Let's talk about Miss Charlie Bucket
I feel like this post is opening a whole can of controversial worms, and that makes me uncomfortable. I know it shouldn’t though, in a land of free speech and open minds. I even know that I myself am often pushing and advocating for people’s dreams to not be limited by the societal boundaries of gender. Let me not fall into a rabbit hole of awkward shuffling and excuse mumbling. Earlier this…

The Good Things Festival - Sydney
Dear EGT, do you mind if I share with you my disappointing FOB experience? None of my friends or family are in the fandom as I am, and I just want to tell someone who will be able to understand my grief.
I am in Australia, living near Brisbane, and when I heard that they were coming here I was ecstatic and eager to go to the Good Things Festival. I didn’t manage to get a Brisbane ticket before they were all sold out, but decided to make a weekend of it and bought a ticket to the Sydney festival, and train tickets down and back, with a couple of days accommodation in between. The train trips were 12 and 14 hours, respectively, which I personally was looking forward to, as I have two young children and the idea of two entire days in which no one could even get in touch with me via phone was BLISS.
I reached the concert venue (which was a fenced-off section of a huge and beautiful park with lots of trees) about an hour and a half before their set, enough time to decide me that none of the other bands there are anywhere near their league in performance or composition.
They came on after playing ‘We didn’t start the fire’ and ‘The Pink Seashell’ on the screen, and they were great. I was impressed with my fellow concert-goers that lots of them seemed to know the words to at least the first couple of verses of ‘We didn’t start the fire’, and most shouted out the chorus. They played ‘Love from the other side’, ‘Phoenix’, ‘Sugar’, and were most of the way through ‘Um Thurman’, when Pete stopped the music and announced that a storm was on its way, and they were being taken off stage. He hoped that they would be able to come back on.
One of the officials then told us more - the storm coming within the hour would feature thunder, lightning, heavy rain and possibly hail, and we would all have to vacate the park. Which made sense, for both the people and the equipment, but put paid to any hope of resuming the set – by the time we had all left and the storm had finished, it would be past time for the end of the festival, not to mention the logistics of getting everyone back in again. So we all left. Getting out of the park and back to my hotel was a saga in itself (all I can say is that I am glad as always that I had something to read, and that I was soaking wet when I did arrive back), but this submission is already much too long.
We got some pyrotechnics (which was brave of them given how the sky was looking) and some of the guitar chicken game between Patrick and Joe and of course their wonderful live performance, but it was so short. I can’t even get into the larger disappointment of missing all the set with the banter and the piano solo, not to mention the cover of ‘Beds are Burning’, which I would have been so excited to see, because it is still too painful. But the smaller disappointment for me, EGT, which is what I could handle focussing on, was that they didn’t get a chance to talk to us, which is partly what for me would have set the live performance apart from a group watching a recorded concert together. We didn’t get a greeting reflecting the crowd that was gathered there in that place for that time only, or any commentary on what it was like to be there, and I am so dejected about that. I know this is definitely a first-world disappointment and I had a worthwhile weekend anyway (three nights in a bed with no one waking me, HOORAY), but I am sad when I look at your website at present, and see pictures and clips from sets in Melbourne.
***
I am SO SORRY and I appreciate very much getting this submission and please know that I completely understand how disappointed you are. I had one of the canceled HMT shows, which you may or may not remember, and I totally understand that your disappointment is probably much greater given how relatively rarer it is for them to go to Australia vs. being fairly near me in the U.S. but I also totally understand some level of your disappointment. :-( The worst is feeling like they don’t care, but I think they did and they were upset it went down the way it did. They obviously can’t ever make it totally right -- you had a whole weekend that you were looking forward to that didn’t really happen the way you wanted and it’s so unfair that it happened to you and not the rest of us and I’m so sorry.
I’m glad you got some silver linings out of the weekend, and don’t be too hard on yourself, the disappointment is real when you’ve been looking so forward to something and it gets taken away and you don’t have a real replacement for it, and it’s worse if you make yourself feel guilty for feeling upset because obviously other people have much bigger disappointments, but that’s not how emotions work, alas. Be kind to yourself. ::hugs::

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (UK Tour) – 2023 Production (Original Production 25th Jun 2013)
Dir. James Brining Based on the novel by Roald Dahl
Book: David Greig Music: Marc Shaiman Lyrics: Scott Wittman & Marc Shaiman
Date watched: Mar 17, 2023 Venue: His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen
TW: Poverty, Obesity, Comic Violence and Child Abuse, Alcoholism.
Synopsis: In the shadow of a famous chocolate factory, Charlie Bucket lives in a decrepit shack with his overworked mother and four bedridden grandparents. When the mysterious Willy Wonka offers a VIP money can’t buy tour of his factory, Charlie and his family set their hopes on being one of the lucky five people who find a golden ticket in one of Wonka’s chocolate bars. By sheer luck modest Charlie joins four spoilt children and their families on a wacky tour that will change their lives for better or worse. Based on Roald Dahl novel of the same name this 2013 musical adaption takes you through the magical world of Willy Wonka through the eyes of the ever optimistic Charlie Bucket.
Rating: 3/5
Review: I want to preface this that going to the theatre is almost never a waste of time and I would highly recommend this show to anyone, particularly if you have children as this show makes a great family show with a familiar story and characters to get lost in. However I ultimately wasn’t as wowed as I expected to be. The tickets were not the cheapest I have seen Aberdeen offer and the show was running longer than the usual 5-6 days at the venue, so I was gearing up for a big spectacle. Now this show has spectacle, yes. An example would be the rubbish pile set piece adapted from the original London production that hides Mrs Pratchett’s sweet shop. The Bucket’s house with all the grandparents lying in a bed in the attic whilst Mrs Bucket makes cabbage soup below and Charlie climbs between them. The practical effects in this show are fantastic, for a touring production that at some points appears low budget, the quality of the effects and the way the actors effortlessly pull them off is admittedly a lot of fun. But this show relies a lot on screens and projections, sometimes this was successful and other times it made the stage feel empty and it took me out of the immersion. The second half which has better songs and story - Willy Wonka barely features in the first half – is unfortunately very reliant on projections to create the chocolate factory scenes. For people that know the story all the pivotal factory scenes feature one to two large set pieces that although mostly functional for the story appear cheap in comparison to the set pieces in the first half, I believe the first half pieces are either original to the first production or have been adapted from that original production. If you are familiar with the West End show that opened in 2013 – I didn’t get the chance to see it but remember the trailers and the TV doc - than you might be aware that the production values in the second half were just as high as the first with huge interactive backdrops and puppetry. The Oompa-Loompas actually made sense in that production, compared to this touring one, where they are played as robots that look suspiciously like Cybermen in a doctor who episode from 1966.
In the wake of the pandemic and a current cost of living crisis, it ultimately makes sense why this production is scaled back. Even when this show moved to Broadway it lost a fair bit of production value. Smaller set pieces that would stop the stage feeling so empty would not have gone amiss such as candy foliage in the chocolate room or more control panels in the TV or inventing rooms. I understand that as a touring production they have to accommodate for different stages – At HMT, for example, we were missing the second set piece/platform for the nut room – But smaller props and set pieces are more versatile in this way and could be moved about and swapped out when needed. I’m not sure how I would change the Oompa-Loompas because they felt like an afterthought but it was because they wanted to feature a diverse ensemble and unless there is a lower budget way to bring back the puppet illusion I am not sure but the weird robot narrative felt off. The saving grace with the projections was the way the cast interacted with them, there’s a magical moment mid show where Wonka appears to throw a pixie dust type light back and forth through the screen as he sings ‘Pure Imagination’ to the children welcoming them into the chocolate room. Most of the illusions are well done but I was able to work them all out from the back of the balcony, compared to last year’s tour of Bedknobs and Broomsticks where after two viewings in different venues I still don’t know how most of the illusions work. However I am impressed with the creativity involved in showing how a character falls in a chocolate river and gets sucked through a pipe, or turns in a blueberry, or is teleported and shrunk into a television live on stage. It would be an insult to not call it ambitious and I think all these scenes were executed successfully.
I am not too familiar with any of the music from the show outside of the one or two songs from the 1971 film. I didn’t find any of the songs particularly memorable and occasionally the lyrics were a little bit too wordy especially when sung over a loud and complex score that I felt I could have needed subtitles. Some of the lyrics were original Dahl lyrics so it could maybe explain that but weirdly because I know those lyrics quite well, those songs were the few I was able to successfully make out. Kudos to the lead Noah Walton playing Charlie on this particular night, I could clearly hear everything he was singing and his acting was spot on. Genuinely no shade to the cast, I do not believe they were at fault, could be the original score and or the sound mixing wasn’t to standard. Also genuinely cannot really remember any of the songs three days after seeing this show so yeah don’t think I’ll add this to my musicals playlist anytime soon. As mentioned the cast were phenomenal, I wasn’t sure how I would feel with adults playing the other four children besides Charlie but it absolutely worked. Good trans representation here with Teddy Hinde playing Mike Teavee and Robin Simões da Silva playing Augustus Gloop (I saw Robin in Bedknobs last year so was excited to see him again in this show playing a principal part). Also hard of hearing actor Leonie Spilsbury plays Mrs Bucket and rather appropriately the show has incorporated sign language in her scenes which is nice to see, but sometimes you feel like if it can be incorporated it so easily there why not include it in the whole show à la Deaf West but maybe that is still a pipe dream. The iconic Willy Wonka was played by Gareth Snook, if you like a darker more sarcastic Wonka then he is your man. If you are more protective of the whimsical charm of Gene Wilder’s Wonka (though many would disagree with me but I always found Wilder both creepy and angry, and no I am not a Johnny Depp stan), then maybe Snook’s interpretation won’t be your cup of tea. I really enjoyed Snook as Wonka, I was worried I wouldn’t, but the car was divided on the way home so I understand he won’t be for everyone.
I found this show to be a lot of fun even though it has been scaled down and reliant on screens to tell the story. It was an enjoyable show that I am glad I got the chance to see. Also it makes me happy seeing the sheer amount of children in the auditorium as someone who fell in love with musicals as a child, I have no doubt that this show would have brought me so much happiness and wonder if I had first seen it at that age. Even though I know the plot pretty much inside out I still found myself rooting for Charlie to find an elusive golden ticket and got goose-bumps when he did. This show has a lot of the magic from the original Dahl story so you can’t really go wrong. It isn’t the best I have seen but really not a bad production by any means and I would still recommend it.

Pip weaves long lasting sonic landscapes. Justly intonated harmonies, airy noises and slow melodies construct an organic music where the listener can both surrender to the music and actively explore the multilayered sonic facets. The duo has existed since 2006 and since then they have developed a characteristic sound in a music encompassing improvisation and collective composition. Their 2019 release ‘Possible Worlds’ is a one hour long piece utilizing an extended instrumentarium of justly tuned guitars, trumpet and synthesizers, and it documents their pinnacle work as a duo so far.

002 : PLAY PRETEND.
Starring: Lee Bohyung.
Featuring: Park Chiwon.
Summary: Bohyung keeps a secret.
Word Count: 1k.
CW: There's just smut from the very beginning. They play with the idea of exhibitionism but nobody can actually see them. Bohyung has feelings for somebody else.
Bohyung’s skin is burning so hot, he’s shocked it doesn’t sizzle when his forearm presses against the cool glass of the hotel window. The room is so high that he’s on top of the world, and below is a beautiful view: one that Bohyung may have appreciated, were his mind currently able to function.
His voice is ragged, choking out moans that twist at the end, pitching up in ways his low voice isn’t used to. It cracks and breaks, and he would be humiliated if anybody else was bringing those noises out of him. But this was Chiwon, and Chiwon had heard much worse from Bohyung’s mouth. Bohyung has always prided himself on being a pillar of stability, stoic until the end, graceful and dignified. But what always took him off guard about Chiwon- and perhaps it shouldn’t, since Bohyung had accumulated so much experience with him over the years, was that he was really big. Really big. Bohyung didn’t want to investigate this aspect of his personality too deeply, but there was something about feeling like he was one too-hard thrust away from being split in two that just undid him; and Chiwon had long since intuited that.
“I've been thinking about this all week,” Chiwon grunts out, his hips snapping roughly against Bohyung’s ass, the sound of skin on skin filling the room almost as loudly as Bohyung’s broken cries. Bohyung wants to reply, and wants to tell Chiwon that he has, too, but words don’t come to him. Chiwon is so deep inside of him, fucking him up against the hotel room window. He’s going hard and fast, like he always does, and when Bohyung’s knees finally quit wobbling and just buckle, a strong arm wraps tightly around his waist, pulling his back flush against Chiwon’s body and keeping him on his feet.
“Look down.” Chiwon mutters in his ear. He takes a step forward, pushing Bohyung’s body with him, until he’s pressed flush against the cool glass, his chest flattening against the surface. He whimpers a little, not fully registering the instruction until a large hand strikes his ass. it’s not too hard; but it stings just enough to send a jolt of interest through Bohyung’s body.
Bohyung trusts Chiwon. he’s trusted him ever since they gave one another their first kisses as trainees, wrapping their fingers together and hearing the fireworks go off in the empty dance studio after hours. Things had gotten quiet after Bohyung left HMT, with no proximity to one another it was easy for the chemistry to fizzle out. But then, a few months ago, Chiwon had debuted again, and they’d locked eyes at Music Bank and found themselves doing this again, phone calls, late night car dates, booking hotel rooms in their home city just to fuck in. When he was younger, Bohyung thought he would be in love with Chiwon forever.
“Look down.” Chiwon repeats, and Bohyung does this time. The room is too high up to see anybody on the ground; which was the only reason they could risk something like this, but realism didn’t matter. It was fantasy, and it’s no less hot when Chiwon leans in, talking in Bohyung’s ear in a low, dark voice, so different to his usual jovial manner. “The whole city’s down there, baby. So easy for them to look up and see what a little whore you are.”
Nobody can see them. Bohyung knows that, but his whines still grow sharper, a hand curling around the top of Chiwon’s forearm. Chiwon takes no pity even as tears fall from Bohyung’s eyes, just pushes him tighter against the window, pounding him with unrelenting force and pace. And there has always been so much in Bohyung’s head, a constant tornado of anxiety and good posture and perfecting the mask of the boy next door. Chiwon understood better than anybody that sometimes, Bohyung just needed to be slapped around and called a dirty slut; and Bohyung once thought he might be in love, but now he’s really just here for the rough sex and giant cock.
“i’m gonna-” Bohyung doesn’t have to finish the sentence, just the start of it has Chiwon going faster, losing a little rhythm but hitting the sweet spot with every thrust. It’s a final stretch, and shortly after Bohyung’s orgasm whitens the edges of his vision and rings his ears so loud he can’t even hear the cry he feels his throat vibrate with, Chiwon is burying his face in Bohyung’s shoulder and groaning deeply and brokenly in turn.
They give themselves a minute or two, Bohyung feels Chiwon kiss along the span of his shoulders before slowly, carefully pulling out. Bohyung mourns the fullness, hand steadying him on Chiwon’s bicep as he hobbles to the bed, collapsing face first with a ragged sigh.
“I was gonna clean you up.” Chiwon says with a laugh. “But now you’ve just spread it all over the bedsheet.”
“Window too.” Bohyung says with a groan, tucking his arms underneath his head. There's a pause, presumably as Chiwon looks to the dirtied pane, and then he groans.
“How do we clean that up?” he asks.
Bohyung shrugs. “You wanted to fuck against the window, your problem.” He says with a small laugh. Rolling onto his back, he stretches out his arms. “You can clean up later, hyung. Hold me for a bit.”
Chiwon falls into Bohyung’s open arms with an eager grin. He takes Bohyung’s face in his hands, and presses a kiss to his nose, and he stares down at him with all the affection in the world.
Bohyung could have everything, if he’d let himself truly have Chiwon.
But that’s what makes him not want him. What Bohyung wants is truly unattainable. And maybe he’s an asshole, but if he could, he’d trade Chiwon in in a heartbeat for someone else. Someone in particular, who Bohyung really isn’t supposed to be attracted to. One who’d never see him the way Chiwon does, never fuck him or love him or trust him the way Chiwon does. Bohyung thinks maybe that’s why it’s what he wants.
“How come it’s always so good?” Bohyung asks with a lopsided grin, and Chiwon gives him a shy smile as if he wasn’t just slapping his ass and unabashedly roping Bohyung into his voyeurism kink.
“Cause I love you.” Chiwon says. Because he says it all the time. Even though they’d never really been together. Chiwon told Bohyung he loved him after their first kiss, and he never rescinded it, not even all these years later.
Bohyung doesn’t respond verbally. He responds the way he always does, kissing the part of Chiwon’s neck that he really likes to be kissed, wrapping his legs tight around his waist and rolling their hips together. And in record time, a large hand wraps around his throat and pushes his head down back onto the pillow, and Chiwon has that dark look in his eyes again.
“Already?” He asks with a smirk. “You really are a whore.”
Bohyung up looks at Chiwon with an arch expression and a nod. And he’s able to purge that other face from his mind for a while.

i have two vietnamese poems to share! though english translation wont be able to translate the full extend of the musical-rthymical tone of vietnamese poetry, these two poems are my favourite in our literature books when i was in highschool.
First is Here in Vĩ Dạ Hamlet (Đây thôn Vĩ Dạ) by Hàn Mặc Tử. When he fell ill with leprosy and was awaiting his last years of life in a secluded hospital, he invented the Mad school of poetry. This poem is about his longing for the past. I put this one first because i found a professional translation of it here. The poem slowly moves from reality to dream as it goes on, in this translation it doesnt include one detail in the second verse, which is that the writer asks if the boat can carry the moon home on time tonight. HMT's poems are very difficult to reach a concrete interpretation, but i think this line is where the line blurs between the two realms, and also the moon can symbolize hope or optimistic future(past?). I cried a bit when i read the poem after hearing the teacher explained it haha. The longing and sense of loss in verse 2 or 3 may fit what you want?
Next is A Long River (Tràng Giang) by Huy Cận, dealing with homesickness. There is a rough translation here. The writer feels a profound loneliness, lost and aimless in a place so wide and reminiscent of home. The third verse can be useful to you i hope?
This might be a bit of a long shot but I'm looking for a bit of help with a future chapter of Tea Time Therapy. I'm thinking of doing another poetry chapter and thought it might be worth throwing it out there and asking if anyone knew of some good poems I could check out?
Ideally poems that you think Macaque or Sandy would resonate with but I'm open to suggestions for other characters too! (It might be nice to have a poetry session with MK and the gang at some point!).
If you've not read TTT or haven't even watched LMK but still want to make some suggestions here's a few themes that sort of fit what I'm looking for:
Loss, missing home, coming home, searching for answers, struggling with identity, life after war, tea, shadows, butterflies, dreams
But I'm open to any good poems you know of! I'm currently looking myself and already have some earmarked but as I'm sure you know there are a lot of poems out there! From all over the world! So I'd appreciate any suggestions!
If you want to check out what poems I used for the last poetry chapter, you can check out this Tumblr post.
Thank you in advance!

i still think 21st century breakdown is pretty good but every green day album after that is quite bad tbh. i went through a major green day hyperfixation a couple years ago & i used to listen to every single green day album regularly and i’m willing to admit that a good chunk of them are in fact terrible 😭i listened to their new song that came out yesterday and it was okay i guess but not something i’d go out of my way to listen to. anyways ID LOOOOOVE to see green day on tour
i do think 21cb has some good songs but i think overall as a whole there’s something about it that is disingenuous to me… something about making songs about what you know (AI and the albums before it) vs something you think you know (21cb)… but that’s just me 🫡 also LMAO me too i will be seeing them on tour. theyre genuinely the best band ive seen live and i say this as an insane person fob stan who’s seen them like 5 times now… i was a casual green day fan before i went to hmt (listened to dookie/AI/nimrod) but his gender on stage truly enraptured me so much i went on to listen to every GD release after the concert and had a fixation for awhile too lol. Can bja’s gender override bad music? we’ll find out. in 2024

9. Dream line-up
ohh idk.. realistically i probably wouldn’t be into a super long show i was about to pass out halfway through green day at hmt and had to leave the crowd but anyway. fob headlining obviously and then tbs they r always fun live even if they would most likely not tour w fob irl lol. umm waterparks but time traveled from 2018 since this is a dream lineup anddd maybe paramore. i have not seen them yet but i would like to :)
19. Farthest traveled for concert/festival
loll every concert i have been to was in glasgow + if u look at a scottish population density map u will see that the odds are i’m not travelling far to get there. have never travelled to another country for a show yet but maybe someday i’ll go to idk slam dunk or something
24. Band you’ve seen the most
regrettable waterparks w. 2017 2018 and 2020 u_u will likely not be seeing them again however unless awsten cures his brain damage and/or puts eps and double dare back on the setlist
#checking setlist fm and actually the 2022 parx setlist doesn’t look as bad as i remember it being#that might just be seeing the current era ones talking though#answered

I just want to reiterate how incredibly excited I am that Fall Out Boy got to have a concert with such a great audience. It's been a really long time -- literally years and years -- since they played a show in front of a crowd of people who were there to see THEM. I know that many people went to Hella Mega Tour to see them, but I also know that many people went to Hella Mega Tour and could not have cared less about seeing Fall Out Boy, so they were just always playing to mixed crowds. And they've played festivals and stuff but those are also mixed crowds. This was an audience that showed up to see *Fall Out Boy,* and that must have just been so wonderful for them after all those years without it. After so many years of dutiful sets of the big, recognizable hits to be like, "Now we're going to play Calm Before the Storm," and have everyone know immediately what song it was. Imagine them trying to do something like that on HMT or at a festival?
And at one of the post-hiatus shows I watched I remember Patrick saying, before he started singing Where Did the Party Go?, that it could be rough to play new stuff because nobody knew the songs yet, and I was thinking that as they walked out with a song a whole week old and the crowd shouted every word at them, like, that must have been so amazing for them, to release new music and have it immediately be welcomed with open arms. I think all the time about Patrick saying after the hiatus that he wasn't sure anyone would still care about a new Fall Out Boy album, and they just went through another hiatus and I'm glad he got proof that people still care, that they didn't show up just for the nostalgia of it but they were ready for the new stuff, too.
They have just seemed so happy these past couple of weeks, and I've thought a lot about how this album cycle feels so far like exactly what they want it to be, something for the joy of it, and I cannot imagine that that show did anything but make them even happier and more joyful about getting out there again.
