Mat would be lying if he said he didn’t sneak glances at the announcers box after meeting you. You had been carrying a plate of food and two margaritas to your booth where your friends sat. Tito had made a joke about you seeming familiar then the pair heard your voice and knew, “Alright now, eat up because y’all are bumming me out.” Mat’s jaw slacked, “He’d known that the Islanders had gotten a new game announcer who was a girl but he wouldn’t have known it was you. You were effortlessly stunning, you had captivated the attention of every straight man in the bar. Mat had approached you as you sat at the bar, “I’m Mat, can I buy you a drink?”

You grinned and spoke, southern accent slipping out, “I’m Y/N, I mean Barzy after the way you played last game? You better buy me a drink. ‘Yknow how many hate comments my broadcast got?” Mat grinned as the bartender approached you, “Another Corona Light and whatever she’s having on me.” You grinned sheepishly, “I’m fucking with you. I’ve heard worse.” Mat grinned, “So now would probably be a shitty time to ask you out?” You smiled at him, “Maybe not.” Mat smiled, “If I may, your not from New York are you? Where are you from?” You grinned, “I grew up in Toronto with my 3 younger brothers and moved to Alabama for college and been in New York for a few months now.” Mat grinned, “Well welcome to New York beautiful.” That was a year and a half ago. You still hadn’t told your brothers who your boyfriend was, just that his name was Mathew. Until your album release came creeping in and you wanted to go public with Mat.

It’s pep rally time and the hockey team as to wear the team jackets but the readers is a bit to small so everytime they raise their arms the hoodie lifts and shows their stomach but that wasn’t a problem as long as the reader wore a shirt under it, but the reader was in a rush this morning and decided not to wear a shirt so bout time it’s pep rally time reader is nervous but as long as they don't lift their arms their fine right? Wrong the team has to lift their arms in celebration for their next big game so the school gets flashed with the readers abs and happy trail, and the plastics absolutely goobsmacked and their definitely pulling the reader off for a make out sesh

This morning had you pretty rushed. You'd woken up a little later than you'd wanted to, just grabbing clothes without thinking. You were on NorthShore's co-ed hockey team. And there was a pep rally today where your team was expected to hang out in the gym. Watch the cheerleaders and listen to people cheer you on before the big game tomorrow. Your team was to wear their team hoodies, that were each customized to your last name and jersey number on the back. It was probably your favourite hoodie that you owned, though it was a little small on you.

Until you could get one that fit properly, your coach suggested that you just wear a shirt underneath. Which was fine by you. Only... in your rush you'd forgotten that undershirt. Just throwing on the hoodie and some black shorts before running out the door. Praying you caught the bus.

Come time of the pep rally, a lot of people were gathered in the gym. Just cheering and vibing to the music from the cheerleaders' dance routine. Your team stood off to the side, close to the wall as the cheerleaders had the floor. The guys on the team were grinning like idiots, nudging and whispering to each other. You rolled your eyes as you overheard them. A sigh leaving your lips.

After the cheerleaders, your coach gave your team a speech. Saying how he was proud of you guys for getting this far and that no matter what happens tomorrow, it won't change how awesome he thinks his team is. You guys all cheered at that, throwing your fists into the air and being all around rowdy. When you threw your fists in the air.. you didn't notice how your hoodie rode up a little. Revealing your abs and happy trail to the stands. Honestly a lot of people didn't notice. But your girlfriends? Whose eyes hadn't left you since this whole thing started... absolutely did notice. Karen was practically drooling.

When the rally was over, they marched right up to you and dragged you to the lockers after everyone else had left them. Regina's grip was tight on your hoodie as she pulled you along. Leaving you confused, unsure of what promoted their sudden desire.

In the locker room, Regina pushed you up against the door and smirked. Eyes trailing your body. "Hoodie off. Now." She left no room for arguments, not that you would have anyways. Your hoodie came off pretty quickly. Falling to the floor at your feet. All three of them couldn't help but just stare, Regina was the first to break out of the trance. Pulling you into a bruising kiss as her teeth grazed your bottom lip. You moaned at the feeling, reaching out to her hips and making her feel flush against you. Gretchen came up to your other side, trailing kisses along your neck as her hand rested against your abs. Brushing the skin there with a smile on her lips that you could feel against your skin. Sending a shiver down your spine. Karen took the longest to regain focus, blinking several times before coming up to your other side. Doing similarly as Gretchen. Lips moving against your neck and down to your chest. Soft whimpers left your lips as Regina parted the kiss. Hand coming up to grip your chin, making you look into her eyes again.

"You're so fucking hot..." She muttered, kissing you again as her hand slipped into your shorts. Your girlfriends clearly weren't in a rush to leave the locker room anytime soon. But, neither were you. You loved when all three had their attention on you.

"is that all?" y/n came up behind john, wrapping her arms around his torso and resting her head between his shoulder blades.

he nodded, speaking a quiet 'yeah' as he rested one hand on both of hers. they stayed silent for a bit longer, y/n occasionally tightening her grip before relaxing it again.

he didn't want to glance over at the clock on the oven, too nervous that it would be close to the time she would have to leave. this would be the first time they would have to do long-distance. sure they had the smaller moments, when john was away for a roadie, but it wouldn't compare to this.

he could hear her sigh before she mumbled words, "i got to get going, johnny."

it was now his turn to sigh, turning around in her arms and wrapping his around her. she blinked away the tears, determined not to let them fall or at least for him to see them, "i love you."

"i love you too, sweetheart."

she pulled away to look up at him, his hands moving down to her hips. they took a moment just to look at each other, both of them realizing this would be the last time they could see each other until john came to new york or jersey, or until she got permission to take a leave from work.

when he noticed the tears start to fall, he winked at her, eliciting giggles from the girl. john cupped her face with his right hand as they rested their foreheads against each other, "god i'm going to miss you so much."

her voice was heavy with tears, knowing that if john said or did something she would break out into sobs. however, the moment never came as he whispered his next words, "stay then."

her eyes widened, "what? john, you know i can't."

he shook his head, "no you can, we can find you a job, i'll help you. and if you don't find one right away i'll be here to support you, you know that. i don't want us to do long distance, y/n/n. i can't do it."

he wiped a stray tear from her cheek with his thumb, "please."

he could see the wheels turning in her head, thinking over it. her left hand came up to wrap around his wrist, rubbing her thumb over the bottom of his palm.

"okay."

"okay?"

she nodded, "okay. i'll stay."

he pulled her into a tight hug, kissing the top of her head, "i love you so so much."

"i love you too johnny, couldn't leave you here alone could i?"

"i guess not."

"well, i'm sure we'll find something to do in utah."

"i'm sure." he murmured, kissing her head again, "but all that matters is that we'll do it together."

a few more moments of silence passed before he giggled. she looked up at him confusedly, "what?"

"you're staying in utah with me. i knew i was too irresistible for you to just fly back to jersey leaving me here."

"you're such a dork."

"but i'm your dork."

"that you are, john marino. that you are."

AFTER THE THUNDER COMES THE-

Some process pics! Thought I had taken way more, but no!!

This is the base colors for the arena all laid out, with the lines turned off (for the lines i very much did find a good, clear photo of Amalie Arena, stretched the angles to where i wanted them, and traced that shit)

Shadows and color sections (I'm realizing the jump from the first pic to this one is very "draw the owl.") Nothing except the ground is textured yet, but every area is fully distinct now.

Finished background!! Details and textures have been added, logos are on, I'm so fucking proud of it!

After this and after the figure was colorblocked in, I went back and made a ton of color adjustments to the bg to make to all cohere. Tbh, I didn't really enjoy that part and it took a lot of trial and error. I think the next time I do a large architecture piece I'll try to have the colors more in line with the color scheme from the start, rather than basing the initial colors off of my reference pic. Hope you enjoy!

you know what, as much as it might make me angry, as much as i get overly passionate (sometimes on the internet), i am so grateful that i got into hockey when i did. it gave me a sense of direction, and it’s opened me up to endless possibilities as far as careers and paths i could take.

not to mention, this is, genuinely, in my opinion, the best era of hockey. there are guys like sidney crosby, who might be in the twilight of his career but is still clawing at glory every chance he gets. guys like connor mcdavid, who change the game fundamentally with the drop of a hat. guys like nathan mackinnon, auston matthews, jack hughes, connor bedard, who are only in the beginning of their meteoric rise. there are so many superstars that it is genuinely impossible to tear your eyes away.

and just think, the market of hockey is still relatively untapped. we’re seeing the surge of the PWHL, the programs created by players, teams, and communities alike to pull people in. while i recognize that the game has problems (as does every league), the future is so bright.

i want to thank you, hockey. you might not’ve known this, but you saved my life.
