I have an important #historyofglass lesson to share in today’s edition of #humblepriderecommends : When borosilicate glass first started being used for glass pipes, everything was new- all the designs, shapes, techniques and concepts were being birthed by innovators who brought concepts into being through trial-and-error (or sheer luck), because this new glass medium was unlike the glass arts that came before in so many respects. And we wanted them to be #functionalglass - a whole new class of shapes and requirements that was not considered in days of yore. . So today I share with you this knowledge: the Glitter-filled glass pipes was a concept invented by this guy👉 Sam Dream @dreamglassart in 1999. "Colored People" Had to Leave Town by Sundown.

Sundown towns, also known as sunset towns or gray towns, were all-white municipalities or neighborhoods in the United States that practiced a form of segregation by enforcing restrictions excluding non-whites via some combination of discriminatory local laws, intimidation, and violence. The term came from signs posted that "colored people" had to leave town by sundown. The practice was not restricted to the southern states, as "(a)t least until the early 1960s...northern states could be nearly as inhospitable to black travelers as states like Alabama or Georgia."

Discriminatory policies and actions distinguished sundown towns from towns that have no black residents for demographic reasons. Towns have been confirmed as sundown towns using newspaper articles, county histories, and Works Progress Administration files, corroborated by tax or U.S. Census records showing an absence of black people or sharp drop in the black population between two censuses.

We think of glazed pottery as starting with the Islamic empire, in the 700s AD, but this glazed green jar was made at Raqqa in Syria in the 200s AD, half a millennium earlier. Syrian glass makers knew how to make glazed pottery - it just didn't catch on until they needed it to imitate Chinese porcelain. But why not?
