41 Bathroom Renovation Mistakes You Must Avoid
Our expectations of the humble bathroom have become quite inflated. It’s no longer just a place to get clean, we want more, a refuge where we can close the door on the daily humdrum to luxuriate and recharge, or perhaps just to have some peace and quiet at a place where no one disturbs you, or just simply play with our phones to tune out from the world for a bit.
There’s a lot more to designing a bathroom than choosing taps and tiles (as fun as that part is). Get it right, you will have a beautiful, functional space that you will enjoy spending time in every day. Get it wrong, and you could end up with a bathroom plagued by impractical niggles or, worse, that needs to be completely refitted (not to mention the sleep you lose along the way).
When renovating, it’s incredibly important to have a plan. It doesn’t matter what your space is, a plan will help you figure out exactly what it is that you need to achieve your ideal space. Without a plan, mistakes can happen. Even with a plan sometimes mistakes can happen! What we don’t want is to spend a truckload of time, money and inconvenience on our dream bathroom only to find out a few months down the track that it’s not living up to its promises.
At Buildmatcher, we deal with homeowners renovating their bathrooms on a daily basis and let me tell you, I’ve seen just about everything that could go wrong, go wrong! So, if you’re also looking to renovate your bathroom this year, then this guide is meant for you.
Today, I’ll offer my perspective on what mistakes to avoid in a bathroom renovation. Make sure to read through until the end because if you make any one of these mistakes, your renovation costs will shoot through the roof.
So here are 41 most common mistakes in renovating bathrooms. Watch out for these common mistakes so that you can sprint to that beautiful washroom you’ve been dreaming of, instead of tripping over the hurdles of inexperience in your renovation nightmare.
1. Being seduced by the showroom
We’ve all been there: falling in love with glorious waterfall showers, statement sinks and enormous soaking tubs after a trip to a glamorous bathroom showroom. In reality, these room sets have been designed around the suite with perfect proportions, so it’ll never feel cramped or ‘too much’. Put that oversized bath in your average family home though and it soon becomes an albatross. Too often it becomes a glorified towel holder, filling it up takes forever and it’s too big to get children into and out of safely. You’re better getting something more suited to the space that you’ll use every day.
2. Forgetting to future-proof
If you’re in your ‘forever home’ then think about setting up the bathroom to be safe and functional as you and your family get older. Non-slip surfaces, grab handles, flat walk-in showers and swapping twisting knobs for lever taps can make the transition a little easier. If you’re not quite ready for that, think about leaving space to add these details in later.
3. Using Fixtures And Features That Date
We have all seen it: the chocolate sanitary ware and the gaudy border tiles. Your choice may be very on-trend when it is installed but within a short time frame (within 2 years) will begin to look dated. By keeping your, fixtures, fittings and finishes very elegant and classical, you will ensure that your bathroom has broad appeal that lasts for a very long time.
4. D.I.Y waterproofing
One of the most common issues in a bathroom is a leaking shower and it is an expensive item to fix. Best to do it right the first time by engaging a Certified-waterproofing tradesman and ensure that you are provided with a waterproofing certificate and warranty. If you sell your home following the bathroom renovation you will be required to produce the waterproofing certificate.
Buildmatcher's Waterproofing tip: once the waterproofing is complete, keep an eye on the follow up trades, particularly the tiler. A small nick in the waterproof membrane with the tillers trowel or a broken tile will compromise its integrity and may result in a leak.
5. Inappropriate Materials
All surfaces in the bathroom should be impervious to moisture otherwise it will swell, rot or discolor with time. This excludes soft wood, non-waterproof mdf, & particleboard, and fabric. Porous stones such as travertine marble and hardwood should be sealed.
6. Knocking down resale value
If you have any inkling that you might move to a new house in the next five years, then you’d do well to keep your bathroom a neutral and bright space that won’t alienate future buyers. Grey and white suites will all stand you in good stead and are easy to personalize with your favorite colors in accessories and furnishings. Consider applying a bathroom wallpaper or add artwork and greenery to make the space yours without jeopardizing a future sale price. When you're ready to sell-up, it's a simple repaint job to get it viewing ready.
7. Leaving out counter space
While too much clutter is unsightly you should account for creating a little bit of counter space around a vanity unit. Whether it’s a place to put a make-up bag while you’re getting ready or somewhere to park your morning coffee, if you don’t add in a little bit of table-height surface you’ll regret it.
8. Trying To Squeeze Too Much In
Avoid overcrowding the bathroom. If you have a separate toilet close by, don’t install one in the bathroom.. Maximize space as much as possible to make the room less cluttered and more comfortable. If the room is too small for a bath and a shower, the shower over the bath is preferable to cramping the room. Wall hung cabinetry and an in-wall toilet cistern will help preserve floor space.
Buildmatcher's Tip: Sometimes simply changing the side the door swings from can improve the use of the space.
9. Forgetting finishing touches
Well-chosen accessories can make or break any design scheme, and the bathroom is no exception. Treat yourself to some top-quality towels – organic cotton towels feel luxurious and are Eco-friendly, too. If you’re short on hidden storage, consider decanting shampoos and shower gels into attractive bottles. Small soaps and bath salts can be stored in glass Kilner jars.
10. Not considering worst-case scenarios
Future maintenance can cost thousands if there are problems that can’t be quickly fixed, such as inaccessible taps or pipework, which means you must rip up flooring or damage walls if problems occur. Use fixings that can easily be unscrewed if necessary or perhaps create a false tile or bath front that’ll give easy access to a plumber.
11. Not thinking about height
The height of a towel rack, the depth of a bath and a slightly too low shower head can mean the difference between an average bathroom and a brilliant one. Think about the tallest and the shortest person in the house, and that could include small children, before deciding where things should go.
12. Not looking up
There could be an opportunity to add character to your bathroom by removing a drywall or false ceiling and expanding upwards into the rafters. An eaves space is fabulous over a bath, as is adding a skylight, which allows you to watch the weather while enjoying a soak. It’ll also add value to your house, too.
13. Not having a back-up bathroom
At some point during your bathroom project, the water will have to be switched off. How long it’s switched off for depends on the scale of the works you’re undertaking, but if it’s anything longer than a day or two you’re going to need somewhere else to shower and go to the loo. Now might be a good time to go on holiday or visit friends. If you stay at home, then a Portaloo might be a good investment, and you may find yourself using the gym (and its showers) a lot more than usual.
14. Not filling the bath
One of the biggest nightmares a homeowner can face is springing a leak in the bathroom. Luckily, there are a few things to do when you’re installing to protect yourself against any future disasters. The bath overflow needs to be checked when its plumbed in and if you half- fill the bath with water before applying your sealant, it will account for the extra weight and flex which should stop cracks appearing.
15. Having mixed styles
Finding a style and sticking with it is incredibly important. The one style ensures consistency throughout your bathroom, avoiding any potential style clashes. It’s also important to consider the style and color scheme used in the rest of your home, as you’ll want to have consistency throughout. When walking between rooms, they should feel like they belong in the same home and not like a collection of interior trends from different decades.
16. Moving plumbing fixtures
Moving plumbing fixtures is by far the most common and the costliest mistake in bathroom renovations. If you choose to move your bathroom fixtures around, you’ll need to invest in new plumbing. This can easily take your renovation cost up by a few thousand dollars. Serviceseeking.com.au estimates bathroom plumbing costs to be $5,000 on average! Before you think of moving your plumbing fixtures around, consider if you really need to do it.
Buildmatcher's Tip: Quite often, you can remodel your bathroom around your existing fixtures. The money that you save by doing so can also be spent on accessorizing your space or on higher grade products.
17. Using stone tiles in moist areas
Another common renovation mistake that people make is using stone tiles in the wet areas of their bathroom. While stone tiles look incredibly elegant, they are naturally porous. Over time, water will seep into these pores and damage the tiles. You’ll unnecessarily need to re-tile your floors if you opt for stone tiles in the first place. Be sure that it will be an expensive affair because natural stone tiles are expensive to start off with.
If you’re set on using stone tiles, consider switching to stone-look tiles for the wet areas of your bathroom instead. Our stone-look tiles replicate the look of natural stone perfectly and are available in a range of styles, colors, and designs. Alternatively, porcelain tiles are the most popular choice. You’ll find a range of such tiles at our store.
18. Considering beauty over functionality
One of the most common mistakes I see is from bathroom renovators who put design aesthetics before functionality. Sure, if you’re spending around $20,000 on a bathroom renovation, you want it to look great. But not if that means it is at the expense of the functionality of the bathroom. If any fixture or accessory in your bathroom is not functional, you’ll soon feel the need to replace it. This will unnecessarily cost you in the future.
Here, with Buildmatcher we offer a complete range of bathroom products which perfectly blend style and functional. Our products are specially designed to be in line with the latest trends, while also offering all the functionality you need. When you choose our products, you’ll get the best of good looks as well as features and functionality.
19. Making Your Bathroom Tricky To Clean
A drain serves two purposes, not only the obvious to drain the water but, to act to trap unwanted matter such as hair to ensure the bathrooms drainage pipes are kept clear. As peculiar as it is, a great deal of people position their drain in the center of the base of their shower. When you think about this, it’s not ideal as you’ll actually be standing over the drain when showering and in turn block it. Therefore, ideally consider your drain to not be positioned directly under the spray of your shower head.
20. Lazy layouts
The layout of your space is incredibly important. If you don’t plan this aspect correctly, chances are you’ll find yourself unable to get out of the shower without walking into something, not being able to comfortably sit on the toilet and unable to reach the sink to wash your hands. To avoid this error, plan, plan, plan! It is possible to plan your space yourself however if you don’t feel 100% confident, hire an expert.
You can also visit your local trade store and speak with people there, or even a trip to IKEA can be great to help you plan your space. When it comes to a practical space like a bathroom, function has to come before form. Make sure you allow enough space between sanitary ware so people can move around and sit or stand comfortably – for example, there should be at least 60cm between the toilet and anything that’s in front of it. Towel rails should be fitted within easy grabbing distance of the bath or shower and cupboard and shower doors need to open without obstruction.
21. Poor pipe planning
But before planning your layout, there’s a more important underlying issue to address first: where are your pipes going to go? Start with the soil stack, the wide pipe that carries off waste water from your sanitary ware. Your loo needs to be a maximum of 6m from the soil pipe to allow for proper drainage.
Showers, baths and basins should be a maximum of 4m away. Consider how smaller pipes will reach the soil pipe, as this may be affected by the layout and condition of your underfloor joists.
22. Switching things around unnecessarily
If you’re renovating an existing bathroom and the layout already makes sense, think carefully before switching sanitary ware around. Moving pipes can quickly become expensive and can raise more problems than it solves. If you do want to switch things up, make sure you consult a plumber first to make sure your plan is feasible.
23. Thinking too big for a small space
Your ideal bathroom may include a roll-top bath, walk-in shower, twin basins and oodles of storage but you have to work with what you’ve got or risk ending up with a cramped, impractical space. Pick just one of your dream items – the roll-top bath, for example – and keep everything else compact. If your bathroom is really tiny, add lux touches in your finishes instead.
24. Not including enough storage
Towels, shampoo bottles, toothbrushes, spare toilet rolls – you’ll need to find room for all these things and more in your bathroom. If possible, include a mixture of open shelving for attractive toiletries and accessories, and hidden storage for more day-to-day bits and pieces. A mirrored cabinet with integrated electric toothbrush and razor charger is a neat storage option, while built-in shelving, cupboards and drawers will help you make the most of every inch of space.
25. Poor ventilation
The bathroom is the most humid room in the house, making it the ideal breeding ground for mold if you’re not careful. Invest in a good extractor fan that stays on on a timer after you’ve left the room. This is especially important if you have an internal bathroom with no windows.
The definition of horror is finding tiny black specks of mold marching up your newly painted walls and ceilings. This is generally caused by poor ventilation. Even if you have good open able windows, you will still need an exhaust fan or IXL-tastic to extract the steam. Tip Paint the walls with oil based or mold-resistant bathroom to lessen the risk of mold taking hold.
26. Poor drainage
Every wet area floor requires “fall”. The floor must gently slope towards the floor waste to allow water to drain away efficiently. Large format floor tiles make this difficult, particularly in a small bathroom.
The tiler sets the level of fall by laying a sand and cement screed (topping) that grades toward the waste. The tiles are then laid over top. If the area is small and the tiles are large, they will be difficult to manipulate over the slope and require a lot of cuts. The maximum workable floor tile size is 300 X 300mm. If you have your heart set on large format tiles then consider a linear floor waste.
A quick tip on linear floor wastes; If your design requires a linear floor waste that spans the room (2 meters) +)consider installing two at half the size. This will make cleaning much easier and will reduce the cost significantly.
27. Choosing incompatible fittings
Dream of starting the day being pummeled by a rainfall shower and massage jets? So do we, but before you go splashing out, make sure your water system is up to the job. Speak to a plumber or bathroom specialist to work out whether your current system can handle something like a power shower and be prepared to upgrade your boiler, water tank or pump if need be.
28. Wasting water
Water is precious. Waste it and you’re not only pouring money down the drain, but you’re not doing the planet any favors either. Luckily there are plenty of tricks that can help you save water without having to ditch your daily soak in the tub or power shower. Start by fixing any leaky taps. Look out for shower-heads with the water-saving label, install a low-flush toilet, or pop a brick in the cistern if you have an older model – just check with your plumber before you try this!
29. Using the wrong finishes in the wrong places
While it’s OK to use ordinary wallpaper in some areas of a bathroom, you’ll need to make sure you have a top-of-the-range extractor fan to prevent it from peeling over time. If you’re using wallpaper in an area that’s directly exposed to splashing or steam, place it behind glass, or choose a waterproof wallpaper, some of which can also be used in wet rooms. As for paint, go for a bathroom-friendly option that resists damp and mold.
30. Careless lighting
Bad bathroom lighting is at best impractical and at worst dangerous. Make sure you layer up a mix of general lighting, task lighting (for make-up etc.) and mood lighting for unwinding in the tub. If you want to include statement fittings such as a chandelier or sconces, it’s essential that you choose an option with an ingress protected (IP) rating, which is safe to use in wet areas.
31. Poor Task Lighting
Many bathroom activities require good lighting. Shaving, waxing applying makeup and hair styling are difficult to do well in general ambient light. Including some well-designed task lighting is a must. In short, install a large mirror over the basin or vanity along with some lighting that directs back onto the face. There are many sleek lighting options available rather than the dated Hollywood style makeup lights.
32. Removing The Bath
Taking the bath out of a home will affect the resale. It doesn’t matter which bathroom it is located in, just as long as there is one. But if there is already a bath in the home, a second will not add value.
33. Not having a tiling plan
It doesn’t matter how good your tiler is – leave them to tile your bathroom without giving them any guidance and you risk getting results you’re not happy with. Small details, such as making sure the tiles in a niche follow on seamlessly with wall tiles, will give your bathroom that coveted designer edge. Make sure you alert your tiler to any details like this, ideally by drawing up a plan of exactly how you would like your tiles to be laid.
34. Putting wall tiles on the floor
This may sound obvious, but when you fall in love with a particular tile design it can be easy to overlook how suited it is for the task at hand. Always check whether a tile is hardy enough before using it on your bathroom floor, or you may find yourself living with unsightly chips before too long. Similarly, some floor tiles are just too heavy to use on partition walls. Many designs are suitable for both walls and floors but if in doubt, ask your tile supplier before you buy.
35. Overlooking the importance of good grouting
Plain tiles can be given an instant overhaul simply by choosing the right grout. A darker grout can create an eye-catching pattern in its own right, while a brightly-colored grout will make an even bigger style statement. If you want your grouting to last and not leak, go for epoxy grout rather than cement grout, as it’s highly durable, waterproof and practically stain-proof. It's also a stylish way to add character to a white bathroom.
36. Doing it all yourself Is a Big Mistake
Unless you’re a seriously experienced DIYer, there are certain bathroom renovation jobs that are best left to the professionals. Getting your plumbing right is essential and can be easier said than done thanks to rules about pipe widths, angles and drainage gradients. Hiring a plumber could save you time, stress and money in the long run. Similarly, proper waterproofing is a huge issue for bathrooms, and it will need to be inspected and signed off my a licensed certifier. For any electrics, play it safe and hire an electrician.
37. Not asking the experts
Even if your D.I.Y skills are second to none, it’s still a good idea to consult expert advice before you start your project. Many high street and high-end bathroom stores have design teams who can help you iron out any flaws in your bathroom plan. In some instances, seeking advice is non-negotiable. If you want to knock down walls, move or add windows or install new joists, you’ll need to check with your local building control office about whether you need Building Regulation approval.
38. Not protecting the rest of the house
Every building project generates dust. Hauling heavy equipment and products to and from the bathroom can also scuff up your floors. Minimize the damage by protecting floors of hallways and any other rooms used to access the bathroom with a temporary floor covering, such as Correx®. If your bathroom is an ensuite, cover bedroom furniture with dust sheets.
39. Blowing the budget
Bathrooms are notorious for harboring hidden costs. Rusted pipes, rotting joists, dodgy electrics and endemic mold are just some of the nasty surprises you might uncover once you start lifting up tiles and floorboards. This is very easy to happen in a wet area. What starts out as a minor makeover can very quickly morph into money pit material. To avoid over capitalizing keep the total cost of the renovation below 1.5% of the value of the property.
Here are some Buildmatcher's tips For minimizing costs :
• Design for standard fixtures and fittings to avoid the expense of custom making.
• Purchase all your tiles; tap ware, sanitary ware, cabinets and accessories before you start. Watch sales and auctions for good buys.
• Take photos of the existing fixtures and fittings in situ so that you can advertise on eBay or Gumtree to sell or give away and at the very least reduce the rubbish removal fees.
• If you are able to maintain the configuration of the bathroom, you can usually save on plumbing and the time and expense of council approval process.
• If at all possible, allow a 15 to 20% contingency fund so you’re prepared for the unexpected.
40. Going too big... or too small with tiles
Use oversized tiles in a small bathroom and chances are you’ll end up having to cut the edge pieces down to size, which can look messy and awkward. But go too small, and your bathroom may feel too busy. Medium-sized floor tiles around 45x45cm are often the safest bet in a small space. You can go a bit smaller on the walls, as long as you limit the pattern and color palette.
41. Hire licensed tradespeople – don’t just D.I.Y it!
You might be tempted to save money by DIYing certain parts of your bathroom, however, unless you’re a trades person, there are certain aspects that you definitely shouldn’t D.I.Y! One of these is your plumbing.(I know I am repeating myself, because it is just that important.) Hiring a licensed professional might be a little more costly in the short-term, but it ensures that your job is done right the first time and will save you money in the long-term by avoiding costly fixes or a water damage disaster. Of course, professionals can still make errors, so be sure they provide quality guarantee or warranty, ask your friends and family for suggestions and speak with the tradespeople before hiring to be comfortable that they understand what you’re trying to achieve.

Maybe Baby (I’ll See You on New Year’s Day) (Ch 1/8)
Author’s Note: For @onceuponanadvent. Recently-divorced and returning home for the holidays, Regina Mills is ready to sink into the comforts of the familiar small town she grew up in. While she's there, she finds herself drawn to an old friend.
Regina Mills doesn’t always enjoy being home for Christmas, but she does enjoy going home.
She enjoys the way the December light bounces off of the snow-coated pines, the way their trunks stand out starkly in the woods that cradle the road as she drives north. She even enjoys the sight of the ocean, choppy and grey and unwelcoming as it is.
It’s familiar. Like an old, worn blanket – not necessarily nice to look at all of the time, but comforting nonetheless.
And this year… This year, she’s aching for familiar.
This year, it’s well after dark as she crosses the town line, “Christmas, Baby Please Come Home” blaring from her car stereo in an attempt to keep her awake and alert on the darkened back roads. The moon filtering down through the thick woods makes the snow-covered ground glow blue, and Regina feels a sort of settled rightness in her middle at the feeling of being home .
Home isn’t a feeling she’s been able to indulge in lately, and imperfect though this home may be, it’s better than the one she’d left to come here.
It’s quiet downtown, the chilly streets mostly buttoned up for the night, shop windows all festooned with bells and pine branches and SEASON’S GREETINGS!, fake snow climbing up from their corners and wrapped boxes arranged behind the darkened glass.
There are a few lights still on – the Rabbit Hole has music pumping out into the street, as usual, and Granny’s is still open for late dinners and boasting vacancies.
For a half-second, she’s tempted to pull off right there on Main Street and book herself a room. It might be more welcoming than her destination, and certainly less complicated – but it would no doubt feed the small town gossip mill and Mother would never let her live it down, so she keeps driving.
Just before Main Street ends, curving into Hatter and then Mifflin, she passes Storybrooke Camp and Sport (now boasting signs for ski rentals and ice fishing augers) and her heart skips a beat, her fingers tightening a little on the wheel.
Her wedding ring feels heavy on her left hand, a weighty lie that glitters for a second in the streetlights and makes her heart twist and sink.
She tears her gaze from what maybe should have been but never was, forces her mind from what was and maybe never should have been, and takes the turn carefully, mindful of the ice that slips ever so slightly under one of her tires.
It’s nearly midnight when she pulls into the drive of 108 Mifflin, but the lights are still on in the looming white mansion, an ornate wreath decorating the front door as usual. That and the potted mini-pines lining the walk are the closest thing Mother has come to decorating for the holidays – no surprise there; she finds fairy lights garish and pedestrian, wouldn’t be caught dead with window clings or light-up reindeer, or glowing plastic Santas.
Regina kills the motor in her Mercedes and shrugs her jacket on haphazardly, stepping out into a bitterly cold night. She liberates her Louis Vuitton travel bag from the passenger seat and shivers as she makes a quick trek between those little pines, one hand holding her coat closed as the other lifts to knock at the front door.
Cora answers in a neat pant-suit, her face still painted, not a hair out of place despite the late hour.
Regina is suddenly painfully aware of the splotch of coffee she’d spilled on her jeans somewhere near Kennebunk, and the distinct possibility that said coffee and the granola bar she’d scarfed down an hour ago had worn away her lipstick.
“Come in, dear, you’re letting in the chill,” Mother beckons, and Regina crosses the threshold, dutifully shutting out the winter night.
The outside of the Mayor’s mansion may be sparingly decorated, but the inside is another story. The grand staircase is wound with boughs of holly and pine all the way up, and there’s a large, glowing tree in the sitting room. The whole place smells vaguely of spice—no doubt from the trio of fat candles burning on the sitting room coffee table—and Regina knows that she can count on an ornate Nativity on the dining room credenza despite Mother’s ambivalence toward religion in general, along with another small tree in Mother’s home office. There will be company towels in the guest bath, company soaps, too, all season-appropriate.
The combined effect is supposed to make the place feel welcoming, but Regina remembers too many Christmases from her younger years spent being told not to muss the holly, not to encourage more needles to fall from the trees, not to play with the baby Jesus and the little drummer boy.
Even now, in her early forties, the display carries a forbidden air. A feeling of look-but-don’t-touch.
It feels like a showroom more than a home, especially now that Daddy is gone.
And yet, she’s glad to be here. Would rather be here than in D.C., in that too-empty loft, not enough furniture yet to fill it. She’d decorated it a few weeks ago – silly, considering she’s spending the holiday here and not there . But she hadn’t been able to bear the empty countertops, the bare corners, the… new-ness of it all.
It shouldn’t feel lonely, not to her. The divorce was her choice, and she tells herself night after night that she asked for this. For a place of her own, for an end to the exercise in boredom and endurance and strained silence that her marriage had become. She’d asked to be free, and she was.
She should be happy.
She’s not happy.
Not even with her fragrant six-foot fir with its silver and gold ornaments, or the bowls of snow-crusted pine cones on the coffee table, the drape of silver bell garland over the mantle, or the sleek, white reindeer figurines perched behind it.
She should have gone with red and gold, she thinks, not silver. The silver just feels cold…
Speaking of cold, Mother tells her frostily, “Midnight is a bit late to arrive, don’t you think, sweetheart?”
“I told you I would be getting in late,” Regina reminds as she slips her coat from her shoulders again and unzips her boots. “I worked this morning, and it’s a nine hour drive.”
She shouldn’t have mentioned the drive. All it accomplishes is making her mother huff, “I still don’t see why you drove up from McLean instead of just flying. You could have chartered a car from Portland, and been here in time for dinner.”
“I suppose I could have, Mother,” Regina sighs, “But I wanted to drive. It gives me time to think.”
“What on earth could you have to think about that takes nine hours?” Cora asks as they finally leave the foyer, and, oh, if only she knew.
Far too much is what Regina has to fill nine hours of thinking.
Still, it had been good – the long drive to herself, just Regina and her music, and then a conference call while she’d been snarled in some traffic around Philly, and a good chunk of a book on tape as she’d made her way past New York. There’d been a quick call with her lawyers to recap the divorce agreement she and Leo had signed, and when all the assets would be divided officially.
You know, business as usual for the beginnings of a Christmas holiday.
But Regina hasn’t yet told her mother about the divorce – the ring weighing heavily on her finger is a testament to that – and she’s not sure if she intends to break it to her at the beginning of this trip or the end. She can’t imagine the news will be well-received.
So she holds onto it a little longer, dismissing, “There’s always something to think about,” as they head (unsurprisingly) for the den.
It’s where Mother keeps her bar, and there will no doubt be a post-drive nightcap before Regina gets a chance to shower and sleep.
“I see Leo’s not with you,” Cora comments, predictably, as she reaches for a decanter of brandy.
Regina lies, and tells her, “He had work to do; he couldn’t get away. But he sends his regards.”
Cora nods slowly, pouring drinks both for herself and for Regina and bringing them over to the sofa Regina has settled dutifully onto. Only then does Mother say to her, “I’m sure he’s getting lots of work done in St. Barts.”
Regina freezes, her hand poised to grab the lowball but not quite grasping it yet.
So much for keeping her divorce a secret.
She feels very much like she had at seventeen, when she got caught necking with Daniel out at Lookout Point, despite Mother’s repeated insistence she wasn’t to waste her time with a boy so terribly common .
Busted. And small. And very much like she’s failed to keep Mother’s favor.
It doesn’t help that Cora is looking down at her expectantly, but also with that hint of triumph behind her eyes. Like she’s beaten Regina at her own game, and Regina supposes that, in a way, she has.
“I don’t know why you felt the need to lie to me, dear,” she says to her, and Regina finally grabs that brandy and takes a deep swallow as Mother sinks into the cushion beside her. “I’m your mother; and you’re hardly the only person I know in your social circle, I was bound to find out.”
It would be true, if their divorce had been at all public. But it hadn’t been, it had been quiet, a low-key, mostly amicable parting of ways. Hell, most of their friends don’t even know yet. They’d agreed not to break the news until after the New Year. Which means Mother must have gotten it from one of the lawyers.
Regina is sure—absolutely sure —it was Gold, that snake.
She should have known this would happen. Mother and Gold have known each other for decades, she just figured that attorney-client privilege might actually save her this once.
“I was planning on breaking the news this week – although preferably not the minute I stepped in the door,” Regina tells her mother, trying not to fiddle with her glass despite the twisting nerves in her belly. “I wanted to tell you and Zelena in person, not over the phone. And as well-connected as you may be, the divorce hasn’t been big news. We’ve kept it between us, for now. I thought it was a secret that would keep until the holiday.”
She sees Mother’s mouth pinch slightly at the mention of her other daughter, but she doesn’t acknowledge the comment with more than a, “Well. What happened, then? You seemed like such a good match.”
They didn’t. They never had been.
Leo had been a mistake, a square peg she’d spent a decade of her life trying to fit into a round hole. He’d been good on paper – successful, driven, a mover and shaker in the D.C. political arena. And he’d afforded her the life Mother had always hoped she’d have. But the socialite life had never been Regina’s dream, and she’d always felt stifled in it.
“I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life attending boring galas, on the arm of a boring man, and then going home and having, quite-frankly, mind-numbingly boring sex—”
“Regina,” Mother chides, as if she’s somehow been scandalized by the idea of her daughter having sex with her husband. Or maybe it’s just the honesty that has her so rattled.
“You asked, Mother,” Regina reminds, taking another small sip of her drink. “I wasn’t happy with Leo; I hadn’t been happy in a long time. I’m not sure I ever was. I think…” She shouldn’t say this, absolutely should not, but she hasn’t had much to eat since well before dinner time, not much more than that granola bar, so the little bit of brandy she’s had is already starting to go to her head. It makes her bold enough to admit, “I married him more for you than me. He made sense, he was a ‘smart choice,’ but he was never really my choice. That life had never been the life I wanted. I thought it could be, but…”
She shakes her head, takes another sip and says, “I couldn’t bear the thought of spending ten more years just… surviving, and not really living . Much less another thirty, or forty. So I left him.”
“You gave up,” Cora says primly, and Regina’s blood boils.
“I did not ‘give up,’” she defends, fingers tightening around her glass. “Unless you’re talking about the years I gave up trying to make a doomed marriage work.”
Cora lets out a little huff and takes a swallow of her own brandy, but thankfully doesn’t argue. Regina can tell from the sour expression on her face just what Mother thinks of Regina’s excuses, though – and that’s what she’d no doubt call them, “excuses”, if she wasn’t showing a blessed amount of restraint.
Thank goodness for Christmas miracles.
Of course, Cora not answering leaves dead air between them, a heavy silence that Regina feels the need to fill.
“He didn’t even fight me on it, Mother,” she informs wearily, a headache starting to brew behind her eyes (she should have gone with water, not liquor). “We both knew it wasn’t right anymore.”
“Well, I suppose you’re happy, then,” Cora says with a tight little smile, and Regina scoffs a laugh.
How her mother manages to pack so much disappointment into so little expression Regina will never know, and, “No, I’m not happy. I’m… sad. Or…”
Regina takes a deep breath. These sorts of talks have never been easy with Mother; the more Regina tries to be honest about how she feels, the more judged she usually ends up feeling.
But she tries anyway, telling her, “I feel like a failure. And a fool. And I feel… old. And lonely. And… adrift.” Cora narrows her eyes as Regina talks, but she’s listening, so Regina keeps going. “I may not have been happy with Leo, but I knew what to expect. My life was boring, but comfortable. And now… I suppose I’m just not used to being alone anymore, or to having nothing on my calendar but my own social engagements. It’s… an adjustment.”
“You chose this,” Cora reminds, as if Regina doesn’t know that. “But I’m sure if you wanted to change your mind—”
“I don’t,” Regina insists, shaking her head. “I don’t want to go back to what I had. I just have to figure out what’s next, that’s all. But right now, all I want is a hot shower, and a warm bed.”
And to not be talking about this with her mother.
“So do you think we could continue this in the morning?” Regina suggests, “Or later this week?”
“I think you should spend this week thinking about whether a divorce is really a good cure for boredom ,” Cora tells her, and Regina's jaw clenches. As if she didn’t spend plenty of time thinking this through before she finally threw in the towel. But then Mother concedes, giving her an out with, “But it’s late, and we have a whole week to discuss your options, so yes, we can continue this in the morning.”
Regina is too relieved to even protest the promise of more meddling.
Instead, she takes her bag and climbs the stairs, settling in to the guest room that was once her childhood bedroom.
She unpacks her toiletries and her pajamas, and then she stares at the rings on her left hand, the thick emerald-cut rock and the diamond band. She’d kept them on to keep up appearances with Mother, but the jig is up now
So Regina slips them off, unzipping her cosmetic bag and dropping them inside, never to be worn again.
It feels good. Right.
A bit heavy, but somehow… hopeful.
When she steps under the spray of the shower, it feels like she’s washing away more than the nine hours she’s spent behind the wheel.

Trip preparation and packing may sound like hard work, but it’s part of the lead-up, the excitement of travelling to far away destinations, and it’s definitely worth the effort when you get there.
Remember, that whatever you pack, you have to lug across the world, so if you are unsure about something, chances are you probably don’t need it, and you may be able to purchase items en-route anyway.
There are certain things, however, that you will need to decide on before you leave. Here are some pointers to help you remember the important things.
Luggage
Wheely bag, backpack, duffle bag? Not the easiest of decisions, but usually made simpler by considering the type of terrain you will be crossing.
The lighter the better when it comes to choosing your luggage. Also, you don’t want it to be oversized as you will have to carry or drag your luggage over cobblestones, up hills or on a dirt path.
Valuables
Don’t travel with anything valuable that you don’t want to lose! Leave precious jewellery or items with a sentimental value in a safe place at home. If you’ve got an older model phone at home not in use, you might want to bring that one instead of your latest model. That way if the worst happens and it gets stolen, it won’t be as valuable.
A Travel pack is a good option for hands-free and wheeled carrying. Photo: Deuter.
Clothing
Pack lightweight travel clothes that are non-creasing, versatile and quick to wash and dry. Layering is the key, and be prepared for all the climates you will be travelling to. A scarf can keep your neck warm but also use as a shawl for going out, or over your bare knees if entering a church.
Footwear
Wear comfortable travel shoes that have been worn in properly. Feet may swell on the plane, and climate is likely to be different which can cause feet to sweat so keep that mind when packing your footwear. Look for versatile shoes that have an excellent sole and support. You’re better off being comfortable, so prioritise that factor over looks.
Blisters can spoil a holiday. Avoid cotton socks, these cause rubbing, and take a long time to dry. Look for travel or hiking socks made from Wool/Merino, Synthetic or a blend of these two fabrics.
Pack clothes that are easy to wash and don’t crease easily. Photo: Sea to Summit
Toiletries
Decant your toiletries into mini bottles to take with you. If you have sensitive skin or allergies, then it’s not ideal to rely on the shampoo and soap provided at hotels, so make sure you bring your own.
Take any required medication, as well as your prescription just in case you need to produce it at customs. You’ll need a travel size hand sanitising gel for when you’re out and about for your day pack.
It’s also a great idea to carry tissues, wet wipes, sunscreen, insect repellant, and band-aids with you in case you need them.
A few extra handy points
Remember – no aerosols on planes and have liquids accessible in 1 x zip lock plastic bag for checking by airport security, each container even if partially filled must be no more than 100ml.
Tie some coloured ribbons around the handles of your suitcase to make it easier to identify. Avoid any loops, they may get caught on something.
Have a luggage label with your destination, next hotel, and contact number/s.

Christmas Gift Guide 2019: Men
I’m going to start with the men’s gift guide, this year, so that it doesn’t come across as an afterthought. Don’t you think that a lot of the time men’s gift guides are just far less exciting and inspirational than the women’s ones? I find them so difficult to put together – but then I find buying things for Mr AMR quite complicated, so I suppose it’s not surprising. What I think he might like is always so far from the truth – in my mind, he wants a swanky new Tom Ford wallet, in reality he is in his element going around the garden with his battery-operated leaf-blower.
True story.
So here are some ideas for men’s Christmas presents. I’ve tried to cover all bases and price points but let it be known that it is hard not to be drawn into featuring the usual suspects. A shaving set. Novelty socks. Some funky-looking vodka. A soap that looks like a turd…
OK, the first thing I want to talk about is something called Masterclass. Have you seen this advertised? It’s so good. It’s basically a series of video masterclasses from leaders in their fields – so you can have, for example, a film-making masterclass with Jodie Foster, makeup lessons with Bobbi Brown, beat-making classes with Timbaland and high-powered, motivational business classes with some of the world’s highest achievers. It’s such an excellent gift idea and a full access pass, which gives you access to all of the lessons from violin-playing to haute cuisine-cooking, is £170. And it’s currently buy one get one free. One for them, one for you. What’s not to like?
I think that this is the perfect gift whether you’re happy in your career and just want to broaden your interests or dying for some inspiration to turn your life around. I’ve already joined and I think it’s absolutely genius – I’ll be reviewing soon, so watch this space!
Masterclass, £170 for 12 months here.
Mr AMR wouldn’t forgive me if I didn’t talk about his battery-powered leaf-blower, so here it is: the Ego Power Plus blower. Mr AMR would also like it to be known that all of the Ego garden tools are very good, including the lawnmower. You have a rechargeable battery pack that fits into all of them and is interchangeable, so you can go from mowing to blowing at the blink of an eye. He bought all of his many, many, many tools from Ego Power Plus here.
Note that the backpack blower makes whoever’s wearing it look like a character from Ghostbusters. Which is a comedy bonus.
Something else from Mr AMR’s list of favourites; the Samsung Frame TV. In all fairness, this would be on my own favourites list because it has completely changed the look of my living room. I think we have the older model now, but they look pretty much the same; it’s a TV with a wooden bezel (frame) that sits absolutely flush with the wall so that it looks like a gallery-hung picture. The screen displays a picture whenever the TV is off and it looks completely realistic. I can’t recommend this TV enough, especially if you – like me – absolutely detest the look of televisions on walls.
Find the Frame at John Lewis here* – from £999.
One last thing from Mr AMR before we move on to gifting pastures new: the Bed of Nails, which has been featured many times in the past. It’s one of his most prized possessions, this mat-with-spikes and he slides it out from its hiding place beneath the bed whenever he has a headache or can’t sleep properly. I have no idea whether it actually cures headaches or helps you to sleep properly but he swears by it for just about every ailment and sense of discomfort. He says that he enjoys the pain of the spikes – “it’s a nice pain”. Worrying.
Find the Bed of Nails online at Cult Beauty here* – it’s an unusual – but hopefully very useful – present.
Oh, OK, one more idea from Mr AMR because he did spend ages lying in the bath writing his list to help me out… Brace yourselves for this one people… Third on his list? The Bose Frames Audio Sunglasses*. Sunglasses that play your audio through the sunglasses. Sounds weird, doesn’t it? It is totally and utterly weird. But Mr AMR has tried them and can vouch that they do indeed play music via the material of the sunglasses and that it somehow magically ends up inside your ears. Who knows how? Who cares? Surely this is the future! Buy these and he can wear them when he’s riding his hoverboard to work…
Bose Frames are £199 at Amazon here*.
Whilst we’re Back to the Future, let’s take a look at the Apple Air Pods Pro, £249 from Apple here*. Currently with free engraving, which perhaps makes it a bit more of a thoughtful, personalised gift – tech always feels quite sterile to me! Anyway, these noise-cancelling, fully-immersive in-ear pods are the absolute bees knees – even if they do make it look as though you’re talking to yourself when you take a call on them…
If Apple’s enthusiastic pricing is a little too – er – steep, then plump for these noise-cancelling headphones from Sony. They’re comfy, effective and are a comparative snip at £79. Find them at Amazon here*.
Now we’re really cooking on gas! Or charcoal… The Everdure BBQ by Heston Blumenthal is compact and perfect for stowing away on camping trips. For some reason I can’t imagine Heston Blumenthal cooking on a BBQ, I only see him lifting heavy pans in the kitchen, but still: the BBQ is really cleverly designed. Find it at Amazon here* – it’s £149.
Continuing along the catering line of thought, I’d like to introduce you to a really excellent coffee machine. I know it is because I bought it for Mr AMR last year and he makes coffee for anyone who passes within a three mile radius of the house, because he seems to have an easily triggered hospitality reflex, so it has been tested to its limits. It’s the De’Longhi Magnifica and it’s robust, reasonably compact and makes great coffee. I’ve been told. Don’t touch the stuff – I prefer wine. Find it at Amazon here* – it’s currently £249.99 in the Black Friday sale.
Random quirky-luxe item: the Burberry Cow Print Leather Wallet, £280 at Liberty here*. I rather like this for myself!
Random quirky-luxe item 2: the Crocodile Letter Opener, £45 at Liberty here*.
I am adamant that Taschen’s Helmut Newton book is one of the best coffee table books (if not the best) that money can buy. It’s sexy, it’s fascinating and it’s absolutely HUGE – they don’t call it the Sumo for nothing! This one is a total showstopper and costs £100 here* but I see that there’s a newer edition that’s a standard book size. You can find the slightly smaller one here* for £55. Helmut Newton is one of my favourite photographers, there’s just always something new to pick up on in the images. He’ll never grow tired of this book…
And for those who would rather do some downstairs loo learning than look at glossy nudes, there’s I Used To Know That: Stuff You Forgot From School, £5.24 at Amazon here*. He’ll be boring you with academic facts for the entire holiday season…
A rocket vodka decanter. Because who doesn’t need a Vodka Decanter? Jonathan Adler, always the King of Fun… Find it here* at Selfridges, £150. So cool. There’s also a gin and a whiskey one, if you fancy a Starfleet moment.
I’ve been dying to include this in my gift guides: I, Robot: How To Be A Footballer 2, by Peter Crouch. Perhaps an unusual choice for someone who has absolutely zero interest in football or footballers, but I read an extract in The Times a while back and it was really quite excellent. I bought it straight away and it’s on my book pile waiting to be started. Yes, I’m going to read a book about football. The world must be ending. Find Peter Crouch’s second bestseller on Amazon here*.
Could this be the world’s hottest chilli sauce? It’s called, simply, Regret. Made on the Wiltshire Chilli Farm, I can’t think of a more worthy grocery item for filling a stocking… Find it on Amazon here*, it’s £14.95.
The Tiger Who Came To Tea: this’ll keep his pens in order. I love these pen pots from Quail – they also do egg cups and vases, all of them slightly kitsch and offbeat. Find the tiger one at Liberty here* – it’s £25.
Beatles Monopoly – the classic Christmas game gets a rock ‘n’ roll update. £45 at Selfridges here*.
Can’t find the perfect trainers for him? Why not take my very risky and potentially quite dangerous route and customise him a pair? This is probably the worst suggestion I’m ever going to make and you’ll have to forgive me in advance – sometimes unlimited choice isn’t the best thing… Haha. Go crazy, go wild, he’ll hate them but he can’t take them back! If only you could have your face printed on them… £85 at Nike here*.
A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood; a classic, chic stocking filler with a gorgeous vintage feel. This’ll keep him occupied over the holidays, when he’s not leaf-blowing or puking over your customised trainer design. £6.47 at Amazon here*.
Finally, the Drop Wireless Charger from Native Union is a sleek, chic phone charger that looks space-age and takes up hardly any room. This is currently £26.99 on Amazon* but is almost fifty quid on one of my much-frequented luxury websites! A slick piece of tech that won’t break the bank…

10 Hostess Gift Ideas Under $25
We hope you like the products we recommend. Just so you are aware, Freshome may collect a share of sales from the links on this page.
Doesn’t it feel like summer was just here? And yet somehow, the holiday season is already kicking into high gear. Don’t ask us how we got here, but it’s time to prep for one of the most fun, busy times of the year. With so much going on during the weeks ahead, stress is inevitable. On top of all the other gifts you have to buy this time of year, it’s easy to forget to bring a little something when you’re invited to a holiday party. But a small token of appreciation can go a long way. We’ve got you covered with 10 hostess gift ideas under $25. Consider it our holiday gift to you.
Give a modern spin on fresh flowers with these vases. Image: CB2
Von geometric vases
Flowers are a thoughtful hostess gift – until you realize you’ve just added another task to your host’s to-do list. Now, on top of taking coats and pouring drinks, they’ve also got to get those bad boys into some fresh water. Be a part of the solution, not a part of the problem: Leave your host with a beautiful gift that will far outlast fresh flowers by presenting them in a Von Geometric Vase ($13 each). Metallic and modern, these vases are a perfect addition to any home’s decor. And, because their mouths are small, you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg on a large bouquet.
No refill needed! If you’re looking for hostess gift ideas that get the party started, this is just the thing. Image: Brookstone
Guzzle buddy wine glass
When you’re rushing from event to event during the holidays, it’s common practice to pick up a bottle of wine en route to present to the event host. And, let’s be honest, with the stress of hosting during the holidays, they will probably need a little liquid therapy. So why not contribute a playful complement to the inevitable bounty of bottles your host will receive? The Guzzle Buddy Wine Glass ($20) is a conversation-starter – and a gift your host just might end up leaning on during this busy time of year.
Give a gift that will keep on giving every time your hostess entertains. Image: Cost Plus World Market
Charcuterie cutting board
If your host is crazy enough to throw a party during the holidays, they probably entertain on a regular basis. It can become tiring to constantly have to come up with new and interesting finger foods to set out at a party. That’s why a charcuterie board or cheese plate is a favorite – just rotate in whichever items caught your eye during your last trip to the grocery store. Give your host a beautiful place to display said food by presenting them with a sheesham wood (also known as Indian Rosewood) charcuterie cutting board ($25). It has an eye-catching shape, and the hole at the top makes it easy to hang out of the way when it’s not in use.
A tea set gives your host something they can use for a quiet moment before tackling cleanup. Image: Le Creuset
Tea set
Have we harped enough on the stress of the holiday season? When searching for hostess gift ideas, you’ll see a lot of alcohol-based suggestions. And while those are probably most welcome, they’re not the healthiest way to deal with the social heat of the holidays. Pair a couple of teaspoons ($6) and this tea bag holder ($9) with some of your favorite tea for a gift that invites your host to practice some healthy self-care after the party. These items come in a wide range of colors so you can get something that truly fits your host.
These cherries are a game-changer – and the perfect gift for any host who loves to whip up craft cocktails. Image: Williams Sonoma
Luxardo maraschino cherries
Treat your host to something delicious and help them simultaneously step up their cocktail game. You might think a jar of cherries is a weird gift, but the difference between these Luxardo Maraschino Cherries ($20) and the maraschinos you’re used to in your Shirley Temple is astronomical. Think Rolls Royce versus a second-hand unicycle – really. For the host who loves to make craft cocktails and is always experimenting with new recipes, this is an ideal gift.
Show up to the party with a touch of magic in hand with this bottle stopper. Image: CB2
Unicorn bottle stopper
Sprinkle a little magic on your host or hostess this holiday season. This iridescent Unicorn Bottle Stopper ($10) is equal parts youthful, elegant and affordable. And, as we mentioned, your host is sure to have plenty of wine bottles in which to use it this holiday season. When the holidays are over and the wine runs out, it could be a fun addition to a bar cart’s decor or a conversation starter atop a crystal decanter.
Jingle all the way to the party with this gift in tow. Image: Pottery Barn
Jingle bell bottle opener
When you’re hunting for hostess gift ideas, it’s natural to seek out ones that spread some seasonal cheer. The problem? A lot of them are ho-ho-hokey. But not this beautiful Jingle Bell Bottle Opener ($13). With an eye-catching brass sheen, this opener is equal parts seasonal decor and useful bar addition. Come on, you’ve been at the party where people couldn’t find an opener and ended up using the countertop. Protect your hosts’ home and help them celebrate the season with this small-but-impactful gift.
This gift keeps hands free from garlic smell and makes cleanup a snap. Image: Sur La Table
Garlic rocker
When you’re cooking and the recipe calls for garlic, a freshly minced clove is a must. It’s also a huge hassle. Sure, a garlic press can take some of the work out of the process, but then you’re inevitably stuck trying to clear the leftover bits from your press before they cement in place. Make your host’s future food prep simpler by presenting them with this Garlic Rocker ($15). With a few presses of the palm, you’ve got a beautifully minced clove without the daunting cleanup. Plus, you protect your host from odorous hands. The rocker captures the minced pieces in its shallow bowl so you can easily dump them into any dish.
Help your hosts protect their holiday table linens with a bottle coaster. Image: Williams Sonoma
Marble wine coaster
Are you sensing a theme? Wine is a key player in a number of the best hostess gift ideas. Help your hosts protect their tables by adding a sleek, stately marble wine coaster ($20) into the mix. It’s a pretty addition to any centerpiece and it gives people a place to put those pesky bottles of red that inevitably drip and leave rings as the night wears on. No one wants to see their nice holiday linens stained. Help them help their guests keep a tidy table by bringing this thoughtful gift with you.
Help your host find some respite during this busy time of year with a little detox gift set. Image: West Elm
Activated charcoal gift set
During the holiday season, finding time to unwind is key. Treat your host to a mini spa setup with this Activated Charcoal Detox Gift Set ($25) from Little Seed. This set comes with an activated charcoal farmstead milk soap bar that’s handmade with goat’s milk from Little Seed’s family farm in Tennesse. It’s paired with a detox scrub – and who couldn’t use a little detox this time of year? Heck, you might just need to grab one for yourself while you’re at it.
What’s your favorite hostess gift to give? Have you ever received one that really blew you away? Share your thoughts in the comments so we can all get some additional hostess gift ideas to make this holiday season a little simpler.

The Ultimate Guide for Holiday Gift Ideas!
Hi! It’s Tuesday and Team Fit Foodie is back together again today after over a week of being apart. I had such a fantastic holiday with my family and then Mark’s, but there’s nothing better than getting back into the routine of life at home. Now that Thanksgiving is over, we’re jumping full force into Christmas like it’s no one’s business. Let’s face it, it will be here before we know it.
I was surprised to see so many online deals this past weekend for Black Friday since deals are notoriously found in-stores on the big BF. I did a big order at Anthro because the entire store was 30% off. I’ve been obsessed with their all-natural wellness and beauty products lately! I also restocked on some undies from Aerie. It was 10 for $35, after all.
We’ve been working hard at Fit Foodie HQ over the past few weeks, putting together the ultimate guide for gift ideas. Can I just say that looking at all of these beautiful gifts makes me want to BUY EVERYTHING? Not for me though, for all my people. I’m the weirdo that loves buying gifts for people. Honestly, I do it at all times of the year. There’s something about it that warms my soul. In this post, we’ve separated out a bunch of different holiday gift guides specific to certain people in your life. We tried to hit all different price points and trends and hope these holiday gift guides make your shopping season a little bit less stressful. Enjoy!
Need help with some gift-giving inspiration? We created The Ultimate Guide for Holiday Gift Ideas for the moms, sisters, coworkers, boyfriends, etc. in your life! #giftguide #holiday #shopping

How To Prepare for Your Summer Holiday – 10 Top Tips
With Summer holidays fast approaching, it’s exciting to imagine yourself by a pool with a refreshing drink in hand. Take some time for a little advance planning, to make your trip even more enjoyable. We’ve rounded up a checklist to help you prepare for your Summer holiday, so that you’ll love your holiday even more.
1 – Plan where to go
Deciding where to go is one of the most fun parts of travel planning. It can be hard to choose somewhere that suits everyone, so villa holidays are a good compromise where people can do their own thing and come together at mealtimes. To help with travel planning, I like to read blog reviews, and Pinterest is a great source of inspiration. Villa Plus, whom we’ve teamed up with to bring you this guide, have some great destination suggestions on their site and 30 years experience of providing handpicked villas across Europe as well as bilingual in-resort staff. I’m particularly drawn to their villas in Corfu, Kefalonia and Menorca – the nearby beaches and tavernas look so tempting! Their villas with gated pools would provide real peace of mind to families with young children.
2 – Get your travel documents in order
Check that your passport is up to date – for some countries such as Kenya your passport should be valid for a minimum of 6 months from the date of entry and you need two blank pages in your passport. UK nationals can check travel requirements for each country at Gov.UK and also apply for a free European Health Card, aka the EHIC on the NHS website. Beware of unofficial sites as some charge illegal application fees for this complimentary card. If necessary, renew your travel insurance. You may need extra cover if you are going to participate in activities such as canyoning, scuba diving or jet skiing, so always check the small-print. Make photocopies of all your paperwork and leave one copy at home, taking the other with you or save an electronic copy to your phone.
3 – Look after your health
Check which vaccines or medication are needed, several months in advance, at the Travel Health Pro website. If you take medication, make sure that you have a sufficient supply for the duration of your stay. However, some countries have a list of controlled medicines such as painkillers, so it’s wise to consult the embassy website of the destination, to keep any medicine in the original packaging and bring a copy of the prescription. Consider packing a small first aid kit, together with mosquito and insect repellent depending on your destination.
4 – Get shopping
Now for the fun part! Stock up on sunscreen and other items that are likely to be pricey or hard to find in your destination. For your hand-luggage, travel-sized toiletries are essential, or invest in travel-sized containers under 100ml and decant your favourite products into them. It’s also worth buying your own clear plastic toiletry bag, no larger than 20cm x 20cm. It’s worth purchasing any items that might be hard to find in your destination, like contact lens solutions and soap free shampoos. Make your holiday feel more luxurious by investing in comfortable noise-cancelling headphones if you have a long flight ahead.
5 – Prepare your tech kit
It’s worth taking a universal adapter, and an e-reader is a good alternative to heavy books and magazines. It’s essential to charge up laptops, tablets and phones before you go as if you carry them in your hand luggage, you may be asked to switch them on when going through security and you’ll need the phone charged for your e-ticket. Check your data roaming package before you travel and consider purchasing an add-on to keep costs to a minimum. For cameras and phones, clear some space for new photos in advance by downloading your existing photos and videos to your computer or an external hard drive. It’s easy to forget and you don’t want the time-consuming task I was faced with on a recent trip, deleting phone videos just so that I could take new photos and send emails!
6 – Pick up currency in advance
It’s generally a lot cheaper than buying in the destination so find the best rates online. Many will deliver currency to you, or you could consider a prepaid card loaded with currency, or a credit card designed for overseas travel. On a side note, let your bank know that you will be away, so that they don’t query your overseas transactions, thinking that fraud is being committed on your account!
7 – Check the weather forecast
Look at websites such as World Weather Information Service or Wunderground, available online and as a phone app. Just be aware that the temperature forecast on any site won’t necessarily give you the whole picture. For example, you might be travelling to a tropical country during monsoon season, so look at sunshine hours to get a full impression.
8 – Get packing
Make a packing list or use an online template for your destination. Light layers are key, as it may get cold in the evening in Mediterranean countries, as well as a hat and sunglasses. Don’t forget to pack walking shoes or sandals if you have an active holiday in mind. Remember that all hand-luggage toiletries must fit into a clear plastic bag, not exceeding 20cm x 20cm. Check your luggage allowance online, and buy a small digital luggage scale to weigh your case at home. That way you can make sure that you’re within your allowance, rather than taking the risk at the airport. If you do need extra luggage, it’s generally much cheaper to book it in advance online than at the airport.
9 – Work out your route to the airport
If parking at the airport, make sure to pre-book your space online. Allow extra journey time, in case of any traffic jams. Have a look at how to get from your arrival airport to your holiday destination and book car hire or airport transfers in advance.
10 – Ensure peace of mind
Set up an out of office reply on your emails, and compile a list of useful numbers in case of any issues, such as your bank and phone provider. Consider a house sitter to look after your home while you are away. Organise pet care. If going away for a long time, redirect your mail or ask a neighbour to pick it up and pay bills that will be due. Finally, turn off any heating, set your alarm system and light timers and lock your doors and windows securely.
We hope you’ve found this checklist useful to prepare for your Summer holiday, and wish you a relaxing trip! Do you have any tips that you would suggest to those preparing for their holidays?
