine. “This was planned!”
“Kinda.” Blaine rubbed the back of his neck. “I needed to get you alone.”
“You jerk!” Kurt stood up from the dock.
“Hold up, how else was I supposed to tell you?”
“Any other way!” Kurt yelled.
He was smiling though so Blaine knew he wasn’t truly mad. Still, the nerve of this boy. Planning some elaborate thing just to get Kurt back...he was so, so…
Kurt looked up at Blaine standing just inches away from him. He was romantic, Kurt thought. Without thought, Kurt cupped his face and kissed him.
Kissing Blaine had always been special but this kiss was different. So much poured into it. More than ‘I love you’ and ‘I want you.’ No, this kiss said ‘I need you’ and ‘don’t forget me, don’t forget how much I love you, how much you mean to me,’ and ‘I would die for the chance to love you forever.’
ROUGH ROAD TO TOP
August 16, 1953
(1)
One of the more famous CBS-TV shows is “I Love Lucy.”
Its two chief characters - Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz - have had a rocky road to their present status as one of the top comedy teams in the country.
At the end of Lucille's first year in dramatic school she was told by her teachers that she was wasting her time and money, that she would never become an actress. She was fired from all four of her first jobs as a chorus girl. Later, as a model, she almost lost her life in an automobile accident and was told she would never walk again.
Revolution Factor
It was a revolution in Cuba and a mishap in World War II which were fateful turns in Arnaz’ trip to stardom. The Cuban revolution destroyed his family’s wealth, drove them to the United States. World War II got him a broken kneecap in basic training, and since he had been a professional entertainer, he was placed in limited service and assigned to entertain hospitalized G.I.s'.
Columbia Pictures gave Lucille a contract as a stock player, and, convinced that her luck finally had turned, she sent for mother, grandfather, and sister to join her in California. But, the morning after she wired her family, the studio decided to dissolve its stock company. When the family arrived, Lucille was working as an extra at Paramount.
Bit parts and extra roles in a number of pictures kept Lucille busy, but not prosperous, until she was cast in ’"Roberta.” RKO officials, impressed by her work, gave her a contract. When not busy before the cameras, she was a mainstay of the studio's Little Theater. (2)
Offered Stage Lead
Her performance in the second lead in “The Girl from Paris" (3) drew Broadway's attention to Miss Ball and she was offered a lead in the musical "Hey Diddle Diddle.” After satisfying her yen to perform on the Great White Way (4), she returned to Hollywood for "Stage Door” and “Too Many Girls.” In the latter picture, she was costarred with Desi Arnaz. They were married Nov. 30 1940 in Greenwich, Conn.
Back from her honeymoon, Lucille walked into her first really big break a role in "The Big Street,” based on a story by Damon Runyon (5). Overnight it made her a star.
Her first assignment at M.G.M. in 1942 was the title role in the Technicolor production "Du Barry Was a Lady” (6). Stellar roles followed in "Best Foot Forward” and "Meet the People" (7). After completing "Easy to Wed” with Van Johnson (8), she headed for New York to be with her husband, then out of the army and on his way to success in the orchestra business.
Starred on Tour
Shortly after completing "Her Husband’s Affairs,” (9) Miss Ball went on tour as star of Elmer Rice's play "Dream Girl” (10) then worked with Sonny Tufts and Victor Mature in "Interference” for R.K.O. (11)
Lucille, Desi, arid their year-old daughter Lucy Desiree, live at Desilu, their five-acre ranch at Chatsworth, Calif. They raise cattle, chickens, dogs, and cats and dabble in farming. Enthusiastic fishermen they spend a lot of time on their boat.
Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y de Acha was born in Santiago, Cuba, son of the mayor. Desi’s mother, Dolores de Acha, was considered among the 10 most beautiful women In Latin America.
Three ranches totaling 100,000 acres, a palatial home in the city, a private island in Santiago Bay, speedboats, a fleet of motor cars, and a racing stable were all at the command of the youthful Desi during the pre-revolutionary days. His father, after eight years as mayor of Santiago, was made a member of the Cuban congress In 1932.
On Aug. 12, 1933, came the revolution. Congress was dissolved. Its members jailed. The Arnaz property was confiscated, the homes burned to the ground. In 24 hours everything was gone except $500 Desi's mother had hidden. Desi and mother fled to Miami, devoted the next six months to efforts to free Papa Arnaz. from prison. They were finally reunited in Florida.
For Desi, life in these United States for several years was hard but interesting: he worked at truck driving, train yard checking, taxi driving, bookkeeping, and, of all things, bird cage cleaning. Desi’s father managed to launch an importing business. It went broke when a shipment of fruit spoiled in transit.
Show business at this point finally caught up with Desi. His first job was playing guitar and singing with a seven-piece rhumba band at Miami’s Roney-Plaza Hotel (12). Xavier Cugat (13) spotted him, was impressed with this Cuban boy who was to be dubbed "The Tempo” by critics of modem music. After a year as featured vocalist with the Cugat band, Desi organized his own group of musicians and moved into the swank La Conga Café in Miami (14).
George Abbott's Broadway hit "Too Many Girls” (15) was Desi’s next step up the ladder, in 1939. He played a Cuban football player, one of the leads, and played tropical drums. RKO bought the film rights and signed Desi to play his stage role. When the shooting was over Desi married the leading lady, Lucille Ball.
He spent from Feb. 1943 to Nov. 1945 in the Army, after which he toured the nation with his band playing theaters, dances, night clubs. He hasn’t been without a band since. In 1948, Desi made the Columbia film "Holiday in Havana.” (16)
He made a vaudeville tour with Lucille Ball and that convinced them they’d do well as a husband-and-wife team on television. The tour inspired the CBS-TV show “I Love Lucy,” which has been highly rated since it started. (17)
Desi Arnaz’s personality is as vibrant as the music he makes. He is friendly, direct in manner, has flashing dark brown eyes and brown hair. He’s an avid fisherman, rides and swims expertly: his tennis is the envy of his San Fernando Valley neighbors, Sue and Alan Ladd, Francis Lederer, Jackie Oakie, and the Andrews Sisters. (18) A good cook, he specializes in such tempting dishes as Ginger Beef and Bouillabaisse.
FOOTNOTES FROM THE FUTURE
(1) The photo is from “Be a Pal” (ILL S1;E2) aired on October 22, 1951, nearly two years earlier. There’s one thing missing from this file photo: Vivian Vance. The success of the show was its foursome, not threesome! If you look closely you can see the hands of the other poker players, Richard Reeves (Hank, left) and Tony Michaels (Charlie, right).
(2) Lucille did several plays at the RKO Little Theatre under the direction of Lela Rogers (above), Ginger’s mom. When Lucille later bought RKO, she dubbed it the Desilu Playhouse, a training ground for new young performers, often hand selected by Ball herself.
(3) “That Girl from Paris” (not “The” as the article states) was Lucille’s 33rd film. The light-hearted musical romance earned an Oscar nomination for Sound Recording. It was released on the first day of 1937.
(4) Lucille was indeed cast in the Broadway-bound comedy (it was not a musical, however) “Hey Diddle Diddle!” It opened in Princeton, New Jersey, the first of several out-of-town stops on the way to Broadway. What Lucille’s publicity omits is that the show never got further than Washington DC due to the serious illness of its leading man, Conway Tearle. So Lucy’s Broadway debut would have to wait - until 1960!
(5) “The Big Street” opened on September 4, 1942. It was based on a Damon Runyan short story about a night club singer (Lucille) embittered by an accident that left her in a wheelchair and her romance with a naïve admirer (Henry Fonda) named Pinks. Lucy later said it was her favorite of the many films she made. It was her 55th film.
(6) “Du Barry Was A Lady” premiered in August 1943. It was Lucille’s 57th film, but her first for MGM. She nabbed the role from her friend Ethel Merman, who had done the Cole Porter musical comedy on Broadway. It was filmed in color, and was the film that earned her the nickname “Technicolor Tessie” because of her bright orange hair - a color she committed to from then on, despite her roots! This is the film that introduced Lucy to the song “Friendship”, which she would also sing on “I Love Lucy.”
(7) In the musical comedy “Best Foot Forward” (1943) Lucille Ball played herself. It was her 58th film. “Meet The People” (1944) was a romantic comedy for MGM, Ball’s 60th film.
(8) In 1946 she released her 63rd film, “Easy To Wed” co-starring Van Johnson and Esther Williams. Lucille and Van had appeared together in “Too Many Girls” and he would appear on Lucy’s television shows.
(9) “Her Husband’s Affairs” (1947) was a romantic farce with Lucy teamed with Franchot Tone. It was her 69th film.
(10) Back to the stage, Lucille accepted the leading role in a revival tour of “Dream Girl” a fantasy comedy by Elmer Rice. Once again, the play launched in Princeton, but this time Broadway was not the goal. It had already played the Great White Way two years earlier. The play toured the country at select cities, landing Lucille back in California in late 1947. In one SoCal gig she was appearing simultaneously with Desi and his band just a few blocks away. No doubt this was by design.
(11) RKO’s “Interference” was re-named “Easy Living” (1949) and dealt with the world of professional sports, namely football. It co-starred Victor Mature and Sonny Tufts. It was Ball’s 71st film.
(12) The luxurious Roney Plaza Hotel in Miami Beach was located on the corner of Collins Avenue and 23rd Street. It opened in 1925 and was demolished in 1968. The resort attracted a who's who that included Hollywood stars and even the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. The hotel's Bamboo Room & Restaurant was the place to be seen on the Beach for decades.
(13) Xaviar Cugat (1900-1990) was a Spanish musician and bandleader who spent his formative years in Havana, Cuba. A trained violinist and arranger, he was a leading figure in the spread of Latin music. In New York City he was the leader of the resident orchestra at the Waldorf–Astoria before and after World War II. He was a mentor and friend to Desi Arnaz, who kept his name before the public by making him a rival of Ricky Ricardo on “I Love Lucy” where his name became a punchline. In reality, Desi was grateful to Cugat, not jealous of him!
“I learned a lot from Xavier Cugat” ~ Desi Arnaz
(14) La Conga Café was located in New York City, not Miami, although the article may be referring to a different, lesser known establishment where Desi Arnaz performed. He became a regular headliner at La Conga, even issuing a record titled “La Conga” in 1939.
(15) Speaking of 1939 New York, Desi appeared in his only Broadway show in 1939, Rogers and Hart’s “Too Many Girls.” When the film rights were purchased by RKO, Desi was hired by director George Abbott to recreate his role. It was while filming this movie that he met Lucille Ball.
(16) “Holiday in Havana” was a Columbia picture released in October 1949. The film is about a Cuban hotel busboy (Arnaz) who dreams of becoming a composer. His love interest was not Lucy, but Mary Hatcher.
(17) The Tour incorporated some of the same routines seen in the “I Love Lucy” pilot as well as early episodes of the series, most notably the “Cuban Pete / Sally Sweet” duet. The tour culminated at the Roxy in New York City, where Desi was playing when he married Lucille in 1940.
(18) Before moving to their Beverly Hills mansion, Lucy and Desi lived on a ranch in Chatsworth in San Fernando Valley. They dubbed their ranch home Desilu. About their neighbors:
Alan Ladd (1913-64) was a chorus boy when Lucille was an Earl Carroll showgirl in Murder at the Vanities (1934). He was married to Sue Carol (1906-82) from 1942 until his death. Carol’s name was mentioned on “I Love Lucy” in “The Fashion Show” when Lucy selects the same Don Loper original that Carol has chosen to wear in the fashion show. She does not appear on screen.
Francis Lederer (1899-2000) was a Hungarian-born actor. In 1960 he did an episode of Desilu’s “The Untouchables”. From 1941 until his death he was married to Marion Irvine.
Jackie Oakie (1903-78) did four films with Lucille Ball between 1934 and 1938, including both “Annabell” movies.
The Andrews Sisters were the pre-eliminant close-harmony girl group of their time. The consisted of Patty, Maxine, and LaVerne. They were mentioned on “I Love Lucy” in “Be a Pal” in the same scene that the photo at the top of the article came from. In 1969, Patty Andrews guest-starred as herself on “Here’s Lucy”. Lucy and Lucie played the other two Andrews sisters.
“...Cautious young women came from all classes and backgrounds; so did those who proved most daring, experimenting, or free-spirited. Because young women of all classes had limited spending money, their most popular forms of public entertainment consisted of a variety of free, outdoor activities. For young women who lived in towns and cities, walking up and down shopping streets, looking at the window displays, evaluating the goods, discussing prices and styles, and occasionally making minor purchases while keeping an eye on other strolling shoppers provided a particularly popular form of entertainment.
In many towns, local choirs, musical ensembles, and military bands gave free Sunday afternoon concerts in public squares and parks, attracting especially young men and women, but also many working-class and lower-middle-class families whose budgets did not afford them other, more expensive forms of leisure activities. Without provisions for seating, these concerts provided ample opportunity to parade one's Sunday best, mingle, meet old friends and new acquaintances, chat, and exchange flirtatious glances.
Similarly, ice skating, another conventional pastime that attracted both young people and their parents, remained firmly within the boundaries of respectable behavior. Despite mixed-gender audiences, the participation of older adults in such activities contributed to their respectability, and even the most old-fashioned parents rarely objected to such outings. After all, shopping had long been a central component of middle-class women's leisure, and ice skating and military music hardly incited raucous behavior.
Equally popular among young women were new forms of commercial leisure activities that catered particularly, if not exclusively, to a cross class and mixed-gender clientele of adolescents and young adults. Movie theaters, for instance, attracted swarms of working-class and middle-class youths. Although many older contemporaries remained uncomfortable with the inappropriate mingling across gender and class lines and with the cheap thrills and seemingly loose moral standards of Hollywood films, young moviegoers found that the darkened auditorium offered hours of exciting, inexpensive, and easily accessible entertainment as well as a convenient place for meeting with friends and possibly engaging in courtship.
Enclosed swimming areas and public beaches also became increasingly important sites for fun, relaxation, and mixed-gender sociability in the 1910s and 1920s. While the immodesty and physical intimacy of "undressed, scantily dressed, and fully clothed people mixed together in one big confusion" often shocked traditional sensibilities, warm summer Sundays nonetheless brought such large crowds of young men and women to public beaches that popular wit soon dubbed them "flypapers."
Other popular arenas for spending leisure time included cafes and restaurants. Because of their limited resources, young women typically sought out places that served coffee and dessert rather than full meals. Yet because they were generally inclined to spend more time than money in such places, young women were often made to feel unwelcome. "If you knew the waiter, he would sometimes let you sit over the same cup of coffee all night long," Inger-Marie Rasmussen recalled, "but most often that was not possible. When a haughty waiter came by and asked if 'there was anything else?' for the second or third time, you knew it was time to go."
Besides, the presence of men who might be willing to pay the bill in exchange for female companionship made such places more precarious arenas for young women concerned about their sexual reputations. While straining limited budgets, an afternoon or evening in an amusement park was often easier to negotiate. Having paid a small entrance fee, visitors were free to stroll around, look at the various booths and rides, and enjoy free musical and theater performances, occasional fireworks, and other attractions without additional expenses.
Although some amusement parks were scorned by middle-class families because of their rowdy working-class clientele, others—such as the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen—were entirely respectable sites of entertainment for families as well as young, single people. Various forms of theatrical entertainment also appealed to young women. In community halls and neighborhood theaters, they enjoyed cheap slapstick comedies and amateur performances starring local talent and would-be actors.
In addition, hotels and restaurants frequently sought to lure customers into their businesses by offering some kind of stage performance as the opening act to an evening of dancing. The most popular form of theatrical entertainment was presented by the revue and vaudeville theaters that flourished in the 1910s and 1920s. Featuring evening programs of comical sketches, singing, and dancing, replete with chorus girls, lavish costumes, and elaborate stage settings, vaudeville shows attracted both young men and women looking for a good time, an easy laugh, and a spectacle of glamour and luxury.
Yet young women's participation was generally more limited than men's. Often the price of admission precluded them from attending, and sometimes the sexually suggestive character of songs and acts made them feel uncomfortable. Nonetheless, most young women managed to stay remarkably well-informed about the glamorous costumes, the musical hits, and new dance steps they generated. However, given the opportunity to choose freely among all available forms of fun and entertainment, most young women would probably not have opted for any of the amusements just mentioned. In the vast majority of cases, dancing topped their list of attractive recreational pursuits.
When, for example, the popular women's magazine Vore Darner in 1925 queried its readers about their favorite leisure activities, fully 72 percent of the respondents listed dancing as their first choice. Similarly, of the fifty-nine women interviewed for this project, at least fifty-four mentioned dancing as the favorite leisure activity of their youth. It is hardly surprising, then, that the rapidly expanding numbers of restaurants, cafes, hotels, inns, night clubs, and other establishments that offered dancing attracted vast numbers of young women. Nevertheless, public dance places remained highly controversial public settings for young women throughout the 1910s and 1920s.
Like other forms of entertainment that did not encourage community-based, intergenerational sociability, these settings were viewed with suspicion by older generations. The fact that crowded dance floors and lively music facilitated, even encouraged, easy and spontaneous physical intimacy between young men and women only heightened this suspicion. As a result, public dance places constituted an exciting, but also an especially dangerous and difficult terrain for modern young women eager to have fun without jeopardizing their reputations.
The tension between excitement and respectability was not unique to public dance places. The mixed-gender clientele and unsupervised mingling of city streets, skating rinks, public beaches, movie theaters, amusement parks, and variety shows could also throw into question the respectability of female participants. Therefore, public dance places merely represented the end point on a spectrum of controversial arenas for female leisure activities, simply heightening the conflicts young women experienced individually and in groups whenever they entered public space.
Although the companionship of female friends provided some measure of protection against potential dangers and missteps, it did not provide them with an inviolable safeguard. Even if young women trusted and depended on each other, there was always the nagging doubt that judgment calls of female friends might be wrong. As Meta Hansen poignantly remarked, "Having a girlfriend meant that you wouldn't get into trouble by yourself. It didn't mean you wouldn't get into trouble." Without female companionship, the likelihood of getting into trouble was simply too great for most young women to risk venturing out, but even the presence of female friends did not ensure safety.
To avoid making mistakes and more permanently minimize the risk of getting into trouble, young women therefore eagerly sought to determine what constituted appropriate and inappropriate behavior and activities. Throughout the 1910s and 1920s, they continually struggled to define the difference between the two, hoping to establish a set of rules that would ensure protection from moral reproach without sacrificing newfound possibilities for fun and excitement. Determining what constituted acceptable public behavior and activities was complicated by the fact that only a few public places and activities were entirely off limits for respectable woman.
Therefore, simply determining the respectable from the disreputable—and placing oneself on the right side of that line—was not an easy task. Going alone to a restaurant in the afternoon might be perfectly acceptable, for example, but enjoying a cup of coffee in the very same location at ten o'clock at night would be considered highly inappropriate. Waltzing with a young man on the skating rink was one thing; tangoing with him in a night club quite another. Similarly, if watching the latest movie release in a local theater or enjoying oneself in an amusement park in the company of girlfriends provoked only few raised eyebrows, going there alone or in the company of a man to whom one was not officially engaged was likely to generate both gossip and criticism.
"It wasn't so much what you did," Gerda Nybrandt declared when asked to explain what constituted proper behavior in her youth in Aarhus in the 1920s. "It was whom you did it with, and where you did it, and when you did it." Offering an almost identical explanation, Anna Eriksen remarked that "as long as it was daytime, people seemed to think that nothing immoral could take place. Doing the exact same thing when it was dark—now that was a different matter." Agnete Andersen recalled the code of conduct to which she adhered in a very similar way. "Well, how should I explain it?" she mused. "It was just like—you couldn't do this, but you could do that. It all depended on circumstances, whom you were out with, where you were and so on."
While in retrospect these three women maintained that "you just sort of knew" the boundary between acceptable and inappropriate public behavior, other evidence suggests that many young women at the time found determining that line an exceedingly difficult task. The fact that reliable sources of guidance were hard to come by only compounded the problem. Certainly, given their already contentious relationship, most young women did not turn to their parents for advice, and those daughters who did seek their guidance often found the older generation as confused and uncertain as they were themselves.
Since the vast majority of young women were already out of school, advice from teachers was rarely an option available to them, and adult leaders of youth clubs, concerned about their standing with parents, were generally cautious and restrictive in their counsel. Writers, intellectuals, and newspaper editors steeped in older traditions of female domesticity also seemed unqualified to guide their path. And especially in urban areas, where organized religion already had lost much of its grip on young people, the prospect of going to a minister for advice never seemed to enter their minds.
In this void, young women tended instead to look to self-proclaimed etiquette experts and advice columnists for suggestions on how to negotiate public behavior and city life. The sheer quantity of letters to women's magazines and advice columns about proper behavior speaks both to the uncertainty women felt and to the significance they attributed to knowing the limits of their new freedoms. In letter after letter, young women consulted these self-proclaimed experts both about the appropriate nature of planned events and about the specific restrictions they ought to place on their escapades.
Could a young woman go out alone at night, they wondered? If so, could she casually stroll city streets without being taken for a street walker? Could she smoke cigarettes in public? Could she wear makeup? What about high heels? Could she go to a movie theater? If so, how late? And how frequently? What about an amusement park? A restaurant? What if the restaurant featured live music and dancing? Could she go out alone if she returned home before a certain time? If so, at what time ought she be safely indoors? In response, editors of women's magazines and advice columnists generally offered very specific guidance, usually in the form of strict, inflexible directives.
"No, a young lady may not go to a restaurant alone at night," one columnist warned. "A nice girl should always be home by 11 P.M.," another enjoined her female readers. And no, a respectable young woman could "absolutely not under any circumstances" wear makeup in public—aside from "lipstick and perhaps a touch of rouge." Often, however, the logic that guided advice columnists' directives seemed incoherent, even arbitrary, and frequently their answers seemed to lack a systematic pattern. When, for instance, one advice columnist maintained that "it is perfectly acceptable for two young girls to go for an evening walk, but a group of girls strolling the streets after dark is an unfortunate phenomenon," she might very well have added to the confusion and uncertainty her readers already felt.
Moreover, while generally encouraging women to avoid being alone in public and being out too late, the advice columnists frequently differed among themselves in their assessment of what constituted proper behavior. When asked almost identical questions in 1928, Sondags B.T. declared that a young woman could absolutely not go to the theater alone, while Ugebladet found it perfectly admissible "as long as [she] makes sure to sit in the front of the theater and leaves immediately after the show."
Such disparate pieces of advice in publications that did not otherwise represent different political and cultural perspectives underscore how confusing and unsettled the standards for women's public behavior remained throughout most of the 1920s and how difficult it was for young women to find the kind of guidance they were seeking. Paradoxically, the only rule constantly reiterated was the one young women already knew and worried about—namely, that there was a boundary between respectable and disreputable behavior and that stepping over that boundary would have consequences that even young women who insisted on being "modern" and leading "modern" lives were not willing to risk.”
