Thoughts On: After School Dice Club (Dub)

Overall Assessment

Let’s not speak of this again || Awful || Bad || Okay || Entertaining || Good || Better than Expected || Really Good || Amazeballs || What is this vision of glory I’ve witnessed?!

I’d originally skipped this during the 2019 season, saving it on my later column for when it was dubbed.  I’ve watched enough anime to get a sense of which ones are going to be entertaining enough to sit through subtitled and which ones I’d rather wait and watch when I can multitask, and without much time on my hands normally, I have to make those decisions.  After School Dice Club got the postponement, but I’m so glad I watched it.

In preface, I have to say that I love board games.  I’m not as intense of a fanatic as Midori, but I certainly do love any kind of tabletop game or card game, so seeing an anime surrounding board games just made me really happy.

After School Dice Club is a pretty typical slice of life, it doesn’t really break much new ground in characterization or in narrative, and on the whole it’s incredibly simplistic.  However, it’s simply adorable.

Being an anime, I was initially thinking that the series was going to be about fake board games hyped-up in an incredibly dramatic fashion.  It’s anime right?  Competition anime always is filled with drama.  Thankfully, the series really was nothing more than friends playing board games together.  The best part is that they’re playing actual games that anyone could purchase online or at a games store.

Yes, this does make the series a little dull, like watching a playtest for a board game on youtube, but as someone who likes board games, that was just fine for me. 

I also found all of our characters incredibly lovable, and the emotional journey that our main character Miki goes through is actually very heartwarming.

On the whole, it’s not the best anime, and it really wouldn’t be very interesting unless you’re a habitual watcher of slice-of-life or have a love of board games, but I do recommend it if you want something positive, wholesome, and heartwarming.

Earlier today, the official Hōkago Saikoro Club anime website updated with two new cast members. The series will add the following:

Kenichi Imaizumi (Reborn!, Komori-san Can’t Decline!) will direct the title at Liden Films, with Yukiko Ibe (Magical Girl Ore,  Jewelpet Twinkle) providing character designs. Atsushi Maekawa (Fresh Pretty Cure, Hunter x Hunter) is in charge of series composition.

Hirō Nakamichi’s Hōkago Saikoro Club manga launched in the pages of Monthly Shonen Sunday in March 2013. The series currently spans fourteen collected volumes, with volume 15 due to ship to stores on October 11.

The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten: anime in arrivo per la popolare commedia romantica di Saekisan

L’adattamento sarà a cura dello studio Project No.9, annunciato anche il lancio del manga.

In occasione del GA Bunko & GA Novel 2022 New Year Anime Festival, è stato annunciato che “Otonari no Tenshi-sama ni Itsunomanika Dame Ningen ni Sareteita Ken” (The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten), la commedia sentimentale firmata da Saekisan, ispirerà una serie animata.  

L’adattamento è diretto da Kenichi Imaizumi (Hokago Saikoro Club, Kingdom - Stagione 3) presso lo studio PROJECT No.9 (Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?!, Higehiro: After Being Rejected, I Shaved and Took in a High School Runaway).

Della sceneggiatura si sta occupando Keiichiro Ochi (Adachi and Shimamura, The Quintessential Quintuplets), il character design è a cura di Takayuki Noguchi (HigeHiro, Shokomeza - Le ragazze anelano alla landa selvaggia) e le musiche sono composte da Moe Hyuga (O Maidens in Your Savage Season, OshiBudo - Se la mia idol preferita arrivasse al Budokan, morirei).

Lanciata nel 2018, dapprima online sul sito Shosetsuka ni Naro, la light novel viene pubblicata corredata delle illustrazioni da parte di Hanekoto, a partire dall’estate del 2019. Ad ora, ne sono usciti in Giappone cinque volumi, con sesto, numerato 5.5, atteso per il 14 gennaio.

L’opera si è piazzata al 6° posto nella classifica Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! 2022. Dal 6 gennaio ne verrà lanciata una versione manga, che verrà serializzata su Manga Up!.
