Tell me your thoughts on Kay Faraday

KAY FARADAY love that kid. She's one on the list of characters that I did like my first run through but started liking more and more after going back to the investigations games; before she was still a character I liked but probably lower on the tier of characters I enjoyed but now has become one of my favourites.

I feel like there's a lot of depth to Kay that tends to be easily passed over and quite possibly is something the writers didn't intend; I pretty frequently see her listed as people's least favourite assistant character, and plus, her being in the investigations games which are some of the most obscure ones, fewer people are familiar with her in contrast to say Maya or Trucy. One of the most common complaints about her is her frequent "I'm gonna steal stuff! >:3" attitude that she doesn't actually follow through on; a lot of her dialogue is like that, and I totally get how that could wear people down.

At the same time though... we don't know much about Kay's life between the flashback case and the investigations games, which is kind of an outlier among the other assistants. From what we do know, she lived with her mother's relatives who lived far away, but it's never explained who she's staying with during the investigations games, or where. In addition to that, once she gets amnesia, and presumably is missing for a good portion of the day, nobody ever calls her (despite her having her phone with her, as we see in the Grand Turnabout which takes place immediately after,) and it's not until the afternoon that Karin finally takes her to the place on the business card, despite having found her the night before. That suggests that there's no one out there really looking for this kid.

Her amnesia characterization is also something I find pretty interesting because of how different it is from normal Kay. In other situations like 2-1 with Phoenix's amnesia, even though he had no idea who he was, he still had some subconscious memories (knowing when to object, knowing what to do in the courtroom, etc) and his personality didn't change much. Everything about Kay changes when she gets amnesia right down to the way that she speaks, and she frequently sees herself as a burden, or a horrible person, and is genuinely baffled by the fact that someone believes in her and wants to help her. And she does still have some subconscious memories, as evidenced by the one part where Edgeworth tries to do some word association tests with her:

Edgeworth: Hmm... It seems you have also forgotten the names of objects. This might be helpful for recovering your memories. Just repeat after me. Bookcase.

Kay: ...Broken safe.

Edgeworth: Stained glass.

Kay: ...Stolen goods.

Edgeworth: Books on the law.

Kay: ...Crooks on the lam.

Edgeworth: Statue of the goddess.

Kay: ...Snatched loot of the Great Thief.

Edgeworth: (Are all her mistakes biased towards a certain way...?)

Overall, this does point to an overall trend that somehow for one reason or another Kay subconsciously thinks of herself as a burden on others, and by losing her memories, she loses any reason she has to hide that from other people.

Like I said before, we don't know much about her home life after Byrne died until Investigations, and similarly, we don't know much about her personality. A lot of her personality in the games is based around being a "Great Thief" and a "Hero of Justice", both of which are things she adopts after reading her father's notebook revealing him as part of the Yatagarasu. We have no idea what she was like before that, orphaned and sent to live with distant relatives and without her central "purpose" in life.

My takeaway from all of this is that in the investigations games, Kay is desperately trying to cling onto the persona of her father, or who she thinks her father used to be, to give her purpose and courage in life. AAI2 in particular has the theme of parents and children, and how children can either follow in their parents' footsteps or deviate from them: Miles choosing in the end to live as a prosecutor instead of a defense attorney like his father, though set on the same overall goal; Sebastian opting to stay as a prosecutor, but with different goals than his father; the main antagonist rejecting his father in every way and yet in some ways still ending up just like him. Kay similarly fits into this parallel. She spends the whole game searching for a three-person team just like the original Yatagarasu, but at the end, decides to follow her own path:

Kay: How should I put it...? Until now, I've always been chasing after my father... ...so that I could become a Great Thief, just like him!

Edgeworth: (Like the previous Yatagarasu, I suppose...)

Kay: But... watching you, Mr. Edgeworth, made me think. Maybe, instead of chasing after my father, I should find my own path. ...I mean, you didn't become a defense attorney either.

Edgeworth: (Chasing after a parent's shadow isn't the only path in life for a child, after all...)

Kay: I'm going to aim to be a hero in my own way!

It's a little hard to imagine what Kay's life would be if she isn't a Great Thief, and besides, she's still a kid, and has lots of room to grow and become something completely different than she expects. Unlike the other assistants, the ending of aai2 seems to imply that she may not stay in her chosen career (like Maya going back to Kurain, or Ema continuing her forensic training, or Trucy continuing on as a magician). I think that's a pretty interesting thing I rarely see explored (though of course I definitely don't mind seeing Kay in a Yatagarasu-adjacent position in the future!)

Overall, yeah, I really like Kay, the more I think about her the more interesting things I can come up with. I think a lot of her personality has deeper implications than initially appear on the surface, and it would be super neat to see how she grew up in the post-7yg timeline (... though I doubt I trust capcom to do that in an interesting way haha.)

Pure Heart Valley was being attacked by a monster yet again. And poor (Y/N), who had just been trying to enjoy a nice walk through the village square, was caught right in the middle of it, unfortunately for them. They'd just barely managed to escape being stepped on by the beast, but now they were faced with the problem of getting somewhere safe.

“Hey, (Y/N)!”

“Badgerclops, thank goodness!” The (animal species) breathed a sigh of relief. “Boy am I glad to see you!”

“What, you're not happy to see me too or something?” A familiar voice jokingly asked, a black blur zipping past (Y/N) and striking the monster, knocking it backward. It was Sheriff Mao Mao. Just the sight of him made (Y/N)'s heart beat faster.

'Of course I am!' (Y/N) thought, but couldn't say. They were far too shy around Mao Mao, even in life-threatening situations, apparently. While (Y/N) got along with Badgerclops just fine and had become quite friendly with him and Adorabat, it was a completely different story when it came to the sheriff of Pure Heart Valley. The (animal species) was lucky to get themselves to even say hello to him. They got tongue-tied whenever he greeted them and wanted nothing more than to hide away if he tried to joke around with them.

And even now they couldn't help the nervousness that bubbled up inside. But that also could've been due to the fact that they'd just been swept up into the monster's claws. Wait, what-

“Don't worry, (Y/N), we'll get you out of there!” Mao Mao called, dodging an attack from the monster's long, whip-like tail. “Just hold on!”

'I don't exactly have many choices' (Y/N) thought, trembling in fear as the monster began to carry them off. 'But I can't just sit here and wait for Mao Mao to rescue me! I have to at least try to save myself!' They took a few deep breaths, trying to calm themselves down as best they could. The more they struggled, the tighter the monster's grip on them got. Then (Y/N) got an idea. It was most likely a pretty stupid idea, but it was the only thing they could think of. The (animal species) took a deep breath and bit into the monster's hand, sinking their teeth in as hard as they could.

The beast shrieked, an ear-splitting noise that caused (Y/N)'s ears to flatten against their head. And then they were falling, but not for long.

“Gotcha!” (Y/N) suddenly found themselves in Mao Mao's arms and in seconds, they were back on the ground. “You okay, (Y/N)?”

“Huh?! Oh, uh...y-yes”

“Good” Mao Mao turned to see Badgerclops shooting his laser cannon at the beast. “Be right back” He mumbled, hurrying off with a heroic battle cry.

Within minutes, after an impressive display of their many signature moves, Mao Mao and Badgerclops had defeated the beast, much to the joy and relief of the Sweetie Pies. (Y/N) was off a few yards away from the crowd that was forming around Mao Mao and Badgerclops, trying to control the trembling that had spread throughout their body.

“Hiya, (Y/N)!”

“Oh! Adorabat, y-you startled me!”

“Sorry! Just wanted to make sure you were okay. I saw that the monster grabbed you!”

“Yeah...I-I'm fine now”

“You sure?” A new voice asked, making (Y/N) jump and turn around fast, coming face to face with Mao Mao.

“...Yeah...Yes, I...I'm...I'm...okay now” (Y/N) managed to choke out. Truth be told, they were pretty shaken up, they'd never been caught smack dab in the middle of a monster battle before and they'd certainly never been captured by one before that day.

“Listen, (Y/N), if you're still nervous, you know, about what happened, I can-”

“No! N-no, I'm okay, Mao Mao” (Y/N) blurted out, their heart beating fast. Their anxiety was starting to kick in, really eating away at them. Home, that's where they needed to be right then. “I-I have to go now” And they rushed off before Mao Mao could say anything else.

“Why doesn't (Y/N) like me?! I don't get it, they never want to talk to me, not even after I saved their life!”

“Dude, calm down” Badgerclops mumbled, glancing up from his handheld game. It was a few minutes after (Y/N) ran off, an unusually quiet moment in the valley. “(Y/N) is just shy, that's all. They like you, believe me”

“They...they do?” Mao Mao crossed his arms. “Hmph, well they have a funny way of showing it”

“Mao, I'm serious, I've gotten to know (Y/N) pretty well, they're painfully shy, they hardly said a word to me when I first started talking to them”

“Yeah!” Adorabat piped up. “They're not as social as everyone else in Pure Heart Valley, but that's just because they're shy! They're really cool and funny once you get to know them”

“Hmm...you're sure they already like me?”

“Yep”

“Definitely!”

“Well then, I have a new mission! I won't rest until (Y/N) is my friend!”

…

(Y/N) took a deep breath, closing their front door behind them. “That's better” They mumbled, still feeling shaken up, but slightly more comfortable now that they were finally back home. “Maybe some tea will help calm me down,” They said, thinking out loud as they headed for the kitchen. A knock at the door suddenly startled them, making them jump.

“Hey, (Y/N)!”

'Mao Mao! What is he doing here?' (Y/N) thought, trying not to panic. “Um, j-just a second!” They called, desperately trying to think of some excuse as to why he had to leave.

Another knock made them swallow nervously. “Hey, (Y/N), everything okay in there? I really need to talk to you, it's important!”

“Uh, o-okay, coming!” (Y/N) sighed, taking a deep breath as they approached their front door. So much for relaxing with a cup of tea. They slowly, hesitantly opened the door a crack. “Um, y-yes, Mao Mao?”

“Hey, uh, can I come in?”

“S-Sure thing” The (animal species) slowly opened their door, allowing the sheriff to step inside.

“I don't think I've ever been inside your house before. Nice place you got here” Mao Mao commented.

“...T-Thanks. It, it's not much, but, um, i-it's home” (Y/N) said quietly, looking anywhere but at Mao Mao. “Would, um...would you like s-some tea?”

“Oh sure, that sounds nice, thanks”

“just, just make yourself at h-home” (Y/N) said, making a beeline for the kitchen, taking a deep breath as they began preparing not one, but two cups of tea. 'This is fine, it's fine' They thought, trying to just concentrate on making the tea. 'We'll have some tea, he'll tell me whatever it is he's here to tell me and that'll be it'

“You need any help in there, (Y/N)?” Mao Mao asked.

“Um, n-no! No t-thank you”

“'Kay”

“You can do this, (Y/N)” They whispered to themselves, taking a deep breath as they put their dirty spoon in the sink and carried two cups of hot tea into the living room where Mao Mao was standing, looking at a framed picture of (Y/N) and their parents on the wall.

“Are these your parents?”

“Um, yes”

“That's a really nice picture”

“Thank you” (Y/N) mumbled, slowly holding out one of the cups to him. “Um, h-here's your tea”

“Thanks, (Y/N)”

“You, you're welcome” The (animal species) walked over and sat on their couch, Mao Mao sitting beside them, but not too close. He was remembering what Badgerclops had told him just before he came to see (Y/N).

“They're really sensitive, dude. Just be careful about what you say to them, alright? Even being physically too close might make them uncomfortable”

“Mao Mao?”

“Huh?” (Y/N)'s voice snapped him out of his thoughts. The (animal species) was glancing up at him, seeming like they were hesitant to speak. “Are you, um, okay?”

“Oh yeah, I'm fine. Just remembering something Badgerclops told me earlier”

“Oh” (Y/N) cleared their throat. “So, um, y-you came here to t-talk to me about something?”

“Yes, yes I did” Mao Mao nodded. “Well, I wanted to make sure you're okay. I mean, you did get snatched up by the monster earlier”

“I-I'm fine now” (Y/N) said quietly, their grip tightening around their cup as they slowly took a sip of their tea.

“That's good! I mean, it's just...” Mao Mao thought carefully about what he was going to say next. “I was just...worried about you”

“You...r-really?” (Y/N) felt their face heating up.

“Well, yeah. Not only are you a citizen of the valley I've sworn to protect, but you...you're my friend, (Y/N). At least, I'd like to think we're friends”

“You, you want to be my friend?”

“Of course! I don't really know you as well as Badgerclops and Adorabat do, but I'd like to. You seem pretty cool”

“Cool, m-me?” (Y/N) felt their blush deepen. “Wow, no one's ever called me cool before”

“Well, you are!” Mao Mao laughed. “I mean, the way you just bit that monster today? That was super cool! I don't think anyone I've ever saved has actually had the guts to fight back. And if that's not cool, I don't know what is”

“oh my” (Y/N) couldn't help the giggle that burst out of them. “That, um, t-that really means a lot, coming from you”

“Because I'm awesome?”

“Well, um, y-yes, of course. But also because, uh...” (Y/N) felt their heart pounding hard in their chest. “I, um...I like you, Mao Mao”

“Wait a second, you do?! You really like me?!”

“Um, yes...very much”

“Alright!” Mao Mao cheered, pumping his fist in the air. He quickly cleared his throat when (Y/N) flinched, startled by his outburst. “Sorry, um, just got a little excited there”

“it, it's okay”

“So, um...look, I'd really like for us to hang out more if that's cool with you. I want to get to know you better, (Y/N)”

The (animal species) smiled shyly. “I-I'd like that, Mao Mao. I'd like that very much”

The sheriff grinned, about to say something else when suddenly a loud roar cut through the air, making (Y/N) jump. Mao Mao quickly grabbed their hand. “it's okay, (Y/N). Sounds like duty calls”

(Y/N) blushed, glancing down at their hands. “I, um...I guess you'd better go then”

“Yeah. But I'll be back tomorrow for more tea?”

“Yes...that sounds wonderful”

Badgerclops suddenly swung open the front door, Adorabat on his shoulder. “Hey guys, sorry to interrupt, but we've gotta-!”

“We know,” Mao Mao said, turning and smiling at (Y/N). “So, tomorrow?”

(Y/N) smiled shyly and nodded. “Tomorrow” The (animal name)'s heart beat faster as Mao Mao's smile widened, squeezing (Y/N)'s hand before he rushed off with the others, calling out a quick goodbye over his shoulder.

Champ: whistle ♪ The both of you are super raring to go. Well then, whoever catches the most leaves within the stipulated time is the winner, yeah? 

Champ: First up is Touji, Ready-- 

// At the sound of “Go”, Touji slams into the tree, sending a large amount of leaves raining down. // 

Yuni: ! 

Rintarou: ( Just by the number of leaves alone, he’s already better off than Yuniyuni was earlier. We might be in a pinch. ) 

Touji: Shishishi Shi, Shi Shiiiiiiii! ! ! 

// As expected of someone who spent the whole night practicing. With brisk Jabs, Touji was able to catch 90% of the leaves. // 

Champ: Time’s up. 

Touji: pant 18, huh? I missed 10%... However, that means I still have room to grow, right, Mikekado-senpai? 

Shion: I wasn’t paying attention. 

Champ: Kay next, it’s Yuniyuni’s turn. 

Yuni: ….. 

// Yuniyuni steps up to the tree. If he can’t get at least 19 leaves to fall, it won’t even be a competition. That said, based on Yuniyuni’s earlier result… // 

Rintarou: ( ….. ) 

Champ: Alright on your marks, Ready… Go! 

Yuni: Ya! ! !

Rintarou: ( A world where. )

// Grabbing the last leaf, Yuniyuni turns back to us while panting. // 

Rintarou: You did good~! ! ! 

Shion: That was amazing. 

Touji: Ho-how many did you get?! 

// Touji starts to count the leaves in Yuniyuni’s hand but the other me interrupts him. // 

Champ: There’s no need to count, right? It’s obvious that the loser… 

Champ: Is you. 

Touji: Ho-how could this be… Even though I practiced all night. To think that I, Harimiya Touji, would lose… 

// Touji faltered to his knees and the Champ crouches to match him. // 

Champ: Well, it can’t be helped. No matter how much you practice a “regular human’s” potential is just that. 

// Right now, Touji has been hurt. Everyone who understood this stiffened and the atmosphere grew cold, with the exception of the Champ. // 

Touji: A regular person…? 

Champ: Hmm? Did I say something wrong? But see if you were a God or a genius you wouldn’t have lost.  

Rintarou: Oi! 

Champ: You’re no longer fit to be in the ring, but you’re still in the stadium. That’s proof that you’re a “regular person”. Then again, a large majority of people are like “that” that’s why it’s called “regular” so don’t worry about it too much~ ☆ 

// The Champ moves to give Touji a pat on the shoulder but Touji evades him. // 

Touji: I’m… I’m… a Harimiya… I’m already at the top… I cannot be like the common folk… 

Rintarou: ( Was my past self, really such a person? Such a-- ) 

Yuni: me. 

Touji: Eh… 

Rintarou: Yuniyuni? 

Yuni: Fight me! 

Champ: Hmm… Wait, are you talking to me? 

Yuni: Is “God” afraid of losing to a “regular person”? 

Champ: Whether I’m fearful or not, it’s just that I don’t lose, see? 

Yuni: Then I will make you remember your loss from 2 years ago. 

Rintarou: ! 

// Those smooth words shocked me so hard, I stopped breathing. Just like that time, when all I could do was be knocked down, it feels like I lost all control of my body. //

Yeah, I get what you mean 🙈 There was a time I was 100% immersed in reading fanfics about their BROTP/frenemy-ship and uff, just all the emotional damage and depth as well as problems and love one can pull out of those two WITHOUT having to go off canon is just...WOW! And ohh, esp. their early years together just give SO MUCH, like, Obi taking in that responsibility regardless of everyone being against it, him being a bit jealous/bitter how Qui-Gon (who nearly didn't take Obi as his Padawan and pretty much had to be begged to) seemed willing to "drop" Obi for Ani, Ani struggling to "not feel", being an outsider, having to catch up, ... Just, uff, SO MUCH UNSAID/UNSHOWN CONTENT!😭😍😭😍😭

What I like about the fics is how they can explore more things from the canon and thing that were ignored and some SW fics nailed shit. Things like, you know, characters having heart to heart conversation or monologues in their heads about how they don't get the behavior of the other xD God bless the fics ;D

I'm not a fan of the chosen one trope. He was interesting because he was chosen one, then he was the bad guy, just to end as the chosen one again. But still, first annoying kid, then annoying teen talking about sand and having super dumb lines and then a pissed off dude killing YOUNGLINGS! So, in a way he broke the trope but in the end he didn't xD But that was Vader. I can't really think about Anakin and Vader as an one xD Plus, well, I kind of felt the time was wasted on him, when we could just watch Obi-Wan staring at walls or something ;)

And dunno, i think I'm rarely fan of the main heroes of the stories, tehy are too predictable, I guess?
