opinions on the ninomiya squad + arashiyama squad dynamics since nino was a4 before dropping to b1

ninomiya squad.... pre-hato, you kind of have a squad that's all Serious People, and the levity pretty much just comes from inukai, but that's a dynamic that they all enjoy. hatohara makes a lot of it work because she's kind of the social buffer of the group the same way yuma is for tamakoma or miura for katori squad. they're all pretty chill with each other. dysfunctional but like simpsons dysfunctional, not actual dysfunctional.

post-hato, they're all desperately trying to pretend that they're normal people who are Dealing With This In A Normal And Well-Adjusted Way. no one like talks to each other so the squad splinters into the ninomiya faction and the inukai-tsuji faction. hiyami is a wild card who mostly sides with nino but can be counted on in a pinch. the fact that they have developed politics does not bode well for them, ngl. ninomiya has no chill about hatohara so they don't talk about her. very much not a fun time.

arashiyama squad is a bunch of the most deeply repressed people in border. out of the whole organization, they probably have the most pressure on them because they have this weird fucked-up ideal to live up to. each of them has an actual press team. kitora and ayatsuji have rules about how many times a week they can be seen in public wearing pants. the boys have theme colours and have to wear them constantly. all of them have forgotten what a "weekend" is. despite this they are each other's moments of respite; the performance continues for families, friends, but not for each other. the squad itself gives its members a sort of breathing room, a place where their lives are not constantly being micromanaged. they give each other little gifts, things that border would never approve of. it's a very "the most valuable parts of us are hidden" kind of squad. like the kind of friendship where you don't know the sort of story stuff, like you don't know that the other person dropped a jar on their foot when they were six or which teacher they had in sixth grade, but you know what sort of person they are beneath the front they put up. like that is the squad dynamic.

i’m pretty sure the ninomiya squad is found family material wherein ninomiya, no. 2 in overall rank and no. 1 shooter in border with one of the highest trion capacity. gathered some of border’s most flawed agents and thinks “yup, this is gonna be my squad”. hi squad literally consists of a boy who’s afraid of women and will probably cower when faced again the female population, a smiley freak who could probably pass as part of the midoyoneizu tandem, and an introverted operator who the authors says to have social phobia. he also had a member who literally cannot shoot a person during combat, something very crucial in battle. and yet ninomiya said yup these 4 kids will do, and actually rose to A-Rank with these bunch and you cannot tell my ninomiya is one of the most interesting characters in this goddamn series.

Day 12 - Favorite Operator

Next up, we have the operators! Now, ngl, this one was a hard decision. I knew for a fact that Hiyami would be one, but the second option was a tossup. Did I like Ren or Kon more? In the end, I chose Tsukimi Ren.

Hiyami is working with probably one of the hardest captains to work with. Ninomiya is one of the most stoic characters in the entire series, so I feel like working with him would be a challenge. And Hiyami is able to work well and get along with not only him, but also the rest of the squad, Tsuji included. Their dynamic just works, and I feel like a part of that has to do with Hiyami. I wish we knew more about her though. Just like how I wish we knew more about most of the supporting characters of the series…

And then we have Ren, who beat out Kon as the second of my two favorite operators. Ngl, it was a really close call, but Ren just had a little more of a lead on Kon. Working with Miwa, Narasaka, Kodera, and Yosuke, four vastly different personalities, she must have a whole lot of patience. Miwa, whose hatred for neighbors is immeasurable, Narasaka, the most serious of the squad, Kodera, whose always ready to learn and quick to question something, and Yosuke, the battle crazy spear guy. If Ren couldn’t handle being operator for that squad, then no one could. That’s the honest truth (imo at least).

Ninomiya Squad Headcanons

-Ninomiya takes his squad out for dinner whenever their birthdays/Christmas comes around, since Azuma used to do that for him.

-Inukai likes planes SO much more than you can imagine. He has an entire sketchbook of detailed WW2 fighter jets and he knows the names of them by heart.

-”Hey Inukai, what’s in that sketchboo–” “GASP”

-Tsuji bakes really well. Once, when he was trying to impress his squad, he baked, frosted, and decorated a three-tier cake for Ninomiya’s birthday. (Nino was so happy)

-Hiyami (their operator) is really insecure about her slick hair. Hatohara used to consult her about it (”No, no, no, Karasuma wouldn’t care about your hair, he’d care about your sweet personality!”), but now that she’s gone, Inukai does that. (”Aw, no, you’re beautiful!”)

-Once some C-Ranker insulted Hiyami about her slick hair and Inukai made them write an apology note and got everyone in Ninomiya Squad (Yes, even you, Nino) to gather up in a group hug.

-Tsuji once tried to talk to Futaba about what the Idaten Trigger’s abilities were, but he ended up getting tongue-tied, flustered, and giving up, instead asking Hiyami. Futaba was very confused when he just left her there in the hallway without saying a single comprehensive word.

-Ninomiya was so terrified of eating Kako’s chocolate-chip mint fried rice that when Kako pushed the fried rice bowl towards him he slapped it out through a window. Ninomiya was pretty sure that a bird that had mistakenly eaten some of the fried rice was having some digestive issues that day.

-Hatohara used to babysit children. The children are now wondering where their favorite babysitter is.

“Haruka-chaaaan.” Usami waltzed into the classroom, presenting the memory stick in her hand with a flourish.

Ayatsuji leaned out of her chair, eyes shining. “Is this…”

Usami stuck her chest out. “Did you doubt my abilities?”

Mikami shook her head furiously. “Never,” she said, tone hushed and reverent.

Usami blushed at that. “Yuri-san helped,” she admitted.

“This programme is such a radical change from how bullet routes are currently calculated,” Hiyami mused. “It could completely revolutionise how trajectories are used in countermeasures against Gunner Triggers.”

‘It could revolutionise everything,” Ayatsuji said.

“Oh, it will,” Usami promised, glasses glinting. “It will.”
