Hi, I love your work and was wondering if you've done a post breaking down Earth Kingdom clothing inspiration and what the pieces are called. I'm writing a fanfiction and having a hard time finding info. Thanks!
The thing about the Earth Kingdom is that it's the most populated and diverse of the four nations in-universe. Meaning that each area of the Earth Kingdom has its own unique flavor. Some places are based off of specific Chinese dynasties, others around the various ethnic minorities of China, and some are other Asian cultures entirely.
Ba Sing Se's aesthetic is based off of the later years of China's Qing Dynasty (1636-1912):
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Ba Sing Se Queues (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Zuko's Teashop Outfit (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Ba Sing Se Headdresses (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: The Dai Li (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Royal Earthbender Guards (tumblr.com)
Toph's family and background are meant to appear refined and wealthy so their look is based off of the later years of China's opulent Tang Dynasty (618-907):
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Toph’s Fancy Dress (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Toph’s Sleepwear (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Toph’s Hairstyle (tumblr.com)
Bumi likes to wear Chinese opera clothing and his character is broadly inspired by Lu Bu of the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280):
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Bumi (tumblr.com)
Kyoshi Island is Heian & Edo period Japan mixed with Ainu culture:
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Kyoshi Headbands (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Kyoshi Makeup (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Kyoshi’s Hair & Clothes (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Kyoshi Warriors Uniform (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Kyoshi Islanders Fashion Pt. 1 -... (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Kyoshi Islanders Fashion Pt. 2 -... (tumblr.com)
When Zuko and Iroh are on the run in the EK, they encounter a Vietnamese town and a Korean village:
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Anatomy: “The Swamp” Episode (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Architecture: Song’s Village (tumblr.com)
The tribes of the Si Wong Desert are North African crossed with Mongolian:
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Sandbenders (tumblr.com)
Chong and Lily (Secret Tunnel Hippies) wear Tibetan and Hmong clothing, respectively:
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Chong (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Lily (tumblr.com)
The refugee family with the pregnant wife is inspired by Yi people:
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Serpent’s Pass Refugees Pt. 1 (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Serpent’s Pass Refugees Pt. 2 (tumblr.com)
And, with the exception of culturally isolated areas like Ba Sing Se/Si Wong Desert/Omashu/Kyoshi/Foggy Swamp, most men in the EK wear their hair in Taoist topknots:
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Earth Kingdom Top Knots (tumblr.com)
So the sort of clothing your characters will be wearing in the EK depends on where in the country they are or are from. If you plan on inventing a new setting that takes place in the Earth Kingdom, try to choose a culture and period that reflects the mood or theme you're trying to get across.

My heart is pounding…
I was just chilling and a random thought came across my head. Koi fish!Reader being ethereal and absolutely gorgeous, but same could be said with sea butterfly! Reader, like…..
Like let me describe the reader as these types…

Alexandra butterfly!Reader - Has a more of a sultry and kinda frisky voice but it’s just the way they talk, wears more of a military style outfit mixed in with modern day clothes
Comet tailed moth!Reader - Absolutely walks with grace and elegance, nocturnal ass and loves stargazing, prefers to wear airy like outfits that flows with the wind
Guppy fish!reader - Always a gentle soul with gentle hands, sees the beauty in little and all things, soft hair that sways with even the lightest breeze, prefer baggy soft silky clothes

while i'm on the topic of the villages being based on different countries, konoha being based on japan and china is so fun – especially when you think of the different influences for each clan.
i love the idea of the uchiha being similar to the ainu people of japan. they're one of the first two clans in konoha, which goes well with the idea of them being indigenous, and it also allows you to mess with the idea of them being the most traditional because of their native identity.
along with that, there's the idea of tenten (someone who has more chinese influence in her outfit than other characters) being from a more chinese indigenous inspired family whose a sub-ethnic group of the miao, maybe like the hmong people?
or the hyūga being most similar to ethnonational japanese people and having the most unfiltered japanese influence, or even being inspired by the first japanese group, the yayoi people.
anyways, people should open their minds to the hidden villages being inspired by more countries than just japan.
#naruto#naruto headcanons#sorry this is kinda jumbled im just getting some thoughts out#konoha#konohagakure#uchiha clan#hyuga clan#aloeverants

Traditionally, in most clothes, you will find these colors, patterns unique, and some use a set of bright colors that are quite eye-catching in nature. One such culture is the Hmong culture. Use of the different combination of color, in different portions with shoes are the trademarks of Hmong Chinese Outfits,
Originated from the Chinese Culture worn by Hmong people, these outfits are worn by the Hmong People. They have a very different type of pattern of clothes. They are strongly recognized by the intricate embroidery, which is done with the halo of thread and needles. This embroidery work is done by the Hmong people. They get the names, words, phrases also imprinted on the clothes. These embroidered pieces are intricate needlework with threads in the fabric. Although it takes a lot of effort and pain in sewing the pattern in the fabric, the overall color makes it look right.
Hmong clothes are made with a lot of emotion, and it speaks out the story behind them. People who design the clothes speak out a story behind making them. These designs determine the story they explain through these designs on the clothes. It speaks from which clan it belongs, the background of the story, and the richness in the culture.

I have always been fascinated by the outfits but it wasn’t until a few years back when i learned the term that my interest in chinese history really picked up. Plus mainly bc I am Hmong and wanted to know more about Miao culture and Chinese influences. Also, i love how informative your tumblr is.

A Miao (Hmong) girl dressed in traditional silver jewelry during a wedding in Guizhou, China
The Miao is an ethnic group recognized by the government of China as one of the 55 official minority groups. Miao is a Chinese term and does not reflect the self-designations of the component groups of people, which include (with some variant spellings) Hmong, Hmub, Xong (Qo-Xiong), and A-Hmao.
The Chinese government has grouped these people and other non-Miao peoples together as one group, whose members may not necessarily be either linguistically or culturally related, though the majority are members of Miao-Yao language family, which includes the Hmong, Hmub, Xong, and A-Hmao and the majority do share cultural similarities. A few groups designated as Miao by the PRC do not even agree that they belong to the ethnic group, though most Miao groups, such as the Hmong and Hmub, do agree with the collective grouping as a single ethnic group – Miao.
It is said that in ancient times the Miao people lived around the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the Yellow River basin. Long periods of war forced them to frequently relocate until they arrived in Southwest China where they live today. During the migrations, they exchanged their property for silver and crafted it into various kinds of jewelry and ornaments. Miao people also believe silver jewelry wards off evil spirits and can purge of the body of toxins. While the Miao people now live settled lives, silver remains indispensable. During important occasions like weddings and festivals, they wear silver ornaments from head to toe, like silver headdresses, chains, rings and bracelets. The whole outfit can weigh between 3kg and 4kg, with the heaviest reaching 10kg to 15kg. Butterflies and maples, both seen as holy in their culture, are the most common patterns in Miao silver jewelry. Lacking their own written language, embroidery and silversmithing play a key role in passing down Miao history and culture. Silversmithing is passed down generation to generation, with craftsmen developing incredible skills without the aid of modern production methods. Some filamentary silver is even thinner than a human hair.

BDRPWriMo Task #16: TV Soundtrack -- Music In Just Trust Me
So, I was gonna do ten songs but I ran out of interest so here’s just two. I’m gonna re-do this task as just a part two of last years, where The Robinsons were a tv show lmao.
But I wanted to post this bc I did work hard lmao
so here’s 2 songs in the fake tv show Just Trust Me
-----
Just Trust Me is an American TV show produced by Netflix. Franny is one of the show’s co-producers, along with fellow Seoul Hanoi’d band member Mary Xiong, and several other Southeast Asian Americans connected to entertainment.
Just Trust Me is loosely based on the lives of Franny Sor Robinson, Mary Xiong, and Lydia Manivong, a Lao-American director and screenwriter who grew up in the same small Georgia town as Franny Robinson.
The show is set in the current day though, not the 90s, which is when Franny was growing up.
The five main characters are:
Zoey Vongvilay - a Lao-American girl whose mother immigrated from Laos and whose father is the first-generation son of Lao refugees; the character is played by a Canadian actress who is mixed Lao-Chinese-Vietnamese. Lydia Manivong’s life provided a lot of inspiration for the character.
Serey Sim/Nielson - a Cambodian-American girl whose biological parents both immigrated from Cambodia, but they divorced and her biological father isn’t in her life. The character has a white American step-father (whose last name she legally takes in season 3 when she surprises her family with the name change on a visit home from college) and step-brother, and a biracial little sister. She is played by a Cambodian-Burmese-American actress. This character is based heavily on Franny, with some key differences
Franny is biracial, her biological father is white
Franny’s real life step-father, who adopted her and IS her father as far as she is concerned, IS white but he is from Switzerland, not the US
Franny has two step-brothers, not just one, and has no younger half-siblings
Her mother didn’t immigrate by choice, she was a refugee resettled to America in the 70s, but since the show takes place in the 2010s-2020s, that had to be updated so it would make sense for the mother to have a teenage daughter
Song Bee - A Hmong-American girl whose parents immigrated to the US, her mother as a child, her father in his 20s. She is played by an actress of mixed Hmong-Thai-Indonesian-Pakistani-white background. Parts of her are inspired by Mary Xiong
TaShana “Shayna” Brewer-Pham - A girl with a Jamaican immigrant father and first-gen Vietnamese-American mother. Franny was insistent that one of the main characters be biracial. Originally, it was going to be Serey’s character (her original name was Serey Nielson, a nod to Franny’s husband’s first name being Cornelius), but when the Japanese-black actress auditioned for what was supposed to be a recurring character with no specified ethnicity named “Julie”, the writers, one of whom was black-Vietnamese herself, wrote TaShana for her.
George ”Fitzy” Fitzpatrick VI - A boy who is fifth generation Japanese-American on his mother’s side, and even more Irish-American on his father’s side. He was a recurring character in the first season and was moved to main in the second. He’s played by a biracial Japanese-white actor.
Setting: Originally, a small town in Texas, then, in season three, when the main five move on to university, largely in Austin with scenes in their hometown as well.
Premise: Just Trust Me is a comedy-drama about five young Texans of diverse backgrounds as they struggle with identity, expectations, stereotypes, school, part-time jobs, romance, and social lives. There are subplots involving many other characters, but the main 5 are in every episode.
Franny’s character in the show: Ary Meas/Aunty Ary, Serey’s aunt, is played by Franny Sor Robinson. She is a recurring character (usually in 3-5 episodes every fourteen-seventeen episode season) and is usually there to bail Serey out of trouble with her mother (Ary’s sister), or who Serey tests out sharing major news with. Ary is eccentric and a bit of a disaster, but a disaster who loves her niece. She always has a new suitor, and has been married and divorced since the series began.
Theme song: Geraldine by Avett Brothers
1: Episode 1x01: San Rafael
Song: Jeas Cyclo by Yol Aularong
The scene opens with Serey pedaling furiously on her bicycle, at an ungodly speed with her backpack on. She almost hits an armadillo but shrieks and swerves out of the way and not long after she’s back on course, she hears a car engine rev and laughter. She looks over her shoulder and rolls her eyes and groans because coming up behind her are the biggest assholes in school. They drive recklessly and speed through a muddy puddle, splashing mud all over her, and startling her off her bicycle and into a ditch. She looks up into the camera and spits out ditch water and dirt.
Serey flicks some mud off of her and hops back on the bicycle.
Cut to school and Serey beelines for the girls’ bathroom. As the song fades out, another student appears from out of frame with some clothing folded up in her hands.
“Brought your real clothes!” She chirps.
“Thanks, Zoey.” Serey sighs, drying her hands, then she begins stripping right there in the main part of the bathroom and changing outfits.
The true Franny story: [from an interview given at an event premiering the first episode] “We lived pretty close to my high school, so even if we could afford cars for my brothers and I, I probably would have bikes before it got to be winter anyway. But some people really hated me, like really hated me, so I’d been run into ditches like Serey, yeah. It got to the point where I’d keep my real nice clothes at Daniel’s — Daniel Maitland, my partner in Dara & Danny — at his house, and call him every night and tell him what outfit pack for tomorrow. That went on for a school year, until those kids graduated.”
Why Franny chose this song for this scene: “I wanted the first song the viewer heard to grab them and let them know what kind of show this was, like who it was a show about. It’s about Southeast-Asian-Americans living in the South. They are influenced equally by pop music they listen to with their friends, the indie music they discover on Spotify alone in their rooms, the country music playin’ at restaurants in their towns, and the music their parents and grandparents brought with them from Asia. So I wanted the Asian influence to smack everyone’s ears in the face.
2: Episode 3x05: George Not Straight
Song: The Cowboy Rides Away by George Strait
This is the episode where George “Fitzy” Fitzpatrick comes out as ga to his conservative Catholic parents. He’s at a Mexican restaurant on karaoke night in their hometown during fall break with his parents and the rest of the Core 5, and the actor that plays Fitzy actually sings this song. In the scene, Fitzy sings his karaoke song but he keeps looking between his parents, his friends, and the Latino man who is a recurring character (Jose Ruiz) and was Fitzy’s ex boyfriend.
Jose broke up with Fitzy in season two after Fitzy refused to come out to his conservative family. Jose respected his decision but also asked that his decision to not want to be a secret be respected as well, and ended the relationship.
Before he can finish the song, Fitzy just trails off and sighs and stands there on stage, frozen. He looks dead at his parents as the karaoke track continues on and says into the mic. “Mom...dad…”
Serey gasps, TaShana mutters ‘he isn’t…’, and Song goes ‘he is!’
“I’m gay. I love men.” And drops the mic and calmly walks off stage, into the throng of tables, and his four best friends scurry out of the restaurant behind him.
The original song plays while they’re running to the pond in their favorite spot in the woods, and they jump in the water in their clothes and splash each other, they’re having fun!! But Fitzy’s expression flits between joy and anxiety as he plays with his friends like they’re kids again
Franny, on this episode: I’m queer. I came out as bisexual before I even knew that there was a word for what I was. I told my family “I feel about girls the same way I feel about men.” They accepted me, but they were worried about me. We were from a conservative, rural area, and was already a woman of color you know? But I knew kids at my high school - White kids, black kids, Asian kids, Hispanic kids, whose parents were ultra conservative. And some of those parents loved their kids more than their wrong opinions, but others were like Fitzy’s. Like, I had a black male classmate that was kicked out of his home for being gay sleeping in my bed with me for two weeks until he moved on to the next friend’s house, becasue he had nowhere else to go. Queerness is not exclusive to white people and neither is homophobia. Serey’s character has always been openly bisexual, like I was by her age when the show started, and for our families it wasn’t a big deal. But we wanted to represent multiple queer narratives, not just one.

Cultural Fashion: The Nomads Pt. 2
AKA “The Secret Tunnel Hippies”. I did not expect one-off joke characters to have such interesting cultural origins behind their designs, but Avatar always finds a way to hit me with wonderfully unexpected cultural details.
Now on to Chong’s equally-as-spacey wife, Lily! The first thing that struck me about her design is the turban-like head wrap she wears. Although there was an event in Chinese history known in English as the “Red Turban Rebellion”, turbans have never been a staple of Han Chinese fashion, especially not for women.
However, there is an ethnic group originally from China that is known for wearing dark head wraps that resemble turbans: Hmong Daw or White Hmong. Specifically the Hmong Daw from Xieng Khouang, Laos. Once I realized where Lily’s “turban” came from, the rest of her outfit suddenly made sense. The predominantly black color scheme always seemed out of place for such a carefree and easygoing character, but it makes sense if it’s inspired by the look of traditional Hmong Daw clothing.
Note the predominantly black shirt with colorful trim, the elbow-length sleeves, the waist-high sash, the bell-shaped skirt, the flats, and the head wrap. Pretty much the only major accessories that Lily is missing are the apron and the jewelry.
One can’t help but notice that both Chong and Lily’s design influences are from cultures/ethnic groups that have been pushed out of of their ancestral homelands by Chinese expansion.

fifty question studyblr tag.
questions from @organizedminimalist
i decided to start off this baby studyblr with a questionaire studyblr tag. <3 i love doing these types of things. it’s super great exercising for the brain... well, specifically my own brain if not others, lol!
you can check out organizedminimalist’s answers here! btw, she tagged everyone!
GENERAL
What country are you studying in now? USA
What’s your major or specialization? I have no idea, but I’m considering Art History, Neuroscience/Neurology/...everything neuro lol, Psychology, &/or Business
What year are you in? 1st year in General Studies atm.
What courses are you taking (/will be taking if on break)? I haven’t even enrolled/picked my classes yet! lol!
Favorite course? I have a feeling it’s going to be Drawing, but who knows?
What languages do you know? Want to learn? I am only fluent in English atm, but I used to be fluent in Lao. Languages I’d like to learn?: (especially) Korean & Japanese, Latin, French, Italian, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Thai, refresh on Lao, and Hmong (due to being half Hmong.)
What language do you study in? Do you think in a different language? Study in English, and I think in English... with a whole bunch of different language onomatopoeia (thanks Korean Dramas.)
Career aspiration? SO MUCH ASPIRATIONS, but I mostly want to be an artist, writer, and entrepreneur or possibly a CEO.
If you couldn’t be #8, what would you be? Psychologist, Art Professor, or Wedding Planner.
Moment you knew what you wanted to do? I slowly understood what I wanted to do from little snippets of ambition. I finally understood the whole picture about a year or two ago.
STUDY ENVIRONMENT
Where is your favorite place to study? Quiet places that allow my study music and with LOTS of desk space (coffee shops, library, closed rooms, etc.)
When is your favorite time to study? I don’t have a favorite time lol, but late mornings/late nights to early mornings. I like it to be dark outside basically.
Clean desk or organized mess? Depends on the mood, but clean messy...if that makes sense? The exact stuff I’m studying with would be messy while everything else is organized.
Music or no music? What type? Music for sure. Softly played piano covers (k-pop piano covers, anime piano covers, etc. I also enjoy easy listening music like Crywolf. *PRO BACKGROUND MUSIC TIP: USE AMBIENT-MIXER.COM FOR THESE COOL BACKGROUND SOUNDS LIKE HOGWART’S LIBRARY. YO.
Name top 3 worst distractions. Social media, Korean drama, youtube... other life planning (making lists, pinterest, etc.)
Exam time, dress up or dress down? In sweats. I’m always in sweats.
Exam time, hair up or hair down? Depends on the mood... but most likely high up pony-tail. My favorite hairstyle.
Favorite outfit for studying? Same-old sweats. Maybe in pj shorts this time if it’s hot. But tbh, even if it’s cold... I’d wear shorts and jus use a blanket.
Favorite study scent? After rain morning.
STUDY TOOLS
Name 5 things you would consider your ‘study essentials’. 0.3 mm or smaller mechanical pencil, small black MUJI eraser, 0.5 mm or smaller black gel pen, small ruler (6ish inch,) graph paper, hobonichi techo planner (random notes are in there,) laptop/phone (online notes & pinterest for study layout inspo,) books, and music.
Hardcopy books or pdf online? Both are okay with me, but the physical book is a tad bit easier.
Favorite study snack? drink? Goji berries or blueberries... maybe grapes. Slightly chilled water or coconut water.
Favorite pen (or pencil)? Pilot for my pen. I lost my pencil, so I’m not sure about that one at this moment. I’ll edit it in later.
Favorite notebook/paper? I love, love, love graph paper (specifically the SMALL squares like within the hobonichi techo.) I also love the Cambridge notebook papers, but they’re on the expensive side. As for blank pages? Textured sketchbooks like the Canson Mixed Media Pads.
Name 5 apps/tools that help you be productive. Evernote, but recently an addition of the Bear app (transitioning note-taking app,) Tick Tick, TORA reminder app, myHomework Student Planner, and still discovering!
How many pens/pencils/markers are in your pencil case? I haven’t been pen/pencil/marker shopping yet... so 2 black gel pens, 1 0.3 mm mechanical pencil, and the rest are MUJI erasers and a ruler.
Backpack or purse? Backpack, and SOMETIMES a shoulder laptop bag.
How many notebooks do you have? ROFL. A LOT. I’m a journal/notebook/sketchbook-hoarder-in-responsible-journal/notebook/sketchbook-purchasing-training member. My favorite “note” journal/notebooks are my hobonichi techo, moleskine journals, my large Cambridge lined notebook, and graphing notepad. Since I’m trying to avoid buying journals/notebooks/sketchbooks, I’ve been using Evernote & Bear like crazy.
STUDY HABITS
How do you motivate yourself when you’re not motivated? Take a break, stroll through the amazing study note-taking on pinterest/tumbr/instagram, think about my future and the ambitions I have, &/or listen inspirational speeches.
Pump up routine before writing an exam? Bag needs to be packed, have to have showered, dressed nicely, hair done and minimal make up applied - and listen to either EDM or coldplay on my way there. Finish a crying session with Korean Dramas, reading serious-businss tumblr threads, get dressed in sweats, put on my eyebrows, contemplate on eyeshadow or eyeliner, coconut oil & bite lip agave lip mask lip time, tie my hair up, pack my bag, sit down and scroll through phone one last time for a while AND ALSO EAT SOME FOOD, head there, and pray I’ll stay awake.
Crammer or pacer? Both, but mostly crammar. I for some reason have a part time studying/remembering long-term knowledge under pressure. Short-term memory is stronger for pressure/stress.
Type of learner (kinesthetic, auditory, visual)? Visual and a little bit of kinesthetic.
How do you plan? (digital, planner, lists, no plan, etc.) myHomework planner, Tick Tick if needed, planner, more lists (the more I write it down, the more I remember to do it/makes it a higher priority in my mind.)
Preferred note-taking method? Typed/digitally AND hand-written/drawn. I have to do both.
Do you make to-do lists? How? Hell yes, I do. I make lists EVERYWHERE. I LOOOOVE making lists.
Do you stick to your to-do lists? Depends on the list. But majority of the time. It has to be high-priority/a list I create on every item I can think of.
Group study or independent study? Independent.
Average number of hours of sleep during exam time? I can’t do less than 6 hours, or I’ll pass out during the day/exam.
Ever pulled an all-nighter? Not for school related things... SO FAR.
STUDY MENTALITY
What do you do to recover from getting a grade lower than expected? I feel down about it, but I know I end up having a decent to great grade at the end of the road. That’s all that matter to me... trying my best.
One advice you’d give others? There is more than one way to get to where you want to go. Put your heart into your work. The more genuinely interested you feel, the easier and BETTER you learn and remember anything. Find interest. Find purpose.
What are you most proud of right now? Surviving schoolwork with lack of motivation from depression.
Favorite quote to keep you going? Oh my, too much... just too much quotes. LOTS.
Favorite way to de-stress? Sleep.
OTHER
Favorite 5 studyblrs? I’m new, so I haven’t seen a lot yet!
How often do you check Tumblr? At least once a day.
Hobbies when you’re not studying? Art, pinteresting, taking notes/making lists, thinking about the future, etc.
Favorite compulsory-reading book? I’m not sure lol.
First nerdy joke that pops into your head. My favorite one.
