Like, girly please forgive yourself. But also internalize the reality you live every day where vampires are more complex than the question of soul vs no soul. Allow yourself to live in the world you exist in rather than within the imaginary parameters of what others have told you is acceptable.

You’re right, Buffy. You are more than other people. You are alone in a lot of important ways. Especially if you’re still upholding the prejudicial lies fed to you by the council that have been bodily contradicted by every vampire you’ve met so far.

Embrace the gray area, Buffy. For the love of fucking god, embrace the gray area.

PROMPT: For some reason, instead of staking him, Buffy takes Holden Webster with her to talk to Spike (maybe she wants him to confirm the story, maybe she thinks a vampire therapist will help Spike, who knows). He ends up sticking around for season 7, and acting as a therapist to all of the scoobies. Lots of humor comes from having a vampire therapist, but he actually does help them work out some of their issues with each other.

Conversations with Dead People aired for BTVS season 7, episode 7. Buffy runs into an old classmate from high school. Holden is a Dartmouth College Psychology major and he acts as a therapist for Buffy in this episode. Holden Webster was played by Jonathan Woodward and this was Holden's only appearance.

During a discussion of rumors about Buffy during high school, Holden explains: "A lot of kids thought you were dating some really old guy, or that you were just heavy religious. Scott Hope said you were gay."

This is also the only episode in the entire series (BTVS) that does not include an appearance by Xander.

I really like After Life (and, specifically, that scene of Buffy admitting to Spike she wasn't trapped in a hell dimension that I just reblogged). I think I would probably put it somewhere in my top five episodes of Season 6 (along with Dead Things, Bargaining and [somewhat lower down the list] Tabula Rasa and Doublemeat Palace).

And yet, as I've said before, I really don't like the way that some fans take it as canon that Buffy literally was in heaven (and that, in particular, something like the popular Christian notion of heaven exists in the Buffyverse despite everything else the show has ever said or will say about it; or that Buffy would go there by virtue of being a virtuous person despite her very explicitly not being at all religious ["note to self: religion, freaky" in Season 2, or telling Holden Webster in Season 7 that there was "nothing solid" to suggest God exists].

I really like the metaphorical reading of this part of Season 6, in which The Gift ended with Buffy making an (ultimately unsuccessful) suicide attempt, and in which she resents her friends for not letting her die, and in which she considers her life in Sunnydale to be a (metaphorical) hell which she compares unfavourably to some nebulous feeling of being 'complete' and 'finished' which she experienced after The Gift. But I just don't think the show is better if you start adding things like a literal heaven to the world's lore. something that nobody had ever even suggested as existing before this season. (I kind of loathe the whole concept of The Powers That Be on Angel for much the same reason; it just doesn't feel like it belongs in the setting the show had previously established).

The thing is, I think Buffy's speech in After Life works just as well -- arguably, even better -- if you don't assume she's right about actually being in heaven. I mean, we know she's wrong to have thought that "everyone [she] cared about was all right". We've just watched Bargaining, after all. Not only is everyone in Sunnydale in very real physical danger without a Slayer to protect them, all of Buffy's surviving friends and her kid sister and her Watcher are all manifestly miserable without her. Plus they'd still have had to deal with the Trio and (almost certainly) Willow's growing reliance on magic [even without the big resurrection spell, are you seriously suggesting Willow wouldn't keep using magic more and more if she lived on a Hellmouth with no Slayer?]. And all the money problems Buffy will find out about later would still have been an issue without her coming back to life! Were they going to send the Buffybot to work a second job to pay the bills? Were they going to send Dawn? And that's not even mentioning Angel, or asking about the people Buffy loved who have already died [are they in heaven too?]. I actually think it's more accurate to say that nobody Buffy cares about was all right while she was gone.

But After Life works because, to Buffy, none of that is relevant in the moment. She convinced herself that the people she loved would be better off without her when she jumped in The Gift, and now -- freshly emerged from her own grave, having been cheated by her best friends of her one chance to quit being The Slayer, told that she can't just pass on the impossibly hard task of living in the world to her sister -- of course she's going to keep believing it. Of course she's going to try to believe it for as long as she can. Because the alternative is admitting that she herself is still needed, and that she can't give up on the world just yet. And she really, really doesn't want to have to do that. Arguably she won't do it until Grave at the end of the season.

The important part of After Life isn't that Buffy thinks she was in heaven; it's that she's convinced the world around her is hell.

That's a very interesting way of looking at it. Like, when they get turned, their human soul is taken away, and is replaced by a demon soul. Which as far as I've ever been able to tell, means that their moral compass gets stripped away and they're given vampiric urges--violence and a need for blood. But the person they are without that moral compass and with vampiric urges remains. Which explains why they're still capable of love. The moral compass being gone doesn't stop them from loving. After all, Spike turned his mother into a vampire. The love he had for her was pure, and couldn't be quelled by the demon inside.

Which is why it's kind of heartbreaking to think about Spike's mother's reaction to being turned into a vampire. All the cruelty inside her and resentment she'd had towards her son that had been suppressed by her moral compass was released. Spike hadn't had any mixed feelings about his mother, so there was nothing negative that came out of him.

(And it's also rather revolting that she came onto him because jfc what if she'd actually wanted that as a human?)

Anyway, the idea that all that happens when a human gets turned is that their moral compass gets stripped away and they're given vampiric urges explains Spike's ability to have empathy. Hell, even that vampire that Buffy fought in s7(Holden Webster) still seemed capable of empathy. He and Buffy basically had a therapy session, and he seemed to genuinely care about what she was going through. He was still willing to fight and try to kill her, but he truly seemed to care. Perhaps more vampires could become "good" if they grew to love humans. They don't seem capable of caring about what's "right" or "wrong", at least not in the society Buffy is in, but they ARE capable of love and empathy. Which means they're capable of behaving in ways we would consider positive. After all, Spike was willing to care for Dawn and fight monsters with the Scoobies after Buffy died because of his love for her.

And what you said about Angel is very interesting. I've always wondered why he turned into Angelus when he hadn't lost his soul, simply because he thought he had. You're right, it was all in his head. He became convinced that since his soul was gone, he was only able to listen to the vampiric side of himself. The part that didn't care about humans and simply wanted to kill them.

That quote always brings me to tears. Because it's so true. It's an acknowledgement that Soulless Spike was more than just the demon that possessed him when he died. William remained. Suppressed and controlled by the vampire soul inside of him, but still there. And when that trace of who he had been as a human fell in love with Buffy, it grew stronger and stronger and stronger. And being surrounded by good people increased it even more. Especially the love he grew to have for Dawn as well, because I absolutely believe that he loved her too, and the fact that it was a paternal love rather than a romantic love was, I think, helpful on an even deeper level. Spike was surrounded by love, and that bit of William that remained was bolstered so much by that love that it grew stronger than his vampire soul. He faced the monster inside of him, and he fought back. And he fucking won.
