This is a recap of a full 3 years of journalling in the Hobonichi 5 year journal. most of the writing is in Gàidhlig though it's not very good and I did default to English a lot this year. I've got a study schedule worked out for this year and I'm hoping to use the language more often in general.

This fountain pen. Is. STUNNING. ✨ The medium nib is juicy and wet, and the slim body is solid Sterling Silver 925, making it delicate to hold yet luxe and weighty enough to deliver the perfect writing experience. I feel pretty and elegant while recording my thoughts using this stunner, and I get excited to open my journal(s) everyday just to use it. 🥰 Now I’m wondering how Waldmann’s Fine nibs write? I noticed they’ve recently come out with even more colors (hello pink) and I’m drooling thinking about using one!

The Colorverse Tang Pyeong ink is subtle and soft with delightful shading. As always, shading appears best in print writing, but cursive writing really brings out the base shade. I always write using both styles in my journal. Print for emphasis (since it gives such a rich, bold, saturated finish), and cursive for my main body of writing.

And yes. I saved the best, creamiest, and softest bite of my cream cheese slathered and toasted bagel just for you. You’re welcome. 🥯☕️

first post of the new year! i'm finally back on campus for my last semester of law school :')) i have a really chill schedule (only 3 days of classes) so i'm going to try something crazy during my first long weekend and get all the readings done for two classes ahead of time !! crazy and ambitious? yes.. but will i try? YES!

also, i added a new hobonichi to my repertoire -- a 5-year techo! i'm hoping to stick with it for the next 5 years and in 2028, i can look back at how much things have changed since 2024! so far, my entries are really boring (apparently all i do is get coffee and do readings) but i feel like i'll look back on this time fondly.

hii im trying to decide what planner to get for classes in the fall.. here are my preferences, if you have a suggestion pls pls pls share, i'd appreciate it sm ૮꒰ ˶ ༝ •˶꒱ა ♡

weekly spreads > monthly spreads

weeks start on monday

only need it for the academic year (august-may), but more months okay

smaller size, 5" x 8" ideal but smaller okay!

i like lines but no check boxes, and must be dated

love plain neutral colors or floral designs, esp pinks and blues

last year i used a blue sky weekly planner (from target), and in the past i've used a hobonichi techo weeks! i love my bluesky sm but i wanna see if others work better!

#felt. i still have my day free and half of my commonplace book and i intended to use them two until this year ends or at least until the first few months next year, with the thought of not wanting to waste my money so i have to fully fill them both. however. yes, however, recently i've been wanting to try the hobonichi original in a6 but at the same time i know for sure it's a lot of responsibilities and i'm not sure if i'm ready to be comitted to the dailies. but still want it. still willing to try. still in torn between the original or the english one. and somehow regreted for buying the day free last june though i enjoyed it. thinking i should've gotten the july avec one. and also. also want to try the 5 year techo. it looks cute. but again. again. big responsibilities. ugh. i've had enough.

i know i operate on the fringes of general chaos but is anyone else at a total loss this planner preview season. no longer have any idea of what i want or need and feeling very blue about it

This year I’ve embarked on a 5 year long daily ritual. Each day I make an entry in my 5 year techo from Hobonichi. Once you get to year two your entries begin a dialogue with each other. As you make entries in years 2, 3, 4 & 5 you see the previous year’s entry on the same page.

Fountain pen anon here, I was wondering if you have any recommendations for ink pots?? I’m finally ready to try them

hiiiiii fountain pen anon so glad to see you back in my inbox <3 <3 <3 by ink pots, do you mean inkwells, or bottled inks?

if you mean inkwells, i have zero experience with those :/ i think it's mostly dip-pen users and people with old-timey desk pen setups that use them.

bottled inks, however....... i could write a whole essay..... and i will underneath the cut

there's a lot of terms people throw around when they talk about inks, like if an ink has a "dry" flow (more viscous) or a "wet" flow (lower viscosity). there's also special properties, like shading, sheening, and shimmer. ink properties can also highly depend on the paper you're using it on-- coated papers with a slower dry time will allow the ink to crystallize and sheen more, more absorbent paper will show less of all the ink properties.

color and shading/sheen/shimmer are all very individual! personally, i prefer inks that have a very wet flow, and have high shading. i don't like using sheen and shimmer in daily writing because they tend to smear or transfer if you accidentally touch your writing, and shimmer inks can also clog the feed of your fountain pen, especially if you're writing in a smaller nib size. my favorite ink brand is sailor. they make lots of multichrome shading inks (inks that have different colors that might show up in the edges of your lines or in the spots where the ink pools), and every single sailor ink i've tried has had a very nice medium-wet flow and good dry time, and is overall very well behaved. you can look up ink swatches online! mountain of ink has my favorite reviews, they're comprehensive and she's unparalleled in terms of the sheer number of inks she's tried.

my current personal favorites, from most practical to least practical

de atramentis - document black - this is a waterproof, ph-neutral, and solvent-resistant black ink. it's my everyday ink, because it has a reasonable dry time, is very waterproof, has a wet flow, and is a very nice dark black. it's one of the blackest black inks around! and bonus, since it's solvent resistant, you can highlight or watercolor over it without having to worry about smearing. i always have at least one pen inked with this, and it's the ink i use in my planner and 5-year hobonichi techo and any document that i want to keep. the only con to this ink is that it can stain your pens :( but you can get rid of the stains with some scrubbing

diamine - ancient copper - diamine inks tend to have a nice wet flow, and they're one of the most economical brands around. the 80mL bottle goes for 16.50 USD and trust me, 80mL is more than enough to last a lifetime. ancient copper is a reddish brown with no sheening (unless you're splattering it) and very subtle shading. it's easy to read on white and cream paper. cons: not waterproof :(

sailor - manyo - nekoyanagi - this is honestly my favorite ink that i own. it's a very pretty light purple that shades blue and green in broader nibs. when it's been sitting in your pen for a while and has time to oxidize, it shifts towards a bluer color. as always with sailor inks, it has a nice wet flow and is well behaved on all papers. it's not a very practical ink, though, and fresh out of the bottle it can be hard to read if you don't use a broad nib.

special shoutout to sailor ink studio 224. it's been a hot minute since i inked a pen with 224, but it's one of my favorites! it's pretty readable and writes as a greenish gray with purple shading, but if you leave it in your pen for a while and it oxidizes, it tends to appear purple.

My Hobonichi order arrived! I went with both the original (daily) techo AND the 5 year planner this year. I'm glad I ordered the Petite Roses cover last year as an extra cover, because I didn't like any of the 2023 A6 covers.

september: life update

I scanned through my past blogs and read my story about starting a small business on May. Well, it didn’t happen. 

I started late on July and closed my shop 2 weeks after because I felt that I lack of many things, the aesthetics and whatnot. I also felt that I lack effort on planning on my packaging and the items that I sell so I’ve decided to close my shop for a while, until now I haven’t planned on the date of my shop re-opening. There are a lot of things that I need to consider, one huge reason is because of the pandemic. I am very eager to start since last year but lately, especially the last few weeks, have been really scary. Most of my friends/people that I know got the virus so I fear that it could be easily spread here at home. I’m thinking of pushing back the re-opening date by end of this month.

Also, I’ve mentioned on my previous blog that I am inlove with my hobonichi techo A5, but to be honest, I got tired of it. I feel like the size is too overwhelming for me, so I slowly stopped using it. I switched to the traveler’s notebook regular, but I still feel like it’s too big for me to use, so I bought the passport size and gave my regular to my sister. I know I’m being impulsive especially that the TNs are very expensive. Later on, I’ve decided to go with both my regular and passport TNs and promised my sister that I’ll buy her a passport instead (I asked her about her TN size reference, and she chose the passport size). I use my hobonichi techo pages for my packaging.

On the other hand, me and my friends realized that we’ve made a smaller circle within our friend’s circle, I hope that made sense to you, but out of 8 people in the circle, 5 of us remained in touch almost everyday. We’ve created a separate messenger group which was supposedly for our passion project, but since we paused for a while due to many personal reasons (got busy with work, timezone problems, etc), we continued using it for catch ups and we don’t want to bother the other 3 in our group. Since we talked almost everyday, we’ve decided to create a discord server that has a voice channel so everyone can join to let everyone know that they’re in for a talk. We don’t force each other if they don’t wanna join so I think it’s kind of amazing because we just wan’t to let each other know that we’re available and anyone can join at any time.

I guess that’s it for now, I have so much to share but don’t have time so i’ll just post another story some other time.

Gàidhlig Word of the Day is Tinn meaning "sick"

Like goddamb clockwork I have been sick on this day for the last four years! It seems to hit two weeks out from Christmas every year so I think that's just the limit of how much sugar/booze/low excersize I can handle while also breathing retail air.

Hobonichi Techo 5-year

This upcoming year will be my sixth year with a Hobonichi Techo, an exciting milestone. While I don’t write every day, there is such enjoyment in looking back and seeing the joys, small and large, over the years.

This year has been more difficult than usual with the worries of COVID, disrupting being able to see friends and families, as well as blocking much of my planned professional and academic work that relies on international travel. I have been so thankful for the resiliency and kindness of those around me. But at the same time I have been a bit intermittent about using my Hobonichi in this year of challenge.

For next year, I am excited to try starting a 5-year Hobonichi, in which there are years for each set of two facing pages. I hope that in successive years I can fill in the pages with more joys, thoughts, and plans for the future to create something that is both a tool for action and a beautiful artifact to keep.

Also, in case others are looking, I can confirm that the Hobonichi 5-Year Techo does fit in the ohayo case. The case is full when zipped but other incidentals would fit within reason. There is not much give for pasting things in but I tend toward ink and watercolor so this suits me well. Plus who can resist a little dancing fox?
