After School Dice Club!

We have been binge-watching the first season of “After School Dice Club” which is based on the manga series - Hōkago Saikoro Kurabu - by Hirō Nakamichi. (oh how I wish there was an English translated version of this manga!)

This is a corny but absolutely delightful show about friendships and board gaming. REAL BOARD GAMES. A timid and introverted teenage girl makes new friends and learns to enjoy life through playing modern board games. These girls are obsessed with board games! But that’s not all.

Things we love about this show:

- The gamers are all girls!  - Two of these girls are fledgling board game designers! (This is very cool when the board gaming industry is very male-dominated) - The design advice and philosophy in the episodes about making games is actually well thought out and useful. - The manga/anime is clearly written by someone who is passionate and knowledgeable about board games. The nerdiness and love come through. - The girls teach you a new board game in each episode, and they present the rules and discuss strategy in such a clever and entertaining way that simple family games come across as really immersive and fun! - Romantic tension is hilariously amplified through ‘analysis paralysis’. - Emotional conflicts and relationship issues are resolved through gameplay and corny and sweet ‘‘board game wisdom”. Eg, “you get to play more tiles if you let the enemy player into your territory”.

FUNimation Entertainment has announced that it will simulcast the After School Dice Club (Hōkago Saikoro Club) anime. The company will begin streaming the anime in Japanese with English subtitles on October 2, 2019, and with an English dub on October 16, 2019.
