I know people believe that pre-Azkaban, 1979-1981 Sirius would be very Bowie obsessed, but I like to think that his Muggle musical taste (if he had any interest) would be something like a type of jazz that’s too complicated for regular people to get into, OR 70s rock that evokes the American Southwest. (Also, since the wix community seems to be a few years behind the Muggle community culturally, I think it would make sense if Sirius weren’t necessarily ‘up to date’ on popular music—ESPECIALLY since he’s busy fighting in a vigilante group against Voldemort.)

Like I have a hc that he really wanted to ride through the desert with his cool leather jacket, cruising from town to town, no one telling him what to do, etc. I just feel like American Muggle Motorcyclist Harley Davidson Diesel-Smell Guy is SO antithetical to pureblood magical Britain.

Anyway, I like to think Allman Brothers’ “Midnight Rider,” The Hollies (a British band!) “Long Cool Woman,” or anything Creedence Clearwater are right up his alley.

In which the profiler does an excellent job of profiling John. And she’s right that he’d be a terrible father, but I don’t think all that stuff means he’s undatable. Book recs for romance novels where the heroine puts a finger in the hero’s ass (or vice versa)?

After serving as Aide-de-camp to his late father's friend, General Morgan Lewis, until June of 1815, Alexander resumed law practice and “paid his addresses to” Eliza P. Knox. [x] Eliza was the daughter of Thomas (Records sometimes name him William) Knox and Mary Hester “Kortright” Knox. Mary was the sister of Elizabeth Monroe, James Monroe's wife. And Knox was at that time a leading merchant in New York City. Her birthdate and location of birth are both unknown, unsubstantial sources vary between her birth year being around 1796 or 1801.

In 1817, Alexander married Eliza. According to John Pintard, Eliza and Alexander eloped and ran away from the Knoxs' initially, before matters were resolved;

The father wd not consent & a runaway match ensued. A reconciliation took place a year after, when Prest Monroe visited this city, Mrs Knox, deceased, & Mrs M. being sisters.

It is possible Alexander, perhaps with his wife, went and saw his uncle-in-law - James Monroe - on his deathbed. As he writes devastatingly to James Madison, [30 June 1831];

The newspapers having announced the dangerous indisposition of your much respected friend Col James Monroe, I have the melancoly task of informing you that his death is inevitable, and will most probably take place before this reaches you. Mr Monroe retains entire possession of his mental faculties and with perfect firmness and integrity awaits his demise.

In 1833, Alexander bought from Thomas E. Davis a Federal style townhouse constructed two years prior for his mother and his family in New York City, located at 4 St. Mark's Place in the East Village section of Manhattan, for $15,500. At the same time, Davis purchased The Grange from Elizabeth - age 76 years old - for $25,000. For nine years, from 1833, to 1842, Alexander and his wife Eliza, lived there with his mother, his sister Eliza Hamilton Holly, and her husband Sidney Augustus Holly (Yes, that's three whole Elizas'). The house still survives to this day, and is known as the Hamilton-Holly house.

In 1835, Eliza and Alexander drove in a coach and four through the West travelling over four thousand miles. It was on this trip, in Illinois, where he met Abraham Lincoln in a grocery store. Lincoln was reportedly; “lying upon the counter in midday telling stories.” [x]

When Eliza Knox died July 21st of 1871, Alexander moved to New Brunswick, New Jersey. Before residing in New York City, where he lived his last few years before dying August 2nd, 1875, at his home, 83 Clinton Place, in Greenwich Village. The couple seemed to have been happily in love, and never had any children.

February 3, 1959 — The Day the Music Died. 

Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, “The Big Bopper” J.P. Richardson, and their pilot, Roger Peterson, die in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa. Holly leaves behind millions of adoring fans, a pregnant wife and a legendary 1958 Ariel Cyclone Motorcycle.

May 13, 1958 - Buddy Holly and his Crickets bandmates, Joe Mauldin and Jerry Allison, land in Dallas after a world tour. They go straight to a Harley-Davidson dealership looking to buy three Harley 74 flatheads. The salesman is skeptical that the three young men from West Texas have the wherewithal to purchase three of his expensive motorcycles, and tells them so. Put off by the rude salesman, the boys go across town to Miller’s Triumph Shop. This time, Buddy introduces himself and produces a large amount of cash to ensure that it is known they are serious buyers. It is probably not necessary because Betty Miller, co-owner of the Shop with her husband, Ray, recognizes Buddy and the Crickets the moment they come in.

Mauldin picks out a red Triumph Thunderbird. Allison goes for a Triumph Trophy TR6A. Buddy buys the new 650cc Ariel Cyclone — one of only 200 ever made.

That summer, between tours and television appearances, Buddy and his friends are often seen riding their motorcycles around town in Lubbock.

October 1958 — Buddy Holly splits from The Crickets.

Early 1959 — Buddy Holly is touring the Midwest with his new band, including bassist Waylon Jennings. Also on the tour are rising artists Ritchie Valens and “The Big Bopper” J.P. Richardson. The going is rough aboard cold, uncomfortable buses and, frustrated by the conditions, Holly charters a plane from a performance in Clear Lake, Iowa to the next stop in Moorhead, Minnesota. Holly bandmate Tommy Allsup and Valens toss a coin for a seat on the plane — Valens wins. Waylon surrenders his seat to Richardson, who is sick.

Buddy Holly & Waylon Jennings February 3, 1959, 12:30 am — Holly, Richardson and Valens take off with Peterson, their 21-year-old pilot. The rest is history. Buddy Holly was 22 years old when he died. Richardson was 28. Valens was 17. Waylon lives on to be one of the most legendary country music artists of all time.

Buddy’s father keeps his Ariel Cyclone until 1970 when he trades it to Nub Stovall, a local racer, for two Yamaha 55cc Trailmasters. Stovall sells the Ariel to another individual, who tries to resell it to a local Honda dealer, George McMahan, for $1000. McMahan wants the bike, but does not have the funds.

Waylon Receiving His Birthday Present 1979 — Former Crickets Mauldin and Allison want to do something special for the 42nd birthday of their old friend, Waylon Jennings. They track down Buddy’s motorcycle to the man who still owns it in Austin, Texas. They buy the bike and have it delivered to an empty hotel room in North Texas where Waylon is on tour. Upon seeing his gift — at midnight — the outlaw Waylon jumps on the bike and kick starts it right there in the hotel room, to the delight of the other guests. Waylon only rides the Ariel a couple times and then lends it to the Johnny Cash Museum in Nashville.

2002 — Waylon Jennings passes away.2014 — The Ariel is auctioned off as part of Waylon’s estate. George McMahon has his second shot at owning the legendary bike. (McMahan had done well as a land developer in Lubbock and now had the means to buy the Ariel.) At auction, the bike quickly is bid up to $475,000 and McMahan bows out, fearing he has missed his chance again.

But fate is with McMahan. The Ariel does not reach the seller’s minimum and does not sell at the auction. Jessi Coulter, Waylon’s widow, is taking offers based on price AND intended use. McMahan makes his offer and specifies his use — riding the bike just one time and then loaning it to he Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock. Done deal.

A meditation on fruitcake:

Back in the 1960s, when my age was still in the single digits, my mother baked several fruitcake loaves each October or November; in December, she gave them to our neighbors and other people we knew. She seemed to feel that baking and eating fruitcake was a rather daring thing to do. She later explained to me that she knew nothing about fruitcake — it had never even crossed her path, apparently �� until her first marriage.

My mother’s first husband wasn’t Jewish. He was brought up as a Seventh-Day Adventist — the son of missionaries in Africa, in fact. (I really must tell the story of my mother’s first marriage in this space some time. Tumblr needs me to do so, in fact. People will be shocked, but it’ll be a salutary, edifying shock.) By the time he and my mother were married, his parents were retired and living in Nebraska. My mother was at that point a life-long New Yorker. Imagine the exoticism of Nebraska! When he and my mother went to visit them, apparently sometime one autumn, his mother was baking her annual batch of fruitcakes. My mother was quite fascinated by this. Her mother-in-law gave her a recipe.

The point, of course, is that for my mother, fruitcake was in some way not Jewish. She had a point: fruitcake = Christmas. Consider, though, what I found in the October 7th, 1943, issue of The Sentinel, a Jewish weekly published here in Chicago:

Davidson's never had a store in my part of town, but they did make regular deliveries to Mr. G.'s, a supermarket near me. The bakery went out of business about 40 years ago. I can't remember whether it was kosher (I tend to think not; here’s a photo of the branch at 1617 West Howard Street, and as you can see there’s no sign in the window indicating that that it is), but the company did see fit to take out a half-page display ad promoting fruitcake as a Hanukkah gift. It does travel well over long distances, to be sure, and I’m betting that the illustration at the top came from stock (look at those sprigs of holly!), so it’s possible that the company was simply taking advantage of the opportunity to push an unfamiliar product. But they seem to be banking on the idea that it won’t seem outlandish. Maybe it wasn’t that unfamiliar, after all.

We know, of course, what many people think about fruitcake. But I’m here to tell you that I enjoy a good fruitcake very much. (Admittedly, there’s a lot of bad fruitcake out there.) My mother's fruitcake tradition ceased after her teaching career took off in the early 1970s. Alas, I didn’t inherit her talents as a cake baker!
