The Rules Of Royalty. Basically the Princess Diaries (movie) but queer and with very little tension. I wanted to like this a lot. I love the Princess Diaries, I love Queer YA, but I struggled to get through this one, I found the writing to be repetitive, lacking emotion, chemistry or investment.
On one hand this is good because queer authors/readers deserve to do mediocre work too, but on the other hand it was boring.
A resounding meh from me.
The saw in the background is because I've been working on revamping our chicken run, not because I'm doing anything to the book. It's headed to our local bookfair.

Got free time? Happy to have no commitments so you can commit to reading? Tag one of your favourite long reads by someone else and then one of your own stories that you think fits the bill, no matter the length.
Thanks for the tag @a-noble-dragon @ramonaflow ❤️🤍
On Solid Ground by TrueIllusion
This is a wonderful series currently at 166,043 words. Starting with Patrick getting into an accident and the aftermath of that, and then the challenges David goes through when he's diagnosed with MS. It's angsty and hurty and a lot of comfort, and beautifully written.
and for something a bit more uplifting and in time for the New Year
Going Down by concannonfodder [151,504]
The Roses never lose their fortune, and David never moves to Schitt's Creek. He's facing down the prospect of spending New Year's Eve alone, when fate traps him in an elevator with a certain Canadian tourist.

Thank you for the tags @a-noble-dragon and @jamilas-pen 🥰❤️
Bon Hiver by SweetSirius @wordthieve
This is the author's summary:
Patrick, fresh off ending his engagement, is desperate to not be around people this Christmas. It seems like a long shot that the owner of this cottage, in a town neither he nor anyone he knows has ever heard of, is also looking for an eleventh-hour escape over the holidays, but ... there's this pull in his gut that he's curious about.
42,530 absolutely delightful words full of pining and cuteness and all that good stuff 🥰
I always feel a bit weird reccing my own fics so instead I'm recommending two gorgeous fics by two of my favourite people ❤️🥰
in finding myself, i found you by @flowertrigger
This is the author's summary:
In which Patrick takes an impulsive trip to NYC for Pride and meets David—beautiful, sexy, and clad in leather.
And well, need I say more? Hot, sweet, wonderful meet cute 😍
Noble Beloved by AWorldOfDreams @a-noble-dragon
This is the author's summary:
Schitt's Creek has a secret. And it's a rather large one. David's not at all pleased that this secret involves him, becoming a Dragon Liaison Officer. Because Dragons don't exist... right?
This is a must read, even if you don't think you like magical realism. Dragon!Patrick is one of my favourite Patrick's that I've read. Read it and prepare to fall in love.

Thank you for tagging me, @a-noble-dragon and @ramonaflow !
Got free time? Happy to have no commitments so you can commit to reading? Tag one of your favourite long reads by someone else and then one of your own stories that you think fits the bill, no matter the length.
I have no stories of my own, but I adore long fics and love getting lost in all the amazing works we have in our fandom.
Since @a-noble-dragon already recommended my favorite ever long fic, You Can Fall by @wordthieve , I'm going to second their recommendation and add two more of my own.
Incorrect by LisaMc21 - Patrick plays for the Blue Jays, David is an interior designer. They meet on vacation and then have to figure out what comes next. I love long distance relationships, I love pining and I love this fic a ridiculous amount!
And
Blackbird, Fly by @distractivate - David and Patrick meet after the apocalypse when David joins Patrick's reintegration class to begin living in the world. Don't let the post-apocalyptic setting scare you, this story is full of joy and a beautiful relationship. The ending makes me cry every time I read it, it's so gorgeous! The companion piece, Here We Go, Bluebird, about Clint and Marcy, is also wonderful.
Tagging some mutuals in case they have time and want to share some recommendations. @raspberryconverse ,@olinsghost , @cinnamonrollsos , @apothecarose and @statueinthestonetoo .

Thanks for the tag, @chelle-68!
Undertow by @rosedavid - I love this slow burn lifeguard!Patrick AU. The exploration of feelings and the aftermath of trauma is just excellent as is the banter. You should all read it if you haven’t!
so bitter and so sweet - a semi-slow burn coffeeshop au in which David is the barista and encounters a snippy but intriguing customer.

Time until the end of time by ships_to_sail, yourbuttervoicedbeau (kiwiana)
Patrick and David meet in the after life. And it's amazing and beautiful and one of those fics that I read as a WIP and kept checking on a Friday for the update. Such a gripping read, definitely something to get lost in.
And for my fic
Death of Socialite
Detective Patrick Brewer was good at solving puzzles. Facts. Data. These were things he could deal with. He followed the rules and kept everything in order, and it meant he could sleep well at night. He wanted to be one of the good guys.
But something on his latest case just wasn't adding up. He couldn't think clearly. If only he could keep his mind off the arrogant suspect whose dark eyes and lithe body kept invading his thoughts.
Tagging everyone who I love, whose work I love and all my fav mutuals even if you don't write- share a fav read, or just share to get more stories!

Certain Ends - Chapter 1 - frimfram - The Umbrella Academy (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
I remembered I meant to do this just in time! It's technically Christmas Eve in London now, where (and when) this story takes place, and I've been sitting on reccing it since February, when @steeple-sinderby finished it (and I beta'd it). It's a heavily-Christmas-Carol-influenced story (not quite a retelling) (it's fun catching all the references, some of which are much less obvious than others) about a slightly-younger Klaus Hargreeves and the spirits haunting him that Christmas Eve, most of whom are his brother Ben. It's an incredibly EVOCATIVE story, full of description that brings a haunted winter London to life (or afterlife) which really makes it perfect for reading during the proper month, and so I am reccing it now since it was entirely too overlooked in February! Enjoy, it's delightful!

Book Review: "Marmee" by Sarah Miller
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 5 out of 5. This was a great addition to the classic and beloved story of “Little Women”. Told from the point of view of Marmee through her diary entries, see the familiar tale through another’s eyes. It took me a little while to get into the diary form of writing, since I have not read a book like that in a long time. I am the type of person who thrives on dialogue and there was…
