The British actor, who broke out in Netflix’s spooky anthology series from Mike Flanagan, speaks to Tom Murray about his thrilling new movie ‘Jackdaw’, his pride at appearing in ‘Hollyoaks’, and why he thinks he’s ‘too emotional’ to play 007.
Ihave this thing in my head,” Oliver Jackson-Cohen is telling me. “I don’t know where it comes from, but I am always convinced that everything I do is going to be s***. So I’m always pleasantly surprised that it’s not as s***ty as I think.”
The London-born actor really doesn’t need to be so anxious. Since landing his breakout role of heroin addict Luke Crain in Mike Flanagan’s Netflix anthology series The Haunting of Hill House in 2018, Jackson-Cohen has proven time and again his skill at playing damaged goods. Whether it’s his sociopathic turn as businessman Peter Quint in Flanagan’s sequel series The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020), or as Dakota Johnson’s terrifying boyfriend in The Lost Daughter (2021), or as Elisabeth Moss’s see-through ex in The Invisible Man (2020), Jackson-Cohen has cemented himself as one of Hollywood’s go-to baddies.
But in his latest film, the 37-year-old is taking a stab at being the hero... sort of. Jackdaw is set against a bleak, wintry North East of England, with Jackson-Cohen playing an ex-motocross champion and army veteran who commits a crime in the hopes of starting a new life for his family.
The actor is the first to admit that the Jackdaw script was “fairly straightforward” for the action-thriller genre: a criminal job goes awry, family member gets kidnapped, man must save kidnapped family member. But he says that the film’s director, first-timer Jamie Childs, wanted to prove that genre films like these don’t have to be the preserve of the US. “He wanted to make movies that would be made in America in the Nineties, but set in the North East,” Jackson-Cohen explains. “He wanted to really showcase that and show that we can make these sorts of high-concept movies on small budgets in the UK.”
There are blatant American influences on the film – it’s all synths, rain and neon, like it’s been put under an Instagram filter named “Blade Runner”. I tell Jackson-Cohen that his character in the film, Jack Dawson, feels like a mash-up of Ryan Gosling’s criminal characters in Drive (2011) and The Place Beyond the Pines (2012) – brooding, morally questionable types with good hearts at their core. “Yeah, like a Northern, poor man’s Ryan Gosling,” he jokes. “Listen, I’ll happily be a poor man’s Ryan Gosling for the rest of my life.”
Jackson-Cohen has a face that looks like it’s been carved by Bernini, so it’s no surprise to learn he originally found success as a model. On the day of our conversation, he’s wearing a frame-fitting black jumper; his stubble is grown out but perfectly manicured, as is his thick brown hair, which is styled into a messy quiff. A 2012 Harper’s Bazaar interview conducted at a London hotel noted a “perceptible thrill” that “rippled through the female staff” upon his arrival. His looks, accent and 6ft 3in height have also made him a perennial fixture in predictions for the next James Bond. But Jackson-Cohen is worried he’d be “too emotional” to play the part. “It’s such an iconic character, isn’t it?” he says. So if 007 producer Barbara Broccoli were to call, he’d send her to voicemail? “Of course not! No one’s gonna say no to Babs are they?”
If he does end up firing guns and sipping martinis for a few years, Jackson-Cohen would be the first Bond to have appeared in Hollyoaks, the teen soap infamous for its annual Hunks and Babes cast calendars. He booked a single-episode role on the show when he was 15 – his first acting gig. “I remember getting the phone call and being like: ‘This. Is. It,’” he says, grinning. “Walking into school the next day I was so full of myself.”
After training at London’s Youngblood Theatre Company and then the famed Lee Strasberg Institute in New York, he began booking supporting roles in a number of American films you probably don’t remember: the Dwayne Johnson clanger Faster (2010), Anna Faris’s What’s Your Number? (2011), or Going the Distance (2010), one of Drew Barrymore’s lesser romcoms. He’s spoken previously about the grand expectations he placed on his early film work, assuming they’d propel him into the big leagues. He was shattered when they didn’t, leading him to take a nine-month break from acting.
The Haunting of Hill House, in 2018, proved to be a turning point. It was a smash hit, earned him a rabid fanbase, and helped launch him into a particular kind of recognition something he describes as “Netflix famous”. “It’s quite an interesting thing,” he says. “You’re the most famous person in the world for a while and then the next show comes along and that completely takes over.”
Regardless, the role was not without catharsis for him. He has spoken about how his own experience with childhood sexual abuse and PTSD influenced his take on the character. He first discussed it in 2017, during the #MeToo movement, writing on Instagram: “[I] have spent most of my life living with PTSD, pretending it didn’t happen, and now, trying to rebuild what was shattered. The thing about sexual abuse is that the moment it is done, however brief or however long, it changes the course of your life permanently.”
I ask him how the part impacted him, and for the first time in our conversation, the actor’s geniality falters and his face takes on a visible strain. “I think, if you speak to any of us from that cast, those characters meant so much to us because we put so much of ourselves into them,” he says. Flanagan, he says, was “incredibly collaborative” and “allowed me to just take the reins with it and left me alone to do that.” He also knows the part struck a chord with audiences. He remembers being approached by strangers in public who’d share their stories of addiction. “I think ultimately all of us feel incredibly proud that it hit a note with people and it allowed people to open up a discussion, to feel like they could talk about this stuff.”
As soon as Hill House was released, Jackson-Cohen says he was sent “a slew of horror scripts” that were “all the same thing, just a watered-down, less good versions [of the show]”. He names Ira Sachs’s raunchy gay drama Passages, Jonathan Glazer’s new Holocaust film Zone of Interest and Justine Triet’s awards season darling Anatomy of a Fall as films he’s admired from afar this past year. “I don’t think there’s a formula of: you work with this director and this writer and then, success. But I do think you reach a point where you’re like, ‘Oh I do actually want more out of this.’”
He knows, for instance, that he’s seen a certain way by casting directors. “I’ve played quite a lot of toxic men. But I’ve become fascinated with the question of, ‘how do we humanise these morally corrupt characters?’ There’s a challenge in that, which I think is quite fun. But, like anything, you go through periods where you like to play a certain thing and then it’s time to move on.”
So no more baddies? He weighs it up.
“I think I’ve played my fair share now.”
‘Jackdaw’ is in cinemas now.

American Gods News
7. AMERICAN GODS
Why should we be watching? Ex-Hollyoaks hunk Ricky Whittle becomes the bodyguard to Ian McShane, who turns out to be something of an Old School God, who is slowly amassing an army to fight the New School Gods, which includes Gillian Anderson dressed as David Bowie and Marty McFly's Dad as Mister World. It would definitely win Best Looking/Weirdest Show on TV Right Now award if it wasn't for what comes in at No.3.

Seven suspects...
Digital Spy revealed that seven different scenes are being filmed showing various different characters as Amy's attacker. Cast and crew will film the special scenes next week, but only one will ever be shown on TV when the story comes to a head later in the year.
My speculation:
Ste: Nope, way too obvious. He will be the one tried and convicted though.
Harry: One of the prime suspects IMO as revenge against Ste for cheating on him and humiliating him. Ste's complete lack of remorse and treatment toward him after the reveal would only fuel the fire. There was a bit of foreshadowing with DS Armstrong joking at the wedding that Harry had blood on his hands after knocking off the cake topper. The figure running through the woods and washing blood off his small, boyish hands was wearing a dark hoodie and that's what Harry was wearing in yesterday's episode. Harry also told James that Ste wasn't going to get away with his bad behavior anymore. Is this perhaps a clue that Harry has set up some sort of revenge against Ste? Maybe after the spat between him and Ste outside The Dog where Ste shoves him and tells him they're over will push Harry over the edge? Harry was also a bit drunk and people can do some shocking things under the influence. Or are these clues too glaringly obvious and there will be a twist?
Ryan: Unless Amy had a change of heart last minute and told Ryan she wanted to stay in Hollyoaks, I don't see why he would kill his new bride. And even then it would be a stretch, why not just try to convince her instead of bludgeoning her to death? Unless he accidentally kills her in a violent argument? As a policeman he would know how to cover up his tracks or plant damning evidence against someone else. He does seem one of the most expendable as his character only really exists for Amy. Though Duncan James from Blue is quite the popular hunk (and miraculously snagged a Best Newcomer nomination at the NTAs) so they might want to keep him around for eye candy as there is a shortage on 20 and 30 something year old men at the moment. Plus in interviews it always sounds like he plans on staying for a long time.
Mercedes: No motive whatsoever. Ridiculous that she's even considered. Yes, she has killed before, but with good reason. I don't see her randomly killing Amy, especially since she was busy retrieving her phone from James' flat when she saw the shadow (and I don't even think the shadow was the killer, just a red-herring).
James: James is not a violent man. Has he gone to extremes before? Yes. Is he capable of murdering an innocent woman just for revenge against Ste for sleeping with John Paul? No, especially given how maturely he's handled the affair since John Paul's exit. He doesn't even seem to be vindictive towards Ste at all (unless he's planning a slow burn revenge in secret). I really can't see him being the one to commit the crime, but I do possibly see him either being in on it or covering up/planting evidence for someone. This only works if Harry is the actual killer. James could possibly have made some sort of plan with Harry that the audience wasn't privy to and they were in on it together. Or Harry murders Amy and he and James plan to frame Ste for it. When Ste is convicted, Harry might convince James to take the case and sabotage it so Ste gets locked up. So it makes sense that he could be involved, but I don't think he's a murderer.
DS Armstrong: Just because he was revealed as a stalker doesn't mean he has it in him to kill an innocent woman. There isn't a big connection there for me. Plus he's probably too preoccupied with fapping over Leela. 7th mystery suspect: Since we don't know who it is I can't really speculate. But it would be such a cop out if it weren't someone related to Amy's storyline.

EMMERDALE hunk Danny Miller sparked a war on the ITV soap after bedding co-star Isabel Hodgins behind the back of Dales pal Michael Parr. Danny, 25, who plays Aaron Dingle, had a fling with Isabel who plays Victoria Barton, after they grew close last year. And the pair hid their trysts from Michael, 29, who had dated 22-year-old Isabel, and Danny’s on/off girlfriend, Hollyoaks’ Kirsty-Leigh Porter. Sneaky ... Emmerdale star Danny beds Isabel Hodgins, right, behind back of Mike Parr, left
The source went on: “Isabel and Michael also stopped seeing each other after her romance with Danny came out. “They got back together, and that went some way to improving the situation between him and Danny, although there is still tension. “They seem to have accepted that they have to work together, so they might as well put what happened behind them and get on with it.” After the revelations, Isabel – who had previously posted cosy snaps with Michael on her Instagram page – stopped featuring the star. But in December she again posted a picture of herself with him and a group of pals, captioned: “This is how we love life.” She posted a snap of them embracing one another just last week. The source went on: “They’ve patched things up. But it doesn’t look as if the same will happen with Danny and Kirsty-Leigh. She’s had enough of being the woman scorned.” Floats my boat ... Danny and Kirsty-Leigh kiss in Lake District Floats my boat ... Danny and Kirsty-Leigh kiss in Lake District BCD Media But Isabel kept close to Danny who she was pictured embracing at the soap’s 2014 end-of-year party. Sources said she and Danny, who reunited with Kirsty-Leigh in January 2015, were secretly dating just months later. Michael, who was involved in an on-screen love triangle with Pete Barton (Anthony Quinlan) and Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb) had no idea he was caught in a real-life drama. Isabel and Danny have insisted they were single when they got together. But a source close to Kirsty said: “Just days before she found Isabel’s messages, Kirsty-Leigh was tweeting about how in love she was with Danny. “It was a bombshell for her. “It’s well known she and Danny have had a rocky relationship, but she thought he’d learnt from his mistakes and things seemed to be going well. “After she found out about Isabel, she tried to forgive Danny. “They even went on a holiday to Lanzarote. “But it was a big part of the reason she finally ended the relationship and moved out last year. “She couldn’t cope with what had happened in the end. Check mates ... Isabel gives Michael a hug as they relax together Check mates ... Isabel gives Michael a hug as they relax together “She was furious. “She felt hurt and betrayed. Michael was also angry. “He thought he and Danny were close friends. “The tension between them caused major problems on set, because Michael made it crystal clear he didn’t want to be around Danny. “The revelations caused arguments among the cast who split into two camps over who to support. “Most sided with Michael, which left Danny feeling almost like an outcast. “There has been very little sympathy for him over how he has acted in this.” Isabel, Emmerdale’s longest-running actress, has played Victoria since she was 12 and her character has had flings with Danny and Michael’s characters. She began secretly dating Michael, who joined Emmerdale in 2013, in real life last summer. The pair let the cat out of the bag on July 15 when each posted snaps from identical locations while on a romantic break in Paris. The revelations split the cast, with most siding with Michael — making Danny feel like an “outcast”. The source said: “Isabel and Danny thought they could keep their romance secret but when Kirsty-Leigh saw the texts on his phone, the game was up. Sneaky ... Michael, the show’s Ross Barton, was also said to be livid when he found out and fell out with Danny. The pair shared a dressing-room on set.

Meet Krypton’s Wallis Day - THE badass heroine we have been waiting for
http://fashion-trendin.com/meet-kryptons-wallis-day-the-badass-heroine-we-have-been-waiting-for/
Meet Krypton’s Wallis Day - THE badass heroine we have been waiting for
Wallis Day may be the star of Krypton – a new TV tale based around the origins of everyone’s favourite lycra clad hunk, Superman – but IRL she doesn’t need a coy cape and directional Dynasty shoulders pads to appear badass.
My first encounter with the 23-year-old came on one of the hottest summer days at the Audi Polo. Whilst many use this event as their only opportunity in the year to channel their inner Julia Roberts circa that ‘polka dot dress moment’, Wallis tackled ‘reveal and conceal’ head on with a white skirt suit and an unapologetic black lace bralette. “What a queen,” was my immediate thought and the lewk summed up everything that Wallis is, she is an actress who is so unapologetically her.
But as I call her for this interview I wonder: how badass actually is Wallis in comparison to her hardened Princess-esque character, Nyssa? “I mean I do have to do stunts in the show,” Day declares proudly. Laughing she continues, “We are a similar level! Don’t get me wrong I don’t murder people, but I think we don’t take sh*t!” See – I told you she was a Queen!
Think of Wallis as the ‘edgier’ British version of Jennifer Lawrence with the vivacious personality and captivating talent to match. For instance, the first four minutes of our interview is practically inaudible for our incessant giggling – such is the infectious nature of one of our best-rising actresses, who initially honed her craft in Hollyoaks.
For those who haven’t exactly been Keeping Up With Krypton, Wallis assures me that you don’t have to be well versed in comic books to enjoy this humanised hoot. “The characters really speak for themselves. I never really knew much about that world until Warner Brothers and DC dumped a load of comics in front me and said, ‘you have nine months before we start filming – so read!’”
But prepare yourself as Wallis’ skills at building a fully-fledged three-dimensional character in a supernatural setting (a rare feat!) means much like the actress herself, you are going to be geeking out hard. As she confesses, “I actually got really into it and was reading up loads and watching all the films! I am definitely a bigger geek than ever before now.”
Nothing could, however, prepare Wallis for her induction into the Comic-Con World which I can attest in the immortal words of Mis-Teeq is so so scandalous, “Comic-Con was literally bat sh*t crazy in the best way imaginable. I can’t even describe it to you. I found it quite nerve racking, especially the panel – where we talked about the show – because it is when the comic book fans stand up they ask really intimate questions about things I haven’t even learnt yet as they really know their sh*t!” Praise be the lord for Google, then?
Geek chic, however, has never looked so good on anyone as illustrated by Wallis’ equally badass peroxide blonde lid. The process of chopping off her long locks had a metamorphic effect on of superhero proportions on her, despite it meaning she had to labouredly dye her hair every night ahead of filming. “I have had long blonde hair my whole life and when I cut my hair I finally felt like it had caught up with my personality,” Wallis shares. “I am a bit of a rebel, so I kept the long blonde hair for auditions as that is what I thought casting directors wanted but it’s brought a new wave of freedom and confidence. I am so much more me now. I literally booked three jobs the week after and I think that was my aura and my vibe in the room- that made a difference!” Her refreshing attitude is making me wanna reach for the hair dye and get scissor happy – STAT!
Going blonde wasn’t the only game-changing thing Wallis pulled the trigger on recently, gurl went vegan with quite the results. “Since I became vegan last year my mood and energy levels have plateaued but in a good way as they are really steady now,” Wallis confides. “I never really feel fatigued anymore – that changed my life, that changed everything. First of all, it was due to the way that animals are treated, and I thought, ‘hell no, I am not contributing to that,’ so I educated myself on what was really going on. But my reasons really tie into one – the changes to my mood are what kept me vegan!” When I compare it to the kind of clarity we get when one wakes up on Sunday without a hangover, Wallis characteristically howls.
Is Meghan Markle vegan or a fegan? Here are the vegan celebrities who are making us wanna eat veg
Much has been made of how the supernatural universes inhabited by DC characters and Marvel stars alike are rapidly becoming more inclusive of the real-life world we actually live in. It’s something Wallis is equally championing. “It is heading in the right direction. I think these are characters who have been deprived of airtime for a really long time, so I am over the moon that they are finally getting their time to shine.” Can we get a here, here in here?!
But with casting calls infamously being called into question Wallis speaks with caution about the steps we still need to undertake to ensure our entertainment is truly representative. “I think it’s really important that they are cast correctly – that is a really important aspect and that the writers really understand what they are writing about. I think it’s important to get an opinion in the room from the person who has actually experienced what is being written about and point the script, the filming and the portrayal correct.” W.O.R.D.
But like the character who is born of Krypton, what does Wallis want to stand for a-la Superman? With her growing Instagram following of 213k – which I proudly count myself as one of, after all, Wallis is the definition of ‘girl crush’ – she is all too aware of her growing responsibility. “I think it is really important that with those followers comes a sense of responsibility. It took me a long time to realise that.”
A new superheroine in the making, then? Wallis continues, “Growing up I had really strong female role models and I think it’s really important to not feel pressure to be a role model but just be the best person you can be. It’s taken me a long time to get to that point, but I am still growing, and I am still learning every day.” There lies the charm of Wallis, just like us she is still just figuring it all out. Watch this space because we certainly are.
‘Krypton’ is on E4 every Sunday at 9pm and you can catch up on All 4 now.
