she exits her grandmother’s home, her smile faltering as her eyes meet deng’s. but the smile remains as the curve of her lips falls back into place, and chiyo tilts her head at him. she’s careful around him now, doesn’t want to antagonize the predator when she is naught but a rabbit in comparison. not the rabbit, but a rabbit all the same.

still, there is a twinge of anger in her chest — her grandmother’s house feels untouchable. felt. she doesn’t like that deng is here, having waited for her to come out. she doesn’t like that her grandmother could see him, meet him. she doesn’t like it at all.

“ how did you know i’d be here? ” she asks as if greeting an old friend. chiyo doesn't expect a straight answer, already making her own assumptions. “ this is pretty far from home. ” her home. far enough that this was a weekend trip, a little vacation from the hustle and bustle of the city. her skin crawls, but chiyo's smile grows into a teasing grin as she moves toward deng and away from her grandmother's front door.

This man, Goro, is definitely not in love in her. (Is he at all capable of love? Could he be in love with her?) But she isn’t going to ask. Neither about his feelings nor for the kiss.

A gentle shrug of shoulders. Another gentle sign of rebellion? Disobedience?

 “Why should I ask him?” – she inquires  -- “Why should I ask Ji-Hun? I already know the answer.” – it would have much more sense to ask the third one, if she truly wanted a kiss – “I nothing more than a duty…than an annoying obligation for him.” – he was more than clear about it; but she’s going to make sure he’ll have plenty of work with her. She is stubborn. At least Ji-Hun was right about that. But she'll make him seeing something else in her. But she knows she won't. Things don't work this way.

meta: the curses origin. Not the Washingtons, but more, how far back does it go for you?

i see the curse in two ways: a) a curse of greed in the washington family, which we could argue starts with robert, though could argue might be further back in their bloodline, and b) the curse of the mountain (the hunger).

i think when bob bought that mountain, the latter attached to the family and mingled with the former, creating a sort of ... black mark on them.

on a tangent: anyone that has something i call "the sight" on my other blog (currently holidayhost but generally known as hehosts), they could likely see this mark. i guess technically if we wanted to really cross canons here, my other oc akira (on grievedifferent) might be able to see that sort of mark, as he has something called "the cat's eye", which is a lot like the sight, but also has its own benefits (perfect balance, the ability to see the other side or things that should be hidden, and a few other key things, but that's its own thing lmao). this black mark is also similar to receiving "your first touch" from that man from hehosts, which some of you know here. if you don't know him, that's totally fine, this is just sort of for me to connect stuff lmao

i've talked a bit on how it could have various origins or triggers, but i think the curse of the mountain is very old, we get this idea confirmed in the game that it's not new by any means, and it wasn't new in the 1950s, either. i think the washington's sort of just ... trigger this heavy-hitting wave of something that was stagnant for a while, or "seemed" stagnant. in reality, it was being contained.
